MY CAMRY 2008 EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN ACCELERATION THIS MONDAY MORNING (2/1/2010). MY WIFE WAS DRIVING TO HER OFFICE. SHE SAW A RED LIGHT THEN STEPPED ON THE BREAK PEDAL AND THE CAR STARTED TO SLOW DOWN. IT WAS ALMOST 0 MPH THEN MY WIFE HEARD THE ENGINE SUDDENLY SOUNDED LOUDLY AND THE CAR STARTED TO ACCELERATE. FORTUNATELY, THE SPEED WAS ALREADY LOW AND MY WIFE STEPPED HARD ON THE BRAKE AND THE CAR STOPPED. AFTER THAT, WE PARKED THE CAR HOME AND RENTED A NISSAN. I'VE CALLED TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THERE WILL BE A FIX NEXT WEEK. I LOOKED AT THE TOYOTA WEBSITE ABOUT THE FIX, AND, HONESTLY, I AM NOT SURE THAT FIX WILL WORK. THE FIX, AT MOST, CAN REDUCE THE CHANCE THAT THE GAS PEDAL IS STUCK, BUT FOR MY CASE, THE ENGINE ALREADY SLOWED DOWN THEN ACCELERATED SUDDENLY. I ALSO CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOM SERVICES, AFTER A LONG TIME HOLDING AND A FEW TRANSFERRING, THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER AND TOLD ME THEY WILL CALL ME BACK IN TWO DAYS. THREE DAYS PASSED AND THEY DIDN'T CALL. I CALLED THEM AGAIN THIS MORNING (2/4/2010) AND AFTER A LONG TIME HOLDING (45 MINUTES), THE GENTLEMAN TOLD ME THE CASE MANAGER SHOULD CALLED ME YESTERDAY AND HE WILL CALL ME TODAY. IT'S 7:48PM NOW AND THEY STILL HAVEN'T CALLED. *JB
VEHICLE DASH LIGHTS GO OUT. WHEREAS YOU CANNOT SEE YOUR SPEED OR OTHER IMPORTANT DASH INSTRUMENTS. *TR
MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY LE TIRES ARE GOING BALLED AFTER ONLY 18000 MILES ON IT WHICH IS BECOMING EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO HANDLE THE CAR IN WET WEATHER. *TR
I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY, WHEN STARTING MY AUTO, THE ENGINE RACES FOR APPX. 30 SECONDS, THEN GOES DOWN. ALSO IN THE LAST 5 WEEKS I HAVE NOTICE THAT THE CAR LURCHES FORWARD THEN GOES BACK TO THE SPEND I HAVE IT ON. I AM VERY NERVOUS DRIVING THIS CAR, THIS PROBLEM JUST STARTED HAPPENING ABOUT 5 OR 6 WEEKS AGO, AT FIRST I THOUGHT I WAS JUST THINKING IT WAS HAPPENING, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE GETTING MORE FREQUENT. I HAVE TO DRIVE IT, IT IS THE ONLY CAR I HAVE, SO DOCTORS APPOINTMENTS HAVE TO BE KEEP, FEAR OR NOT, I HOPE IT DOES NOT GO SPEEDING AN NOT STOP, MY MOTHER IS 82 A VERY AFRAID TO GET INTO THE CAR, BUT WE HAVE TO GO PLACES. WE LIVE ON ROADS WITH INCLINES. VERY STEEP HILLS, ONE HAS A STOP SIGN AT THE FOOT OF IT, BUT SO FAR IT DOES STOP. IT MAKES A LOUD ENGINE NOISE. LIKE A GRINDING OF THE ENGINE, AT FIRST THE BRAKES HESITATE STOPPING BUT I PUSH REALLY HARD ON THEM AND THEY STOP IT. I TOOK IT IN FOR AN INSPECTION STICKER AN THEY SAID IT PASSED. I TOLD THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEM. THEY SAID THEY DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT AT THIS TIME. *TR
