The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light, another vehicle crashed into the rear, pushing it with the impact into an intersection due to the other vehicle still accelerating while rear-ending her vehicle. The contact stated that the other vehicle had lifted the rear end of her vehicle and had almost driven under her. The contact stated that the other vehicle then backed up and went around her vehicle, and left the scene. The contact mentioned that the driver of the other vehicle was intoxicated. The contact stated that she called the police, and she was advised to drive the vehicle off the roadway. The contact stated that she was able to drive the vehicle to a nearby parking lot. The contact stated that her vehicle's rear bumper had dents and cracks, and the rear lift gate was damaged. The contact stated that a lower section of the rear bumper had fallen off. The contact stated that the air bag warning was illuminated but the air bags had not deployed. The contact stated that the police arrived and filed a report. The contact stated that the EMTs were on scene and had taken her blood pressure and also checked her passenger for any injuries. The contact was asked if she or her passenger wanted to be transported to the hospital. They both declined, and the contact was able to drive the vehicle to her destination. The contact stated that the following day she had a scheduled medical appointment and told the doctor that her neck was stiff and she had a headache. The contact stated that the passenger had also gone for medical attention and was complaining of neck stiffness and headaches. The contact stated that she had not yet taken the vehicle to be repaired or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 469,929.
No accidents yet related to this issue, several close calls.
When braking, the accelerator had somehow stuck and moved me ahead instead of stopping and caused an accident; running into concrete posts in the parking lot, which by USAA standards, totaled my car; Actually it didn't, but because they didn't want to repair it the settlement totaled it, causing me lots of issues in finding transportation. This was not the first time. It has happened three times with this car. I never went back to the dealer (too far to find out if there was a fix for it, or a recall.) In searching for one, never found it.

AN UNKNOWN DEALER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. *TT CONSUMER STATED THIS MFG DEFAULT IS COMMON ON THIS VEHICLE. HANDLE PART SNAPS OFF FROM THE DOOR WHICH RESULTS IN THE BACK DOOR BEING UNABLE TO OPEN. PAID $150 TO REPLACE THE HANDLE. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FUSE BOX UNDERNEATH THE STEERING WHEEL WAS MALFUNCTIONING AND THE WIRE WAS HOT, WHICH CREATED A POSSIBLE FIRE HAZARD. THE FAILURE ALSO CAUSED THE LIGHT SWITCH, MIRROR SWITCH, TRACTION CONTROL SWITCH, AIR BAGS, AND DOOR LOCKS NOT TO WORK AFTER THE FAILURE. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 174,000.
TAKATA RECALL: VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY. BACK TRUNK FAILED TO OPEN. TRUNK DOOR SWITCH RELEASE BUTTON COVER W/ SCREWS ARE HANGING ALONG WITH WIRE. BUTTON IS STUCK.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SCION XB. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THAT THE 02 SENSOR WAS FAULTY AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. TWO WEEKS AFTER THE REPAIR, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND ALL THE WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED SIMULTANEOUSLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 165,782.
WHILE BRAKING CAR STARTED TO SLID AND SUDDENLY ACCRETED WHAT SEEMED LIKE FULL THROTTLE. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR IN PARK WHILE ENGINE WAS REVVING AND TIRED CONTINUED TO SPIN. I HAD TO TURN SWITCH OFF TO STOP CAR FROM LUNGING FORWARD AND TIRES SPINNING. ALL OF THIS HAPPENED ON A CITY STREET AND I TRIED TO TURN LEFT TO GET CAR OFF OF MAIN ROAD.
TAKATA RECALL: THE WINDSHIELD OFTER GETS HIT WITH ROCKS/PEBBLES AND CRACKS THE WINDSHIELD DUE TO THE FLATNESS AND ANGLE OF THE WINDOWS. WINDOW IS CONSTANTLY CRACKED.
