LAW ENFORCEMENT ENTRY - VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH. DRIVER REPORTS UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AS HE WAS UNABLE TO STOP HIS VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING. INDEPENDENT WITNESS APPEARS TO VERIFY DRIVER'S REPORT. *DT VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH ON A CITY STREET WHEN IT BEGAN TO ACCELERATE FOR NO APPARENT REASON BEFORE CRASHING INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE.*JB
DRIVER SIDE SEAT BELT FOR TOYOTA COROLLA '96 MODEL IS DEFECTIVE: THIS BELT HAS PULLED OUT AND WILL NOT RETRACT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE SUSPENSION WAS UNSTABLE AND THERE WAS A RATTLING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 10E002000 (SUSPENSION). THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERMITTENT ELECTRICAL SHORT IN WHICH THE FUSES SHORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE DASHBOARD WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED AND REWIRED. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE FUSES. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKE LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT THE BRAKE PEDAL HAD TO BE DEPRESSED TO THE FLOOR WITH FORCE TO COMPLETELY STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
FEB 14, 2012, WARNING LIGHT APPEARED ON PANEL. DROVE IMMEDIATELY TO CAPITOL AUTO SERVICE, 94-422 UKEE STREET, WAIPAHU, HI 96797 AND SPOKE WITH OWNER, MR. FOX TO ASK WHAT PROBLEM WAS.(CONTACT PH-(808) 676-1888. AFTER INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THE PROBLEM WAS THE AIRBAG AND THAT IT WOULD NEED TO BE RESOLVED IN ORDER TO OBTAIN UPCOMING SAFETY INSPECTION. AFTER MUCH DIFFICULTY, HE WAS ABLE TO OBTAIN AN AIRBAG WHICH WOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM. INVOICE #2004, DATED FEB. 21, 2012. AMOUNT PAID $948.90. TO DATE, MY VEHICLE IS STILL NOT ON RECALL LIST. I RECENTLY LEARNED THAT TAKATA HAD KNOWLEDGE OF THE DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS 10 YEARS AGO AND DID NOT DISCLOSE THIS INFORMATION. MY CLAIM IS BE REIMBURSED FOR THOSE MONIES PAID ($948.90) WHEN VEHICLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE RECALL LIST AND I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE AIRBAG IN ORDER TO OBTAIN A SAFETY CHECK AND BE ABLE TO OPERATE MY VEHICLE ON OUR ROADWAY.. THE CONTACT STATED THAT DURING RAINY WEATHER, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD TURN INDEPENDENTLY AND THE VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE FROM LEFT TO RIGHT ABNORMALLY BEFORE STRAIGHTENING. DURING THE FAILURE, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKES BUT TO NO AVAIL UNTIL THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP INDEPENDENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER INSPECTED NOR REPAIRED FOR THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 47,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START DURING DAMP, COLD WEATHER WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED ON A FLAT SURFACE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,500 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 112,800. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS AT AN AUTO SHOP FOR REPAIR, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE GAS TANK WAS CORRODED ON TOP. THERE WERE HOLES ON THE FILLER PIPE AND RUST ON THE GAS TANK. THE FAILURE WAS CORRECTED BY THE AUTO SHOP. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 98,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 94,000.
MY TOYOTA COROLLA (1996) WAS TOTALED IN A RECENT CRASH -- BUT THE AIR BAG FAILED TO DEPLOY! *JB

