DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AT 20,000 MILES WHILE APPLYING THE ACCELERATOR AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THERE WAS A SPEWING NOISE AND THE ODOR OF FUEL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP, WHICH DETERMINED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ALTHOUGH, THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD SENSORS ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WERE REPLACED THREE TIMES THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD HAD NEVER BEEN REPLACED. THE ODOR BECAME WORSE AND NOW IS CAUSING DIZZINESS AND HEADACHES TO THE OCCUPANTS. UPDATED 7/3/2006 - *NM
I AM THE OWNER OF A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH DANGEROUS PULSATING, VIBRATING FRONT DISC BRAKES. I FIRST BROUGHT THIS PROBLEM TO THE ATTENTION OF MY DEALER ON JULY 31, 2002. THE VEHICLE HAD 12,894 MILES AT THE TIME. THE WARPED FRONT ROTORS WERE RESURFACED AND THE BRAKE PADS REPLACED. NEITHER THE FRONT ROTORS NOR THE CALIPERS WERE REPLACED. I WAS INFORMED AT THE TIME THAT THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT HAD BEEN MACHINED OFF THE ROTORS. THE PROBLEM QUICKLY REAPPEARED AND HAS GRADUALLY WORSENED OVER THE LAST 16,000 MILES. THE CAR IS DRIVEN VERY LIGHTLY AND HAS TOWED A HORSE TRAILER FOR APPROXIMATELY 200-300 MILES. TODAY THE TRUCK HAS 28, 600 MILES AND IS VERY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE ON ANY ROAD, BUT PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS ON LONGER DOWNHILL GRADES. I BROUGHT THIS TO THE ATTENTION OF THE DEALERSHIP EARLY IN JUNE 2006 WHEN I HAD DEFECTIVE OXYGEN SENSORS REPLACED. THEY CHECKED FOR RECALL NOTICES AND FOUND NONE. CURIOUSLY, THEY DID NOT NOTIFY ME OF THE TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ISSUED IN SEPTEMBER OF 2003. BASICALLY, THEY SAID IT WOULD COST ME A LOT OF MONEY TO HAVE THEM REPAIRED. IN LIGHT OF THE FACT THAT THIS PROBLEM RESULTS FROM DEFECTIVE FRONT BRAKES, AND THIS DEFECT EXISTED AT THE TIME THE VEHICLE LEFT TOYOTA'S POSSESSION, I ASKED TOYOTA TO PROPERLY REPAIR THE BRAKES BEFORE SERIOUS PROPERTY DAMAGE OR PERSONAL INJURY OCCURS. TOYOTA RESPONDED TO MY REQUEST ON JUNE 15, 2006 AS FOLLOWS: "WE HAVE CHECKED YOUR VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN#) AND THERE ARE NO OUTSTANDING SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGNS ON YOUR VEHICLE AT THIS TIME. THE WARRANTY FOR YOUR BRAKING SYSTEM (EXCLUDING WEAR ITEMS) IS 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST, FROM THE DATE OF FIRST USE FOR YOUR VEHICLE. BASED ON THE VIN (VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER) YOU PROVIDED. YOUR WARRANTY COVERAGE STARTED ON 3/15/2000. YOUR VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY OUTSIDE THESE WARRANTY PARAMETERS AND WE ARE UNABLE TO ASSIST WITH THE COST OF THIS REPAIR."