08" CAMRY HYBRID - WHEN SET ON CRUISE CONTROL, THE CAR INADVERTENTLY ACCELERATES PASS THE "SET" SPEED POINT WHEN GOING UP OR DOWN HILL, BY MORE THAN 20 MPH BEFORE I DISENGAGED THE CRUISE CONTROL. *JB
I PURCHASED MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY IN NOVEMBER 2008. INSTANTLY I NOTICED TWO THINGS, ONE, HOW THE CAR WAS SLOW WHEN TRYING TO MERGE TO ANOTHER LANE. IN FACT, I ALMOST CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT, VERY SCARY TO SAY THE LEAST. SECONDLY, I SMELLED FUMES AND I ASKED MY UNCLE DID HE SMELL IT AND HE SAID YES. IN ADDITION MY UNCLE STATED, "THIS IS A NEW CAR YOU SHOULD NOT SMELL THESE FUMES. YOU NEED TO TAKE THIS CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP!" I DID, ONLY TO BE TOLD THEY DID NOT SMELL ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING LOOKED FINE. IN REGARDS TO THE MERGING ISSUE, I WAS TOLD THAT IT THE NEWER MODELS ARE NOW RAN ELECTRONICALLY AND THIS IS ONE OF THE DRAWBACKS OF THESE MODELS, AND THAT WAS IT. I HAVE NEVER FELT COMFORTABLE DRIVING MY CAR BECAUSE IT ALWAYS FELT LIKE I HAD A FLAT TIRE. I HAVE HAD THREE ALIGNMENTS, REPLACED MY TIRES AND THE CAR STILL DOES NOT DRIVE WELL. NOW THE RECALL REGARDING THE BRAKES/FLOOR MATS HAS NOT BEEN AN ISSUE FOR ME BUT THE SLOW RETURN OF THE ACCELERATOR MOST DEFINITELY, AND I NOTICED THIS BEFORE I HEARD ABOUT THE 2ND RECALL. I TOOK MY CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ON P'TREE INDUSTRIAL IN ATLANTA, GA ON FRIDAY, JANUARY 29TH, TO GET MY CARBON AIR FILTER REPLACED AND THAT IS WHEN I TOLD THEM ABOUT MY ACCELERATOR AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL ISSUE. SO THE SALESPERSON TOOK SOME INFORMATION DOWN AND SAID THE PARTS HAVE NOT COME IN YET, THEREFORE, THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO. IF THIS WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL WHY TELL ME THAT THE PARTS HAVE NOT COME IN IF I WAS NOT AFFECTED BY IT BASED ON MY CONCERNS? SO NEEDLESS TO SAY, I TOO, LIKE MOST CUSTOMERS HAVE MY CONCERNS. I HAVE ALWAYS TRUSTED TOYOTAS AND NOW THIS. I PRAY NOTHING OCCURS WITH ME AND MY FAMILY WHILE TOYOTA DECIDES WHAT, WHEN, AND HOW TO SOLVE THIS MAJOR ISSUE. *TR
MY TOYOTA CAMRY PEDAL WAS IN THE STICKING POSITION AND WHEN I WENT TO BRAKE THE BRAKES WOULD NOT DO THEIR JOB AND I COULDN'T STOP UNTIL I BUMPED THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, I HAD EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION A FEW TIME OVER THE LAST TWO AND HALF YEARS WITH THIS CAR, BUT NEVER ANY STICKING OR BREAK FAILURE.
