THE ISSUE WITH MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY, IS THE DASH BOARD IS STARTING TO MELT. THUS MAKING IT HARD TO SEE WHILE DRIVING. I'M CONCERNED WITH THIS BECAUSE IT CAN BE A SAFETY ISSUE WHILE ON THE ROAD. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, A CLANKING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE FRONT DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. UPON INSPECTION, THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT COIL SPRING HAD FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,800.
I WAS SLOWING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT. THE WARNING LIGHT CHECK VSC CAME ON. THE BRAKES WERE VERY WEAK AND DID NOT STOP THE CAR. I HAD TO ESCAPE ON TO THE SHOULDER AND HAVE THE CAR SLOW DOWN. *TR
DASHBOARD IS MELTING AND CAUSING EXCESSIVE GLARE ON WINDSHIELD, MAKING VISIBILITY POOR. *TR
UNABLE TO USE BRAKE WITH VSC PROBLEM. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HAVING MAINTENANCE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE, HE WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE MOTOR MOUNTS AND TRANSMISSION WERE FRACTURED. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT BOTH THE ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION MOUNTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 125,000.
DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY, I PULLED MY SUN VISOR DOWN AND IT FLOPPED IN FRONT OF ME. I HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO PULL IT OFF AS IT WOULDN'T STAY IN POSITION, UP OR DOWN. I WROTE TO TOYOTA AND THEY REFUSED TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, BUT THEY OFFERED ME A $750 DISCOUNT ON MY NEXT TOYOTA PURCHASE! UNDER THE CIRCUMSTANCES, I COULD EASILY HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND CONSIDER THE INCIDENT A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THERE ARE MANY SUCH INCIDENTS. IN FACT ONE SITE SHOWED HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS FOR THE VERY SAME THING. *TR
TURN CORNER AND HEAR A BIG "CLUNK" AND LATER FIND A PIECE FALL OFF MY VEHICLE - STOP AND FIND OUT THAT IT IS PART OF THE COIL SPRING. I BRING THE BROKEN OFF PART INTO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND THE "SERVICE SPECIALIST" AT THE CORWIN TOYOTA DEALER SAID - "LET ME GUESS, CAMRY..." I ASKED WHY SHE SAID CAMRY- SHE TOLD ME THAT THEY ONLY HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH CAMRY COIL SPRINGS AND NO OTHER VEHICLES HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE. I ASKED IF THERE WAS ANY WARRANTY OR RECALL ON THE ITEM AND SHE SAID "NO". MY CAR HAS ONLY 77,000 MILES ON IT AND THIS IS ONE THING THAT SHOULD NOT BE BREAKING ON A NEWER CAR. I WOULD UNDERSTAND IT IF I WERE DRIVING THROUGH FIELDS / CRAP ROADS BUT I AM NOT. THE FACT THAT THE LADY AT THE TOYOTA DEALER SAID THAT CAMRY VEHICLES ARE THE ONLY VEHICLES THAT THEY EXPERIENCE THIS ISSUES WITH IS ALSO A "RED FLAG" TO ME! IS IT ANOTHER THING THAT TOYOTA IS AWARE OF (THIS DEALERSHIP IS AWARE BY THE SOUNDS OF IT) AND IS IGNORING THE PROBLEM OR IS IT AN ISSUE THAT HAS YET TO BE BROUGHT UP TO CORPORATE MECHANICS/SAFETY SPECIALISTS... *JS