THE SPRING WHICH BRINGS THE GAS PEDAL BACK UP AFTER YOU PUSH IT, FELL OFF IT'S MOUNTING. SO WHEN YOU PUSH THE GAS, THE GAS STAYS PUSHED. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REINSTALLED THE SAME SPRING. BUT I FEEL THIS PART SHOULD BE MOUNTED MORE SECURELY. I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE PROBLEM WHILE MY CAR WAS IN "PARK" IN MY DRIVEWAY. HAD IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS DRIVING, I COULD HAVE BEEN HURT OR KILLED. IS THIS A PATTERN, ARE DEALERSHIPS REQUIRED TO REPORT THIS. WHEN I WAS PULLING UP TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME AT A LIGHT, HAVING JUST EXITED A HIGHWAY, MY CAR ACCELERATED INSTEAD OF SLOWING TO A STOP. I WAS ABLE TO PULL INTO THE NEXT LANE OVER TO AVOID HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. LUCKILY THERE WERE NO CARS COMING OR IN THAT LANE ALREADY. I WAS NOT HURT NOR DID ANY DAMAGE. THIS IS ONE OF THREE INSTANCES OF UNINTENDED ACELERATION. THE OTHER TWO WERE WHILE PARKING. NO INJURY OR DAMAGE HAS OCCURRED WITH ANY OF THE INCIDENCES.
DOOR LOCKS WILL UNLOCK HALF WAY UNABLE TO EXIT CAR. DOOR LOCKS WILL CLICK OPEN AND CLOSE INDEPENDENTLY WHILE DRIVING AND WHEN PARKED, USING KEY REMOTE TO LOCK CAR AND WHILE WALKING AWAY I HEAR CAR LOCKS CLICK. I WALK BACK TO CAR TO FIND ALL DOORS UNLOCKED? REAR HATCH HANDLE ASSEMBLY VERY FLIMSY. IS NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO PULL DOOR OPEN. MINE CAME OFF IN MY HAND SQUEEZING THE RELEASE THEN PULLING IT OPEN! CANNOT OPEN FROM OUTSIDE WITHOUT IT OR IN AN EMERGENCY. ALSO WITHOUT THE HANDLE THERE IS NO ILLUMINATION OF THE LICENSE PLATE WHICH GETS YOU PULLED OVER AND GETS YOU A TICKET!

I WAS IN MOTION GOING ABOUT 35 MILES PER HOUR. I ACCELERATED RAPIDLY UP TO 40 MPH AND WHEN I EASED OFF THE GAS, THE CAR CONTINUED TO REV/ACCELERATE. I TRIED PUSHING THE BRAKE BUT THE CAR RESISTED. I CHANGED GEARS INTO NEUTRAL (I HAVE AN AUTOMATIC) AND THOUGH IT REVVED REALLY LOUDLY, WHEN I PUT IT BACK INTO DRIVE, IT WAS RESPONSIVE AGAIN TO THE GAS AND BRAKE.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2006 SCION XB. WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH, THE VEHICLE VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND LEFT. THE CONTACT CROSSED INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND CRASHED INTO A MOUNTAIN SIDE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A FRACTURED BREAST BONE AND RIBS THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND NOT DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000. UPDATED 09/29/16*LJ *TR
THERE IS A TSB FOR THE XA MODELS OF THIS SAME YEAR. MY VEHICLE HAS SAME DESIGN OF EMISION SYSTEM AS THE XA AND SEEMS TO BE THE SAME PROBLEM. THE FUEL FILLER NECK ALLOWS WATER TO INTRUDE INTO THE CHARCOAL CANISTER EVAP. SYSTEM AND THEREFORE CAUSING FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 85,000.
