ON MAY 10, 2011 I EXPERIENCED SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION AND THEN INTERMITTENTLY UNTIL ON AUGUST 31, 2011 I EXPERIENCED 3 EVEN MORE DRAMATIC UNINTENDED ACCELERATIONS WITHIN ABOUT 40 MINUTES. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY NEARBY MECHANIC WHO TOLD ME THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT REQUIRES THE ATTENTION OF TOYOTA DEALER. THE LOCAL DEALER CALLED IN A TOYOTA REGIONAL SPECIALIST IN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHO CONCLUDED AFTER TESTS THAT EVERYTHING APPEARS TO BE NORMAL. HE DID INDICATE THAT BRAKING CAN ACTUALLY CAUSE REVVING WHICH SOUNDS LIKE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION & PERHAPS THAT IS WHAT I EXPERIENCED. HE ALSO SAID THAT TOYOTA IS CONSIDERING BUILDING FUTURE MODELS WITH GREATER DISTANCE BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS & THEY MAY ALSO ELEVATE THE BRAKE PEDAL SO THERE IS MORE SEPARATION BETWEEN THESE 2 PEDALS AND THUS LESS LIKELIHOOD OF ONE'S FOOT DRIFTING BETWEEN THEM. IN CONCLUSION, THERE REMAINS IN MY MIND AN UNCERTAINTY AS TO WHAT HAS BEEN THE CAUSE OF THE UNINTENDED AND SCARY ACCELERATION I EXPERIENCED. IT MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY ACCELERATOR PEDAL OR IRONICALLY BY THE USE OF THE BRAKE PEDAL. IF THE LATTER, PERHAPS TOYOTA NEEDS TO MAKE AN APPROPRIATE MODIFICATION SO THAT NEITHER PEDAL CAN CAUSE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION.
A 2009 TOYOTA RAV 4 V6 LIMITED. WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS APPROXIMATELY 5 TO 10 MPH, VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED UPON BRAKING WITHOUT WARNING. THIS IS VERY SCARRY SINCE BRAKING DISTANCE CAN NOT BE DETERMINED AND HAS CAUSED NEAR ACCIDENTS. THIS HAS HAPPEND ABOUT 6 TO 8 TIMES AND WAS REPORTED TO THE DEALER ON 3 OCCASIONS NEAR 5,000 AND 25,000 AND 27,000 MILES. APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING INCREASED THE ACCELERATION. THE TOYOTA SERVICE DEALER REVIEWED AND TEST DROVE THE RAV 4 TWICE. ON THE LAST OCCASION, THE VEHICLE WAS KEPT OVER NIGHT FOR A TOYOTA REGIONAL MANAGER TO INVESTIGATE AT 27,000 MILES. THE REGIONAL MANAGER, AFTER OUR DISCUSSION, INDICATED HE WOULD FILE A REPORT WITH TOYOTA. NEITHER THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER NOR THE TOYOTA REGIONAL MANAGER WERE ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE ACCELERATION WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED, HOWEVER THE LAST ACCELERATION UPON APPLYING BRAKES DID OCCUR AFTER THE PEDAL RECALL. THE REGIONAL MANAGER REVIEWED THE PEDAL RECALL INSTALLATION AND ASSURED ME IT WAS PERFORMED CORRECTLY. BOTH THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER AND THE TOYOTA REGIONAL MANAGER INFORMED ME THE ACCELERATION COULD BE USER ERROR SINCE THE BRAKE IS CLOSE TO THE ACCELERATOR. THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR COULD BE BOTH DEPRESSED AT THE SAME TIME. THEY WERE BOTH ABLE TO DO THIS, HIT THE BRAKE AND THE ACCELERATOR WITH ONE FOOT WHEN BRAKING. THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER THE SHOWED ME HOW OTHER MODELS HAVE THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR FURTHER APART. WHEN ASKED ABOUT A BRAKE OVER RIDE, THE REGIONAL MANAGER STATED THE COMPUTER UPDATE ON A 2009 RAV4 V6 COULD NOT BE ADAPTED TO OVER RIDE ACCELERATION WHEN BRAKING. THE DEALER SERVICE MANAGER AND TOYOTA REGIONAL MANAGER OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE RECEIVED A NOTICE FROM THE MANUFACTURER STATING THAT IN THE EVENT THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD POSSIBLY ACCELERATE ABNORMALLY, THAT THE BRAKES SHOULD BE APPLIED WITH THE FORCE OF TWO FEET TO PREVENT INCIDENT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE BELIEVED THE FAILURE WAS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT BECAUSE THE PEDAL WAS ENTIRELY TOO SMALL AND HE WAS UNABLE TO APPLY BOTH OF HIS FEET TO THE PEDAL TO STOP THE VEHICLE IF IT DID ACCELERATE. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED WHO ADVISED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO ALTER THE DESIGN OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SUGGESTED THAT THE CONTACT COULD USE AN AFTERMARKET PEDAL TO INSTALL IN THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE YET THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 21,000.
