I TOOK MY TACOMA TO A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE FRAME REPLACED AS PER THE RECALL BUT TOYOTA WOULD NOT REPLACE THE FRAME BECAUSE TRUCK HAS A REBUILT TITLE BUT STILL HAS THE SAME FRAME IS THIS LEGAL FOR TOYOTA TO DENY THIS FRAME REPLACEMENT?
TOYOTA TRUCK RECALL ON FRAME RUST AND CORROSION. I BROUGHT TRUCK TO PRIME TOYOTA LANCASTER MA THE FRAME WAS COATED WITH AN UNDERCOAT PAINT. THE TRUCK WENT IN FOR REPAIRS WHEN IT WAS ON THE LIFT THE MECHANIC SAID THERE WERE HOLES AND CORROSION IN THE FRAME AND IT WAS A SAFETY ISSUE TO DRIVE. I ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT HAVING IT FIXED I WAS TOLD TO CONTACT CORPORATE. CORPORATE TOLD ME THE RECALL HAS BEEN CLOSED OUT AND THAT DID WHAT WAS NECESSARY TO FIX IT. THEY JUST COVERED UP THE RUST AND CORROSION. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE MY TRUCK FOR FEAR I MIGHT GET SERIOUSLY INJURED. I NEED HELP THANK YOU!
FRAME DEFECT WITH RUST AND CORROSION. NOT SURE WHEN THE CORROSION STARTED, BUT I DISCOVERED NOV 11, 2016 - WHILE DOING A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE. THE MAJOR RUST AND CORROSION APPEAR TO BE CONCENTRATED NEAR THE CATALYTIC CONVERTERS ON BOTH SIDES OF THE VEHICLE AFFECTING THE INTEGRITY OF THE FRAME. SEE ATTACHED PHOTOS FOR LEFT SIDE (DRIVER SIDE) AND RIGHT SIDE (PASSENGER SIDE).
RECALL # 14V-604, REAR LEAF SPRINGS RECALLED. HEARTLAND TOYOTA IN BREMERTON WASHINGTON SAYING THEY WILL DO WORK, BUT NOT RETURN VEHICLE IN CONDITION THEY FOUND IT. THEY ARE REFUSING TO REPLACE THE "ADD-A-LEAF" THAT WAS PUT ON THE TRUCK, ON TOP OF THE EXISTING, RECALLED, LEAF SPRING. HEARTLAND HAS SERVICED THIS VEHICLE FOR 10 YEARS IN ITS CURRENT CONDITION. I WAS TOLD BY A SERVICE ASSOCIATE THAT IT IS BECAUSE OF A "NEW SERVICE MANAGER," AND THAT THEY HAVE DONE THE FULL WORK MANY TIMES. IN FACT, AN ASSOCIATE OF MINE HAD THE SAME REAR LEAF SPRINGS REPLACED, AND THIS DEALERSHIP DID REPLACE HIS "ADD-A-LEAF", RETURNING HIS VEHICLE IN THE CONDITION IT WAS DROPPED OFF IN. "THEIR LIABILITY" WAS THE REASON I WAS GIVEN FOR THEIR ONLY BEING WILLING TO DO AN ABBREVIATED JOB.
EVERY TIME I TURN THE IGNITION TO START MY ENGINE THE GAS GAUGE TAKES ABOUT 15 SECONDS TO RESPOND. MOST FREQUENTLY THAN NOT, THE SPEEDOMETER AND THE COOLANT GAUGE DO NOT WORK WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION. WHEN I GET TO MY DESTINATION AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE, AND RESTART, THE GAUGES WORK (SOMETIMES). I ASKED THE DEALER ABOUT IT, AND THEY CLAIM THERE IS NO RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM, AND IT WOULD COST $1000.00 TO REPLACE THE MAIN HARNESS THAT IS CAUSING THE PROBLEM. THE TACHOMETER, AND THE ODOMETER WORK JUST FINE. I DO FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE, CONSIDERING SOMETIMES I DO NOT KNOW WHAT MY SPEED IS, OR IF MY ENGINE IS GETTING TO HOT, AND OVER HEATING, CAUSING DAMAGE TO IT. I'VE BEEN A TOYOTA TRUCK OWNER SINCE 1987, AND THIS IS MY SECOND TRUCK. YOUR VEHICLES ARE VERY DEPENDABLE, AND I HOPE YOU CAN RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO BE SERVICED FOR NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V604000 (SUSPENSION). THE CAMPAIGN EXPIRED IN MARCH OF 2016 AND THE UNDERCOATING, PERFORMED BY ANOTHER DEALER, FAILED TO STOP THE CORROSION. IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT EITHER THE FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED OR THE ENTIRE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 142,000.
