TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUN VISOR WOULD NOT REMAIN IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION AND WAS OBSTRUCTING HER VIEW OF THE ROADWAY. THE CONTACT REMOVED THE SUN VISOR FROM THE VEHICLE IN ORDER FOR HER TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE ROADWAY. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, NOR WAS THE VEHICLE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 51,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 49,000. UPDATED 6/4/12 *CN
THE DASHBOARD OF THE VEHICLE HAS PERFORMED TERRIBLY TO NORMAL HEAT, MAKING IT VERY SHINY AND REFLECTIVE. DURING DAY TIME DRIVING THE SUN REFLECTS ON THE DASHBOARD MAKING VISIBILITY IMPOSSIBLE AT TIMES. AT NIGHT STREET LIGHTS REFLECT ON THE DASHBOARD MAKING VISIBILITY POOR. WHEN LIGHT LEVELS ARE BRIGHT AND IT IS RAINING, VISIBILITY IS ZERO AT TIMES. *TR
UNDER NORMAL USE, BOTH SUN VISORS AT THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE WON'T STAY UP. BOTH VISOR STAYED AT FULLY DOWN POSITION, BLOCKED VISION AND IMPACTED DRIVING VISIBILITY. (DRIVER SIDE VISOR HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES). THIS IS A DESIGN FLAW OF TOYOTA CAMRY 2008 VISORS. *TR

I WAS DRIVING DOWN GEORGE ROY PARKWAY (CALERA, AL) NEXT TO THE HOUSE AND THE CAR STARTED TAKING OFF AT ABOUT 40 MPH. I HIT THE BRAKE AND THE ABS STARTED STOPPING THE CAR. IT WAS ALMOST STOPPED AND I LET OFF THE BRAKE AND IT TOOK OFF AGAIN. I THEN LOOKED DOWN TO TURN IT OFF AND I CRASHED OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I HAD A SMALL SCRATCH ON MY FINGER AND I HIT MY HEAD ON THE ROOF. I WENT THE ER THE NEXT DAY AND THE CT SCAN DID NOT SHOW ANYTHING. BUT, THE DOCTOR SAID I STILL COULD HAVE A MINOR CONCUSSION. *TR
WHILE DRIVER WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AND COMING TO A NEAR STOP, THE VEHICLE, A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY, SUDDENLY ACCELERATED ON ITS OWN ACCORD, HOPPING THE CONCRETE CURB, ACCELERATING THE VEHICLE AS THE CAR CRASHED STRUCK AND PUSHED ALONG A TRASH BIN, THRU THICK BRUSH, A STEEL GATED FENCE AND EVENTUALLY STRIKING A TREE WHERE THE VEHICLE FINALLY CAME TO REST. THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY APPLYING BOTH FEET TO THE BRAKES AS IT TRAVELED APPROXIMATELY 150 FEET. THE VEHICLE WAS SUBJECT TO BOTH THE FLOOR MAT AND ACCELERATION PEDAL RECALLS WHICH WERE REPAIRED ON FEBRUARY 11, 2010. THIS INCIDENT WAS POST-RECALL REPAIR. SINCE THE INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND IS CURRENTLY BEING STORED BY AN AUTOBODY REPAIR FACILITY AND AWAITS INSPECTION BY NHTSA AND TOYOTA. *TR

IT WAS 75 DEGREES I HAD ON SHORTS /SANDALS.I CALLED 911 EMTS ARRIVED I WAS CRYING WITH COMPLAINTS OF FIRE FEELING IN MY LEGS FROM THE AIRBAG AND I WENT TO ER COMPLAINED OF FIRE FEELING. ENDED UP WITH FRACTURED RIGHT PINKY AREA FROM STEERING WHEEL AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT FOR SOME REASON; I LEFT HOSPITAL STILL WITH BURNING FEELING IN LEFT LEG. IN ER TWO HOURS, TOOK XRAYS FOUND NOTHING ELSE WRONG JUST SEVERE CONTUSION TO BOTH LEGS. NO CUTS. LEGS WERE BLACK, RED PURPLE FROM TOES TO THIGHS. BY TIME L GOT HOME 