SUNROOF OF 2009 RAV 4 SPORT EXPLODED YESTERDAY WHILE ON THE INTERSTATE. NO OTHER VEHICLES AROUND AND NOWHERE NEAR AN OVERPASS. GLASS SHATTERED ON MYSELF AND PASSENGER IN THE CAR. THE WHOLE IS THE SIZE OF A BASKETBALL AND THE REMAINING GLASS IS BLOWN OUTWARD. *TR

THE CONTACT APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL AND WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE AND COME TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIANS WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THE CONTACT COULD FILE FOR ARBITRATION BUT THEY COULD NOT PROVIDE FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,735.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA RAV 4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 6 MPH, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED TO 20 MPH WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT HAD TO USE BOTH FEET TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES IN ORDER TO KEEP THE VEHICLE FROM ACCELERATING. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE AND THE INCIDENT DID NOT OCCUR. THE DEALER OFFERED NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE. THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER AND SINCE THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE A FAILURE, NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 21,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 20,735.
2009 TOYOTA RAV 4. CONSUMER STATES THE BRAKES WARE OUT EVERY 7000 TO 9000 MILES *TGW THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE BRAKES WEARING OUT PREMATURELY WAS DUE TO AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A SECOND OPINION AND WAS INFORMED IT WAS DUE TO POOR DESIGN WORK. *JB
HAD JUST PULLED SLOWLY INTO A PARKING SPACE, I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND APPLIED THE BRAKE. AS I WAS APPLYING PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE, THE ENGINE SPED UP TO MORE THAN 7,000 RPM. (MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR. IT WAS ON THE BRAKE ONLY.) I CONTINUED TO PRESS THE BRAKE WHICH STARTED TO SLIP, AND THEN I IMMEDIATELY PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL. AS THE ENGINE REACHED MAXIMUM RPM'S, IT DIED BACK TO AN IDLE. THIS IDENTICAL INCIDENT HAPPENED TWICE WITHIN 10 MINUTES. MY PARENTS AND WIFE WERE IN THE CAR AND CAN VOUCH FOR ME. NOTE: TWO MONTHS PRIOR, THIS IDENTICAL INCIDENT OCCURRED WHILE I WAS STOPPING AT A BUSY INTERSECTION WHILE PREPARING TO TURN LEFT. THERE WAS A STOPPED VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME WHICH I NEARLY HIT. MY WIFE WAS IN THE CAR AND CAN VOUCH FOR ME.
THE FRONT DRIVER SEAT IS LOOSE TO THE POINT THAT IT MAKE SOUND WHEN I BREAK OR ACCELERATE. BECAUSE THE SEAT MOVES, IT MAKES ME OCCASIONALLY TO GET DISTRACTING WHILE I AM DRIVING. THE CAR IS UNDER GUARANTEE BECAUSE I JUST BOUGHT IT , BUT THE DEALER REFUSE TO DO SOMETHING ARGUING THAT THE CAR IS FINE. I HAVE DRIVE SO MANY DIFFERENT CARS, AND ALL OF THEN DO NOT HAVE THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM. *TR
MY WIFE WAS PARKING HER 2009 TOYOTA RAV4. AFTER BACKING UP INTO A SPACE SHE PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AND IT TOOK OFF, CRASHING INTO THE CAR IN FRONT OF HER. MY WIFE WAS PETRIFIED BEING MY DAUGHTER ,WHO IS SIX MONTHS PREGNANT WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT. THANK GOD NO ONE WAS HURT. THE OWNER OF THE OTHER CAR WAS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THE WELL BEING OF MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER THEN THE DAMAGE TO HIS CAR. TO BAD TOYOTA DIDN'T FEEL THE SAME. CALLED TOYOTA FINANCIAL AND REPORTED THE INCIDENT. ASKED TO HAVE CAR TOWED TO THE DEALER AND DID NOT WANT CAR ANYMORE BEING MY WIFE WAS AFRAID TO DRIVE IT , BEING IT WAS AN UNSAFE VEHICLE. THATS WHEN THE FUN STARTED. TALKING TO A RUDE REP. I WAS INFORMED THAT WHETHER I WANTED THE CAR OR NOT I WAS LIABLE FOR THE PAYMENTS IF THE DEALER HAD IT OR NOT. I THEN ASKED HIM IF HE GAVE THE SAME RESPONSE TO THE FAMILY'S OF THE 34 PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN KILLED WITH THIS ACCELERATOR PROBLEM OR THE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN INJURED. HIS RESPONSE WAS THAT IF I DID NOT MAKE THE PAYMENTS THEY WOULD SCREW MY CREDIT RATINGS FOR THE NEXT SEVEN YEARS. HUNG UP. CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER PROTECTION CENTRER. MORE FUN. WAS TOLD I WOULD HERE FROM A CASE MGR. THE NEXT DAY. WOULD HAVE CAR TOWED TO DEALER AND WOULD BE PROVIDED WITH A LOANER CAR WHILE SAID CAR WAS BEING INSPECTED. 