Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2017 Toyota Prius. It was discovered when the contact listed the vehicle for sale that there was a mileage discrepancy. The vehicle was as a private sale. At the time of the purchase, the mileage was 126,611. The potential purchaser provided a CARFAX report that recorded the mileage on 11/6/2024 at 225,810.
During hot temperatures and after coming to a full stop, the car stalls/hesitates significantly (5-6seconds) when pushing the gas pedal. The car eventually proceeds but the issue reoccurs. It can only be intermittently reproduced and no codes are shown on the car dashboard. Mechanics are unable to identify the source of the issue so it cannot be resolved.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Prius. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25-30 MPH, the vents were blowing out cold air. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was adding coolant to the coolant reservoir every three to four days. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the coolant was leaking into the exhaust pipe. The dealer recommended that the exhaust system front pipe be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted, opened a case, and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 81,700.
Standing at a red light and someone rear ended
While driving the speed limit of 70mph on a major highway, the sunroof on my 2017 Toyota Prius exploded. There was no warning of any kind: no other traffic nearby so no rock or debris from another vehicle; no overpass or bridge so nothing from above; it was a mild sunny day of 76 degrees so not a weather factor; and by the angle of the glass that remains being in an outward position rather than inward, reveals to me that it was from inside out, not from outside in as if it were a rock hitting. It just exploded. I was the only person in the car. Thankfully, the visor was shut on it or the shattered glass would have caused injury and of greater serious concern is just the sudden sound of what sounded like a bomb going off over my head was enough to cause a reaction which easily would result in an accident. It was a terrifying experience! I was lucky no other vehicles were nearby and could react and safely get off the road. I called 911 immediately and reported it. I have read many such claims from other Toyota owners online (see ToyotaNation.com and search by "exploding Sunroof") and even from a technician at my nearby Toyota Collision Center that it just happened to a friend of theirs also. This is not a one time issue. When I took the car to the Collision Center for an estimate and inquired about the damage, they could find no recall on it by Toyota. This is certainly a dangerous and hazardous issue that needs to be addressed asap before someone is seriously hurt or there is a fatality.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Prius. The contact stated while the contact's wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed. The accelerator pedal was depressed, however the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled and jerked. The vehicle was driven to the residence. The contact stated that the battery indicator did not look as if the battery was charging. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to two independent mechanics; however, the failure was not duplicated. In addition, the vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the failure was not duplicated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The contact stated that the failure had become persistent. The contact stated that during one failure his wife was driving, and the vehicle lost motive power and stalled. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic however, the failure was not duplicated. In addition, the contact stated that during one failure, the excessive acceleration warning light illuminated. The contact had not depressed the accelerator pedal during the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The contact was informed that no assistance was available. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
Dashboard pop up came up saying that the grille shutter is inoperable to visit a dealer. Went online and noticed there were recalls for my Prius year and because emissions is affected I contacted Toyota financial customer service who said to go to a dealer and that they would fix no charge. Went three times to the dealer and they did not want to honor the recall. Charged me $200 to run diagnostics on the vehicle and confirmed that the code that was being recalled matched. They made excuses and in the end did not fix. The pop up appeared March 2024 and since then I now have another pop up appear about the hybrid system overheating due to them not fixing. I went to a local mechanic who said it was the dealers responsibility since there are service bulletins but they do not want to help. The car has stalled out on the freeway almost leaving me to get hit and my fuel has gotten worse.

Coolant leaking into exhaust And engine also vehicle suddenly stops for no reason now engine is completely broken due to the coolant going into the motor oil
On 10/16/23 I was turning slowly into a parking spot and my car suddenly accelerated without my pressing the accelerator. I slammed on the break and the car stopped. It was frightening because I could have hit someone or something but luckily the car stopped before that happened. I believe that this was a malfunction of the accelerator. This has not been checked or reported to anyone yet but I will be calling Toyota to have it checked. There have been no warning messages.