THE DOOR LOCKS FAILED TO OPERATE. I WAS TRAPPED INSIDE AND COULD NOT OPEN THE DOORS. THE KEY WAS ALSO PREVENTED FROM UNLOCKING THE DOORS. AFTER CONSIDERABLE EFFORT I WAS ABLE TO UNLOCK A REAR DOOR AND EXIT THERE. LATER I COULD NEITHER LOCK OR UNLOCK ANY OF THE DOORS. THE CAR WAS PARKED. IT DID NOT MATTER IF THE ENGINE WAS RUNNING OR NOT OR IF THE "KEY BOB" OR DOOR LOCK SWITCH OR MANUALLY PULLING/PUSHING THE LOCK LEVER; NOTHING WOULD ALTER THE LOCKED STATUS. GRATEFUL THERE WAS NOT AN EMERGENCY SUCH AS A FIRE.
THE RUBBER PIECE THAT COVERS THE SWITCH FOR THE REAR HATCH HAS MELTED FOR THE THIRD TIME. I HAD IT REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY THE FIRST TIME AND THEN AGAIN WHEN THE WHOLE GARNISH FELL OFF AND WAS REPLACED UNDER A "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT". IN OTHER WORDS A RECALL BECAUSE IT HAD HAPPENED TO SO MANY SCION XB OWNERS. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THEY CONTINUE TO REPLACE A DEFECTIVE PART WITH A DEFECTIVE PART! NOW I AM SUPPOSED TO FORK OUT $90.00 FOR ANOTHER PART THAT IS GOING TO EVENTUALLY DO THE SAME THING. THIS IS CLEARLY A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS A SEARCH FOR "MELTED SWICH COVERS ON SCION XB" ON YOUR COMPUTER AND IT BRINGS UP MANY SITES. THERE ARE BLOGS AND EVEN A FACEBOOK PAGE DEDICATED TO THE FAULTY HANDLES! WHEN THERE ARE COMPANIES WHO ARE MAKING A PROFIT PRODUCING ENHANCED REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR YOUR CAR BECAUSE TOYOTA WON'T SOMETHING IS WRONG. I WILL BE BUYING MY REPLACEMENT PARTS FROM THEM. VERY DISAPPOINTED IN TOYOTA.
WIFE WAS DRIVING HOME HIT A PARKED CAR DRIVING AT 25MPH. NO AIR BAG WAS DEPLOYED, SUFFERED BRUSING TO CHEST AND STOMACH
I WAS DRIVING ALONG AND WANTED TO PUT MY REAR PASSENGER WINDOW DOWN SLIGHTLY TO LET AIR CIRCULATE. I NOTICED THAT IT DID NOT MOVE WHEN I HIT THE CONTROL FROM THE FRONT SEAT. LATER AFTER I STOPPED, I WENT AROUND AND OPENED THE DOOR AND TRIED THE SWITCH ON THE DOOR. THE WINDOW WOULD NOT OPEN. I CONTACTED SCION BY EMAIL AND THEY TOOK DOWN THE INFORMATION AND ASSIGNED ME CASE #150808054 AND TOLD ME TO CONTACT THEM BY PHONE. I DID AND SPOKE WITH LAUREN WHO WAS VERY GRACIOUS AND TOOK INFO FROM ME BUT HAD NO RESOLUTION FOR THE PROBLEM AND TOLD ME THE DEALERSHIP WOULD HAVE TO GIVE ME A PRICE ON REPAIRING IT. THE DEALERSHIP CONTACTED ME AND SAID IT WOULD BE BETWEEN $300 AND $500 DEPENDING ON WHAT WAS WRONG TO FIX IT. THE GENTLEMEN TOLD ME THERE WAS NOTHING MORE TO BE DONE IF SCION DIDN'T OFFER TO REPAIR IT FOR ME. I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN AND CANNOT AFFORD THIS TYPE OF COST TO REPAIR A WINDOW. THEREFORE I AM DRIVING WITH IT UNABLE TO OPEN. NOW AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. IF SOMEONE IS IN THE BACKSEAT AND FOR ANY REASON WOULD NEED TO GET THAT WINDOW DOWN AND COULDN'T IT COULD BE VERY SERIOUS. A WINDOW SHOULD WORK AS LONG AS THE CAR IS ON THE ROAD AND THERE IS NOTHING TO OVERRIDE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM TO OPEN THE WINDOW. THIS LOOKS LIKE A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE TO ME. I WENT ONLINE AND FOUND THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVING THIS ISSUE WITH THIS PARTICULAR CAR. SCION SEEMS TOTALLY UNCONCERNED AND OFFERED NO HELP. WHAT CAN BE DONE IF ANYTHING? YOU ARE MY LAST HOPE FOR RESOLVING THIS...IT MAKES ME EXTREMELY NERVOUS TO KNOW THAT WINDOW CANNOT BE OPENED FOR WHATEVER REASON IT MIGHT NEED TO BE. I WILL APPRECIATE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME ON THIS. THANK YOU.

THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED UNINTENDED ACCELERATION GOING THROUGH SEVERAL CURVES, DOWN AN EMBANKMENT, CRASHED THROUGH TWO METAL FENCES, AND LANDED IN A FOUNTAIN OF APPROXIMATELY THREE FEET OF WATER. THE FRONT AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM DID NOT ACTIVATE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
THE FRONT WINDSHIELD CRACKED SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT BEING USED. NOTHING HIT IT OR HAPPENED TO THE CAR. IT WAS JUST SITTING IN MY DRIVEWAY FACING THE SUN. I HAD JUST BEEN IN THE VEHICLE 15 MINUTES EARLIER GETTING SOMETHING OUT OF IT AND THE WINDSHIELD WAS FINE. THE NEXT TIME I LOOKED AT IT A CRACK DEVELOPED AT THE TOP OF THE WINDSHIELD BEHIND THE REAR VIEW MIRROR THAT BRANCHED OUT INTO TWO HORIZONTAL LINES. LOOKING ONLINE THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR SCION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2006 TOYOTA SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESPOND. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE INDEPENDENTLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE THROTTLE NEEDED TO BE CLEANED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE BRAKE PEDAL FAILED TO RESPOND CAUSING THE CONTACT TO CRASH INTO A POLE. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155,000.
THE DRIVER SEAT SUDDENLY WENT BACK SKIPPING MULTIPLE SEAT SETTINGS. LUCKILY, I AM FAIRLY STRONG (AS WELL AS THE STEERING COLUMN) I WAS ABLE TO HOLD ON TO THE STEERING WHEEL UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. BEFORE THE SEAT FAILED, I DID NOT CHANGE ANY SEAT POSITION (I PROBABLY ADJUSTED IT A WEEK BEFORE IT HAPPENED). IT HAPPENED AGAIN IN FEBRUARY, THAT TIME IT HAPPENED TO ME IMMEDIATELY AFTER PUTTING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IN PARK THE SEAT DROPPED BACK ONE POSITION BACK. AFTER ALL THIS ALL HAPPENED I TOOK MY CAR TO MY LOCAL DEALER (TOYOTA OF TAMPA BAY) WHERE THEY LOOKED AT THE SEAT AND SAID THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I AM SLIGHTLY SUSPICIOUS THAT THEY DID FIX SOMETHING BUT DID NOT WANT TO ADMIT THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF THIS HAPPENED TO SOMEONE ELSE OR IF I WAS DRIVING FASTER (E.G. ON THE INTERSTATE) WHERE SMALLER ADJUSTMENTS TO THE STEERING CAN CAUSE SEVERE INJURIES, IF NOT FATALITIES.
SEAT RELEASE BUTTON STAYS OPENED AND DOES NOT LOCK BACK UP. SAFETY ISSUE, BECAUSE THE SEAT WILL MOVE IF NOT LOCKED IN PLACE.
