ALL BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON (BRAKE, ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL) AND POWER ASSIST BREAKING STOPS WORKING AND BRAKES FEEL VERY WEAK. BRAKE ACTUATOR RUNS FREQUENTLY WHEN LIGHTS ARE NOT ON. THERE ARE MANY COMPLAINTS ONLINE AND TOYOTA CLAIMED THEY FIXED THIS ISSUE IN 2009 AND EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR 2009 AND EARLIER, BUT THE PROBLEM IS CLEARLY NOT FIXED.
ON A FEW OCCASIONS WHEN THE CAR IS IN MOTION, WE HAVE DEPRESSED THE BRAKES AND THEY DID NOT GRAB RIGHT AWAY. THIS HAPPENED ONCE GETTING ONTO A HIGHWAY, TWICE ON A CITY STREET, AND ANOTHER TIME ON A COUNTRY ROAD. THERE SEEMS TO BE A SMALL DELAY BEFORE THEY WILL GRAB, CAUSING THE CAR TO FEEL OUT OF CONTROL FOR THAT BRIEF MOMENT. IT FEELS UNSAFE WHEN THIS HAPPENS AND DOESN'T SEEM NORMAL. WE CONTACTED THE SERVICE MANAGER AT TOYOTA TO HAVE THE CAR LOOKED AT, AND HE DID NOT RETURN OUR CALL.
BECAUSE OF,AS DEALERSHIP SAID,THE CAR WAS STALLED AT THE HIGHWAY. I DON'T HAVE ANY STICKER ABOUT RECALL, BUT MOST PRIUS 2010 OWNERS SAID THAT OWNERS RECEIVING NOTIFICATION ABOUT INVERTER PROBLEM. I'M HEADING TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHO OFFERED ME TO FIX THE CAR FOR $3,500. COULD YOU PLEASE TAKE A LOOK, DO I HAVE ANY WARRANTY OR RECALLS ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE PLEASE. THANK YOU.
WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER CAUSING IT TO LOCSE SPEED QUICKLY. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF YOU ARE IN AN AREA WHERE IT IS HARD TO PULL OFF. IT WILL DRIVE 42MPH UNTIL THE BATTERY DIES. THIS IS MORE COMMON THAN MOST ISSUES WITH THIS MODEL. PLEASE MAKE TOYOTA REPLACE THE ENGINES IN THESE VEHICLES. "CHECK HYBRID SYSTEM"
WENT TO SWAP THE LICENSE PLATE IN MY PRIUS AFTER REGISTERING IN NEW STATE. BACK LICENSE PLATE BOLT ON UPPER-RIGHT SIDE UNSCREWED PARTIALLY AND THEN THE BOLT HOUSING DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, THE SCREW CANNOT BE UNSCREWED AND THE LICENSE PLATE CANNOT BE REMOVED. CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY KNEW WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT. SAID THE REPAIR WOULD TAKE ONE HOUR AND COST $110'FOR A BOLT THAT MALFUNCTIONED. THE VEHICLE ISN'T TECHNICALLY STREET LEGAL NOW AND THEY CAN'T SEE ME FOR SEVERAL DAYS. I SAID THAT I DIDN'T THINK A COMPONENT LIKE THAT SHOULD JUST BREAK OFF, AND I WAS TOLD IT MAY HAVE BEEN A RESULT OF THE WRONG BOLT SIZE BEING USED. THAT'S UNLIKELY AS THIS CAR HAS ONLY EVER SEEN TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS AND THAT WAS WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED. VERY DISAPPOINTED AND IT SOUNDS LIKE TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THIS ISSUE.
AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATES. TOYOTA SERVICE TECHIE'S DIAGNOSTIC SHOWED A DISCONNECTED SPIRAL CABLE. TECHIE EXPLAINED THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE HAS ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONS TO THE DRIVER'S AIRBAG MODULE AND THE DRIVER'S AIR BAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN AN ACCIDENT. HE SAID I SHOULD INSTALL A NEW CABLE SPIRAL ASSEMBLY KIT (AKA "CLOCK SPRING"), PART # 8430747020 AT A COST OF NEARLY $1000, INCLUDING OVER $700 FOR THE PART. I DID SOME RESEARCH. PART # 8430747020 WAS INSTALLED IN MANY TOYOTA VEHICLES, AND HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM IN THE COROLLA, MATRIX, HIGHLANDER, TACOMA, RAV4, AND YARIS. SEE SAFETY RECALL E0M (E1M) APRIL 2015, UPDATE 5/12/14. THE PRIUS IS NOT MENTIONED IN THE RECALL, ALTHOUGH MY CAR HAS THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM WITH THE IDENTICAL PART, AND THE TOYOTA SERVICE SUPERVISOR AGREES IT IS THE SAME PROBLEM AND PART. I EXPLAINED THIS TO THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN AND SUPERVISOR, WHO CALLED TOYOTA, AND TOYOTA OFFERED TO COVER 50% OF THE COST OF THE PART, AND NONE OF THE LABOR COST. I ASKED WHETHER THEY COULD DO THE SAME FIX IN MY CAR AS THEY DO ON THE RECALLED VEHICLES, NAMELY INSTALLING PART # 04004-07122, AND THEY DECLINED. SEE TECHNICAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SAFETY RECALL E0M SPIRAL CABLE REPLACEMENT. TOYOTA SHOULD BE RECALLING MY CAR AND FIXING THIS PROBLEM AT THEIR EXPENSE, NOT JUST REDUCING THE COST OF THE PART. SECOND, THEY SHOULD NOT BE REPLACING THIS DEFECTIVE PART WITH THE SAME DEFECTIVE PART. THEY SHOULD DO A FIX THAT WILL LAST. I ASSUME THE FIX THEY'VE DONE ON ALL OTHER VEHICLES, WITH PART # 04004-07122, WOULD WORK FOR MY PRIUS. THEY REFUSE. FYI- THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON AND OFF FOR YEARS, AND SEEN BY TOYOTA DURING THAT PERIOD. THIS PARTICULAR PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED MAY 1, 2017. THEY BELIEVE THE PREVIOUS AIRBAG WARNING LIGHTS WERE UNRELATED TO THIS PARTICULAR ISSUE.
THIS AFTERNOON, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING DOWN A TWO LANE, PAVED STREET AT ABOUT 25 MPH. THE STREET HAS A SLIGHT DECLINE AND SHE BEGAN TO APPLY THE BREAKS TO SLOW DOWN SLIGHTLY. JUST A SECOND OR TWO LATER, SHE HIT A SMALL BUMP IN THE ROAD AND THE CAR ACCELERATED (WHILE SHE HAD HER FOOT ON THE BREAK) FOR A FRACTION OF A SECOND. WE DIDN'T HEAR THE SOUND OF THE ENGINE REVVING. THANKFULLY, THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD AT THIS TIME AND THERE WAS TIME TO PRESS THE BREAK AGAIN. EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION LED TO ENGINE FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT COST OF APPROXIMATELY $5000.00 ALSO EXCESSIVE OIL COST TO CONSTANTLY FILL OIL OVER THE YEARS. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW. AND GOT STUCK WITH IT AS I WAS GOING THROUGH DIVORCE AND NOT WORKING IT WAS UNFORTUNATELY CHEAPER TO PAY FOR A USED ENGINE REPLACEMENT THROUGH TOYOTA. I HAVE SAVED ALL RECEIPTS IN HOPES OF RECUPERATING MONEY IN THE FUTURE
WHEN I AM COMING TO A STOP (BRAKING NORMALLY) AND HIT A BUMP, THE CAR SURGES SLIGHTLY AND THE BRAKES BECOME LESS RESPONSIVE. IT FEELS LIKE I'M FIGHTING THE ENGINE AS IT ACCELERATES AND I'M TRYING TO BRAKE AGAINST IT. RELEASING THE BRAKE AND ATTEMPTING AGAIN SEEMS TO BE A SOLUTION, BUT I OFTEN DON'T HAVE TIME BEFORE REACHING THE INTERSECTION I'M APPROACHING. THIS CONSISTENTLY HAPPENS IN TWO PLACES IN MY DAILY COMMUTE WITH A SLIGHT BUCKLE IN THE ROAD APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION ON CITY STREETS AND COUNTY ROADS.
BOTH LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS DO NOT GO ON AT ALL. WERE WORKING PROPERLY ON WAY TO A DESTINATION AT 9PM, THEN DID NOT GO ON AFTER CAR WAS PARKED AFTER 2 HOURS. THIS HAS NEVER OCCURRED BEFORE. BULBS ARE NOT BURNED OUT, FUSE IS NOT BLOWN. ALL OTHER MECHANISMS ON FUSE WORKING PROPERLY (BACKUP LIGHTS, HORN). PARKING LIGHTS AND HI-BEAMS WORK. VERY DANGEROUS DRIVE HOME, USE OF HI-BEAMS ON SURFACE STREETS NOT SAFE FOR OTHER DRIVERS.
