Battery continuously dies, likely due to a parasitic drain, and it is extremely hard-taking up to 15 to 20 minutes to open the car door using the the wierd key you slide out of the key fob. As a woman, it is very dangerous when my battery dies and I am in a dark parking lot and I can't even get inside the car and lock the door for safety. Been happening for years lastest time was today 02/17/2026. For some reason, the class action suit said I was not a class member for the same problem.
THIS IS THE SECOND SUCH EXPERIENCE WITH THIS CAR! On Friday, September 12, 2025 at 3:32 p.m., I was driving slowly in a parking lot preparing to park. As I started to turn the car into the parking space, my car surged forward without my pressing on the gas pedal. I pressed on the brake, and the car came to a stop.
Unable to remove key when turning the engine off. Eventually works after several tries of turning the engine on and off.
Sometimes when starting from a stop or slowing down to make a turn the engine revs up like I was pushing the gas pedal. When this happens ( 4 times in the last 6 months) luckily I was covering the break to slow down or going very slow from a stop. Each time I was turning left or right. I was able to push the shifter into neural. After applying the breaks the engine slows down
Car battery dies after the vehicle sits for longer periods (approximately 2 weeks or more?). Roadside assistance has tested battery twice after jumping the vehicle and stated the battery is still healthy. Various Subara owners report similar situations in online forums, and the culprit seems to be a design flaw where the DCM module is trying to connect with the obsolete 3G cellular network, causing a parasitic battery drain.
Parking Brake harness is defaulty.
purchased my 2016 legacy in 2022, I was offered the bronze warranty due to milage. My vehicle was bought back due to loud noises coming from the engine. Was told there was a peze recall and it was fixed. Brought it back to the dealership for the same sound and they found nothing wrong. A few weeks later leaving work, I noticed my muffler was hanging. I took it to a local muffler shop where the repaired it and repaired the heat shield which was loose and knocking up against the exhaust. Still taking my vehicle to the dealership for the warranty clear coat/ zetec and was told that I needed two-wheel bearings and that I was over milage, that it wouldn't be covered. I had both wheel bearing replaced and rear brakes within the first year of having the vehicle. Later part of 2024 my dashboard was lighting up, not allowing any of my safety features to work and I have no traction in the snow. I took the vehicle back to the dealership where I was told that it had a bad valve body, That the vehicle was over the milage for the extended warranty repair. I was sold a lemon, but there is nothing I can do about it.
There is an active recall for Subaru vehicles. The recall is for emissions number WUB-87 for 2015-2018MY Legacy and Outback 2.5L. My car is a 2016 Subaru Legacy and it has the exact problem listed in the recall, but is not included. The front end exhaust is defective as described in the recall.
The contact owns a 2016 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while driving at 60 MPH, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact became aware that while the check engine light remained illuminated the horn failed to function as designed. The contact stated that after the check engine warning light issue was resolved the horn returned to normal functionality. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance; however, the manufacturer informed the contact that the failure was a known issue and advised the contact to stop driving the vehicle until the check engine warning light issue was resolved. The failure mileage was 184,000.
Slowing to pull into parking spot and car accelerates and hits what is in front of vehicle. Has happened at least four times. Last time 11/5/2024
I went to the store with an intact and unblemished windshield. After returning to the vehicle, a crack in the passenger side of the windshield appeared with no chip or damage visible. After only a day, this cracked had tripled in length with weekly crackling sounds. This is a known issue with Subarus and the manufacturer is trying to be selective with repairs. My vehicle has the EyeSight system and will cost me $1100.00 to repair because it's $700.00 to calibrate the system after glass repair..
Battery has failed twice in a matter of a year. Both batteries were top of the line and no reason can be seen for failure. I see that there are a great deal of the same sort of complaints listed here and Subaru should be well aware of this issue.
The contact owns a 2016 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the vehicle accelerated at high-speed without warning, causing the vehicle to drive over a curb and into oncoming traffic. The contact desperately depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact was able to regain control and stopped the vehicle. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and case was filed by the dealer. The failure mileage was 35,000.