I HAVE REALLY GOOD DRIVING RECORD WITH NO ACCIDENT & NOT EVEN 1 TICKET IN THE PAST 20 YEARS BEFORE THESE 2 ACCIDENTS & WE'VE HAD THE CAR FOR 6.5 YEARS. 1ST ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON 4/11/14 AT 9:14AM. TRAFFIC WAS BAD DURING THE MORNING RUSH HOUR SO ALL CARS WERE TRAVELLING SLOWLY. I WAS ON FWY 5 HEADING S TO THE FWY 55 S RAMP IN CA. MATRIX (1ST CAR) SUDDENLY STOPPED WHILE ALL OTHER CARS WERE STILL MOVING FORWARD. EQUINOX (2ND CAR) STOPPED & I IMMEDIATELY SLAMMED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. HOWEVER, I DIDN'T FEEL THE CAR STOPPING AT ALL & I THOUGHT I HEARD THE ENGINE ROARING, BUT THEN THOUGHT IT WAS ONLY MY ILLUSION. SINCE THE DAMAGE WAS ONLY BUMPERS & HEADLIGHTS WE JUST LET INSURANCE HANDLED IT & MOVED ON WITH OUR LIFE. HOWEVER, I DID START DRIVING EXTRA CAREFULLY AFTER THIS INCIDENT. 2ND ACCIDENT HAPPENED ON 6/23/14 AT 8:40AM. AGAIN, TRAFFIC WAS BAD DURING MORNING RUSH HOUR. I WAS ON JAMBOREE IN IRVINE, CA HEADING TOWARDS NEWPORT BEACH. I WAS WAITING FOR THE RED LIGHT ON JAMBOREE AT THE 405 N BOUND EXIT INTERSECTION IN THE 2ND LANE FROM LEFT (TOTAL 4 LANES). THERE WERE ALREADY 2 ACCIDENTS AROUND THERE & LIGHT HAD JUST TURNED GREEN. ALL CARS WERE MOVING VERY SLOWLY DUE TO ACCIDENTS NEARBY. YUKON HAD ALREADY PULLED INTO THE INTERSECTION & SUDDENLY STOPPED. I WAS STILL BEHIND THE LINE WITH SOME DISTANCE & SLAMMED ON BRAKE IMMEDIATELY BUT DIDN'T FEEL THE CAR STOPPING UNTIL HITTING YUKON. I HEARD BRAKE SOUND AND ENGINE ROARING AGAIN WHILE MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. THIS TIME THE ROARING SOUND WAS CLEAR COMPARE TO APRIL ACCIDENT. IT WAS AT OVER-PATH OF FWY 405 SO THE ROAD WAS A BIT GOING UPHILL. HYBRID DOES NOT START FAST AT ALL SO I AM SURE MY SPEED WAS VERY SLOW. CAR IS DETERMINED AS TOTALED BECAUSE ENGINE WENT UNDER YUKON'S SPARE TIRE HANGING IN THE BACK. TOYOTA SAID HYBRID HAS A BLACK BOX THAT RECORDS DATA. WANT TO GET ACCESS TO THE ENCRYPTED DATA IF POSSIBLE. *JS
THIS IS THE SECOND OR THIRD TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. THIS AM I STARTED THE CAR, PUT IN REVERSE, STARTED TO BACK OUT AND AS I STRAIGHTENED THE CAR IT LURCHED FORWARD BEFORE I PUT IN FORWARD GEAR..... I'VE HAD THE CAR "JUMP IN TRAFFIC A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT SO QUICKLY I DIDN'T THINK ANYTHING OF IT. NOW I'M SEEING A PATTERN THAT IS WORSENING. I BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2011 FROM CARMAX IN TN. THE CAR ORIGINATED IN IL. WITH 16,000 MILES. I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT TURNING THE ENGINE ON AND IT BEING LOUDER THAN NORMAL. BY THE TIME I DRIVE TO THE BEAMANS OR CARMAX FOR SERVICE NO ONE CAN HEAR IT. SO NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. I WOULD LIKE SOMEONE QUALIFIED TO LOOK AT AND KNOW IF THIS IS SAFE TO DRIVE TO THE DEALERSHIP. *TR
THE DASHBOARD IS MELTING AND IS SHINY AND STICKY. I CAN'T EVEN WIPE IT DOWN WITHOUT MAKING A BIGGER MESS. I NEED THIS FIXED.
