TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE SEAT CUSHION HEATER GENERATED EXCESSIVE HEAT. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE SEAT BACK AND HEATING ELEMENT WERE BOTH REPLACED PREVIOUSLY DUE TO THE HEATING ELEMENT GENERATING INADEQUATE HEAT. THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V743000 (SEATS). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,815.
ONE WHEEL STUD ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WAS BROKEN. APPARENTLY IT WAS MADE OF POOR STEEL MATERIAL. I CHECKED INTERNET AND FOUND THIS PROBLEM WAS ALSO REPORTED BY MANY OTHERS. TO OUR DISAPPOINTMENT, SO THE MANUFACTURE AND DEALERS ARE STILL NOT ACCEPTING THE CAUSATION. I AM THINKING BOYCOTT TOYOTA SINCE THEY ARE USING CHEAP POOR PARTS MADE IN CHINA. *TR

THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBERS: 12V373000 (SUSPENSION) AND13V383000 (SUSPENSION) BUT WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT THE PARTS NEEDED TO COMPLETE BOTH REPAIRS WERE NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT RECEIVED THE NOTICE MONTHS AGO. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALSO CONTACTED AND COULD NOT PROVIDE A REASONABLE TIMEFRAME FOR WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD RECEIVE THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V373000 (SUSPENSION: REAR). THE CONTACT WAS DISSATISFIED WITH THE REMEDY. THE RECALL REMEDY STATES THE TIE ROD NUT WOULD BE INSPECTED FOR LOOSENESS. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED BECAUSE IF AT THE TIME OF INSPECTION THE TIE ROD NUT IS NOT LOOSE IT CAN BECOME LOOSE IN THE FUTURE CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE CONTACTS CONCERNS AND STATED THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE TO BE TAKEN IN FOR INSPECTION AND THEY WOULD NOT REPLACE THE TIE ROD UNLESS THEY FOUND IT TO BE LOOSE. THE CONTACT WAS FEARFUL OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE ESPECIALLY BECAUSE HE TAKES FREQUENT LONG TRIPS. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED.

TL-THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT RECEIVED TWO RECALL NOTICES; RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 13V383000 (SUSPENSION) AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 12V373000 (SUSPENSION). HE WAS ADVISED BY A DEALER THAT HIS VIN WAS ASSOCIATED WITH ONE OF THE TWO RECALLS. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT HAD TO RESCHEDULE TWO ADDITIONAL APPOINTMENTS NONE OF WHICH WERE HONORED SINCE THE PARTS WERE ONLY AVAILABLE PRIOR TO THE APPOINTMENTS BUT NO LONGER AVAILABLE WHEN HE ARRIVED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF SEVERAL ATTEMPTS MADE TO HONOR THE RECALL. THERE ARE NO FAILURES AT THIS TIME. RK UPDATED 3/28/14*CN *TR

THE REMEDY PART WAS ON A MASSIVE BACK ORDER FOR AN UNREASONABLE LENGTH OF TIME. THE CONTACT WAS DISPLEASED TO KNOW IT HAD BEEN OVER THREE MONTHS SINCE WAITING FOR THE PART AND WAS CONCERNED OF THE SAFETY ISSUE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED FAILURE AT THIS TIME.
