MY MOTHER WAS DRIVING MY 2008 CAMRY IN AUGUST 2009. AS SHE WAS PARKING THE CAR SHE EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHICH PROPELLED THE VEHICLE OVER A RAISED SIDEWALK AND INTO THE SIDE OF A RETAIL BUILDING. THE VEHICLE HAD 3000 MILES ON IT AND NO MODIFICATIONS HAD BEEN MADE SINCE PURCHASED NEW. THERE WERE FLOORMATS IN THE VEHICLE WHICH MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE ACCIDENT, BUT HAVE SINCE BEEN REMOVED. MY MOTHER SAYS THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE AND REFUSES TO DRIVE IT. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED, BUT PROPERLY DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE WAS $1800 AND DAMAGE TO THE BUILDING WAS $6700. TOYOTA HAS BEEN CONTACTED BUT DENIES ANY RESPONSIBILITY. *TR

MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY LE HAS A VIBRATION PROBLEM THAT OCCURS THROUGHOUT THE CAR AND IS FELT IN THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN THE CAR HITS SPEEDS BETWEEN 40 - 55 MPH, PARTICULARLY GOING UPHILLS IN D. I TOOK IT TO MY TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS WAS NATURAL. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME, "THE CAR JUST HAS TO "SHAKE" SOMETIMES TO GET UP A HILL WHEN GOING AT SUCH LOW RPM'S." I DON'T BUY IT, AND I KNOW OF SEVERAL OTHERS WHO HAVE SAID THE SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED IN THEIR CAMRY'S AS WELL (WWW.EDMUNDS.COM). *TR
MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR BROKE IN AUGUST 2009. THEY REPLACED IT AS IT WAS WITHIN WARRANTY. THE PASSENGER SIDE SUN VISOR BROKE IN APRIL 2011. THEY WILL NOT REPLACE IT AS IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY, ALTHOUGH I HAD BEEN TOLD IT WOULD BE REPLACED AS I SUSPECTED IT TOO WOULD BREAK. THE VISOR HANGS DOWN AND IMPAIRS VISION. I GOOGLED "TOYOTA CAMRY SUN VISOR" AND SAW MANY SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. MANY OF THEM SAID WHEN THEY CONTACTED TOYOTA, TOYOTA SAID THEY DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH COMPLAINTS TO INITIATE A RECALL. THEY ARE GIVING US ALL THE RUN AROUND. I APPRECIATE THE NHTSA LOOKING INTO THIS FOR US AS THEY ARE CLEARLY MAKING THEIR CARS WITH CHEAP ITEMS THAT BREAK AND IMPAIR VISION, THEN LEAVING US TO PAY FOR IT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 60 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ACTIVATED, THE VEHICLE BEGAN ACCELERATING. ON A LATER DATE, HE RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A RECALL AND REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V017000: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL ACCELERATOR PEDAL). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER FOUR TIMES FOR UNINTENDED ACCELERATION INSTANCES AFTER THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THAT BECAUSE THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE A FAILURE, THEY WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT CONFIRMED THAT HE NO LONGER DRIVES THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,882 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 29,120. UPDATED 6/1/10 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD TAKE OFF AT ANY SPEED, EVEN FROM A DEAD STOP AND CONTINUE AT A VERY RAPID RATE OF SPEED. UPDATED 06/18/10.
SPORADIC FAILURE OF THE HEADLIGHT(S) TURNING OFF EITHER ONE OR THE OTHER AND AT TIMES BOTH LIGHT GO OUT AT THE SAME TIME. TURNING THE LIGHTS OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN SOMETIMES RESETS THE LIGHT, BUT THEN GO OUT AGAIN. CHANGING THE BULB DID NOT CORRECT THIS FAILURE. CONTACTING THE DEALER RESULTED IN NO ACTION/RESOLUTION EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY SE. WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEEDS OF 45 MPH IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED TO SPEEDS OF 70 MPH. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FLOOR MATS WERE THE CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO THE FAILURE. THE FLOOR MATS WERE REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE CONTACT DID NOT BELIEVE THAT THE FLOOR MATS CAUSED THE FAILURE TO OCCUR AND NOTIFIED THE DEALER WITH HIS CONCERNS. THE DEALER ADVISED THE MANUFACTURER OF THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WITH THE VEHICLES BUT PROVIDED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT CONFIRMED 2 OTHER OPERATORS OF THE VEHICLE HAD ALSO EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 8,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN SHE DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL, SHE FELT A JOLTING JERK AND THE PEDAL WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR WHEN SHE APPLIED IT LIGHTLY. SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THE DEALER RECALIBRATED THE STROKE SENSOR. ABOUT 8-9 MONTHS LATER, THE ISSUE OCCURRED AGAIN SO SHE TOOK THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE STROKE SENSOR WAS REPLACED. SHE STATED THAT SHE NOTICED NO PROBLEMS SINCE THE LATEST REPAIR. SHE HAD NOT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 24,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 20,000.
JUNE, 2009 MY 2008 CAMRY HYBRID VEERED ACROSS TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC EVEN THOUGH I WAS HOLDING THE STEERING WHEEL AND DID NOT STEER THE VEHICLE IN THAT DIRECTION. ALSO, ON THAT SAME TRIP, WHEN ENGAGING CRUISE CONTROL, MY 2008 CAMRY STARTED TO ACCELERATE RAPIDLY, I DISENGAGED CRUISE CONTROL IMMEDIATELY, AND PUSHED THEN RELEASED THE GAS PEDAL AND IT CORRECTED. *TR

WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH ON HWY, HYBRID SYSTEM FAILURE ALERT TURNED ON. NO OTHER INDICATORS ON. ENGINE TEMP WAS NORMAL. ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER AFTER A FEW MILES AND CAR SEIZED UP, SMOKE WAS BILLOWING FROM ENGINE COMPARTMENT. SMALL FLAMES VISIBLE THROUGH GRILL AND WITHIN MINUTES ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT ENGULFED IN FLAMES. NO PRIOR PROBLEMS EXCEPT THAT ABOUT 6 WEEKS EARLIER THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED. I TOOK TO THE DEALER AND AFTER RUNNING COMPLETE ENGINE DIAGNOSTIC, DEALER ATTRIBUTED PROBLEM TO A LOOSE GAS CAP. AFTER THAT INCIDENT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD NOT REAPPEARED. I HAD THE ENGINE OIL CHANGED AT THE DEALER 4 DAYS PRIOR TO INCIDENT. CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 28,000 MILES. *TR
WAS TOLD A ROCK PUT HOLE IN CONDENSER CAUSING UNIT TO EXPEL ANTIFREEZE. REPAIR ESTIMATE >800. THIS IS HAPPENING FAR TO OFTEN FOR OTHERS AS WELL. THIS HAS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW THAT ENCOMPASSES MANY MODELS AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED. *TR

I TOTALED MY 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY JUNE 2009. I T-BONED A TRUCK AS I PULLED OUT FROM A STOP SIGN ENTERING AN INTERSECTION. MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOTALED THE TRUCK AS WELL. THE PROBLEM IS MY AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. THE EMS WORKER AND THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER STATED THAT WITH ALL THE FRONT END DAMAGE, THE AIR BAG SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED. I'VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH POST CONCUSSION SYNDROME. MEMORY LOSS, TENDONITIS ETC. FOR WHICH I AM TOLD ALL TIME CAN HEAL. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY AND CRASHED INTO A POLE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED FROM THE SCENE. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES AND WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT IS AVAILABLE IF NEEDED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA SOLARA. WHILE RELEASING THE PARKING BRAKE AT A STOP LIGHT, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT INTENTION. AS A CONSEQUENCE HE REAR-ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE FROM SURGING FORWARD HE HAD TO SHIFT INTO THE NEUTRAL GEAR, AND THEN REMOVE THE KEY FROM THE IGNITION. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 11900. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH AND AS THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO ABNORMALLY SHAKE AND VIBRATE VIOLENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE FRONT BRAKES WERE REPLACED AND THE FRONT ROTORS WERE RESURFACED YET THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED. THE VIN WAS AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 23,000.

THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED AND THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THE BRING THE VEHICLE IN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000. I PURCHASED MY CAMRY IN 2007 FROM CARSON TOYOTA IN LOS ANGELES. ON THE SECOND DAY AFTER PURCHASED MY VEHICLE I ALREADY STARTED EXPERIENCING ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH MY MOON ROOF. ON SOME OCCASIONS IT WOULD NOT CLOSE PROPERLY. INSTEAD OF PUSHING THE CLOSE BUTTON, I HAD TO TAP IT TILL IT CLOSES COMPLETELY AND CAREFUL NOT TO OVER TAP OR IT WOULD OPEN ON ITS OWN AGAIN. THIS PROBLEM COMES AND GOES AND I'VE HAD THE DEALER CHECKED MY CAR BACK THEN. OVERALL, THEY GAVE ME A HARD TIME, FIRST RESPONSE I RECEIVED FROM THEIR MECHANIC WAS "THAT'S HOW IT IS" SO I ARGUED WITH HIM THAT YOU DON'T TAP A MOON ROOF BUTTON HOPING IT WOULD CLOSE PROPERLY. I ALSO SPOKE TO THE SALES AGENT WHO SOLD IT TO US AND JUST GAVE THE ANSWER "IT'S A MACHINE, SOMETIMES IT BREAKS DOWN" WHICH MADE ME UPSET AS I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR A WEEK BEFORE AND IF HE TOLD ME THAT THEN, I WOULD NOT HAVE SUNK $20,000 INTO IT IF IT WOULD START ACTING UP ON THE SECOND DAY! ANYWAY, THEY CHECKED MY MOONROOF AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG AND TOLD ME TO COME BACK NEXT WEEK IF IT STILL DIDN'T WORK. UNFORTUNATELY IT STOPPED AND IN THE PAST 2.8 YEARS THIS PROBLEM KEEPS SURFACING AND DISAPPEARING UP TO NOW. THEN AFTER LIVING WITH THIS DEFECT, I HAD THE UNFORTUNATE EXPERIENCE OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHEN MY GAS PEDAL GOT STUCK. I HAVE BAD BACK PROBLEMS BUT WITH SUDDEN PANIC WAS ABLE TO REACH DOWN AND GRAB THE CARPET TO LOOSEN THE PEDAL. SINCE THEN I HAVE NOT FELT SAFE IN MY CAR AND I'M AFRAID TO PRESS ON THE GAS PEDAL TO HARD. I'M CONCERNED ABOUT THE RECALL AS IT DOES NOT PREVENT THE ACCELERATIONS FROM HAPPENING AND IF I HIT MY BRAKES ON A BUSY STREET AND THE CAR DIES, I'M AFRAID OF GETTING HIT FROM BEHIND OR ON THE SIDE ESPECIALLY WITH MY SON IN THE CAR. TO SUMMARIZE: I'VE HAD AN ACCELERATION AND ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS TOYOTA. IF I MAY PUT IN A REQUEST, TOYOTA NEEDS TO TAKE BACK THIS CAR AND REFUND IT'S CURRENT WORTH AT THE TIME OF THE RECALL, SO THAT WE CAN PURCHASE A SAFER FAMILY CAR. *TR

DELAYED BRAKING IN 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID - I HAVE EXPERIENCED WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE A SLOW BRAKING RESPONSE IN MY CAR SINCE I PURCHASED IT NEW IN MAY 2008. I HAVE ALWAYS FELT AS THOUGH THE BRAKES IN MY 2008 CAMRY HYBRID DO NOT ENGAGE QUICKLY ENOUGH IN ALL BRAKING SITUATIONS. THE SENSATION I GET IS, "THE CAR FEELS LIKE IT IS PULLING FORWARD IN RESISTANCE TO THE BRAKING ACTION CREATING WHAT FEELS LIKE A SLOW BRAKING RESPONSE". I HAVE ALWAYS ASSUMED THE SLOW BRAKING RESPONSE IS DUE TO THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE GAS ENGINE, ELECTRIC MOTOR AND THE REGENERATIVE BRAKING SYSTEM. I HAVE DISCUSSED THE CONCERNS I HAVE WITH MY DEALER AND HAVE BEEN TOLD THE BRAKES ARE WORKING AS DESIGNED. NOW THAT I AM READING ABOUT TWO (OR THREE) TOYOTA RECALLS, I THINK THERE IS AT LEAST A POSSIBILITY THAT THE SLOW BRAKE RESPONSE MAY BE A DESIGN FLAW. I WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT 5/13/2009 WHERE I REARENDED ANOTHER CAR ON ROUTE 84 IN FARMINGTON CT. WHEN THE TRAFFIC SLOWED, I THOUGHT I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO STOP. THE BRAKING REACTION IN MY VEHICLE STARTLED ME WHEN THE CAR TOOK LONGER THAN EXPECTED TO SLOW DOWN AND RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS WAS MY FIRST AT FAULT ACCIDENT IN 38 YEARS OF DRIVING. I CONTINUE TO BE STARTLED BY THE BRAKING ACTION IN THIS CAR AND DEFINITELY WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER CAMRY HYBRID. THE CAR WAS REPAIRED BY TOYOTA AND IS IN GOOD CONDITION. THE BRAKES CONTINUE TO PRODUCE WHAT I CONSIDER TO BE A SLOW RESPONSE. MY ONLY OTHER THOUGHT REGARDING THE SLOW BRAKING IS THE POSSIBLE IMPACT OF THE ADDED WEIGHT FROM THE HYBRID SYSTEM AND BATTERIES IN A CAR THAT WAS ORIGINALLY DESIGNED FOR A GAS ENGINE ONLY. *TR
A HEAD ON COLLISION CAUSE AN INJURY TO THE DRIVER'S LEFT ARM, NECK BRUISES, SHOULDER CHEST, BACK AND BACK OF MY HEAD DUE TO THE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY AFTER A STRONG IMPACT IN THE FRONT OF MY VEHICLE. *TR

