The contact rented a 2009 Toyota Camry. The contact stated while driving 65-75 MPH with cruise control mode engaged, the vehicle became uncontrollable and swerved to the right independently. The contact did not recall whether a warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to swerve back to the left, the vehicle rolled over four times and landed on the wheels. The air bags deployed. The contact stated that her daughter was occupying the rear passenger's side seat at the time the incident occurred and was assisted out of the vehicle by bystanders. The contact's daughter was then airlifted to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with facial lacerations, one punctured lung, and the other lung was not operating at full capacity. The contact's daughter remained in the ICU for four days. The contact was able to exit the vehicle. The contact sustained a broken left toe and burns on the left arm from the air bag deployment. The contact received medical assistance. A police report was filed, but the contact did not have the police report number available. The vehicle was towed and totaled. The vehicle rental company was notified of the failure. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
S10 APPROPRIATE HANDLING - LETTER TO THE SECRETARY FROM JOSEPHINE SZAMBELAN WITH COMMENTS RE FLOOR MAT IN HER 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY INTERFERING WITH THE CAR ACCELERATION. *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, SHE COULD NOT GET THE VEHICLE TO ACCELERATE. THE VEHICLE WOULD ONLY TRAVEL 5-15 MPH. THE CONSUMER ASKED THE DEALER IF THE FLOOR MATS WERE THE PROBLEM AND THEY SAID NO. AFTER TAKING IT UPON HERSELF TO REMOVE THE FLOOR MATS, THE VEHICLE IS NOW ACCELERATING PROPERLY.
IN SAN DIEGO EARLIER THIS YEAR, AT NIGHT, TO ENTER HEAVY AST MOVING TRAFFIC FROM ON RAMP FLOORED GAS PEDAL IN 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY WITH NEW HEAVY DUTY FLOOR MATS, AND HAD MAX RUNAWAY ACCELERATION. WAS ABLE TO STOP WITH HEAVY BRAKE PRESSURE, HITTING STOP ENGINE BUTTON DIDN'T WORK. CHECKED EVERYTHING I COULD AND TRIED AGAIN, SAME RESPONSE, CALLED 911 AND GOT TOW TRUCK ON THE WAY. FINALLY FIGURED OUT FLOOR MAT HAD CAUGHT GAS PEDAL AND WAS HOLDING IT DOWN. PULLED FLOOR MAT BACK INTO PLACE, AND THEN NO PROBLEM. TOLD 911 AS I RECALL TO FORGET THE TOW TRUCK. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHENEVER THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING 65 MPH AND ABOVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FIVE SEPARATE TIMES WHERE BOTH FRONT ROTORS WERE REPLACED. THE TECHNICIAN INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE ROTORS WERE WARPED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 13,371.
POSSIBLE STEERING ISSUE WITH MY 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. CAR DRIFTS TO THE LEFT EVEN AFTER DEALERSHIP HAS ALIGNED THE FRONT END. FIRST ALIGNMENT WAS NEEDED RIGHT AFTER I TOOK POSSESSION OF MY NEW CAR MARCH-APRIL 2009, AND 2ND TIME IN THE SUMMER OF 2009. THE VEHICLE SHOULDN'T NEED CONSTANT ALIGNMENTS, NOT SURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. *TR
WHILE STOPPED AT A LIGHT, WE WERE STRUCK ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF CAR BY ANOTHER VEHICLE AT THE SIDE AND FRONT DOOR WITH ENOUGH FORCE TO ROTATE THE VEHICLE 90 DEGREES, PUSH IT OVER A HIGH CURB AND TO CAUSE NEARLY $15,000 IN DAMAGE TO BODY AND CHASSIS. NOT ONE OF THE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, RESULTING IN HEAD INJURY TO THE DRIVER. *TR

IN ORDER TO STOP THE ACCELERATION THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY EXTREME PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PERFORMING NORMALLY. THE CONTACT HAS NOTICED THE FAILURE SINCE THE DAY THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 8900.