I'VE HAD TWO TOYOTA PRIUS IN MY LIFETIME, A 2005 AND A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS, BOTH HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WHERE THE ENGINE WOULD EAT UP ALL OF MY OIL, I WOULD HAVE AN OIL CHANGE DONE AND LESS THAN 2 WEEKS LATER I WOULD HAVE TO CHECK THE OIL GAUGE ROD AND FIND THAT THE OIL LEVELS WERE BELOW THE BOTTOM LINE, ALMOST EMPTY! THE ENGINE WOULD BE BURNING OIL AT SUCH AN ALARMING RATE THAT I WOULD REPEATEDLY BRING THE VEHICLE TO TOYOTA FOR OIL CHANGES. I'M VERY UNSATISFIED WITH MY TOYOTA PRIUSES. MY CAR IS CURRENTLY AT 166,384 MILES AND THE ENGINE CYLINDER HAS NOW GIVEN WAY AND ALSO THE HYBRID BATTERY. I'VE GONE ONLY TO TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS TO HAVE PRISTINE CONSECUTIVE SERVICE AND NO THIRD PARTY REPAIR FACILITIES HAVE PROVIDED SERVICE. I AM LOCATED IN SOUTHER CALIFORNIA IN SAN DIEGO. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY OTHER TOYOTA PRIUS OWNERS AND IF YOU DO A GOOGLE SEARCH ONLINE AS OF (04/10/17) "TOYOTA PRIUS ENGINE OIL CONSUMPTION" YOU'LL FIND MANY FORUMS WITH "EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION" FROM MANY OTHER USERS. ONCE YOU REACH PAST THE 140,000 MILE MARK, YOUR CAR IS PRETTY MUCH DONE. CONSIDER BUYING A NEW ONE. TOYOTA PRIUSES AND THEIR ENGINEERS HAVE TO COME UP WITH A WAY TO SATISFY CURRENT AND FUTURE PRIUS OWNERS AS MANY OF US WILL FIND THAT THERE WILL BE MANY PROBLEMS AND ISSUES DOWN THE ROAD.
DRIVING DOWN HIGHWAY AT POSTED SPEED LIMIT (75MPH), I TRIED TO SLOW DOWN DUE TO TRAFFIC AND NOTICED MY CARS ABILITY TO BRAKE WAS SEVERELY COMPROMISED. I THEN NOTICED MY CARS BRAKES, ABS, MASTER WARNING AND VSC LIGHTS HAD CAME ON. GIVEN THAT MY CAR HAS 103K MILES ON IT, I FIGURED IT IS TIME FOR A BRAKE PAD SERVICE. WITH THE LIMITED BRAKING ABILITY, I DECIDED TO MAKE THE SHORT DRIVE TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR BRAKE SERVICE. AFTER THE DEALER INSPECTED MY CAR, A REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THAT IT IS NOT THE BRAKE PADS THAT ARE CAUSING THE LIGHTS IN YOUR DASH TO GO ON BUT RATHER THE BRAKE BOOSTER. THEY ADVISED ME THAT IT IS NOT RECOMMENDED THAT I DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE UNTIL THE ISSUE IS REMEDIED BY REPLACING THE BRAKE BOOSTER AT A COST OF OVER 2K. I HAD TO ALSO INCUR THE COST OF A RENTAL SINCE THE BOOSTER WAS NOT IN STOCK AND WOULD TAKE OVER THE WEEKEND TO RECEIVE. I WAS TAKEN ABACK BY THE TOTAL COST OF THE SERVICE BUT HAD NO CHOICE AND PROCEED TO GET IT REPAIRED. UPON RECEIVING MY CAR A FEW DAYS LATER, I DROVE TO WORK AND UPON MY RETURN HOME, THE ISSUE REPEATED ITSELF WITH ALL THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH LIGHTING UP AND THE CARS BRAKING ABILITY WAS AGAIN COMPROMISED. EXTREMELY IRATE, I DROVE DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER AND UPON INSPECTING THE CAR THEY TOLD ME THAT IT IS NOW THE ACCUMULATOR THAT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS TIME THE DEALER ABSORBED THE COST OF OVER 3K TO REPLACE IT. I RESEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR ANY KNOWN RECALLS AND FOUND THE ISSUE WAS BEING ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA WITH A RECALL HOWEVER MY CARS VIN WAS NOT PART OF IT. IT IS MY HOPES THAT YOU MAKE TOYOTA AWARE OF THE SAFETY ISSUE AND INITIATE A RECALL ON ALL 2010 PRIUS MODELS AND NOT JUST SOME. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO GET THE COST I INCURRED WITH THIS SAFETY ISSUE REIMBURSED AT SOME POINT.
