TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA SEQUOIA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS UNDERGOING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE, THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC NOTICED THE FRAME UNDER THE VEHICLE WAS CORRODED WITH HOLES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
WITH THE CAR ENGINE ON CLEAN SMOKE STARTED TO COME FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT HEATING SWITCH AREA, THE SMOKE DISSIPATED AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS WHEN I TURNED THE ENGINE OFF. THERE HAVE NOT BEEN ANY MALFUNCTIONS SINCE THEN.
VSC ACTIVATES FREQUENTLY ON LOW SPEED, 90 DEG TURNS, UNDER COMPLETELY DRY DRIVING CONDITIONS, CAUSING A BRIEF (SEVERAL SECONDS) LOSS OF POWER TO WHEELS. SEEMS TO PRIMARILY OCCUR ON RIGHT TURNS. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME ON CERTAIN TURNS, WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT IT MAY HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH VEHICLE ORIENTATION AND/OR INTERSECTION GEOMETRY.

2007 SEQUOIA VSC TRAC SENSOR LIGHTS TURNING ON AND OFF AND HEARING GRINDING NOISE WHEN ACCELERATING AND DECELERATING. ALONG WITH THE VSC TRAC SENSOR LIGHTS TURNING ON, THE BRAKE INDICATOR LIGHT TURNS ON AS WELL. THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE HAPPENED AS I WAS PICKING UP MY DAUGHTER FROM SCHOOL, AND AS I WAS PULLING AWAY FROM THE SCHOOL DOING NO MORE THAN 20 MPH - MY VEHICLE MADE A GRINDING NOISE AND ALL THE ABOVE LISTED INDICATOR LIGHTS CAME ON. I WAS ABLE TO (NERVOUSLY) DRIVE MY VEHICLE HOME. THIS HAS ALSO HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES BEFORE AT DIFFERENT SPEEDS. DURING THESE INSTANCES, I HAVE NOTICED DECREASE ACCELERATION AND MY VEHICLE FEELS LIKE THE REAR IS SLIDING FROM SIDE TO SIDE. I AM AFRAID OF NOT BEING ABLE TO STOP IN TIME, THE BRAKES FAILING COMPLETELY OR A TOTAL LOSS OF POWER AS A RESULT OF THIS.
TAKATA RECALL. I WAS NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA OF THE AIRBAG RECALL IN AUGUST 2015. I HAVE CHECKED REPEATEDLY AT MY LOCAL DEALER AND THEY DON'T HAVE ANY INFORMATION ON WHEN THE PARTS WILL BE AVAILABLE. INITIALLY, I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER IS SHOULD ONLY TAKE A COUPLE OF WEEKS.

WE WERE NOTIFIED BY TOYOTA THAT OUR FRONT PASSENGER AIR BAG HAS BEEN RECALLED AND WE HAVE NOT BEEN GIVEN A DATE WHEN IT WILL BE RESOLVED. WE WERE TOLD TO NOT USE THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT UNTIL THE AIRBAG HAS BEEN REPLACED BUT THERE IS NO TIMEFRAME FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. I FIND IT UNACCEPTABLE THAT THERE IS NO SET TIME TO FIX THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM IN OUR CAR.