WHEN USING AIR CONDITION OR HEATING IT DOES NOT GO ON UNLESS YOU STEP ON A BUTTON LOCATED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE FLOOR WHICH THEN THE UNIT WILL REGULATE AND TURN ON. YOU CAN FEEL A CLICK WHEN YOU PRESS IT ON THE FLOOR DON'T KNOW WHY THIS IS.
DRIVER AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON. WHY IS MY VIN NOT INCLUDED IN THE FOLLOWING RECALL BY TOYOTA FOR AIRBAGS FOR TACOMA PICKUPS. NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 12V092000 COMPONENT(S): AIR BAGS
WHILE UNDERNEATH TRUCK INVESTIGATING NOISE FROM VIBRATING METAL I NOTICED THE FRAME BADLY RUSTED NEAR THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER TO THE POINT WHERE A LARGE HOLE FORMED. RUSTED PIECES OF THE FRAME FALL OFF WHEN LIGHTLY TAPPED WITH A HAMMER. A QUICK INTERNET SEARCH MADE IT APPARENT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. TRUCK WAS BOUGHT AND ALWAYS REGISTERED IN A SOUTHERN STATE BUT WAS DRIVEN IN ILLINOIS FOR 3 YEARS WHILE ON MILITARY ORDERS. THERE IS SURFACE RUST EVERYWHERE BUT I HAVEN'T DONE A COMPLETE INSPECTION YET TO FIND OTHER HOLES.
THE TACOMA IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO UNUSUAL AMOUNTS OF FRAME RUST AND WHILE UNDERNEATH MINE, CHANGING THE OIL IN THE TRUCK I FOUND HOLES IN THE TRUCK FRAME LARGE ENOUGH TO FIT MY FIST IN. SO FAR I'VE RECEIVED THE RUN AROUND FROM TOYOTA. THEY HAD A LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN AND REPLACED MANY TRUCK FRAMES. THAT STOPPED IN MARCH OF 2016. NOW THEY AREN'T DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND LEAVING IT ON THE SHOULDERS OF AMERICANS TO DEAL WITH. IN ADDITION TO THAT, AFTER THEIR OWN ADMISSION, ONE COULD ONLY SUSPECT THAT THE FRAMES THAT WEREN'T REPLACED HAVE A HIGH LIKELIHOOD OF FAILURE ON THE HIGHWAYS, ESPECIALLY IN STATES WHERE THEY (THE STATES) DON'T DO RIGOROUS INSPECTIONS TO GET VEHICLES LICENSED. AFTER THE RESEARCH THAT I'VE DONE I'VE DISCOVERED A FEW THINGS; THE TRUCKS HAVE A FUNDAMENTAL FRAME PROBLEM. TOYOTA ADMITTED THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM. MANY OF US, (TACOMA OWNERS) CAN'T AFFORD TO REPLACE THE TRUCK FRAME OR PURCHASE ANOTHER VEHICLE TO REPLACE IT WITH POTENTIALLY MAKING THE HIGHWAYS AND TOYOTA DRIVERS UNSAFE BECAUSE OF A KNOWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT TOYOTA WON'T RECTIFY. ADDITIONALLY, I'M SURE BASED ON FORUMS AND OTHER REVIEWS I'VE UNCOVERED ONLINE, THAT MANY OF THE VEHICLE OWNERS ARE COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF THE DEFECT AND THE THREAT TO THEIR OWN SAFETY, AND THE SAFETY OF THOSE AROUND THEM ON THE ROADWAYS DUE TO SAID DEFECT.