ON OCT 1 2006 MY TOYOTA COROLLA 1996 MODEL ECONOMY TYPE HAD ITS ACCELERATOR STUCK AND I WAS NOT ABLE TO REDUCE THE SPEED OR BRAKE IT. AND AFTER TRAVELING AT ABOUT 70 MILES PER HOUR FOR . 5 MINUTES IT FELT LIKE SOME THING FELL FROM THE FRONT AND THE CAR LOST ALL POWER SO I WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP IN A PARKING LOT. THEN SAW SMOKE FROM THE HOOD AND IT BURST IN TO FLAMES BY THE TIME FIRE CREW WERE ABLE TO STOP ALL OF THE ENGINE WAS ONE BLACK MOLTEN MASS. *NM
I EXPERIENCED THREE FLAT ULTRA HP 4 GOODYEAR TIRES ON THREE DIFFERENT TIRES ON MY 1996 TOYOTA COROLLA DUE TO FAULTY VALVE STEMS IN AN APPROXIMATE 4 MONTH PERIOD (MAY 2005 - AUGUST 2005). THE TIRES WERE PURCHASED IN JANUARY OF 2005 FROM THE GOODYEAR DEALER IN SACRAMENTO, CA. I WAS NOT INJURED BECAUSE OF THE FLAT TIRES. IN TWO CASES HELP ARRIVED QUICKLY, BUT IN THE JULY 2, 2005 INCIDENT I WAS STRANDED FOR SIX HOURS AND IT WAS A VERY FRUSTRATING AND UPSETTING EXPERIENCE BECAUSE MY CAR WAS IMPOUNDED FROM THE HIGHWAY AND I HAD TO PAY A PARKING CITATION BECAUSE THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER UNDER THE GOODYEAR CONTRACT NEVER RESPONDED TO MY CALL. WHEN I COMPLAINED TO GOODYEAR, THE GENTLEMAN AT THE COUNTER IN THE SACRAMENTO OFFICE TOLD ME THERE HAD A BEEN A BAD BATCH OF VALVE STEMS AROUND CHRISTMAS-TIME 2004. THEY REPLACED MY VALVE STEMS WITH 4 METAL, TRUCK-TYPE VALVE STEMS AND I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS SINCE. HOWEVER, IT HAS TAKEN MY TWO MONTHS TO TRY AND GET REIMBURSEMENT FROM GOODYEAR FOR THE IMPOUND AND CITATION CHARGES I EXPERIENCED. UNTIL LAST WEEK, WHEN I SAID I THOUGHT THIS WAS A SERIOUS ISSUE AND WOULD BE COMPLAINING ABOUT IT, I HAD BEEN TOLD THAT MY CLAIM HAD BEEN DENIED, EXCEPT FOR THE $10 TIRE REPAIR I EVENTUALLY WAS ABLE TO GET ON 7/2. THIS WEEK A NEW REPRESENTATIVE MADE CONTACT WITH ME AND I MAY BE REFUNDED MY EXPENSES.*JB
TO TURN INTO OUR ROAD, DOWN SHIFTED THE GEAR FROM 3RD TO 2ND.CLANKING NOISE, FUMES AND SMOKE FILLED THE CAR. NOTICED OIL LEAK. TOWED THE VEHICLE TO DEALER. DEALER SAID 3RD PISTON ROD BROKE AND MADE A HOLE IN THE ENGINE !! WIERD. ANYONE FACED A SIMILAR PROBLEM?*AK
I NO LONGER OWN THIS VEHICLE, BUT IT WAS A 1996 TOYOTA COROLLA, AND I HOPE THE INFORMATION I PROVIDE HERE CAN HELP SOMEHOW WITH ANY CURRENT INVESTIGATIONS. AROUND 100,000 MILES, I TOOK MY CAR TO A NON-DEALER MECHANIC TO REPLACE MY TIMING BELT AS A MATTER OF MAINTENANCE. AFTER THIS REPLACEMENT, MY CRUISE CONTROL NEVER WORKED AGAIN, AND I NOTICED THAT IN MOMENTS OF DECELERATION (EITHER IN BRAKING OR COASTING) THAT THE ENGINE WOULD SUDDENLY RACE AND I COULD FEEL THE GAS PEDAL PULL FROM ITS RESTING POSITION. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE MODEL I'VE INDICATED IS INACCURATE -- I DON'T RECALL WHAT THE MODEL WAS AS I NO LONGER OWN THE VEHICLE. I'VE BEEN AS SPECIFIC AS I CAN BE. I JUST THOUGHT IT MIGHT PROVE USEFUL. THE INCIDENT DATE IS ALSO INACCURATE AS THIS OCCURRED FREQUENTLY ENOUGH TO NOTICE, BUT NOT OFTEN ENOUGH OR SEVERELY ENOUGH TO WARRANT MY TAKING TO A DEALER. *TR

VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A REAREND COLLISION AT 35 MPH AND BOTH FRONT AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DRIVER CONTACTED DEALERSHIP. *AK
1996 TOYOTA COROLLA - WHEN LIGHTS ARE ON AND YOU STEP ON THE BRAKES, THE RIGHT TAIL LIGHT GOES OUT. IT IS DANGEROUS AS WHEN DRIVING AT NIGHT, IT APPEARS TO THE DRIVER BEHIND YOU THAT YOU ARE SIGNALING FOR A RIGHT TURN. I HAVE REPLACED THE BULBS AND IT WILL APPEAR OK, THEN BEGIN MALFUNCTIONING AGAIN. THERE MUST BE AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION PROBLEM IN THE TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY. I HAVE SEEN OTHER COROLLAS ON THE ROAD THAT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD CAUSE ACCIDENTS. *AK
BRAKES FAILED WHILE APPROACHING CARS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT. *AK