3 DAYS LATER AND 5 PHONE CALLS I WAS ABLE TO GET CASE MGR. NO LOANER CAR WOULD BE PROVIDED, 7 TO 10 DAY BEFORE SOMEONE WOULD CALL TO MAKE AN APPT. TO LOOK AT CAR, AND APPROX. 30 DAYS TO GET RESPONSE. THE TOYOTA HAS BEEN IN THE DRIVEWAY FOR TWO WEEKS PLENTY OF CALLS WHICH ARE ALL DOCUMENTED AND SOME ONE WILL CALL YOU SOON. MADE PAYMENT IN GOOD FAITH. TODAY IS DEC 15., TEN DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS. I CAN SEE THE HOLIDAY EXCUSES COMING. MAYBE I MGHT SEE SOME ONE IN THE NEXT FEW MONTHS, BUT REMEMBER THEY WANT THEIR MONEY. *TR

AFTER THREE DAYS, THE NON-SKID, CRUISE CONTROL AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ALSO ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER BUT THE FAILURE COULD STILL NOT BE DIAGNOSED. I AM WRITING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT TWO ACCELERATION PROBLEMS RECENTLY EXPERIENCED WITH MY 2009 TOYOTA RAV4 VEHICLE. ONE INVOLVED RAPID ACCELERATION EXPERIENCES AND THE OTHER A STICKING ACCELERATOR. (12,500 MILES) (I PREVIOUSLY COMPLAINED ABOUT A STICKING ACCELERATOR AFTER ONLY 1000 MILES AND INVOLVED IN THE ACCELERATOR RECALL.) ON SEPTEMBER 21ST, I HAD A RAPID ACCELERATION WITH MY 2009 RAV4 WHILE MY FOOT WAS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE PEDAL. MY WIFE WAS ALSO PRESENT AND WAS VERY FRIGHTENED BY THE EXPERIENCE SINCE IT OCCURRED WHEN TURNING A CORNER NEAR A PERSON HOLDING A PIZZA SIGN. I WAS THANKFULLY ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE WITH FIRM BRAKING. THE SUDDEN BURST OF ACCELERATION STOPPED AFTER ABOUT A 2 SECOND PERIOD OF TIME. DUE TO THIS EXPERIENCE, MY WIFE NOW REFUSES TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE . ON SEPTEMBER 22ND, I AGAIN HAD A RAPID ACCELERATION ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS.IN BOTH OCCASIONS I WAS BEGINNING TO GO STRAIGHT SO I WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE AFTER THE 2 SECOND BURST OF SPEED. ON SEPTEMBER 23RD, I EXPERIENCED A STICKING ACCELERATOR PEDAL EVEN AFTER THE ACCELERATOR WAS REPAIRED THROUGH A RECALL ON THE VEHICLE. I WAS TRAVELING AROUND 45 MPH WHEN APPROACHING A STOP SIGN AND WAS ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE WITH STEADY, FIRM BRAKING. ON SEPTEMBER 24TH, THE VEHICLE WAS EXAMINED BY THE DEALER. I WAS MET WITH CONSIDERABLE RESISTANCE AND DEFENSIVE COMMENTS. THE SERVICE MANAGER SHARPLY STATED TO ME THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO EVIDENCE OF ANY ACCELERATION PROBLEMS WITH TOYOTA VEHICLES AND ALL THE PROBLEMS WERE DUE TO DRIVER'S FAULTS. HE CONTINUED THAT ALL THE LAWSUITS WILL BE THROWN OUT OF COURT SOON. A WORKER PERFORMED A BRIEF DRIVE OF THE VEHICLE AND COMPUTER EXAMINATION OF THE SYSTEMS. THEY FOUND NOTHING TO INDICATE ANY SYSTEM WAS DEFECTIVE. DUE TO THE ATTITUDE OF THE SERVICE MANAGER AND THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED, WE HAVE TRADED THE VEHICLE TO A DIFFERENT DEALER AND PURCHASED ANOTHER VEHICLE AFTER A CONSIDERABLE FINANCIAL LOSS ON THIS VEHICLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING AT AN UNKNOWN LOW SPEED WHEN THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED, RESULTING IN THE CONTACT CRASHING INTO A BUILDING. THE CONTACT WAS REPORTED INJURED. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED BY THE CONTACTS INSURANCE COMPANY WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING REPAIRS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,000.