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR ROUTINE SERVICING AND WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS EXTENSIVE RUST, CORROSION, HOLES, AND CRACKS IN THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT PASS AN INSPECTION UNLESS THE PARTS WERE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INDICATED THAT THE RECALL REMEDY STATUTE EXPIRED IN MARCH OF 2016, BUT REFUSED TO PROVIDE A RECALL REPAIR SOLUTION. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN OF WHEN THE VEHICLE WOULD BE REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. AFTER PUMPING TEN GALLONS OF FUEL IN THE VEHICLE AND DRIVING HOME, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE FRONT STRAP HOLDING THE FUEL TANK FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000. UPDATED 010/04/16*LJ *TR
THE LEAF SPRINGS THE DEALER REPLACED UNDER A RECALL FAILED. WE HAD A TOW PACKAGE ON OUR TACOMA & HAD NO PROBLEM TOWING OUR CAMPER WITH THE EXISTING LEAF SPRINGS. THE NEW LEAF SPRINGS FAILED WHEN WE TRIED TO TOW OUR CAMPER & THE DEALER SAYS IT'S OUR FAULT FOR OVERLOADING THE SUSPENSION. I WISH I HAD IGNORED THE RECALL NOTICE.
ON FRIDAYAUGUST19 2016 AS I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA A RATTLE DEVELOPED IN MY FRONT END. COME TO FIND OUT THE FRAME ON MY TRUCK HAD ROTTED LEAVING THE FRONT STABILIZER HANGING. WITH THIS I HAD CALLED TOYOTA CORPORATE ON MONDAY THE 22 WERE I WAS TOLD AN ADVISOR WOULD CONTACT ME WITHIN 24 HRS. DURING THAT TIME I HAD PUT OUT A CALL TO BALISE TOYOTA IN WEST SPRINGFIELD MA. WERE I TAKE MY TRUCK FOR SERVICE. I HAD SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AND WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING TOYOTA WOULD DO FOR ME PERTAINING TO THE RUSTED FRAME ON MY VEHICLE DUE TO IT HAVING THE FRAME COATED DURING THEIR CAMPAIGN IN 2013. I THEN RECEIVED CALL FROM ADVISOR ASSIGNED TO ME THROUGH CORPORATE WERE I WAS ALSO TOLD THE SAME THING. HERES MY VIEW , YES I GOT THE COATING IN 2013 WERE IT MADE THE FRAME EVEN WORSE ONCE IT CAME OFF. MY TRUCK IS NOW A SAFETY ISSUE. NOT EITHER OF THE TOYOTA REPS EVEN OFFERED TO LOOK AT THE TRUCK OR SHOWED ANY CONCERN ABOUT MY SAFETY. THEY CLAIM THERE WAS A DEAD LINE ON THE REPLACEMENT FRAMES ENDING ON MARCH OF 2015. QUESTION HOW DO YOU PUT A DEADLINE ON SOMETHING WHICH IS GOING TO HAPPEN IN TIME POSSIBLY RESULTING IN INJURY OR EVEN DEATH. TOYOTA MADE A BIG MISTAKE WITH THE MANUFACTURING OF THESE FRAMES AND EVERYONE KNOWS THIS. THEY NEED TO BE LIABLE AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR MISTAKE. I EVEN HAVE PAST SERVICE RECORDS WERE TOYOTA HAS GIVEN THE GREEN LIGHT ON MY FRAME/BOLTS. THEIR ADVISOR WOULD ONLY SAY WE DON'T RECOMMEND YOU DRIVING YOUR VEHICLE AFTER I ASKED HER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I WAS TO DRIVE MY VEHICLE AND THE FRAME FAILED RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH. THEY PRAISE CUSTOMER SAFETY ON THEIR WEB SITES, THIS IS HARDLY THE CASE.