REAR TAIL LAMP SOCKET CONTACTS ARE WORN/LOOSE WHICH CAUSES PARKING LIGHTS AND BRAKE LIGHTS TO FAIL TO SHOW INTENTION TO BRAKE AND INTERMITTENTLY WORK. REPAIR OR REPLACE BULBS AND/OR BULB RESEAT ADJUSTMENTS DO NOT HELP OR ONLY TEMPORARILY FIX ISSUE. SAME PROBLEM AS CAMRY'S OF THE SAME YEAR (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 96V037000). ALL 92-97 COROLLA'S I WITNESS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM/ISSUE WITH FAILED TAIL LAMPS BUT THE FILAMENTS ARE STILL INTACT/OPERATIONAL. REQUESTING THAT TOYOTA REPLACE SOCKETS. DT

AFTER TRYING TO START VEHICLE ENGINE WAS MAKING SOME NOISES, AND CONSUMER DECIDED TO TURN VEHICLE OFF. WHEN DOING SO, VEHICLE SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS ON. AFTERWARD, VEHICLE CAUGHT ON FIRE. CONTACTED DEALER, AND DEALER WAS NOT WILLING TO DO ANYTHING.*AK

CONSUMER'S VEHICLE REARENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE AT 20 MPH, AND NEITHER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN INSPECTED BY MECHANIC, VEHICLE SUSTAINED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO FRONT END. NO INJURIES.*AK
THE RESERVOIR'S ATTACHMENT POINTS TO THE VEHICLE CHASSIS ARE MADE OF PLASTIC AND FAILED DURING DRIVING. THE RESERVOIR FELL INWARD AND RESTED AGAINST THE ENGINE BELT, WHICH MELTED A GROOVE INTO THE RESERVOIR. I AM CONCERNED THAT A FIRE COULD HAVE BROKEN OUT AS WELL AS A DAMAGED ENGINE BELT -- ALL FROM A CHEAP METHOD OF RESERVOIR TANK ATTACHMENT. I HAVE DIGITAL PHOTOS THAT I WOULD BE GLAD TO SEND TO YOU UPON REQUEST.
I PURCHASED THE CAR OCTOBER, 2000 AS A USED CAR WITH A WARRANTY. ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER THE CAR BROKE DOWN AND HAD TO BE TOWED TO DEALER THAT I BOUGHT IT FROM. A REBUILT ENGINE BLOCK WAS PUT IN BECAUSE OF MAJOR OIL PROBLEMS. IT TOOK OVER A MONTH FOR THEM TO FINISH THE REPAIR. I WAS ASSURED THAT IT WAS OK. ABOUT 5 MONTHS LATER THE CAR STARTED LEAKING OIL AND I HAD TO CONSTANTLY WATCH THE OIL LEVEL. I WAS TOLD BY THE SAME DEALER THAT IT WAS NORMAL TO HAVE TO WATCH THE OIL ON A CAR THAT OLD. I GOT MORE CONCERNED AND CALLED ANOTHER DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT NORMAL SO I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALER. I INSISTED THAT THE CAR BE LOOKED AT. AGAIN THE ENGINE BLOCK HAD TO BE REPLACED AS SOMETHING WAS NOT PUT ON CORRECTLY (THAT IS THE EXCUSE THEY GAVE ME). THIS TOOK ABOUT 2 WEEKS TO REPAIR. AGAIN I WAS ASSURED THAT THE CAR WOULD LAST THIS TIME. THE ENGINE WAS UNDER WARRANTY AT THIS TIME. THREE MONTHS LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON SO I TOOK IT BACK AGAIN. THEY FIXED THAT PROBLEM BUT I AM NOT SURE WHAT THEY DID AT THAT TIME. I DROVE THE CAR JUST OVER A YEAR AND JUST THIS WEEK THE CAR STARTED SMOKING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS MAJOR WORK ON THE ENGINE THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE BUT THE WARRANTY WAS OUT. IT WILL BE VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX IT AND SO THEY DID NOT WANT TO DO IT. NOW I HAVE A CAR THAT DOES NOT RUN WITHOUT SMOKING AND I STILL OWE $7000 ON IT. I AM VERY UPSET BECAUSE IT SEEMS THAT THEY SOLD ME A CAR WITH MAJOR PROBLEMS THAT THEY NEVER COULD FIX.