I HAVE BEEN CALLING LONE STAR TOYOTA OF LEWISVILLE, TEXAS SINCE I RECEIVED THE FIRST RECALL NOTICE IN JULY 2015. EVERY TIME I CALL, THEY TELL ME THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS, STILL WAITING ON PARTS, OH NOW YOUR NAME IS NOT IN OUR SYSTEM FOR NEEDING ONE. THEY TOLD ME TODAY THAT THEY ARE JUST NOW RECEIVING PARTS THAT THEY ORDERED IN SEPTEMBER 2015. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. NO ONE CAN STOP DRIVING THEIR CAR FOR OVER A YEAR AND WAIT FOR PARTS. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREE WAY WHEN I FELT MY VEHICLE RATTLED AND A SOMETHING CAME OFF THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE. I WAS ABLE TO TAKE AN EXIT AND SAFETY. I GOT OUT AND CHECKED THE TIRE AND FOUND A 2X5 CHUNK OF RUBBER WAS MISSING FROM THE TIRE WALL AND THE TIRE WAS GOING FLAT. WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN THE BACK-HATCH TO PUT ON THE SPARE TIRE THE HATCH LATCH WOULDN'T WORK. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION I FOUND THE PLASTIC LATCH WAS BROKER AND MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO LOWER THE THE SPARE TIRE. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE CLOSE ENOUGH TO HOME TO DRIVE IT SLOWLY BEFORE THE TIRE WENT COMPLETELY FLAT. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I FOUND THE LATCH ISSUE TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH SEQUOIA 2002-2007 DUE TO CHEAP PLASTIC PART AND WITH OUT PROVIDING A SECONDARY SAFETY RELEASE TO OPEN THE BACK-HATCH IN CASE OF EMERGENCY. WE HAVE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE (NHTSA RECALL ID 15V286) FOR OUR 2007 TOYOTA SEQUOIA (VIN [XXX]) OVER THE SUMMER. WE HAVE MADE NUMEROUS ATTEMPTS TO HAVE THE RECOMMENDED REPAIR PERFORMED. HOWEVER, WE WERE PLACED ON WAITING LISTS AT TWO LOCAL DEALERSHIPS BECAUSE THE PART WAS ON BACKORDER. I HAVE SINCE MADE 4 PHONE CALLS TO TOYOTA CORPORATION (1-888-270-9371; CASE # [XXX]) BECAUSE THE RECALL LETTER RECOMMENDS LETTING NO ONE OCCUPY THE PASSENGER SEAT UNTIL THE REPAIR HAS BEEN MADE. I WAS INITIALLY TOLD THEY WOULD FACILITATE A LOANER CAR SINCE THE PART WAS STILL ON BACK ORDER. NOW I AM TOLD THERE IS A DEALER HOURS AWAY THAT HAS THE PART THOUGH THE LOCAL DEALERS DO NOT. IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME HOW OR WHY SOME DEALERS ARE RECEIVING THE PART WHILE OTHERS ARE NOT. TOYOTA CORPORATION CAN ONLY TELL ME "IT DEPENDS ON THE INDEPENDENT DEALERS' CONTRACT WITH TOYOTA." THEY ARE ALSO, REPORTEDLY, UNABLE TO SEND THE PART FROM ONE DEALER TO ANOTHER. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE AND TOYOTA IS TAKING NO RESPONSIBILITY. THE REAR LATCH WOULD NOT WORK DURING A CAMPING TRIP IN A REMOTE AREA. THE REAR SEATS HAD BEEN REMOVED AS PER THE OWNERS MANUAL PRIOR TO THE TRIP. THE REAR PORTION OF THE VEHICLE WAS FULL OF CAMPING GEAR, FOOD, WATER, AND OUR FIRST AIDE KIT . I SPRAINED MY HAND AND BACK WHILE FIRST ATTEMPTING REPEATED TIMES TO OPEN THE TAILGATE AND THEN HAVING TO RESORT TO LIFTING HEAVY EQUIPMENT THROUGH THE BACK WINDOW AND ALSO OVER THE PASSENGER SEATS. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA DEALER AT OUT FIRST OPPORTUNITY. WE WERE TOLD THAT TOYOTA WAS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM WHICH WAS DESCRIBED TO MY WIFE AND I AS WEAK ENGINEERING AND A PLASTIC PART ALSO KNOW TO FAIL. WE WERE TOLD THAT THE FAILURE COULD HAVE BEEN RAISED BY DRIVING THE VEHICLE ON DUSTY ROADS, BECAUSE THE LATCH WAS NOT PROTECTED FROM DUST AND IT WAS POORLY DESIGNED AND WAS LIKELY TO FAIL IF IT GOT DIRTY. WE LEARNED FROM THIS DEALER THAT WE HAD ALREADY HAD THE LATCH REPLACED A YEAR PRIOR. WE WERE TOLD THAT TOYOTA WOULD NO LONGER STAND BEHIND REPAIRS TO THIS VEHICLES TAILGATE LATCH BECAUSE THE PROBLEM WAS CHRONIC AND THE REPLACEMENT PARTS HAVE NOT BEEN IMPROVE TO PREVENT EXPECTED FAILURES. THE DEALER REPLACED, CLEANED AND LUBRICATE THE LATCH PARTS AND THEN ATTEMPTED TO PROTECT THEM USING A SURPLUS PLASTIC BAG. I AM CONCERNED THAT WHEN THE LATCH FAILS AGAIN IT MAY BE DURING AN EMERGENCY, OR CAUSE ANOTHER INJURY, OR ENTRAPMENT... *TR
THE SECONDARY INJECTION SYSTEM HAS FAILED AT 125K MILES. TOYOTA IS A AWARE OF THIS DEFECT AND HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY FOR THIS ISSUE ON 2008-2010 SEQUOIA. THE 2007 HAS THE SAME ENGINE AND SAME DEFECTIVE PARTS BUT TOYOTA WILL NOT COVER THE REPLACEMENT. THIS CAN COST THE CUSTOMER UPWARDS OF 3K TO FIX. CUSTOMER SATISFACTION? NOT SO MUCH. GUESS I'LL PUT THE MONEY INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE BUT NOT A TOYOTA.