THE FRAME ON THIS TRUCK HAD BEEN REPLACED DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST. THE REAR BUMPER SUPPORT BC AND FACTORY INSTALLED TOW HITCH WERE RE INSTALLED. THAT WAS NOVEMBER 2014. IN AUGUST OF BRAD 2016 WHILE TOWING A SMALL CAMPER ON THE MASS TURNPIKE, THE HITCH TO FRAME ATTACHMENT FAILED ON THE DRIVER'S SIDE OF THE FRAME. PULLED OVER WHEN I HEARD THE THUMP.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE HAS SIGNIFICANT RUST AND HOLES ROTTED THROUGH IT. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAD OFFERED A "LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN". I NEVER RECEIVED A MAILING REGARDING THIS CAMPAIGN. AFTER FILING A COMPLAINT AND RECEIVING A CASE NUMBER I WAS CONTACTED AND TOLD THAT THE LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN HAD EXPIRED AND TOYOTA "WILL NOT EXTEND THE WARRANTY OR OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE". I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT SINCE I HAD ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM TOYOTA WAS NOT LIABLE FOR ANY FUTURE DAMAGES, INJURY, OR DEATH. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE THAT TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGES THEIR OWN MANUFACTURING DEFECT BUT THEN WILL NOT HELP THEIR CUSTOMERS AFTER A SET DEADLINE. WHO DECIDED THAT A TACOMA OWNER'S SAFETY DOES NOT MATTER AFTER A SET DATE? THESE VEHICLES ARE NO LONGER SAFE TO DRIVE AND WILL FAIL STATE INSPECTIONS, RENDERING THEM USELESS WITHOUT THE OWNERS PAYING HUGE AMOUNTS OF THE MONEY TO FIX A POOR QUALITY FRAME THAT TOYOTA ADMITTED WAS THEIR FAULT. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. TOYOTA RESPONDED: "GOOD MORNING: THE EXTENDED WARRANTY FRAME PROGRAM FOR 2005-2008 TACOMA VEHICLES ENDED ON 3/31/16. AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALER NEEDED TO INSPECT THE FRAME BY 3/31/16 FOR VEHICLE TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR A FRAME REPLACEMENT." THERE ARE HUNDREDS OF OTHER TACOMA OWNERS FILING SIMILAR COMPLAINTS WITH BBB AND WITH NHTSA, PROVING THAT THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT AND TOYOTA NEEDS TO STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT BY CONTINUING THE LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN AND REPAIRING/REPLACING THE INFERIOR VEHICLE FRAMES THAT THEY SOLD TO THE PUBLIC.
RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE AND TOOK TO LOCAL DEALER. DEALER REFUSED TO WORK ON VEHICLE BECAUSE OF AFTERMARKET LIFT KIT (3"). I WAS INFORMED THAT IN ORDER TO DO RECALL I HAD TO PAY $480 TO REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION IN ORDER TO DO RECALL WHICH AMOUNTS TO 3 HRS LABOR CHARGE. I DIDN'T AGREE TO THAT AND LEFT. I ENDED UP CALLING TOYOTA WITH THE ISSUE AND ASKING FOR A RESOLUTION TO THIS AND WAS INFORMED THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I FOUND IT TO BE INTERESTING THAT NO ONE I TALKED TO HAD RUN INTO THIS SITUATION BEFORE. THE RECALL AFFECTS 600K TRUCKS AND APPARENTLY I'M THE ONLY ONE WITH A LIFT KIT INSTALLED ,WHICH IS LUDICROUS. I FEEL TOYOTA HAS RESPONSIBILITY TO CORRECT THIS AND THEY ARE UNDER LAW TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. IN CONCLUSION I JUST WANT THIS SAFETY ISSUE RESOLVED AND THEY ARE TELLING ME TO PAY FOR A SAFETY DEFECT THAT IS NOT OF ANY FAULT OF MINE.