FRONT DASHBOARD HAS BECOME STICKY AND SHINY. THE GLARE IS NOW WORSE THAN TYPICAL AND MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. *TR
I OWN A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY AND WAS TOLD TODAY THAT THIS MAKE MODEL AND YEAR CARS HAVE BEEN HAVING A EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEM WITH THE ENGINE. THE DEALERSHIP DOES NOT KNOW WHERE THE OIL IS GOING AND THAT I SHOULD WATCH THIS TO MAKE SURE I DO NOT RUN OUT OF OIL AND BURN UP THE ENGINE. I HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT THIS SINCE I TRAVEL ALMOST 100 MILES A DAY AND BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR SAFETY AND LONGEVITY NO MATTER HOW MANY MILES ARE INVOLVED. MY CHILDREN AND I COULD BE LEFT STRANDED WHICH IS A CONCERN IN THIS DAY AND AGE. FROM WHAT I AM TOLD THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS ENGINE WHY IS THERE NO RECALL? THE DRIVER SIDE VISOR WOULD NOT STAY UP AND IT STARTED TO HANG DOWN. NOW THE VISOR IS TOTALLY LOOSE AND OBSTRUCTING MY VISION WHILE DRIVING. THE DEALER SAYS THAT THERE IS NO RECALL - BUT THE INTERNET AND NHTSA HAS MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. TOYOTA SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS. *TR
I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY AND NOTICED SEVERAL MONTHS AGO THAT THE DASHBOARD STARTED TO HAVE A STICKY FEELING. I LIVE IN WEST PALM BEACH, FL AND WITHIN THE LAST FEW DAYS I NOTICED AN ARTICLE ON THE CHANNEL 5 NEWS STATION THAT HAD A REPORT ON THE MELTING DASH IN THESE CARS. AFTER READING SEVERAL COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER CAMRY DRIVERS, I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A "RECALL" ISSUE WITH TOYOTA AND THEY NEED TO FIX IT! I'VE SEEN THE ESTIMATES OTHER DRIVERS HAVE RECEIVED AFTER SPEAKING WITH TOYOTA AND THEY SEEM TO CHARGE AROUND $2500 FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THE DASHBOARD; AND IT'S NOT EVEN THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DRIVER! THIS IS A GROWING PROBLEM AND TOYOTA NEEDS TO START TAKING CARE OF IT NOW! I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA AGAIN, REGARDLESS OF THE HYPE OF THEIR EVERLASTING PRODUCTS. *JS
THE DASH HAS BEGUN MELTING IN THE SUN AND HAS BECOME STICKY AND AT TIMES IT MELTS AND RUNS DOWNWARDS. NOTHING WILL CLEAN IT AND EVERYTHING STICKS TO IT AND WITH THE MELTING IT HAS A SHINY GLOSS THAT AT TIMES WITH THE SUN COMING IN HAS A TERRIBLE GLARE. I AM AFRAID IF THIS CONTINUES THE AIR BAG ON THE PASSENGER SIDE COULD DEPLOY AND CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. *TR
LOSS OF CONTROL OR STABILITY DUE TO MULTIPLE PROBLEMS CREATED BY FAULTY AND WEAK INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE ELECTRIC ASSIST RACK AND PINION. THE FAULTY ELECTRIC ASSIST RACK AND PINION CAUSES UNDETECTABLE MICRO-VIBRATIONS THAT LEADS TO CHAFFING OF THE FRONT TIRES, IT ALSO LEADS TO UNEVEN TREAD WEAR TO THE INSIDE OF THE FRONT TIRES WHICH CAUSES LOSS OF TRACTION AT ALL SPEEDS WITHOUT IMPLICATION OF THE WEAR. THE UNDERLYING PROBLEM DOES NOT COME TO YOUR ATTENTION WITH ANY WARNING OR IMPLICATIONS UNTIL THE INEVITABLE HAPPENS (WHICH COULD BE A FATAL ACCIDENT). WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY OR SUBURBAN STREET THAT ALLOWS SPEEDS IN ACCESS OF 45+MPH IS WHERE THE PROBLEM IS AT THE HIGHEST RISK CAUSING A DRIVER TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DUE TO SWAYING OF THE TIRES BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY ELECTRIC ASSIST RACK AND PINION, CHAFFING OF THE TIRES, AND UNEVEN WEAR OF THE TIRES. THIS IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS FAULT THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY. IF YOU ARE AWARE OF HOW DANGEROUS IT CAN BE TO DRIVE A VEHICLE WITHOUT BRAKE PADS, THIS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF DRIVING A VEHICLE WITHOUT FINGERS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE OIL LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER CHECKING THE OIL, IT READ EMPTY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN VERIFIED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS CONSUMING OIL EXCESSIVELY BUT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHAT WAS CAUSING THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DECLINE TO PROVIDE AN ALTERNATIVE REMEDY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,566 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,005.