AFTER COMPLAINING ABOUT DIFFICULT STEERING AT LOW SPEEDS, E.G., PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE, I HAD AN ALIGNMENT DONE AT A TOYOTA DEALER, BUT DEFERRED HAVING A POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACED UNTIL THE NECESSARY PART COULD BE OBTAINED. DRIVING HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND SHORTLY AFTER EXITING A FREEWAY, I WAS BACKING UP AS PART OF A Y-TURN WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY COLLAPSED TOWARD THE FRONT RIGHT, AS THOUGH THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL HAD FALLEN OFF. AFTER GETTING THE CAR TOWED BACK TO THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINT HAD BROKEN. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, IT PROBABLY WOULD HAVE CAUSED A SERIOUS, PERHAPS FATAL ACCIDENT. I'VE SINCE LEARNED THAT THIS MODEL YEAR TOYOTA SEQUOIA WAS RECALLED FOR FAULTY BALL JOINTS, BUT THAT OUR VEHICLE WAS MANUFACTURED AFTER THE DEFECTIVE PARTS WERE NO LONGER USED. MY CONCERN IS THAT OTHERS MIGHT BE DRIVING AROUND WITH PARTS THAT ARE STILL FAULTY, AND THAT THIS PROBLEM COULD LEAD TO OTHER SERIOUS OR EVEN FATAL ACCIDENTS. *TR
ON MONDAY AFTERNOON 1/19/2015 WAS DRIVING MY 2007 TOYOTA SEQUOIA 40 MPH AS I DROVE MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY DROPPED ON THE LEFT SIDE & MY TIRE FLEW OFF. DAMAGE WAS DONE TO MY SUSPENSION AS IT SCRAPPED & HIT THE CONCRETE PAVEMENT DAMAGE WAS DONE TO MY RIM. NOW THE DEALERSHIP I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM IS CURRENTLY WORKING TO RESOLVE MY ISSUE. WHAT HAPPENED TO ME HAS HAPPENED TO MANY OTHERS WHERE THEY WILL INPUT YOUR VIN INTO TOYOTA SYSTEM BUT IT DOES NOT POPULATE THAT YOUR VEHICLE IS INVOLVED IN THE RECALL. THE DRIVER SUSTAINED UNKNOWN INJURIES THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A SALVAGE YARD. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,890.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. SUDDENLY MY TRUCK BEGAN VIBRATING HARSHLY. SOON AFTER, THE TRUCK STALLED OUT. I HAD NO BRAKING OR STEERING ASSIST AT ALL. THE TRUCK WOULDN'T START SO I COULDN'T PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. BEING STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY WAS A FRIGHTENING EXPERIMENT. I HAD IT TOWED TO A LOCAL INDEPENDENT SHOP. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN FOUND A BROKEN INTAKE VALVE SPRING. THIS IS A COSTLY REPAIR FOR A TRUCK WITH ONLY 68,000 MILES ON IT. *TR

THE CONTACT RECEIVED A RECALL NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V285000 (AIR BAGS) AND STATED THAT THE PART NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. Rear hatch/latch. I purchased my 2007 Sequoia lightly used in 2013. Luckily I purchased a 3 year extended warranty also. Within a year my rear hatch broke for the 1st time, I was unable to open the rear gate, my warranty covered the parts & Labor, within a year it broke again, this time the door would not latch closed, it freely opened & would or could not be secured. This happened while out of town (Fairbanks, AK. In Feb. -40 degrees) luckily the dealership had the parts & was able to fix it quickly. Still covered by my extended warranty. That dealership told me about the consistent problem & I was told about the cheap parts, but also a poor design as far as weather & grime able to reach