THIS IS A PART OF A CERTIFIED LETTER I SENT TO TOYOTA ON FEB. 18, 2010: REPORT / NOTICE: MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HAS EXHIBITED VARIOUS MALFUNCTIONS BRAKE MALFUNCTION ACCELERATION MALFUNCTION ON MY FIRST INCIDENT. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR OVER 40 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A FAULT ACCIDENT UNTIL LAST MONTH, 1/26/2010. MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY ACCELERATED FORWARD. I AM NOT SURE WHETHER IT WAS CAUSED BY THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL OR THE BRAKE MALFUNCTION: I HAD THE BRAKE ON, ACCELERATOR OFF. SECOND INCIDENT. ON FEB. 16,2010, WHILE I WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH COMING TO A STOP LIGHT, I PRESSED MY BRAKE PEDAL. THE BRAKE STARTED SHAKING AND MAKING A WEIRD NOISE AS IF GEARS WERE MOVING/GRINDING. IT WAS UNLIKE THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SRS SYMPTOM. I IMMEDIATELY PLACED MY CAR ON PARK AND STOPPED THE CAR. THANK GOD THAT I HAD ENOUGH TIME/SPACE BETWEEN MY CAR AND THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME: I HAD STARTED STOPPING WELL AHEAD, AS I USUALLY DO. WHEN I STOPPED THE CAR, THE CAR BEHIND ME STARTED HONKING: IT WAS RUSH HOUR. WHEN THE CAR IN FRONT STARTED MOVING, I STARTED MY CAR AGAIN AND DROVE INTO THE NEAREST PARKING LOT. I STARTED MY CAR AND DROVE IN CIRCLES IN THE PARKING LOT. IT RETURN TO NORMAL. I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR NOW. I AM A 59 YEAR OLD TEACHER / GRANDMOTHER AND WOULD LIKE TO LIVE A LITTLE WHILE LONGER. I HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY RECALL LETTER AS PROMISED. WILL YOU PLEASE FIX: (1) ACCELERATOR PEDAL, (2) BRAKE PEDAL, (3) CARPET PROBLEM. PLEASE KNOW THAT AS AN AMERICAN, I AM LIKEWISE CONCERNED FOR TOYOTA'S FINANCIAL LOSSES AND HOPE THAT YOU ARE ABLE TO FAIR WELL. " APPROXIMATELY 3 DAYS LATER (I HAVE THE PAPERWORK), TOYOTA CALLED AND I WENT IN THAT DAY TO HAVE IT FIXED. THEY STATED THAT MY TOYOTA CAMRY DID NOT HAVE THE PROBLEM BECAUSE IT WAS MADE IN JAPAN. THEY WORKED ON IT ANYWAY AND STATED THAT THEY HAD CHANGED THE COMPUTER TO BYPASS THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. I STILL AM FEARFUL. PLEASE HELP ME MAKE SURE IT IS FIXED COMPLETELY. THANK YOU *TR
I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY LE WHICH WAS PURCHASED IN OCT 2007. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 22241 MILES. IT HAS HAD MAINLY HIGHWAY MILES (ABOUT 20MILES) A DAY AND ALREADY IN TWO YEARS, THE TIRES (BRIDGESTONE TURANZA EL400-02) SIZE 215/60/16 HAVE ALMOST NO TIRE TREAD LEFT. THE USUAL WARRANTY ON THESE TIRES SHOULD BE 50K MILES. CONTACTED BOTH TOYOTA AND BRIDGESTONE AND NOBODY IS WILLING TO HELP OUT. SEVERAL COMPLAINTS ON ALL FORUMS REGARDING THIS TIRE CAN BE FOUND ONLINE, BUT STILL BOTH COMPANIES ARE PLAYING THE BLAME GAME, BRIDGESTONE AND TOYOTA KNOW THAT THEY HAVE BEEN USING THESE SUB-STANDARD PARTS. I WILL HAVE TO NOW REPLACE THE TIRES AND PAY OUT OF MY POCKET FOR SOMETHING WHICH A NEW CAR OWNER SHOULD NOT (SO EARLY IN THE CARS LIFE), ELSE IT IS A SAFETY HAZARD ON THE ROAD. I HOPE THIS COMPLAINT IS LOOKED INTO (SEVERAL OTHER COMPLAINTS ON FORUMS) AND NOT IGNORED. BOTH TOYOTA AND BRIDGESTONE NEED TO STOP CHEATING AND PUTTING CUSTOMERS IN DANGER. *TR
TOYOTA'S FAILURE TO REMEDY THE STICKY ACCELERATOR PROBLEM AT A REASONABLE TIME. *TR