I've own a 2016 Subaru Legacy Limited 3.6, for coming on 2 years. In the last 3 months I've had to replace my battery twice. The last being a red top battery costing $300+ and only lasted 2 days. The first incident that was most disruptive was, driving home in rush hour traffic when I lost all power, radio cut out, all lights on dash go out, my car begins to sputter and there is no power steering. Once traffic rolled to a stop it dies and wouldn't turn back over, couldn't pull my key from the ignition, roll the windows up, and once in park I couldn't change to neutral. It was very dangerous due to traffic, and I was stuck on a bridge that was a main arterial, with no emergency flashers. Had to have the city law enforcement call to get my car removed from the roadway. Had it towed to the dealership I purchased it from. The next day they told me my battery was dead and I needed a new one. Tested my alternator and that test good. Then again it died under the same symptoms as it did the first time. Leaving me stranded on a busy highway, at 10 at night. All of my symptoms were directly related to my a/c being on and sitting too long without driving, at idle or stop and go traffic and progrssively got to being a main battery drain. My key ittermediately wont pull from the ignition, steering wheel wont lock in place. My windows will randomly not roll up, but bounce down and stop halfway and lock temporarily in that position. I believe its all electrical problems or voltage issues. None the less... if there is no way to repair this, than it should be a recall..... because it's a serious problem with no solution and Subaru is fully aware of it.
Steering did not return to neutral position after making a right turn, steering wanted to continue on right turn. I was able to pull it back to straight position with some needed force. I don't believe my wife would be able , after initial surprise, to steer back into lane of traffic. Result could have been an accident. I have not reproduced the problem at dealer or independent service facility or by manufacturer and because of no accident police or insurance co. not called. There were no warning signs. I just recently pudchased this vehicle within past week. I would call your attention to the articles on internet describing the problem and how to repair I don't think I should pay for repair as it is a recurring problem with other cars by same manufacturer. Replaced battery but still all dash lights come on I lose power and it dies. I can jump start it and it stay but all lights stay on. New starter, new alternator, I just don't know what it is. Only code that comes up is P0420
I was driving on the interstate going about 75 mph and suddenly my hood popped up and blocked my view. The hood cracked the windshield and was pushed back, in a way that doesn't allow it to close anymore. The hood warning light was not showing and I have driven hours earlier at highway speeds without a problem. The hood jack is snapped off. The problem has not been reproduced or looked at by my insurance, or a service center yet.
This concern is not related to the VIN number listed. I Have concerns with Aftermarket wheels in general. as the service manager of a shop I am seeing aftermarket wheels that are cracking under normal use due to poor metal quality and design. I have seen dual bolt pattern wheels that crack at the lug nut mounting hole when torquing to the vehicle manufacture spec. I have seen many aftermarket wheels installed with incorrect lug nuts and incorrect or missing hub centric devices. I Believe that the public does not understand the safety concerns of aftermarket wheels.
There was a recall for my 2016 Subaru Legacy transmission issue (CVT), I got a letter from Subaru on 9/23/2018 which extended warranty for 2016-2017 Legacy/Outback CVT from 5 years/60000 miles to 10 years/100000 miles, started from 9/30/2019. The transmission of my Subaru started making noise half year ago which was still under warranty, at that time I didn't think it was a big deal and totally forgot the letter from Subaru, however, the noise is aloud and unbearable now, the mileages of my car is about 5000 miles exceeding 100000 miles warranty, which I need to pay $8200 to replace transmission per Subaru client service USA. After browsing online, I have noticed that the issue of CVT on Subaru Legacy is common, in this case, Subaru should replace such defective CVT for free, at least for the part.
Consistent problems with parasitic battery drain. If the car is ever left to sit for more than two weeks, the battery will have died. I have to be careful because the battery does not recoup the energy required to start the vehicle in city driving. The second battery I installed in the car (7/2021) has failed prematurely and again requires replacement.
Battery drainage issue: Battery failed in my 2016 Subaru legacy in 2019, replaced with a new battery and died again in 2020, 2021, and 2022. This should be a recall not a class action lawsuit. Leaving someone stranded is a safety issue. No warning was given when the battery died. It was fine one day and dead the next day. Had to tow the vehicle at my expense to the Subaru dealership and was told that they needed to replace the battery, which I had to pay for and they performed an OBDII reprogramming of the engine control module. The dealership indicated that this should help with the drainage problem but I was not given a guarantee.
BATTERY DIED BECAUSE OF A DRAIN PROBLEM. I HAD TO REPLACE 2 BATTERIES IN ONE YEAR AND TEN MONTHS. HOW MANY BATTERIES MUST I REPLACED BEFORE SUBARU DOES A RECALL? IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN DO?