WHEN WE ATTEMPTED TO EXIT THE VEHICLE WE WERE NOT ABLE TO UNLOCK THE DOORS. THE LOCKS WOULD ONLY GO UP ABOUT HALF WAYS THEN LOCK AGAIN. I DID SOME ONLINE SEARCHING AND SEE THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE HAD THE SAME COMPLAINT. MY CONCERN IS IF IN A CAR ACCIDENT YOU CAN NOT UNLOCK THE DOORS AND YOU CAN BECOME TRAPPED IN YOUR VEHICLE. YOU CAN NOT EVEN UNLOCK THE DOORS MANUALLY. *TR
WAS LEAVING THE HOUSE, GOT IN CAR, STARTED ENGINE, PUT MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE THEN PUT THE GEAR SHIFT INTO REVERSE AND PROCEEDED TO PULL OUT OF GARAGE WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN FOR NO REASON WHATSOEVER THE CAR JUST TOOK OFF ON ITS OWN TOO FAST, WHILE MY FOOT WAS STILL ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR ACCELERATED TOO QUICKLY AND I NEARLY CRASHED INTO THE NEIGHBOR'S GARAGE DOOR. *TR
T-BONE ACCIDENT WHERE I WAS HIT AT DRIVER'S FRONT WHEEL AND ROLLED. FRONT OF THE CAR WAS DESTROYED. NO AIRBAG DEPLOYED. AT FAULT DRIVER STATED GOING 55 MPH, THROUGH STOPS SIGNS, HITTING ME. I WAS DOING 55 AND SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES, SO I WAS DOING SOMEWHAT LESS THAN 55. I WAS PINNED IN THE XB AND HAD TO BE CUT OUT. I ENDED UP PINNED WITH THE STEERING WHEEL A FEW INCHES FROM MY FACE. AN ATTEMPT TO CUT STEERING WHEEL OFF TO GET ROOM TO GET ME OUT AND TO AVOID THE AIRBAG FROM FIRING OFF IN MY FACE, FAILED. THE "JAWS OF LIFE" WASN'T ABLE TO CUT THROUGH THE STEERING COLUMN. I DO NOT KNOW THE REASON. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 SCION XB. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR HATCH WAS DISCONNECTED FROM THE BODY. THE CONTACT PLACED THE HATCH BACK INTO PLACE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TWO TOP HINGES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

TWO OCCURRENCES WITHIN 3 DAYS, UNINTENDED FULL ACCELERATION - ACCELERATOR STUCK AT FULL THROTTLE. *TR
I NOTICED A FEW WEEKS AGO THAT WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN THE LIFT GATE, THAT MY FINGERS WERE COVERED IN A BLACK MUSHY SUBSTANCE. THE SWITCH TO OPEN THE DOOR WAS COMPLETELY MELTED AND WOULD BARELY OPEN. MY WIFE AND I DON'T USUALLY USE THE HATCH DOOR, SO I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG ITS BEEN IN THIS CONDITION . WE HAVE BEEN VERY HAPPY WITH THE SCION UP TO THIS POINT.I FOUND OUT THAT MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM AND FEEL TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED IN TOYOTA'S PRODUCT. I'M SERIOUSLY PLANNING ON TAKING THIS FLAW TO THE MEDIA SINCE THE DOOR MAY NOT EVEN OPEN IN AN EMERGENCY. THE OTHERS HAVE TOLD ME THAT IT IS NO LONGER COVERED BY WARRANTY, AND TOYOTA REFUSES TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS OVER $200.00 TO FIX IT. THE HANDLE TO MY BACK TRUNK DOOR IS MADE OF SOME SORT OF PLASTIC AND LIVING IN THE SOUTH HAS POSSIBLY CAUSED IT TO START MELTING. IT HAS SLOWLY MELTED, DRIPPING TAR LIKE MATERIAL ONTO MY REAR BUMPER OF MY SCION XB. EVERY TIME I OPEN MY TRUNK, THE BLACK TAR MATERIAL WILL END UP ON MY HANDS AND I AM UNSURE OF HOW SAFE THIS PRODUCT IS TO MY HEALTH. *TR