THE MIDDLE AT TIMES AND THE SEAT BELT DIRECTLY BEHIND THE DRIVER DO NO STAY IN AND LOCK. I HAVE TAKEN IT BACK UP TO CARMAX WHERE I PURCHASED IT AND THE GUY SAID, "OH THE KIDS HAD SOME CANDY IN IT" HAHAHAHAHA NO SIR THATS WHERE MY ELDERLY MOTHER SITS WHEN I DRIVE HERE AROUND TOWN TO DO HER SHOPPING. I WAS VERY UNIMPRESSED THAT THEY DIDNT FIX SUCH A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. PLEASE HELP!
TURNING LEFT AFTER A STOP SIGN ON A SINGLE LANE STREET (30 MPH), SUDDENLY THE DASH BOARD STARTED FLASHING 'STOP CAR' WARNING AND CONTINUES BEEPING. ALSO, REALIZED THAT APPLYING BREAK PADDLE DID NOT HELP A BIT. IT WAS HARD TO PRESS THE PADDLE THAT MOVED A LITTLE BIT. GOING STRAIGHT ABOUT 300 FT. CAR REDUCED TO IDLING SPEED. TURNING LEFT INTO A PARKING LOT OF A SCHOOL, I TRIED STOPPING IT INTO A PARKING SPACE. BREAK DID NOT WORK AGAIN. SO, CAR STOPPED AFTER HITTING THE CURB. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WAS CALLED AND ARRANGEMENTS WERE MADE TO TOW AWAY CAR FROM SCHOOL'S PARKING LOT. THE CAR DID NOT STOP WHEN TOWING PERSON TRIED TO REVERSE DRIVE. SOMEHOW HE MANAGED TO MANEUVER IT ON A TOW TRUCK. I WAS INFORMED BY DEALERSHIP THAT BREAK ASSIST SYSTEM (BAS), BUILT INTO PRIUS HYBRID MODEL, FAILED. THE SYSTEM COMPRISES OF ACCUMULATOR & PUMP THAT ASSISTS TO STOP THE CAR WHEN BREAK PADDLE IS PRESSED. THOUGH CAR WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, BREAK SYSTEM AND ASSOCIATED COMPONENTS WERE NOT COVERED. REPAIR COST OVER $1900 TO REPLACE BAS. PURPOSE OF THIS COMPLAINT TO HIGHLIGHT NHTSA OF THE CRITICAL FAILURE OF PRIUS DESIGN TO ALLOW BREAK SYSTEM TO FAIL IN SUCH A COLOSSAL WAY. THE CAR COULD NOT BE STOPPED. THIS IS A SERIOUS DRIVING SAFETY CONCERN. ANY FAILURE OF BREAK ASSIST COMPONENT SHOULD NEVER EVER TAKE AWAY THIS CRITICAL CONTROL. INTENT OF THIS COMPLAINT IS FOR THE PUBLIC SAFETY, HAVING TOYOTA INFORMED OF THE INCIDENT. IT HAS BEEN VERY DISAPPOINTING THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT GIVEN ANY RESPONSE EXCEPT GIVING A CASE NUMBER BY A CUSTOMER SERVICE CENTER. REQUEST NHTSA TO LOOK INTO THE INCIDENT AND MOST IMPORTANTLY REVIEW DESIGN OF BREAK ASSIST SYSTEM FOR PRIUS IN THE INTEREST OF PUBLIC SAFETY AND DEFENSIVE DRIVING. PLEASE ADVISE SHOULD NHTSA REQUIRE FURTHER DETAILS OR INCIDENT NARRATIVE.
THE HEADLIGHT BURN OUT VERY FREQUENTLY AND MOST RECENTLY THE SHOP INFORMED ME THAT THE LIGHT DOES NOT STAY IN THE ASSEMBLY BECAUSE THE HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLY HAS MELTED. I AM FORCED TO DRIVE WITHOUT HEADLIGHTS AND THIS IS VERY UNSAFE. NEW HEADLIGHT ASSEMBLIES COST AT A MINIMUM OF $100 EACH AND I AM HAVING PROBLEMS SHIPPING THE ITEMS TO GUAM WHERE I RESIDE.