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED INSIDE A GARAGE WHEN IT SUDDENLY CAUGHT ON FIRE, COMPLETELY DESTROYING BOTH THE VEHICLE AND THE RESIDENCE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CALLED TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT TWO WITNESSES SAW FLAMES COMING FROM THE SEATING AREA OF THE VEHICLE DURING THE INCIDENT. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED SMOKE INHALATION DURING THE INCIDENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
FIRST INCIDENT: WHEN IN REVERSE, ABOUT 5 WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON (ABS LIGHT, CAUTION LIGHT AND RED TRIANGLE AND OTHERS) AND BRAKING REQUIRED HARD DEPRESSING. I TOOK TO TOYOTA DEALER; THEY RESET THE WARNING LIGHTS AND SAID CAR WAS OK. WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM DEALER, MULTIPLE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AGAIN AND IT TOOK FULL PRESSURE TO BRAKE, WHILE CAR ALSO SEEMED DIFFICULT TO CONTROL. I WOULD CLASSIFY IT AS CATASTROPHIC FAILURE, AND WAS FORTUNATE TO BE DRIVING SLOW IN THE CITY. I RETURNED TO DEALER. THEY DIAGNOSED AS C1247 ERROR AND RECOMMENDED REPLACING SKID CONTROL COMPUTER FOR $1,800. WHEN I COMPLAINED THAT THIS SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A HYBRID WARRANTY, REGIONAL TOYOTA OFFERED $500 "TOWARDS REPAIR AS GOODWILL ASSISTANCE." *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DASHBOARD HAD PREMATURELY DETERIORATED CAUSING EXTENSIVE CRACKS AND A STICKY RESIDUE DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A MANUFACTURER RECALL FOR THE DASHBOARD AND THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE FOR OVER TWO YEARS. THE CONTACT NOTIFIED TWO DEALERS OF THE CONCERN AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DETERMINE WHEN THE MANUFACTURER WOULD BE ABLE TO SUPPLY A PERMANENT REMEDY FOR THE CONDITION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO HAVE POOR VISIBILITY DUE TO THE GLARE ON THE DASHBOARD. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHEN PULLING INTO A GRAVEL PARKING SPACE AT LESS THAN 5MPH. CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FULL THROTTLE, JUMPED A CONCRETE PARKING STOP, BECAME PARTIALLY AIRBORNE ON THE RIGHT SIDE , COMING DOWN IN A DEPRESSION AFTER 25 FT. BRAKE WAS FULLY DEPRESSED THROUGH EVENT. VISUAL INSPECTION AND MANUAL CHECK AFTER INCIDENT SHOWED NOTHING IMPEDING EITHER GAS PEDAL OR BRAKE. MATS FIRMLY ATTACHED. WE HAVE PHOTOS OF THE ACCELERATION TRACKS AND THE DITCH WHERE IT LANDED. DAMAGE TO FASCIA, BUMPER, AIR DAM. ALIGNMENT, POSSIBLE TIRE DAMAGE. EST. $800 - $1200. OUR COMPLAINT IS CAR SAT AT DEALER FOR 2 MONTHS DEEMED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE OUTCOME WAS THAT NOTHING WAS RECORDED ON THE BLACK BOX AND VEHICLE PASSED INSPECTIONS ON A LIFT. THEREFORE EVEN THOUGH THIS WAS AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE TOYOTA WILL DO NOTHING. RECOMMENDATION FROM BOTH CONSUMER REPORTS AND EDMUNDS IS A BRAKE OVERRIDE SHOULD BE INSTALLED. WHEN THIS WAS MENTIONED THEY SAID NO THE CAR DOESN'T NEED IT. ONE OF OUR COMPLAINTS IS TOYOTA MOTOR SALES U.S.A. TOOK 2 MONTHS TO RESOLVE THIS. THEY DIDN'T RETURN PHONE CALLS OR NOTIFY THE DEALER OF ANY RESULTS. DEALER STATED TOYOTA WOULDN'T LET THEM WORK ON THE CAR AND IT WAS LISTED UNSAFE TO DRIVE. DURING THIS 2 MONTHS