the components & cause corrosion quickly. It broke one more time before my warranty expired (#3) again unable to open the rear gate. That repair didn’t even last 3 months, But the warranty was expired & I had a very reliable mechanic replace it this time (#4). Much cheaper than what Toyota wanted to charge me. He did a little weather preventative repair and I actually got nearly 2 years on that repair. He also said it was a terrible design flaw on the rear hatch, & there was significant corrosion on many other parts in the rear gate. He cleaned it up as well as possible. When it broke the 5th time, I was furious, & couldn’t see the point of the $750.00+ repair (Alaska is more $$), again was broken in the unable to open position. So I used the window & crawling over the seats method for over a year, until my window started making horrible noise when opening. I made an appointment with Toyota in Anchorage, AK to repair it this time as I had a recall taken care of at the same time. The only visible corrosion on the vehicle was around the latch, the window does not work properly, & you hear parts rattling when you open & close the gate now. I realize the open gate break is not common, But that was a horribly dangerous situation, recall is needed immediately for safety & reputation

THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA WAS BEING DRIVEN ON THE FREEWAY AT 65 MPH WHEN IT WAS STRUCK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BY A VW JETTA THAT CUT ACROSS SEVERAL LANES AS IT ENTERED THE HIGHWAY IMPACTING THE SEQUOIA IN THE REAR QUARTER PANEL AND THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE FENDER, AS WELL AS SOME CONTACT WITH THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT WHEEL, THIS SIDE IMPACT BROKE THE DRIVERS SIDE FRONT WHEEL CONTROL ARM, THE WHEEL TURNED TO THE LEFT TEARING THE TIRE APART PULLING THE SEQUOIA TO THE LEFT CAUSING IT TO CRASH INTO THE CENTER DIVIDER ON THE FREEWAY. THE IMPACT FRACTURED THE DRIVER'S STERNUM. *TR
WHEN AT A COMPLETE STOP (BRAKES APPLIED), ONCE RELEASING BRAKE AND SLOWLY STARTING TO MOVE (LESS THAN 1 MPH), EVERYONE IN THE VEHICLE FEELS A NUDGE (LIKE GETTING REAR ENDED OR A BAD DRIVE-LINE U-JOINT). ALSO, FEEL A SIMILAR NUDGE WHEN THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SHIFTS FROM 3RD TO 4TH GEAR (POSSIBLY 4TH TO 5TH GEAR WITH THE OVER-DRIVE ON) AT ABOUT 50 MPH. THESE CONDITIONS CONSTANTLY OCCUR EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN (EVERYDAY!). REPORTED BOTH CONDITIONS TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE NOV 2012 (WHILE UNDER THE EXTENDED WARRANTY), AND THE DEALER CONTINUES TO SAY THIS IS NORMAL AND CONTINUES TO DIAGNOSE AS SUSPENSION SPRING WRAP/TENSION. THE DEALER ACTION WAS TO LUBE THE DRIVE-LINE U-JOINTS (WITH NO IMPROVEMENT). I DO NOT BUY IT, AND BELIEVE THERE IS A MUCH BIGGER ISSUE/DEFECT POTENTIALLY WITH THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND OVER-DRIVE. NOW MY EXTENDED WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED AND THE NUDGE CONTINUES AND HAS INTENSIFIED. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN NOT TO MENTION I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SELL THE VEHICLE WITH THIS CONDITION (S.O.L). MY RECOMMENDATION, DO NOT BUY A TOYOTA TRUCK OR SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE UNTIL TOYOTA ADDRESSES THE ISSUE/DEFECT. *TR