MY TOYOTA PRIUS IS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER, AS I JUST GOT IT INSPECTED FOR THE NY STATE ANNUAL INSPECTION ON 3/23/2017. LAST NIGHT, 4/2/2017, I DROVE MY CAR TO A RESTAURANT AND PARKED IT THERE. WHEN I GOT BACK INTO MY CAR TO LEAVE AFTER MY MEAL, I TURNED ON THE IGNITION AND SWITCHED THE HEADLIGHTS TO TURN ON WHILE THE CAR WAS STATIONARY AND PARKED, BUT BOTH APPEARED TO HAVE BURNED OUT SUDDENLY. ONLY THE RUNNING LIGHTS SWITCHED ON. TO DRIVE HOME, I HAD TO USE MY HIGH BEAMS. I TRIED TURNING THE CAR ON AND OFF, AND SWITCHING THE HEADLIGHTS ON AND OFF WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED, IDLE AND IN MOTION TO SEE IF THEY'D TURN BACK ON, BUT THEY WOULDN'T. WHEN I GOT HOME, I DID SOME RESEARCH AND IT SEEMS THAT THIS IS A LONG-STANDING PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL OF CAR, AS WELL AS PRIUSES MADE IN THE YEARS PRIOR. *TAKATA RECALL I WAS INVOLVED IN A MAJOR CAR ACCIDENT DURING LUNCH HOUR ON THE 405 SOUTH FWY IN LOS ANGELES, CA. I WAS STRUCK BY A SEMI TRUCK WHO WAS MERGING INTO MY LANE AND WHILE I TRIED TO GET OUT OF HIS WAY BY SPEEDING UP. I WAS CLIPPED BY THE TRUCK AND MY CAR CAREENED INFRONT OF THE TRUCK AND WAS PUSHED BEFORE HE APPLIED HIS BRAKES. MY CAR THEN SPUN OUT OF CONTROL ACROSS ALL FWY LANES. I WAS HIT BY TWO OTHER ON COMING CARS BEFORE COMING TO A STOP IN THE CARPOOL LANE. ALL CARS INCLUDING THE TRUCK WERE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65-70 MPH BASED ON THE POLICE REPORT. MY FOOT WAS ON THE GAS THE ENTIRE TIME AS I SPUN OUT OF CONTROL. MY COMPLAINT IS REGARDING THE AIRBAGS. NONE OF THE SIDE OR FRONT AIRBAGS DEPLOYED AT THE TIME OF ALL IMPACTS. I HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDANT INSPECTION COMPANY AFTER CONTACTING TOYOTA. I HAVE YET TO HEAR BACK FROM TOYOTA EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE HAD THE REPORT FOR ALMOST TWO MONTHS. I FINALLY RECEIVED THE REPORT FROM THE INSPECTOR AFTER THREATNING TO HAVE MY ATTORNEY CONTACT THEM. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO READ THE FINDINGS OF THE REPORT SINCE ITS ALL TECHNICAL ENGINEERING. I AM ATTACHING THE REPORT AND HOPE THAT SOMEONE IN YOUR DEPARTMENT CAN REVIEW IT AND FOLLOWUP. THANK YOU
LEAK OF NITROGEN IS RELEASED INTO THE BRAKE FLUID, THE BRAKE PEDAL MAY HAVE REDUCED HYDRAULIC PRESSURE. UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES, THIS CONDITION COULD AFFECT STOPPING DISTANCE AND INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
2010 TOYOTA PRIUS FAILED AN OIL ENGINE CONSUMPTION TEST AT 98,000 MILES. IT BURNED 3 QUARTS IN 1,100 MILES. TOYOTA HAS SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED IN NOVEMBER 2016 TO COVER THIS CAR BUT INHERENTLY, IT ISN'T COVERED. I HAVE SERVICE RECORDS THAT THIS WAS HAPPENING IN JUNE 2015 AT 82000 MILES, BEFORE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN SEPT 2016. TOYOTA WILL ONLY COVER HALF OF $3000 COST OF REPAIR. ISSUE APPEARS TO BE WIDESPREAD, ACROSS MANY MODELS FROM WHAT I'VE READ ONLINE AND EXPERIENCED IN THE DEALERSHIP. TOYOTA'S FAILURE TO ADDRESS THIS SITUATION WHEN IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR YEARS IS HIGHLY ALARMING, CONSIDERING IT AFFECTS A MAJOR PART OF THE ENGINE.

THE CONTACT'S CHEST AND FACE STRUCK THE STEERING WHEEL. THE CONTACT RECEIVED INJURIES TO THE CLAVICLE AREA, SHOULDERS, FACE, EYES, HEAD/BRAIN, AND NECK AREA. EXTENSIVE MEDICAL ATTENTION WAS NEEDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TOWED; HOWEVER, A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE AIR BAG SENSOR WAS MISSED BY A COUPLE OF MILLIMETERS, WHICH PREVENTED THEM FROM DEPLOYING. THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP ASSEMBLY FAILED, WHICH LEFT ME WITH NO BRAKES AND IN A LIFE-THREATENING SITUATION. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND I NARROWLY AVOIDED A BAD ACCIDENT ON A CITY STREET.
