TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE SITTING IDLE AT A TRAFFIC STOP WITH THE BRAKES DEPRESSED, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF HERS. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AFTER THE CRASH. THERE WERE NO REPORTED INJURIES. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THERE WERE UNKNOWN REPAIRS MADE TO THE VEHICLE. FOLLOWING REPAIRS, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT WHEN BRAKING TO A STOP, THE VEHICLE WOULD ABNORMALLY VIBRATE EXCESSIVELY. THE DEALER REPLACED THE ROUTERS ON THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, THE CONTACT BELIEVED THE FAILURE TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V338000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: POWER ASSIST: VACUUM). THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKES WERE INOPERABLE DURING THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION FAILURE AND BELIEVED THE BRAKES WERE ALSO DEFECTIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,000.
WE BOUGHT A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA IN OCT OF 2008. NOTICED THE TOUCHY STEERING, BUT WAS TOLD THAT WAS NORMAL BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING IT ON A SIDE STREET IN HUNTINGTON, WV WHEN SHE HIT A POT HOLE OR A MANHOLE TRAVELING AT ABOUT 15 TO 20 MPH. THE STEERING LOCKED UP AND SHE HIT A PARKED CAR. IT BROKE THE ABS WIRING HARNESS AND CAUSED $10,994.79 DAMAGE TO CAR. WE THEN FOUND OUT THAT THE TIRES WERE BALD AT 15,000 MILES AND THE BRAKES WERE VERY THIN. TOYOTA HAD JUST SERVICE THE CAR AT 13,000 MILES AND DID NOT TELL ME THE TIRES OR THE BRAKES WERE BAD. WE DO NOT KNOW EXACTLY WHAT CAUSED THE STEERING TO LOCK UP. THE REPAIR SHOP COULD NOT TELL US EITHER DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. *TR
THANK YOU NHTSA ! HELLO, I HAVE HAD EXTREME ISSUES WITH THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ON MY 2009 COROLLA. THERE IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE STEERING ON MINE AND MANY OTHER 2009 COROLLA'S. THE CAR IS DANGEROUS! THE COROLLA SWERVES FROM LEFT TO RIGHT BY ITS SELF AND IS VERY VERY SCARY AT TIMES. A GOOD EXAMPLE WOULD BE TO IMAGINE YOUR CAR BEING HIT BY EXTREME WINDS FROM THE LEFT AND RIGHT SIMULTANEOUSLY. I HAVE NEARLY BEEN INVOLVED IN TWO ACCIDENTS IN THIS CAR. I HAVE BEEN TO THE AVONDALE TOYOTA DEALER IN ARIZONA TWICE AND THEY ALWAYS TOLD ME THE CAR WAS WITH IN SPECS. THE REGIONAL MANAGER WAS INFORMED OF MY PROBLEM YET HE WOULDN'T EVEN DRIVE MY CAR TO SEE THE PROBLEM. AS IF I WAS CRAZY OR SOMETHING, I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL CUSTOMER TO TOYOTA FOR MANY YEARS AND THIS FEELS LIKE A SLAP IN THE FACE. I AM VERY EDUCATED IN MECHANICS OF AUTOMOBILES AND HAVE DRIVEN MANY CARS. THIS IS NOT DRIVER ERROR! I ALSO HAVE TO SAY, I HAVE BEEN MORE UPSET OVER THE DENIAL OF THIS PROBLEM EVEN MORE THAN THE PROBLEM ITS SELF. IF TOYOTA WOULD HAVE LISTENED TO ME AND ACTUALLY DRIVEN MY CAR THEY PROBABLY COULD HAVE SAVED THEM A TON OF MONEY ON ALL THE RECALLS NOW. GOOD LESSON TO ALL BUSINESS'S. LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH; PROCEEDING TO A COMPLETE STOP. THE ENGINE REVVED DURING BRAKING. HER LEFT FOOT WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, AND TAPPING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WITH THE RIGHT FOOT, THE RPM LEVEL DECREASED. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO OPERATE NORMALLY. THE ACCELERATION ISSUES OCCURRED SEVEN DIFFERENT TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURES ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THERE WERE NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE. NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V017000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL: ACCELERATOR PEDAL) WAS RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURES WERE MORE PREVALENT TO OCCUR IN COLDER WEATHER TEMPERATURES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 14,200. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 800.
