I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE GETTING ON THE RAMP AND THE PRW STR LIGHT CAME ON THE DASH. MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED IMMEDIATELY AND I COULD NOT TURN. I MANAGED TO MAKE IT TO MY DESTINATION BUT WAS ALMOST HIT DUE TO THE FACT THAT I COULD NOT TURN. IT WOULD RESET WHEN THE CAR WAS TURNED OFF THEN THE LIGHT WOULD GO OFF AGAIN AND THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD TIGHTEN UP ON ME. IT HAS HAPPENED UP TO 20 TIMES A DAY. I HAVE ALMOST HAD THREE ACCIDENTS BECAUSE OF THE LOSS OF POWER STEERING. I HAD TO HAVE THE MOTORS REPLACED AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE COST OF OVER $ 800. THREE HOURS AFTER I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP THE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP. I HAD TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND ANOTHER PART HAD TO BE REPLACE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAN NEEDS TO BE INCLUDED WITH THE CURRENT RECALL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. THE KEYS BECAME WEDGED IN THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THE CONTACT COULD NOT SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. THE BATTERY WAS DISCONNECTED IN ORDER TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER COULD NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 41,297 AND THE CURRENT WAS UNKNOWN.
INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6) WE HAVE OWNED A 2007 SATURN ION 4 DOOR FOR ABOUT 2 1/2 YEARS. WE BOUGHT IT NEW. THE CAR HAS ABOUT 54,000 MILES ON IT NOW. IN THE MID 40,000 MILE RANGE, WHENEVER WE WOULD MAKE MANY TURNS (WE LIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS--FEW STRAIGHTAWAYS), THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING STARTED GOING OUT. THE CAR CAN STILL BE STEERED, BUT WITH DIFFICULTY. THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY GRADUALLY GETTING WORSE. UPON TURNING THE IGNITION OFF AND RESTARTING, THE POWER STEERING WORKS AGAIN, ALTHOUGH A FEW TURNS MORE, THE STEERING WILL GO OUT YET AGAIN UNTIL THE MOTOR (OR WHATEVER??) COOLS OFF. RECENTLY, THERE WAS A MASSIVE RECALL RE THIS PROBLEM WITH CHEVY COBALTS AND OTHER NEAR SATURNS. I UNDERSTAND THE SATURN ION IS BASICALLY THE SAME AND USED THE SAME STEERING MECHANISM THAT HAS FAILED WITH THE COBALTS AND CLONES. WITH THE ABOVE, IT WOULD SEEM REASONABLE TO INCLUDE THE IONS IN THE RECALL. THIS IS NOT AN UNCOMMON PROBLEM WITH THE IONS AS INTERNET TRAFFIC CONFIRMS. PLEASE INCLUDE THE IONS WITH THIS RECALL. THE PARTS INVOLVED ARE THE SAME AND THE CHANCES OF ACCIDENTS, OR WORSE, NO DIFFERENT. ON MARCH 10, 2010, THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2007 SATURN ION TURNED OFF. I HAD TO TURN OFF THE CAR AND RESTART IT. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 SATURN ION WHEN THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THERE WAS NO WARNING - THE INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON AND THE POWER STEERING WAS GONE. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO MANEUVER THE CAR OFF THE HIGHWAY, WHERE I PUT IN PARK, TURNED IT OFF AND WAITED A FEW MINUTES BEFORE TURNING IT BACK ON. REMARKABLY, AS QUICKLY AS THE PROBLEM APPEARED, IT WENT AWAY AND I WAS ABLE TO GET BACK ON THE HIGHWAY WITH NOT FURTHER PROBLEMS BUT WHEN I STARTED RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE I FOUND MANY OTHER COMPLAINS OF THE SAME EXACT NATURE. SATURN OF COURSE WILL REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN FOR ABOUT $900. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS RELATED TO THIS SAME PROBLEM. THIS IS UNSAFE AND SCARY AS HELL. ON TUESDAY, MARCH 9, 2010, THE POWER STEERING ON MY 2007 SATURN TURNED ITSELF OFF FOUR TIMES WHILE I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK. I HAD TO STOP AND RESTART MY CAR EACH TIME. *TR
POWER STEERING SHUTS OFF AT RANDOM TIMES. IT IS ELECTRIC POWER STEERING AND A WARNING IS DISPLAYED ON THE DASH. IF, I SIMPLY TURN THE CAR OFF AND THEN BACK ON THE POWER STEERING WORKS FINE AGAIN. IT CAN HAPPEN AGAIN AFTER A FEW MINUTES, OR NOT FOR A WEEK. THERE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE ANY COMMON CONDITION THAT CAUSES THIS, IT IS TOTALLY RANDOM. *TR UPDATED IVOQ. 07/29/10
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT A SPEED OF 45 MPH THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY STOPPED FUNCTIONING. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE FAILURE CORRECTED ITSELF AND THE POWER STEERING WAS PERFORMING NORMALLY. THE FAILURE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 69800.

