MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA EXPERIENCED BRAKE FAILURE AT 10 MILES PER HOUR. I WAS LOOKING TO MAKE A TURN AT THE LIGHT AND MY VEHICLE GAVE ME A HUGE JERK AND THE BRAKES BEGIN TO GIVE OUT. AFTER THE BRAKE FAILURE THE VS AND BRAKES LIGHT CAME ON. I HAVE SEEN A LOT OF PEOPLE POSTING THIS PROBLEM WITH THERE VEHICLE. I AM LOOKING FOR HELP SINCE MY CHILDREN DRIVE MY VEHICLE SOMETIMES. HELP!!! I BROUGHT THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF IT'S REPUTATION. HOWEVER, AFTER SEEING ALL THE ISSUES WITH THIS VEHICLE AND TOYOTA REFUSAL TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM, MY FAMILY WILL BE LOOKING ELSE WHERE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH OVER A MANHOLE, THERE WAS A LOUD POPPING SOUND AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WHEEL FOLDED UNDER THE VEHICLE. AS A RESULT, THE CONTACT CRASHED INTO A DITCH ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE FRONT PASSENGER SUSTAINED INJURIES TO THE RIGHT KNEE AND REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V013000 (SUSPENSION). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 175,000.
I BOUGHT MY CAR USED TWO WEEKS AGO FROM AN INDIVIDUAL. I NOTICED ON MY WAY HOME THAT THE SEATBELT LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND THEN GO BACK OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING, EVEN THOUGH I WAS WEARING MY SEATBELT. A FEW DAYS LATER, AS I WAS PULLING INTO MY DAUGHTER'S DRIVEWAY, THE BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. I TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND THE NEXT TIME I STARTED UP, THE LIGHT DIDN'T COME ON. IT CAME ON AGAIN SEVERAL DAYS LATER WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING THE CAR. THE NEXT LIGHT TO COME ON WAS MY FUEL LIGHT. THE GAUGE SAID MY CAR WAS ON EMPTY, AND I KNEW I HAD AT LEAST HALF A TANK OF GAS. I BEGAN TO GROW CONCERNED WITH THE VEHICLE, SO I TOOK IT TO MY TOYOTA DEALER YESTERDAY. THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED A NEW SEATBELT CLIP AND A FUEL SENSOR, WHICH ARE "MINOR", BUT THAT I ALSO NEEDED A NEW MASTER CYLINDER, BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS, AND SEVERAL OTHER BRAKE-RELATED ISSUES, PLUS THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE SKID CONTROL - ALL TO THE TUNE OF $5,900. I DECIDED TO GET A SECOND OPINION, BUT IN THE MEANTIME, IN RESEARCHING THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE, I SAW MANY PEOPLE HAVE POSTED COMMENTS REGARDING THE SKID CONTROL/BRAKE SYSTEM ON 2002-2004 SEQUOIAS. APPARENTLY A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THE MODEL YEAR 2003, BUT NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO HELP OWNERS OF 2004 MODELS, AND I AM WONDERING WHY.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. HELLO I PURCHASED A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THROUGH A PRIVATE SALE ON 4/1/15. WE BROUGHT THE CAR HOME AND TOOK IT TO OUR LOCAL MECHANIC TO HAVE A NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM PUT IN. AT THAT TIME WE WHERE TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE HAS EXTENSIVE FRAME RUST AND HOLES AND WE SHOULD TAKE IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER. AFTER BRINGING THE CAR TO THE DEALER, WE WHERE TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE HAS FRAME RUST AND HOLES FROM FRONT TO REAR AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS STATE INSPECTION. I CALL CORPORATE TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT THIS SINCE THE CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE/FIX THE FRAMES EXPIRED 7/31/2014. SO BASICALLY WE HAVE A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA THAT IS A NO GOOD AND TOYOTA IS NOT GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR FAULTY FRAME. *TR
