MY CAR JUST TURNED 17000 MILES. I BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2011. IT IS GARAGED WHENEVER NOT IN USE AND HAVE PHOTOS OF IT IN THE GARAGE. THE MUFFLER AND EXHAUST SYSTEM ARE RUSTING VERY BADLY. I WASH THE CAR REGULARLY WHEN DIRTY. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING - THERE MUST BE A DEFECT IN THE TYPE OF MATERIALS USED. I FIRST NOTICED THIS BACK IN JUNE AND IT IS GETTING WORSE. THIS SHOULD BE REPLACED BY SUBARU - I SHOULDN'T NEED A NEW MUFFLER/EXHAUST SYSTEM ON A NEW CAR IN LESS THAN 20,000 MILES! I HAVE TAKEN PHOTOS OF THE PROBLEM THAT I CAN PROVIDE IF REQUESTED. *TR
THE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS HAVE BURNED OUT TWICE. THE CAR IS A 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK, AND IT HAS LESS THAN 30,000 MILES ON IT. THE HEADLIGHT SETTING IS NOT KEPT ON THE "AUTO" SETTING. (SOME CLAIM USING THE AUTO SETTING CAUSES THE LIGHTS TO SWITCH ON-AND-OFF MORE CAUSING ADDITIONAL WEAR TO THE HEADLIGHT.) THE HEADLIGHTS WERE INSTALLED BY A DEALER, SO IT CAN BE ASSUMED THEY WERE INSTALLED TO CORRECT SUBARU SPECIFICATIONS. THE COMMUTE TO AND FROM WORK EVERY DAY IS A SINUOUS, TREE-LINED ROAD, WITH THE OCCASIONAL DEER CROSSING. DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR, THE COMMUTE TO AND FROM WORK IS IN THE DARK. HAVING ONE OR BOTH HEADLIGHTS BURN OUT IS A SAFETY ISSUE; DRIVING WITH THE HIGH-BEAMS ON JUST TO SEE THE ROAD IS ALSO A SAFETY ISSUE AND IS ILLEGAL. *TR
SINCE MAY OF 2012, MY WIFE HAS HAD TO REPLACE THE LOW BEAM LIGHT BULBS ON BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE NO FEWER THAN SIX TIMES. THIS IS A TERRIBLE ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE, AS DRIVING WITH ONE BULB IS BOTH DANGEROUS AND ILLEGAL. IT IS ALSO PROHIBITIVELY EXPENSIVE TO CONTINUE REPLACING THESE BULBS AS THE ACCESS TO THEM IS CONVOLUTED AT BEST. SUBARU NEEDS TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THIS IS A RECURRENT PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE, AND THAT IT PUTS ITS CUSTOMERS AT RISK. A RECALL MUST BE ISSUED BEFORE THERE IS A FATALITY, NOT AFTERWARDS. *TR
SAFETY CONCERNS WITH HESITATION ISSUE WITH TRANSMISSION AT SLOW SPEEDS WHEN APPLYING /GIVING MORE GAS. *TR
I PULLED INTO MY DRIVEWAY (RELATIVELY LEVEL) AND PARKED MY CAR. AS I EXITED THE VEHICLE I NOTICE THAT MY CAR WAS ROLLING FORWARD (I HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION) AND ATTEMPTED TO SET THE ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE BY PUSHING REPEATEDLY ON THE BUTTON TO THE LEFT OF THE STEERING WHEEL. THE PARKING BRAKE DID NOT SET AND MY CAR GAINED SPEED AND CONTINUED DOWNHILL INTO THE WOODS BEHIND MY HOME. I AM NOT SURE IF I WAS DRAGGED OR PARTIALLY IN THE CAR, BUT WAS ABLE TO CLEAR THE VEHICLE BEFORE IT HIT A FENCE, A TREE AND EVENTUALLY COME TO A STOP. THIS HAS HAPPENED IN MY GARAGE ONCE AND AT A GAS STATION, BUT I WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE BY HITTING THE PARKING BRAKE BUTTON. I DO NOT KNOW IF I AM NOT SETTING THE BRAKE BEFORE EXITING OR AM NOT DEPRESSING IT FULLY BEFORE EXITING OR WHY IT DID NOT STOP WHEN I HIT IT REPEATEDLY. I TYPICALLY SET THE CAR IN GEAR, BUT OBVIOUSLY DID NOT DO THIS ON THESE OCCASIONS. *TR
WHILE COMING TO AT STOP VEHICLE WILL SHUTTER AND STALL! AT THE BEGINNING OF OUR OWNERSHIP OF THIS VEHICLE IT WOULD SHUDDER AND THE IDLE WOULD GO VERY LOW, ALMOST STALLING. NOW WHEN WE COME TO A STOP IT WILL STALL! THIS HAS BECOME VERY DANGERIOUS. THERE IS A TSB FROM SUBARU TSB 16-90-13, TSB 16-90-13R CHANGE DESIGN OF TORQUE CONVERTER FROM SOLID BUSHING TYPE TO NEEDLE BEARING TYPE. THRUST WASHER WEAR INSIDE THE TORQUE CONVERTER CAUSES RESTRICTION OF OIL PASSAGE USED TO BLEED OFF LOCK-UP CLUTCH APPLICATION PRESSURE.