I AM WRITING TO YOU IN REFERENCE TO MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. AS YOU MAY BE AWARE, TACOMAS HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS IN THE STATES WITH HARSH WINTERS, AND WITH CORROSIONS OF THE FRAME FROM ROAD SALT. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SO EVIDENT THAT TOYOTA HAS ADMITTED TO NOT HAVING ADEQUATE CORROSION RESISTANT PROTECTION. THE FIRST TIME I BECAME AWARE OF THIS ISSUE WAS AT THE END OF JUNE 2016. I CALLED MY TOYOTA DEALER ABOUT TWO OTHER RECALLS AND INQUIRED ABOUT THE FRAME ISSUE AS WELL. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN TOLD ME THAT THE FRAME IN FACT HAD A 'LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN' ISSUED BY TOYOTA WHICH EXPIRED MARCH 31, 2016. HE SAID TO BRING IN MY TRUCK FOR THE OTHER TWO RECALLS (ONE WAS FOR THE LEAF SPRING) AND HE WOULD INSPECT THE FRAME (SEE PAGE 2 OF SERVICE INVOICE). AFTER INSPECTION, THE TECHNICIAN SAID HE DID NOT THINK THE TRUCK WOULD HOLD UP IN AN ACCIDENT. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE, IN CALIFORNIA, AND ASKED FOR THEIR HELP AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION ABOVE. THEY GAVE ME A CASE NUMBER (1607110805) AND SAID THEY WOULD GET BACK TO ME. WHEN I RECEIVED THE CALL BACK, THEY DECLINED MY REQUEST DO TO MISSING THE DEADLINE. IF THIS PROBLEM IS A KNOWN SITUATION WITH TACOMAS (ENOUGH FOR A 'LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN'), ONE WOULD THINK TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS, THEY WOULD SEND A CERTIFIED LETTER. NOT ONLY IS MY SAFETY IN JEOPARDY, BUT I CANNOT EVEN TRADE MY VEHICLE IN FOR ONE THAT WILL ENSURE MY SAFETY DUE TO FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS AND THE DECREASED VALUE OF MY TRUCK NOT HAVING THIS ISSUE RESOLVED. IF TOYOTA REALLY CARES ABOUT THEIR PRODUCT AND THE SAFETY OF THEIR CUSTOMERS, THEY WOULD DO THE RIGHT THING AND REPLACE MY TRUCK FRAME (ESPECIALLY SINCE ONE OF THEIR OWN CERTIFIED MECHANICS DETERMINED THE TRUCK HAS BEEN EFFECTED BY THE VERY SAME CAMPAIGN). BECAUSE MY TOYOTA TACOMA HAS A 3 IN LIFT KIT, TOYOTA WILL REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE LEAF SPRINGS BUT WILL NOT REINSTALL THE LIFT KIT. THIS WILL COST ME APPROXIMATELY THREE HUNDRED OF MY OWN MONEY. I FIND THIS UNACCEPTABLE-

THE CONTACT ALSO HEARD A THUD COMING FROM THE TRANSMISSION WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS BEING SLOWED TO A STOP. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V604000 (SUSPENSION). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE DRIVESHAFT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 120,000. UPDATED 08/17/16*LJ THE CONSUMER CHECKED THERE WAS A CRASH AND IT WAS REPORTED TO THE POLICE. NO FURTHER INFORMATION WAS PROVIDED. UPDATED 08/22/16.*JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE SUBFRAME UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE WAS CORRODED AND HAD HOLES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY CAMPAIGN, BUT THE CAMPAIGN HAD EXPIRED. RECORDS SHOW I HAD RECALL WORK DONE JUST DAYS BEFORE THIS TIME FRAME PERIOD BEGAN AND RECALL WORK DONE LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER IT EXPIRED. TOYOTA SAYS IT ISN'T THEIR PROBLEM , THAT I MISSED THIS TIME FRAME. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT IF IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE (AND IT IS) THAT IT SHOULD BE A RECALL AND NOT A LIMITED SERVICE CAMPAIGN. THE BRAKES FAILED WHEN I WAS EXITING A PARKING LOT AND DESCENDING A SHORT HILL TO THE MAIN STREET. I WAS UNABLE TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE IT ENTERED THE STREET BUT FORTUNATELY THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC AT THE TIME.