WE HAD TO RENT A CAR OUT OF POCKET (INSURANCE PAID 2 WEEKS). OVER $1000. BOTH MY WIFE AND I FEEL VERY LUCKY THIS INCIDENT DIDN'T HAPPEN ON A BUSY HIGHWAY OR NEXT TO A SOLID WALL. IF IT HAD THERE WAS A GOOD CHANCE WE COULD HAVE BEEN INJURED AND THE DAMAGE MUCH WORSE. DEALING WITH BOTH THE DEALER AND TOYOTA U.S.A. WAS FRUSTRATING AND POINTLESS. WE HAVE PICKED UP THE CAR AND ARE CONSIDERING TRADING IT IN BUT ARE SHOCKED TO FIND IN 2 YEARS IT HAS DEPRECATED BY $8000! THIS HAS BEEN A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE AND A MONETARY LOSS AS WELL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY SOLARA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS INTERMITTENTLY SHORTED OUT. AS THE FAILURE PROGRESSED, THE LIGHTS WOULD INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATE WHILE TRAVELING AND CAUSED A LOSS OF VISIBILITY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
IN MARCH OF THIS YEAR I NOTICED AN AREA ON THE DASHBOARD. THINKING SOMEONE HAD SPILLED SOMETHING, I ATTEMPTED TO WIPE IT AND THE CLOTH LITERALLY STUCK TO THE DASHBOARD. IT WAS GOOEY. OVER THE NEXT FEW MONTHS IT GOT WORSE AND MORE WIDESPREAD TO NOW BE ALL THE DASHBOARD AREA. I AM FINDING OUT THAT THIS ISSUE IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE COMMON. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THE DASHBOARD AND REPLACE THIS DEFECTIVE EQUIPMENT IN THE VEHICLE. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IN THE SHINY STICKY MATERIAL REFLECTS SUNLIGHT BACK INTO THE EYES OF THE DRIVER. ADDITIONALLY, KEEPING THE CAR CLEAN IS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT BECAUSE EVERYTHING STICKS TO IT AND IS IMPOSSIBLE TO REMOVE WITHOUT FURTHER DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN SO BAD THAT THERE ARE SPOTS WHERE THE DARK MATERIAL OF THE DASHBOARD SURFACE HAS COME OFF AND THE SURFACE BENEATH IS NOW SHOWING. I CALLED THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT TOYOTA KNEW ABOUT THE ISSUE IN 2011 BUT I WAS NEVER CONTACTED AS THE OWNER OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED BRAND NEW AND I HAVE BEEN THE ONLY OWNER/DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE. ADDITIONALLY, THE VEHICLE IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY, SO TOYOTA WILL NEVER BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE MANUFACTURING AND CUTTING CORNERS. RECALL - NEED THE MELTING DASH AND RESULTING GLARE FIXED. *TR
WAS IN PARK IN PARKING LOT, SWITCHED TO DRIVE AND IMMEDIATELY THE BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THEN THE "CHECK VSC" MESSAGE CAME UP ON THE COMPUTER. PROCEEDED TO BUSY ROAD AND TURN LEFT, ONLY TO FIND OUT I HAD NO BRAKING POWER; OTHER THAN THE PARKING BRAKE. WITH SOME LUCK AND THE PARKING BRAKE I WAS ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A CONTROLLED STOP. FORTUNATELY IT WAS 5AM ON MY WAY TO WORK AT THE HOSPITAL, IF THERE WAS PEOPLE OR OTHER VEHICLES THERE WOULD BE NO WAY TO STOP THE VEHICLE SAFELY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING, THE "CHECK VSC SYSTEM" WARNING CAME ON, AN IMMEDIATE POWER REDUCTION OCCURRED AND SOME BRAKE PRESSURE LOSS. DEALERSHIP SAID THE SKID CONTROL ECU ($1800) AND ABS ACTUATOR ($2900) WERE BOTH BAD. AFTER REPLACING BOTH, WARNING LIGHTS ARE STILL ON. PROBLEM NOT RESOLVED YET. *TR
THE WARNING LIGHTS WENT ON AND IMMEDIATE THE VEHICLE SHUT DOWN WHILE I WAS TRAVELING A CITY STREET IN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA (DEWEY BLVD). FORTUNATELY THE STREET IS FAIRLY LEVEL AND I WASN'T ON A HILL. I LOSS POWER TO THE BRAKE, STEERING AND EVERYTHING AS EVERYTHING WAS DEAD. I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A CURB PUTTING ALL MY EFFORT TO STOP THE CAR. I TRIED STARTING AND MOVED ABOUT 10 FEET BEFORE EVERYTHING WENT DEAD AGAIN. I DID NOT MOVE IT FURTHER I CALLED FOR A TOW (AAA) AND THE INITIAL DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT THE ALTERNATOR WAS DEAD. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A MECHANIC WHO ALSO SAID THAT THIS ALTERNATOR WAS DEAD AND IT WAS REPLACED. I TOLD HIM WHERE IT HAPPENED AND HE SAID I WAS LUCKY THAT I WASN'T ON THE FREEWAY. *TR