WHEN IT RAINS, MY TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID 2008 GETS FLOODED INSIDE. IN FACT, I THINK THIS STARTED HAPPENING ABOUT A YEAR AGO BUT IT BECAME WORST RECENTLY WHEN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA HAD MANY BIG STORMS ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO. THAT WAS WHEN I COULD NOT TOLERATE THE BAD SMELL INSIDE MY CAR ANY MORE. I EXAMINED WHERE THE BAD SELL WAS COMING FROM. I REMOVED ALL MY OWN PLASTIC FLOOR MATS. THEN I REMOVED ALL THE MANUFACTURED FLOOR MATS. I FOUND OUT INSIDE THE CAR HAD ABOUT HALF AN INCH OF WATER EVERYWHERE EXCEPT THE TRUNK. SOME SPOTS GET ALMOST AN INCH OF WATER LIKE UNDERNEATH THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SEATS. I AM A COMPUTER PROGRAMMER AND I REALIZED THAT THERE ARE MORE AND MORE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS IN MODERN CARS. ALTHOUGH MY SOAKING CAR DID NOT CAUSE ME OR ANYBODY ANY HARM, I FELT VERY WORRIED THAT THE WATER MIGHT DAMAGE SOME ELECTRONIC/WIRES COMPONENTS AND LEAD TO SOME DANGEROUS ACCIDENTS. WITH THAT WORRIES IN MY MIND, I BROUGHT MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALER FOR REPAIR. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY NEEDED TO "ADD DRAIN HOSE CLAMPS TO SUNROOF DRAIN HOSES" TO FIX THE WATER COMING DOWN THROUGH PILLARS. WITHOUT ANY HESITATION, I AGREED TO PAY FOR THE SERVICE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. I DID SOME SEARCHES ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND OUT THAT QUITE A NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO ALSO HAVE THIS PROBLEM. I THINK THAT THE MANUFACTURE CAN PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING BY SECURE THE SUNROOF DRAIN HOSES PROPERLY AND FIRMLY WHEN THEY MAKE THE CAR. IF THEY CAN DO THAT, IT MIGHT HELP A LOT OF PEOPLE AND PREVENT SOME POSSIBLE ACCIDENTS. *TR
MY DASH HAS BEEN STICKY TWO YEARS AFTER I PURCHASED MY CAR. I BOUGHT MY CAR BRAND NEW IN 2008. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND SHOWED THEM THAT THIS IS S DEFECT FROM THE MANUFACTURER, BUT THEY REFUSED TO REPLACE IT. MY OTHER CAR IS A TOYOTA COROLLA AND THE DASH IS NOT LIKE THIS. I FEEL THAT TOYOTA NEEDS TO DO A RECALL FOR THIS. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO COME OUT OF MY POCKET FOR SOMETHING THAT WAS A DEFECT FOR THESE VEHICLES. *TR

THE DRIVER AND THE PASSENGER SUSTAINED EXTENSIVE INJURIES TO THEIR BODIES. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND A COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE MANUFACTURER DENIED THE CLAIM AND STATED THE CRASH WAS THE CONTACT'S FAULT. THE INSURANCE COMPANY WAS CONTACTED WHO TOWED THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000.
2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID. CONSUMER STATES PROBLEM WITH BRAKE RESPONSE *TGW THE CONSUMER EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK, WHICH ULTIMATELY CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO TWO VEHICLES. THE CONSUMER TRIED REPEATEDLY TO APPLY THE BRAKES TO STOP THE VEHICLE, BUT TO NO AVAIL. THE CONSUMER ALSO HIT A PEDESTRIAN. (DAUGHTER WROTE IN ON BEHALF OF HER 83 YEAR MOTHER WHO WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE). *JB THE CONSUMERS DAUGHTER THERE WAS NO FLOOR MAT PRESENT IN THE VEHICLE, SO THAT WAS NOT THE ISSUE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE SUN VISOR WOULD NOT REMAIN SECURED IN AN UPWARD POSITION WHICH OBSTRUCTED THE VISIBILITY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED SIGNIFICANT CONCERN REGARDING THE SAFETY ISSUE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY LE. HE STATED THE VEHICLE GEAR SHIFT SELECTOR WAS ABLE TO BE MOVED FROM ONE GEAR TO ANOTHER WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. HE FELT THIS COULD POSSIBLE POSE AS A SAFETY ISSUE. NEITHER THE DEALER NOR MANUFACTURER HAD BEEN CONTACTED PERTAINING TO THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 40,000.