4 HOURS FROM TIME OF MVA OCCURRENCE. I RESTED. BY MONDAY I HAD WATER LIKE BLISTERS APPEAR ON LEFT CALF . I POPPED ONE AS THERE WERE A FEW AND ANOTHER BLISTER GREW DEEPER FROM THAT LAYER.EVENTUALLY LARGE AREA APPROXIMATELY 10 IN LONG BY 6 INCHES WIDE WAS FILLED WITH BLISTERS I GAUZE WRAPPED. IT. SAW DOCTOR WED. TOOK OFF GAUZE FROM BLISTERED AREA WE WERE SHOCKED ALL SURFACE SKIN & FEW LAYERS DEEP GONE! EATEN AWAY LIKE ACID. I AM SURE 100% AIRBAG POWDER. POWDER SOAKED IN AT IMPLOSION AND ATE ITS WAY OUT! I NEVER KNEW POWDER IN "AIR" BAGS. AT ER NO ONE TOLD ME TO CLEANSE LEGS. SAID REST KEEP LEGS UP. STAFF DID NOT KNOW TO CLEANSE AFFECTED THAT COME IN CONTACT WITH AIRBAG & SKIN. STAYED IN BED SORE FOR DAYS. AFTER RECEIVING A RECALL NOTICE FOR RECALL 09V388000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL: ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND HAVING THE VEHICLE REPAIRED ACCORDINGLY, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT WHEN DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, HIS FOOT OCCASIONALLY SLIPPED OFF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE COULD BE REPAIRED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 16,000. DRIVEN ON E. FORDHAM ROAD IN THE BRONX, NY THE VEHICLE IN FRONT HAS A SADDEN STOP, I PUSH THE BRAKE AND NO RESPOND ON TIME, SO I HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AND THE AIR BAG NO DEPLOYED. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO WORK MONDAY MORNING MARCH 29, 2010 ABOUT 7:15 AM IN A TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID ON A ROAD SHE USUALLY TAKES TO WORK. SHE WAS ON A STRAIGHT AND LEVEL PART OF THE ROAD. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE. SHE TRIED BRAKING BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP. SHE LANDED UP HITTING A TREE THAT STOPPED THE CAR. AFTER HITTING THE TREE SHE COULD NOT TURN THE CAR OFF. THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS AND IS NOW THE PROPERTY OF OUR INSURANCE COMPANY. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, ATTEMPTED TO MAKE A TURN AND A LOUD NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BEGAN TO STICK WITH A SLUGGISH RESPONSE, FOLLOWED BY THE ENGINE STALLING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM A PEBBLE IN THE HUB CAPS. THE FAILURE HAD NOT OCCURRED AFTER THE SERVICE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE COMPUTER SYSTEM FOR RECALL 10V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL, ACCELERATOR PEDAL). HE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM WAS NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH WHEN ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED AND THE BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. PRIOR TO THE RECENT FAILURE, THE CONTACT HAD TAKEN HER VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE RECALL REPAIRS PERFORMED PER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBERS 09V388000 AND 10V017000, VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT HAS CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE DUPLICATE FAILURES. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 33000.
