2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHEN I AM BRAKING AND DRIVE OVER A DISRUPTIVE SURFACE: POTHOLE, TRAIN TRACKS, I HAVE EXPERIENCED A BRIEF LOSS OF CONTROL WITH THE BRAKES. BEST DESCRIPTION IS IF DURING A CONTROLLED DECELERATION, YOU EXPECT A CONSISTENT DECREASE OF SPEED. HOWEVER, THE RATE OF DECELERATION WAS INTERRUPTED BY THE POT HOLE, THEN IT WOULD RETURN TO BRAKING. THIS IS A CONSISTENT EVENT IF I AM BRAKING WHILE RIDING OVER A DISTURBED SURFACE. *CN
THE HID HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS TOURING EDITION WILL STOP WORKING WHILE DRIVING. EITHER THE LEFT, RIGHT OR BOTH HEADLIGHTS WILL TURN OFF WITHOUT WARNING. WHEN I TURN THE LIGHTS OFF AND THEN ON AGAIN, BOTH BULBS WORK FINE. THE LIGHTS DO NOT FLICKER WHILE ON OR BEFORE THEY ARE ABOUT TO TURN OFF. I HAVE BEEN PULLED OVER BECAUSE OF THIS AND HAVE ALSO HAD THE LIGHTS TURN OFF WHILE DRIVING IN MOUNTAIN ROADS. THE ARE HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LAMPS. HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LIGHTS DO NOT HAVE A FILAMENT. INSTEAD LIGHT IS CREATED FROM AN ELECTRICAL DISCHARGE BETWEEN TWO ELECTRODES IN A MICRO-ENVIRONMENT OF XENON GAS AND METAL HALIDE SALTS. TOYOTA SENT ME A LETTER TALKING ABOUT THE HID HEADLIGHT PRIUS PROBLEM, BUT DID NOT ACKNOWLEDGE ANY WRONG DOING OR NECESSITY OF A RECALL. I SUSPECT THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE BALLAST THAT CREATES THE ENERGY AND THE BULBS. *TR
I HAVE OWED BOTH A 2005 AND 2007 PRIUS AND HAVE EXPERIENCED TWO PROBLEMS WITH BOTH VEHICLES THAT ARE A SAFETY CONCERN, ALTHOUGH NO ACCIDENT HAS RESULTED FROM THESE PROBLEMS. 1) IN SNOWY CONDITIONS, WHEN TRAVELING UP AN INCLINE, THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM CAN TURN OFF POWER TO BOTH DRIVE WHEELS WITH THE RESULT THAT THE CAR CAN NOT MAKE IT UP THE HILL. GRANTED THIS CAN HAPPEN EVEN TO A MORE CONVENTIONAL CAR, BUT THE PRIUS DOES THIS UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES WHEN OTHER CARS HAVE NO PROBLEM NEGOTIATING THE HILL. THE OWNERS MANUAL CLAIMS THAT THIS IS TO PROTECT THE ELECTRIC ENGINE, HOWEVER, IT SEEMS THAT THERE SHOULD BE AN OVERRIDE OF SOME SORT THAT ALLOWS THE INTERNAL COMBUSTION MOTOR TO TURN THE WHEELS WHEN TRACTION IS POOR. THIS SYSTEM HAS ALSO LED TO CIRCUMSTANCES IN PARKING LOTS DURING SNOW, WHERE IT BECOMES IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE THE CAR EVEN THOUGH OTHER CONVENTIONAL CARS ARE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE THE SNOW WITHOUT A PROBLEM. 2) IN CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE THE PRIUS MUST MERGE QUICKLY INTO TRAFFIC FOR INSTANCE WHEN TURNING INTO BUSY TRAFFIC AT AN INTERSECTION, IF YOU FLOOR THE GAS PEDAL THE CAR INITIAL ACCELERATES, BUT THEN THE ACCELERATION FADES DRAMATICALLY, BEFORE IT RESURGES. THIS CAN BE CIRCUMVENTED BY NOT PRESSING THE GAS PEDAL SO HARD, HOWEVER, THE INSTINCT IS TO STEP ON THE GAS AS HARD AS POSSIBLE. THIS IS NOT ONLY HAIR-RAISING WHEN IT HAPPENS, BUT ALSO COULD LEAD ON AN ACCIDENT. *TR
DRIVERS SIDE HEADLIGHT AND PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT WILL GO OUT RANDOMLY AT ANYTIME BUT SO FAR BOTH HAVEN'T GONE OUT AT ONCE... HAVE BEEN STOPPED BY THE POLICE NUMEROUS TIMES FOR THIS. WHEN I TURN THE HEADLIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN THEN THEY COME BACK ON. THIS HAS HAPPENED IN THE WINTER AND AGAIN THIS SUMMER. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AS IT IS VERY ANNOYING AND DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY AT NIGHT. *TR