I PURCHASED A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA LE IN EARLY DECEMBER 2008. MUCH LIKE MY 1999 TOYOTA COROLLA LE, IT CANNOT HOLD THE ROAD ABOVE 50 TO 55 MILES PER HOUR. THE VEHICLE STILL IS UNDER 2000 MILES ON IT AND WE JUST CAME BACK FROM A 1500 MILE TRIP TO SEVERAL STATES. HERE IN NC, THE SPEED LIMIT IS 70 MPH ON MANY HIGHWAYS. I'M IN THE CAR EVERYONE ELSE IS PASSING, BECAUSE MY TOYOTA COROLLA SWERVES TO EITHER THE RIGHT OR LEFT REQUIRING CONSTANT CORRECTION AS IF ONE WAS DRIVING THROUGH A HURRICANE, EVEN THOUGH IT'S NOT WINDY. THE DESCRIPTION I AM SENDING IN MAY OR MAY NOT BE CONNECTED TO THE TOYOTA RECALLS FOR BRAKES OR GAS PEDAL STICKING. I PURCHASED A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA "S" SEDAN IN THE SUMMER OF 2008. AFTER OWNING THE VEHICLE FOR APPROXIMATELY 3-6 MONTHS, I DETECTED INSTABILITY IN THE STEERING OF THE VEHICLE WHEN TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS DOWN THE I-95 CORRIDOR, SOUTH OF THE WASHINGTON DC AREA. I REPORTED THIS TO CLOSE FRIENDS, BUT AFTER DISCUSSION WITH THE FRIEND, ATTRIBUTED IT TO THE NEW ELECTRIC POWER STEERING AND TO A SMALLER WHEELBASE VEHICLE THAT I'M NOT ACCUSTOMED TO DRIVING. AFTER MONITORING RECENT PRESS REPORTS THAT OTHER CONSUMERS HAVE BROUGHT TO LIGHT REGARDING THE SAME SITUATION, I FELT COMPELLED TO REPORT OUR EXPERIENCE, WHICH WAS WELL BEFORE THE RECENT, MYRIAD RECALLS ISSUED BY TOYOTA. *TR

I OWN A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA AND THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE STEERING HAS TO BE CONSTANTLY ADJUSTED TO KEEP IT FROM WONDERING OFF CENTER. THIS OCCURS AT ALL SPEEDS. IT REMINDS ME OF DRIVING A GO-CART. THE STEERING IS EXTREMELY SENSITIVE TO ANY TURNING OF THE STEERING WHEEL. IT RESPONDS MORE LIKE DRIVING WITH A JOYSTICK. THE TIRES ARE PROPERLY INFLATED. THE CAR IS NEW WITH ONLY 4,200 MILES AND HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN ON ROUGH ROADS. A TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE REP (NAPLES, FL) SAID IT IS NATURAL WITH SMALL CARS. I FIND IT VERY DIFFICULT TO DRIVE WITHOUT CONSTANTLY WATCHING THE ROAD AND ADJUSTING THE STEERING. LOOKING TO THE SIDE SUCH AS READING A ROAD SIGN COULD GET ME IN A LOT OF TROUBLE. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS AT ALL TIME AND NOT ON A PARTICULAR DAY PER BELOW. *TR
AIR BAGS NOT DEPLOYING IN CAR THAT FLIPPED OVER AND LOST CONTROL OF CAR. CAR WAS TOTALED. *TR
WE OWN A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE STEERING IS TERRIBLE. ON THE HWY IT IS AS THOUGH THE WIND IS BLOWING HARD AND BLOWING THE CAR ALL OVER THE PLACE. LATELY WE WERE ON THE HWY AND WATCHED THE TREE TOPS NO WIND BUT THE CAR WAS ALL OVER THE LANE. IT IS DIFFICULT TO KEEP IT ON TRACK I WOULD SAY OVER 40MPH. I WAS DRIVING MY DAUGHTER AND GRANDCHILDREN HOME ONE EVENING AND IT JUST VEERED OFF THE ROAD TO THE RIGHT. MY DAUGHTER ASKED ME WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPENED. I BELIEVE IT IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM. I HAVE TWO RELATED CONCERNS ABOUT THE 2009 COROLLA S WITH TRACTION AND STABILITY CONTROL. IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THERE IS AN UNRESOLVED SOFTWARE ISSUE WITH THE ABS / STABILITY SYSTEM. I NOTICED THE FIRST ISSUE AT ONLY 6000 MILES, RIGHT AFTER MY SECOND SERVICE AT THE TOYOTA DEALER. THEY PERFORMED THE BRAKE MANIFOLD RECALL RELATED TO NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V338000 DURING THAT SERVICE. THE FRONT BRAKES BEGAN TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY DURING BRAKING FROM 65 MPH. IT FELT LIKE THE ROTORS WERE SEVERELY WARPED WHEN THIS OCCURRED. THIS DOES NOT OCCUR EVERY TIME. THE TOYOTA DEALER EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANY ISSUES AND WOULD NOT TEST THE VEHICLE ABOVE 55 MPH. EACH TIME