2007 SATURN ION HAS A REALLY BIG PROBLEM. POWER STEERING GOES OFF 3-5 TIMES A DAY. CAR DASHBOARD RINGS 3 TIMES AND POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON AND CARS POWER STEERING SHUTS OFF. CAR HAS 35000 MILES. CALLED SATURN AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG NOW WITH CAR SO I WOULD TO REPAIR THE CAR AND IF ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAINED THEN THEY WOULD INVESTIGATE AND MAKE A DECISION OR I COULD DRIVE THE CAR AND WHEN IT SHUTS OFF PULL OVER AND RESTART THE CAR. THIS IS 2010 NOT 1920 AND I DO NOT ACCEPT SHUT A RESPONSE FOR A REAL SAFETY CONCERN. *TR
MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HER 2007 SATURN ION COUPE ACROSS THE BEN FRANKLIN BRIDGE IN PHILADELPHIA, PA AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE DASHBOARD LIGHT CAME ON AND THE STEERING CUT OUT 5 TIMES. IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER THE CAR AND THE STEERING WOULD TEMPORARILY GO TO POWER AND THEN BACK TO MANUAL. THERE IS NO PLACE TO PULL OVER. SHE STAYED CALM AND WAS ABLE TO GET TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER AND AVOIDED AN ACCIDENT. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR A POWER STEERING ASSIST REPLACEMENT TODAY. THE COST WAS $500. I CHECKED ON THE INTERNET AND APPARENTLY THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM SINCE 2004. WE BOUGHT THIS CAR BECAUSE IT HAD A HIGH SAFETY RATING AND ONSTAR DIAGNOSTICS. WE CONTACTED ONSTAR TO CHECK TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH THE STEERING. ONSTAR APPARENTLY DOES NOT HAVE ACCESS TO STEERING FAILURE..AT LEAST I WOULD KNOW THAT SHE GOT HURT WHEN IT FAILS AGAIN. MY QUESTION TO YOU IS WHY HAS THIS PROBLEM BEEN ALLOWED TO GO ON FOR 6 YEARS. I SAW NO WARNING ABOUT THIS WHEN WE RESEARCHED THE CAR. WHEN I MADE A SPECIFIC INQUIRY ONLINE, THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR INCIDENTS ARE REPORTED. I HAVE A 2007 SATURN ION AND READ THIS MORNING THAT YOU ARE ISSUING A RECALL FOR THE CHEVY COBALT AND PONTIAC PURSUIT/G5. WHAT CONCERNS ME IS THAT YOU ARE NOT RECALLING THE ION BECAUSE OF A LACK OF REPORTED ISSUES. I HAVE RALLIED ION OWNERS FROM OUR MAIN SATURN ION CLUB SITES LISTED BELOW, WHAT CAN ALSO BE FOUND ON THESE SITES IS THE LARGE NUMBER OF FAILURES OF THE POWER STEERING ON THESE CARS, WHICH IS THE SAME PART NUMBER THAT HAS BEEN DEEMED DEFECTIVE ON THE COBALT/G5/PURSUIT. THE COBALT/G5/PURSUIT WAS BASED OFF AND ENGINEERED FROM THE SATURN ION AND SHARES THE ENTIRE DRIVETRAIN, STEERING SYSTEM AND WHEEL/TIRE SIZES WITH ONLY VERY MINOR DIFFERENCES IF ANY IN WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION AND PARTS. THIS IS SO MUCH SO, COBALT SUSPENSION PARTS ARE OFTEN PUT ON IONS. PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE THE IONS IN THIS RECALL, OUR CARS HAVE BEEN IGNORED BY GM IN MANY OTHER CASES SUCH AS THE CVT TRANSMISSION, LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS, AND IGNITION SWITCH FAILURES. HAVE SEEN ONLINE OTHER CUSTOMERS WITH SAME PROBLEM AND CONSIDERING CAR ONLY 3YRS OLD AND ONLY 47,000 MILES AND THAT IT GOES AWAY WHEN CAR TURNED OFF AND BACK ON THAT IT MIGHT BE SOME KIND OF COMPUTER ERROR OR SOMETHING. EVERY DIFFICULT TO STEER WHEN IT DOES GO OFF AND DEALERSHIP WANTS $125 FOR DIAGNOSTIC & UP TO $600 TO CORRECT ERROR. *TR

IN ADDITION, HE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING WOULD FAIL WHEN COMPLETING A TURN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED BY A DEALER OR AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,000. *TR