I AM HAVING A SPORADIC, CONTINUING STARTING PROBLEM WITH A 2009 TOYOTA RAV4. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO APPEAR AFTER THE CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN, THEN PARKED. ON ATTEMPTING TO RESTART THE CAR, THE ACCESSORIES (RADIO, LIGHTS, ETC.) COME ON BUT THE ENGINE DOES NOTHING. THERE IS NO SOUND FROM THE STARTER. REPEATING THE STARTING SEQUENCE HAS NO EFFECT. ATTEMPTING TO CHANGE THE "START/STOP" BY USING THE METHOD DESCRIBED IN THE USER'S MANUAL ALSO HAS NO EFFECT. IT APPEARS THAT SOMETHING HAS TO COOL DOWN BEFORE THE CAR WILL RESTART. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST FOUR TIMES IN THE YEAR I HAVE HAD THE CAR, AND ALWAYS AT UNEXPECTED TIMES. MY DEALER HAS HAD NO LUCK RECREATING THE PROBLEM, OR FINDING A SOLUTION FOR IT. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIANS PERFORMED A DIAGNOSIS BUT WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE OR DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,900. HE CRASHED INTO A VEHICLE IN FRONT WHEN THE BRAKES FAILED TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD INVESTIGATE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE IN THE DEALERS POSSESSION WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 7,600.
10 MONTH OLD TOYOTA RAV-4 CAUGHT FIRE UNDER THE HOOD WHILE SITTING IN PARKING GARAGE AND BURNED. *TR
ON JULY 17, 2010 HUSBAND AND I WERE DRIVING OUR "LEASED" 2009 TOYOTA RAV4 ON BUSY HIGHWAY LEADING TO AND FROM THE BEACH. WE WERE IN WEEKEND TRAFFIC, MOVING A CAR LENGTH EVERY 10 MINUTES. THIS SHOULD TAKE US 5 MINUTES TO DRIVE ON THIS ROAD BUT THIS DAY IT TOOK US OVER 30 MINUTES! SITTING IN TRAFFIC, MY HUSBAND'S FOOT ON BRAKE, CAR MAKES GRINDING NOISE (LIKE WE HAD CAR IN NEUTRAL REVVING THE ENGINE). CAR LUNGED FORWARD HITTING CAR IN FRONT OF US, BOUNCED BACK, LUNGED FORWARD A 2ND TIME HITTING CAR. REALIZING DAMAGE WE TURNED CAR OFF. 911 CALLED. TOOK CAR IMMEDIATELY TO DEALERSHIP, INFORMED THEM OF MISHAP, SHOWED THEM OUR SLIGHT DAMAGE TO THE CAR, GOT LOANER CAR TILL 9/8/10 WHEN INVESTIGATING COMPANY TOOK OUT BLACK BOX. INVESTIGATOR RULED IT "DRIVER ERROR". WE WERE MADE TO REMOVE CAR FROM THEIR LOT. HUSBAND NOR I WILL DRIVE CAR - IT IS A DEATH TRAP (EVEN THOUGH WE TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP WHEN RECALLED IN THE SPRING). WILL NOT LET ANYONE DRIVE AS PASSENGER IN THIS DANGEROUS CAR. WE CONTINUE TO PAY OUR $280 MONTHLY PAYMENT. WROTE TO TOYOTA PRESIDENT AND TOYOTA INVESTIGATOR. WE WOULD TAKE A REPLACEMENT (THIS IS A LEASED CAR). WE ARE "DEATHLY" AFRAID OF THIS CAR. WE WERE NOT EVEN MOVING AND THIS CAR