THE REAR LATCH WHICH CONTROLS THE OPENING OF THE REAR HATCH BROKE. THIS PART IS MADE OF PLASTIC (PERHAPS COSTING 0.30), AND IT IS SHELTERED FROM DIRECT SUN AND WEAR AND TEAR BY BEING COVERED WITH A PART OF THE HATCH WHICH IS MADE OF STEEL. THE HATCH WHEN THIS PART IS BROKEN CANNOT BE OPENED. THIS MEANS ONE CANNOT GAIN ACCESS TO THE SPARE TIRE OR THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THIS PART COSTS OVER $90, AND THE LABOR TO REPAIR IS APPROXIMATELY $170. COMBINED THIS APPROACHES $300 WITH TAX. WHEN I BROUGHT THIS INTO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP, I WAS INFORMED THAT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND THEY POINTED OUT THAT THEY HAD TWO OTHER SEQUOIAS CURRENTLY IN THE SHOP HAVING THE SAME REPAIR BEING PERFORMED. THEY HAD THE PART IN STOCK BECAUSE IT OCCURS SO OFTEN. A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET HAS SHOWN THAT THIS HAS OCCURRED TENS OF THOUSANDS OF TIMES. A RECALL WOULD APPEAR TO BE IN ORDER. *TR
MY VEHICLE IS A TOYOTA SEQUOIA 2004 4 WHEEL DRIVE. SINCE ABOUT 2 YEARS, THE VSC AND BRAKE LIGHTS STAY ON OFF AND ON. I TOOK THIS TO THE LOCAL DEALER. HE SAID THIS IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM IN THE SEQUOIA VEHICLES STRETCHING FROM 2001 TO 2007. HE WANTED TO CHANGE A COMPUTER COSTING ABOUT $1200.00. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING AT ABOUT 40 MPH IT SUDDENLY LOSES ENGINE POWER AND THE VEHICLE BECOMES HARD TO STEER. BOTH THE VSC OFF AND TRAC OFF LIGHTS CAME ON. I HAD TO PULL TO THE SIDE AND THE CAR DIED COMPLETELY. I TURNED OFF THE CAR BUT COULD NOT TURN IT ON IMMEDIATELY. I WAITED FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES AND TRIED AGAIN AND IT STARTED UP FINE, BUT AFTER I DROVE FOR LESS THAN HALF MILE THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN. IT HAPPENED A TOTAL OF 6 TIMES WITHIN A COUPLE OF MILES. SINCE THEN IT'S BEEN HAPPENING EVERY FEW DAYS. TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC BUT THEY COULD NOT PULL A CODE. WHEN I TRIED TO OPEN THE BACK HATCH, THE LATCH BROKE. I HAD IT REPLACED ON THE ABOVE DATE. ABOUT A YEAR LATER, IT BROKE AGAIN. TOYOTA REIMBURSED ME WHAT IT COST TO HAVE IT FIXED AGAIN AT A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP ON 8/19/13. ABOUT ANOTHER YEAR LATER IT BROKE A THIRD TIME. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA, THEY SAID THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE TO FIX THIS RECURRING PROBLEM, I WAS ON MY OWN. I CAN ONLY GET INTO THE TRUNK BUT PUTTING THE WINDOW UP AND DOWN. (THERE IS ONLY A 1 YEAR WARRANTY ON THIS PART). IT HAS BEEN ABOUT A YEAR SINCE IT BROKE AGAIN AND A FRIEND SUGGESTED I MAKE THIS COMPLAINT. I HAVE RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND OTHERS WITH MY CAR HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT HAVING THIS SAME RECURRING PROBLEM. THEY CLAIM THE PART THAT IS BEING USED IS PLASTIC. THIS IS VERY UNSAFE!! THE VSC TRAC, VSC OFF, AND BRAKE LIGHT COME ON THIS TRUCK. WHEN THESE LIGHTS COME ON MY CAR GOES INTO A CRAZY SLAMMING MODE. IT SHAKES THE WHOLE CAR AND MY CAR WILL NOT STOP! 11/02/2011, PLASTIC REAR HATCH OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE BROKE. I AM UNABLE TO OPEN THE HATCH. DEALER SAID IT MAY TAKE UP TO 2 HRS. TO FIX @ $105.00/HR. PLUS PARTS.