Having a problem with battery draining while the car is turned off. Experienced it previously 24,095 miles and 3 years on the first battery. Had to call AAA and get a jump start, and simply replaced the battery (9/18/19). Over the last year started experiencing similar problems with the replacement battery, and bought a battery charger, so when it would not start in the morning, I would put it on the charger and use my other car (a 2020 Subaru Forester). Took the Legacy to the dealer (10/15/22 - 39,224 odometer reading), he tested the battery, and said there was no problem. Went on vacation for 5 days, came back, and again the car would not start. Took it to another battery dealer, after charging, and they also said there was no problem with the battery. Recently found out that Subaru has agreed to a settlement in a class action lawsuit. Since Subaru understands the problem Hardware/ Software problem with the CAN system, why the affected vehicles are not subject to recall. Vehicles include 2015 - 2020 Outback; 2025 - 2020 Forester; 2015 - 2020 Legacy; 2015 - 2020 WRX; 2019 - 2020 Ascent. I would think the possibility of stranding a motorist in a remote location, adverse weather conditions, etc. would deem this defect to be serious safety defect.
Start up issues, often need to jump vehicle with a relatively new battery. Power window issues
I had a transmission failure on my 2016 Subaru Legacy and there were no warning signs before this incident occurred. I was on a road trip driving at highway speeds and suddenly without warning I heard a loud bang. Then the "at oil temp" light came on, then the "check engine light", smelled something burning and also felt some slipping in the transmission. I pulled over as soon as I could. I towed it to the nearest dealer and they diagnosed the problem as being a bad valve body based on the code "P0712: Transmission Temperature Sensor Circuit Low" without test driving the vehicle. The valve body was replaced. Since my car's mileage was outside the extended warranty for this issue, Subaru only contributed half the cost of the repair. After the completion of the repair, the dealer told me they heard loud transmission noises and they recommended that my transmission may have to be replaced I test drove the vehicle with the service manager, except for the noise, the car had no warning lights and the car was shifting smoothly and was reassured that the car would not stall. After leaving the dealership, I drove 25 miles before the car started jerking and violently shaking. Then at a stop light on a highway, the car stalled. When I press the accelerator, the engine would rev but the car would not move. The vehicle was towed home, my car still would not move when I pressed the accelerator and the check engine light came on. I towed it to my local dealer, they checked the vehicle and said the transmission had an internal failure and replaced the transmission. The bad transmission was sent back to Subaru per their policy. Subaru did a goodwill warranty repair that covered a significant portion of the cost. This sudden transmission failure was a huge safety risk to myself and others. I could have rear-ended both times my car stalled.
The contact owns a 2016 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the oil warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed with oil leaking from the driver's side front cam carrier, rocker cover, and head gasket. The dealer informed the contact that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 54,514.
I been having issues with my brake When I’m driving out of know where my whole brake goes all the way down and it takes a minute to actually brake. As well when that happens my eyesight goes off. This is a big risk I’m taking when im driving. I took my car to the Subaru dealership and they couldn’t find the reason why my car is doing it.
I bought the car used in 07/2020. Took the vehicle to get it checked at a Subaru Dealership Service center. When I returned to pick up my car, it would not start. The shop checked told me the battery was dead and would need to be replaced. I complained that it was functioning fine when I put it in and their reports did not state any issues with the battery. After much complaining they offered a free oil change but I had to pay for the battery. Now, only 26 months into the new battery, it is showing corrosion build up on the battery. Powder and acid. A non Subaru shop just serviced the car and the safety check revealed that the battery was in "Fair" condition with reduced CCA.
UNKNOWN- Car electrical system drains battery to the point, after short drives, does not have sufficient amperage to start motor. No problem with battery, replaced many times, Took vehicle to dealer to trace issue and was told no issue. I found a class action Lawsuit that describe the same issue on multiple car models including mine. My spouse is a handicapped driver and has been left stranded, leaving her in a unsafe environment. No warning signs, first occurred 2017 and several times during the years. Recent failure 08/16/2022
The contact owned a 2016 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle, it suddenly accelerated crashing a small tree causing the contact to reverse the vehicle. When placed in reverse the vehicle accelerated and crashed into another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. There was damage done to both the tree and other vehicle. The vehicle was towed and deemed total. A police report was filed. The contact had received a bruise on their knee and sought out medical attention. The contact dealer was not made aware of the falure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 17,000.