ACCELERATED. NOW WE ARE CHARGED FOR THIS ACCIDENT. I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO GO ON IF MY HUSBAND SHOULD ONE DAY DECIDE TO DRIVE THIS CAR AND IT ACCELERATED WHILE HE WAS DRIVING. HE MAY BE KILLED AND TAKE OTHER PEOPLES' LIVES WITH HIM! AS I DROVE INTO OUR PARKING LOT AT WORK AFTER LUNCH, I WAS IDLING ENGINE WITH FOOT ON BRAKE AS I PULLED INTO A PARKING SPOT. I WAS ALREADY MAKING MY TURN INTO THE PARKING SPOT WITH FOOT ON BRAKE AND ENGINE IDLING WHEN MY CAR BEGAN TO RAPIDLY ACCELERATE. I RESPONDED BY APPLYING FOOT BRAKE AND GRABBING AND PULLING THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BUT ONLY HAD ABOUT 15 - 20 FEET BEFORE HITTING A CONCRETE WALL AT THE BAKE OF THE PARKING SPOT. I BOUGHT IT NEW LAST AUG. 09 AND IT HAS APPROX 12,432 MILES. TOYOTA TOOK IT TO QUALITY IMPORTS TOYOTA AND "INVESTIGATED" IT AND HAS FOUND NO DEFECT. I TALKED TO THE INSPECTOR OVER THE PHONE AND HE EXPLAINED THAT HE SPENT A FEW HOURS GOING THROUGH A SERIES OF TESTS ATTEMPTING TO FIND OR REPRODUCE A MALFUNCTION WITH NO SUCCESS. HE TOLD ME THAT WHILE MY REPORT IS QUITE COMMON HE HAS NEVER FOUND A DEFECT TO EXPLAIN SUDDEN UNEXPECTED ACCELERATION AND THAT HE THINKS MY CAR IS SAFE AND "HE WOULD LET HIS DAUGHTER DRIVE MY CAR." I HAVE A 2009 TOYOTA RAV4, AND TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER FOR ACCELERATOR SHIM PLACEMENT AS PER THE RECENT RECALL. SINCE THE SHIM HAS BEEN PLACED, I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING PERIODIC EPISODES OF "JACKRABBIT" STARTS FROM A STOPPED POSITION. THE ACCELERATOR IS VERY TOUCHY, IT EITHER CREATES A PROLONGED MOMENT OF HESITATION, THEN JERKS FORWARD. AFTER THE ENGINE SHUT OFF COMPLETELY, I RESTARTED THE CAR AND MANAGED TO GET HOME SAFELY. I CALLED THE DEALER, LEITH TOYOTA, AND THEY SAID TO BRING THE CAR IN RIGHT AWAY. THEY KEPT THE CAR SEVERAL DAYS AND RAN SOME TESTS, DROVE THE CAR BUT BECAUSE THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE SAME MECHANICAL OR ELECTRONIC PROBLEM, THEY COULD NOT OR WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. SO I FEEL THAT I AM LEFT WITH A VEHICLE THAT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. AFTER LEARNING THAT SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, IT IS NOW OBVIOUS THAT TOYOTA AND LEITH TOYOTA SOLD US THIS VEHICLE KNOWING THE PROBLEM EXISTED. THE GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO HOLD TOYOTA AND THE DEALERSHIPS RESPONSIBLE AND LIABLE FOR ANY ACCIDENTS THAT OCCUR FROM THIS PROBLEM AND REIMBURSE CONSUMERS THAT PURCHASED AND OWN VEHICLES THAT ARE UNSAFE DUE TO THIS MECHANICAL/ELECTRONIC PROBLEM.