THE FIRST TIME THE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT WAS DURING THE COLD MONTHS TWO YEARS AGO AND IT WAS ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE. A YEAR LATER (2013) , THE PASSENGER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT WENT OUT. I JUST REPLACED THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT AGAIN ON NOVEMBER 2, 2014. I HAVE NEVER HAD A VEHICLE, NOR HEARD OF ANYONE I KNOW HAVING A VEHICLE, THAT REQUIRES ANNUAL HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENTS. *TR
I HAVE TO REPLACE THE LOW BEAM HEAD LIGHTS ALL THE TIME ( 6 TIMES SINCE BUYING CAR) DRIVER SIDE 4 TIMES PASSENGER SIDE 2 TIMES. *TR
HEADLAMPS (EITHER SIDE) TEND TO GO OUT YEARLY. THIS IS RIDICULOUS! IN ADDITION, IN ORDER TO CHANGE THEM OUT YOURSELF, YOU NEED TO HAVE LITTLE GIRL HANDS. NOT ONLY IS THIS A NUISANCE, BUT A SAFETY ISSUE. I CAN BARELY SEE WITH ONE LAMP OUT AND THERE ARE DEER EVERYWHERE...RIGHT NOW IT'S FREEZING IN DENVER AND I DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO A HEATED GARAGE TO FIDDLE WITH THIS FOR AN HOUR. SUBARU NEEDS TO GET ON THEIR HORSE AND ADDRESS THIS WIRING ISSUE. IT IS A WIRING ISSUE. NO OTHER EXPLANATION! *TR
THE HEADLIGHTS AND TAIL LIGHTS HAVE FAILED (BURNED OUT) MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE 4 YEARS OF OWNING THE VEHICLE. SOME WITHIN 3 MONTHS OF BEING REPLACED OTHER MIGHT LAST 8 MONTHS TO A YEAR. I AM WONDERING IF THIS IS A WIRING ISSUE CAUSING SUCH SHORT BULB LIFE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT 40 OR 50 MILES AN HOUR, MY HUSBAND TRIES TO SHIFT TO 4TH OR 5TH GEAR AND THE GEAR SLIPS INTO REVERSE. THEN THE CAR CAN'T GO IN REVERSE. WE BOUGHT THE CAR IN JUNE 2011. THIS FIRST HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WAS ABOUT 8 MONTHS OLD. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED BUSHINGS. THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN A FEW MONTHS LATER, ON THE HIGHWAY, WITH MY TWO KIDS IN THE CAR, WHEN MY HUSBAND WAS SHIFTING FROM 5TH TO 6TH. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED BUSHINGS. THE SAME THING HAPPENED ON MAY 11, 2013, WHILE WE WERE ON THE HIGHWAY AND MY HUSBAND WAS SHIFTING FROM 4TH TO 5TH; THE GEAR SLIPPED INTO REVERSE. THE CAR THEN CAN'T GO IN REVERSE. *TR
MY WIFE LEFT THE HOUSE AND SMELLED SMOKE. SHE PULLED OVER AND SHORTLY THEREAFTER FLAMES STARTED SHOOTING OUT OF THE HOOD. SHE GOT OUR DAUGHTER OUT OF THE CAR AND CALLED 911. AS THE POLICE ARRIVED, ONE OF MY NEIGHBORS PUT THE FIRE OUT WITH AN EXTINGUISHER. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED AND LOOKED AT THE DAMAGE AND SAID THE WIPER MOTOR OVERHEATED AND CAUSED THE FIRE. MY WIFE WAS QUITE UPSET AT THE THOUGHT OUR LITTLE GIRL COULD OF BURNED IN THE CAR.