The contact owns a 2017 Toyota Prius. The contact stated while driving 10 MPH and pulling out of a parking lot, the vehicle lost motive power and made abnormal sounds. Several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle failed to restart, and was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the head gasket was blown, causing damage to the engine. The dealer informed the contact that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the same assessment was made. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
While filling my Prius with gas, as soon as I started pumping, it spewed gas all over my arms and shirt, as the gas would not go down the pipe into the gas tank. My mechanic explained that gasline exhaust valve was stuck causing the gas to spirt back out the intake opening. This part had to be replaced. Firestone replaced it for a total of $337.08, however, the dealer would have charged more. It was not covered as a defect issue. The experienced mechanic said that he had seen this problem on several Toyotas. This is hazardous and Toyota should repair those that exhibit this problem; also they should change their design so that the exhaust valve does not fail causing gasoline to spill on the person pumping gas and all down the side of the car onto the cement pavement.
When filling gas, a near-empty Prius overflowed almost immediately, splashing fuel over the car, the ground, tires, and my feet! Gas is flammable and not good to get on one's skin. Firestone experienced/certified repairman said that he's repaired many Toyotas with the same problem. No advanced warning was presented. Last time I filled it before this incident it worked fine. Technician said that the air-exhaust that permits air to escape while gas is being delivered to the tank had failed to work properly, causing the fuel to spew back up the gas line and on to the car/ground. He had to order a part from Toyota and replace it. This cost me $337 for part and labor. I believe this is a malfunction that Toyota should cover. This part should not fail as it could start a fire and contaminate the car, ground and put petroleum on people.
The rear quarter panel is peeling off
On 9/14/22 I was almost a hundred miles from my home in Sherrill, NY on Rte 81 south, approaching the bridge in Binghamton, NY when I heard a loud ringing noise. At first I thought it was my phone; then I thought it was a police vehicle; then a construction noise. I finally faced the fact if was coming from my 2017 Prius which had just reached 20,000 miles. I was in heavy traffic but managed to pull over and walk around the car as the noise seemed to be coming from the rear. I saw nothing amiss. I managed to drive another twenty minutes to Great Bend, PA and just before I pulled into the parking lot at McDonalds the noise stopped. I called Nye Automotive in Oneida, NY which had sold me the car and talked to a mechanic who said he had no experience with a ringing noise. Proceeding cautiously I drove 135 miles to Quakertown, Pa where my son diagnosed the problem as the brake pad on the drivers side rear wheel that had tilted and was banging against the rotor. My son replaced the brake pad and next day we drove to Long Beach Island, NJ, stopping to check for heat coming from that wheel. It was fine. When I got back home to Sherrill I could found the email of Mark Templin, CEO of Toyota who gave me the number of [XXX], a Toyota executive. I have been driving for sixty years and had never encountered a tilted brake pad. I am so easy on brakes that mechanics marvel that I can get to over 50,000 miles before work needs to be done. I am concerned that the ringing-clanging noise alone could cause an accident. Having had a bee and a mouse in the car previously I remained in control but could have reacted badly. I told [XXX] that I thought perhaps Toyota would like to see who had made the brake pads. I had heard of airbags and other components purchased by many car makers having caused problems in the past. Mr. Wilson didn't seem interested. Also, since my car was beyond the 3-year warranty he felt Nye wanting to charge me to look at the car was appropriate. The driver's side car seat automatic seat adjustment (backwards/forwards) failed all of a sudden with no warning. It was working when I parked the car to go into an office for an appointment. When I came back out to the car, it wouldn't work and was making strange noises. I called the dealer and they said to bring in the car to be looked at. This is a safety issue because it was hard to reach the pedal to drive the car without pillows pushing me forward in the car seat. The car was taken to the dealer twice and I was finally told that the track the car goes forward and backward on was worn out and the motor would need to be replaced. I was quoted $3K for the repair because the warranty had expired and the car seat needed to be removed to make the repairs.