THE FRONT ROTORS IN MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HAVE WARPED TWICE IN LESS THAN 24,00 MILES. IN BOTH INSTANCES THE DEALER CUT THEM, BUT I BELIEVE THERE IS A DEFECT WITH THE PRODUCT. I HAVE ASKED THE DEALER TO REPLACE THEM, BUT THEY HAVE REFUSED TO DO SO. *TR
S10 DIRECT REPLY- LETTER TO THE SECRETARY FROM RE SUPPORT IN HIS EFFORTS TO GET RESOLUTION WITH TOYOTA *TGW 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONSUMER STATED HE NOTICED JUST AFTER CHRISTMAS THERE WAS PAINT PEELING OFF THE REAR BUMPER. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED AUTO BODY SHOP AND WAS INFORMED THE PAINT REPAIR WAS POORLY DONE AND THAT MOST LIKELY THE PAINT SHOP THAT WAS USED FOR THE REPAIR DIDN'T USE ENOUGH UV PROTECTION IN THE PAINT AND THE BASE PAINT WAS PROBABLY INFERIOR QUALITY. THE AUTO BODY SHOP STATED, IF THE UV PAINT PROTECTION WAS NOT USED IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITY AND QUALITY IN A PROPER MANNER THAT AFTER 2 OR 3 MONTHS IN THE SUN, THE COLOR WOULD CHANGE. *JB UPDATED CONGRESSIONAL LETTER 10/27/10. *JB UPDATED CONGRESSIONAL LETTER 10/29/10*JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE AND A LEAKAGE COMING FROM THE STRUTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT ALL FOUR STRUTS WERE DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER AFTER 28,000 MILES FOR THE SAME FAILURE. THE DEALER STATED THAT ONLY THE FRONT STRUTS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 44,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 72,000. AFTER MY CAR HAD BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE IN THE COLD (DECEMBER IN MINNEAPOLIS) FOR THE DAY, I NOTICED THAT, AT VERY SLOW SPEEDS (I.E. CRAWLING), THE BRAKES ON MY CAR TOOK LONGER THAN NORMAL TO BRING THE CAR TO A HALT. DESPITE MOVING VERY SLOWLY, WHEN I PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR STILL CONTINUED MOVING FOR SEVERAL FEET BEFORE I FELT THE BRAKES ENGAGE. I WAS IN A PARKING LOT, SO I TRIED DOING THIS SEVERAL TIMES, EACH WITH THE SAME RESULT. I DROVE HOME ON THE HIGHWAY AND COULD NOT DETERMINE WHETHER THE PROBLEM PERSISTED, BUT I HAVE NOT NOTICED THE SAME ISSUE SINCE. *TR
NO EVENT LED TO FAILURE OF THE 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY SUN VISORS. I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISORS ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO WHERE IT IS UNABLE TO MAINTAIN THE UPRIGHT POSITION AND THE PASSENGER SIDE VISOR HAS FALLEN OFF, WITH THE FIRST PROBLEM BEGINNING 8 MONTHS AFTER THE PURCHASE OF THE CAR. *TR
AFTER DROPPING MY SISTERS OFF AT ONE OF THEIR HOMES, I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR AND THE CAR TOOK A MIND OF ITS OWN AND BEGAN TO INCREASE SPEED AND I COULD NOT GET THE CAR TO STOPEVEN AFTER STEPPING ON THE BRAKE AND PUTTING THE CAR INTO PARK. THE CAR HIT A CHAIN LINK FENCE AND STILL THE ENGINE REVVED AS IF IT WERE TRYING TO GET THROUGH THE FENCE AND THEN IT FINALLY STOPPED. *TR
1) CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT HOLD SET SPEED WHEN GOING DOWN STEEP HILLS 2) INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS DIM TO THE POINT OF ALL MOST GOING OUT, REGARDLESS OF WERE THE DIM CONTROL IS SET. UNABLE TO PREDICT WHEN THIS WILL HAPPEN. SOMETIMES THEY GO DARK AND COME BACK ON AND OTHER TIMES THEY MAY STAY OFF REGARDLESS OF WHAT I DO. I WROTE TO TOYOTA ON 12/11/2009 CONCERNING THESE TOPICS AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED A REPLY. ANOTHER LETTER WILL BE GOING OUT SHORTLY. I BOUGHT A NEW 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY IN NOV 2007, AT AROUND 50K MILES I HEARD A GRINDING NOISE WHILE DRIVING AND EXPERIENCED VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL . I BROUGHT IT INTO THE DEALER AND THEY NOTED THE STRUT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. NOT SOON AFTER THAT REPAIR @ AROUND 80K MILES I EXPERIENCED THE SAME NOISE AND VIBRATION IN THE WHEEL AGAIN AND I TOOK IT TO A LES SCHWAB AUTO SHOP THEY LINKED THE PROBLEM TO THE STRUTS AND WHEEL BEARINGS WHICH CAUSED UNEVEN TIRE WEAR. AS THE CAR WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AGAIN, THEY AGREED WITH THE ASSESSMENT FROM LES SCHWAB AND REPLACED THE STRUTS AGAIN AND THE WHEEL BEARING. THE DEALER AGREED THAT I SHOULD NOT BE REPLACING THE STRUTS AS OFTEN AS I WAS ON A RELATIVELY NEW VEHICLE. DEALER MENTIONED THAT IT IS A DEFECT AND TOYOTA (THE CORPORATION) IS AWARE OF IT AND THAT I SHOULD BE GETTING A LETTER IN THE MAIL TO THAT EFFECT. TO DATE ( 2/26/10) I HAVE RECEIVED NO SUCH LETTER. THE CONCERN IS THAT NHTSA HAS NOT YET GOTTEN TO THE BOTTOM OF ALL THE DEFECTS THAT ARE OUT THERE WITH THE CAMRY MODELS FOR THE YEARS THAT ARE NOW BEING RECALLED FOR ACCELERATOR ISSUES. WITH THE RECENT RECALL I HAD TO BRING MY CAMRY IN TO GET THE GAS PEDAL SHORTENED AND TO INSTALL THE SHIMMY TO PREVENT THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION. PLEASE LOOK INTO THE ISSUE WITH THE STRUTS AS THE STRUT HOUSING SERVES AS A STRUCTURAL PART OF THE SUSPENSION SYSTEM AND IT CONNECTS THE UPPER STRUT BEARING TO THE LOWER BALL JOINT SO THAT THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY CAN THEN PIVOT WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL IS TURNED. STRUTS THEREFORE AFFECTS THE DRIVER'S ABILITY TO STEER AND MANEUVER THE VEHICLE SAFELY, I NOW SEE THAT THE COROLLA ARE BEING RECALLED FOR STEERING ISSUES, I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS IS NOT LIMITED TO ONLY THAT MODEL AS MY CAMRY HAD ISSUES WITH STEERING THAT WAS LINKED TO DEFECTIVE STRUTS. I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA CAMRY,2008 MODEL ON A DRY, FLAT ROAD IN CLEAR,DRY WEATHER, GOING ABOUT 55 MPH. THE ROAD WAS 2 LANES WITH NO SHOULDERS ON EITHER SIDE. I SWERVED INTO THE LEFT LANE TO PASS A TRUCK BUT SAW A CURVE APPROACHING AND WENT TO SWERVE BACK IN BEHIND THE TRUCK, BRAKING TO SLOW DOWN. THERE WAS NO ROOM TO GO RIGHT ( NO SHOULDER) IN ORDER TO AVOID CRASHING INTO THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME,SO I SWERVED LEFT, INTO THE ON-COMING LANE. THERE WERE NO CARS IN THAT LANE. MY CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE AND IT VEERED ACROSS THE LANE, INTO A DITCH ALONGSIDE THE ROAD AND TURNED OVER, LANDING ON THE ROOF. THE OTHER 2 OCCUPANTS OF THE CAR AND MYSELF HAD OUR SEAT BELTS ON AND WERE NOW SUSPENDED FROM THEM AND UNHURT EXCEPT FOR MINOR SCRATCHES AND BRUISES. THE CAR WAS BADLY DAMAGED AND REQUIRED ABOUT $10,000 WORTH OF REPAIRS OVER A 7 WEEK PERIOD. THERE NO OTHER VEHICLES INVOLVED NOR WAS THERE ANY PEOPERTY, PUBLIC OR PRIVATE, DAMAGED. *TR