DRIVERS' SIDE HEADLIGHT WILL GO OUT AND THEN COME BACK ON. *TR
BRAKING SYSTEM FAILS TO RESPOND UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES OF WET OR UNEVEN PAVEMENT. TRACTION CONTROL SYMBOL LIGHTS UP ON DASH. THIS HAS HAPPENED SINCE NEW. (I FILLED IN AN APPROXIMATE INCIDENT DATE ONLY BECAUSE IT IS A REQUIRED FIELD IN THIS FORM.) *CN
I OWN A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS SPORT EDITION. ONE EVENING ON MY WAY HOME I GOT PULLED OVER FOR HAVING A HEADLIGHT OUT. THAT EVENING AFTER GOING HOME, I GOT IN MY CAR TO HEAD BACK OUT AND MY WIFE FOLLOWED ME INTO THE GARAGE AND NOTICED AS I WAS PULLING OUT THAT MY HEADLIGHTS WERE BOTH ON. THAT IS WHAT ALERTED ME TO THE PROBLEM WHICH IS THAT MY HEADLIGHTS GO OFF RANDOMLY. SOMETIMES IT IS THE PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT, SOMETIMES THE DRIVER'S SIDE. WHEN ONE GOES OUT I CAN USUALLY GET IT TO COME BACK ON BY TURNING MY LIGHTS OFF AND THEN BACK ON. THE WORST CASE OF THIS IS THAT ONE EVENING AFTER LEAVING MY IN-LAWS HOUSE I HAD TO TURN ON MY BRIGHT LIGHTS BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE STREETLIGHTS IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. AS SOON AS I TURNED ON MY BRIGHTS, BOTH LIGHTS WENT OUT COMPLETELY. IT WAS INSTANTLY DARK AND I HAD TO SLAM ON BREAKS. IT TOOK ME A SECOND TO REALIZE WHAT WAS GOING ON. I TURNED MY LIGHTS OFF AND BACK ON AND THEY WORKED LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO GET HOME. IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR ONE OF MY LIGHTS TO GO OUT ON A DAILY BASIS. I BEGAN RESEARCHING THIS AND FOUND NUMEROUS OTHER COMPLAINTS JUST LIKE MINE FROM OTHER PRIUS OWNERS (HTTP://TINYURL.COM/YECDLAE) I TOOK MY CAR TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND THE GUY THERE BASICALLY TOLD ME ASIDE THAT I COULD GET THE BULB REPLACED BUT JUST BETWEEN US THAT WASN'T GOING TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM. HE SAID MY BEST BET WAS TO FILE A COMPLAINT AND HOPE FOR A RECALL. *TR
PASSENGER-SIDE HEADLIGHT INTERMITTENTLY FAILS. PULLED OVER BY POLICE AND ISSUED CITATION WARNING FOR HEADLAMP FAILURE. HEADLIGHT RESUMED WORKING ON THE DRIVE HOME, HAS FAILED AGAIN TODAY. *TR
2007 TOYOTA PRIUS 50,000 MILES WHEN NOTICED THE PROBLEM. 55,000 NOW. PROBABLY HAS BEEN GOING ON LONGER THAN THAT. AT FIRST ONE OR THE OTHER HEADLIGHT WOULD GO OFF, USUALLY WITHIN A FEW MINUTES OF STARTING TO DRIVE. NOTICED IN THE REFLECTION ON CARS AHEAD THAT ONE LIGHT WAS OFF. DISCOVERED THAT TURNING THE HEADLIGHTS OFF AND THEN BACK ON USUALLY FIXES THE PROBLEM AT LEAST UNTIL I GET TO WORK. LUCKILY IT'S WELL LIT MOST OF THE WAY. NOW I HAVE HAD BOTH LIGHTS GO OFF AT THE SAME TIME. IF IT WASN'T FOR THE FOG LIGHTS, I WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TROUBLE. GOT THE NOTICE FROM TOYOTA THAT THEY ARE REIMBURSING CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE ALREADY REPLACED THEM FOR ANY COST OVER $150 PER LAMP. THEY WERE CHARGING PEOPLE $300 PER LAMP AND SOME DEALERS WERE REPLACING THE COMPUTER THAT CONTROLS THEM ALSO. THEY WILL REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS FOR THAT UNNECESSARY EXPENSE TOO. I AM TRYING TO CONVINCE TOYOTA THAT SINCE IT WAS THE BULBS THAT WERE THE PROBLEM, THEY SHOULD REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS FOR THE TOTAL COST OF REPLACING THE LAMPS. MY PLATINUM PROTECTION DOES NO GOOD FOR LAMPS. MY TOYOTA DEALER SAYS THE COST TO REPLACE BOTH LAMPS NOW IS ABBOT $450 INCLUDING LABOR. *TR