I had just changed from the right-hand lane to the center lane of a six-lane expressway when my vehicle lost power and i was able to move over to the right hand shoulder of the road. The accelerator pedal did not work and I just coasted to the side of the road. I noticed that a red warning saying something about RADAR flashed on the instrument panel when this happened. I turned off the vehicle and tried to restart it, but nothing happened. I then texted the person who was expecting me and explained the problem. Since I had just taken the car to the dealer for its regular 40,000 mile service four days earlier, I intended to call my dealer to ask them what to do. All of this took about 10 minutes with the engine turned off. Before doing this, I again tried to restart it. It started and I inched it forward on the shoulder of the road. Since I did not feel safe parked on the shoulder, I merged into traffic and took it to another Toyota dealer. They said that they could not look at my vehicle to diagnose what might be wrong because all their technicians were going home at 4 pm. I drove to my son's house and he suggested that I report this to you. Something similar happened to him when he was driving this same vehicle about six month ago. He was driving on a city street, did not notice any dashboard warning, and took it to this same dealer. They were not able find anything wrong. I felt I should report this since this is the second time this vehicle suddenly lost power. My incident happened when I was driving at expressway speed and could have caused a serious accident had I not been able to coast to the shoulder of the road.
For the past year or so we have had issues with the vehicle not starting properly. If we leave the radio, wipers, heater, or air conditioner in the ON position when we shut the car off, or a window down a little on a hot day, a sensor triggers a Low Battery error code. We have had the battery checked and it is NOT low. When this happens to start the car we need to get a jumpstart from someone. This limits where we feel safe driving to as in a remote place where not many other people and cars are it would be more difficult to find someone to give us a jumpstart. On occasion, we have had to call a towing service to come to help us, which requires sometimes a long wait. The car starts right up once the connection to the other vehicle's battery is made. We should not need a checklist to make sure everything is turned off before we leave the car to avoid this non-starting issue.
Windshield cracked from bottom to top and across while sitting and there was no evidence of a rock or chip that would cause that. Air temp was about 95 degrees. No rain, no impact, car was sitting parked and not running.
For the second time (first in 2019) I was seconds and maybe two feet from stopping the car to park when, with my foot on the brake, the car suddenly and without warning lunged forward at what seemed like full throttle. The first "crash" was in my driveway. The force was shocking and took off the front of the car. I insisted Toyota investigate and they ultimately denied any liability. After the car was allegedly repaired, I started noticing another phenomenon: every time I would slow down to brake--approaching an intersection or stop sign, etc.--the car would briefly lunge forward before the brakes engaged to stop the car. I reported this to the dealer 2-3 times and each time I was assured that this was "normal" for a hybrid transitioning from gas to electric at a lower speed. Two weeks ago, with a friend in the car, I was pulling into a parking space, foot on the brake and about to stop, when the same thing occurred: without warning, the car lunged forward, at what seemed like full throttle, and crashed into a low concrete wall. Had it been seconds later, we would have had our seatbelts off and gone into the windshield. There were injuries. FYI, I have a pretty much perfect driving record and log thousands of miles each year. I had ZERO problems with the Prius I owned prior to this one. I will never drive this car again.
THE VEHICLE WAS RUNNING AND STOPPED AT A STOP LIGHT. WHEN ACCELERATING TO PROCEED FROM THE STOP LIGHT THE VEHICLE WOULD BARELY ACCELERATE NO MATTER HOW FAR WE PRESSED THE GAS PEDAL DOWN. THE ENGINE WAS NOT REVVING FASTER IT JUST APPEARED TO STAY IN EV MODE WITH VERY LITTLE ACCELERATION. FINALLY AFTER ABOUT 5-10 SECONDS THE CAR STARTS ACCELERATING. WE ARE VERY CONCERNED THAT IF THIS OCCURS AT A TURN ONTO A BUSY ROAD WE COULD BE IN A POSITION WHERE WE ARE STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF ONCOMING CROSS TRAFFIC. THIS IS VERY INTERMITTENT, MAYBE ONCE OR TWICE PER SUMMER (USUALLY IN THE HOTTER TIMES OF THE YEAR). WE'VE HAD THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP AND BOTH TIMES THEY HAVE SAID THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM. SEARCHING ON THE INTERNET THIS SOUNDS LIKE TSB-0241-17, WHICH I HAVE SHARED WITH THE DEALER BUT BOTH TIMES THEY HAVE INDICATED THEY SEE NO SIGN OFF A PROBLEM.