SAFETY ISSUE WITH MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID I HAVE 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID. IT IS EXTREMELY UNSTABLE ON SNOW. THE CAR SKID A LOT ON SNOW AND BRAKES ARE NOT VERY EFFICIENT ON SNOW. I SPOKE TO GO TOYOTA, CENTENNIAL COLORADO BASED TOYOTA DEALER PERSONNEL AND HE SAID I SHOULD PURSUE THE MATTER DIRECTLY WITH TOYOTA. HE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THEY HAVE RECEIVED COMPLAINTS ABOUT POOR PERFORMANCE OF TOYOTA'S HYBRIDS IN SNOW. I AM REALLY UPSET ABOUT TOYOTA'S HANDLING OF THE CASE AS NO ONE HAS CONTACTED ME SO FAR. IN FACT THEY WERE QUICK ENOUGH TO EVEN SEND ME A CUSTOMER SATISFACTION SURVEY ON HOW WAS THEIR RESPONSE WITHOUT EVEN CONTACTING ME. TO BE ON THE SAFER SIDE I CHANGED MY TIRES WITH HIGH QUALITY MICHELIN TIRES. THE OEM BRIDGESTONE TIRES WERE VERY POOR ON SNOW FROM DAY ONE OF MY PURCHASE OF CAMRY HYBRID. ON NOV. 22, 2009 WHILE I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY FAMILY I HAD A NARROW ESCAPE WHEN MY CAMRY SKIDDED AND HIT THE SIDEWALK. AT THAT TIME IT HAD BARELY STARTED SNOWING WITH LESS THAN 1 INCH OF SNOW ON THE GROUND. THE CAR COULD NOT EVEN CLIMB A SMALL SLOPE ON THE ROAD WHILE OTHER CARS WERE PASSING BY WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. THIS INCIDENT HAS MADE ME NERVOUS ABOUT DRIVING MY CAR ON SNOW. AFTER TIRE CHANGE THE STABILITY HAS IMPROVED BUT I STILL FEEL THAT BRAKING AND STABILITY IS BIG ISSUE WITH TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID. IT WOULD SLOWLY DROP & OVER THE COURSE OF A FEW MONTHS COMPLETELY DROPPED, YOU COULDN'T PUT IT BACK INTO ITS UPRIGHT POSITION, OR ANY POSITION & IT OBSCURED MY VISIBILITY. I TOOK IT TO MY DEALER & THEY REPLACED IT AT NO CHARGE BECAUSE IT WAS STILL UNDER FACTORY WARRANTY. THE GUY IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT SAID THAT THE VISORS WERE BREAKING AND THAT IT WAS KNOWN. THEY WOULDN'T REPLACE MY PASSENGER ONE (EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW IT WOULD BREAK) BECAUSE IT WAS NOT BROKEN. I TRIED TO TELL HIM THAT BEING THE DRIVER'S SIDE THAT WAS DANGEROUS BECAUSE I COULDN'T SEE WITH IT JUST HANGING THERE. WELL, LOW AND BEHOLD, AFTER MY WARRANTY RAN OUT MY PASSENGER ONE BROKE. I JUST TOOK IT DOWN, MY HUSBAND TRIED TO FIX IT BUT COULDN'T. I CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE IT. NOW THE DRIVER'S SIDE ONE THAT I INITIALLY REPLACED IS BREAKING AGAIN!!! SAME PROBLEM. I CAN NOT AND WILL NOT DISH OUT ALMOST $200 FREAKING DOLLARS EVERY TIME ONE OF THESE BREAKS!!! THIS NEEDS TO BE RECALLED AND FIXED!! ESPECIALLY FOR THE DRIVER'S SIDE BECAUSE THAT IS DANGEROUS!!! I WAS DRIVING ALONG A RURAL ROAD AND MY ENGINE SEIZED UP AND THE CAR DIED. IT TURNS OUT THAT THE OIL FILTER FELL OFF AT SOME POINT- 2 MONTHS AFTER AN OIL CHANGE. THE OIL LIGHT DID NOT COME ON UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 30 SECONDS BEFORE THE CAR DIED. WHEN THE MECHANIC SPOKE WITH TOYOTA, HE ASKED IF THIS HAD OCCURRED OTHER TIMES AND WAS TOLD THEY HAD HEARD OF IT HAPPENING ONCE OR TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES FOR THE FAILURE WHERE THE FRONT BRAKE PADS WERE REPLACED. LATER, THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES AND THE BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE. THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP UNTIL THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A STOP SIGN AND THEN INTO A DITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC THAT LOCATED THE FAILURE AT THE BRAKE BOOSTER AND WATER PUMP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 38,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 64,703.