MANUAL TRANSMISSION CLUTCH PIVOT BOLT FAILED WHILE VEHICLE WAS AT SPEED. CLUTCH PEDAL STOPPED WORKING, TRANSMISSION STUCK IN GEAR AND COULD NOT BE SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. REQUIRED EVASIVE ACTIONS TO AVOID COLLISION. MECHANIC DISASSEMBLED TRANSMISSION AND LOCATED SHEARED OFF PIVOT BOLT LYING LOOSE INSIDE TRANSMISSION CASING. MECHANIC STATED THAT IN THEIR EXPERIENCE, INCIDENT WAS VERY UNUSUAL AND NOT A COMMON OCCURRENCE: IN THEIR OPINION, CAUSE WAS LIKELY A MANUFACTURING FAULT IN BOLT. MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT REST OF TRANSMISSION AND CLUTCH SHOWED NO SIGNS OF PREMATURE WEAR OR DRIVER ABUSE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA SCION XB. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE INDEPENDENTLY ACCELERATED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DECELERATE AFTER FORCE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE FAILURE RECURRED FOUR TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ACCELERATION FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
THE VEHICLES REAR HATCH HANDLE HAS A DESIGN FLAW WHICH MAKES THE PART FAIL. THE REAR HATCH HANDLE IS FASTENED TO THE TRUNK/HATCH WITH PLASTIC CLIPS. WHEN THE RELEASE BUTTON FOR THE HATCH IS PRESSED, IT ONLY UNLOCKS THE HATCH DOOR. IT DOES NOT SPRING UPWARD LIKE OTHER VEHICLES. IN THE MANUAL IT SHOWS TO HOLD THE RELEASE BUTTON AND LIFT WITH THE HATCH HANDLE. BECAUSE THERE ARE NO SPRINGS TO HELP LIFT IT APPLIES LOTS OF PRESSURE TO THE CLIPS WHICH WEAKEN THEM. EVENTUALLY, THEY JUST SNAP. THEY ARE ALSO KNOWN FOR SNAPPING WHEN THE HATCH IS LOCKED, IN COLD WEATHER, AND THERE ARE EVEN REPORTS OF THE RELEASE BUTTON MELTING. ANOTHER PROBLEM DEVELOPS WHEN THE HATCH HANDLE IS COMPLETELY REMOVED AFTER FAILING. THERE ARE HOLES FOR THE CLIPS WHICH ARE LEFT OPEN IF THIS PIECE IS NOT ATTACHED. THESE HOLES CAN ALLOW EXHAUST AND OTHER EMISSIONS INTO THE VEHICLE. LASTLY, THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF BECOMING TRAPPED IN THE VEHICLE. IF THERE WERE AN ACCIDENT THAT LEFT THE SIDE DOORS INOPERABLE AND THE PERSON(S) IN THE VEHICLE WERE ABLE TO EXIT SAFELY THROUGH THE HATCH, THEY ARE UNABLE TO DO SO. THIS VEHICLE IS NOT EQUIPPED WITH ANY TYPE OF MANUAL RELEASE (WHICH IS NOT REQUIRED BY LAW). HOWEVER, RESCUERS CANNOT OPEN THE HATCH FROM THE OUTSIDE EITHER. THIS IS BECAUSE WHEN THIS DEFECTIVE PART BREAKS OFF, IT LEAVES THE DANGLING RELEASE BUTTON. CONSUMERS ARE CAPPING THE WIRES SO IT DOESN'T RIP OFF WHILE DRIVING. THERE IS NOW NO WAY TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. *TR

THE DRIVERS SIDE SEATBELT WHERE IT ATTACHES TO THE BASE BETWEEN THE SEATS IS LOOSE. THE TAILGATE HATCH ASSEMBLY BROKE OFF. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO OPEN THE TRUNK AND IT IS A CHEAP PIECE OF PLASTIC ATTACHED TO THE HATCHBACK WITH 2 SCREWS. AS I WAS TRYING TO OPEN THE TRUNK, THE WHOLE ASSEMBLY CAME OFF IN MY HAND. I HAVE SEEN THIS IN SEVERAL OTHER SCIONS AROUND TOWN. *TR