MY WINDSHIELD CRACKED FOR NO REASON, WHILE IT WAS PARKED. THIS IS THE SECOND CRACK I GOTTEN ON MY WINDSHIELD FROM OWNING IT FOR 2 YEARS. THIS IS HIGHLY UNUSUAL, I DON'T DRIVE MY CAR VERY FAR, AND IT HAPPENED WHILE IT WAS PARKED.
THE COVERING ON THE STEERING WHEEL AT THE HAND LOCATIONS HAS EXCESSIVE WEAR AND THE PLASTIC IS ROUGH ON SKIN. THE MANUFACTURE WILL NOT WARRANTY THE STEERING WHEEL COVER BECAUSE OF BEING OUT OF WARRANTY I DO NOT FEEL THAT A STEERING WHEEL COVER SHOULD WEAR OFF IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE WHICH IS CURRENTLY AT 139000 MILES.
MY 2 YEAR CHECK UP W/14,932 MILES I WAS ADVISED MY FRONT ROTORS NEED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO POOR PAD CONTACT AND REAR ROTORS ARE GROOVED HEAVILY AND NEED TO BE REPLACED AS WELL. I WAS SHOCKED. I DID NOT HAVE REPLACED . MECHANIC SAID WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION. IS THERE A RECALL? WHAT IS GOING ON W/TOYOTA PRIUS BRAKES. AM AFRAID TO DRIVE CAR AND CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE ROTORS EVERY 15,000 MILES.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE WIPER BLADE ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE IN THE MIDDLE OF A RAIN STORM. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER, EXITED THE HIGHWAY, AND PURCHASED A NEW WIPER BLADE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE CONTACT HAD TO USE TOYOTA WIPER BLADES EVEN THOUGH THE CONTACT DID NOT KNOW WHERE THEY COULD BE PURCHASED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THIS WAS THE THIRD TIME THE BLADES DETACHED AND THE BLADES WERE CURRENTLY ZIP TIED TO ASSURE THEY DID NOT DETACH. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
I HAD AN SUA (SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION). I DROVE UP AN INCLINE INTO THE "DRIVEWAY" OF THE HOLIDAY IN IN DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO, PULLED UP INTO A SMALL CIRCULAR AREA/DRIVEWAY WHERE YOU CAN REGISTER FOR YOUR ROOM OR PICK UP OR DROP OFF PEOPLE. MY FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE, I WAS STOPPING THE CAR TO PICK UP MY DAUGHTER AND HER BOYFRIEND. AND THE CAR TOOK OFF ON IT'S OWN. I TRIED DESPERATELY TO USE THE BRAKES, BUT THEY WOULDN'T WORK, SO I KEPT DRIVING AROUND THE CIRCULAR DRIVEWAY TO KEEP CONTROL OF THE CAR WHILE I KEPT TRYING TO STOP THE CAR TO NO AVAIL. THE CAR KEPT ACCELERATING AND SCREECHING AROUND THE DRIVEWAY AND THEN I FINALLY LOST CONTROL AND THE CAR HIT A WALL TO MY RIGHT, THEN MOVED A BIT FORWARD AND BUMPED INTO A CURB ON THE LEFT AND FINALLY STOPPED.MY OTHER DAUGHTER WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT.WE WERE BOTH TERRIFIED! I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND FROM THE TIME OF THE ACCIDENT (10/28/19) TO THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO TALK