I HAVE RECEIVED 2 FLOORMAT RECALL NOTICES FROM TOYOTA. IN THEIR 2ND FLOORMAT RECALL NOTICE, TOYOTA STATES "AS AN ADDITIONAL MEASURE INDEPENDENT OF THE VEHICLE-BASED RECALL REMEDY, TOYOTA WILL INSTALL A NEWLY DESIGNED OVERRIDE SYSTEM IN YOUR VEHICLE TO PROVIDE AN EXTRA MEASURE OF CONFIDENCE. THIS SYSTEM WILL CUT ENGINE POWER IN CASE OF SIMULTANEOUS APPLICATION OF BOTH ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS AT CERTAIN SPEEDS AND DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS INSTALLATION WILL ALSO BE CONDUCTED AT NO CHARGE TO YOU." MY DEALER HAS ADVISED ME THAT I HAVE THE PROPER FLOORMAT AND IT IS PROPERLY INSTALLED THEREFORE HE CANNOT INSTALL ONLY THE OVERRIDE SYSTEM. HE STATES ALL 3 MODIFICATIONS MUST BE DONE. AS TOYOTA'S RECALL NOTICE CLEARLY STATES THE OVERRIDE SYSTEM WILL BE INSTALLED "INDEPENDENT...." THIS EXTRA MEASURE OF CONFIDENCE SHOULD BE AFFORDED TO ME AND THE OVERRIDE SYSTEM SHOULD BE INSTALLED IN MY 2008 CAMRY LE. REQUEST YOUR ASSISTANCE. *TR
11 DAYS AGO THE MARINA TOYOTA DEALERSHIP PERFORMED BOTH TOYOTA RECALL REPAIRS ON MY 2008 CAMRY. ON MARCH 10, AROUND 0519 AM, I WAS STARTING TO PARK MY CAR AT THE GYM. I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW INTO THE PARKING STALL. THE MOMENT THAT I APPLIED THE BRAKES; THE ENGINE STARTED TO RACE; THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD; THE BRAKES WERE USELESS IN STOPPING THE VEHICLE; AND I COULD NOT STEER THE VEHICLE. MY VEHICLE SLAMMED INTO A PARKED JEEP CHEROKE; THE JEEP INTURN COLLIDED WITH A PARKED SUBARU OUTBACK. MY VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WE ARE WAITING FOR TOYOTA'S TECHNICIANS TO EXAMINE THE CAR. I AM VERY THANKFUL TO GOD THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED OR KILLED IN THIS INCIDENT. HOWEVER, I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT MY CAMRY IS UNSAFE AND I WILL NEVER DRIVE IT AGAIN. I HAVE WRITTEN THE VEHICLE OFF AS A TOTAL LOSS. SINCE I AM A JEHOVA WITNESS, I CANNOT SELL THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEN I WOULD BE BLOOD-GUILTY IF ANYONE WAS INJURED OR KILLED BY THE VEHICLE. I AM A ELECTRICAL ENGINEER WITH A MASTERS DEGREE IN ELECTRONICS AND CONTROL SYSTEMS. I HAVE 32 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN SYSTEMATICALLY SOLVING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS (PARTICULARLY INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL ISSUES). IN MY CASE, GIVEN THE SIMULTANEOUS FAILURE OF MULTIPLE SYSTEMS (ENGINE RPM CONTROL, BRAKING AND STEERING), THE CAUSE IS DEFINITELY ELECTRICAL , NOT MECHANICAL. MY EXPERIENCE WITH COMPUTER CONTROLS STRONGLY SUGGESTS THAT THE KEY HARDWARE INVOLVED IS THE ON-BOARD CPU. THEREFORE, IN MY PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERING OPINION, TOYOTA HAS NOT DETERMINED THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM.
I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. AFTER THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED, MY VEHICLE, WHILE SITTING STILL, LEAPED FORWARD AND STRUCK ANOTHER VEHICLE. THIS WAS CAUGHT ON VIDEO BY A CAMERA. I'M A SCHOOL COUNSELOR. I WAS GOING HOME FROM WORK AT ABOUT 3:50 PM YESTERDAY, 4-6-2010, GOING SOUTH ON RT. 222, ABOUT 4 MILES NORTH OF THE DENVER EXIT. I WENT TO PASS ANOTHER CAR AND PUSHED HARD ON MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY'S ACCELERATOR. IT LOCKED AND KEPT ACCELERATING AS I PULLED INTO THE PASSING LANE. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE PEDAL ALL THE WAY, MAYBE A HALF A FOOT, BUT ALL I HEARD WAS THE ENGINE RACING AS I SAW MYSELF GETTING CLOSER TO THE CAR IN THE LANE IN FRONT OF ME. I PANICKED AND BEGAN TO STOMP DOWN ON THE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES, I FIGURE I WAS ABOVE EIGHTY MPH BY THEN. AS I WAS TRYING TO DECIDE HOW TO STEER AROUND EVERYONE I HAMMERED DOWN ON THE PEDAL AGAIN AND IT STOPPED. THE CAR ACCELERATED OK AND I CAREFULLY USED THE GAS UNTIL I GOT THE CAR HOME. I THEN CALLED THE NEW HOLLAND TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHO DID THE RECALL FIX ON 3-27-2010, TOLD DOUG WHAT JUST HAPPENED. I NEVER HAD THE CAR DO THIS BEFORE! I ALWAYS THOUGHT IT HAD A GOOD SMOOTH RIDE. DOUG GAVE ME THE 800 NUMBER TO CALL TOYOTA TO FILE FOR A CASE MANAGER. I'M VERY UPSET AND AFRAID TO USE THIS CAR FOR ME OR MY FAMILY. I FEEL LIKE IT'S UNBELIEVABLE THAT IT HAPPENED TO ME BUT IT DID. NEITHER OF THE REPAIRS RECTIFIED THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER A THIRD TIME BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,548 AND THE CURRENT WAS UNKNOWN.