I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE (PARALLEL, SIDE OF THE ROAD) WHEN I WAS STRUCK BY A CROWN VICTORIA GOING AT LEAST 50MPH. THE IMPACT CAUSED THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF MY CROLLA TO FOLD, ACCORDIAN STYLE, AND RESULTED IN A COMPLETE LOSS OF THE VEHICLE. NEITHER THE DRIVER SIDE NOR PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I WAS WEARING MY SEATBELT, SO ONLY MINOR INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED.*AK

I WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT 10/23/00, IN WHICH I HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE FROM BEHIND. I WAS DRIVING AT 45MPH. MY AIR BAGS FAILED TO GO OFF. LUKILY, I WAS WEARING MY SEAT BELT. THE ESTIMATED DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE IS OVER $6,000, WHICH IS MORE THAN THE CAR IS WORTH. ALSO, IN FEB. OF THIS YEAR, WHILE AT A STOP LIGHT, ANOTHER DRIVER INFORMED ME MY LEFT TAIL LIGHT WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE CAUSED MY ALTERNATOR TO BLOW, AND THE BATTERY TO DRAIN. I TOOK MY CAR BACK TO THE DEALER, THEY COULDN'T FIND THE CAUSE. I TOOK MY CAR TO A TOYOTA DEALER, AND NOT ONLY COULD THEY NOT FIND THE CAUSE, BUT THEY SAID THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THAT HAPPENING BEFORE. AFTER TOWING FEES, BATTERY, ALTERNATOR, ALL NEW FUSES, TAIL LIGHT AND WIRE HARNESS I SPENT $500.*AK
FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS SEIZED; BRAKES PADS CRACKED, DRUMS REPLACED. 3 TIMES REAR PADS CRACKED AND BLEW, AS IF CAR WAS DRIVEN WITH FEET ON BOTH ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE, OR DRIVEN WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE ON; BUT NEITHER WAS THE CASE. CAR WAS DRIVEN IN A NORMAL, MODERATE MANNER, AND AFTER ONLY 3 MONTHS THE REAR SHOES BURNED/CRACKED, AND WORN ALMOST THROUGH, AND THE REAR DRUMS NEED REPLACING. FIRESTONE (WHO DID REPAIRS) SAY NO MECHANICAL REASON CAN BE FOUND, BUT MECHANICAL FAILRUE OF SOME KIND IS ONLY POSSIBLE EXPLANATION. *AK

FIRE OCCURRED AT THE GAS NOZZLE WHICH WAS 3 TO 5 SECONDS INTO THE FUELING PROCESS.CONSUMER CONTACTED THE DEALER. *AK
THE CONSUMER WAS DRIVING AT 40 MPH WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE REAR ENDED CONSUMER'S VEHICLE. UPON IMPACT, DRIVER'S SIDE AND PASSENGER'S SIDE AIR BAGS DIDN'T DEPLOY. *AK
CONSUMER WAS SITTING AT A LIGHT WAITING TO PROCEED, VEHICLE WENT INTO REVERSE FROM DRIVE AND THEN POPPED INTO REVERSE. *AK
TAIL LIGHTS GO OFF AND ON INTERMITTENTLY. WHEN TAIL LIGHTS ARE NOT WORKING, CRUISE CONTROL DOES NOT WORK. WHEN CRUISE CONTROL IS OPERATIONAL, IT STOPS WORKING IF I TURN ON HEADLIGHTS. I HAVE BEEN TO THE DEALER 8 OR 9 TIMES WHEN THIS IS HAPPENING AND AM ALWAYS TOLD THE BULB HAS BLOWN AND THEY REPLACE IT AND SEND ME ON MY WAY. THERE IS APPARENTLY A SHORT IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BECAUSE WHEN WE PULL OUT THE "BLOWN" BULB AND PUT IT BACK IN, THE LIGHTS WILL WORK AGAIN. THE DEALER HAS BEEN OF ABSOLUTELY NO ASSISTANCE OVER THE PAST 6 YEARS.*AK

TRANSMISSION ON CAR FAILS WITHOUT ANY KIND OF WARNINGS. AT HIGH SPEEDS, IT DOES NOT ALLOW DRIVER ENOUGH TIME TO PULL-OVER. IN CASE OF HEAVY TRAFFIC THIS WILL BECOME A HUGE RISK FOR DRIVER AND OTHER CARS BEHIND. THIS WILL LIKELY CAUSE A MAJOR ACCIDENT. I WAS LUCKY BOTH TIMES SINCE THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC WHEN TRANSMISSION FAILED. MANUFACTURER HAS REFUSED A RE-PURCHASE. VEHICLE IS UNSAFE FOR DRIVING AND NEEDS TO GO THROUGH A THOROUGH INSPECTION.

BROUGHT CAR TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER(AK TOYOTA,GU) AND TOYOTA MECHANICS TORE THE ENGINE APART AND THEN I WAS INFORMED THAT TO REPAIR THIS ENGINE IT WILL COST OVER $6,000.00, BECAUSE THE WARRANTY DID NOT COVER DAMAGES CAUSED BY ENGINE SLUDGE.