WITH A PERSON IN THEIR CLAIMS DEPT OR RATHER RECEIVE AN EMAIL RESPONSE, IT WAS 64 DAYS LATER (10/31/19). AND THAT IS ONLY BECAUSE I CALLED THEM. I TALKED TO SEVERAL CASE MANAGERS ON DIFFERENT DAYS WHO SEEMED UNHELPFUL UNTIL FINALLY ONE OF THEM GOT IN TOUCH WITH THE CLAIMS DEPARTMENT AND TOLD ME THEY WOULD CALL ME. TOYOTA WILL NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS AND I AM REALLY UPSET THAT NOW I WILL HAVE AN ACCIDENT ON MY RECORD AND MY INSURANCE WILL INCREASE SIGNIFICANTLY FOR SOMETHING THAT ISN'T EVEN MY FAULT! I AM AN EXCELLENT DRIVER AND HAVE NEVER HAD AN ACCIDENT THAT WAS MY FAULT. I WAS ALERT AND COHERENT AS WAS OBVIOUS TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE I SPOKE TO DIRECTLY AFTER THE ACCIDENT. MY DAUGHTER, IN THE PASSENGER SEAT, WITNESSED ALL OF MY ATTEMPTS TO USE THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO LONGO TOYOTA (3534 N PECK RD, EL MONTE, CA 91731, (855) 415-6497), BUT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,825. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
THIS IS FOR 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS PRIME, BUT THERE IS NO OPTION. WHILE TAKING MY KID TO ENROLL IN SWIMMING CLASS, WHILE TAKING TURN INTO THE FACILITY THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING AND THE CAR WOULDN'T STOP, SOME HOW I DROVE INTO PARKING LOT (I AM NOT SURE HOW I DID IT IN THAT TENSE SITUATION) NONE OF THE BUTTONS WERE WORKING, THE CAR WAS BEEPING SHOWING EVERY THING FAILED AND BY GODS GRACE THE HAND BRAKE WORKED AND FINALLY THE CAR STOPPED. NOW I AM SCARED AS THIS HAPPENED WITH MY KID IN THE CAR. I NEED HELP AND I DON'T WANT TO DRIVE THIS CAR AGAIN AND I TOWED IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER. AFTER EXITING I CALMED DOWN A LITTLE BIT CALLED MY HUSBAND AND HE RECORDED THE ERRORS AND THE SOUNDS. I THOUGHT THE CAR WAS GOING TO BLOW UP.
I PULLED UP TO THE STOP SIGN, THEN PROCEEDED TO GO AND I HAD NO POWER. I SAT THERE FOR 10-15 SECONDS BEFORE THE ACCELERATOR KICKED IN. IT SHOOK ME UP. I PROCEEDED ON AND THEN IT AGAIN HAPPENED. I WAS SITTING AT A RED LIGHT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION AND WHEN THE LIGHT GREEN I HAD NO ACCELERATION POWER AT ALL. PEOPLE WERE HONKING AND YELLING AT ME. IT WAS VERY SCARY. AFTER WHAT SEEMED TO BE AN ETERNITY, THE ACCELERATOR KICKED IN AND I WAS ABLE TO PROCEED. I HAD IT TOWED TO TOYOTA DEALER, THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP.
CAR WAS PARKED IN PARKING LOT IN 100 DEGREE TEMPERATURE. WINDSHIELD HAD NO DAMAGE WHATSOEVER. RETURNED TO CAR 4 HOURS LATER. TWO AND ONE-HALF FOOT CRACK, ORIGINATING IN BOTTOM DRIVER'S SIDE CORNER OF WINDSHIELD, APPEARED. NO CHIPS WERE PRESENT. DUE TO THE CRACK, VISIBILITY THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD IS COMPROMISED AND POSES A SAFETY RISK.