HELLO, I AM AN OWNER OF A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY WHO JUST GOT MY CAR SERVICED VIA A RECALL THIS WEEK. BEFORE THE RECALL, I DID NOT EXPERIENCE ANY SUDDEN ACCELERATION INCIDENTS. I OWN A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY THAT WAS ONE OF THE VEHICLES RECALLED. MY DEALER DID PROVIDE ME WITH A RENTAL CAR FOR THREE DAYS AND REPAIRED THE GAS PEDAL ON 2/05/10. TODAY - WHILE OUT ON THE HIGHWAY AND STARTING UP A SMALL HILL, WHEN I TOUCHED THE GAS PEDAL - IT STARTED REVVING UP REALLY LOUD, I IMMEDIATELY DID WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD TO DO - PUT THE BRAKE ON HARD AND FINALLY THE REVVING STOPPED. I WAS DRIVING MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID ON A MULTI LANE HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 60 MPH, WHEN THE CAR JERKED, ALL INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE ENGINE BECAME COMPLETELY UNRESPONSIVE. I PUSHED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL TO TRY TO MANEUVER TO THE SHOULDER AND THERE WAS NO RESPONSE (NO ENGINE REV., NO ACCELERATION). I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE SHOULDER AND UPON RESTART, THE CAR DROVE HESITANTLY. I MADE IT TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT NIGHT WITH ALL INDICATOR LIGHTS STILL LIT UP. THE NEXT DAY AS THEY BEGAN TO LOOK AT THE CAR, THEY COULD FIND NO STORED COMPUTER CODE FOR THE PROBLEM AND UPON DRIVING THE CAR, IT DROVE NORMALLY. AS A RESULT, THEY COULD NOT FIGURE OUT THE PROBLEM AND HAVE FIXED NOTHING. A TOYOTA SERVICE TECH ALSO LOOKED AT THE CAR WITH THE SAME RESULT. I NOW AM BEING FORCED TO PICK UP MY CAR UNREPAIRED. I HAVE A 2008 CAMRY SE WHICH I TOOK IN FOR THE FLOORMAT AND ACCELERATION RECALLS. THE CAR STILL ACCELERATES WHEN I FIRST START IT. I CAN DRIVE UP TO 30 MILES AN HOUR WITH OUT APPLYING GAS. 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH BRAKE FAILURE. CONSUMER STATES THAT THE BRAKES FAILED WHILE TRYING TO STOP. SAID," OH DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT, I'M SURE THERE WILL BE A RECALL BECAUSE WE ARE SEEING IT ON LOTS OF CARS. MY DAUGHTER IN LAW HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON HER 2007 MODEL. BOTH OF OURS WERE GRAY IN COLOR. I PURCHASED A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY FOR MY EMPLOYER. I USE THE CAR FOR WORK, AND FREQUENTLY USE THE CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN I FIRST BOUGHT THE CAR, I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL, PRIMARILY CLIMBING OR DESCENDING HILLS (I COMMUTE ALONG THE TACONIC PARKWAY IN NY). IF YOU SET THE CAR AT 60MPH, FOR EXAMPLE, THE CAR WOULD SLOW DOWN TO