NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Ram 3500. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
ABS module and Hydraulic Control Unit have both failed multiple times. Known issue to RAM with no recall issued. Advised not to drive the truck until the parts are available as the brakes may completely fail unexpectedly, leading to loss of stopping ability/accident.
Abs and traction control lights come on and off at intermittent times while driving, cruise control is lost when these lights come on, this has been an on going problem for about a year now but is a near constant every time I drive now starting about November 2023.
I've been waiting for replacement parts for Technical Service Bulletin S2005000004 for over 8 months. It's my understanding from the dealer I visited that I could have a complete failure of electronics and/or brakes. Many warning lights and warning messages are displayed on the dashboard. Dodge has not issued a recall. I've been towing an 18,000lb RV around the country off and on for a number of years and was never made aware of this danger.
The Hydraulic Control Unit Chrysler part number 68143491AA failed and Ram refuses to replace/repair it and I’ve been waiting a year. This causes the Anti-lock braking system and Traction control system to no longer function limiting function under wet or slippery conditions. This puts the driver and others at risk. It also disables the cruise control and 4 wheel drive. I have contacted my local dealer multiple times and they have made no attempt to help me. The vehicle/component has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others. There were no Warning lamps/messaged before failure only after. These would be ABS lamp and traction control lamp plus a service ABS warning message. "
When I hit a bump my ABS warning light and my traction control light come on on the dash. My cruise control stops working. Had it scanned and there is an error code C0020-01-ABS PUMP MOTOR CONTROL - motor pump (open recirculation test). - internal electronic failure. It comes on and off more often when hitting a bump. This is apparently common and should be a recall.
C0020-01 ABS Pump Motor Control - General Electrical Failure
ABS control module has failed part number 68347098AA this part has been on back order for over a year dealers do not have a firm date on the delivery, This is a safety issue that dealers can not repair.
ABS braking system repeat failures of the same part. 68143491AA is the parts number. There is an updated part number 68143491AB that is not available.
On 32600miles abs and traction control start glitching. Happened to me on the highway pulling a rv and using cruise control, all of the sudden I lost cruise control on 70 mph and ABS with traction lights came on and off several times and end up go away, I stopped in the safe area and check all related parts on the vehicle that related brakes and abs, fluid was up to level all parts, brakes, wiring was good where I was able to see. After I continued to drive, abs did same thing several times, end up abs and traction lights came on and stayed for a while and all of the sudden for no reason came off for several miles. Sims like bad connection or abs module failure.

This is the third time our 2017 Ram 3500 is showing "Service Electronic Braking system" ABS and STC inoperable. The dealer said it is the same issue as the last 2 times and the parts, ABS controller and hydraulic modules will not be available until February 2024 at the earliest. Major safety issue that needs to be addressed now.

Service Electronic Braking System and Service Anit-Lock Braking System alarm lights. Code C0020-01 ABS Pump Motor Control- General Electric Failure. This issue is related to Anti-Lock braking that can cause injury to my safety and family safety. Problem is very well know and fully reproducible at dealers. Vehicle has been at dealer for long term waiting for dealer to find/repair issue .Dealer is at loss for repair. Dealer repair for this was change HCU and ABS Module. This repair has shown to not work in many scenarios and multiple repair and replace of the same units are not fixing the issues.

My rear window leaks around the seal needs to be fixed
ABS AND ELECTRONIC BRAKE CONTROLL SYSETEM LIGHTS FLASH ON AND OFF WHILE DRIVING
ABS and traction control. Is available for inspection. Loss of these functions increases the risk for loss of control. Has been inspected by the dealer. Parts to fix are in high demand and are not available until March of 2024. Warning lamps ABS and the traction control laps are on. First appeared in August 2023.
I am the second owner of this vehicle. Shortly after purchase (mileage 26,401) the Hydraulic Control Unit (Control for Anti-lock braking system) failed. Dodge dealer installed OEM replacement in March 2022. The same component (Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU)) failed again July 2023. Dodge dealer scheduled service/replacement for August 3, 2023. Upon delivery of vehicle for service I am told Chrysler has blocked dealers from ordering any HCU nor are they to use any current inventory on hand. Chrysler has initiated an "engineering investigation" into these parts and is seeking another manufacturer to supply going forward. Chrysler estimates a part may become available by February 2024. Vehicle is used for towing and has no anti-lock braking system in the mean time. I believe this could pose a safety issue.
The traction control and ABS warning lights come on and go off intermittently without cause. When the lights are on, anti lock braking and cruise control are non functional. The ABS portion of this issue is an extreme safety hazard. This is a known common issue of this year vehicle
My ABS control module was replaced 2 years ago by David Stanley Dodge in midwest city oklahoma. It is failing again and i have discovered a lot 2017 & 2018 ram 2500/3500 trucks are having the same issue. Last time it cost $800 to fix. I now have to take it back in again to have it fixed again. This is unacceptable. Ram should be recalling this issue on these trucks.