I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR A SCHEDULED SERVICE, THE PROBLEM WOULD SUDDENLY GET WORSE AGAIN. THEY LIKE TO TIGHTEN THE REAR BRAKES EACH TIME. I ASKED THEM TO LEAVE THE REAR BRAKES ALONE AND DID NOT SEE THE NORMAL AGGRAVATION OF THE FRONT DISK PULSATION ISSUE. I DO STILL SEE SEVERE VIBRATION PERIODICALLY. THIS SYMPTOM APPEARS TO OCCUR MOST WHEN THE AMBIENT EXTERNAL TEMPERATURE IS LOWER THAN 2 DEGREES BELOW FREEZING AND ALL THE LIGHTS ARE FULLY LIT. DUE TO THE SPORADIC NATURE OF THE VIBRATION, MY CONCERN IS THAT THE ABS SYSTEM IS UNABLE TO KEEP UP OR THERE IS A VOLTAGE FLUCTUATION WITH ALL THE LIGHTS ON THAT TRIGGERS THE SYSTEM TO PULSE THE BRAKES INTENTIONALLY. I HAVE FOUND OTHERS ARE SEEING THE SAME TYPE OF ISSUE AND NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE A SIMILAR REQUEST ODI ID NUMBER: 10359202 FROM SOMEONE THAT HAS THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL WITH MANY IDENTICAL VIN NUMBER DIGITS. I CURRENTLY HAVE THE ORIGINAL PARTS ON THE VEHICLE, IF YOU NEED TO INSPECT THEM. MY SECONDARY CONCERN OCCURRED WHEN I TESTED THE EMERGENCY (HAND) BRAKE ON A LONG STRAIGHT ROAD. THE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM THREW THE VEHICLE FROM SIDE TO SIDE VIOLENTLY WHICH COULD EASILY CAUSE COMPLETE LOSS OF CONTROL. THIS APPEARS TO BE A SOFTWARE ISSUE DUE TO AN 'UNFORESEEN' BUT PLAUSIBLE CONDITION. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE PERSISTED AND REQUIRED 4 QUARTS OF OIL TO BE ADDED TO THE ENGINE WEEKLY. THE MANUFACTURER WAS INFORMED OF FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. THE CONACT E STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT UNKNOWN SPEEDS, SHE HEARD AN UNUSUAL NOISE COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTED IT, AND THE NOISE STOPPED. SHE ALSO NOTICED THAT WHEN ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE IN RAINY WEATHER OR WET ROAD CONDITIONS, THERE WAS AN ABNORMAL HESITATION, AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE DEALER ADVISED THE FUEL SENSOR WAS CAUSING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED OR DIAGNOSED. THE CAR IS LESS THEN A WEEK OLD. NOTICE THE PROBLEM ON MY FIRST TRIP ON THE INTERSTATE. ONE THING TO NOTE WHEN TURNING ANY CORNER THE STEERING WHEEL WON'T RECOVER STRAIGHT AS IF IT FORGOT I TURNED. THE CAR IS LESS THAN A WEEK OLD. NOTICE THE DANGEROUS PROBLEM ON MY FIRST TRIP ON THE INTERSTATE. I LOOK IT BACK FOR SERVICE THE NEXT DAY. FOR 2 DAYS TOYOTA SERVICE CHECKED ALIGNMENT AND DROVE IT. THEY FIND THE STEERING WHEEL IN TOLERANCE. SCOTTY SAID IT'S NORMAL FOR THIS TYPE OF NEW ELECTRIC STEERING. YOU MUST KEEP BOTH HANDS ON STEERING WHEEL OR IT WILL STEER OUT OF ASSIGN LANE. AFTER A 2ND TRIP IN A WEEK OF OWNING THIS CAR DECIDED TO TEST DRIVE A DIFFERENT 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA AND DROVE JUST FINE. I ONLY WISHED MINE WOULD HAVE DROVE STRAIGHT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS OF 5 MPH AND UP, THE VEHICLE WOULD DRIVE VERY "BOUNCY," SIMILAR TO DRIVING A ROCKING CHAIR, AS DESCRIBED BY THE CONTACT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. ALSO, UPON BARELY DEPRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, THE VEHICLE WOULD ABNORMALLY ACCELERATE AS IF SHE HAD SLAMMED HER FOOT ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. WHILE TRAVELING AROUND A CURVE OR MAKING A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN, THE VEHICLE WOULD MOMENTARILY ACCELERATE AND FEEL AS THOUGH THE DRIVER MIGHT LOSE CONTROL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED, HOWEVER THEY WOULD NOT ASSIST. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE TO THE VEHICLE TO DATE. THE CONTACT WAS UNAWARE IF HER VEHICLE WAS UNDER RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 1,925 AND THE CURRENT WAS 88,050.