LEAKING WATER PUMP, REPLACED AT 60,000 MILE SERVICE INTERVAL. *TR
I RECEIVED A SAFETY NOTICE ABOUT MY CAR LIKE 2 MONTHS AGO. AND I STILL HAVENT RECEIVED THE OTHER LETTER SAYING THE PART WAS READY SO I CAN GET MY CAR FIXED. I TRAVEL ALOT WITH MY KIDS AND EVERY TIME I USE MY CAR I FEAR SOMETHING MIGHT HAPPEN. ACCORDING TO THE LETTER SENT. WE WERE SUPPOSE TO GET ANOTHER LETTER SENT OUT TO TELL US THE PART WAS READY AND WE CAN GET THIS PART PUT IN OUR CAR. BUT ITS ALREADY NOVEMBER AND NOTHING YET. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL AND MERGED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED ON THE FRONT SUSPENSION AND WAS CAUSED BY SHREDDED LUG NUTS. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE WHEEL, TIRE, LUG NUTS, BUMPER, LAMP, THE ROTOR LOWER CONTROL ARM, HUB ASSEMBLY, SEAL, BALL JOINT KNUCKLES, BRAKE PADS AND THE AXLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,458 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. UPDATED 9/12/12 *CN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER ROTATING THE TIRES, SHE NOTICED THAT ALL FOUR OF RIMS WERE CRACKED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. UPDATED 07/02/12 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAD A TIRE THAT WOULDN'T AIR. WHEN SHE PURCHASED A USED TIRE, SHE DISCOVERED THAT TIRE WOULDN'T HOLD AIR EITHER. THE TIRE STORE INFORMED THE CONSUMER THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE RIM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE PARKED, THE CONTACT NOTICED THE STEERING WHEEL HAD BECOME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER. THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. AFTER RESTARTING THE VEHICLE THE POWER STEERING RESUMED NORMAL FUNCTIONALITY. THE FAILURE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING BUT WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A CRASH WHERE THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE AIR BAGS WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 37,230 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 45,000. S10 APPROPRIATE HANDLING- LETTER TO THE SECRETARY FROM RE COPY OF LETTER ADDRESSED TO MR JAMES LENTZ, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF TOYOTA MOTOR SALES, REGARDING SAFETY PROBLEMS WITH THE 2010 TOYOTA RAV 4 *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN THERE WAS SNOW ON THE STREET WITH SLIPPER ROAD CONDITIONS, THE ABS ENGAGED, WHICH MADE THE BRAKES INOPERABLE. THE CONSUMER STATED SHE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, ONLY TO BE TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL SITUATIONS, WHERE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP WHEN THE ABS ENGAGED. ON ONE OCCASION, THE CONSUMER HAD TO PUSH THE BRAKE ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND EVENTUALLY LANDED IN THE MIDDLE INTERSECTION OF ONCOMING TRAFFIC. THE SECOND TIME, SHE ALMOST REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE, WHEN SUDDENLY THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WHEN SHE APPLIED THE BRAKE. THE ONLY WAY, SHE WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE, WAS BY TURNING INTO ANOTHER LANE WHICH CAUSED THE ABS TO GO OFF WHICH RENDERED THE BRAKES TO WORK AGAIN. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV-4. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 11V113000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TECHNICIANS COULD NOT DETERMINE IF THE FLOOR MATS IN THE VEHICLE WERE ALL-WEATHER FLOOR MATS OR NOT AND THEREFORE, DID NOT REPLACE THE FLOOR MATS AS STATED IN THE RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 15,444.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. THE CONTACT WAS STOPPED AT A LIGHT WHEN THE ENGINE RPMS INCREASED TO 5000 ABNORMALLY. THE CONTACT PUT THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND ATTEMPTED TO TURN OFF THE VEHICLE, BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHUT OFF IMMEDIATELY. ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY SHUT OFF, THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE BACK ON AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO DRIVE NORMALLY. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE BUT WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE DEFECT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 16,000.
THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE WHEEL STUDS THAT APPEARS TO BE QUITE COMMON ON RAV4'S OF SEVERAL YEARS. THE WHEEL STUDS BREAK QUITE OFTEN AND THE TOYOTA AND THE TOYOTA DEALERS BLAME IT ON THE TORQUE OF THE LUG NUTS. THIS IS DEFINITELY NOT THE CASE SINCE I'VE HAD TWO BREAK OFF SINCE I PURCHASED THE CARD NEW IN SEPTEMBER, 2009. THE FIRST BROKE OFF AT APPROXIMATELY 8,000 MILE AND SECOND BROKE OF AT 24,000 MILES WHILE I WAS DRIVE ON AN INTERSTATE. THE 24,000 MILE ONE BROKE AND THE IT WAS 41/2 MONTHS AFTER THE TIRES WERE ROTATED. IN SEARCHING THE INTERNET, THERE ARE MULTIPLE PROBLEMS AND I BELIEVE THIS IS DEFINITELY SOMETHING IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THESE STUD WHERE THEY ARE USING INFERIOR PRODUCT TO MANUFACTURE THEM. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION ESPECIALLY IF THE CAR OWNER IS NOT FREQUENTLY CHECKING THEIR WHEELS TO SEE IF THIS IS HAPPENING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH, THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE TIRE WAS FLAT. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE RIMS WOULD SEPARATE FROM THE TIRE AND DETACH. THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED; HOWEVER, THE RIM WAS REPLACED BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I WAS STOPPED AT A STOPLIGHT AT ABOUT 4:00 PM WITH MY FOOT FULLY ON THE BRAKE. WHILE WAITING FOR THE LIGHT TO CHANGE, THE CAR WENT INTO A HIGH IDLE. I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL FIRMLY, BUT THE CAR WAS LURCHING, TRYING TO ACCELERATE. I PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND IT MADE A HORRIBLE NOISE. IT STAYED IN HIGH IDLE FOR SEVERAL MORE SECONDS, BUT THEN SEEMED TO KICK ITSELF OUT OF THAT IDLE. I THOUGHT THE CAR MAY HAVE DIED. THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, SO I GENTLY PUT IT INTO DRIVE (AGAIN THINKING THAT IT MAY HAVE DIED), BUT IT WAS STILL RUNNING, SO I DROVE ACROSS THE INTERSECTION, WENT TO A PARKING LOT, AND CALLED THE DEALER. THE SERVICE ADVISOR SAID THAT I SHOULD HAVE THE CAR TOWED IN (AT MY EXPENSE), WHICH WAS NOT ACCEPTABLE TO ME. I CALLED THE TOYOTA 800 NUMBER AND THEY ALSO SAID THAT THEY WOULD NOT PAY FOR ANY OF THE EXPENSES. THEY SAID THAT IF SOMETHING WAS FOUND WRONG WITH THE CAR, THEY WOULD REIMBURSE ME. I DROVE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT NIGHT. THE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD NEED TO KEEP THE CAR UNTIL THE REGIONAL MANAGER COULD COME, WHICH WOULD BE SEVERAL DAYS. THEY CALLED ME THE NEXT AFTERNOON TO SAY THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAD RUN ALL TESTS, AND FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE CAR, AND THAT THEY HAD NEVER HEARD OF THE RAV 4 HAVING THIS ISSUE. THEY SAID THEY COULD KEEP THE CAR UNTIL THE REGIONAL MANAGER COULD COME, WHICH WAS NOW ESTIMATED TO BE 2-3 WEEKS. THEY SAID HE WOULD RUN THE EXACT SAME TESTS ON THE VEHICLE AS THEY HAD RUN. I WENT AND PICKED UP THE VEHICLE. I WENT INTO THE DEALERSHIP YESTERDAY AND MET WITH THE SERVICE AND SALES MANAGERS. THEY ADVISED ME THAT THOUGH THEY WERE NOT SAYING THEY DIDN'T BELIEVE ME ABOUT THE INCIDENT, THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, SO THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE THEY COULD DO, EXCEPT TO HELP ME GET OUT OF MY LEASE AND INTO ANOTHER TOYOTA VEHICLE. I OPTED TO TRADE MY RAV 4 IN AND AM NOW LEASING A CAMRY. *TR