Antilock brake and traction control stop working randomly. Alarms pop up on Dash board. Seems to happen more when it is humid out. With these safety devices not working the truck is not safe to drive and since the problem is random dealer can not find the cause.
Have constant issue with ABS system with skid control. Light on and off when you first start for several miles then every few miles. Had it serviced and still issue
ABS System, Traction Control and Cruise Control. Issues with ABS system taking out the cruise control and cause vehicle speed to decrease with out control increasing risk of a rear end collision. The manufacturer is very aware of the problem and the control unit is on back order for about 9 months. This is an intermittent problem that some times does not occur during the course of a day and sometimes it will flash 100 times a day.
Truck spun out with my baby in the back seat due to not have abs or traction control due to a abs and hcu failure.
The contact owns a 2017 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was pulling to the left side. The ABS warning light was illuminated, causing the cruise control to be inoperable. Additionally, the front driver's and passenger's side tire treads were worn out quickly since having the recall repair performed under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V021000 (Steering). The contact stated that the vehicle was unable to have an alignment performed due to the nut being welded per the recall remedy. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that an alignment needed to be performed, but declined to replace the drag link assembly. The dealer confirmed that the vehicle had previously been repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V021000 (Steering); however, the contact stated that the dealer only welded the nut to the adjuster sleeve but did not replace the drag link assembly per the remedy. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 24,000.
Abs lights keep going off.
Abs Failure, at around 80,000 miles, Truck is unusable , brake drags and causes overheating, can not get to dealer unless towed. All ABS system lights and failure warning lights are on Have been paying on vehicle which has been unusable since 6/2022 Dealer says parts are not available
Driving on gravel road and each bump will cause the ABS service light to come on and disable my ABS and ASC to stop working. also on hwy with small bump ABS service light comes on disabling my ABS, ASC, and cruise control. Dealer says part is on back order for the next 9 Months so i must drive my truck without theses Safety systems until the part comes in. Dealer says it is the ABS pump and that it is a know issue and that is why i must wait for 9 months because so many trucks are failing.
Vehicle alarms indicating loss of anti-lock and traction control systems. Failure results in loss of both anti-lock braking and traction control safety functions Have twice had the ABS control module and Hydraulic Control unit replaced by Ram dealer. Failure returned for third time in July 2023, and have been waiting on same replacement parts since (manufacturer backorder). Vehicle has approximately 83k miles, and this issue has been ongoing since 2019.
Problem is ABS and traction control light randomly come up with warnings to service systems.
ABS control module has been back order since June 2023. Abs light flashes and bing on regular bases. Cruise will not work when the ABS light is on. I’ve been on a wait list since June 2023, truck is very annoying trying to drive with constant binging. Towing my 5th wheel is very concerning with on going ABS module problems.
The ABS and Electronic breaking lights keep go on and off each time it does it it turns off the cruise control

The contact owns a 2017 Ram 3500. The contact stated that while in reverse(R), the rear-view camera image was blue. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the rear-view camera or the wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was contacted and informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V398000 (Back Over Prevention). The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
For the second time we are getting the intermittent "Service Electronic Braking System" warning on our 2017 Ram 3500HD. The first on 4/21/2020 @ 15293 miles resulted in replacement of the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit and Controller Module under warranty. Now the same issue is occurring again @ 26500 miles and of course out of warranty . When this happens both the Anti Lock Brakes and Stability Traction Control functions are not operative per the warning lamps. This can be a significant safety concern. Twice in 10,000 miles should trigger a concern and maybe a redesign-recall..
The grid heater in my engine overheated causing a bolt to lose integrity and snap off being sucked into the # 6 cylinder causing catastrophic damage to the motor while I was towing a trailer up hill. Losing all power on a hill with a trailer seems like a pretty dangerous situation to me. It’s a known issue dating back too 2014 and still hasn’t been fixed my 2017 suffered from the issue and now I’m 2021-2023 models there catching fire and being recalled but my 2017 is not. There’s only 48,000 miles on my truck it’s not old at all and should be in the same recall as the newer models.
ABS or EBS warning light. Dealer unable to resolve.
This issue is related to 2017 Ram 3500 truck with 6.7L Turbo Diesel motor: The warning lights for the ABS and the Cruise Control intermittently activate and there is an audible alarm ding noise along with them. This ABS warning light going off intermittently indicates that if a situation arises that requires the ABS system, it may not activate as designed. Which in turn could contribute to loss of control or accident with the vehicle. This problem has been confirmed by Villa Rica Auto in Villa Rica, GA. This vehicle has been inspected by Villa Rica Auto. They advised that the problem is with a defective HCU and that part is on back order with no ETA available. This problem first appeared a few days after buying the truck from Gravity Autos Atlanta. This truck was not involved in a crash.
WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT FOR SERVICE ABS / TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY. WE USE THIS VRHICLE TO PULL A 5TH WHEEL TRAILER AND WE ARE CONCERNED ABOUT BRAKE FAILURE.
While operating my truck the ABS warning light will activate and and deactivate intermittently. Yes, my vehicle can by inspected upon request. While braking the ABS will not engage causing emergency braking to be much more difficult and dangerous. The ABS failure has been confirmed by my mechanic. My vehicle has not been inspected by the manufacturer, police or insurance reps. The problem was initially hidden by the dealership that sold me the truck. I don't know how they managed to do it, but the issue was not disclosed by them.
My Ram 3500 DRW has about 45000 miles and it now requires the replacement of the hydraulic control unit (HCU) and the anti-lock braking system (ABS) module. I discovered this issue prior to the warning light flashing and sounding when I had to do sudden braking in order to avoid an obstacle in the road encountered during a storm last week. I just barely got my Ram to stop and not swerve off into the ditch as the pumping of the brakes did not stop the truck. The truck just slid as if it did not have ABS capability. I was told by the Ram dealership in Spartanburg SC that these two repair parts are not available due to increased demand due to what the technician said was a "known issue" for the last couple of years. You cannot even order these parts today as the Ram parts system doesn't even allow you to add the parts to your shopping cart. To add insult to injury, the service manager told me that these two repair parts needed to repair my truck will not be available until August 2023! This is my work truck and I do not have another vehicle to use as I wait for these parts to be available. I can continue to drive the truck but will do so at my and my family's risk all the while with the ABS warning message flashing and warning chime sound constantly dinging. Not to mention not having emergency braking capability when it is needed the most.
The reason for this report is to let you know that my anti lock brake system has been malfunctioning for at least 10k miles. This is the same symptoms that you can read about on the internet. Flashing warning lights on the dash board and loss of cruise control. The warning alarm for the most part now is alerting continuously. When it first started the Chrysler dealer said that it was no longer in warranty. The truck is still like new and has 55k miles. I would like to see Chrysler do what is RIGHT and correct this widespread safety issue!! [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
Random occurrences of an audible bell along with error messages stating, "Service Electronic Braking System" and "Service Antilock Brake System" flash momentarily on the dash. They may also stay on for prolonged periods of time. Cruise control is inoperable when the error messages flash, or stay on. The ABS trouble indicator light is also on during these events. The abrupt cancellation of cruise control in traffic is dangerous, especially when towing a trailer. The problem started (for me) just after purchasing the vehicle, used, with 27,428 miles on March 9, 2023. I suspect the pervious owner traded this vehicle on another vehicle because of this problem. I tried to get out of the purchase of this truck because of this problem. Dealer would not allow that without much expense on my end. So, I'm stuck with the problem. It has the potential to be very dangerous. Luckily, I had purchased an extended warranty but the dealer said I needed to wait a month or so before I took the vehicle to a Ram service center so the warranty would be fully established. I purchased the vehicle for pulling purposes and I do that regularly. In the similar cases I have read about, the owners say that the dealers are not helpful and the vehicle has to be kept for long periods of time for evaluation. I have not had time to get it properly diagnosed yet but the problem is exactly like the many others cases I have read about.
Abs failed 2nd time less than 10000 miles after first failure. First failure just before 36000 miles repaired under warranty. 2nd failure just before 46000 miles. No parts available est for repair $1000 to $2000 dollars. Truck now has 52869 on odometer. Failure affects cruise control, and maybe trailer brakes and traction control
I have had my ram 3500 for 6000 miles and first time had a issue with the abs and traction control light flashing and disabling abs and traction control took to dealer they replaced the abs module and reprogrammed test drove with no issues not even 3000 miles later the issue starts again I take it back to the dealer and they state that it is a known issue with the module and hcu needs to be replaced quoted over 1000 dollars and said the parts are not able to be ordered till August of 2023
ABS brake warning lights are on and cruise control will not work. I was told by the dealer the module had to be replaced. This truck only has 34691 miles on it now and this problem started over a year ago. Dealer said this part was not available because of supply chain issues. I have several friends with the same 2017 or 18 truck and are having the same issue. Obviously this is a defective part and is a significant safety concern being the brake system on a heavy truck
ABS unit is malfunctioning for the third time on the truck. The dealer has already replacement it twice but it keeps beeping for notification and flashing the ABS indicator. The Hydraulic Control Unit doesn't work, because of this I can't use Cruise Control or the 4x4 component of the truck. The Traction Control System light is on making it difficult to break properly in wet surfaces. There are thousands of people waiting for the replacement of the ABS unit, due to the 2017 and 2018 models having this issue.
I have the ABS light and traction control light coming on intermittently and the warning "Service ABS system" and "Service Electronic Braking System. Code is C0020-01 - ABS Pump Motor Control-General Electrical Failure. ABS module and HCU are replaced under warranty once.