On Thursday evening, January 27, 2022, when I was driving slowly in a parking lot preparing to park, my car unexpectedly accelerated even though I had NOT pressed on the gas pedal. (I would describe it as lurching). After it accelerated on its own, I quickly pressed on the brake pedal, and the car came to a stop. My car is available for inspection upon request. Had this happened when a person, car or other object was in front of my car, my car could have hit the person, car, or other object injuring the other person and me and damaging the object. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed. I drove a short distance home that day and have driven the car on a few errands since. The vehicle has not been inspected. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the incident. There were no warning lamps after the incident.
Hello! I have a 2016 Subaru Legacy and have been experiencing issues with battery drain over the last 2 years. I have replaced the battery multiple times, the computer modular, and even the alternator with no solution. My safety is at risk as my wife and i both drive this vehicle and have a toddler. The persistent uncertainty on if the vehicle will start puts us at risk to be stranded and is heightened during this pandemic.
Vehicle had significant amount of oil pooled in the battery case holder back approximately Jan 2022 or earlier. Contacted Subaru of Las Vegas and they offered to clean the vehicle believing it was a careless oil change. Next oil change Subaru said I had a minor oil leak. Took it to an outside vendor to have them look at it and they said I didn't have an oil leak. Every oil change after that subaru continued to say I had a leak. But, my oil levels never changed enough to show low oil. Took it to the same vendor again and again they said no oil leak. Took it to another vendor and they changed the gasket cover and leak, but mentioned there was a leak with the cam carrier that needed to be revealed. They recommended taking it to their neighbor vendor that specializes in Subaru and they looked at it and confirmed, but mentioned to contact Subaru and that it should be a covered repair as it is a known issue with Subaru and that they were currently working on one with the same issue. While recently driving it, I noticed what smelled like burning oil. When I looked online I can see numerous years and models of owners reporting the same issue with their Subaru. Contacted my dealer and they said it wasn't covered. Contacted Subaru of America and they are currently investigating it. If your camshaft seal is leaking oil, you need to get it replaced right away. The leak can lead to a fire, and your engine could seize up. It can also damage your timing belt which can cause bent valves, cylinder head damage or camshaft damage. Prior to this, I actually have already repaired the timing belt. I want to ensure that no injury or damage comes to another Subaru vehicle owner having the same issue. I have also just had to repair both axles and my Subaru is a 2016 with 90,000 miles on it.
Car battery has discharged on three occasions within the passed 6 months. There is no warning that the battery is failing, turn car off and go to turn on next day and it won’t start. The battery is one yr old and mechanic gave it passing mark when he checked it. When I researched internet to gather more info I found the class action lawsuit describing my problem on other Subarus and felt it should be documented.

No injuries were reported and no police report was taken. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified. The failure mileage was 28,000.

The contact had to move the shift lever back and forth to take the key out of the ignition switch. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with a faulty shift lever plate that needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and remained at the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 35,000.
I was driving home from work when the windshield cracked from the bottom of the passenger side right by the windshield wiper and now has spiraled up
Key kept randomly getting stuck in the ignition. The Subaru tech found that the Select Lever Assembly needed to be replaced.
Hello, I'm trying to send this email to make NHTSA that Subaru has been having an issue with the ignition key for years. I purchased my Subaru Legacy around 2015 and just now started getting issues with the ignition not letting me take out my keys after set as "parked". I noticed that I was not the only one with this issue and Subaru should be made responsible for this shifter malfunction and not the customers. It should be a recall since many cars are experiencing the same issue with different models. I have to play around with the shifter in order to release my keys whenever I set it on park. Hope that this message can get routed to the right department and find a solution for this ongoing issue for many customers. Thank you in advance.
Ignition key stuck in ignition. Cannot remove the key, risk of theft or child entering vehicle and turning vehicle on. Have not had it inspected, many forums online address same issue with Subaru vehicles. Subaru service bulletin 16-112-18R.
My battery keeps dying. I just had to replace it for the second time this year. Used 2 brands, one from the dealership and the other Interstate. I had the alternator and starter checked but those are working. Something keeps killing my battery and would like it fixed. I have missed appointments and had my car towed having to pay over $600 to get it back.