BRAKES DO NOT WORK CORRECTLY. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE SEQUOIA HOWEVER, WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA LAST MONTH THEY HAD TOLD ME THAT I WAS UNABLE TO HAVE THE RECALL TAKEN CARE OF BECAUSE MY TIME HAD EXPIRED! HOW CAN THAT BE POSSIBLE IF THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE SEQUOIA? SURE ENOUGH I WAS DRIVING AND THERE WAS A PROBLEM STOPPING AS HAD BEEN NOTED IN THE RECALL. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND UNFAIR! MADE A LEFT HAND TURN AND THE CONTROL ARM BROKE OFF FROM RUSTED FRAME WHILE TRAVELING AT ABOUT TEN MPH. REPAIR CENTER SAYS THE VEHICLE IS A TOTAL LOSS, BECAUSE THE FRAME IS NOT SAFE, NOTHING TO RE-ATTACH CONTROL ARM TO! *TR
TOYOTA SEQUOIA WITH 139K MILES. THIS SUV HAD A FRAME RECALL IN 2014, TOYOTA DEALER APPLIED THE PAINT/EPOXY TO THE RUSTED FRAME INSTEAD OF REPLACING THE RUSTED FRAME. THE PAINT PEELED OFF WITHIN 6 MONTHS OF THE APPLICATION. NOW THE FRAME IS RUSTED VERY BADLY. WHEN DRIVING IT MAKES GRINDING NOISES. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT BECAUSE OF EXTENSIVE FRAME RUST, THE FRAME HAS GOTTEN WEAKER AND IS SLIGHTLY BENT. THIS MAKES THE MOVING PARTS TOUCH THE OTHER PARTS OF THE BODY/FRAME RESULTING IN THE NOISES. HE SUGGESTED REPLACING THE RUSTED FRAME.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE AND STATED THAT THE STATE THAT THE VEHICLE WAS REGISTERED IN WAS NOT CONSIDERED IN A HIGH HUMIDITY ZONE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
AFTER GETTING OFF THE HIGHWAY AND PARKING, I FOUND IT HARD TO MOVE STEERING WHEEL AND THE CAR BEGAN MAKING LOUD NOISE. WHEN OUR MECHANIC LOOKED AT IT, HE SAID THE ENTIRE FRAME HAD RUSTED, INCLUDING THE PART THAT HOLDS THE POWER STEERING FLUID, CAUSING THE POWER STEERING FLUID TO FALL OUT, AND CREATING THE STEERING PROBLEMS. HE DETERMINED THE VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND RECOMMENDED I CALLED TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REPLACE THE FRAME AS PART OF TOYOTA'S FRAME REPLACEMENT PROGRAM. I TRIED CALLING 2 TOYOTA DEALERSHIPS (INCLUDING THE ONE FROM WHICH I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE) AND BOTH SAID THEY'RE NOT RUNNING THAT PROGRAM ANYMORE AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I THEN CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE, FILED MY CASE AND REQUESTING THAT FRAME BE REPLACED DUE TO THE EXTREME RUST AND THE PROBLEMS IT WAS CAUSING WITH UNDER 75,000 MI ON IT. THEY SIMPLY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. I AM NOW WITHOUT THE VEHICLE, WHICH I USE FOR MY BUSINESS, AND PURCHASED JUST A YEAR AND A HALF AGO. WHEN WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE, WE WERE NOT TOLD THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL OR POSSIBLE PROBLEM WITH RUST. *TR