THE POWER CUTS OFF WHEN HITTING A BUMP/JARRING AND CAR LOSES ALL AUTOMATIC FEATURES--POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES. ESPECIALLY LIKELY WITH HEAVY KEY CHAIN. HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN 2009, BUT MORE IN PAST TWO YEARS. OCCURS WHEN PULLING INTO DRIVEWAYS OF STORES, HITTING POTHOLE, ETC. THE FOLLOWING EVENT OCCURRED ON MONDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 2010 AT APPROXIMATELY 5:45 P.M. WHILE I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 SATURN ION. I DROVE TO THE SERVICE STATION FOR GAS. WHEN I TRIED TO TURN OFF MY CAR, THE KEY WOULD NOT BUDGE. THE IGNITION WAS LOCKED. I CALLED THE SATURN DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS CLOSED, BUT I WAS TOLD TO DRIVE MY CAR THERE AND SOMEONE WOULD DISABLE MY CAR. THE BATTERY CABLES HAD TO BE DISCONNECTED TO TURN OFF THE CAR. IN ORDER TO REPAIR MY CAR, THE WHOLE IGNITION HAD TO BE REPLACED. AFTER A BRIEF INTERNET SEARCH, I DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT; IT HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHER SATURN ION OWNERS. *TR
2007 SATURN ION, PWR STR LIGHTS COMES ON, STEERING WHEEL FREEZES. CONSEQUENCES = TRYING TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF A MOVING VEHICLE WITH LIMITED STEERING. YOU WOULD HAVE TO PULL OVER AND TURN THE AUTOMOBILE OFF AND THEN BACK ON FOR THE LIGHT TO GO OFF AND STEERING WORKS FINE, HOWEVER IT HAPPENS AGAIN 5 MINUTES LATER. I CONTACTED SATURN HOWEVER THEY ARE AWARE BUT HAVE NOT HAD ENOUGH COMPLAINTS FROM NHTSA YET TO PUT IT ON THEIR RECALL LIST. *TR
1 - 2 WEEKS AGO MY STEERING GOT VERY STIFF AND ALMOST CAUSED ME TO UNDER COMPENSATE IN A TURN AT AN INTERSECTION. MY WARNING SIGNAL AND MESSAGE INDICATED A POWER STEERING PROBLEM. 2 - THE PROBLEM CORRECTS ITSELF WHEN I TURN THE ENGINE OFF BUT REAPPEARS SHORTLY AFTER WE TURN THE ENGINE BACK ON. 3 - THIS VEHICLE IS A 2007 GM SATURN ION. I CONTACTED THE GM DEALERSHIP WHO IS HANDLING THE SATURNS IN BATON ROUGE ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT HAVE NOT BROUGHT IT IN YET. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE IS A RECALL ISSUED TODAY (3/2/10) -- HTTP://NEWS.YAHOO.COM/S/AP/20100302/AP_ON_BI_GE/US_GM_RECALL -- BY GM ON CERTAIN COMPACTS BUT IT DOESN'T INCLUDE THE 2007 SATURN ION. ANY HELP ON THIS MATTER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE VEHICLE BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE ONTO THE EMERGENCY LANE AND SHUT THE VEHICLE OFF. UPON RESTARTING THE VEHICLE IT BEGAN TO FUNCTION NORMALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THIS WAS A KNOWN FAILURE AND HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE FAILURE BECAME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE OVER TIME. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE AIR CONDITIONING UNIT STOPPED BLOWING COLD AIR AND THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE STOPPED FUNCTIONING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED FOR THE CAUSE OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR INTERMITTENTLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 62,689.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED, THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VERY HARD TO TURN AND IT BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. A LOCAL MECHANIC STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LOW. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING MOTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. 2007 SATURN ION, POWER STEERING HAS GONE OUT THREE TIMES, RESTART CAR, PROBLEM GOES AWAY. THEN COMES BACK AGAIN. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHAKE WHEN THE POWER STEERING FAILED; HOWEVER, WHEN THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED THE STEERING WHEEL DOES NOT SHAKE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, BUT DIDN'T OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE REPAIR. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 78,000.