I HAVE A 2009 CAMRY LE I BOUGHT IN DECEMBER 2008. IT SHAKES ALOT IN THE COLD AND WAS TOLD ITS BECAUSE OF SNOW AND ICE BUILD UP, AND I ACCEPTED THAT. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I BOUGHT A 2009 CAMRY LE FROM HERB CHAMBER BOSON IN LAST OCT. RECENTLY I HEARD THE RECALL. HOWEVER, I DON'T BELIEVE THE REASON FOR THE RECALL SIMPLY BLAMING THE FLOOR MAT. I DID EXPERIENCE AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHEN USING CRUISE. THE CRUISE WAS SET AT 70 MPH AND SUDDENLY THE SPEED WENT UP OVER 85 MPH, AND I NOTICED THAT THE ACCELERATION WAS AT ITS FULL STRENGTH AND SHOWED NO SIGN TO STOP. I IMMEDIATELY BRAKED MY CAR TO AUTOMATICALLY SHUT OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL. AT THAT TIME, I JUST BLAMED THE STUPID COMPUTER PROGRAM, WHICH MAY ACCOUNT FOR THE INCIDENT. HOWEVER, WHEN READING OTHER PERSON'S STORIES ABOUT THE RECALL, I REALIZED THAT SOMETHING MORE SERIOUS THAN THE FLOOR MAT WAS ACTUALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THOSE ACCIDENTS. I RENTED A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY FROM ENTERPRISE-RENT-A-CAR. ON JANUARY 23, 2009, AT APPROXIMATELY 7:30 A.M., I WAS THE BELTED DRIVER OF THE SUBJECT 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY. I WAS DRIVING AT A SAFE RATE OF SPEED, PROCEEDING EASTBOUND ON CARDINAL DRIVE IN WOODBRIDGE, VIRGINIA. AS I REACHED THE INTERSECTION OF CARDINAL DRIVE AND JEFFERSON DAVIS HIGHWAY, THE CAMRY SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AT A HIGH RATE OF SPEED AND I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE BY BRAKING. THE CAMRY IMPACTED A 2005 DODGE CARAVAN THAT WAS ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT HAND TURN FROM NEABSCO ROAD ONTO SOUTHBOUND JEFFERSON DAVIS HIGHWAY. AS A RESULT OF THE COLLISION, I SUFFERED A LOSS OF CONSCIOUSNESS AND SUSTAINED SERIOUS INJURIES, INCLUDING A TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY, AS WELL AS NECK, BACK AND LEG INJURIES. *TR
EVERY WEEK, I USE A COOLER (STANDARD SIZE) FOR GROCERIES AND PUT THE COOLER IN THE TRUNK OF MY CAMRY. WHENEVER I MAKE SHARP TURNS, THE LID OF THE TRUNK WOULD POP OPEN, PROBABLY BECAUSE THE COOLER HITS THE LATCH INSIDE THE TRUNK. I CONSIDER IT QUITE DANGEROUS BECAUSE ITEMS MIGHT FALL OUT OF THE TRUNK IF IT'S OPEN. TO MITIGATE THE PROBLEM, WE PLACE PIECES OF CARDBOARD AROUND THE COOLER TO PREVENT IT FROM SLIDING AROUND. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE HEARD OF THIS AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT. I HAVE A 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY HYBRID. I GOT AN OIL CHANGE. A DAY LATER THE DASH LIGHT CAME ON. I JUST ASSUMED THAT THEY DIDN'T RESET MY OIL CHANGE LIGHT. I DROVE IT FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS AND THEN TOOK A 300 MILE ROUND TRIP. WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME, I WAS HEARING A KNOCKING NOISE. I WENT TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THEY SAID THAT THE OIL FILTER WAS NOT ON THE VEHICLE, THERE WAS OIL UNDER THE BODY OF THE CAR AND THAT I WOULD NEED A NEW ENGINE DUE TO THIS ONE BURNED UP. HAS ANYONE EVER HAD AN OIL FILTER BLOWN OFF THE VEHICLE. I'M CURIOUS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT TOOK TWO WEEKS TO BURN UP AND OIL WOULD HAVE COME OUT FASTER IF THE OIL FILTER HAD BEEN LEFT OFF FROM THE OIL CHANGE. *TR
MY 2009 TOYOTA CAMRY MAY HAVE ANOTHER ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES. I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS RELATED TO THE OTHER RECALLS, BECAUSE I SENT AN EMAIL TO TOYOTA ON MONDAY AND HAVE NOT YET HEARD BACK FROM THEM. WHEN I PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, AS I AM COMING TO A STOP, MY BRAKES APPEAR TO STOP WORKING AND THE CAR WILL SURGE FORWARD. THIS HAPPENS A LOT (AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK) AND I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS JUST THE TOYOTA AS THIS IS THE FIRST TOYOTA THAT I HAVE OWNED. I THINK THAT TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE TO BUY-BACK THESE VEHICLES. MY REASONS FOR PURCHASING THE TOYOTA WERE, SAFETY AND RESALE