RUSTED TOW HITCH! AS I WAIT FOR A REPLACEMENT FRAME, DUE TO A RECENT RECALL, I INQUIRED ABOUT THE HEAVILY RUSTED, FACTORY INSTALLED, TOW HITCH. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK TO HAUL A 3,000+ LBS BOAT AND SEEING HOW THE RUST COULD JEOPARDIZE NORMAL OPERATIONS, AND PERHAPS CAUSE AN ACCIDENT, WORRIES ME A LOT. I WAS TOLD THE HITCH IS NOT COVERED YET IF I BOUGHT ONE IT COULD BE INSTALLED, FREE OF CHARGE, WHILE SWAPPING THE FRAME. I FEEL AS THE HITCH RUST IS DUE TO THE SAME REASON AS THE FRAME AND SO IT SHOULD BE EXCHANGED AS WELL. THE SERVICE MANAGER WALKED ME TO THE PART DEPT. AND THE HITCH (W/O WIRES) COST $411. I PURCHASED A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA IN AUGUST OF 2015. I TOOK MY VEHICLE TO A TOYOTA DEALER TO REMOVE A WHEEL LUG NUT IN SEPTEMBER OF 2015. I WAS ADVISED BY A TOYOTA SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE FRAME OF MY TRUCK BUT WHEN THE SERVICE RECORDS WERE CHECKED, THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED THAT THE RECALL SERVICE HAD BEEN PERFORMED ON MY TRUCK BY TREATING THE FRAME. ON MARCH 17 2016 MY SON TOOK THE TRUCK TO OUR LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER IN REFERENCE TO THE LEAF SPRING RECALL. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED THE SAME INFORMATION TO MY SON IN REFERENCE TO THE FRAME RECALL AND THAT THE SERVICE TREATMENT HAD BEEN PERFORMED. MY VEHICLE WAS NEVER INSPECTED ON THESE TWO OCCASIONS AT THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR POSSIBLE FRAME DAMAGE. MY SON AND I INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND LOCATED WHAT APPEARED TO BE RUST NEAR THE LEAF SPRING HANGERS WHICH WAS COMING UNDER THE PROTECTIVE COATING THAT HAD BEEN APPLIED BY TOYOTA. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER TO INSPECT THE FRAME. ON APRIL 15 2016 THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED ME THAT THE FRAME HAD A HOLE IN THE FRAME ON THE DRIVERS SIDE NEAR THE PART OF THE FRAME WHERE IT STARTS TO GO TOWARDS THE MOTOR. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE ADVISED THAT IN HIS OPINION THE HOLE HAD BEEN THERE FOR AWHILE AND THAT THE HOLE COULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN THAT LARGE IN A YEAR SINCE BEING TREATED.I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND WAS ADVISED THIS WAS NOT A RECALL BUT A SERVICE CAMPAIGN AND THAT IT EXPIRED ON MARCH 31 2016 AND THAT THEY COULD NOT GIVE ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE RUSTED FRAME.I ADVISED THE TOYOTA CASE MANAGER THAT I COULD UNDERSTAND IF IT HAD NEVER BEEN INSPECTED OR TREATED BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE WITH MY VEHICLE. I ALSO ADVISED THE CASE MANAGER THAT IT WAS APPARENT THAT THE FRAME TREATMENT DID NOT STOP THE PROBLEM WITH RUST IN THE FRAME. SHE JUST KEPT ADVISING THAT TOYOTA COULD NOT ASSIST ME WITH THIS MATTER.