THE BRAKE ACTUATOR FAILED ON OUR 2010 PRIUS III MANUFACTURED IN OCTOBER 2010. TOYOTA IS COVERING PROBLEMS WITH THIS SAME BRAKE ACTUATOR FOR 2010 PRIUS MANUFACTURED BETWEEN MARCH 2009 AND EARLY OCTOBER 2009. MY VIN DID NOT FALL INTO THAT DATE RANGE EVEN THOUGH MINE WAS MANUFACTURED IN OCTOBER 2009, SO THE BRAKE DEFECT SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO BEYOND THE EARLY OCTOBER 2009 MANUFACTURED DATE. THE SYMPTOMS TO THIS PROBLEM WERE THE BRAKE, ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON, NO REGENERATIVE BRAKING AND THE BRAKING DISTANCE INCREASED.
ON PICKING UP MY PRIUS AFTER ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS 3 QUARTS LOW IN ENGINE OIL. I WAS STUNNED AS I HAD HAD NO WARNING OF LOW OIL PRESSURE OR LOSS OF PERFORMANCE. THE DEALER IS CONDUCTING AN "OIL CONSUMPTION TEST" TO MEASURE HOW MUCH OIL WILL BE CONSUMED IN 1200 MILES. THE ESTIMATED REPAIR COST WAS $2000, BUT MY HUSBAND WHO IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT ENGINES DOESN'T BELIEVE THE SUGGESTED REPAIR WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. I HAVE ONLY RECENTLY BECOME AWARE THAT THIS IS A PREVALENT PROBLEM WITH LATE MODEL TOYOTAS, NOT JUST PRIUS. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT AND THE SERVICE TECH WE SPOKE WITH WERE CAGEY WHEN ASKED HOW FREQUENTLY THEY HAVE SEEN THIS PROBLEM. I BELIEVE TOYOTA IS VERY AWARE OF THE ISSUE, BUT ARE WILLFULLY NOT ADDRESSING A REMEDY.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THERE WOULD BE NO REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIRS BECAUSE THE RECALL HAD EXPIRED. THE VIN TOOL FOUND NO RECALLS FOR THE VEHICLE. THE RECALL INFORMATION WAS NOT PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 111,226.
I KEEP REPLACING THE LOW BEAMS. THEY DO NOT LAST LONGER THAN 3 MONTHS BEFORE THEY BURN OUT AGAIN. I'M BUYING HIGH END REPLACEMENT BULBS THAT SHOULD BE LASTING YEARS. I ONLY RECENTLY LEARNED THE RECALL AND THE FAILURE WERE RELATED AND I BELIEVE THE FAILURE COULD REPEAT WITH POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC RESULTS.

IT SEEMS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT THIS IS JUST A COINCIDENCE. FORTUNATELY THE FIRST TIME IT HAPPENED I WAS CLOSE TO HOME BUT THIS TIME I WAS NOT.
MY 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS IV HAS 98,731 MILES ON IT. THE ENGINE AND POWER TRAIN MALFUNCTIONED DURING A COLD START SO I HAD TO TAKE IT INTO THE TOYOTA DEALER. IT HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP ON A FLAT-BED TOW TRUCK BECAUSE THE CAR TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION WAS LOCKED IN THE DRIVE POSITION, WOULD NOT GO INTO NEUTRAL, AND THE CAR ENGINE WOULD NOT START REV ABOVE AN IDLE. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO START IT THE ENGINE ACTED LIKE IT WAS MISFIRING VERY BADLY AND RATTLED VERY BADLY. IT SOUNDED LIKE THE ENGINE WAS NOT GETTING ANY OIL CIRCULATION SO I DIDN'T ATTEMPT ANY MORE COLD STARTS. I COULD NOT GET THE ENGINE INTO NEUTRAL OR ANY OTHER GEAR SO I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. WHEN THE CAR WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP I WENT THROUGH MY RECORDS AND FOUND A LETTER TITLED 'WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM NOTIFICATION - ZF3' THAT I HAD RECEIVED SEVERAL YEARS PREVIOUS. THE DOCUMENT EXTENDED MY PRIMARY COVERAGE UNTIL 31 MARCH 2017 DUE TO A POTENTIAL FAULTY EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION (EGR) VALVE. 'A FAULTY EGR VALVE WOULD CAUSE THE ENGINE TO ROUGH IDLE/RATTLE FROM THE TRANSAXLE AT A COLD START DUE TO A STICKING EGR VALVE. IF THIS OCCURS, THE VEHICLE MAY ILLUMINATE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND SET DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DTC P0401. THE SYMPTOMS MY CAR EXPERIENCE DURING COLD STARTS BEGIN AROUND 92,000 MILES BUT NO 'CHECK ENGINE LIGHT' OR 'DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE' EVER ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. AFTER 92,000 MILES IT ONLY HAPPENED OCCASIONALLY, AND ALWAYS DURING COLD STARTS. I TOOK MY CAR IN FOR A SERVICE AND TOLD THE DEALERSHIP WHAT WAS HAPPENING, BUT THEY COULD NOT DIAGNOSE ANY PROBLEM.