I OWN A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND A FEW YEARS AGO IT BEGAN TO SHED ITS PAINT. IT SPOTS UP LIKE IT IS CORRODED WITH A CHEMICAL THEN BEGINS TO PEEL OFF. BY THIS POINT THE WHOLE TRUCK HAS EITHER PEELED OFF OR IS SPOTTED. THE RUNNING BOARDS ARE ALSO CORRODED AND RUSTING WITH HOLES ALL OVER THEM. I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND A REP LOOKED AT THE TRUCK AND PRECEDED TO ACCUSE ME OF EXPOSING MY TRUCK TO A CHEMICAL AND SAYING HE HAD NEVER SEEN THIS HAPPEN BEFORE. THEY REFUSED TO MAKE IT RIGHT. I KNOW OF ANOTHER LADY WITH THE SAME YEAR TRUCK AND COLOR OF MINE WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM. I DID NOT BUY MY TRUCK NEW, BUT IT WAS ONLY 5 OR 6 YRS. OLD WHEN THIS PROBLEM BEGAN TO OCCUR. I AM THINKING THAT I CANNOT BE THE ONLY ONE OUT HERE WHO IS EXPERIENCING THIS. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP YOU CAN OFFER. *TR
SIGNIFICANT RUST ON MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THERE IS SIGNIFICANT RUST ON THE FRAME TO THE POINT THAT THERE IS A HOLE IN IT. THE CROSS MEMBER WAS NOT AFFECTED, BUT THE REST OF THE FRAME HAS BEEN. I HAVE EVEN HAD TO REPLACE THE EXHAUST BECAUSE IT WAS RUSTED OUT AND WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION. I HAVE FILED A COMPLAINT BEFORE ON THE SAME VEHICLE FOR THE SAME REASON. IT WAS FILED ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO, BUT I DO NOT KNOW THE DATE OR THE NUMBER THAT I WAS PROVIDED. *TR
SEVERE BRAKE VIBRATIONS ON 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA PICKUP. THIS IS THE SECOND SET OF BRAKES PADS AND ROTORS IVE PUT ON THIS TRUCK. INTERNET SEARCHES REVEAL THAT TOYOTA ISSUED A TSB ON THIS IN 2002. WHY ARENT CONSUMERS MADE AWARE OF THIS PRIOR TO THEIR WARRANTIES EXPIRING WHEN TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THE PROBLEM!!!!! *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS METAL TO METAL NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT BRAKES WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THIS OCCURRED AT 30 MPH DURING NORMAL BRAKING REGARDLESS OF THE ROADS CONDITIONS. THERE WERE NO MECHANICS CONSULTED.
FOUR FASTENERS THAT ATTACH THE LOWER CONTROL ARM/ BALL JOINT TO THE SPINDLE/ HUB ASSEMBLY FAILED ON THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE AND CAME APART PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT AFTER A 1.5 HOUR DRIVE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. RECALLS ON THE LOWER BALL JOINT ASSEMBLY IN 2002-2005 TUNDRAS SEEM TO RESULT IN THE SAME TYPE OF SEPARATION. *NM
I HAVE AN OXYGEN SENSOR FAILURE. DON'T KNOW IF IT'S ONE OR BOTH ON THE RIGHT SIDE. WILL COST WELL OVER $400 TO FIX. HAVE HEARD OF SEVERAL OTHER HAVING THE SAME ISSUE. *TR
I HAVE BROUGHT MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA UP FOR A BRAKE INSPECTION REPEATEDLY SINCE NOV 03 FOR VIBRATIONS WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. SINCE NOVEMBER 2003 IS WHEN ALL OF THIS VIBRATION STARTED. I HAD MY ROTORS TURNED IN NOV 03 AFTER 4,718 MILES FOR VIBRATION WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED, PADS REPLACED AND ROTORS TURNED AFTER I FELT VIBRATIONS WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED IN MAR 04 AFTER 5,345 MILES, JULY 04 3,961 MORE MILES I TURNED MY CAR IN ONCE AGAIN FOR VIBRATION WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED SERVICE MANAGER 1 TOLD ME MY FRONT BRAKE PADS WERE WORN AND ROTORS NEED TURNING. DEC 04 I BROUGHT MY TRUCK IN AGAIN AFTER 5,055 MORE MILES FOR