REAR DIFFERENTIAL ROTTED TO THE POINT OF LEAKING. I HAVE SEEN MANY REPORTS OF THIS ONLINE, TOYOTA TUNDRAS AS WELL, WHICH HAVE THE SAME DIFFERENTIAL AND FRAME, ARE UNDER RECALL. *TR
THE FRAME ON MY VEHICLE CRACKED, AND THIS CAUSED THE TOP OF THE STRUT TO COME UP THROUGH THE FLOORBOARD. THE TOYOTA DEALER, BODY SHOP, AND INDEPENDENT INSURANCE APPRAISER SAY THAT THIS WAS NOT CAUSED BY AN ACCIDENT OR OTHER IMPACT. THEY SAID THE FRAME HAD METAL FATIGUE AND SIMPLY FAILED. THIS POSES A SERIOUS HAZARD IF A LIGHTLY DRIVEN VEHICLE SUCH AS MINE, WELL-CARED FOR AND DRIVEN IN A SUBURBAN SETTING, THE FRAME WOULD CRACK IN 8 YEARS. I SAW ONLINE THAT THERE WAS A FRAME RECALL FOR 2001-2003 TUNDRAS AND SEQUOIAS (WHICH SHARE THE SAME FRAME). THE RECALL WAS FOR ONLY 18 STATES WHERE THERE IS HEAVY SNOW, CAUSING THE FRAMES TO RUST THROUGH. TOYOTA WAS FORCED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FRAME. I BELIEVE THAT THE FRAMES WERE FAULTY FROM A MANUFACTURING DEFECT FOR THIS TO OCCUR. I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE THIS INFORMATION AS IT MAY BE PART OF A MORE WIDE-SPREAD PROBLEM THAT TOYOTA IS NOT TELLING ANYONE ABOUT. *TR
I NOTICED OIL LEAKING FROM REAR AXLE HOUSING. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE I WAS TOLD THAT THE AXLE HOUSING IS LEAKING DUE TO DEFECTIVE WELDS AND MUST BE REPLACED, IT CANNOT BE REPAIRED. AT THE SAME TIME I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE FRAME HAS ROTTED FROM THE INSIDE OUT DUE TO DEFECTIVE OR INADEQUATE FACTORY RUSTPROOFING. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS PROBLEM IS PERVASIVE IN TOYOTA SEQUOIAS WHICH HAVE THE SAME FRAME AS TOYOTA TUNDRAS. TOYOTA HAS RECALLED THE TUNDRAS AND REPLACED THE FRAMES BUT TO DATE REFUSES TO DO THE SAME FOR SEQUOIAS. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN DETERMINED TO BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE AT THIS TIME. ASIDE FROM THE DEFECTS STATED ABOVE THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. *KB

FRAME IS RUSTING THROUGH, MAKING VEHICLE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. *TR
BROUGHT VEHICLE IN FOR SERVICE/SCHEDULE MAINTENANCE WHICH WAS NOT COMPLETED; WAS ADVISED BY SERVICE TECHNICIAN THAT THERE WAS A HOLE ROTTED IN THE FRAME BEHIND THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT WHEEL. WAS ADVISED TO CALL CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER & OPEN A CASE NUMBER WITH THEM. WAS ADVISED SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH THE TUNDRA & TACOMA MODELS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN IN FOR A ROUTINE MAINTENANCE WHEN SHE WAS ADVISED THAT THE FRONT FRAME WAS RUSTED, CORRODED AND EXHIBITED A HOLE IN THE FRAME. THE DEALER THEN ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO OPERATE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE WHO OFFERED HER A CREDIT TO PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE BUT THE CONTACT DECLINED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,903. THE CONSUMER STATED THE CHECK ENGINE, VSC AND TRAC LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. UPDATED 06/05/12
ONE DAY THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, BRAKE, ABS LIGHTS ALL CAME ON THE DASH, SHORTLY AFTER THIS HAPPENED WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL STATING THIS EXACT PROBLEM. SO I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR THEM TO LOOK AT IT AND FIX. THE FIRST TIME I DROPPED IT OFF FOR THE DAY THEY CALLED AFTER AND SAID THE MACHINE TO TEST THE VEHICLE WAS DOWN, AND THAT IT WOULD BE A DAY OR TWO BEFORE IT WAS REPAIRED, WELL I NEEDED MY VEHICLE SO I WENT A PICKED IT UP. ABOUT A MONTH LATER I MADE ANOTHER