WHILE HAVING 4 NEW TIRES PUT ON MY VEHICLE, THE MECHANIC TOLD ME ABOUT SEVERE CORROSION ON THE FRAME OF MY CAR. HE SAID IT WAS SO BAD IT IS STARTING TO BUCKLE. HE MENTIONED THAT IT WAS A RECALL AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA. TOYOTA TELLS ME I HAVE NO RECOURSE AS RECALL ENDED 6 MONTHS AGO. I NEVER RECEIVED INFO ON THE RECALL AND DO BELIEVE THAT A DEFECTIVELY MADE FRAME SHOULD BE RECTIFIED BY THE COMPANY, NOT THE CONSUMER. I AM THE MOTHER OF 4 CHILDREN AND AM CONSTANTLY DRIVING CARPOOLS AROUND TOWN. *TR
I HAVE A '04 SEQUOIA 4WD LTD, MY VSC TRAC, VSC OFF AND ABS LIGHTS COME ON AND STAY ON, THEY NEVER GO OFF. THE VISIT TO A DEALER ENDED WITH THEM STATING THAT THEY COULD NOT READ ANY CODES, SO THE VSC COMPUTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, ABOUT $1,500.00 TOTAL. THE CAR IS NOT EXPERIENCING ANY PROBLEMS, BUT, THE LIGHTS STAY ON.....SEQUOIA HAS 83K MILES. ANYONE OFFER ANY ADVICE OR HELP TO SOLVE THE PROBLEMS? *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE VEERED UNCONTROLLABLY FROM LEFT TO RIGHT. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE OFF THE ROADWAY SAFELY. THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT THE REAR TRAILING ARM FRACTURED DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION. THE SUBFRAME WAS SPRAYED PER AN UNKNOWN SERVICE CAMPAIGN, BUT IT DID NOT PREVENT THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE SUBFRAME WAS PLATE WELDED. TOYOTA OF SMITHFIELD (LOCATED AT 550 GEORGE WASHINGTON HWY, SMITHFIELD, RI 02917, (401) 723-0972) WAS CONTACTED AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE SERVICE CAMPAIGN HAD EXPIRED AND NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WOULD BE OFFERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 210,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.

THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR SLIDING DOOR STUCK IN THE OPEN POSITION DUE TO THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THERE WAS NO WAY TO CLOSE THE DOOR ONCE OPENED. THE WIFE HAD TO DRIVE TO DEALERSHIP WITH DOOR STUCK WIDE OPEN IN THE DARK. THIS WAS NOT SAFE FOR VARIOUS REASONS... I READ WHERE OTHER VEHICLES HAD THE SAME PROBLEMS BUT DO NOT SEE A RECALL YET BY TOYOTA. WE WILL HAVE THE DEALER BREAK THE CABLE AND RENDER THE DOORS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM USELESS FOR THAT DOOR. THIS REALLY CAUSES ISSUES FOR A PERSON WITH A DISABILITY AND A SPECIAL NEEDS CHILD. HOPEFULLY TOYOTA WILL STEP UP AND RECALL THESE VEHICLES AND CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. *TR
SEQUOIA VSC TRAC SENSOR LIGHTS TURNING ON AND OFF. THIS PROBLEM AFFECTS TOYOTA SEQUOIA FROM 2003 - 2005. THERE IS A RECALL FOR 2003 MODEL BUT NOT 2004. OTHER DRIVERS REPORT A LOSS OF POWER (TOTAL LOSS OF POWER - THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF) WHILE THE CAR IN DRIVING. HERE IS THE RECALL FOR THE 2003 MODEL: RECALL ID # 68549 - ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL PLUS RECALL DATE: APR 30, 2010 MODEL AFFECTED: 2003 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SUMMARY: TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2003 SEQUOIA PASSENGER VEHICLES MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 1, 2002 THROUGH APRIL 17, 2003. THE CENTER POSITION OF THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR (SAS) MAY NOT BE STORED CORRECTLY DUE TO IMPROPER LOGIC OF THE SKID CONTROL ECU PROGRAMMING. THE VEHICLE STABILITY CONTROL (VSC) SYSTEM COULD ACTIVATE AT LOW SPEED FOR A FEW SECONDS DURING ACCELERATION FROM A STOPPED POSITION. CONSEQUENCES: SHOULD THIS OCCUR, THE VEHICLE MAY NOT ACCELERATE AS QUICKLY AS THE DRIVER EXPECTS, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. REMEDY: TOYOTA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL RE-FLASH THE ECU. IF THE RE-FLASH CANNOT BE COMPLETED ON A PARTICULAR VEHICLE, THE ECU WILL BE REPLACED WITH A NEW ONE. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 11, 2010. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V655000 (AIR BAGS) WAS RECEIVED HOWEVER, EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME. *FILED WITH ATTORNEY GENERAL OF NEW YORK* RECALL WAS ISSUED ON THE 2004 SEQUOIA DUE TO CORROSION. ON JULY 25, 2013 WE BROUGHT OUR CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO APPLY A PROTECTIVE COAT AND WAITED A WEEK FOR THE CAR TO BE RETURNED TO US. WE HAD TO RETURN THE VEHICLE, SEPTEMBER, 2014, TO THE DEALER WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, THE SPRAY WAS FLAKING OFF EXPOSING THE RUST UNDERNEATH. THE VEHICLE WAS SPRAYED FOR THE SECOND TIME IN ONE DAY AND THAT TIME WE WERE TOLD THE VEHICLE'S REAR AXLE TRAILING ARM MOUNT WAS ALMOST SEPARATED FROM THE REAR AXLE HOUSING DUE TO THE CORROSION AND IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE AXLE. AT THAT TIME WE ASKED IF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN TO THE RECALL OF THE CORROSION, FLAT OUT WE WERE TOLD NO. WE THEN PROCEED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO OUR PERSONAL MECHANIC FOR SECOND OPINION, OCTOBER 27, 2014, AND HE CONFIRMED THE AXLE IS DAMAGE AND THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE IS IN SUCH POOR CONDITION THAT IT MUST BE FIRST ADDRESSED BEFORE REPLACING THE AXLE; HE ALSO MENTIONED TO US THIS IS THE SECOND SEQUOIA THAT HE HAD SEEN WITH THE SAME ISSUE, ALONG HE TOLD US THE SECOND SPRAYING WAS DONE INCORRECTLY, IT WAS NOT CLEANED OUT THEY JUST SPRAYED OVER THE FLAKING PROTECTIVE COAT AND THE RUST. OUR MECHANIC SAID THE VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE USED BECAUSE IT IS NOT SAFE AND HE IS WILLING TO SIGN AN AFFIDAVIT IF NECESSARY.

THE CONTACT BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THAT RECALL WAS NOT AFFECTED BY THE AIR BAG RECALL; HOWEVER, IT WAS INCLUDED IN AN IN-HOUSE RECALL (C0D) RESISTANT COMPOUND TO THE VEHICLE'S FRAME. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DETERMINED THAT THE ENTIRE FRAME WAS CORRODED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE RECALL NUMBERS WERE UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 175,000.
AT APPARENTLY RANDOM TIMES THE ((!)) LIGHT INDICATING A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES WILL TURN ON. SOMETIMES WITHOUT WARNING THE BRAKES WILL LOCK UP AT LOW SPEEDS FOR A SPLIT SECOND LOCKING UP THE WHEELS. A LITTLE RESEARCH SHOWED THAT THE 2003 OF THE SAME MAKE AND MODEL HAD A RECALL (10V176000) THAT DESCRIBES MY PROBLEM IN DETAIL. I THINK THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO 2004 MODEL. I POST ON A FORUM GOT A LOT OF ACTION WITH PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SINCE I REGULARLY TOW 5000LBS I WOULD HATE FOR THIS TO OCCUR THEN. THE REPLACEMENT PART IS AVAILABLE ONLY FROM TOYOTA AND AT A SERIOUS PRICE TAG. *TR