ALTHOUGH MY CAR WAS FIXED IN THE TOYOTA RECALL, I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. IT IS BETTER, BUT NOT BEST. WHEN I PRESS ON THE ACCELERATOR SOMETIMES THE CAR JERKS FORWARD MUCH FASTER THAN YOU WOULD EXPECT. IT USED TO DO THIS MORE OFTEN AND TO A GREATER DEGREE, BUT STILL DOES DO IT ON OCCASION. SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN 2009 TOYOTA RAV 4 AFTER RECALL REPAIR. HAPPENED FOR THE 1ST TIME SINCE OWNERSHIP OF CAR 4 DAYS AFTER REPAIR. HAD CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 YEAR. NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS. 4 DAYS AFTER REPAIR, WE WERE WEST BOUND ON FM 1709 IN SOUTHLAKE, TX APPROACHING LIGHT JUST TO THE EAST OF HIGH SCHOOL. WE WERE APPROACHING AT APPROX 30 MPH WITH SPEED DECREASING DUE TO RED LIGHT AND OTHER CARS ALREADY STOPPED AT LIGHT. CAR RPM'S INCREASED TO THE 3,000 RANGE. HAD TO APPLY STEADY TO HARD PRESSURE TO BRAKES. CAR WAS FIGHTING TO ACCELERATE, BUT WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE SPEED DESCENT. GOT CAR TO AROUND 15 MPH. CAR LURCHED INTO 1ST GEAR, RPM'S DECREASED TO AROUND 1,000 RANGE AND WE ALL WERE THROWN FORWARD IN OUR SEATS WHEN THE CAR LURCHED. *TR

MY 2009 RAV4 HAS AN INEFFECTIVE AND DANGEROUS BRAKING SYSTEM. WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES, THE ENGINE, AT TIMES, RUNS AT A HIGHER THAN NORMAL SPEED WHEN APPROACHING A STOP LIGHT OR STOP SIGN. OFTEN I FEEL THAT I MUST MOVE THE TRANSMISSION LEVER INTO NEUTRAL TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. THE ENGINE REVS AT ABOUT 1500 OR 2000RPM WHEN SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. KEEPING THE SHIFT LEVER IN 'D' SOMETIMES CAN CAUSE EXCESSIVELY LONG STOPS. THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS SPORADICALLY AND I DON'T KNOW WHEN IT WILL HAPPEN. THIS PROBLEM STARTED SOON AFTER, WITHIN A WEEK, OF DELIVERY OF THE RAV4. THE VEHICLE WAS BRAND NEW WITH 8 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. I CALLED THE DEALER AND THE SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THAT THERE WAS NO MECHANICAL ADJUSTMENT TO CORRECT THE IDLE SPEED. I HOPED THAT THE IDLE ISSUE WOULD RESOLVE ITSELF IN TIME. IT HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE FROM THE FREQUENCY PROSPECTIVE. I AM A REALTOR AND NEED TO TAKE MY CLIENTS TO SEE HOMES. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT ANYONE WHO MAY IN THE VICINITY OF THIS DANGEROUS VEHICLE AND HAVE STOPPED USING IT FOR MY REAL ESTATE ACTIVITIES. CURRENTLY, I OWN A 2009 RAV4 THAT WAS NOT APART OF THE RECALL DUE TO THE FACT THE CAR WAS MANUFACTURED IN JAPAN. HOWEVER, I AM EXPERIENCING SUDDEN ACCELERATION IN MY VEHICLE AND TOYOTA IS DOING NOTHING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. ON A DAILY BASIS WHEN I DRIVE THE CAR AND I AM PRESSING ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL THE CAR SUDDENLY JERKS AND THE RPM'S JUMP AND JERKS ME FORWARD. I FIND THAT IT HAPPENS MORE FREQUENTLY ON A RAINY OR WET DAYS BUT DOES OCCUR EVERYDAY. THIS CAR IS A SAFETY HAZARD AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY TOYOTA THAT IT IS THE WAY I AM DRIVING HOWEVER, MY HUSBAND DRIVES MY CAR AND EXPERIENCES THE SAME THING WHEN STEPPING ON THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. TO BEGIN, MY CAR HAS ALREADY HAD THE TOYOTA RECALL "FIX" AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN FINE. I WAS DRIVING MY TOYOTA RAV4 (2009) AND APPROACHING A FOUR WAY STOP. WHEN I WENT TO HIT THE BRAKES, THERE WAS A SLIGHT GRINDING NOISE. THE CAR SLOWED A BIT BUT DID NOT STOP AND KEPT ON MOVING THROUGH THE STOP SIGN. I ENDED UP GOING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION (LUCKILY NO ONE WAS COMING) AND COMING TO A STOP ALMOST 50 FEET PAST. MY HUSBAND DROVE THE CAR HOME AND WE LATER TOOK IT TO THE DEALER (NO OTHER INCIDENTS THEN). THE DEALER INSPECTED THE BRAKES AND ACCELERATION BUT COULD NOT FIND A CAUSE. THEY KEPT THE CAR FOR SEVERAL DAYS BUT ENDED UP RETURNING IT TO US AND SAYING IT IS FINE, AS THEY COULD NOT FIND A SPECIFIC CAUSE TO THIS INCIDENT.