I EXPERIENCED ROUGH (STIFF, BINDING) STEERING IN BOTH DIRECTIONS AND WITHIN TWO WEEKS IT WAS PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE. I THOUGHT I HAD A STEERING FLUID ISSUE, BUT THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY KNEW OF THIS PROBLEM AND CONFIRMED IT BY TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL. THEY KNEW RIGHT AWAY THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY A RUSTED U-JOINT ON THE BOTTOM OF THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT (P/N 4520304020). IN ADDITION TO THE STIFF STEERING GOING INTO A TURN, THE STEERING WOULD NOT RETURN TO STRAIGHT AND I UNEXPECTEDLY NEARLY WENT INTO THE CURB. I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION AND MUST BE BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF ALL 2005 TACOMA OWNERS. I HAVE NEVER BEEN ADVISED OF ANY NEED TO PERFORM ANY SPECIAL SERVICING OF THIS PART AT ANY MILEAGE INTERVAL. IT APPEARS TO BE A BAD DESIGN THAT ALLOWS SALTY WATER FROM WINTER ROADS TO GET INTO THE U-JOINT WHICH THEN RUSTS.

I WAS TOLD BY A FRIEND THERE WAS AN ISSUE AND TOYOTA WAS REPLACING THE FRAMES DUE TO INFERIOR QUALITY OF PRODUCTION CAUSING A SAFETY ISSUE IN WHICH THE FRAMES WERE RUSTING FROM THE INSIDE OUT. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE LOCAL DEALER ON 4/4/2016, I HAD TO WAIT UNTIL 4/13/2016 FOR THE FIRST AVAILABLE APPOINTMENT. UPON ARRIVING AT THE DEALER I WAS INFORMED THE "RECALL" EXPIRED MARCH 31ST AND THEY CAN DO NOTHING FOR ME. THEY REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK AT THE ISSUE. I CALLED TOYOTA TO ASK IF THERE WAS ANY RECOURSE AS I HAD NEVER RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF THIS ISSUE LET ALONE A DEADLINE. I WAS TOLD THIS WAS NOT A RECALL AND THE TIME HAD EXPIRED AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY WOULD DO FOR ME. I AM AFRAID THE TRUCK IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.

PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE A UNIVERSAL JOINT IN THE STEERING COLUMN THAT IS UNPROTECTED AND SUBJECT TO CORROSION. MY TRUCK IS CURRENTLY AT A DEALERSHIP FOR FOUR SAFETY RECALLS, ONE OF WHICH REQUIRES THE WHOLE FRAME TO BE REPLACED DUE TO CORROSION. I WILL NOT GET THE TRUCK BACK FOR ABOUT 3 MONTHS DUE TO A BACKLOG OF PARTS. THE FRAME IS RUSTED THROUGH IN TWO PLACES AND IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE IN THAT CONDITION. I REQUESTED THAT THE STEERING ISSUE BE LOOKED INTO WHILE IT IS IN THE SHOP AND EVERYTHING IS APART. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE STEERING ISSUE, GIVEN THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS ON LINE AND THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE PROBLEM MAY WARRANT LOOKING INTO. THEY SUGGESTED I CALLED TOYOTA. THREE PHONE CALLS TO TOYOTA. THEY ARE AWARE OF FRAME CORROSION ISSUES, BUT REFUSED TO CORRECT THIS, BECAUSE "THE REPLACEMENT PROGRAM NO LONGER APPLIES." CLEARLY THE MANUFACTURER IS AWARE OF A PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL, YET REFUSES TO ADDRESS AN ISSUE THAT IS A SAFETY RISK.

I HAD TALKED TO THE GUY I HAD GOTTEN THE TRUCK FROM AND HE SAID HE HAD NEVER GOTTEN A LETTER FROM TOYOTA, FOR THE LIGHT PROBLEM OR HE WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE FREE REPLACEMENT DONE.