I HAVE A SUBARU BECAUSE I LIVE OFF THE PAVED ROAD AND IT IS AN OFF-ROAD CAR. TWO PROBLEMS: 1) IF DRIVING IN SNOW, SNOW PACKS INTO THE WHEEL WELL AND PREVENTS FRONT WHEELS TURNING PROPERLY. I CARRY A WEEDOUT, OTHER PEOPLE I HAVE TALKED TO CARRY ICE PICKS AND TROWELS FOR GETTING THE SNOW OUT. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME SINCE DEC 2010, WHENEVER DRIVING IN WET SNOW. I HEARD IT DISCUSSED ON CAR TALK, SO I KNOW IT IS A COMMON COMPLAINT. 2) MANUAL TRANSMISSION LINKAGE IS NOW EXPOSED ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE 2011. THE CAR GETS STUCK IN ONE GEAR AND WILL NOT SHIFT. HAPPENED IN 2ND AND 4TH. I GOT IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY REMOVED STICKS AND GRAVEL FROM THE LINKAGE. THEY SAID THEY HAD MANY 2011 MANUAL TRANSMISSION SUBIES IN THAT WEEK WITH STICKS AND GRAVEL IN THE LINKAGE DUE TO THE BAD WEATHER. I COULD NOT GO UP HILLS OR START FROM A STOP WHEN IT WAS STUCK IN 4TH. I COULD NOT DRIVE OVER 20MPH WHEN STUCK IN 2ND. I COULD NOT REVERSE EITHER WAY. THIS IS NOT SAFE, ESPECIALLY WHEN DRIVING IN SNOW AND TRAFFIC IN THE MOUNTAINS. I ASKED THE DEALER IF THEY COULD PUT ON SOMETHING TO COVER AND PROTECT THE LINKAGE AND THEY SAID NO, EVER SINCE SUBARU WENT TO 6 FORWARD GEARS THE LINKAGE IS EXPOSED AND THEY CANNOT ADD ANYTHING TO COVER IT. I THINK THE 6 FORWARD GEAR MANUAL TRANSMISSION OUTBACKS SHOULD BE RECALLED, AND THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO 5 GEARS FORWARD AND PROPERLY COVER UP THE LINKAGE. *TR
2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO VEHICLE SHAKING WHILE DRIVING DUE TO SNOW AND ICE BUILD-UP IN THE TIRES.*TGW THE DEALER WASHED THE UNDERSIDE OF THE CAR IN HOT WATER, TO MELT THE ICE WHICH RESOLVED THE PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE WHEELS WERE DEFECTIVE. THE WHEELS ACCUMULATED SNOW AND CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO VIBRATE OUT OF CONTROL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, BUT THE DEALER COULD NOT REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS AN ENGINEERING DEFECT THAT COULD NOT BE CORRECTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 24,000. THE VIN INFORMATION WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
ALOT OF BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL LOW BRAKE TOOK ALOT OF DISTANCE TO SLOW DOWN WASN'T ABLE TO STOP THE CAR AT 35 MPH HIT OTHER CAR. HAD CAR LOOK AT MANY TIMES STILL THOMAS SUBARU DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING WAS WRONG WITH CAR FROM DAY ONE I TOLD THEM MY BRAKES WEREN'T RIGHT IT TAKES ALOT OF DISTANCE ( PEDAL ) WHICH INCREASE AMOUNT OF TIME NEEDED TO SLOW AND STOP THE CAR.. I FEEL THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER IS NOT WORKING RIGHT STILL THOMAS SUBARU WILL NOT FIX THE CAR UNTIL AN RECALL. I ALSO THINK RECALL NO. 11V562000 WHICH IS ONLY FOR 2012 CARS MIGHT ALSO NEEDS ADDED FOR 2011 CARS. I NOW HAVE 31,000 AND STILL HAVE BAD BRAKES. I NEED HELP SUBARU WILL NOT HELP. *KB
PRETTY MUCH SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE THE ANTI-SKID LIGHTS, CRUISE CONTROL, PARKING BRAKE & CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS WILL FLASH AND WILL NOT GO OFF. I WAS TOLD TO MAKE SURE THE GAS CAP WAS TIGHT AND WAS ALSO TOLD TO CHECK THE BATTERY. ONCE WHEN IT WAS ON I TRIED TO PRESS THE PARKING BRAKE TO RELEASE AND COULD NOT GET IT OFF AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WAS NEARLY REAR ENDED. IT WILL RANDOMLY COME ON AND SOMETIMES STAY ON FOR WEEKS THEN GO OFF AND STAY OFF FOR A FEW DAYS. IT COMES ON WHEN CAR IS STARTED AND DOES NOT USUALLY GO OFF.