SINCE PURCHASING THE VEHICLE IN OCTOBER, 2017, I HAVE HAD INTERMITTENT OCCURRENCES WHERE THE BRAKES FEEL LIKE THEY SLIP WHEN COMING TO A STOP. IT HAS HAPPENED IN ALL WEATHER CONDITIONS, (BUT MOSTLY WHEN WET), AND AT ALL SPEEDS. I CAN GO WEEKS WITHOUT AN OCCURRENCE, AND THEN IT CAN HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES IN A WEEK. IT SEEMS TO BE COMPLETELY RANDOM. I HAVE BEEN TO TWO DEALERSHIPS, AND FINALLY WAS ABLE TO DRIVE WITH A TECH WHO FELT THE "SLIPPAGE". THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR A FEW DAYS AND TOLD ME THEY TALKED TO CORPORATE AND THAT A BUMP IN THE ROAD TRIGGERS AN ABS SENSOR TO FIRE, CAUSING THE ABS TO KICK IN. THEY ALSO TOLD ME TIRE PRESSURE MIGHT AFFECT IT. NONE OF THIS SITS RIGHT WITH ME BECAUSE IT CONTINUES TO HAPPEN. I HAVE EXPERIENCED DRIVING A CAR WHEN ABS KICKS IN, AND THIS IS NOT THE SENSATION I AM GETTING IN THE PRIUS. "SLIPPING" IS THE BEST ADJECTIVE I HAVE TO EXPLAIN WHAT IT FEELS LIKE, AND WHEN IT HAPPENS IT IS TERRIFYING. THE LAST TIME I TOOK THE CAR IN TO HAVE THEM LOOK AT THE BRAKES AGAIN, I WAS TOLD THAT SINCE CORPORATE HAD BEEN CONTACTED PREVIOUSLY, THEY WOULD HAVE TO GO BACK TO THEM. THEY DIDN'T KEEP THE CAR, AND TOLD ME THEY WOULD CALL ME BACK WHEN THE CORPORATE REP WOULD BE THERE SO HE COULD DRIVE WITH ME. THAT WAS A FEW WEEKS AGO, AND THEY HAVEN'T CALLED BACK, OR RETURNED MY CALL. AT THIS POINT, I FEEL LIKE TOYOTA IS HIDING SOMETHING FROM ME AND I HAVE LOST ALL TRUST IN THE BRAND. I FEEL LIKE I AM DRIVING AN UNSAFE CAR AND TOYOTA IS IGNORING EVERYTHING I AM SAYING TO THEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO TURN AND THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL. AS A RESULT, THE VEHICLE CRASHED INTO A STORE. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO EDMARK TOYOTA (LOCATED AT 15933 N IDAHO CENTER BLVD, NAMPA, ID 83687, (208) 468-8000) WHERE IT WAS BEING DIAGNOSED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 2,300. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
WHILE I AM SLOWING TO A STOP, A WARNING LIGHT COMES ON INDICATING THAT I AM PRESSING THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR AT THE SAME TIME. THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE. THE CAR DOES TRY TO MOVE FORWARD BUT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE OVERCOMES THAT ISSUE. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES (NOT EVERY TIME) BUT FORTUNATELY NO ACCIDENTS HAVE OCCURRED. THIS HAS ALSO NEVER HAPPENED WHEN I AM DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND NEED TO BRAKE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA PRIUS. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V579000 (ENGINE). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. TOYOTA CERTIFIED AT CAPITAL PLAZA (6100 ANNAPOLIS RD, LANDOVER, MD 20784, (301) 772-6900) WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE PART WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE AND WAS NOT ABLE TO CONFIRM WHEN THE PART WOULD BECOME AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
WE WERE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC SIGNAL GOING NORTH. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, THE CAR IN FRONT OF US STARTED TO GO AND ALL OF THE SUDDEN, OUR CAR WENT INTO RAPID ACCELERATION. WE COULD NOT STOP THE CAR. IT CRASHED INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. WE TRIED JAMMING ON THE BREAKS AND TURNING OFF THE IGNITION, BUT COULD NOT GET CONTROL. BECAUSE WE WERE HEADING UPHILL, THE CAR FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. WE WERE ON A CITY STREET AT A STOP SIGNAL.
WHEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY DURING RAIN THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL SPONTANEOUSLY STOPS AND LASHES ON THE DASH DISPLAY THAT IT IS NO LONGER SET, THE CAR DECELERATES RAPIDLY, LEAVING THE DRIVER SCRAMBLING TO DETERMINE WHAT HAS HAPPENED. THE SYSTEMS INVOLVED ARE THE ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL AND "TOYOTA SAFETY SENSE."
TAKATA RECALL POSSIBLY. WET PAVEMENT, TRAFFIC SLOWED ON INTERSTATE TO ABOUT 45 MPH, TAILGATING SMALL PICKUP HIT MY REAR CRUMPLE ZONE, SHOVED ME INTO A SMALL SUV THAT CRUSHED MY FRONT CRUMPLE ZONE. AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. NEITHER MY WIFE (FRONT SEAT PASSENGER) NOR I FELT ANY DISCOMFORT, BUT A FEW DAYS LATER SHE COMPLAINED ABOUT PAIN IN HER WAIST AREA. SHE WAS LATER DETERMINED TO HAVE A FRACTURED PELVIS AND A JOSTLED LEFT HIP JOINT.