VIBRATION WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE REAR BRAKE SHOES WERE REPLACED AND DRUMS TURNED. AFTER A FEW WEEKS THIS PROBLEM CAME BACK AGAIN AND EACH TIME IT COSTS ME HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AND I KEEP HAVING THE REPEAT PROBLEM. ON FEB 16 06 I CALLED TO SCHEDULE A CHECK OF MY BRAKES. I ASKED THE SERVICE MANAGER WHY DO I KEEP HAVING THIS VIBRATION SINCE I'VE OWNED THE CAR? SERVICE MANAGER 2 RESPONDED, " THERE WAS AN UPGRADE TO THE DEFECTIVE FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS IN SEPTEMBER 03, DO YOU HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY?" I TOLD HIM I DID HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY WHEN I BROUGHT MY VEHICLE IN REPEATEDLY AND YOUR COMPANY DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM, ONLY THE SYMPTOM. A SERVICE MANAGER SAID, "IT WOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED IF YOU HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY." I IMMEDIATELY ASKED TO SPEAK WITH THE STORE MANAGER AND HE JUST LEFT FOR THE DAY. I SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE HEAD MANAGER. THE HEAD MANAGER DENIED THE UPGRADE IN THE BEGINNING OF OUR CONVERSATION BUT LATER CHANGE HIS MIND AFTER SPEAKING WITH SERVICE MANAGER. MY BRAKING SYSTEM ON MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA IS LESS THAN ADEQUATE. MY FRONT END OF MY VEHICLE SHAKES VIOLENTLY WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED, MY EXTERIOR MIRRORS STEERING WHEEL, OCCUPANTS IN VEHICLE SHAKE AS WELL AS THE CONTENTS WHICH MAY BE ON THE SEATS. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO STOP AT SPEEDS OVER 50 MPH. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE COLUMN GEAR SHIFT WAS PLACED INTO PARK ATOP A HILL WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE ENGAGED AND THE ENGINE RUNNING, THE VEHICLE ROLLED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. AFTER INITIAL PARKING OF THE VEHICLE, THE CONTACT EXITED THE VEHICLE. WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REENTER THE VEHICLE AND STOP THE FORWARD MOTION INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE ROLLED DOWNHILL 60-70 YARDS AND TOTALED DUE TO THE EXTENSIVE DAMAGE. AFTER THE CRASH, THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND THE COLUMN GEAR SHIFT WAS IN PARK AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE WAS STILL ENGAGED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SEEN BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER OR REPAIR SHOP. MY 2000 TUNDRA HAS EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME AND ENTIRE UNDERCARRIAGE. THE TRUCK IS ONLY 8 YEARS OLD AND SHOULD NOT BE DOING THIS. THE SAME PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED WITH TACOMAS OF THE SAME MODEL YEAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CROSS MEMBER THAT HELD UP THE SPARE TIRE WAS CORRODED. AS A RESULT THE SPARE TIRE WAS NOT PROPERLY SECURED TO THE VEHICLE. HE CALLED THE DEALERSHIPS IN REFERENCE TO THE FAILURE, BUT WAS NOT ADVISED OF A REMEDY. HE HAD NOT SPOKEN WITH THE MANUFACTURER TO-DATE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 198,502. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 130,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA LIMITED. DURING STATE INSPECTION, HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR FRAME CROSS MEMBER WAS CORRODED. THE FRAMES HAD AN HOLE HIDDEN IN THE SPARE TIRE AREA. THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 95,000.