AT APPROXIMATELY 18:30 ON DECEMBER 27, 2011, I EXPERIENCED AN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION EVENT IN MY 2010 TOYOTA RAV4. I WAS STOPPING FOR A RED LIGHT ON PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY IN SEAL BEACH, CALIFORNIA AT THE CORNER OF FIRST STREET WHEN I NOTICED IT WAS DIFFICULT TO APPLY THE BRAKE, AND THE CAR DID NOT APPEAR TO WANT TO STOP. I APPLIED THE BRAKE MORE FORCEFULLY AND WAS EVENTUALLY ABLE TO STOP IN THE LEFT HAND TURN LANE, HOWEVER THE CAR KEPT LURCHING FORWARD AS IF IT WANTED TO BREAK FREE OF THE BRAKE. HAVING HEARD THE WIDESPREAD PUBLICITY REGARDING THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION PROBLEM IN TOYOTA VEHICLES, AND HAVING PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM ON ONE OCCASION OVER A YEAR EARLIER, I THOUGHT THIS MIGHT BE THE ISSUE. I PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND THE ENGINE IMMEDIATELY REVVED UP TO AN ALARMING RATE. I TURNED OFF THE IGNITION IN PANIC BEFORE I WAS ABLE TO LOOK AT THE TACHOMETER. HOWEVER, JUDGING BY THE SOUND AND LATER EXPERIMENTATION WITH REVVING WHILE PARKED, I BELIEVE THE RPM MUST HAVE BEEN IN THE 4000-5000 RANGE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT. I WAS PARTICULARLY SHAKEN BY THIS EVENT BECAUSE I HAD ALREADY HAD THE RECALL SERVICE PERFORMED THAT WAS SUPPOSEDLY INTENDED TO ADDRESS THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE. THIS RECALL SERVICE WAS PERFORMED MAY 10, 2011 AT DESERT TOYOTA IN TUCSON, ARIZONA. I HAD EXPERIENCE THE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION ISSUE ONCE BEFORE, BUT IT WAS NOT NEARLY AS DRAMATIC. I DO NOT RECALL THE DETAILS, BUT IT WAS IN SOUTHERN ARIZONA IN EARLY 2011 AND MY MEMORY IS THAT TAPPING THE ACCELERATOR AND BRAKE PEDALS RESTORED THE CAR'S OPERATION TO NORMAL FAIRLY QUICKLY. I WAS LITTLE CONCERNED ABOUT IT HAPPENING AGAIN SINCE THE RECALL SERVICE HAD BEEN PERFORMED. *TR
WITH THE VEHICLE IN PARK AND THE BRAKE PEDAL DEPRESSED, THE ENGINE REVED IMMEDIATELY TO AROUND 6000 RPM WHEN STARTED. I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE WITHOUT SHIFTING OUT OF PARK, GOT OUT OF THE CAR, AND VISUALLY CHECKED THE FLOORMAT. IT WAS NOT TOUCHING THE THROTTLE PEDAL AND THE THROTTLE PEDAL DID NOT APPEAR TO BE DEPRESSED. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 1 MINUTE I STARTED THE ENGINE A SECOND TIME AND THE SAME THING OCCURRED. I THEN WAITED APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES, PUMPED THE THROTTLE PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES, THEN STARTED THE VEHICLE A THIRD TIME. THIS TIME THE VEHICLE STARTED NORMALLY (ENGINE IDLING). I THEN DROVE HOME WITHOUT FURTHER REVING ISSUES AND HAVE NOT HAD ANY REOCCURENCE SINCE THE INCIDENT DATE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE THE NEXT DAY AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A FLOORMAT ISSUE, AND MY DRIVERSIDE FLOORMAT WAS REMOVED BY THE DEALERSHIP. I DISAGREE WITH THIS ASSESSMENT. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT BEFORE I HAD THE REVING ISSUE UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, MY LAST INTERACTION WITH THE VEHICLE WAS TO HAVE MY FOOT COMPLETELY OFF THE GAS PEDAL AS I WAS STEERING THE CAR INTO A PARKING SPACE, WHEN I WAS USING ONLY THE BRAKE PEDAL TO MODERATE MY SPEED, WITH NO THROTTLE PEDAL PRESSURE BEING APPLIED BY ME, AND WITH THE ENGINE IDLING, AS IS NORMAL. DO NOT SEE HOW THIS COULD BE A RESIDUAL STUCK THROTTLE PEDAL ISSUE WHEN I RETURNED TO MY AUTOMOBLE AND STARTED THE ENGINE TO DRIVE AWAY. THE ONLY OTHER FACTOR WHICH MAY (OR MAY NOT) BE RELEVENT WAS THAT WHEN I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF AFTER PARKING, I DID NOT FIRST TURN THE RADIO OFF, WHICH I USUALLY DO. I BELIEVE I WAS TUNED TO A SATELLITE STATION AT THAT TIME (XM). *TR