MY VEHICLE WAS REAR-ENDED AND SHOVED INTO A THIRD VEHICLE. WE WERE ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY WITH WET PAVEMENT, AND TRAFFIC WAS SLOWING. WE WERE TRAVELING STRAIGHT. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY, AND MY WIFE, BELTED IN THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT, WAS TWISTED SIDEWAYS BY THE IMPACT. SHE EXPERIENCED A PELVIC FRACTURE AND AGGRAVATION OF HER ARTHRITIC LEFT HIP JOINT. WE BELIEVE THAT AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THESE INJURIES. I HAVE ATTACHED THREE EVENT DATA FILES AND VEHICLE CONTROL HISTORY FILES. (I CAN'T SEE IF ALL THREE ARE ATTACHED.)
UNABLE TO FILL GAS TANK. VAPOR-CONTAINMENT VALVE ENGAGES DURING REFUELLING, CAUSING FUEL TO SPILL TO GROUND AND UNABLE TO FILL MORE THAT ONE-HALF GALLON OF FUEL. CAR WAS ON 2 LANE BLACKTOP IN 40 MPH ZONE DRIVING APX 35 MPH, A FEMALE, RESPONSIBLE OWNER/DRIVER AGE 79 WAS DRIVING WHEN SUDDENLY,WITHOUT ANY WARNING,COMES TO NEAR HALT IN ROAD AND PULLS/HARD TO RIGHT HAND SIDE OF SHOULDER OFF THE ROAD. DRIVER HAD NO CONTROL OVER DIRECTION OR SPEED BEFORE FINALLY ABLE TO STOP CAR ON TOP OF DITCH. DRIVER WAS ABLE TO GET CAR TO STALL/STOP ENGINE BEFORE REACHING DITCH AND POSSIBLY A TURNOVER. DRIVER HAD NEVER BEEN SO FEARFUL IN HER LIFE,HAD SHE BEEN UNABLE TO STOP CAR IT WOULD HAVE DRIVEN HER OVER.REPORTED SITUATION TO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT;T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH CAR SENDING DRIVER BACK OUT ON ROAD WITH CAR, THIS IS VERY SERIOUS SITUATION. THANKFUL SHE WAS ON SMALL COUNTRY IOAD AND NOT ON BUSY HWY OR THIS CAR WOULD HAVE "PULLED/LEAD" HER INTO OTHER TRAFFIC, OR WORSE, A SIDEWALK FULL OF PEOPLE AND OR CHILDREN. SHE HAD NO CONTROL OF CAR FOR WHAT SEEMED LIKE A FULL MINUTE OR MORE
I WAS GOING TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN AND THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE RIGHT AWAY EVEN THOUGH IT WAS IN "D" MY HUSBAND SAID HE EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING TWICE WHILE DRIVING THIS CAR.
THE INVOLVED VEHICLES WERE DESIGNED TO ENTER A FAILSAFE DRIVING MODE IN RESPONSE TO CERTAIN HYBRID SYSTEM FAULTS. TOYOTA HAS FOUND THAT IN RARE SITUATIONS, THE VEHICLE MAY NOT ENTER A FAILSAFE DRIVING MODE AS INTENDED. IF THIS OCCURS, THE VEHICLE COULD LOSE POWER AND STALL. WHILE POWER STEERING AND BRAKING WOULD REMAIN OPERATIONAL, A VEHICLE STALL WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHER SPEEDS COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.
WE PARKED THE CAR AND WENT FOR A HIKE. UPON RETURNING TO THE CAR, WE NOTICED A FOOT LONG CRACK HAD FORMED IN THE WINDSHIELD. IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CONNECTED TO ANY CHIPS OR DAMAGE TO THE WINDSHIELD.