HID HEADLIGHT GOES ON AND OFF. ONCE IT GOES OFF, IT COULD BE TURNED BACK ON BY FLICKING THE SWITCH OFF AND BACK ON AGAIN. SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T COME ON AT ALL OR SUDDENLY GOES OFF WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. TW*
TRACTION CONTROL ON THE TOYOTA PRIUS DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY. WHEN TRACTION IS LOST ON A WHEEL, INSTEAD OF TRANSFERRING POWER TO THE OTHER WHEEL, THE TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM COMPLETELY DISABLES POWER TO BOTH WHEELS FOR APPROXIMATELY 1/2 SECOND. THIS IS DANGEROUS IF YOU ARE TRYING TO MERGE INTO TRAFFIC AT AN INTERSECTION AND THE ROAD SURFACE IS ANYTHING OTHER THAN DRY ASPHALT OR CONCRETE. FYI -TIRE CONDITION IS NOT A VARIABLE AS THE VEHICLE CONTAINS 4 WINTER TIRES WITH LESS THAN 200 MILES OF USE. THE TIRES ARE INFLATED PER THE RECOMMENDATIONS ON THE DOOR PLACARD. *TR
PASSENGER SIDE HEADLIGHT WORKING INTERMITTENTLY. LIGHTS UP, THEN GOES OUT, MAY LIGHT UP AGAIN AFTER CAR HAS BEEN OFF FOR A WHILE. WOULD REPLACE EXCEPT NOW AM INFORMED THAT NOT ONLY IS COST OF THE BULB $100 OR MORE BUT $000'S FOR LABOR MAY BE REQUIRED. WAS PERSUADED TO PAY $3000 FOR OPTION PACKAGE IN PART BASED ON CLAIMED SUPERIORITY OF HID LIGHTS. CLEARLY AN ENGINEERING FAILURE THAT BULBS ARE FAILING AND CANNOT BE REPLACED WITHOUT MAJOR REPAIR EXPENSE. IT IS DARK TIME OF YEAR AND NEED CONFIDENCE IN HEADLIGHTS TO DRIVE SAFELY. *TR
HEADLIGHTS ON 2007 PRIUS CONTINUE TO GO OUT DURING DRIVING. I HAVE BEEN ON THE HIGHWAY AND HAD BOTH LIGHTS GO OUT WITHOUT KNOWING IT. I FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN THIS CAR. TOYOTA QUOTES OVER $150 FOR PARTS TO REPLACE EACH LIGHTBULB. WHICH, I AM TOLD, MAY NOT CORRECT THE PROBLEM, IT MAY BE IN THE CONTROLLER. *TR
I PURCHASED A 2007 USED TOYOTA PRIUS IN JUNE 2009. ON TWO OR THREE OCCASIONS IN THE PAST 7 MONTHS, THE BRAKES HAVE FAILED TO RESPOND MOMENTARILY. THIS HAPPENED AT LOW SPEEDS, WHEN BRAKING AROUND A CORNER OR WHEN THE ROAD WAS WET. THE LACK OF BRAKE RESPONSE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A DELAY IN ACCELERATION. THE PROBLEM ONLY LASTED FOR A MOMENT AND WAS ACCOMPANIED BY A WARNING SIGN ON MY DASHBOARD. IN ALL PRIOR INSTANCES, CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE RESUMED AFTER A FEW SECONDS. *TR
TOYOTA PRIUS 2007 WITH HID LIGHTS. ONE OR THE OTHER HEADLIGHT RANDOMLY TURNS OFF, BUT TO THE DRIVER THEY ARE UNAWARE UNLESS BOTH TURN OFF AT THE SAME TIME. TOYOTA DEALER REPLACED BULB TWICE BUT PROBLEM PERSISTED. FINALLY THE SERVICE MANAGER WHO IS ALSO A FRIEND OF MINE, TOLD ME THE PROBLEM IS IN ONE OF THE CIRCUIT BOARDS AND HE REPLACED IT. THAT WAS 5 MONTHS AGO AND IT HAS BEEN FINE SINCE THEN. TOYOTA, THIS SHOULD BE WIDELY KNOWN BY ALL YOUR DEALERS AND FIXED. *TR