MY CAR WAS PARKED OUTDOORS IN THE RAIN. THE INSIDE OF THE CAR WINDOWS WERE DRIPPING WITH MOISTURE. WHEN I DECIDED TO GO TO FOR A DRIVE, I REACHED BEHIND MY SEAT TO THE REAR FLOOR FOR MY PAPER TOWEL ROLL AND CLOTH TOWELS TO WIPE OFF THE WINDOWS AND THEY WERE SOAKED WITH WATER. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER SHIP TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE FOUR SUNROOF DRAINS HAD NO HOSE CLAMPS ON THEM THE RIGHT REAR HOSE HAD COME LOOSE CAUSING A FLOOD IN MY REAR SEAT AREA. I HAD TO HAVE ALL CARPETS REPLACED AND HOSE CLAMPS ADDED TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER DAMAGE. IT COST $2467.57 TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE BECAUSE TOYOTA DID NOT REQUIRE HOSE CLAMPS ON THE 4 DRAIN HOSES FROM THE SUNROOF. I ASKED TOYOTA IF THEY WERE GOING TO NOTIFY OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM AND THEY INDICATED AN ANSWER OF, NO! I THINK THEY SHOULD BE FORCED TO LET OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS OF THE POTENTIAL PROBLEM. I HAVE ALL OF THE COMMUNICATIONS WITH TOYOTA IF YOU WANT COPIES. THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS INSURANCE RATES ARE SO HIGH. MY INSURANCE PAID FOR ALL EXCEPT $60.52 OF THE TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS. I HAVE AAA INSURANCE. PLEASE RESPOND!!! *TR
ENGINE USES OIL. TOOK CAR INTO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR OIL CONSUMPTION TEST AND THEY SAID THERE WAS NO PROBLEM BUT YET IT CONTINUES TO USE OIL. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL TOYOTA'S AND THIS IS THE WORST ONE AND PROBABLY MY LAST. IT'S NOT ONLY A NUISANCE BUT ALSO COST US EXTRA MONEY FOR THE ADDED OIL.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE 405 FREEWAY NORTH FROM LONG BEACH TO WEST LOS ANGELES, WHEN THE VSC SYSTEM LIGHTS CAME ON. I TOOK THE CAR TO SANTA MONICA TOYOTA, WHERE I HAD ORIGINALLY PURCHASED IT, AND WAS TOLD THAT THE BRAKE ACTUATOR SYSTEM WAS LEAKING AND THE REPAIR COST WAS $3800, NO ONE THERE INFORMED ME THAT THIS PARTICULAR PART WAS BEING INVESTIGATED FOR POSSIBLE DEFECTS. AFTER THE CAR WAS LOOKED AT SANTA MONICA TOYOTA, THE BRAKES STARTED CLUCKING AND GRABBING. AFTER MUCH HEATED DISCUSSION, CORPORATE TOYOTA AGREED TO PAY $1000 TOWARD THE REPAIR WHICH WAS DONE AT MARINA DEL REY TOYOTA. I BELIEVE THAT THE SYSTEM IS DEFECTIVE. NO SYSTEM SHOULD FAIL IN SO MANY CARS OF THE SAME MODEL AND YEAR. TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THE SYSTEM AND COMPENSATE MYSELF AND OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS. *TR
THE SUN VISOR DOES NOT STAY IN PLACE AND THERE IS NO RECALL. TOYOTA WANTS TO CHARGE ME $200 TO FIX A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
BRAKE ACTUATOR HAD GONE OUT, THIS CONTROLLED THE ENTIRE BRAKING SYSTEM. NO ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED BUT THE CAR IS INOPERABLE AND A NEW ACTUATOR IS QUOTED AT $2600. *TR
THE BRAKE ACTUATOR ON THESE CAMRY AND CAMRY HYBRID MODELS IS A COMPLAINT OF THOUSANDS OF THESE MODELS OF TOYOTAS. WHEN TAKEN TO A DEALER, THEY WANT APPROXIMATELY $4000 TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM ($2800 FOR THE PART AND $1200 FOR LABOR) AND AT 3 SEPARATE DEALERSHIPS THE UNDERTONE COMMENT FROM THE SERVICE WRITER IS THAT TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL THESE CARS AND REPLACE THIS PART BUT UNTIL SOMEONE IS KILLED IN THE CAR FROM THE BRAKES FAILING, NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN; IT IS A HUGE SAFETY CONCERN. WHY ISN'T TOYOTA DEMANDED TO MAKE A RECALL ON A PART THAT IS DEFECTIVE IN THOUSANDS OF THE CAMRY AND HYBRID CAMRY MODELS? THERE