WHIRLING SOUND EMANATING FROM FRONT AREA... GOT PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. FINALLY TOOK TO DEALERSHIP, EVEN THOUGH NO WARNING LIGHTS, AND THEY INDICATED BRAKE ACTUATOR BAD, TO THE TUNE OF $3400. SO I GAVE MY OTHER PRIUS (06) TO MY DAUGHTER TO DRIVE AND SAME NOISE, SO NOW HAVE TWO FAIRLY YOUNG (FOR A TOYOTA) PAPERWEIGHTS, SINCE SERVICE MANAGER SAID UNSAFE TO DRIVE. COMPLAINED TO CORPORATE AND THEY SAID EXTENDED WARRANTY OUT OF TIME. THIS IN UNACCEPTABLE FOR THIS AGE OF CAR.
WINDSHIELD CRACKS FROM IMPACT WITH SMALL ROCKS. IN THE PAST WEEK, MY WINDSHIELD WAS IMPACTED TWICE BY SMALL ROCKS. BOTH TIMES THE WINDSHIELD WAS DAMAGED. BOTH TIMES I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MILES PER HOUR ON A HIGHWAY. THE WINDHIELD IS THE PROBLEM. I REALIZE A ROCK MIGHT DAMAGE A WINDSHIELD BUT THE GLASS IN MY PRIUS IS MUCH MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE THAN IS ACCEPTABLE. LUCKILY I GOT BOTH CRACKS REPAIRED BEFORE THE DAMAGE COULD SPREAD AND CAUSE SAFETY ISSUES. (I BOUGHT MY PRIUS THREE MONTHS AGO; IT HAS 5,000 MILES.)
VEHICLE'S STEERING WHEEL BEGAN PEELING AT (12 O' CLOCK LOCATION). THE CAR HAS BEEN PARKED ON THE STREET AND GARAGED (NORMAL EXPOSURE TO SUN). FIRST, IT BEGAN TO BUBBLE AND THEN IT PEELED UNTIL NOW REACHING A3 INCHES WIDE.
SUMMARY: HAVE OWNED MY PRIUS PRIME FOR EIGHT MONTHS AND HAVE NEEDED TO REPAIR ONE WINDSHIELD CHIP, REPLACE MY WINDSHIELD ONCE, AND CURRENTLY HAVE ANOTHER CRACK THAT CANNOT BE REPAIRED. DETAILS: PURCHASED MY PRIUS PRIME DEC 10, 2017. ON DEC 20, 2017, GOT A CHIP IN MY WINDSHIELD WHILE DRIVING TO WORK ALONG THE LOCAL HIGHWAY AND WAS ABLE TO GET IT REPAIRED SAME-DAY. IN JUNE 2018, GOT ANOTHER CHIP IN MY WINDSHIELD AND THE CRACK SPREAD BEYOND REPAIR ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. STARTED THE PROCESS TO HAVE IT REPLACED AND IT TOOK APPROXIMATELY SIX WEEKS AND THREE APPOINTMENTS WITH SAFELITE BEFORE THEY HAD THE CORRECT WINDSHIELD WITH THE CORRECT PARTS. ACCORDING TO SAFELITE, TOYOTA HAD CHANGED THE DESIGN OF THE WINDSHIELD AND THE NEW DESIGN WAS ON BACKORDER. PAID MY $500 DEDUCTIBLE FOR THIS REPLACEMENT. ON AUGUST 8, 2018, JUST A FEW WEEKS AFTER REPLACING THE WINDSHIELD, I GOT ANOTHER CHIP THAT ALSO SPREAD BEYOND REPAIR IMMEDIATELY. AS OF THIS WRITING, I HAVE NOT YET REPLACED THE WINDSHIELD FOR THE SECOND TIME. AFTER DOING RESEARCH, I FOUND THERE IS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT, FILED IN MARCH 2018, RELATED TO THESE DEFECTIVE WINDSHIELDS. ATTACHED ARE RECEIPTS FROM SAFELITE SHOWING THE CHIP REPAIR, PAYMENT OF MY DEDUCTIBLE, AND PICTURES OF THE CURRENT CRACK.