I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS A COMPLAINT AND WRITE AS I SEE THE TOYOTA PRIUS BRAKE INVESTIGATION. I HAVE A CAMRY HYBRID AND HAD A BRAKE PROBLEM LAST SPRING. ON SATURDAY 4-25-09, MY VSC/ABS/WARNING LIGHT CAME ON WHILE I WAS NEAR THE BAIERL CADILLAC DEALERSHIP. AS I HAD LEASED FROM BAIERL TOYOTA, I PULLED IN THE BAIERL CADILLAC SERVICE AS THE BRAKES FELT WRONG AND TOOK TWO FEET. THE CAR DID STOP. THEY CALLED BAIERL TOYOTA WHO SAID TO DRIVE UP UNLESS FLASHING WARNING LIGHTS. THE LIGHTS WERE STEADY SO I DROVE SLOWLY WITHOUT ANY ACCIDENT FROM WEXFORD PA TO MARS PA TO THE DEALERSHIP. I CALLED MONDAY (ORDERED PART), TUES (WAITING FOR PART FOR BRAKES) AND WED(PART IN MORNING -NEED COMPUTER TO CALIBRATE). THE CAR WAS RETURNED AND THE BRAKES SEEM FINE WITH NO FURTHER VSC/ABS LIGHTS. I DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS. I ASSUME THAT BAIERL TOYOTA, MARS, PA 16046 HAS THE RECORDS AND COULD TELL YOU MORE. I DID NOT PAY MORE ATTENTION AS IT WAS TAKEN CARE OF BY THE DEALERSHIP UNDER WARRANTY. MY FRIEND SUGGESTED THAT I NOTIFY YOU IN THE EVENT THAT THE HYBRID BRAKES ON THE CAMRY SHOULD ALSO BE CHECKED TO HELP SOMEONE ELSE. *TR

SHE WAS DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH ONTO A RAMP AND THE VEHICLE JUST BEGAN TO SPEED UP TO AT LEAST 35 MPH. WHEN SHE TRIED TO USE THE BRAKES, SHE FELT AS SHE WERE PRESSING ON AIR. SHE TURNED THE VEHICLE TOWARD A TREE BUT BEFORE IT CRASHED INTO THE TREE, SHE GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT IS AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DESTROYED. SHE WAS TOLD BY OTHER OCCUPANTS IN A VEHICLE BEHIND HER THAT HER BRAKE LIGHTS WERE FLASHING AS IF SHE WERE USING HER HAZARD LIGHTS. I HAVE OWNED TWO OTHER CAMRYS AND STILL HAVE A 99 MODEL WITH 125,000 MILES ON IT AND NEITHER HAD THAT KIND OF PROBLEM. ON 1/16/09 I REAR-ENDED A MERCEDES SUV AFTER ATTEMPTING TO STOP MY 08 TOYOTA CAMRY. I COULD NOT MAKE IT SLOW OR STOP, EVEN HAVING SUFFICIENT SPACE ON THE ROAD TO DO SO. SHE INSPECTED HER VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE CLIPS DID NOT PROPERLY SECURE THE COVER TO THE AIR FILTER HOUSING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 17000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 31,000. IN THE FIRST 1/2 TO 3/4 OF AN INCH OF DEPRESSION THERE WAS NOTHING, BUT THE NEXT FRACTION OF AN INCH THERE WAS AN UNEXPECTED LURCH. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, HOWEVER THEY CLAIMED NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE CONSUMER THEN RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER IN THE MAIL REGARDING THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER STATED SINCE THE RECALL REPAIR, THE ACCELERATOR NOW GOES FROM 0 TO 15 MPH IN LESS THAN A SECOND, WHICH IS AS DANGEROUS IF NOT MORE SO THAN THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM. *JB UPDATED 05/19/11
I HAVE A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY V6. EARLY ONE MORNING I TOOK THE CAR TO A WASH AND ON THE WAY BACK HOME PULLING AWAY FROM A STOP SIGN THE GAS PEDAL STUCK TO THE FLOOR WITH THE ACCELERATOR WIDE OPEN. IT TOOK A GOOD HALF BLOCK OF STOMPING ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE TO CLEAR. LONGO TOYOTA TOLD ME THEY NEVER HEARD OF THE PROBLEM AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH CAR. *TR

THE INSURANCE COMPANY STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED AND DECLARED THE VEHICLE TO BE DESTROYED. THE FRONT END WAS SEVERELY DAMAGED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED FROM THE SCENE. THE CONTACT STRUCK THE STEERING WHEEL AND SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE CHEST, ALONG WITH BREAST PAIN. SHE WAS THE ONLY OCCUPANT IN THE VEHICLE WEARING A SEAT BELT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE AIR BAGS HAD NOT BEEN PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2008 TOYOTA CAMRY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CONSOLE LIGHTS IN THE VEHICLE ARE TOO BRIGHT AND BLIND HIM WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. HE REFUSES TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AT NIGHT DUE TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 22,000.