THE HEADLIGHTS ON MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HAVE STARTED TO RANDOMLY TURN OFF. SOMETIMES IT'S JUST ONE LIGHT, SOMETIMES IT'S ALL OF THEM. I LIVE ON A WINDY COUNTY ROAD WITH NO LIGHTING. LAST NIGHT I COMPLETED MY DRIVE HOME AT 25 MPH, WITH THE TURN INDICATOR LIGHTING MY WAY. THIS WAS ONE MY WAY HOME FROM THE TOYOTA DEALER, WHERE THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. I'VE SINCE LEARNED THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED EVENT, BUT IS HAPPENING TO PRIUS RATHER COMMONLY. NO ONE HAS BEEN HURT. YET. *TR
2007 PRIUS TOURING. CONSUMER WRITES TO EXPRESS SINCERE DISAPPOINTMENT OVER AUTOMOBILE TRANSACTION. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED SHE WAS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT AND HIS VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. THE CONSUME STATED HE WAS ASSURED THE VEHICLE HE WAS ABOUT TO PURCHASE, HAD NOT BEEN IN ANY PREVIOUS ACCIDENTS. THE CONSUMER LATER DISCOVERED THE VEHICLE HAD INDEED BEEN IN MULTIPLE COLLISIONS, BOTH FRONT AND REAR. THE CONSUMER STATED HE BEGAN TO NOTICE THE HOOD WAS NOT ALIGNED PROPERLY, THE RUBBER ON THE RIGHT FRONT CORNER BETWEEN THE WINDSHIELD AND THE RIGHT QUARTER PANEL WAS DISCONNECTED FROM THE BODY AND THE LOWER FRONT PANEL APPEARED TO BE SLIGHTLY FLARED OUT. *JB
I HAVE OWNED TWO 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. BOTH HAVE BEEN TOTALED DUE TO WHAT I BELIEVE IS A FAILURE OF THE HYBRID DRIVETRAIN TO DISENGAGE DURING EMERGENCY BRAKING. THIS REPORT IS REGARDING THE FIRST VEHICLE. I HAVE FILED A SEPARATE REPORT FOR THE SECOND VEHICLE WHICH I STILL HAVE IN MY POSSESSION. FIRST 2007 PRIUS, PURCHASED NEW IN 2007. ON DEC 9, 2009, TO AVOID A COLLISION, I FULLY PRESSED THE BRAKES WITH FULL FORCE HOWEVER THE PRIUS CONTINUED TO PROPEL FORWARD. I SHOULD EASILY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE IN TIME. AS IT CONTINUED TO PROPEL FORWARD, I COLLIDED WITH THE OTHER CAR. THE SPEED AT THE MOMENT OF IMPACT WAS APPROX 25 MPH. NO AIRBAGS WERE DEPLOYED. THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED A TOTAL LOSS DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE COST OF REPAIRING THE HYBRID SYSTEM. I HAVE THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE ACCIDENT AND THE POLICE REPORT. SECOND TOYOTA PRIUS: I PURCHASED AN EXACT REPLACEMENT USED 2007 PRIUS IN DEC 2009. ON OCTOBER 17, 2015, A CAR STOPPED ABRUPTLY IN FRONT OF MY WIFE WHO WAS DRIVING AT APPROX 40 MPH. SHE REPORTED PRESSING ON THE BRAKES WITH FULL FORCE BUT THAT THE PRIUS CONTINUED TO PROPEL FORWARD. SHE HIT CAR IN FRONT THEN SWERVED TO THE RIGHT AS THE PRIUS CONTINUED TO PROPEL FORWARD. SHE STEERED TO THE LEFT INTO THE CENTER MEDIAN AND THE PRIUS STOPPED. THE CAR THEN CAUGHT ON FIRE. NO AIRBAGS WERE DEPLOYED. I HAVE THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE VEHICLE AND THE POLICE REPORT. I CONTACTED TOYOTA IN NOV 2015. AN INVESTIGATION WAS OPENED. A TOYOTA 'FIELD TECHNICAL SPECIALIST' INSPECTED THE VEHICLE. I SIGNED AN 'EDR CONSENT FORM' FOR TOYOTA TO READ ANY DATA FROM THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER DUE TO THE FIRE, THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO READ ANY DATA. ON JANUARY 26, 2016 I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM A LEGAL CLAIMS ADMINISTRATOR AT TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, USA, INC., STATING 'OUR INSPECTION WAS UNABLE TO CONFIRM ANY EVIDENCE OF A MANUFACTURING OR DESIGN DEFECT IN YOUR VEHICLE'.