ON A PUBLIC MAIN STREET TRAVELING 35-45 MPH, STARTED TO BRAKE TO STOP FOR A LIGHT CHANGING FROM YELLOW TO RED. AS THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED, THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV TO 5000 RPM. THE BRAKES WERE HOLDING BACK THE CAR, BUT THE ACCELERATION WAS PERSISTENT. THE CAR BARELY STOPPED BEFORE ENTERING THE INTERSECTION, BUT THE ENGINE REMAINED AT WHAT APPEARED TO BE FULL THROTTLE. I SHIFTED THE STOPPED VEHICLE INTO PARK ON THIS AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE/TRANSAXLE MADE A SIGNIFICANT "BANG" AS IT WAS SHIFTED, THE ENGINE STOPPED REVVING AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL SHOT BACK TOWARD MY LEG HITTING MY ANKLE. AT NO TIME DID MY RIGHT FOOT LEAVE THE BRAKE PEDAL. IN FACT, I WAS PRESSING THE BRAKE WITH ALL MY STRENGTH TO COMPLETE THE STOP. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAS BEEN REPORTED BY FAMILY MEMBERS. IT WAS MY FIRST DIRECT EXPERIENCE WITH IT AND THE VEHICLE IS JUST OVER A YEAR OLD. IT HAS BEEN INTO THE DEALER FOR THIS REASON AND RECEIVED A RECALL UPGRADE SEVERAL MONTHS AGO DURING A ROUTINE FREE MAINTENANCE VISIT. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA DIRECTLY TO TERMINATE MY LEASE ON THIS AND ANOTHER EXACT SAME MAKE/MODEL/YEAR LEASED THE SAME DAY. I FEEL THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT FIXED THE ISSUES FROM 2010 AND THAT ADJUSTMENTS TO THE FLOOR MATS AND ACCELERATOR PEDAL ARE NOT ADDRESSING WHAT IS REALLY WRONG. AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP FROM 45 MPH, THE CAR CONTINUED TO MOVE AT THE SAME SPEED. I INCREASED PRESSURE ON THE THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE CAR DID NOT SLOW DOWN. FINALLY, AFTER ABOUT THREE SECONDS, THE CAR SEEMED TO DOWNSHIFT, AND THE BRAKES ENGAGED. I ENDED UP HALFWAY THROUGH THE INTERSECTION. THE CONDITIONS WERE WARM AND DRY, AND THE TRAFFIC WAS LIGHT. THIS IS A STOCK CAR WITH NO MODIFICATIONS. WE HAD ALREADY TAKEN THE CAR IN FOR THE RECALL ADJUSTMENTS TO THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE FLOOR MATS AS DIRECTED BY TOYOTA IN 2010 AND 2011. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, IT SEEMED TO ME THAT THE LACK OF BRAKING WAS NOT MECHANICAL, BUT ELECTRONIC. IT SEEMED THAT THE BRAKES WERE LOCKED OUT WHILE THE CAR CONTINUED TO DRIVE FORWARD AT THE SAME SPEED. WHEN THE CAR DOWNSHIFTED AND REVVED A LITTLE, THE BRAKES SUDDENLY CAME BACK ONLINE, AND WE CAME TO A STOP. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE HAD A PROBLEM LIKE THIS. I WENT TO ROTATE THE TIRES FOR THE FIRST TIME ON MY 2010 RAV4 2.5 V6. I HAD NEVER HAD THE TIRES OFF BEFORE. THE ONLY TIME THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN OFF WAS WHEN I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AFTER HAVING THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 MONTHS TO HAVE THE FRONT 2 WHEELS RE-BALANCED BECAUSE OF A SLIGHT SHAKING IN THE STEERING WHEEL. THIS FIXED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER WHEN I WENT TO ROTATE 4 TIRES, 2 OF THE FRONT LUG BOLTS BROKE. WHEN I INSPECTED THEM I COULD SEE THAT A COUPLE MORE LOOKED LIKE THEY WERE ALSO STRETCHED BETWEEN THE THREADS, MOST LIKELY FROM OVER TORQUING. KNOWING THAT THEY WOULD LIKELY BREAK ALSO, I DECIDED TO REINSTALL THE WHEEL ANYWAY AND SEE AT WHAT TORQUE