2006 TOYOTA SCION XB REAR HATCH RELEASE. IT BROKE WITHOUT ANY FAULTY USE. THE TOYOTA REPLACEMENT IS NOT SUBSTANTIAL ENOUGH TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. THE BROKEN PART INTERFERES WITH THE PLATE LIGHTS, THE ELECTRIC HATCH RELEASE AND ALLOWS EXHAUST FUMES TO ENTER VEHICLE THROUGH NORMALLY COVERED HOLES. I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM WORK AND WHEN I CAME TO A STOP LIGHT, I TRIED TO COME A STOP AND WHEN I TRIED TO BRAKE THE CAR KEPT DRIVING AND I WRECKED IN TO A FENCE AND CRASHING INTO A TREE. *TR
I HAVE A TOYOTA 2006 SCION XB THAT I PURCHASED NEW AND AM EXTREMELY FOND OF IT. IN MARCH OF 2014, THE IGNITION SWITCH STARTED SUSPICIOUSLY LOOSENING UP, MOVING AROUND WHEN THE KEY WAS INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION AND PROGRESSED IN LOOSENING UP TO THE POINT WHERE THE IGNITION KEY WAS ABLE TO BE COMPLETELY PULLED OUT/REMOVED AFTER INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION TO TURN THE CAR ON AND RUN THE ENGINE. THE SHOCKINGLY DANGEROUS THING WAS THAT THE ENGINE COULD CONTINUE TO RUN AND COULD BE DRIVEN. IT WAS A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE DUE TO ENGINE BEING AT RISK OF SHUTTING OFF, LOSING THE ABILITY TO STEER OR ENGAGE THE BRAKES AND BEING OUT OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE ONE IS DRIVING. I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND HAD MY SCION XB ASSESSED AND REPAIRED TO THE TUNE OF $463.00 AT THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REPORTED NO RECALLS WERE ISSUED FOR THIS MALFUNCTION. I KNOW THAT GM HAD A BIG, INTENTIONALLY DELAYED RECALL, RELATED TO THIS IGNITION/IGNITION SWITCH MALFUNCTION OF SOME OF THEIR VEHICLES WHICH LED TO A NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS WITH SOME DEATHS RESULTING. THIS WAS REPORTEDLY DUE TO ACCIDENTS WHERE THE CAR IS BEING DRIVEN, THE IGNITION/IGNITION SWITCH MALFUNCTIONS AND THE ENGINE STOPS RUNNING. I WOULD LIKE TOYOTA AND OTHER SCION OWNERS TO KNOW THAT THIS HAS OCCURRED AND COULD BE POTENTIALLY LETHAL. *TR
THE REAR HATCH HANDLE ON MY 06 SCION XB HAS BROKEN OFF ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND NOW JUST HANGS THERE. I CAN HARDLY EVER GET INTO MY TRUNK BECAUSE OF THIS. I AM WORRIED THAT IT WILL COME OFF COMPLETELY AS I AM DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND BECOME A DANGEROUS HAZARD FOR ANOTHER DRIVER. ALSO THE REAR LATCH BUTTON RUBBER COVER BECOMES SO HOT THAT IT BEGINS TO MELT. WHEN YOU PUSH THE BUTTON IT WILL LEAVE BLACK REIDUE ON YOUR HANDS. THIS PREVENTS THE BUTTON FROM WORKING AND UNLATCHING THE BACK HATCH. NOT SURE IF IT IS MELTING DUE TO ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS OR THE SUN. WORRIED COULD GET TO HOT AND CATCH FIRE SOMETIME. *TR

AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT ERRONEOUSLY ENGAGED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE HOWEVER, PROCEEDED TO REINSTALL THE PEDAL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND SENT AN ENGINEER TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINEER ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PERFORMING UP TO STANDARDS AND DID NOT PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 124,791 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 145,000.