AS SOON AS I DROVE HOME IN MY NEW 2009 COROLLA I REALIZED IT WAS DIFFICULT TO STEER. IT IS OVERLY SENSITIVE AND REQUIRES CONSTANT RECOMPENSATION TO KEEP IT STRAIGHT. I HAVE HAD THE CAR A YEAR NOW AND THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. I CALLED THIS PROBLEM IN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. *TR
POWER STEERING SEEMS OVERLY SENSITIVE. CONSTANT MINOR CORRECTIONS TO STEERING WHEEL ARE REQUIRED TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN A STRAIGHT LINE. EVEN WITH ALL THE EXTRA STEERING WHEEL CORRECTIONS, I STILL END UP WEAVING DOWN THE ROAD. I HAVE HEARD OTHERS SAY THEY FEEL AS IF THE ARE LOSING CONTROL. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT I HAVE TO CONTROL TOO MUCH. I HAVE HAD SIX OTHER TOYOTA COROLLAS NONE OF WHICH HAD THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. THEY ARE FINE. I NOTICED THIS BEHAVIOR AS SOON AS I DROVE THE CAR HOME FROM THE DEALER ON THE DAY OF PURCHASE IN JANUARY, 2009. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THIS I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER (METRO TOYOTA, CLEVELAND, OHIO) THAT WHAT I AM EXPERIENCING IS NORMAL FOR A CAR WITH ELECTRIC POWER STEERING. I'M NOT SO SURE. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA, A CAR THAT JUST ABOUT KILLED US. THIS CAR WONDERS FROM ONE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO THE OTHER. WHEN YOU GO PAST 55MPH THE CAR BECOMES UNCONTROLLABLY. I TOOK THIS CAR BACK TO THE CAR DEALER AND THEY SAID EVERYTHING ON THE CAR WAS FINE BUT STILL THE PROBLEM CONTINUES. WENT BACK A SECOND TIME AND HAD CUSTOMER SERVICE MANAGER DRIVE THE CAR AND SHE SAID THE CAR'S STEERING WAS OUT OF CONTROL AND SOMETHING WAS DEFINITELY WRONG WITH THE CAR, ALSO THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN SAID THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. I WAS DRIVING MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. ONCE, PRIOR TO THE EVENT IN QUESTION I HAD BRIEFLY NOTICED A LACK OF ACCELERATION. I PRESSED ON THE ACCELERATOR AND NOTHING HAPPENED. I TRIED TO ACCELERATE SLIGHTLY TO THE SPEED LIMIT OF 35MPH AND DISCOVERED (AGAIN, WITH NO WARNING) THAT MY CAR WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. NONE OF THE SYSTEMS WORKED STEERING ETC. BUT AT THAT SPEED I DID MANAGE TO STOP. I CALLED 911 AND THE POLICE STOPPED 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC AND PUSHED ME TO THE SIDE. I WAITED AN HOUR FOR AAA AND HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALER. IT TOOK THEM A WHOLE DAY TO DECIDE IT WAS AN ELECTRONIC PROBLEM AND TO "FIX" IT. I ORDERED A NEWLY-DESIGNED 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA XLE FROM A LOCAL DEALERSHIP. IT ARRIVED IN AUGUST, 2009. THE DEALERSHIP HAD NO XLE MODELS ON THE LOT, SO A TEST DRIVE WAS NOT POSSIBLE. AFTER THE CAR ARRIVED, I NOTICED THAT THE CAR WAS PULLING INDEPENDENTLY ON THE ROAD TO THE LEFT WITHOUT JUST CAUSE. I THOUGHT MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE THE DEALERSHIP CHECK THE TIRES/STEERING/ OR ALIGNMENT ON MY NEXT VISIT. AS THE WEATHER BECAME MORE RAINY IN THE FALL, I NOTICED THAT THE CAR KEPT FEELING AS THOUGH IT WAS NOT HOLDING THE ROAD SAFELY-- PARTICULARLY AT TURNPIKE SPEED. I LIVE RELATIVELY CLOSE TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHERE I TEACH, SO I DO NOT HAVE TO USUALLY DRIVE