POINT THE OTHERS WOULD BREAK. THE ONES THAT ALREADY WERE STRETCHED BROKE AT 85 FT LBS. 2 OTHERS THAT WERE NOT VISIBLY STRETCHED BROKE AT 90 & 95 FT.LBS. I'VE WORKED ON AND RESTORED CARS FOR 50 YEARS. I KNOW WHAT WHEEL STUDS WILL TAKE BEFORE THEY BREAK. I'VE NEVER HAD 13 MM OR 1/2 INCH WHEEL BOLTS BREAK AT THIS LOW TORQUE. THE REPLACEMENT BOLTS, WAGNER BRAKE BRAND, ARE MARKED AS A METRIC 10.9 STRENGTH BOLT, EQUIVALENT TO A SAE GRADE 8. THESE ARE RATED TO TAKE +/- 100 FT. LBS. TORQUE. THE STOCK TOYOTA BOLTS HAVE NO MARKINGS AND THEY RECOMMEND 80 FT LBS AS THE AMOUNT TO TIGHTEN TO. I BELIEVE 8.8 ARE STOCK STRENGTH BOLTS WHICH WOULD TAKE 80 FT LBS, BUT THESE ARE INFERIOR IF THEY ARE 8.8 AND LEAVE NO MARGIN FOR ERROR (OVER 80 FT LBS). SOMEONE USING AN IMPACT WRENCH COULD EASILY OVER STRESS THESE INFERIOR BOLTS. I HAVE SAVED ALL 20 BOLTS I REPLACED. I BELIEVE IF THEY WERE INDEPENDENTLY TESTED IT WOULD SHOW THAT THEY ARE UNSAFE FOR THESE CARS. FROM WHAT I HAVE FOUND ON THE INTERNET, THIS SEEMS TO BE WIDE SPREAD ON MOST 2009 AND 2010 RAV4 CARS. IT WOULD BE INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THESE 2 YEARS BOLTS TEST AT COMPARED TO THE 2012 AND LATER MODELS. IT MIGHT SHOW THAT TOYOTA KNEW THEY HAD A BREAKAGE PROBLEM.

THE FRONT HEADRESTS ON THIS VEHICLE, BOTH PASSENGER-SIDE AND DRIVER-SIDE, ARE SITUATED MUCH TOO FAR FORWARD. THE HEADREST PUSHES ON THE MIDDLE OF ONE'S HEAD, CAUSING A CHIN-FORWARD / HEAD-FORWARD POSTURE, WHICH IS UNNATURAL AND ERGONOMICALLY INCORRECT. THERE ARE NUMEROUS FORUMS AND MESSAGE BOARDS ON THE INTERNET ON WHICH DRIVERS OF NEWER VEHICLES SUCH AS THIS ONE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT EXTREME PAIN BEING CAUSED BY THESE HEADRESTS. IN MY CASE IN PARTICULAR, THE MALPOSITIONING OF THE HEADREST IS CAUSING VERTEBRAE IN MY NECK, ALONG WITH MY UPPER TWO RIBS, TO BE PUSHED OUT OF PLACE. THIS CONDITION CAUSES EXTREME PAIN, HEADACHES, AND FATIGUE. ADDITIONALLY, THE MIDDLE OF THE HEAD BEING PUSHED SO FAR FORWARD, AND NO SUPPORT FOR THE NECK, WOULD SEEM TO ME A VERY DANGEROUS COMBINATION IF A HIGH-SPEED CRASH WERE TO OCCUR. ON AUGUST 4, 2011, I TOOK THE RAV4 TO QUALITY IMPORTS, A DEALER IN FORT WALTON BEACH, FLORIDA. THE DEALER WANTED ME TO SEE TOYOTA'S SIDE OF THE STORY. WITH CONSIDERABLE EFFORT ON HIS PART, HE UNINSTALLED THE VERY HEAVY SEMI RIGID AFTERMARKET RUBBER MAT AND REINSTALLED IT TO REST ON THE ACCELERATOR. HE THEN SAID, "THIS IS PROBABLY WHAT HAPPENED." THIS VERY HEAVY SEMI RIGID FLOOR MAT IS PRECISELY CONTOURED TO SNUGLY FIT IN THE EXACT CONTOURS OF THE FLOOR BOARD. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR THIS MAT TO MOVE, BECAUSE IT FITS SO SNUGLY WITHIN THE CONFINES OF THE MOLDED CONTOURS. THE RUBBER MAT HAS NEVER MOVED IN OVER 6,000 MILES OF DRIVING. WITH A TOTALLY DEAD BATTERY YOU CANNOT UNLOCK THE REAR DOOR WITH THE REMOTE ENTRY, AND THERE IS NO KEY IN THE DOOR TO ALLOW YOU TO UNLOCK THE REAR HATCH DOOR, WHERE YOUR JUMPER CABLES WOULD BE STORED. THUS YOUR JUMPER CABLES ARE NOT ACCESSIBLE FOR YOUR USE, UNLESS YOU CLIMB OVER THE REAR SEATS AND MANAGE TO LIFE THE FLOOR PANEL AND RETRIEVE THE CABLES. CONSUMER WRITES IN COMPLAINT OF THE PEDAL LOCATION *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKE AND ACCELERATOR PEDALS WERE DESIGNED TOO CLOSE TOGETHER WHICH CAUSED HIS FOOT TO BECOME TRAPPED UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE CONSUMER BELIEVED THE BRAKE PEDAL SHOULD BE REDESIGNED TO ALLOW FOR MORE FOOT CLEARANCE AND PROVIDE SOME LIGHTING TO THE FLOOR AREA. *JB

THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, SO WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER. GASOLINE HAD ENTERED THE GAS TANK VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM AND HAD RUINED IT. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THIS WAS DUE TO A DESIGN ISSUE AND IS IN THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING A NEW, REDESIGNED GAS TANK AND VAPOR RECOVERY SYSTEM. WHAT WAS TROUBLING TO ME WAS THAT THE VAPOR RECOVERY FILTER TANK, ABOUT 3-4 GALLONS OF CHARCOAL, WAS FILLED WITH GASOLINE. I BELIEVE THIS TO HAVE BEEN A SAFETY HAZARD WORTH REPORTING TO YOU. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 TOYOTA RAV 4. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH AND APPROACHING A RED LIGHT, THE CONTACT WAS APPLIED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL BUT THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKE PEDAL BECAME VERY STIFF. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO SHIFT THE GEAR INTO NEUTRAL AND STOP THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND SWITCHED THE GEAR TO PARK. AFTER TURNING THE IGNITION ON, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED AS NORMAL. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THE CONTACT NEEDED TO GO THROUGH ARBITRATION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 6,598.
I WAS AT A COMPLETE STOP AT A RED LIGHT WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE, I WAS STOPPED FOR AT LEAST 10 OR MORE SECONDS. WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE THE RAV4 STARTED TO MOVE. I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL, BUT THE CAR CONTINUED FORWARD. I STRUCK THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. THE ENGINE WAS REVVING LOUDLY. THE CAR CONTINUED FORWARD. I THEN PLACED BOTH FEET ON THE BRAKE PEDAL IN AN ATTEMPT TO STOP THE CAR,I STRUCK THE CAR A SECOND TIME. AT WHICH POINT I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR IN PARK. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO REV FOR A SECOND THEN STOPPED.I MOVED THE CAR A SHORT DISTANCE TO A PARKING LOT. AN ACCIDENT REPORT WAS FILED WITH THE POLICE,AND THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. TOYOTA WAS CONTACTED AND I AM AWAITING SPX SERVICE SOLUTIONS /EAA TO INSPECT THE CAR AND DOWNLOAD INFORMATION FROM THE EVENT DATA RECORDER. THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY,WEATHER CLEAR,AIR TEMP. I WAS DRIVING ALONE INTO THE GERMONDS VILLAGE CONDOMINIUM DEVELOPMENT LOCATED OFF EASTLYN DRIVE NEAR ROUTE 304 IN BARDONIA, NY. I DROVE SLOWLY INTO THE COMPLEX PARKING LOT. I TURNED RIGHT TO PARK IN A SPACE IN FRONT OF A GARBAGE COLLECTION STRUCTURE. WHILE ENTERING THIS SPACE, I WAS DRIVING VERY SLOWLY. I PLACED MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE TO STOP WHEN SUDDENLY THE CAR ACCELERATED, MADE A 'CHANGING-OF-GEAR TYPE SOUND' AND CATAPULTED INTO THE GARBAGE STRUCTURE AT A VERY HIGH RATE OF SPEED. THE STRUCTURE CAUSED THE CAR TO STOP. I PUT THE CAR INTO PARK AND SHUT THE ENGINE OFF. NOTABLY, NEITHER THE DRIVER SIDE OR PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED. I WAS SHAKEN AND VERY SCARED BUT NOT INJURED. THE CAR SUSTAINED HEAVY DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END, FRONT RIGHT SIDE AND THE RIGHT FRONT TIRE. THE STRUCTURE (BRICK SIDES WITH GARAGE DOOR IN MIDDLE) ALSO SUSTAINED HEAVY DAMAGE ESPECIALLY THE BRICKS ON THE RIGHT SIDE THAT CRUMBLED. I NOTIFIED TOYOTA AND AWAIT THEIR ENGINEERING INSPECTION.