APPOINTMENT AND RETURNED TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY FINALLY TESTED MY VEHICLE AND PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT MY VEHICLE DID NOT FIT THE CRITERIA FOR VIN IDENTIFICATION. I REALLY DO NOT KNOW HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE CONSIDERING ALL THE INFORMATION STATED ON THE RECALL IS EXACTLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY VEHICLE. AFTER DAYS OF RESEARCH I HAVE LEARNED THAT MULTIPLE SENSORS AND ECU NEEDS TO BE REPLACED COSTING IN THE RANGE OF $2000.00 PLUS DOLLARS. ALSO I HAVE READ MULTIPLE CONSUMER COMPLAINTS JUST LIKE THIS ONE. THESE LIGHTS ARE ON THE VEHICLE FOR A REASON AND TOYOTA PUT THE RECALL OUT FOR A REASON SO FIX THE PROBLEMS!!!! *TR
FRAME SHOWS SIGNS OF EXTREME RUST, ESPECIALLY AT ALL WELD POINTS. MANY INTEGRAL COMPONENTS OF THE FRAME HAVE MULTIPLE LAYERS OF RUST THROUGH. THE REAR AXLE TORSION BARS HAVE HEAVY RUST AND APPEAR TO SHOW DIMINISHED DIAMETER. THE REAR AXLE DRAIN BOLT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL FALL OFF IF AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO CHECK FLUID. FRAME HAS RUSTED THROUGH. *TR
TOOK 2003 SEQUOIA TO BAIERL DEALERSHIP ON AUGUST 26, 2011 IN CRANBERRY, PA FOR 130,000 MILE CHECK UP. MECHANIC NOTICED "HOLE' IN FRAME BEHIND FRONT RIGHT WHEEL. UPON FURTHER INSPECTION WITH ANOTHER MECHANIC THERE ARE SEVERAL AREAS WHERE FRAME IS RUSTED THROUGH BEHIND FRONT WHEELS. TOYOTA SAYS THIS ISSUE IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. UPON INVESTIGATION ON THIS SITE AND OTHERS, IT SEEMS THAT MODEL YEARS 2000-2003 TACOMA'S, TUNDRA'S AND SEQUOIA'S ALL HAVE THIS ISSUE. TOYOTA HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE ON TACOMA'S AND TUNDRA'S, BUT NOT SEQUOIA'S FOR SOME REASON. THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS INSPECTION NOW AND TOYOTA THEMSELVES HAVE SAID I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE IT TO A BODY SHOP WHERE IT COULD POSSIBLY BE REPAIRED, BUT NO GUARANTEES. I AM LOOKING FOR A RESOLUTION TO THIS ISSUE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO A WALL AT HIS RESIDENCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTO BODY REPAIR SHOP. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT PREVIOUSLY EXPERIENCED A FAILURE WITH THE REAR AXLE DETACHING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE REAR AXLE WAS REPLACED AND THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
MY 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WAS RUSTPROOFED ANNUALLY BUT EXHIBITS AN UNUSUAL AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE FRAME. THE SPARE TIME IS READY TO FALL OFF. *KB
I JUST PURCHASED A USED 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 2 DAYS AGO FROM THE DEALER. ALTHOUGH, THE VEHICLE COMES UNDER NO WARRANTY, I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED BY OTHER 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 OWNERS. THE PROBLEM ' TRAC OFF LIGHT CAME ON, VSC LIGHT CAME ON AND THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY NEED TO SEE THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS THE SKID ECU AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT $1200.00 FOR THE PART AND $232.30 FOR LABOR. THE SERVICE TECH TOLD ME THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE AS THIS IS THE BRAIN OF THE BRAKING SYSTEM AND THE ABS WILL LOCK UP AND THE BRAKES WILL FAIL. THE LIGHTS REMAINED ON UNTIL THE NEXT DAY. I WENT ON LINE TO RESEARCH THE CAUSE AND DEFECT AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM I HAVE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND HOPING TO RESOLVE THIS MALFUNCTION BEFORE PEOPLE ARE KILLED.