ARE MASSIVE COMPLAINTS RECORDED VIA COMPUTER AND MAYBE PEOPLE DON'T KNOW WHO TO APPROPRIATELY ADDRESS THIS ISSUE TO. HOPEFULLY NHTSA.GOV WILL TAKE AN HUMAN INTEREST WITH REGARDS TO VEHICLE SAFETY AND DEMAND THAT TOYOTA RECALL THESE CARS AND REPLACE THIS PART AT THEIR COST. WITH SO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS BRAKE ACTUATOR PROBLEM, THERE HAS TO BE A SERIES OF DEFECTIVE PARTS THAT WERE INSTALLED IN THESE CAMRY AND CAMRY HYBRID MODELS. WHEN QUESTIONED ABOUT A DEFECTIVE PART, TOYOTA JUST SHRUGS THEIR SHOULDERS. IT IS FRUSTRATING AND IT IS NOW INVOLVING MY FAMILY AND ESPECIALLY MY CHILDREN AT RISK OF DEATH DEFYING TRAVEL. I REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE OR HELP NHTSA CAN PROVIDE TO MAKE TOYOTA ADMIT GUILT OF A DEFECTIVE BRAKE ACTUATOR. THE DASHBOARD OF OUR 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HAS A RESIDUE ON IT. WE HAVE TRIED CLEANING IT, HOWEVER THE MORE YOU TOUCH THE DASHBOARD, HOLES APPEAR. THE DASH SEEMS TO DISINTEGRATE. THE GLARE ON THE DASHBOARD IS A HAZARD WHILE DRIVING. WE WERE TOLD BY THE DEALERSHIP THAT THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. 2400M AFTER OIL CHANGE, THE ENGINE OIL LEVEL DROPPED BELOW THE LOW POINT OF DIP STICK. THE LOW ENGINE OIL LEVEL IS DANGEROUS. *TR

LOOKED INTO MANUAL TO READ AND SAID TO TAKE CAR IN. DROVE CAR AROUND PARKING LOT TO SEE HOW CAR HANDLED. CAR BRAKED BUT PUMPED ON OWN AFTER BRAKE TAPPED EACH TIME. BRAKING ABILITY AND FLEXIBILITY COMPROMISED. BEING SERVICED NOW. *TR
CHECK VSC SYSTEM WARNING AND BRAKE AND OTHER WARNING LIGHTS LIGHTING UP ON DASHBOARD. DIFFICULTY BRAKING WITH LURCHING FORWARD WHEN AT A COMPLETE STOP. NEEDED TO PUMP ON BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES TO COME TO A COMPLETE STOP, LOSS OF BRAKING ABILITY. *TR
MY BRAKES FAILED THE FIRST TIME ON 1/29/14 ON MY WAY TO WORK. LUCKILY, I WASN'T GOING TOO FAST, WHICH ALLOWED ME TO SAFELY PULL OVER ONTO ONE OF THE SIDE STREETS. MY CAR DISPLAYED THE ERROR MESSAGE: "CHECK VSC SYSTEM." I CALLED AAA, AND ONE OF THEIR TOW TRUCK DRIVERS SUGGESTED THAT RATHER THAN TAKING MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP, I USE A DIFFERENT PLACE (WHICH HE CLAIMED WAS AAA APPROVED; IT WASN'T). NEARLY $500 LATER ($472.94 TO BE EXACT), MY CAR SEEMED FINE FOR ABOUT A MONTH. THEN ON 2/26/14, THIS TIME WHILE DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE, MY BRAKES FAILED AGAIN. I GOT THE SAME MESSAGE AS BEFORE: "CHECK VSC SYSTEM." THIS TIME, I ASKED TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. SUPPOSEDLY, NOBODY AT THE DEALERSHIP WAS AWARE OF A RECALL FOR THIS SYSTEMATIC PROBLEM. HOWEVER, I HAVE SINCE FOUND OUT THAT 59 OTHER COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN REPORTED FOR THIS VERY ISSUE. THAT'S ONLY THROUGH JANUARY; I CAN IMAGINE HOW MANY OTHER TIMES THIS HAPPENED THAT WERE NOT REPORTED. I ATE THE COST (THIS TIME UPWARDS OF $3,800) TO HAVE THE ENTIRE VEHICLE SUSPENSION CONTROL (VSC) UNIT COMPLETELY REPLACED. THIS MORNING, 4/21/14, I TURNED ON MY CAR & WAS GREETED WITH THAT OLD FAMILIAR MESSAGE: "CHECK VSC SYSTEM." I'M AFRAID TO TRY DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK IN THIS CONDITION, AND MEANWHILE I'VE SUNK OVER $4,000 INTO "REPAIRS" THAT DO NOT SEEM TO LAST. I ALWAYS THOUGHT TOYOTAS WERE SUCH GOOD, RELIABLE CARS. HOWEVER, I'M NOT SURE IF I WOULD BUY ANOTHER ONE AT THIS RATE. MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 100K MILES AND I'M EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS HEADACHE. SLOWLY ENTERED RITE AID PARKING LOT AT 5-10 MPH. TURNED RIGHT INTO A PARKING SPOT. LIGHTLY TAPPED THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR WENT FASTER THAN IF YOU WERE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. CAR JUMPED THE CONCRETE BUMPER ONTO THE WALKWAY. HAD TO CUT THE WHEEL ALL THE WAY TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID HITTING THE BRICK WALL OF THE STORE AND DROVE INTO THE PARKING LOT GUARD RAIL. CAR WENT INTO A HIGH SPEED SKID AND WHEN IT CAME OUT OF THE SKID WAS STILL ACCELERATING AT A VERY HIGH SPEED AND HAD TO TURN THE IGNITION OFF FOR IT TO STOP. THERE WERE SKID MARKS AND SMOKE. AIR BAG DID NOT GO OFF. WAITING TO HEAR FROM TOYOTA WITH A DATE TO HAVE THE CAR INSPECTED. WOULD LIKE FOR TOYOTA TO BUY BACK MY CAR WHICH WE HAVE SPENT TOP DOLLAR HAVING TOYOTA MAINTAIN IT FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS, WHICH INCLUDED THE 100,000 MILE SERVICE JUST A WEEK OR TWO BEFORE THE ACCIDENT. I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID AND FOUND THAT THE SUN VISOR WAS ROTATED DOWNWARD AND WOULD NOT GO BACK TO ITS ORIGINAL POSITION. I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN IRVINE, CA AND WAS TOLD THAT THE SUN VISOR ASSEMBLY AND SUN VISOR BRACKET HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON CERTAIN 2007-2011 MODELS AND THAT MY MODEL WAS ON THE LIST. HOWEVER, WHEN I CAME TO PICK UP THE CAR I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED BECAUSE THE CAR VIN SHOWS THAT THE CAR WAS MADE IN JAPAN AND THAT THE EXTENDED WARRANTY IS ONLY APPLICABLE TO CARS FROM THE UNITED STATES. THE SUN VISOR NOT ROTATING BACK TO ITS RIGHT POSITION IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS I CANNOT FULLY SEE AHEAD WHILE DRIVING AND DO NOT HAVE A CLEAR VIEW. IF THERE IS ALREADY A RECALL ON THIS SPECIFIC PART FOR THESE SPECIFIC CARS AND THE PRODUCT IS MADE BY TOYOTA IT SHOULD BE COVERED NO MATTER WHERE THE CAR WAS MADE. I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY WHEN I FELT A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE STEERING AND BREAKING OF MY CAR. AT THE SAME TIME A LOT OF THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON INCLUDING: BRAKE, ABS, VSC WARNING, CHECK ENGINE, TPMS. AFTER I FELT THIS CHANGE, IT WAS VERY HARD TO BRAKE. IT TOOK ME LONGER TO STOP AND I HAD TO USE MORE PHYSICAL FORCE TO DO SO. THIS WAS EXTREMELY SCARY CONSIDERING HOW FAST I WAS GOING AND THE FACT THAT I HAD MY CHILD IN THE CAR WITH ME. I TOOK MY CAR STRAIGHT TO A MECHANIC WHO CLEARED THE CODE. *TR
MY DASHBOARD HAS PRACTICALLY MELTED. IT SHINES AND REFLECTS ONTO THE WINDSHIELD WHILE I'M DRIVING, IMPAIRING MY VISION. WHENEVER I TRY TO WIPE IT, WHATEVER I'M USING STICKS TO IT AND WON'T COME OFF WITHOUT TEARING AND LEAVING PIECES ON IT. NOT ONLY IS IT AN EYESORE, BUT IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE. *TR
WHILE CRUISING ABOUT 35 MPH THE FOLLOWING PANEL LIGHTS CAME ON: BRAKES, ABS, ERROR MESSAGE- VSC (VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL). A WHIRRING SOUND EMANATED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WHICH INTENSIFIED WHEN I DEPRESSED BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKES WEAKLY RESPONDED TO PEDAL PRESSURE. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE SLOWLY TO A PARKING LOT WHERE I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. I NOTE THAT THE BRAKE RESERVOIR WAS FULL AND DETECTED NO LEAKING FLUIDS. I HAD NO WARNING OF THIS FAILURE. THE CAR HAS BEEN SERVICED REGULARLY BY THE DEALERSHIP. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND ADVISED TO TAKE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000. *TR
THE DASHBOARD IS COMPLETELY STICKY AND RUINED. NOTHING CLEANS IT OR TAKES THE STICKINESS AWAY. IT CAUSES A REFLECTION ON THE WINDSHIELD AND INTERFERES WITH MY VISION. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE! IT'S VERY DANGEROUS! *TR

OIL CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR. I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY CONFIRMED THAT THROUGH A TEST, HOWEVER THEY SAID THAT THEY CAN'T FIX IT BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE THE PARTS AND THAT THEY DON'T KNOW WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO RECEIVE THEM!