I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER BY THE POLICE ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS DUE TO THIS DEFECT. POOR ACCESS FOR HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENT IS ANOTHER SAFETY ISSUE THAT COMPOUNDS THIS PROBLEM. I'VE ALWAYS KEPT A REPLACEMENT HEADLIGHT IN MY PREVIOUS CARS FOR SUCH THE RARE OCCASION THAT A BULB BURNED OUT I COULD EASILY PULL OVER AND IN 2-3 MINUTES BE BACK ON THE ROAD WITH FUNCTIONING LIGHTS. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE THAT REQUIRED LAYING ON THE GROUND, HAVING TO REMOVE THE INNER FENDER AND LIKELY IF YOU AREN'T A PETITE 5 FOOT TALL INDIVIDUAL SUCH AS MYSELF YOU MAY ALSO HAVE TO REMOVE THE TIRE TO ACCESS A HEADLIGHT. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND THE DEALERSHIP TELLING ME THERE ARE NO SERVICE BULLETINS PERTAINING TO SUCH A PROBLEM. ALL THEY(SUBARU DEALER) CAN DO IS GIVE ME A NEW BULB AND THAT I AM NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY FOR A BULB IF ANYONE OTHER THAN THEY (SUBARU DEALER)INSTALLS THE BULBS. RIDICULOUS! STEERING WHEEL SHAKES FROM THE LEFT TO THE RIGHT AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. IT HAPPENS WHEN STEERING AWAY FROM CENTER POSITION. IT ALSO PULLS IN A TURN TO THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION BEING STEERED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKES FAILED AT A VERY LOW SPEED IN A PARKING SPACE. WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED FORWARD ABOUT 20 FEET, PUSHING DOWN A METAL FENCE BEFORE STOPPING. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THE CONTACT FELT THAT THE FAILURE WAS RELATED TO THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 11V562000( SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: PEDALS AND LINKAGES). THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 6,815. UPDATED 02/28/12 *BF UPDATED 05/03/12

WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH IN A PARKING LOT, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED AND THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE OVER A PARKING BARRIER. THE VEHICLE THEN CRASHED INTO A FENCE AND TRAVELED INTO SEVERAL BUSHES COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THERE WAS NO PERSONAL INJURY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER FOR REPAIRS. THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED MODERATE DAMAGES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,000.
I HAVE REPLACED SIX HEADLIGHT BULBS SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN JULY 2011. I DON'T EVEN DRIVE THAT MUCH AFTER DARK. I DON'T USE THE AUTO HEADLIGHT FEATURE EITHER. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS OPERATING AS INTENDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO HOLD THE VEHICLE FOR A FEW WEEKS BECAUSE THE NECESSARY PARTS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED FRUSTRATION BECAUSE THE RECALL NOTICE INFORMED HER THAT SHE WOULD HAVE HER VEHICLE BACK ON THE SAME DAY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A RESPONSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,483.