THE CONTACT REFERENCED NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V013000 (SUSPENSION), BUT DID NOT CONFIRM IF THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. MY 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA HATCH (LOCK SUS ASSY AND HANDLE ASSY) HAVE FAILED AND BEEN REPLACED ON TWO OCCASIONS. ON 10 JULY 2014 AND 23 NOVEMBER 2018 EACH WERE COSTLY REPAIRS FOR A SIMPLE HANDLE/LOCK THAT WERE POORLY DESIGNED. A DOOR HANDLE AND LOCK SHOULD NOT COST OVER ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS DURING THE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. AS THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND A LOYAL TOYOTA CUSTOMER I AM DISAPPOINTED WITH QUALITY OF SMALL PART REPLACEMENT JOBS I HAVE HAD TO COMPLETE TO MAINTAIN MY VEHICLE. RECEIVED NOTIFICATION FROM TOYOTA THAT MY SEQUOIA WAS BEING RECALLED FOR FRAME CORROSION. OBVIOUSLY THIS COULD CAUSE SAFETY CONCERNS IN THE FUTURE. THEY STATED THAT THE LAST FOR REMEDY WAS JULY 31,2014. I BROUGHT THE SEQUOIA TO MY LOCAL DEALER (MIRACLE TOYOTA, HAINES CITY FLORIDA). THE DEALER EXAMINED THE VEHICLE AND SAID IT REQUIRED REMEDY, BUT THEY COULD NOT PERFORM THESE SERVICES BECAUSE THEY DID HAVE THE PROPER TOOLS AND SUPPLIES. I WAS CALLED THE NEXT DAY BY [XXX] AT TOYOTA CORPORATE OFFICE AND WAS TOLD THAT MY LOCAL DEALER COULD NOT PERFORM THE SERVICE AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE A 1,000 MILES TO A DEALER THAT COULD PERFORM THE SERVICE. I AM 65 YEARS OLD AND ONLY DRIVE MY VEHICLE LOCALLY- HAVE NOT DRIVEN ON EXPRESSWAYS FOR MANY YEARS, THUS IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME TO REMEDY THIS SAFETY ISSUE. YES, WE JUST PURCHASED THIS USED 04 SEQUOIA FROM A PRIVATE PARTY SELLER AND EVERYTHING WAS FINE THE FIRST MONTH WE DROVE IT THEN THE VSC LIGHT AND THE TRAC OFF LIGHT CAME ON. THAT WAS WRONG ON MAY 18TH THE SWAY BAR RIPPED FROM THE FRAME CAUSING TOYOTA TO HAVE TO COME GET IT ON A ROLL BACK AND I HAVE BEEN STUCK IN A SMALL CAR WITH THREE KIDS 13, 8, & 3 SINCE THAT DATE. IN JANUARY 2013, WE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FROM TOYOTA ON OUR 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA AS TOYOTA WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE VEHICLES FRAMES RUSTING PREMATURELY. TOYOTA-TRAINED TECHNICIANS AT DEALER ASSESSED OUR FRAME AND DETERMINED IT WAS NOT RUSTING AND, ACCORDINGLY, WE DID NOT NEED A NEW FRAME. INSTEAD, THE TECHNICIANS SANDED THE FRAME AND APPLIED A COATING TO THE FRAME THAT WAS DESIGNED TO INCREASE THE LONGEVITY OF THE FRAME BY PREVENTING RUST. WE HAD NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER. WE DID NOT CHOOSE TO ACCEPT THE COATING IN LIEU OF A NEW FRAME, THE COATING WAS THE ONLY OPTION WE WERE OFFERED. RECENTLY, WE NOTICED RUST ON THE CAR AND RETURNED TO DEALER. DEALER LOOKED AT THE CAR AND DETERMINED THAT THE FRAME HAD COMPLETELY RUSTED THROUGH AND THE CAR WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. UP UNTIL THAT DATE MY FAMILY WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON A REGULAR BASIS HAVING NO IDEA IT WAS UNSAFE. THIS IS A MERE 15 MONTHS AFTER TOYOTA TECHNICIANS ASSESSED THE FRAME AND CONCLUDED THE FRAME WAS SAFE. I CALLED TOYOTA