ABOUT 50MPH WHEN IT WAS CLIMBING, THEN SUDDENLY DOWN SHIFT AND ACCELERATE VERY QUICKLY, LITERALLY PINNING YOU BACK IN YOUR SEAT. THIS WOULD THEN CAUSE THE CAR TO SPEED UP TO ABOUT 75MPH BEFORE COASTING. BUT IT WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN THE CAR IN ANY WAY UNTIL I EITHER BRAKED OR THE CAR STARTED ASCENDING ANOTHER HILL. WHEN I HAD A CHANCE, I TOOK THE CAR IN TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND MENTIONED THIS TO HIM. HE ADMITTED THAT TOYOTA HAD A "SERVICE BULLITEN" OUT TO UPDATE THE SOFTWARE AS THERE WERE SOME FLAWS IN THE PROGRAMMING. WHEN I QUESTIONED WHY IT WASN'T A FLEET WIDE RECALL, HE SAID "WE ONLY HAVE TO DO IT WHEN PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT IT". CONSIDERING THE WILD EXTREMES OF THE SPEEDS THAT I WAS EXPERIENCING I FOUND THIS COMMENT TO BE EXTREMELY ODD. HOWEVER, AFTER THEY DID THEIR FIX, THE CAR DID IMPROVE AS IT DOESN'T ACCELERATE WILDLY LIKE IT USED TO. BUT EVEN TODAY AS I WAS DRIVING THE CAR BACK FROM BALTIMORE, IT STILL HAS A WIDE OPEN RANGE FOR IT'S CRUISE CONTROL THAT I THINK IS NOT NORMAL. I HAD THE CRUISE SET FOR 65MPH TODAY, AND THE CAR TOPPED OUT AT 80. + OR - 15MPH IS WAY TOO FAR BEYOND AN ACCEPTABLE RANGE. MY CIVIC CONTROLS THE SPEED WITHIN A +-5MPH RANGE ON THE SAME ROUTE. I PURCHASED A PRE OWNED 08 TOYOTA CAMRY THIS PAST SUMMER AND HAD NOTICED PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING IN THAT IT OVER COMPENSATED WHEN MAKING A 90 DEGREE TURN. AT A CERTAIN ANGLE - FOR ME 90 DEGREES HARD LEFT - THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS INSTEAD OF COMING BACK TO "NEUTRAL" WHEN YOU LIFT YOUR HANDS. IF I LIFT MY HANDS SLIGHTLY OFF THE WHEEL AND REMOVE MY FOOT FROM THE GAS THE CAR WILL "TURN ITSELF" INTO MY GARAGE. A DRIVER EXPECTS THE WHEEL TO COME BACK AND "SLIDE THRU" YOUR HANDS TO NEUTRAL. IN THIS CASE IT DOES NOT COME TO NEUTRAL, YOU HAVE TO ACTIVELY "CORRECT " THE STEERING. IT ALSO SEEMS TO SPEED UP. MY 26 YEAR DAUGHTER COMMENTED THAT IT "TOOK HER BY SURPRISE" AND "TAKES SOME GETTING USED TO." I CALLED TOYOTA IN RESPONSE TO THE PEDAL RECALL AND WHILE ON THE PHONE ASKED THEM ABOUT THE STEERING. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SAID SHE KNEW NOTHING ABOUT IT AND COULD NOT ADDRESS IT. SHE TRANSFERRED ME AN I WAITED ON HOLD UNTIL I GAVE UP. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND DESCRIBED THIS PROBLEM. THEY KEPT IT FOR TWO DAYS AND SAID THEY COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. PULLING OUT OF THE SERVICE BAY I REPLICATED IT - STEERING WHEEL LOCKING AND FOOT OFF THE GAS;CAR KEPT GOING BY ITSELF, HARD LEFT - ALMOST RUNNING OVER THREE OF THE TOYOTA STAFF .