THERE IS AN INTERFERENCE WITH THE CAR AUDIO SYSTEM. THERE IS AN 'AM' TYPE BUZZING SOUND THAT COMES THRU THE SPEAKERS AT RANDOM TIMES. SOMETIMES IT IS VERY LOW IN VOLUME AND IS SPORADIC. EARLIER THIS MONTH WHILE DRIVING OUT OF TOWN FOR A 3 HOUR DRIVE, THE BUZZING WAS VERY LOUD AND CONTINUED WHETHER THE RADIO WAS ON AM, FM, CD, SATELLITE AND EVEN CONTINUED WHEN WE TURNED THE RADIO OFF. THIS LOUD BUZZING SOUND WENT ON FOR OVER 1/2 HOUR AND WAS EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING. REPORTED TO MY SUBARU DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES NOW WITH NO RESOLUTION. I AM SURE THERE IS SOMETHING THAT IS NOT RIGHT WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I EXPECT THE DEALERSHIP TO FIND IT AND FIX IT. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,000.
OVER THE SPAN OF 4 YEARS OWNING MY SUBARU OUTBACK, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE SAME HEADLIGHT TWICE, AS WELL AS A PARKING LIGHT AND A TAIL LIGHT. THE HEADLIGHTS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO REACH UNLESS YOU ARE A MECHANIC. MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE WITH SUBARU OUTBACK. I WOULD LIKE SUBARU TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND FIX THIS COSTLY AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS PROBLEM. *TR

DURING THE 2 YEARS SINCE I PURCHASED MY 2011 OUTBACK 2.5I (CVT), THERE HAVE BEEN ABOUT 15 OCCASIONS WHERE I WAS GOING DOWNHILL, USING ENGINE BRAKING, WITH MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR, CRUISE CONTROL NOT ENGAGED, BUT GAS WAS FED TO THE ENGINE, RESULTING IN SPEEDS OF 45 TO 50 MPH (4500 RPM) IN 2ND GEAR. ONE INDICATOR THAT GAS IS BEING FED TO THE ENGINE IS THE FUEL ECONOMY GAUGE SHOWS POOR GAS MILEAGE. THIS DEFINITELY DOES NOT FEEL LIKE ENGINE BRAKING WHEN THE ENGINE IS SCREAMING AS YOU ARE SPEEDING DOWNHILL. USUALLY WHEN I DRIVE THE SAME STRETCH OF ROAD USING ENGINE BRAKING MY SPEED IS 30 TO 35 MPH IN 2ND GEAR AND THE FUEL ECONOMY GAUGE SHOWS NO FUEL IS BEING CONSUMED. SUBARU REFUSES TO COMMENT ON THIS PROBLEM SINCE I CANNOT REPRODUCE IT FOR THEM. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT THE SIMILAR BUT LESS SEVERE, REPEATABLE BEHAVIOR, OF CYCLING BETWEEN ACCELERATING TO OVER 2000 RPM AND DECELERATING TO ABOUT 1200 RPM. HE SAID THIS IS DONE TO MEET EMISSION STANDARDS. *TR
ON MANUAL AIR CONDITIONING MODELS WITH FULL MAXIMUM SETTINGS THE SYSTEM OPERATES TO FULL CAPACITY, 39-41 DEGREES F.; HOWEVER, AFTER 10 MINUTES OF OPERATION WITHOUT MAXIMUM SETTING CHANGED THE OUTPUT TEMPERATURE IS REDUCED TO 50-53 DEGREES F. DEALER SERVICED, INDICATED THAT THIS IS NORMAL OPERATION FOR THIS MAKE/MODEL. THE INTERNAL CABIN TEMPERATURE AFTER ONE HOUR OF OPERATION WILL ONLY ACHIEVE 82 F. WHEN OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS 92-94 DEGREE F. WITH MAXIMUM SETTING; AS WELL AS, INTERNAL AIR CIRCULATION. *TR
THERE SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG ACTIVATION SENSOR. MY WIFE, WHO WEIGHS APPROX. 125 LBS, OFTEN SITS IN THAT SEAT. THE AIR BAG SENSOR LIGHT MIGHT GO ON, OR IT MIGHT NOT. SOMETIMES SHE CAN SHIFT HER WEIGHT AND HAVE IT COME ON. OTHER TIMES IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT SHE DOES, IT WILL NOT GO ON. WE CAN BE RIDING ALONG WITH THE AIR BAG LIGHT ON AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, FOR NO REASON, IT WILL GO OFF. THEN, INEXPLICABLY, IT MIGHT, OR MIGHT NOT, COME BACK ON. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A LOCAL SUBARU DEALER WHO INFORMED ME THAT THIS IS THE WAY THE AIR BAG SYSTEM IS MADE AND THAT THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. THEY SAID THAT IT IS AGAINST FEDERAL LAW FOR THEM TO MAKE ANY ADJUSTMENTS AND THAT I SHOULD JUST MAKE SURE MY WIFE WEARS HER SEAT BELT WHEN WE'RE DRIVING. THIS IS A MAJOR IRRITANT, SINCE NEITHER OF US CAN BE SURE IF THE PASSENGER AIR BAG WILL ACTUALLY DEPLOY SHOULD WE BE IN AN ACCIDENT. IT SEEMS LIKE SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS, ESPECIALLY NOW THAT I'VE SEARCHED THIS SITE AND FOUND THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE TO EXPERIENCE THIS PROBLEM WITH THE PASSENGER AIR BAG SENSOR. THE SENSOR TURNS OFF INTERMITTENTLY WHEN MY WIFE SITS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT (5 FT, 4 INCHES, 110 LBS). IT WILL ALSO TURN OFF WHEN SHE SHIFTS HER SITTING POSITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY WHEN DRIVING AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING RACK ASSEMBLY, GEAR BOX ASSEMBLY AND POWER STEERING FLUID WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT FURTHER REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,710. WE RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. WE BOUGHT IT DUE TO HIGH SAFETY RATINGS AND OTHER FEATURES. THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHILE MY WIFE (WHO IS 115 LBS) SITS IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, THE FRONT AIRBAG SENSOR SWITCHES THE AIRBAG ON AND OFF RANDOMLY. WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND HAD IT INSPECTED. THEIR FINDINGS WERE THAT THE CAR IS WORKING AS DESIGNED. THE AIRBAG IS TURNING OFF WHEN HER WEIGHT IS NOT IN AN EXACT SPOT. I LOOKED UP THE PROBLEM ONLINE AND HAD MULTIPLE HITS FOR COMPLAINTS FROM OWNERS OF THE SAME CAR (AND THE 2010 MODEL). WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO MAKE SURE MY WIFE SITS UP STRAIGHT WITH HER LEGS EXTENDED AND THE SEAT FULLY UPRIGHT AND BACK TO HELP THE AIRBAG SENSOR GET A MORE ACCURATE READING. OBVIOUSLY IT IS NOT REASONABLE TO EXPECT A PERSON TO SIT UNMOVING FOR AN EXTENDED LENGTH IN A CAR. ALSO, IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION, HER WEIGHT WOULD NATURALLY SHIFT AND THUS THE AIRBAG MAY NOT DEPLOY. TO ME, THIS NEGATES THE SAFETY RATING FOR THE FRONT PASSENGER AND DISCRIMINATES AGAINST SMALLER ADULTS WHO RIDE IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. MANY OF THE COMPLAINTS I READ HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH ADULTS UP TO 140 LBS, AND THE DEALERSHIP REPLICATED THE PROBLEM WITH A MAN WEIGHING 125 LBS. *TT

2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. CONSUMER STATES VEHICLE ROLLED DOWN THE STREET WITHOUT THE KEY IN IGNITION AND ENGINE OFF *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE FINALLY CAME TO REST IN HIS NEIGHBOR'S YARD. THE CONSUMER THEN NOTICED THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN DRIVE. THE CONSUMER STATED ACCORDING TO THE MANUAL, THE KEY WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO COME OUT OF THE IGNITION, UNLESS THE GEAR SHIFT WAS IN PARK AND THE ENGINE WAS OFF. THE CONSUMER STATED ON AUGUST 6, 2011, WHEN HE RETURNED TO HIS VEHICLE, HE ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. THE CONSUMER CONTACTED SUBARU. THE SUBARU EMPLOYEE STATED THERE MAY HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM THE KEY OR THE SECURITY SYSTEM. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER, THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE BATTERY HAD BEEN REPLACED AND THE VEHICLE WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. ABOUT TWO MONTHS LATER, THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED A SIMILAR PROBLEM, BUT AFTER THREE ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE STARTED. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE HEADLIGHTS WOULD NOT GO OUT, UNLESS THE KEY WAS REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION.