IT BEGAN WITH A FRONT DRIVER-SIDE HEADLIGHT NOT WORKING, THEN BOTH HEADLIGHTS NOT WORKING - EACH WAS REPLACED WHEN NOTICED THEY WERE NOT WORKING. THE MOST RECENT TIME, 5 MONTHS AFTER THE LAST REPLACEMENT, I NOTICED ONE HEADLIGHT WAS OUT AGAIN, THEN, WHILE IN PARK, WITH THE CAR STILL ON, I TURNED THE LIGHTS OFF THEN ON AGAIN, AND AFTER THAT BOTH HEADLIGHTS AND ONE DAYTIME RUNNING WILL NOT WORK. NEEDLESS TO SAY THIS IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS.

EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION AFTER HAVING MY OIL CHANGED AT THE DEALERSHIP AT 100K MILES, I LEFT ON A CROSS-COUNTRY TRIP. DURING THE TRIP, THE LOW OIL PRESSURE SIGNAL FLASHED ON MY DASHBOARD. UPON PULLING OVER AND CHECKING THE OIL, I FOUND THERE WAS NO OIL IN THE ENGINE AT ALL. I ADDED 4 QUARTS CHECKING THE LEVEL IN INCREMENTS WITH THE DIPSTICK, AND CONTINUED. I HAD TO ADD AN ADDITIONAL QUART OF OIL TO THE ENGINE OVER THE FOLLOWING WEEK, UNTIL RETURNING HOME. UPON RETURNING, THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO ACCEPT ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ISSUE AND INFORMED ME THAT I NEEDED NEW PISTONS AND RINGS. THEY DID NOT INFORM ME THAT THIS IS A RECURRING ISSUE WITH MY GENERATION OF PRIUS AND WERE QUITE FIRM THAT IT WAS NOT THEIR PROBLEM. THERE IS NOT REASON THAT A TOYOTA WITH 100,000 MILE ON IT SHOULD RANDOMLY START BURNING EXCESSIVE AMOUNTS OF OIL WITHIN A FEW THOUSAND MILES OF AN OIL AND FILTER CHANGE. ALL OF THE MAINTENANCE IS PERFORMED AT THE DEALERSHIP AT THE SPECIFIED INTERVALS, AND I WOULD EXPECT THAT TOYOTA WOULD STAND BEHIND A TOYOTA THAT IS MAINTAINED PER TOYOTA SPECIFICATIONS. *TR

WHEN IT DOES THIS I CANNOT RELEASE THE CAR FROM PARK MODE LEAVING ME UNABLE TO USE REVERSE OR DRIVE. DEALER EXAMINED CAR TO EXPLAIN THAT BULBS WORKING PROPERLY HOWEVER THE HOUSING FOR THE LOW BEAM LIGHTS NEED REPLACING
AFTER PROVIDING NOTICE OF NHTSA RECALL NO. 16V-487 TOYOTA SUBSEQUENTLY REFUSED TO REPLACE THE RETENTION BRACKETS ON THE CURTAIN SHIELD AIR BAG INFLATORS SUBJECTE TO SAID RECALL. THE RECALL IS CLEAR THAT THE RETENTION BRACKETS SHOULD BE PROVIDED AT NO CHARGE.
CAR PURCHASED NEW AND SERVICED AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIP EVERY 10,000 MILES USING 0-20W SYNTHETIC OIL. AT AROUND 106,000 MILES I NOTICED THE DISPLAY FLASHING SOMETHING BUT COULD NOT, AT THAT TIME, READ WHAT THE WARNING WAS. IT SEEMED TO HAPPEN GOING AROUND CURVES, TURNING ETC. FINALLY, AT MAYBE 107,000 MILES, THE WARNING STAYED ON LONG ENOUGH TO SEE THE LOW OIL WARNING. TOOK THE CAR IN AT 108,000 (NO OIL ON DIPSTICK AT THAT POINT) AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CHECKED FOR LEAKS AND FOUND NONE. I WAS LIGHTLY ADMONISHED BY SERVICE FOR DRIVING WITHOUT OIL. FAIR ENOUGH, I THOUGHT AT THE TIME. I WAS SLIGHTLY CHAGRINED AS I HAVE ALWAYS RELIGIOUSLY HAD MY OIL CHANGED (OR CHANGED IT MYSELF) ON ALL MY CARS AT THE RECOMMENDED INTERVALS WITH NO SIGNS OF A PROBLEM. THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENT RECOMMENDED THAT I MONITOR OIL USAGE. I DID, AND TO MY SURPRISE 2,500 HUNDRED MILES LATER, I HAD TO ADD A FULL QUART. THEN 1950 MILES LATER, ANOTHER QUART. YESTERDAY, ANOTHER QUART AT 1048 MILES. VERY DISAPPOINTED AS THE CAR HAS BEEN WITHOUT PROBLEMS UNTIL NOW. HAVE NOT DISCUSSED THIS WITH THE DEALERSHIP, BUT AM NOT ENCOURAGED BY THE TENOR OF COMMENTS POSTED HERE REGARDING TOYOTA STEPPING UP AND ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY. I SEE NO NEED, AT THIS POINT, TO PAY TO HAVE AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST DONE BY THE DEALERSHIP AS THE CAR IS OBVIOUSLY USING AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL.