MY 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA IS EXPERIENCING HEAVY FRAME RUST, TO THE POINT OF BEING A SAFETY CONCERN FOR THE INTEGRITY OF THE FRAME AND UNDERCARRIAGE. I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT THAT IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THE SEQUOIA AND TUNDRA FRAMES ARE IDENTICAL AND BUILT BY THE SAME FACTORY. THE SAME MODEL YEAR TOYOTA TUNDRA'S HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR HEAVY FRAME RUST, BUT THE SEQUOIA'S HAVE NOT. I FEEL THAT THE SEQUOIA MODELS ARE SEEING THE SAME RUST PROBLEM FOUND ON THE TOYOTA TUNDRA'S AND SHOULD LIKEWISE BE RECALLED AS WELL. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 5 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER, WHERE THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND THE RESULT INDICATED A FAULTY VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM. THE DEALER ALSO STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT NOTICED A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 10V176000 (ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL) AND NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURER AFTER THE DATES INDICATED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000.
I JUST PURCHASED A USED 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA A MONTH AGO FROM THE DEALER. ALTHOUGH, THE VEHICLE COMES UNDER NO WARRANTY, I WOULD LIKE TO FILE A DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED BY OTHER 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA OWNERS. THE PROBLEM - VSC TRAC LIGHT ON, OFF, BRAKE LIGHT , ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY CHANGED THE AIR/FUE; SENSOR FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND THE VSC TRAC LIGHT WERE CLEARED. HOWEVER, DRIVING THE VEHICLE BACK HOME, VSC TRAC LIGHT ON/OFF AND BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON STEADY. I WENT ON LINE TO RESEARCHED THE CAUSE AND DEFECT AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE ARE QUITE A FEW OWNERS EXPERIENCING THE PROBLEM I HAVE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND HOPING TO RESOLVE THIS MALFUNCTION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VSC AND TRACTION CONTROL WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE AS HE LOST CONTROL OF IT. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKING SYSTEM WAS INOPERABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 105,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
IT WAS RAINING, I WAS GOING AROUND A TURN ,10 - 15 MPH THE BACK TIRE STARTED TO SPIN, THE VSC TRAC,VSC OFF,AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON, THIS IS AFTER THE TRK. WENT TO THE DEALER TO CHECK OUT A RECALL ON THE VSC. THEY SAID IT WASN'T UNDER A RECALL, WE PARKED THE SEQUOIA AND WONT DRIVE IT UNTIL IT'S REPAIRED, SAFETY REASONS, I MOVED IT , TRIED TO GO OVER A CURB ON AN ANGLE AND THE RIGHT REAR TIRE JUST WAS SPINNING ON THE ASPHALT ROAD. THIS CANT BE GOOD FOR THE SEQUOIA ,ITS 4 WHEEL DRIVE, AND ITS MAKING A NOISE, IN THE DRIVE TRAIN ,CLUNKING?? IT SLIDES IN THE RAIN (BAD ) AND WONT STOP ON WET ROADS VERY WELL , IT SLIDES TO A STOP. I DON'T HAVE ALOT OF TIME TO RESEARCH THE VSC PROBLEM ,BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE ALL THE SEQUOIA'S 03-05 HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, FOR THE COST OF THIS TRK. I HOPE TOYOTA WILL FIX THIS PROBLEM. *TR
VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL (VSC), TRACTION CONTROL (TRAC), AND ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) DASH LIGHTS CONTINUOUSLY ILLUMINATED INDICATING THAT ALL SYSTEMS ARE OFF OR MALFUNCTIONING. CAN CONFIRM THAT THE TRAC, VSC, AND ABS ARE INACTIVE ALL OR MOST OF THE TIME. THE ABS INTERVENES AT RANDOM UNDER NORMAL BRAKING CONDITIONS WITHOUT CAUSE AT LOW SPEED (LESS THAN 20MPH) AND MAKES BRAKING DIFFICULT AND INCONSISTENT IN CONDITIONS WHERE ABS IS NOT NORMALLY NEEDED. IN THAT SITUATION THE BRAKE PEDAL BECOMES HARD TO DEPRESS AND BRAKING FORCE IS INCONSISTENTLY APPLIED WITH LITTLE CONTROL GIVEN TO THE OPERATOR IN TURN EXTENDING THE BRAKING DISTANCE WITHOUT DUE CAUSE OR WARNING. AFTER MUCH RESEARCH ONLINE I HAVE FOUND NUMEROUS REPORTS STATING IDENTICAL AND/OR SIMILAR OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCES. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THE PROBLEM LIES IN THE VSC CONTROL MODULE, A KNOWN PROBLEMATIC COMPONENT ON THIS GENERATION OF SEQUOIA AND MORE SPECIFICALLY MODEL YEAR 2003 VEHICLES. A RECALL FOR THE VSC SYSTEM WAS ISSUED IN APRIL/MAY 2010 UPGRADING THE CONTROL LOGIC OF THE VSC SYSTEM IN CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2003 VEHICLES. LET IT BE KNOWN THAT THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION HAD THE RECALL WORK DONE IN JUNE OF 2011 WHICH DID NOT REMEDY THE ISSUE AS IT HAS BEEN EITHER INTERMITTENT OR CONSTANT SINCE THEN.
WHEN I CAME TO PICK UP MY VEHICLE FROM MY PERSONAL MECHANIC (JUNE 2011) AFTER HE HAD REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS, HE WARNED ME ABOUT SERIOUS UNDERCARRIAGE RUST. DESPITE MY VEHICLE ONLY HAVING 64000 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME HE INDIRECTLY SUGGESTED SELLING THE VEHICLE IN THE NEXT YEAR OR TWO AS THIS PREMATURE RUSTING WILL BE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT I WON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH. I WONDER WHY THE TUNDRA HAD A RECALL ON THE FRAME AND NOT THE SEQUOIA? IS THIS VEHICLE SAFE?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS AND THE VSC WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V176000 (ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL , TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM ) BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 80,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. *TR
THERE WERE NO PARTICULAR EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE FAILURE OF OUR TOYOTA SEQUOIA 'S 'YAW SENSOR'. THE CAR WAS BEING DRIVEN IN NORMAL CONDITIONS WHEN THE VCS AND ABS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE SEEMED TO SHAKE/SHIFT WHEN THIS HAPPENED. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS NO INJURY OR INCIDENT OTHER THAN NEEDING TO TAKE THE VEHICLE INTO THE SHOT TO HAVE THE ISSUE DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRS COMPLETED. REPAIR REQUIRED THE INSTALLATION OF A NEW YAW SENSOR TO BE INSTALLED BY THE DEALERSHIP. THE OLD PARTS HAVE BEEN REQUESTED FROM THE DEALER FOR US TO RETAIN. *TR