EVEN AFTER ALL THE SOA (SUBARU OF AMERICA) "FIXES" / SERVICE BULLETINS I STILL HAVE A VIBRATION ISSUES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, FEEL IT IN THE SEAT AND IN STEERING WHEEL. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL SUBARU'S OVER THE YEARS AND ALWAYS LOVED THE HEADLIGHTS. UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE OWNED THIS ONE LESS THAN A MONTH AND I ALMOST HAD AN ACCIDENT DRIVING AT NIGHT ON THE COUNTRY ROADS IN CT. THE NIGHT TIME DRIVING LIGHTS ONLY ILLUMINATE TO A VERY LOW HEIGHT (10 FEET MAYBE?) AND HAVE A CUT OFF LINE WHICH APPEARS TO BOUNCE UP AND DOWN ON COUNTRY ROADS, MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE ROAD OR ANYTHING IN THE DISTANCE. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THEM ADJUST OR REPLACE THE HEADLIGHT BULB THEY SAID THAT IS HOW IT WAS MANUFACTURED AND THERE WAS NO ADJUSTMENT NEEDED. THEY SAID TO DRIVE WITH THE HIGH BEAMS ON IT WILL HELP. AFTER CHANGING OUT THE 5TH ONE (3 LEFT HEADLAMPS & 2 RIGHT HEADLAMPS) I PHONED THE DEALER TO SEE IF THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL, TSB OR IF OTHER OWNERS OF THIS OUTBACK HAD THE SAME TROUBLE. I WAS TOLD THEY COULD FIX THE PROBLEM AT MY COST. I WAS TOLD THEY KNEW OF A PROBLEM HOWEVER THERE WAS NO TSB ISSUED AND NO RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. JUST YESTERDAY (26-OCT-2014) I HAVE DISCOVERED THE 3RD HEADLAMP ON THE RIGHT SIDE IS OUT AGAIN (RIGHT ON "SCHEDULE"). I DON'T REMEMBER HOW MANY LOW BEAM VS. PASSENGER AIRBAG LIGHT GOES ON AND OFF RANDOMLY WHEN I AM SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. I AM 5'3 110LBS. THE SENSORS WERE RECALIBRATED WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME. THE PROBLEM CONTINUED. EVEN IF YOU SIT IN ONE SPOT AND NOT MOVE THE SENSOR WILL TURN ON AND OFF RANDOMLY. THE DEALERSHIP STILL DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM. VEHICLE VIBRATION - AFTER ABOUT 8K MILES A VIBRATION STARTED IN THE SEAT AND STEERING. TIRES WERE REBALANCED USING A ROAD FORCE BALANCING MACHINE. THEN THE VIBRATION WOULD COME AND GO EVEN AT SET SPEEDS. BUT WOULD GET WORSE GOING AROUND TURNS AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. DEALERSHIP DID A "FIX" WHICH DIDN'T CHANGE ANYTHING. NO MATTER THE LOAD IN THE CAR 5 PEOPLE IN THE CAR OR EMPTY VIBRATION COMES AND GO. THEY SAY THE ISSUE WAS FIXED IN 2012 MODELS HAD A LOANER WHILE CAR WAS IN FOR THE 2 DAY FIX. SAME VIBRATION ISSUE AS I HAD. THE ONLY GOOD THING ABOUT THIS FIX. MY REAR TIRES ARE WEARING BETTER THEN THEY WERE BEFORE IT. THE OUTSIDE OF MY TIRES WERE WEARING FUNNY EVEN WHEN THE ALIGNMENT WAS WITHIN SPEC. *KB
I TURNED RIGHT INTO A DRIVEWAY WITH A STEEP UPWARD INCLINE AND HAD TO STOP MY CAR BRIEFLY TO SPEAK TO A PERSON HELPING WITH PARKING FOR AN EVENT. MY CAR HAS A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, SO I ENGAGED THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE TO HOLD THE CAR SO I COULD GET MOVING AGAIN WITHOUT ROLLING BACKWARDS. HOWEVER, THE PARKING BRAKE ON MY CAR AUTOMATICALLY DISENGAGES AS SOON AS THE GAS PEDAL IS DEPRESSED (OR EVEN, ACTUALLY, TOUCHED AT ALL). BECAUSE OF THE VERY STEEP INCLINE, BY THE TIME I HAD ENOUGH REVS TO ENGAGE THE CLUTCH, MY CAR HAD ROLLED BACK INTO THE STREET BEHIND ME. FORTUNATELY NO VEHICLE WAS PASSING AT THE TIME, THOUGH A SERIOUS ACCIDENT COULD HAVE OCCURRED. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE ELECTRONIC PARKING BRAKE NEEDS TO BE MANUALLY DISENGAGED IF THE DRIVER SEATBELT IS UNFASTENED, PRESUMABLY AS A REMINDER TO FASTEN THE SEATBELT. IN THE FUTURE IN A SIMILAR DRIVING SITUATION I WOULD BE TEMPTED TO UNFASTEN MY SEATBELT BEFORE ATTEMPTING THE STEEP HILL START, WHICH WOULD BE THE LESS DANGEROUS OF TWO DANGEROUS OPTIONS. I EMAILED SUBARU TO POINT OUT THE PROBLEM AND ASK WHETHER IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO MODIFY THESE VEHICLES SUCH THAT THE PARKING BRAKE IS ALWAYS CONTROLLABLE BY THE DRIVER. MY CONCERN WAS DISMISSED, SEEMINGLY WITHOUT MUCH CONSIDERATION. NO PATTERN COULD BE IDENTIFIED FOR THE INDICATION ALTHOUGH WE TRIED EVERY PERTURBATION OF SITTING, FASTENING SEAT BELT, CLOSING DOOR, STARTING ENGINE, ETC. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. THE PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR(S) WAS REPLACED AS DEFECTIVE, NOW THE INDICATOR NEVER INDICATES 'ON', ALWAYS 'OFF' REGARDLESS OF ACTIONS AS ABOVE. THE VEHICLE WAS RETURNED A SECOND TIME, THIS TIME IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SENSOR(S) WERE BEING INHIBITED BECAUSE OF SEAT COVERS DISTRIBUTING THE WEIGHT IN SUCH A WAY AS TO 'FOOL' THE SENSORS. IT TOOK A 180 LB. PERSON TO ACTIVATE THE SENSOR, [A 170 LB. PERSON DID NOT] WITH THE SEAT COVERS ON, THE SENSORS APPEARED TO OPERATE CORRECTLY WITHOUT THE SEAT COVERS. THIS RAISES THE QUESTION OF WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION, ARE LARGE BUTTOCKS REQUIRED GIVEN THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE WEIGHT SENSORS IN THE SEAT, HOW ABOUT A SMALL FRAMED 120 LB ADULT. THE ANSWER IS CLEAR, THE PASSENGER AIR BAG SHOULD ALWAYS BE ON UNLESS MANUALLY TURNED OFF BY THE USER. SUBARU MUST PROVIDE A PROGRAMMING OPTION TO THE OWNER TO DEFAULT THE AIRBAG STATUS TO ALWAYS 'ON'. MY TOYOTA AND HONDA BOTH PROVIDES A KEY LOCK OPTION TO DISABLE THE UNIT, DEFAULT IS, AND SHOULD BE REQUIRED, TO BE 'ON'. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND SUBARU IS OPENING THEMSELVES TO CLASS ACTIONS, AND HEAVEN FORBID THE FIRST ACCIDENT WHEN THE UNIT FAILS TO DEPLOY BECAUSE IT WAS NOT ARMED BECAUSE OF QUIRKY WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION REQUIREMENTS. I BELIEVE THAT A PREVENTIVE RECALL SHOULD BE ORDERED IF SUBARU DOES NOT UNILATERALLY PROVIDE AN ALWAYS 'ON' DEFAULT OPTION FOR THE VEHICLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 SUBARU OUTBACK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS DID NOT PROVIDE PROPER ILLUMINATION OF THE ROADWAY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WERE TWO DIFFERENT LIGHT SHADES WHERE THE TOP HALF OF THE LIGHT WAS DARK AND THE LOWER PART OF THE LIGHT WAS BRIGHT, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED, BUT DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH REPAIRS TO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 7,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