I APPLIED BRAKE ON A RED LIGHT WHICH IS AS USUAL FOR ME AND I NOTICED CAR DIDN'T SLOW DOWN AND KEPT MOVING PAST THE RED LIGHT. I'VE HAD TO REPLACE MY LOW BEAM HEAD LAMPS 4 TIMES IN THE PAST 6 MONTHS. FIRST I WAS ON A 2 HOUR LONG TRIP WHEN MY PASSENGER AND I COULD SPECIFICALLY SEE BOTH HEADLIGHTS WERE GETTING DIM. AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR OF DRIVING THEY HAD BOTH GONE OUT COMPLETELY AND I WAS FORCED TO USE MY HIGH BEAMS ON THE INTERSTATE. WHEN WE ARRIVED IN TOWN, BOTH BULBS WERE REPLACED AND THE DRIVER'S SIDE BULB LASTED 3 MONTHS BEFORE DYING OUT. I RODE AROUND LIKE THAT FOR A WEEK BECAUSE I KEPT FORGETTING UNTIL I'D DRIVE AT NIGHT AND THE SHOPS WERE CLOSED. SO ABOUT A WEEK AFTER MY DRIVER'S SIDE BULB DIED, I WENT TO THE AUTO STORE AND BOUGHT A NEW BULB, ONLY TO FIND OUT MY PASSENGER SIDE BULB HAD GONE OUT THAT SAME DAY; I DIDN'T NOTICE BECAUSE IT WAS DURING THE DAY. UNTIL MY DRIVER'S SIDE BULB WENT OUT UNEXPECTEDLY WHEN I WAS PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY. I WAS GETTING READY TO LEAVE AND SAW THE REFLECTION ON MY NEIGHBOR'S WINDOW -- NO MORE DRIVER'S SIDE LIGHT. I PUT MY PLANS ON HOLD UNTIL I WENT TO THE AUTO SHOP AND THEY REPLACED THE BULB NO PROBLEM. FOUR DAYS LATER, THE PASSENGER SIDE BULB GOES OUT. I'M FED UP WITH HAVING TO GET NEW BULBS EVERY FEW MONTHS (OR DAYS FOR THAT MATTER). IT'S OCCURRED WHEN I WAS PARKED, DRIVING SLOW IN THE CITY, AND GOING FAST ON THE INTERSTATE. IT DOESN'T MATTER THE STATE IN WHICH THE VEHICLE WAS BEING HANDLED. THE LIGHTS ARE GOING OUT CONSISTENTLY AND IT'S OCCURRING FAR TOO FREQUENTLY. *TR

THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE ACTUATOR SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,514.
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN HER BRAKES TOTALLY FAILED. SHE APPLIED BRAKE PRESSURE AS HARD AS SHE COULD, BUT IT HAD NOT EFFECT. FORTUNATELY, SINCE SHE WAS IN THE LEFT LANE OF THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, SHE WAS ABLE TO COAST TO A STOP IN THE LEFT HAND SHOULDER. SEVERAL RED LIGHTS LIT UP ON THE DASHBOARD, INCLUDING THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO WORLD TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN ATLANTA. THEY SAID THE BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER FAILED. I HAVE A 2010 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHEN TRYING TO SLOW DOWN, ANY TIME A BUMP IS HIT, (OR A POTHOLE) THE BRAKING POWER SIGNIFICANT DECREASES . THIS GREATLY INCREASES THE STOPPING DISTANCE AND IS VERY SCARY IN TRAFFIC AND IN WINTER DRIVING. IS THIS A PROBLEM? I CALLED TOYOTA EARLIER FOR THE SAME ISSUE AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THIS IS NORMAL AND THIS OCCURS BECAUSE ONLY ONE TIRE IS HITTING THE POTHOLE OR BUMP' IT IS VERY SCARY AND I HAVE TO LEAVE A LOT OF SPACE AHEAD OF MY CAR.