AND HAVE BEEN STONEWALLED. THEIR POSITION IS THAT THE RECALL WAS SATISFIED WHEN THEY APPLIED THE COATING AND MATTER IS CLOSED. A MISTAKE HAD TO HAVE BEEN MADE BECAUSE A FRAME THAT IS SAFE, RUST FREE, AND COATED WITH SOMETHING TO INCREASE LONGEVITY AND PREVENT RUST HAS TO LAST LONGER THAN 15 MONTHS. DEALER EITHER ERRED IN ITS INITIAL ASSESSMENT IN 2013 (MEANING FRAME WAS IN FACT RUSTED AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED) OR ERRED IN APPLYING THE ANTI-RUSTING COATING. BOTTOM LINE IS THAT TOYOTA SHOULD HAVE REPLACED THE FRAMES ON ALL OF THEIR VEHICLES. THIS PROCESS OF COATING THE FRAME OBVIOUSLY DOES NOT WORK AND THERE ARE LIKELY MANY U.S. CITIZENS DRIVING SEQUOIAS THAT ARE COATED BUT UNSAFE LIKE MINE. THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST 10 TIMES OVER THE YEARS. AT FIRST WE THOUGHT IT WAS THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND WE HAD THE TIGHTENED, SINCE IT SEEMED THAT THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING LOOSE AND IT WAS ENGAGING AS WE DROVE. THAT WASN'T IT, OBVIOUSLY AND IT CONTINUES TO OCCUR. WITH SUCH A HEAVY, LARGE CAR, WE HAVE NEARLY REAR-ENDED OTHERS, BUT GOT LUCKY. EACH TIME THE CAR PULLS TO ONE SIDE SHARPLY AND YOU HAVE TO STOP AND RESTART THE CAR TO GET ALL THE LIGHTS TO TURN OFF AND COME BACK TO NORMAL. I HAVE HAD THE BRAKES DONE AND REDONE SEVERAL TIMES AND THIS STILL OCCURS.. ON EACH OCCASION WE COULD GET OUT OF IT, BUT ITS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT. TOYOTA HAS OBVIOUSLY IGNORED THIS..I HAVE DOWNLOAD THE COMPLAINTS AND THERE ARE >500 ON THIS VERY TOPIC. THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, BUT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO ACCELERATE. THE CONTACT TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED THE VEHICLE AND IT OPERATED NORMALLY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THAT THE COMPUTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED; HOWEVER, THAT WOULD NOT GUARANTEE TO REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE REPAIR WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,000.
AFTER PRESSING THE 4WD AND CENTER DIFFERENTIAL BUTTON, THE CENTER DIFFERENTIAL FROZE AND WOULD NOT UNLOCK. THE DEALER MECHANIC COULD NOT UNLOCK THE DIFFERENTIAL AND HAD TO REPLACE THE SOLENOID (SWITCH) IN ORDER TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER CLAIMS THIS IS DUE TO A MAINTENANCE ISSUE ( SUCH AS LOCK AND UNLOCK THE CENTER DIFFERENTIAL A FEW TIMES A YEAR) BUT WE DISAGREE. THERE I NO INFORMATION ABOUT THIS IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL OR MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS. THIS SHOULD NOT OCCUR OR IF THE SOLENOID IS FAULTY, THE CENTER DIFFERENTIAL SHOULD NOT REMAIN LOCKED AS THIS IS CAUSES A SERIOUS STEERING SAFETY PROBLEM. *TR

THIS DEFECT CAN CAUSE AN ACCIDENT FROM THE REAR OR ONCOMING TRAFFIC. OTHER 2004 MODELS HAVE REPORTED SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH ESC, TRAC CONTROL AND ABS.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR TRUNK EXTERIOR LATCH FAILED, MAKING THE DOOR INOPERABLE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHO STATED THAT THE LATCH WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURE WAS MADE AWARE OF THE VEHICLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000.