THE TURNPIKE, BUT WHEN I DID--THE CAR 'S STEERING OR TIRES ?? FELT OUT OF CONTROL. THEN I NOTICED THAT THE TIRE SENSOR CAME ON AND I SAW THAT I HAD A FLAT TIRE WHEN I WAS AT SCHOOL. THE DEALERSHIP CAME AND TOWED THE CAR IN TO THE SHOP. THEY PATCHED IT. I THOUGHT MAYBE THAT WOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM, BUT THE SENSOR KEPT COMING ON AND GOING OFF. I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP, EXPLAINING THE CAR WAS PULLING TO THE LEFT AND I THOUGHT MAYBE THE STEERING OR TIRES WERE NOT WORKING. THEY WORKED ON IT AGAIN AND I BOUGHT A NEW TIRE FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY BALANCED, ALIGNED, ETC. AND I PAID FOR IT. THEN IT SNOWED AND I NOTICED THAT THE SLIGHTEST AMOUNT OF SNOW INCREASED THE UNSAFE FEELING OF NOT HAVING STEERING CONTROL. I HAVE TIRES THAT ARE BRIDGESTONE/TURANZA TIRES THAT ARE RATED M/S THAT CAME WITH THE CAR PLUS THE NEW TIRE THEY REPLACED IS THE SAME KIND. I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA OF ORANGE AND THEY TESTED AND LEGALLY THEY CAN ONLY GO 60MPH OR HIGHWAY SPEED-LIMIT. THEY KEPT DENYING ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR, & CAME BACK TO SPEAK WITH THE TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE. I WENT IN 3 TIMES PRIOR TO THIS TO SEE IF THEY COULD FIND A PROBLEM, SHE SAID THERE'S NOTHING WRONG AFTER SPECIAL 'TESTS' WERE DONE. AFTER THAT WE TOOK IT IN AGAIN AND THEY PERFORMED AN ALIGNMENT WHICH HELPED A LITTLE DURING REGULAR SPEEDS. BUT I STILL HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, I RECENTLY TOOK IT IN FOR THE RE-CALL, GLAD THAT WAS FIXED, BUT AT 70-80 MPH IF I SHIFT INTO ANOTHER LINE THAT IS PUTTING MY LIFE IN GREAT DANGER! I DRIVE SLOWER BUT I LIVE IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SO SOMETIMES ITS UNSAFE TO BE DRIVING AT SUCH SPEEDS. BOUGHT BRAND NEW (3MILES) COROLLA LE ON FRIDAY, JAN 2, 2009. ON JAN 5, WHILE MAKING A TURN INTO A PARKING LOT, THE CAR COMPLETELY "FROZE": NO STEERING, NO ACCELERATION, NO BRAKING POSSIBLE. ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS CAME ON. I CAME TO A STOP (LUCKILY, THE PARKING LOT WAS SEMI-EMPTY); TURNED OFF THE IGNITION, RESTARTED THE CAR. ALL DASHBOARD LIGHTS WERE OFF- BUT THE "CHECK ENGINE" STAYED ON. IN THE FULL UP POSITION IT IS PRONE TO FALL WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED FACING UP HILL ON A SLOPE AS SLIGHT AS 10 DEGREES COMMON IN PARKING LOTS FOR RAIN RUNOFF. ANY WIND OR PLACING A BAG OF CANNED GOODS IN THE TRUNK CAUSES IT TO FALL STRIKING THE OWNER IN THE HEAD ,NECK OR SHOULDERS. THIS IS HAPPENING MULTIPLE TIMES A WEEK AS I USE THE TRUNK DAILY SINCE THE DAY I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE IN LATE DECEMBER 2008. MY OTHER VEHICLE ( 1993 FORD TAURUS) ALSO USES TORSION BARS BUT EVEN THOUGH IT IS A MUCH HEAVIER TRUNK LID IT IS STABLE IN ALL POSITIONS FROM JUST OPEN TO FULLY OPEN ( 90 DEGREE- STRAIGHT UP). I HAVE COMPLAINED TO TOYOTA AND THEY ARE NOT RESPONSIVE. I HAVE BEEN HIT BY THIS TRUNK LID NUMEROUS TIMES AS I USE THE TRUNK ON A DAILY BASIS. AS AN MALE ADULT I HAVE NOT BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED YET BUT I BELIEVE THIS POSES SERIOUS RISK OF INJURY FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN. THIS TRUNK LID AND TORSION BAR SYSTEM IS POORLY DESIGNED AND HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR SERIOUS INJURY. THE FORCE IS SUFFICIENT THAT ONE OCCASION IT CAUSED A BLEEDING CUT TO MY SCALP UPON IMPACT. IN BOTH INSTANCES, TOYOTA MECHANICS ADVISED THEY COULD NOT IDENTIFY A PROBLEM. ADDITIONALLY, THROUGHOUT THE PAST YEAR, I HAVE EXPERIENCED NOTICEABLE PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, WHICH RAISE CONCERNS ABOUT THE OVERALL INTEGRITY OF THE ELECTRICS. THERE HAS BEEN VERY FREQUENT LOSS OF POWER TO THE POWER DOOR LOCKS AND MANUFACTURER'S RADIO. DURING THE INSPECTIONS, TOYOTA MECHANICS COULD NOT IDENTIFY A PROBLEM IN THIS AREA EITHER. *TR
WITHIN A FEW WEEKS OF PURCHASING MY TOYOTA COROLLA 2009, I NOTICED AT BOTH SLOW AND FAST SPEEDS THE CAR DRIFTS TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT DEPENDING ON THE INERTIA OF THE CAR. THE CAR DOES NOT STAY IN ITS LANE -- I.E. THE CAR DOES NOT DRIVE IN A STRAIGHT LINE -- WITHOUT FULL ATTENTION AND STEADY PRESSURE OF BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL TO CORRECT THE DRIFT. ON HIGHWAYS (FROM 45MPH AND ESPECIALLY FROM 65MPH) THIS PROBLEM IS EXAGGERATED -- I.E. SMALL DRIFTS OR CORRECTIONS CAN RESULT IN SWERVING AND HAVE GREATER POTENTIAL FOR AN ACCIDENT. ON ONE OCCASION I EXPERIENCED DRIFTING OFF THE ROAD AND WAS ABLE TO CORRECT IN TIME. HOWEVER, IT STRUCK ME AS SUCH A DANGER THAT I STOPPED DRIVING THE CAR AT HIGHER SPEEDS AND AVOID HIGHWAYS ALTOGETHER WHEREVER POSSIBLE. 2009 COROLLA S STEERING PROBLEM--DRIVING ON FREEWAY CAR WANDERS ANY ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT THE STEERING DOESN'T HELP I'M CONSTANTLY TRYING TO KEEP MY COROLLA WITH IN THE LANE. I'M MORE WORRIED ABOUT THE STEERING THAN THE GAS PEDAL. I TRADED IN A 2006 COROLLA FOR THIS ONE, NO PROBLEMS WITH THE 2006. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO THE DEALER THEY SAID THAT THE STEERING WAS DESIGNED TO HANDLE THIS WAY. I REPORTED THE STEERING WITH IN A FEW WEEKS AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR. I WENT ON LINE AND FOUND OUT THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE COROLLA. OVER THE YEAR I FOUND MYSELF COMING VERY CLOSE TO GETTING INTO AN ACCIDENT ON MORE THAN ONE OCCASION BECAUSE OF CAR DRIFTING INTO THE OTHER LANE. *TR
TAKATA AIRBAG. AFTER 8 YEARS, THIS POSSIBLY LETHAL COMPONENT HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED AND REPLACED.
THE MANUFACTURER'S SUPPLIED CAR TIRE JACK DOES NOT SAFELY ENGAGE ITS CENTER NOTCH TO THE ( "PINCH WELDED" METAL SHEETS EDGE ) DESIGNATED JACK POINT POSITIONS ( FOR THE FOUR WHEEL LOCATIONS) AS INDICATED IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. ONLY " ONE SIDE", THE INNER HALF OF THE JACK, MAKES CONTACT WITH THE VEHICLE, THUS MAKING LIFTING THE CAR VERY UNSTABLE AND UNSAFE. IN OTHER WORDS, THE NOTCH OF THE SUPPLIED TIRE JACK DOES NOT EVEN MAKE CONTACT WITH THE JACK POINT. I AM AFRAID THIS COULD CAUSE THE CAR TO FALL OFF THE JACK WHILE IT IS BEING LIFTED TO CHANGE A FLAT TIRE WITH THE SPARE TIRE. ( I HAVE TRIED TO LIFT MY CAR WITH THE JACK AT ALL FOUR CORNERS, AND THE SUPPLIED JACK'S CENTER NOTCH DID NOT EVEN CONTACT THE JACK POINT, BUT INSTEAD LEFT INDENTATIONS OF THE INNER HALF OF THE JACK'S "SADDLE" ON MY CAR'S UNDERBODY. IN ADDITION, I HAVE READ COMPLAINTS (ONLINE) OF 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA OWNERS WHOSE CAR ACTUALLY FELL OF THE JACK WHEN IT WAS BEING USED TO LIFT/SUPPORT THE