2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HID HEADLAMP FAILURE. THIS MANUFACTURER INSTALLED HID LIGHTS IN MY PRIUS THAT COST MUCH MORE THAN THE STANDARD LIGHT AND IS SUPPOSED TO LAST THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE FAILED WITHOUT ANY INDICATOR INSIDE (A POLICEMAN ALERTED ME). THE EXPECT LIFE OF THESE LAMPS IS CLEAR WHEN ONE CONSIDERS THE DEALER MUST REMOVE THE FRONT BUMPER TO REPLACE THEM. DEALER DENIED KNOWLEDGE THAT THIS WAS A FREQUENT ISSUE YET PRIUSCHAT FORUM ON THE INTERNET HAS OVER 60 PAGES DESCRIBING THIS AND I ALSO FOUND THE FOLLOWING LINK: HTTP://WWW.AUTOWEEK.COM/ARTICLE/20090701/CARNEWS/907019991#IXZZ0ZUZARHGK DEALER ENDED UP CHARGING ME $480 TO REPLACE TWO LIGHT BULBS! I HAVE REGISTERED A CASE WITH TOYOTA. ALSO THE DEALER LIED AS IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SERVICE VISIT HE SAID IT WAS NOT A COMMON PROBLEM THAT HE WAS A AWARE OF YET WHEN I WAS LEAVING I ASKED HIM WHY HE REPLACED JUST THE BULBS AND NOT ANY ELECTRONICS AND HE SAID "BECAUSE THEY HAVE LEARNED FROM EXPERIENCE WHEN THIS HAPPENS TO JUST REPLACE THE BULBS. *TR
WE HAVE REPEATEDLY HAD PROBLEMS WITH ALL OF THE ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS ON THE DASH NOT WORKING ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS COLD. THIS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS WE HAVE NO SPEEDOMETER, GAS GAUGE OR GEAR INDICATOR WHEN THIS HAPPENS. THIS HAPPENS OFTEN WHEN IT IS COLD OR RAINING BUT THERE IS NO PREDICTOR OTHER THAN A COLD TEMPERATURE. IT HAS OFTEN HAPPENED AT NIGHT, AND WE HAVE HAD TO DRIVE HOME WITH THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR DARK. T HAS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY SINCE WE BOUGHT THE CAR NEW. WE HAVE HAD IT AT THE DEALER 5 TIMES FOR REPAIRS AND STILL CONTINUE TO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. WE HAVE ARE VERY UNHAPPY WITH OUR TOYOTA AND WILL NOT BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA. *TR
ON DECEMBER 6, 2009, AUTOMATIC BRAKES KICKED IN AT LOW SPEED COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER A SCREECHING METAL AGAINST METAL SOUND. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID BRAKES WERE FINE. ON DECEMBER 28TH, AGAIN AT LOW SPEED BRAKING FOR A RED LIGHT, APPLIED THE BRAKES AND HEARD A LOUD BANG AND THE CAR LURCHED. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I HAD BEEN REAR-ENDED BUT THERE WAS NO CAR BEHIND ME. DROVE IMMEDIATELY TO THE DEALER. THIS TIME THEY SAID THE BRAKES WERE GRABBING AND THEY CLEANED AND ADJUSTED THE BRAKES. THIS HAPPENED ON A 2007 PRIUS, NOT A 2010 PRIUS, SO I AM WONDERING IF THE BRAKE PROBLEM IS MORE WIDESPREAD THAN IS CURRENTLY ASSUMED. *TR
I AM WRITING TO REPORT TRANSIENT FAILURE OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM IN OUR 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. SINCE MAY 2008 WE HAVE NOTICED EPISODIC ACCELERATIONS DURING LIGHT BRAKING (AT INTERSECTIONS FOR INSTANCE) WHEN THE CAR ENCOUNTERS POT HOLES, GRATES, RAILROAD TRACKS OR SLIPPERY PAVEMENT. WE SEEM TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE MOMENTARILY. ONLY WITH HEAVY BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSION DOES THE VEHICLE COME TO A COMPLETE STOP. UNTIL JANUARY 2010 WE THOUGHT THIS WAS A UNIQUE FEATURE TO OUR VEHICLE AND WE WERE HYPERSENSITIVE TO ITS IDIOSYNCRASIES. UNFORTUNATELY, IN JANUARY 2009 THIS DEFECT LEAD TO A LOW SPEED MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION WHEREIN MY WIFE WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN ANOTHER DRIVER ABRUPTLY PULLED IN FRONT OF HER. NO ONE WAS HURT, THANKFULLY, BUT BOTH VEHICLES WERE DAMAGED. ALL OTHER NEARBY DRIVERS WERE ABLE TO STOP IN TIME AND NO OTHER COLLISIONS OCCURRED. ON DECEMBER 4, 