2004 TOYOTA SEQUOIA SR5 WITH 4WD WITH ABOUT 113,000 MILES. WE STARTED OUT ON OUR FIRST ROAD TRIP SATURDAY AND WERE HAVING NO ISSUES UNTIL WE STOPPED TO GET GAS AN HOUR AND A HALF INTO THE TRIP. AFTER GETTING GAS WE GOT BACK ON THE HIGHWAY. ONCE WE SPED UP TO ABOUT 70MPH THE VCS LIGHT STARTED BLINKING AND THE VEHICLE STARTED SLOWING DOWN ON ITS OWN FROM 70 TO ABOUT 45. WE WOULD TRY TO ACCELERATE THE CAR WITH THE GAS PEDDLE WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING, BUT IT DIDN'T HELP. ONCE THE SPEED DROPPED TO ABOUT 45 THE GAS PEDDLE WOULD RESPOND AND WE COULD SPEED BACK UP TO ABOUT 70 OR 80. THEN THE CYCLE WOULD START ALL OVER AGAIN. OVER THE COURSE OF A 13 HOUR ROAD TRIP THIS HAPPENED OFF AND ON ABOUT HALF OF THE TRIP. WHILE THE CAR SLOWS DOWN ON ITS OWN, PRESSING THE GAS PEDDLE EITHER DOESN'T DO ANYTHING OR AT TIMES IT JUST REVS THE RPM'S WITHOUT INCREASING SPEED. WE TRIED SEVERAL DIFFERENT THINGS TO GET THIS PROBLEM TO STOP. WE DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY TO TRY TO RESET THE COMPUTER BUT THAT DID NOT WORK. WE ALSO TRIED TO PUT IT INTO 4WD AND TAKE IT OUT AND IT SEEMED THAT SOMETIMES HELPED AND AT OTHER TIMES IT DIDN'T. SOMETIMES THE LIGHT WILL FLICKER AND DOESN'T SEEM TO REALLY AFFECT THE ACCELERATION AS MUCH. OTHER TIMES IT WILL REALLY ACT UP AND WE HAVE TO PUT ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND FINALLY GET OFF THE HIGHWAY TO TRY SOMETHING OUT OF DESPERATION. ALL OF THIS HAPPENS ON DRY, SMOOTH HIGHWAYS. IT HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE DAYS IN A ROW. IT ONLY SEEMS TO ACT UP WHEN WE ARE GOING ABOVE 55 OR 60 MPH. *TR
DATE AND MILEAGE ABOVE ARE APPROXIMATE. WHILE ACCELERATING ON AN UP INCLINED ENTRANCE RAMP TO THE BEN FRANKLIN BRIDGE IN PHILADELPHIA, THE ENGINE LOST SPEED AND THE VEHICLE QUICKLY SLOWED. NO ONE WAS BEHIND ME SO THERE WAS MINIMAL DANGER. THE BEHAVIOR WAS SIMILAR TO SNOW/ICE SKID CONTROL WHEREBY THE ENGINE DECOUPLES AND THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECOMES USELESS. AFTER ABOUT 5 SECONDS POWER RETURNED. ON 6/24/2014 (MILEAGE 165,400) MY BRAKE LIGHT CAME ON. I COINCIDENTALLY HAD AN 5,000 MILE SERVICE APPOINTMENT TODAY (6/24/2014) AND THE DIAGNOSIS WAS A CODE C1247 - ABS ECU (COMPUTER) IS FAILING. THE MECHANIC EXPLAINED THAT THE ECU HAD FAILING CIRCUITS, OR FAILING SOLDER CONNECTIONS. A LITTLE INTERNET RESEARCH SUGGESTED THAT THE UNIT MIGHT SIMPLY HAVE LOGIC PROBLEMS. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT WHEN THE BRAKE LIGHT IS ON, ALL SKID CONTROL AND ABS FUNCTIONALITY IS GONE. AS THE LIGHT WAS ON FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, AND IS NOW OFF I AM GOING TO SEE HOW THE VEHICLE PERFORMS AND IF SAFETY IS EFFECTED. *TR