VEHICLE. I ASSUME THIS IS A POTENTIAL DANGER TO SUBSEQUENT OWNERS OF LATER COROLLA MODEL YEARS OF THE SAME DESIGN PLATFORM (2009 TO 2013) IF TOYOTA HAS NOT ALREADY SUPPLIED NEW VEHICLES WITH AN APPROPRIATELY-DESIGNED TIRE JACK OR OTHERWISE MADE IT SAFER TO LIFT THE CAR WITH THE JACK. NOTE THAT I LIFTED MY VEHICLE ON A FLAT, HARD CONCRETE GARAGE FLOOR. IN ADDITION, I BELIEVE I'VE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH TOYOTA SEVERAL YEARS AGO; I CALLED THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER, AND THEY DOCUMENTED MY CONCERNS. TOYOTA HAS NOT RESPONDED TO ME SINCE. STEERING PROBLEMS---AS SOON AS I PULLED MY NEW 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA OFF THE SALES LOTS IN DECEMBER 2008 FROM DAN CAVA TOYOTA I COULD BARELY KEEP IT ON THE ROAD. THE STEERING WAS GOING FROM LEFT TO RIGHT WITHOUT ME TURNING IT. IT WAS BY FAR THE MOST DANGEROUS CAR I HAD EVER DRIVEN AND I USED TO BE A GOODYEAR DEALER. I COMPLAINED 3 DIFFERENT TIMES ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT IT WAS NEVER FIXED. THEY SAID IT WAS THE WIND AND BUCKHANNON TOYOTA JUST LET THE AIR OUT OF THE TIRES WHEN I COMPLAINED THERE. IT WAS A CONTINUOUS PROBLEM AND IF I MADE A SHARP TURN, AT TIME THE WHEELS WOULD GO AS FAR IN THAT DIRECTION THAT THEY COULD GO AND THEY CAR WOULD GO INTO A UNCONTROLLED SKID. MIND U I WAS A GOODYEAR DEALER, I KNOW ABOUT CARS. THEN I NOTICED THAT AS I PUT MORE MILES ON THE CAR IT WAS SLOWLY GETTING BETTER AND BY THE TIME I HAD 3,000 MILES ON THE CAR IT HAD QUIT. IF A LESSER EXPERIENCED DRIVER HAD BEEN DRIVING I AM SURE IT WOULD HAVE CAUSED A CRASH. *TR
I WAS SOMEWHAT RELIEVED TO SEE THAT THERE, IN FACT, IS AN ISSUE WITH THE STEERING ON THE 2009 COROLLA. I BOUGHT MY FIRST TOYOTA IN SEPT. 2008, WHICH WAS A 2009 COROLLA. THAT WINTER, I WAS DRIVING ACROSS THE STATE DURING THE HOLIDAYS. I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE GOING 75 MPH, THE SPEED LIMIT. WITH NO EXPLANATION, ALL OF A SUDDEN I LOST CONTROL OF MY CAR. I HADN'T DONE ANYTHING TO LOSE CONTROL AND THERE WERE NO WEATHER ISSUES. I FOUND MYSELF SKIDDING ACROSS TWO TO THREE LANES OF INTERSTATE TRYING TO GET CONTROL BACK OF MY CAR.. I EASILY COULD HAVE FLIPPED MANY TIMES THROUGH A DITCH AND GOD KNOWS WHAT ELSE. THANKFULLY THERE WERE NO CARS ON EITHER SIDE OF ME WHEN THIS HAPPENED. TO THIS DAY IT HAS HAUNTED ME ON WHAT HAPPENED THAT DAY AS I HAVE NEVER BEEN THAT CLOSE TO WHAT I CONSIDER A "NEAR DEATH" EXPERIENCE. I EASILY COULD HAVE DIED THAT NIGHT AND I REALIZE THAT. I TOOK MY CAR IN THE NEXT DAY TO THE DEALER AND ASKED THEM TO LOOK AT IT. THEY DID AND SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING. PLEASE DO A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. IT IS A SERIOUS ISSUE AS I EXPERIENCED IT MYSELF. I JUST WANTED TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCE IN CASE IT HAD ANY BEARING ON WHETHER A RECALL IS MADE OR NOT. I WILL CLOSE THIS BY SAYING THAT I CAN'T HELP BUT BE EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN TOYOTA. I HAD NEVER OWNED ONE AND BOUGHT ONE BECAUSE IT IS SUCH A RELIABLE BRAND. I'M POSSIBLY FACING MY THIRD RECALL (FIRST WAS BRAKES, SECOND THE ACCELERATOR AND POSSIBLY A THIRD WITH THE STEERING) - ALL THREE MAJOR SAFETY CONCERNS. I WILL SAY THAT I DO APPRECIATE TOYOTA'S WILLINGNESS TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT. IT