2009 THIS SAME VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN ANOTHER LOW SPEED MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION WHEN A DRIVER AHEAD SUDDENLY STOPPED TO AVOID A PEDESTRIAN. THE PRIUS WAS UNABLE TO STOP IN TIME (EVEN UNDER HEAVY BRAKE PEDAL PRESSURE) AND COLLIDED WITH REAR BUMPER OF THE CAR AHEAD. MORE THAN $5,000 IN DAMAGE OCCURRED TO THE PRIUS ALONE; THOUGH NO ONE WAS HURT. IN BOTH INSTANCES NEARBY AND SUBSEQUENT VEHICLES EXPERIENCED NO PROBLEMS STOPPING. THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF ICE OR SLIPPERY PAVEMENT EITHER TIME. FURTHERMORE, NEITHER MY WIFE NOR I HAVE EVER BEEN INVOLVED IN ACCIDENTS IN THE PAST OR WITH OTHER CARS. WE DIDN'T RECOGNIZE THAT THIS COULD BE A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT UNTIL COMPLAINTS TO THE NHTSA BECAME PUBLIC AND WIDELY DISCUSSED IN DECEMBER 09 & JANUARY '10. ON FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2009 AT ABOUT 4:15 PM, I HAD A SUDDEN ACCELERATION INCIDENT WITH MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. I HAD NOT HAD ANY PRIOR DIFFICULTY WITH THIS VEHICLE IN THE APPROXIMATELY 34,000 MILES I HAD DRIVEN SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW. HOWEVER AT THIS TIME WHEN I TRIED TO BACK THE CAR ABOUT 50 FEET BACKWARDS INTO A MOTEL PARKING SPOT (ACTUALLY THERE WERE 3 OPEN SPOTS IN A ROW), IT RESPONDED VERY ABNORMALLY. I STARTED THE CAR, PUT IT IN REVERSE AND GENTLY APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE GAS PEDAL. INSTEAD OF CREEPING BACKWARDS AT ~5 MPH AS I HAD INTENDED, THE CAR "TOOK OFF" AT ABOUT 30-40 MPH. I STOMPED ON THE BRAKES WITH BOTH FEET AND INITIALLY DIDN'T SLOW DOWN. I FELT AN IMPACT AS MY CAR GRAZED A PARKED VEHICLE. MY CAR JUMPED OVER THE CURB AT THE PARKING LOT EDGE, PASSED OVER SOME SHORT BUSHES AND ENTERED A CULVERT. SOMEHOW I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE CAR AND IT CARVED A 180 DEGREE CURVE AND CAME TO A HALT ABOUT 75 FEET AFTER IT PASSED INTO THE CULVERT. FORTUNATELY I DID MAKE THIS SHARP TURN SINCE THERE IS A 4 LANE HIGHWAY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CULVERT. THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND ONLY SLIGHT DAMAGE TO THE OTHER CAR, BUT AN ESTIMATED $7000 OF BODY DAMAGE TO MY CAR. THE POLICE WERE CALLED AS WELL MY INSURANCE COMPANY. THE OWNER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE WAS LOCATED. MY CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. SINCE THAT TIME, THE LOCAL TOYOTA REGIONAL OFFICE SENT OUT A REPRESENTATIVE WHO INSPECTED MY CAR AND "DURING A ROAD TEST NO ABNORMAL BRAKING OR ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WERE FOUND." I HAVE SINCE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH TOYOTA USA IN TORRANCE , CA. I HAVE SPOKEN WITH A "CASE REPRESENTATIVE" WHO HAS NOT BEEN HELPFUL. FINALLY AFTER 5 OR 6 PHONE CALLS, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE ADDRESS OF THE LEGAL DEPARTMENT. I WROTE THEM A LETTER ON JANUARY 20 AND HAVE HEARD NOTHING FROM THEM. I ALSO CALLED AND LEFT MESSAGES ON FEBRUARY 2 AND 4. AS A PHYSICIAN INTERESTED IN PUBLIC HEALTH I DON'T WANT MY FAMILY OR ANYONE ELSE TO DRIVE THIS CAR. 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HEADLIGHT REPLACEMENTS. *TR