A 6-inch crack suddenly appeared in the lower driver's side area of the windshield starting from the very edge in the black area. It follows the exact pattern of multiple other windshield crack complaints in this model year. The windshield has already been replaced twice before out-of-pocket due to similar cracking.
Battery discharges very quickly and also isn't able to power up the vehicle on a cold day. The original battery on my vehicle (2016 model) was replaced a year (04/2018) before I purchased the vehicle as a CPO (June 2019), but on multiple occasions after purchase I had issues with starting up the vehicle and not having the battery charging despite having it run for 45 min or longer. I finally went to a dealership when in June 2021 since I wanted the battery replaced expecting that it would be covered under the 85 month pro-rated warranty for the battery replacement in 2018. However, I was asked to pay for the battery as the previous replacement was a "good will" according to the dealership and so was not eligible for a free replacement. Just from the history of the batteries in the vehicle, I'm not convinced of the reliability or the reserve capacity of the battery especially in cold conditions.
Battery drain after 2 years. Can be inspected. Not yet confirmed by independent sources or inspected by outside party. No warning lamps, notices, or cause for battery to drain (no lights on, all doors closed, etc). First happened one day ago, jumped the battery and quickly died again.
BATTERY IS BEING DRAINED WHEN VEHICLE SITS. I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY 2 YEARS AGO AND IS NEEDING TO BE REPLACED AGAIN.
What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Key ignition does not want to release once car is in park and shutdown. I have to wait 15 minutes or more until the ignition decides to release the key. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? It is a safety issue as I can't leave my keys on the ignition and wait until someone steals it. It mostly happens during the summer time. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the problem has been seen by an independence service center. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? My warranty is expired therefore I have not been able to get it inspected without having to pay out of pocket for it. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning messages, and it started about a year ago.
IN THE PROCESS OF TURNING OFF THE VEHICLE; THE CAR IS IN PARK, AND THE KEY INTERMITTENTLY GETS STUCK IN IGNITION.
DROVE ON A STRAIGHT STRETCH OF INTERSTATE AT 75 MPH IN A SUNNY AFTERNOON ON A 400 MILE TRIP WITH FUEL TANK BETWEEN 1/8 AND 1/4 FULL. THE ENGINE SUDDENLY LOST POWER. PRESSED THE GAS TO REV UP THE ENGINE BUT STILL NO POWER MOVING FORWARD. HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER AND STOPPED THE CAR. THAT WAS A PRETTY DANGEROUS SITUATION SINCE IT HAPPENED WITHOUT ANY WARNINGS. TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR BUT FAILED. THE STARTER TURNS BUT ENGINE WILL NOT START. ATTEMPTED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE PERIOD OF 30 - 40 MINUTES TO NO AVAIL. HAD TO CALL A TOW TRUCK TO A SHOP NEAR BY. ONCE UNLOADED (ABOUT 2 HOURS LATER) FROM THE TRUCK, THE TECHNICIAN HOOKED ON INSTRUMENTS TO CHECK. THE ELECTRICALS (ALTERNATOR, BATTERY) WERE FINE. THEN RESTARTING THE ENGINE WORKED. SHORTLY AFTER, THE LOW FUEL WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. NOT CONFIDENT OF CONTINUING THE TRIP, STAYED IN THE TOWN OVERNIGHT. CHECKED THE INTERNET FORUMS THE NEXT DAY AND READ SIMILAR EXPERIENCES BY SOME SUBARU OWNERS AND REALIZED THAT IT COULD BE RELATED TO LOW-FUEL. WENT TO FILL UP THE GAS TANK AND WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE CLOSE TO 100 MILES TO DESTINATION WITHOUT PROBLEM. NOTED WHEN FILLING UP, THE TANK HAD AT LEAST 2.5 GAL OF FUEL LEFT WHEN THE INCIDENT HAPPENED. CAR HAS 65K ON THE METER. IT WAS BOUGHT NEW AND MAINTAINED ON-SCHEDULE. NO ACCIDENTS OR MODS.
KEY GETS STUCK IN IGNITION. OFTEN WILL NOT RELEASE. HAPPENS WHEN PUT CAR INTO PARK UPON STOPPING.
I'M HAVING ISSUES WITH THE STEERING COLUMN AND GETTING THE KEY OUT. I'M NOT ABLE TO REMOVE THE KEY MOST DAYS. WAS THIS IN ANY PART OF ANY KNOWN RECALL? THANK YOU