OUR 2007 SATURN ION WITH 12,000 MILES LOST STEERING CONTROL DUE TO SHORT CIRCUIT IN STEERING ASSIST MOTOR. THE LOSS OF THE POWER ASSIST WHILE IN THE MOUNTAINS RESULTED 90% STEERING LOSS AND ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF VEHICLE. LAST YEAR IN A SIMILAR AUTO OWNED BY OUR FAMILY THE 2006 CHEVY COBALT LOST POWER STEERING ASSIST BUT SHORTED OUT WHILE THE CAR WAS ON BUT PARKED. I AM SURPRISED NO SAFETY RECALLS HAVE BEEN ISSUED. *TR

THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. WHEN THE ENGINE RESTARTED THE VEHICLE OPERATED NORMALLY. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY AT ANY GIVEN SPEED RATE. THE AUTHORIZED DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE MALFUNCTION. THE REPAIR COST FOR A POWER STEERING MOTOR WAS $700. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,000.
I HAVE HAD 4 TIRE FAILURES ON MY 1997 SATURN ION. ALL TIRES WERE GOODYEAR ASSURANCE 195/60/R15 TIRES. IN ONES INSTANCE, A TREAD SEPARATION OCCURRED. IN TWO INSTANCES, BUBBLES DEVELOPED ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL OF A FRONT TIRE. THE FOURTH INSTANCE ALSO HAD SIDEWALL DAMAGE, BUT WHETHER THERE WAS A BUBBLE FIRST IS NOT KNOW. THIS HAPPENED ON 1/22/2010, 11/5/2008. 1/26/2009 AND 7/16/2009, AT 26,000, 29,000, 34,000 AND 40,000 MILES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 SATURN ION. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH, THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE POWER STEERING ASSIST THEN FAILED AND THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROADWAY. WHEN RESTARTING THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING ASSIST RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE UNKNOWN REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE FAILURE DID NOT RECUR. IN ADDITION, THE IGNITION ALSO FAILED AND IN ORDER TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, THE BATTERY AND A FUSE HAD TO BE DISCONNECTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSIS OF THE IGNITION FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 76,000.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE POWER STEERING WOULD WORK AS DESIGNED; HOWEVER ONCE THE ENGINE WAS WARM, THE POWER STEERING WOULD SPORADICALLY FAIL. 2007 SATURN ION HAS A POWER STEERING PROBLEM WHICH CAUSE THE STEERING TO LOCK AND HARD TO STEER IT CAN NOT BE REPAIRED BY PUTTING IN POWER STEERING FLUID, IT DOESN'T WORK THE ELECTRICAL LIGHT APPEARS ON THE DASH. THIS OCCURS AFTER ONLY 33,000 MILES, AND THE ONLY WAY TO CORRECT IT IS TO PUT A NEW MOTOR MODULE AND SWITCH WITH A REPAIR COST OF $997.00. AFTER SURFING THE INTERNET, WE ARE ONE OF MANY WHO ARE EXPERIENCES THIS PROBLEM. I ASK IF A DEATH HAS TO OCCUR IN ORDER FOR THIS TO BECOME A RECALL VEHICLE. INCIDENTALLY, MY 17 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WAS UNDER THE WHEEL WHEN THIS HAPPEN TO OUR CAR. PLEASE DO NOT LET A DEATH HAPPEN TO HAVE A RECALL. I WANT TO REPORT A PROBLEM WITH MY 2007 SATURN ION. I LIVE IN VIRGINIA AND MY VEHICLE HAD A FUEL SYSTEM LEAK LIKE THE ONE DESCRIBED IN YOUR SAFETY RECALL 09V419000. MY VEHICLE WAS ACTUALLY DRIPPING FUEL FROM THE SKID PLATE COVERING THE FUEL TANK. GM WAS MADE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM BACK IN DECEMBER 2009, BUT BECAUSE MY VEHICLE WAS ABOUT 7000 MILES OUT OF THE FACTORY WARRANTY SATURN/GM REFUSED TO HELP. I COMPARED THE ORIGINAL FUEL PUMP AND THE NEW ONE PURCHASED FROM GM AND FIND THAT THEY HAVE BEEN REDESIGNED INDICATING THAT GM KNOWS THAT THE OEM FUEL PUMP IS DEFECTIVE. I WAS SURPRISED THAT GM REFUSED TO HELP SINCE THIS CAR HAD BEEN TO THE DEALER ON 2 OTHER OCCASIONS FROM MARCH TO MAY 2009 WITH FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEMS. I ALSO WANT TO MAKE YOU AWARE THAT DURING THE TIME I WAS HAVING THIS PROBLEM MY DAUGHTER WAS CONSTANTLY