I WAS IN A 2007 PRIUS ENTERING A CROSS STREET AND WAS HIT BROAD-SIDE ON THE LEFT DRIVERS SIDE FROM THE MIDDLE OF MY CAR TO THE LEFT FRONT END. THE DAMAGE WAS SEVERE AND I WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL SUFFERING FROM CUTS AND SEVERE BRUISES TO MY RIBS AND BACKSIDE. THE SIDE CURTAINS DID NOT DEPLOY AND I WAS TOLD BY TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS THAT I WAS NOT HIT HARD ENOUGH. I AM NOT TOTALLY RECOVERED FROM THIS ACCIDENT AS YET AND IT WILL PROBABLY TAKE A FEW MORE WEEKS. SINCE EARLY DECEMBER 2009, MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HAS HAD A SAFETY PROBLEM WITH THE HID HEADLIGHTS GOING OUT INTERMITTENTLY, USUALLY ONLY ONE SIDE AT A TIME, BUT SEVERAL TIMES BOTH HAVE GONE OUT AT THE SAME TIME. I LIVE JUST OFF A DARK, WINDING ROAD, AND TWICE BOTH OF THE LIGHTS WENT OUT AT THE SAME TIME, LEAVING ME TOTALLY IN THE DARK. I WAS ABLE TO FLIP THEN OFF AND BACK ON TO NARROWLY AVOID A POTENTIAL FATAL ACCIDENT. I HAVE BEEN STOPPED BY THE GA HIGHWAY PATROL AND GIVEN A WARNING DUE TO THE DRIVER SIDE HEADLIGHT NOT WORKING AT DUSK ONCE. HAD IT BEEN DARK ALREADY, THE OFFICER WOULD HAVE TICKETED ME HE SAID. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE THAT REQUIRES THE NHTSA TO INVESTIGATE THOROUGHLY WITH PRIUS OWNERS. THERE ARE SEVERAL BLOGS ON THE INTERNET REPORTING THIS PROBLEM AND COMPLAINING ABOUT THE EXORBITANT COST THAT TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS CHARGE TO "FIX" THE PROBLEM (FROM $800 TO $1800), ONLY TO FIND THAT THE PROBLEM IS REPEATED WITHIN A YEAR OR TWO. THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SAID THAT MY "REPAIR" WOULD BE ABOUT $1,100, BUT I DECLINED BECAUSE I FEEL THAT THIS IS AN INHERENT DEFECT IN THE HEADLIGHTS THEMSELVES, THE WIRING HARNESS, OR THE COMPUTER MODULE (OR POSSIBLY ALL OF THEM) THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE FIXED BY THROWING MONEY AT IT NOW. I BEG YOU TO INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE AND CONSIDER MAKING TOYOTA ISSUE A GENERAL RECALL DUE TO THE HEADLIGHTS ISSUE. SOMEONE IS GOING TO BE KILLED ONE DAY, IF IT HASN'T ALREADY HAPPENED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE ENTIRE HEADLIGHT SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AND THE CONTACT HAD NOT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO BE TOLD FIXING EITHER LIGHT WOULD BE $350 A PIECE BECAUSE THEY ARE SPECIAL HID LIGHTS AND I'M 2,000 MILES OVER WARRANTY, SO TOO BAD. ON 11/29/09 IN THE AFTERNOON AS I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SLOT IN A TRADER JOE'S PARKING LOT, MY 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS SUDDENLY ACCELERATED FORWARD OVER A CURB, ACROSS A CROSSWALK AND CAME TO REST AGAINST A TREE. SPACE COVERED BY THE CAR FROM ACCELERATION TO THE TREE WAS ABOUT 20-25 FEET. WITNESSES ATTEST THAT I WAS USING MY BRAKE AS THEY SAW THE LIGHTS. I DID NOT HAVE TIME TO ATTEMPT TO SHIFT THE CAR TO "NEUTRAL." THE FLOORMATS WERE NOT INTERFERING WITH THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL (I HAVE PICTURES) AND THE FLOOR MATS WERE HOOKED DOWN. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS HURT INCLUDING ME. THERE WAS SLIGHT DAMAGE TO THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE BUMPER OF AN EMPTY CAR PARKED FACING ME. THERE WAS SUBSTANTIAL DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF MY PRIUS. AS I STATED, THERE WERE TWO WITNESSES WHO GAVE ME THEIR CONTACT INFORMATION AND SAID THEY WOULD BE WILLING TO TESTIFY FOR ME IF NECESSARY. THERE WAS A TRADER JOE WORKER WHO CALLED A TOW TRUCK. THE DRIVER OF THE OTHER VEHICLE WITH THE MINIMAL DAMAGE WAS QUITE UPSET AND CALLED THE POLICE WHO CAME AND WROTE A REPORT. MY CAR HAS NEVER SUDDENLY ACCELERATED BEFORE - THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO HOOMAN TOYOTA IN LONG BEACH. IN RESPONSE TO MY COMPLAINTS TO TOYOTA, A REGIONAL TEAM WAS SENT TO EVALUATE THE ACCELERATOR MECHANISM. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY BEING REPAIRED HOWEVER TOYOTA HAS NOT BEEN IN TOUCH WITH ME TO TELL ME THEIR FINDINGS. TOYOTA'S BEHAVIOR TO MY COMPLAINTS OF SAFETY ISSUES HAS BEEN TO TELL ME THAT THE ONLY PROBLEM THEY HAVE IS FLOORMATS AND THAT MY PROBLEM HAS NEVER BEEN REPORTED BEFORE. TOYOTA WILL NOT REIMBURSE ME FOR THE COST OF REPLACING THE DEFECTIVE BULBS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE MILEAGE EXCEEDS THE FACTORY WARRANTY, THOUGH IT IS STILL WELL WITHIN THE 36 MONTH WARRANTY PERIOD. REPRESENTATIVES FROM BOTH THE SERVICE AND PARTS DEPARTMENT OF MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ASSURED ME THAT THE 'NEW BULBS' DON'T HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM THAT THE ORIGINAL BULBS DID. SO FAR, THAT HAS PROVEN CORRECT. I HAVE READ THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION INTO THIS PROBLEM (PE09019) INTO THIS PROBLEM AND I AM FRANKLY SHOCKED THAT TOYOTA AND PARTICULARLY THE NHTSA DON'T CONSIDER HAVING TO TURN YOUR HEADLIGHTS OFF AND ON AGAIN WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT TO BE A SAFETY DEFECT WORTHY OF RECALL. THE NHTSA SUMMARY STATES THAT TOYOTA HAS ACKNOWLEDGED THE DEFECT:: "TOYOTA CONFIRMED THAT A HEADLAMP COULD EXTINGUISH WHILE DRIVING DUE TO A BULB FAILURE, AND THAT IT COULD BE TEMPORARILY RESTORED BY TURNING THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH ON AND OFF, AND THAT SIMULTANEOUS FAILURE OF BOTH HEADLAMPS WAS RARE AND UNLIKELY." THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION SUMMARY ALSO MENTIONED THE FOLLOWING: "TOYOTA ALSO BRIEFLY DISCUSSED THEIR INTENTION TO CONDUCT A CUSTOMER SERVICE CAMPAIGN TO ADDRESS CONSUMER DISSATISFACTION WITH HID BULB FAILURES. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DRIVER'S SIDE HEADLIGHT FAILED. THE CONTACT ACTIVATED THEN DEACTIVATED THE HEADLIGHT SEVERAL TIMES AND IT STARTED TO FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE BULB NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT PROVIDED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000.

OUR 2007 TOYOTA PRIUS HAS A DEFECT IN THE HEADLIGHT CIRCUITRY. WHEN DRIVING WITH THE LIGHTS ON THE HEAD LIGHTS WILL SHUT DOWN SOMETIMES ONE AT A TIME AND MORE FRIGHTENED BOTH WILL CUT OFF 2 TO 3 TIMES DURING MY COMMUTE HOME. THIS HAPPENED YESTERDAY 3 TIMES ON THE WAY HOME. TO GET THE LIGHTS TO TURN ON I HAVE TO TURN THE SWITCH OFF AND THEN BACK ON. THE LIGHTS WILL USUALLY STAY ON FOR 20 TO 30 MINUTES BUT WILL THEN SHUT OFF AGAIN AT SOME POINT . WE DRIVE A VERY DANGEROUS FREEWAY ( CALIFORNIA 60 BETWEEN MORENO VALLEY, CA AND THE JUNCTION OF INTERSTATE 10) AND ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS THE LIGHTS HAVE CUT OUT TOTALLY CAUSING AN UNSAFE CONDITION AS I WAS DRIVING A VERY WINDY ROAD, IN THE DARK AND SEARCHING FOR THE LIGHT SWITCH TO FLICK IT OFF AND ON. I NOW DRIVE WITH MY HAND ON THE LIGHT SWITCH THROUGH THE BADLANDS SECTION OF CALIFORNIA 60 WHEN MY HAND SHOULD BE ON THE STEERING WHEEL. WE WERE PULLED OVER BY A RIVERSIDE COUNTY SHERIFFS OFFICER AFTER SHE NOTICED THE LIGHTS ERRATICALLY BLINKING ON AND OFF. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD NOT CREATE THE PROBLEM BUT THAT THERE IS A COMPUTER CIRCUIT THAT CONTROLS THE LIGHTS AND THAT IT WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $800. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND SHOULD BE REPAIRED AS A SAFETY HAZARD. I HAVE OWNED MANY VEHICLES AND HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE LIGHTS OTHER THAN A BURNED OUT BULB. I HAVE GONE ONLINE AND THERE ARE OTHER DRIVERS COMPLAINING OF THE SAME ISSUE. PLEASE ASSIST ME BY ADVOCATING ON MY BEHALF WITH TOYOTA TO REPAIR THIS PROBLEM BEFORE AN ACCIDENT OCCURS. *TR THANKS

ONLY TIME I CAN TELL IS WHEN I COME UP BEHIND A VEHICLE AND MY LIGHTS SHINE ON IT. UPON OBSERVING THE INTERNET IT APPEARS THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THEIR PRIUS'. (DON'T WANT TO GET A TICKET OR IN AN ACCIDENT BECAUSE OF IT! IT IS REPORTED THAT $1100 TO $2600 TO GET THIS REPAIRED, HOPEFULLY. *TR