VALUE. MY VEHICLE IS NO LONGER SAFE AND HAS A HIGHLY DECREASED RESALE/TRADE-IN VALUE. WE OWN A 2009 CAMRY. AS HAS BEEN REPORTED REGARDING THE TOYOTA COROLLA, OUR CAMRY ALSO HAS A PROBLEM OF DRIFTING AT HIGH TO MEDIUM SPEEDS. THE DRIVER MUST BE CONSTANTLY ALERT TO THIS PROBLEM TO ENSURE THE VEHICLE REMAINS IN ITS LANE. OUR TOYOTA DEALER ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM BUT SAID IT WAS A TIRE PROBLEM, NOT RELATED TO OUR CAR'S STEERING SYSTEM. WE PURCHASED NEW TIRES BUT THE PROBLEM REMAINS. WE BELIEVE THE STEERING PROBLEM REPORTED ON THE COROLLA ALSO EXISTS IN OUR CAMRY AND THAT THIS UNSAFE SITUATION SHOULD BE CAREFULLY INVESTIGATED. *TR
TOYOTA CAMRY 2009 MODEL CRASH DID NOT DEPLOY ANY AIR BAGS. THE CRASH EXTENSIVELY DESTROYED THE FRONT AND THE FRONT LEFT SIDE WITH EXTENSIVE DAMAGE UP TO $14,000. *TR
IN THIS COLD MORNING, THE REAR WINDOW OF MY CAR WAS COVERED WITH FROST. I TURNED ON THE REAR WINDOW DEFROST. I FOUND THE FROST NEVER MELT IN ABOUT ONE-FOURTH (OR EVEN ONE THIRD) OF THE REAR WINDOW FROM THE TOP, WHILE THE FROST OF THE REST OF THE REAR WINDOW IS COMPLETELY DISSOLVED BY HEAT WIRE. THE HEAT WIRE DID NOT WORK FOR THE UPPER PART BUT WORKED FOR THE REST PART OF THE WINDOW. IT IS REALLY A HAZARD WHEN YOU DRIVE AND YOU CAN NOT REALLY SEE CLEARLY FROM YOUR REAR VIEW MIRROR. *TR
DURING THE FALL OF 2008 I PURCHASED A NEW 2009 CAMRY. NOVEMBER OF 2008 I WAS DRIVING AT 70 MPH WHEN THE CAR BEGAN TO ACCELERATE FASTER WITHOUT PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. WHEN I RETURNED HOME I TOOK THE CAR TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER AND EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM. THEY CHECKED IT, DROVE IT AND SAID THEY DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. I'VE HAD SEVERAL OTHER INCIDENTS OF ACCELERATION OVER THE NEXT YEAR. I'VE REMOVED THE FLOOR MAT. LAST WEEK I WAS AT THE A SHOPPING MALL AND WAS WAITING TO TURN DOWN A LANE WHEN THE CAR ACCELERATED. I WOULD HAVE HURT SOMEONE IF ANYONE HAD BEEN STANDING THERE. I CALLED THE TOYOTA COMPANY AGAIN AND THEY SAID THE RECALL ONLY REFERS TO FLOOR MAT PROBLEMS. *TR

THE PROBLEM LATER OCCURRED AGAIN AND THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. *TS THE CONSUMER STATED HIS FIANCE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN ACCELERATION WHILE APPLYING THE BRAKES TO PARK THE VEHICLE AND ENDED UP ON THE CURB. THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A PHONE CALL AND WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, SO THE RECALL REPAIR COULD BE TAKEN CARE OF, BUT WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE DEALER, HE WAS INFORMED THEY COULD ONLY PERFORM ONE REPAIR. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED AN ALIGNMENT DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE OF THE VEHICLE PULLING TO THE LEFT. *JB
2009 TOYOTA CAMRY HAD A DEFECTIVE PART REPLACED WITH A PART TAKEN FROM ANOTHER CAR ON THE DEALERS LOT. MY CAR, TOYOTA CAMRY 2009, HAD A SAME PROBLEM WITH THAT SUDDEN ACCELERATION BACK IN 2008. THE CAR WAS, OF COURSE, BRAND NEW, AND I HAD THAT SAME EXPERIENCE - ALL OF SUDDEN ACCELERATION. IT WAS AFTER I WAS FINISHED THE ALL DUTIES FOR THE DAY, AND I WAS HEAD TO MY HOME. WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. CAR HAD CRUISE CONTROL ON AND I STEPPED ON THE BRAKES AND DISENGAGED IT AND CONTINUED DRIVING. WHEN I PRESSED THE RESUME BUTTON TO GET BACK ON CRUISE CONTROL, THE CAR ACCELERATED ABOUT 7 MPH PAST THE SET SPEED AND I HAD TO SLAM ON THE BRAKES AND REPEATEDLY PRESS THE C.C. CANCEL BUTTON TO STOP EXTRA ACCELERATION. I UNDERSTAND SOME PEOPLE MAY THINK IT'S THE CAR SPEEDING UP TO GET TO THE SPEED QUICKLY, WHICH IT DID, BUT THEN IT JUST KEPT ACCELERATING AND THE MOTOR WAS WHINING LIKE IT WAS REALLY TRYING TO RACE OFF. THIS HAPPENED ABOUT A HALF A DOZEN TIMES BEFORE I STOPPED USING THE C.C. ALL TOGETHER. WHEN I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD IT WAS THAT THE CAR WAS "ZIPPY" BECAUSE IT WAS A V6 AND IT IS THE CRUISE CONTROL SPEEDING UP TO THE LAST SET SPEED. NO PARTS WERE EVER FIXED ON IT. I ENDED UP SELLING IT LAST YEAR AFTER OWNING IT AROUND 9 MONTHS. *TR