IS THE CORRECT AND ETHICAL THING TO DO. I WAS DRIVING MY 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA IN DEC. 2008. MY CAR HAD 3000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF MY GOING OFF THE ROAD IN MY CAR. MY DAUGHTER AND I WERE TRAVELING HOME IN SOME VERY COLD WEATHER AFTER CHRISTMAS SHOPPING. I WAS BEING CAREFUL DUE TO THE ROAD BEING ICY IN PLACES. WE HAD WENT UP THIS SMALL INCLINE AND AS WE TOPPED OUT I WENT TO SLOW DOWN BY LIGHTLY PRESSING ON THE BRAKE BEFORE WE GOT TO THE ICY STRETCH OF HIGHWAY, I HAD PLENTY OF TIME TO SLOW DOWN BUT BEFORE I KNEW IT WE WERE ON TOP OF THE ICY HIGHWAY SPINNING OUT OF CONTROL. WE SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AT LEAST A COUPLE TIMES ON THE ROAD WITH NO CONTROL. WE WENT OFF OF THE ROAD, MISSING THE MILE MARKER BY INCHES WITH MY SIDE MIRROR. WE CONTINUED TO GO DOWN A SMALL INCLINE AND THE CAR CAME TO A REST AT A LARGE ROCK AND RABBIT BRUSH. WE WERE ONLY A FEW FEET AWAY FROM GOING INTO A BARB WIRE FENCE WHEN WE CAME TO REST. I NOW HAVE DAMAGE TO MY CAR. THE 2009 COROLLA IS AMAZING HOW THE ICE AND SNOW BUILDS UP ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE OF THE CAR. I KNOW THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE VACUUM ASSIST ALSO. I DO NOT UNDER STAND WHY THIS RECALL IS ONLY FOR CERTAIN STATES THAT A TOYOTA IS REGISTERED IN. THE WAY THE CAR ICES UP UNDERNEATH I CAN SEE HOW THINGS COULD POSSIBLY ICE UP AND NOT WORK CORRECTLY. WE HAVE SOME VERY COLD WEATHER IN OUR STATE OF NM AND WE ARE NOT UNDER THE RECALL. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE THINKING HERE BY TOYOTA. WE DID NOT MAKE A REPORT OF THIS BECAUSE I THOUGHT MAYBE IT WAS SOMETHING I DID. I HAVE PLAYED THIS EXPERIENCE IN MY HEAD SEVERAL TIMES OVER AND OVER AND I KNOW THAT I WAS DRIVING WITH CAUTION AND WAS NOT ON ICE WHEN I APPLIED MY BRAKE. NOW THAT WE HEAR OF ALL THESE RECALLS WE HAVE CONCERN THAT THE CAR MAY BE UNDER A NUMBER OF RECALLS. WE DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE IN THE VEHICLE ANYMORE BUT I CANT JUST PARK MY CAR. I DID MAKE A CALL TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY WHEN I GOT HOME BUT DID NOT MAKE A CLAIM/REPORT THINKING IT WOULD BE CHEAPER TO FIX THAN GO THROUGH THE INSURANCE COMPANY. *TR
WE HAVE A 2009 COROLLA. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN JUMPING RIGHT FROM THE TIME OF PURCHASE WHEN WE MENTION TO DEALERSHIP THEY HAVE TOLD US THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE SEVERAL TIMES. THEY DON'T EVEN DOCUMENT IT UNLESS WE ARE DEMANDING IT. WE HAVE NOT HAD AN ACCIDENT AS OF YET BUT THE SPRING HAS BEEN PUT UNDER THE PEDAL AND IT STILL WANTS TO TAKE OFF AT TIMES. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA COROLLA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED DIFFICULTY STEERING THE VEHICLE. IT REQUIRED GREATER EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. UNEXPECTEDLY, THE VEHICLE GRADUALLY CHANGED DIRECTION AND PULLED TO THE RIGHT WITHOUT ASSISTANCE. WHENEVER TRAVELING 60 MPH OR GREATER, THE FAILURES WOULD OCCUR WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND THEY ROTATED THE TIRES AND PERFORMED A WHEEL ALIGNMENT ON 3 SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER 3 TIMES FOR IDENTICAL FAILURES, BUT THERE WERE NO RESOLUTIONS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 6,000.