I OWN A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH A SEVERLY RUSTED FRAME. IT HAS APROX. 16" LONG RUST HOLE IN IT APROX 1-2" WIDE,JUST UNDER DRIVERS FLOOR AT BOTTOM OF FRAME,RIGHT WHERE THE REAR TRANSMISSION CROSSMEMBER ATTACHES TO FRAME. I HAVE OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE BRAND NEW (PURCHASED IN SEPT. OF 2002) AND VEHICLE HAS JUST OVER 63,000 MILES. VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT AT LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHERE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED AND SERVICED AND THE TOYOTA "FTS" INSPECTED IT AND TOOK SEVERAL PICTURES AND DOCUMENTED IT ON 5/5/2011 AND REPORTED FINDINGS TO FACTORY AND DEEMED MY VEHICLE "UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO PERFORATION IN FRAME". I WAS INSTRUCTED BY TOYOTA FTS TO CONTACT TOYOTA CORPORATE HEADQUATERS AND SEE WHAT CAN/WILL BE DONE BY TOYOTA. AFTER 3 CALLS OVER A 2 WEEK PERIOD TOYOTA TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD DO NOTHING TO CORRECT THIS CONCERN ALTHOUGH THE TUNDRA HAS THE SAME ISSUE WITH RUSTING FRAMES AND TOYOTA IS REPLACING THEM UNDER AN EXTENSION OF THE WARRANTY AND BOTH VEHICLES USE THE SAME CHASSIS TYPE AND ARE MADE IN SAME PLANT. UPON RESEARCH OF THIS ISSUE (VIA THE INTERNET) I FIND THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS ISSUE AND TOYOTA SEEMS TO BE TREATING ALL OF IT'S SEQUOIA OWNERS IN THE SAME FASHION.PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS ISSUE BEFORE SOMEONE WHO DOES NOT KNOW THEIR FRAME HAS RUSTED AND POSSIBLY BREAKS CAUSING LOSS OF CONTROL POSSIBLY INJURING OR KILLING IT'S DRIVER AND OR PASSENGERS. TOYOTA KNOWS OF THE PROBLEM AND THEIR FAILURE TO PROPERLY PROTECT THEIR FRAME FROM RUSTING THROUGH DUE TO ENVIROMENTAL CONDITIONS THAT ARE SEEN IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THE UNITED STATES (AS STATED BY ONE OF THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP'S THAT I HAD SPOKEN TO) WHEN REFERING TO THE TUNDRA AND I FEEL THAT TOYOTA IS ONCE AGAIN TRYING TO EXCLUDE ITSELF FROM ANY PROBLEMS TO THE SEQUOIA. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AS IT WAS ON THE TUNDRA AND INCLUDE THE SEQUOIA.

VSC/TRAC LIGHTS ARE ON, ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. TOYOTA DEALER TELLS ME THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA BUT THERE'S NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT HE WOULD NEED TO INSTALL STUDS ON THE ROTORS AND REPLACE THE LUG NUTS. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WAS APPROXIMATELY 86,000. UPDATED 05/25/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE WRONG LUG UTS WERE INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE. UPATED 06/03/11
I PURCHASED A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA FROM THOUSAND OAKS TOYOTA DEALER ON JAN 22, 2011. I NOTICED ON THE THIRD WEEK OF DRIVING IT, THE BRAKE LIGHT, AND VSC LIGHT WOULD GO ON INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE AOG COMPUTER, AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS UPDATE WOULD MOST LIKELY FILX THE PROBLEM. AFTER THE AOG WAS UPDATED12 MAR 2011, NOW BOTH THE BRAKE LIGHT AND THE VSC TRACK OFF LIGHTS COME ON, AND THE BRAKES SHUDDER TO A STOP. UNFORTUNATELY THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN EACH AND EVERYTIME I'M DRIVING THE CAR, BUT RATHER SPORADICALLY. I'VE TAKEN THE SUV BACK TO THE DEALER, AND THEY SEEM TO BE GUESSING AS TO THE PROBLEM, AND SOLUTION. THEY HAVE SUGGESTED THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE BOOSTER, HOWEVER BLOGS THAT I HAVE READ ON THIS ISSUE INDICATE CHANGING THESE PARTICULAR PARTS WILL NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. MY PERSONAL MECHANIC HAS SUGGESTED THAT THE MASTER CYLINDER AND BRAKE BOOSTER ARE NOT THE ISSUE, BUT RATHER RELATED TO THE WHOLE BREAKING COMPUTER SYSTEM. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE REAR LIFT GATE HANDLE STOPPED WORKING.. A PLASTIC PART BROKE. I REPAIRED THE LIFT GATE BY DRILLING IT AND INSERTING A NUT AND SCREW TO HOLD IT IN PLACE THUS MAKING IT STRONGER. THAT WORKED FOR ABOUT A YEAR. IT JUST BROKE AGAIN. *LN
THIS 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HAS PERFORMED QUITE WELL. THE OTHER DAY, THE VSC AND VSC TRAC LIGHTS CAME ON ALONG WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. I DID NOT DETECT ANY CHANGE IN THE WAY THE CAR PERFORMED OR HANDLED WHEN THIS OCCURRED. A TRIP TO THE DEALER, (ALONG WITH THE MANDATORY $105 DIAGNOSTIC CHARGE), RESULTED IN THE CLAIM THAT THE OXYGEN SENSOR AND YAW RATE SENSOR NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR ABOUT $1200. IN MY OPINION, IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY FOR TWO UNRELATED PROBLEMS SUCH AS THE OXYGEN SENSOR AND YAW RATE SENSOR TO FAIL AT THE EXACT SAME TIME. TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENTS HAVE A LONG, SLIMY RECORD OF INCORRECTLY DIAGNOSING PROBLEMS AND UNNECESSARY REPLACING EXPENSIVE PARTS IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE SIZE OF THE REPAIR BILL. I BELIEVE THAT THIS MAY BE ONE OF THOSE OCCASIONS. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH SHOWS THAT THERE ARE MANY THOUSANDS OF TOYOTA OWNERS WHO HAVE REPORTED THIS PROBLEM. MOST HAVE ALSO GIVEN THE TOYOTA SERVICE CENTERS FAILING MARKS FOR HOW THE PROBLEM WAS EVALUATED AND REPAIRED. IT MAY BE POSSIBLE THAT THE OXYGEN SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE AS A VEHICLE AGES. THE YAW RATE SENSOR IS A CRITICAL VEHICLE HANDLING COMPONENT THAT SHOULD BE ENGINEERED TO LAST FOR THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. IF THIS COMPONENT HAS FAILED, (WHICH I DOUBT), IT SHOULD BE REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER AT NO COST TO THE VEHICLE OWNER. THE ALLEGED YAW RATE SENSOR FAILURE IS SUSPICIOUS FOR ANOTHER REASON. SEVERAL MONTHS AGO I RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE RELATING TO THIS EXACT PROBLEM. THE CAR HAD NOT SHOWN ANY PROBLEMS UP TO THE TIME OF THE RECALL REPAIR. A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER THE SO-CALLED REPAIR, THIS PROBLEM POPS UP. HMMM. I DON'T THINK TOYOTA IS TELLING THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND OBVIOUSLY THE RECALL DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
MY WIFE AND I OWN A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA, WHICH WE PURCHASED NEW IN 2003. WE USE IT SPARINGLY, SO IT ONLY HAD 18,743 ORIGINAL MILES ON IT AS OF DECEMBER 23, 2010 (A DATE REFERRED TO AGAIN BELOW). THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN REGULARLY MAINTAINED BY COPELAND TOYOTA, BROCKTON, MA, AND WAS TROUBLE-FREE UNTIL RECENTLY. ON NOVEMBER 23, 2010, I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE WITH MY WIFE IN THE VEHICLE. I HAD COME TO ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP IN THE PARKING SPACE WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, WHEN THE ENGINE REVVED AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD INTO THE NEXT PARKING SPACE IN FRONT OF ME (FORTUNATELY UNOCCUPIED). ON DECEMBER 17, 2010, AGAIN WITH MY WIFE IN THE VEHICLE, I HAD BACKED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY ONTO THE STREET AND HAD THE VEHICLE AT ALMOST A COMPLETE STOP WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WHEN THE ENGINE REVVED AND THE VEHICLE LURCHED BACKWARDS UP A HILL BEHIND ME. ON BOTH OCCASIONS I WAS ABLE TO APPLY PRESSURE ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO FINALLY STOP THE VEHICLE. I CHECKED THE FLOOR MAT, AS DID THE TOYOTA DEALER, AND FOUND NO PROBLEM WITH IT. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE TOYOTA DEALER ON DECEMBER 20, 2010. THE SERVICE ADVISOR PROFESSED TO NOT KNOWING WHAT CAUSED THE LURCHING, SAID THERE WAS NO RELATED RECALL ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE, AND TOLD ME THAT THEIR DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER SHOWED CODES IN THE SYSTEM INDICATING A FAULTY VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL ENGINE CONTROL UNIT (VSC ECU). IT TOOK THE DEALER FOUR DAYS TO GET TOYOTA TO "RELEASE" A REPLACEMENT ECU, WHICH WAS INSTALLED ON DECEMBER 23, 2010 AT A COST (MATERIALS AND LABOR) OF $650.00. THIS WAS CLEARLY A DANGEROUS SITUATION; WE WERE FORTUNATE THAT IT OCCURRED WHERE IT DID. *TR
SKID CONTROL ACTIVATED AT LOW SPEED WITH GRINDING NOISE, MILEAGE 66,000; WARNING LIGHTS FOR TRACTION CONTROL, ABS,PARKING BRAKE, STABILITY CONTROL ALL ACTIVATED. TOOK INTO DEALER WHERE SUPPOSEDLY REPAIRED, DROVE 5 MILES AND HAPPENED AGAIN. BACK AT THE DEALER NOW, WAITING TO SEE WHO PAYS. THIS HAPPENED IN 2004 AT VERY LOW MILEAGE AND THE FAULTY SKID CONTROL ECU UNIT WAS REPLACED, NOT REPROGRAMMED, AT MY INSISTENCE, HAVING BEEN AWARE OF THE FACTORY SERVICE BULLETIN.
AFTER YEARS OF INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS WITH THE ABS/VSC/TRAC LIGHTS COMING ON, I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR THE RECALL REQUIRING A SOFTWARE UPDATE. THE UPDATE WAS PREFORMED, AND THEN THE DEALER SAYS THE YAW SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED OR THE LIGHTS WILL NOT GO OFF. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE, IT APPEARS THAT THOUSANDS OF SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE THIS PROBLEM. UNLESS I SUBMIT TO THE DEALER'S EXTORTION OF $700, I HAVE A FAULTY ABS SYSTEM BECAUSE OF THE YAW SENSOR THAT HAS A HIGH FAILURE RATE. THIS SHOULD BE RECALLED.
I OWN A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AND THE OIL PRESSURE SENDING UNIT IS FAILING TO REPORT THE PROPER OIL INFORMATION. IT FLUCTUATES AT RANDOM TIMES DROPPING TO THE LOW MARK AND WILL REMAIN THERE FOR MINUTES AT A TIME. IF THIS SENDING UNIT DOES NOT INFORM ME OF THE TRUE REPRESENTATION OF OIL PRESSURE, IT COULD POTENTIALLY DAMAGE MY VEHICLE ENGINE AND HOPE THAT TOYOTA RECALLS THIS PART BECAUSE I HAVE SEEN HUNDREDS OF BLOGS FROM OTHER TOYOTA OWNERS REPORTING THIS SAME ISSUE. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT ADVISED THAT THEY WOULD PROVIDE NO ASSISTANCE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS FOR THE YEAR, MAKE AND MODEL THAT PERTAINED TO THE FAILURE THE CONTACT EXPERIENCED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 117,000.