ACCELERATED PROBLEM: I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM HAVING MAINTANCE WORK COMPLETED ON CAR. MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS THAT TOYOTA HAD DONE SOME THING THAT CREATED THIS PROBLEM. I WAS COASTING AND BRAKING COMING UP TO STOP LIGHT, WHICH WAS RED, I WAS GOING ABOUT 1-2 MILES PER HOUR, WHEN RPM'S WENT VERY HIGH. COULD NOT STOP CAR WITH ONE FOOT ON BRAKE, NEEDED TO USE BOTH FEET ON BRAKE PEDDLE TO GET CONTROL OF CAR, ALMOST HIT CAR IN FRONT OF ME. I WAS ABLE TO STOP CAR APPRX 1-2 FEET FROM CAR IN FRONT OF ME. BRAKES OR TIRES WERE MAKING VERY LOUD NOISE. MY WIFE SAID THAT TACT WAS STRAIGHT UP, WHICH IS IN THE AREA OF 7-8 THOUSAND RPM'S. MOTOR WAS VERY LOUD. ONCE I HAD CONTROL OF CAR I PUT THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND CAR WAS STILL ROARING, I TURNED THE MOTOR OF. WHEN LIGHT TURNED GREEN AND CARS IN FRONT OF ME PULLED AWAY, I AGAIN STARTED MY CAR UP AND APPEARED TO RUNNING NORMAL. THE ONLY THING THAT I SAW WAS DIFFERENT WAS A SYMBOL CAME ON DASH BOARD, IN BOTTOM RIGHT SIDE. IT WAS IN YELLOW WITH A CAR AND WAVY TIRE TRACKS WHICH I WAS TOLD WAS THE ABS SYSTEM. THIS LIGHT STAYED ON FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AND WENT OUT. ON 01/17/2011, I TOOK THE CAR BACK TO TOYOTA OF LAKE CITY AND THEY SAID THAT EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT AND COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM WITH CAR AND COULD NOT GET TO DUPLICATE AGAIN. I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD TAKE CAR HOME, BUT FOUND OUT LATER THAT ACCORDING TO TOYOTA RULES, I SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE CAR HOME. TECH WAS TRYING TO GET A HOLD OF TOYOTA HEAD QTRS, BUT I FOUND OUT LATER, TOYOTA HEAD QTRS WAS CLOSED. NOT HAPPY WITH THIS AND ASKED FOR FURTHER TESTS. I BROUGHT THE CAR BACK AGAIN ON 01/26/2011 AND WAS TOLD THAT FIELD TECHNICIAN RAN FURTHER TESTS ON CAR, TOYOTA HAD THE CAR FOR 2 DAYS. I WAS TOLD THAT EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT AND NOTHING FURTHER COULD BE DONE. THEY NEEDED THE CAR TO ACCELERATE AGAIN, WHILE TOYOTA HAD THE CAR TO DETERMINE WHAT WENT WRONG.
2010 TOYOTA RAV4 LIMITED EDITION. THE LOW PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON IN THE DASHBOARD WHEN ALL FOUR TIRES ARE PROPERLY INFLATED. TRI COUNTY TOYOTA BLAMED IT ON THE TIRE PRESSURE IN THE SPARE. THIS PROBLEM IS RECURRING AND CAUSES ONE TO SECOND GUESS THEIR TIRES. THEY DO NOT HAVE A SOLUTION TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. *TR