COMPLAINING OF HEADACHES. EVER SINCE I HAD THE FUEL PUMP REPLACED SHE HAS NOT HAD ANY HEADACHES AFTER RIDING IN THE VEHICLE. I FEEL ALL 2006-2007 SATURN IONS AND CHEVROLET COBALTS ARE SAFETY HAZARDS. POWER STEERING JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN GOES OUT ON MY SATURN VEHICLE WHILE IN OPERATION. A CHIME SOUNDS INDICATING SOMETHINGS WRONG AND THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR COMES ON THE DASH BOARD. YOU LOOSE ALL POWER STEERING FUNCTION AND ITS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE TO MANEUVER AT ALL, AT HIGH SPEEDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING IT CAN BE DEADLY AS YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE WHEEL AND ALMOST BREAK YOUR ARM TRYING AND CAN EITHER HIT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. WHEN YOU READ OVER THE USER MANUAL IT TELLS YOU THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDS TO BE SERVICED AND REFERS YOU TO A SATURN LOCATION TO HAVE THE REPAIR COMPLETED. MY 2007 SATURN ION IS EXPERIENCING THIS DEFECT WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP THE MECHANIC EXPLAINED THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE (THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM RANDOMLY SHORTS AND CAUSES DRIVING HAZARDS) THEY SAID IT HAS NOT BEEN RECALLED YET BUT IT IS SEEN QUITE OFTEN FOR ALL GM VEHICLES WITH THAT SYSTEM AND THAT IT IS ALWAYS 1 OF 2 THINGS THE EPS(ELECTRONIC POWER ASSISTED STEERING) OR THE STEERING COLUMN. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE FAILURE OCCURRED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENTIRE STEERING SHAFT. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WOULD INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN FOR DIAGNOSIS WHILE THE WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE WARNING LIGHT WOULD ONLY ILLUMINATE INTERMITTENTLY AND THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO PRODUCE DIAGNOSTIC CODES WITHOUT IT ILLUMINATED. NO ADDITIONAL REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE. I BOUGHT MY CAR A YEAR AGO-BRAND NEW. TWO DAYS AGO I PULLED UP TO WORK AND WENT TO TURN MY CAR OFF. THE KEY WOULD NOT COMPLETELY TURN ALL THE WAY AND WAS STUCK IN THE IGNITION. THE WHEEL WAS NOT LOCKED, SO THIS WAS NOT THE CAUSE. IT HAS BEEN THREE DAYS NOW AND IT CONTINUES TO OCCUR. IT IS ON AND OFF, BUT THE FACT REMAINS THAT THERE IS A CLEAR ISSUE. I EVEN WENT ONLINE TO SEE IF THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM. APPARENTLY SO. I FOUND NUMEROUS FORUMS AND COMPLAINTS FROM OTHERS WHO HAVE PURCHASED THE SAME MODEL CAR AND HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE. THEY ALSO STATED THAT WHEN CONTACTING THE DEALER, THEY ALREADY KNEW AND WERE FAMILIAR WITH THE EXACT ISSUE. IN LATE OCTOBER 2009, THERE WAS A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE WHILE DRIVING MY CAR. I TOOK MY CAR TO MY LOCAL SATURN DEALERSHIP, WHERE I HAD PURCHASED MY CAR. THE SERVICE MANAGER ADVISED ME THAT I MUST HAVE GONE OVER A SPEED BUMP TOO FAST BECAUSE THE FUEL PUMP HAD BEEN PUSHED INTO HE BOTTOM OF MY CAR CAUSING THE FUEL PUMP TO CRACK AND LEAK. I HAD NO RECOLLECTION OF THAT KIND OF IMPACT AND THERE WAS NO EXTERIOR DAMAGE TO MY CAR. I WAS VERY SKEPTICAL OF THE SERVICE MANAGER'S EXPLANATION, SO I TOOK MY CAR TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND I WAS ADVISED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS ACTUALLY DEFECTIVE. I HAVE TRIED TO WORK WITH SATURN ON A RESOLUTION, HOWEVER TO SAY THAT THE LOCAL AND DISTRICT OFFICE HAVE BEEN UNHELPFUL, WOULD BE PUTTING IT MILDLY.*TR

IF I HAD A COLLISION CAR WOULD HAVE EXPLODED DUE TO AMOUNT OF FUEL LEAKING. NEW FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED COST TO 400.00 PLUS LABOR COSTS. JUST BOUGHT USED VEHICLE IN AUGUST 2009 FROM DEALER. *TR