FIRST VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS COMPUTER FAILURE: MARCH 20 2009 DEALERSHIP FOUND THE SKID CONTROL COMPUTER MALFUNCTIONED AND WAS REPLACED UNDER AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. TOTAL COST OF REPAIRS $1521. DUE TO OUR EXTENDED WARRANTY, WE PAID $50. SECOND VSC TRAC AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS COMPUTER FAILURE NOVEMBER 15 2010 RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE IN MAIL. MADE APPOINTMENT WITH TOYOTA SERVICE. SINCE THE COMPUTER WAS REPLACED PREVIOUSLY DURING FIRST TRACTION CONTROL FAILURE, THEY WOULD NOT "UPDATE" THE SOFTWARE IN THE COMPUTER, NOR DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPT @ DEALERSHIP DID NOT EVEN GIVE ME A CHANCE TO DO THE DIAGNOSTIC WORK AND TOLD ME THAT THE DIAGNOSTIC TIME WOULD HAVE TO BE "RE SCHEDULED" AT A LATER DATE. DUE TO MY TAKING THE DAY OFF FROM WORK TO DO THIS RECALL REPAIR, I LEFT THE DEALERSHIP WITH NO REPAIR WORK NOR IDEA AS TO WHY THE COMPUTER FAILED A SECOND TIME. 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA LIMITED REAR HATCH HANDLE BREAKS OFF. CAN'T OPEN REAR LIFTGATE. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM SINCE 1999 WITH TOYOTA. THERE ARE SEVERAL TOYOTA FORUMS WITH OVER 500 COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEM. APPARENTLY, THE HANDLE PART IS INFERIOR IT IS MADE OUT OF PLASTIC. THE PART HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED SINCE 1999 AND IS STILL USED. MOST SEQUOIA OWNERS HAVE HAD TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM FIXED MORE THAN ONE TIME. THE PROBLEM STARTS FROM WATER POOLING IN THE HATCH AREA UNDER THE LIFTGATE. AS A RESULT, THE LOCK /HATCH HANDLE AREA CORRODES/RUSTS PUTS TENSION ON THE HANDLE AND THEN EVENTUALLY BREAKS. THE PART FAILS WITHOUT WARNING EXCEPT THAT THE LATCH MAY BE HARD TO OPEN FOR QUITE AWHILE BEFORE COMPLETELY BREAKING. I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND HAVE HAD THIS LATCH PROBLEM SINCE THE FIRST YEAR OF OWNERSHIP . ASK ANYONE WHO OWNS A SEQUOIA, AND THE WILL HAVE OR HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. AFTER THE WORK WAS COMPLETED, THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH BOTH MY VSC LIGHTS AND THE ABS LIGHT PERMANENTLY ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER PUT IT BACK ON THE TESTING STATION AND DETERMINED THAT NOW MY DECELERATION SENSOR (YAW RATE SENSOR) IS FAULTY AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS COMPONENT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE ENTIRE VSC SYSTEM, AND IS A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR. I AM NOW FACING A HUGE BILL WHICH AMOUNTED FROM BRINGING IN THE CAR TO ADDRESS A SAFETY RECALL. DEALER IS NOT WILLING TO ASSUME ANY RESPONSIBILITY. TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE SAYS THERE IS NOTHING THEY WILL DO ABOUT THE SITUATION, AND I NEED TO RESOLVE IT WITH THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE SKID CONTROL SYSTEM HELPS PROVIDE INTEGRATED CONTROL OF THE SYSTEMS SUCH AS ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM, TRACTION CONTROL, ENGINE CONTROL, ETC. THIS SYSTEM AUTOMATICALLY CONTROLS THE BRAKES AND ENGINE TO HELP PREVENT THE VEHICLE FROM SKIDDING WHEN CORNERING ON A SLIPPERY ROAD OR SURFACE OR OPERATING STEERING WHEEL ABRUPTLY. MINE IS FAULTY, AND NEITHER TOYOTA NOR THE DEALERSHIP CARE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR RECALL 10V176000 (TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM) ON OCTOBER 11, 2010. HOWEVER, THE TRACTION AND STABILITY CONTROL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED; THE CONTACT TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTARTED IT TO RESET THE LIGHTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER SEVERAL TIMES BUT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND FILED A COMPLAINT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,826 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 116,000.