ON 9/17/05 I WAS INFORM BY TOYOTA DEALER THAT MY, 2000 TOYOTA MODEL TUNDRA, PICKUP HAD A MAJOR MODIFICATION TO THE BRAKE SYSTEM BY TOYOTA COMPANY . HOWERVER, SINCE THE TRUCK IS OUT WARRANTY, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR LABOR AND PARTS TO REPLACE THE UPGRADE PARTS. THE UPGRADE BRAKE PARTS CONSISTS OF THICKER ROTORS, LARGER CALIPERS AND WIDE BRAKE PADS. SINCE THESE UPGRADE INDICATES THAT CURRENT PART ARE INADEQUATE TO DO THE JOB OF STOPPING THIS VEHICLE UNDER ALL NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, I CALL THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER RELATION OFFICE AND THEY AGREED THE MY BRAKES HAD BEEN UPGRADED. THEY ALSO SAID, THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY , I WOULD PAY FOR THE LABOR COST ?AND $ 1600 FOR PARTS. BASED ON THIS INFORMATION, THIS IS NOT A QUESTION OF OUT WARRANTY, RATHER IT IS A QUESTION REGARDING AUTO SAFETY, AND THEREFORE I NEED YOUR HELP ASAP. FREQUENT BRAKE REPLACEMENT AND VIBRATION ON MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. *TR
THE BRAKING SYSTEM ON MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA, AS WELL AS THOSE OF NUMEROUS OTHER TUNDRA OWNERS, HAS AN INHERENT DESIGN FLAW THAT TOYOTA HAS CHOSEN TO IGNORE AND NOT INFORM US ABOUT. IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT BRAKES PULSATING AND FAILING TO STOP THE VEHICLE EFFECTIVELY, THE PROPORTIONING VALVE THAT TRANSFERS BRAKING FORCE TO THE REAR DRUM BRAKES DOESN'T SEEM TO WORK AT ALL. THERE IS A "LOAD SENSING DEVICE" THAT IS SUPPOSED TO INCREASE BRAKING FORCES TO THE REAR DRUMS WHEN THERE IS A LOAD IN THE TRUCK OR WHEN SOMETHING IS BEING TOWED BEHIND THE TRUCK. THIS DEVICE IS APPARENTLY NOT FUNCTIONING PROPERLY AS THE REAR PADS ON MY TRUCK DON'T APPEAR TO BE WORN MUCH AT ALL. THIS HAS CAUSED PROBLEMS AND ACCIDENTS FOR SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT OWN THIS VEHICLE AS EVIDENCED BY THE COMPLAINTS AT WWW.CONSUMERAFFAIRS.COM/AUTOMOTIVE/TOYOTA_TUNDRA_BRAKES.HTML. I HAD THE ACCELERATOR STICK WHILE PARALLEL PARKING MY 2000 TOYOTA TRUCK ABOUT 4 YEARS AGO. I TRIED TO BRAKE, THEN PUT THE VEHICLE IN REVERSE, ENDED UP DAMAGING BOTH THE VEHICLE IN FRONT AND BEHIND MY VEHICLE. AT THE TIME, I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT HAD OCCURRED. DT:THE CONTACT OWNED A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. EVER 15,000 MILE BRAKES HAD TO BE REPLACED, INCLUDING THE ROTORS TWICE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT VEHICLE VIBRATED. THE CONTACT WAS AFRAID THAT VEHICLE WILL HIT SOMEBODY BECAUSE OF BRAKE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER TOLD HIM THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING BECAUSE WARRANTY EXPIRED. THE CONTACT STATED HE DID NOT HAUL HEAVY LOADS WITH THIS VEHICLE, AND COULD NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THE BRAKES FAILED. HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED FIVE TIMES WITH ONLY 67,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. THE FIRST TIME CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO DEALER HE THOUGHT IT WAS THE TIRES. *AK *NM
PLEASE REFER TO TWO EARLIER COMPLAINTS, CONFORMATION # 10137322 & #10137322. THERE ARE TWO COMPLAINTS FILLED WITH YOUR OFFICE BECAUSE ONE HAD THE IN CORRECT BRAKE SYSTEM ( AIR BRAKES). THIS WAS CORRECTED IN THE SECOND FILLING TO READ HYDRAULIC FLUID BRAKE SYSTEM. THESE COMPLAINTS WHERE FILED ON 9/22/05 AND TO DATE I HAVE RECEIVED NO CONFORMATION THAT YOU HAVE THEM. I OWN A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA PICKUP AND HAVE HAD A VIBRATION IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. I HAVE HAD 4 REPAIRS ON THE BRAKES AT 6,139, 49,535, 58,302 AND 61,277 MILES. TOYOTA HAS PRODUCED SEVERAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON HOW TO REPAIR THE BRAKES (BR001-01, BR006-00, BR004-02) WERE ALL DONE ON THIS TRUCK. TOYOTA REFUSES TO INFORM CONSUMERS OR OFFER A RECALL ON THIS COMMON PROBLEM. I AM OUT $1255 IN REPAIRS AND TOYOTAS LAST RESPONSE TO ME WAS : "TOYOTA'S FINAL STAND IS TO NOT OFFER FURTHER ASSISTANCE ON THIS MATTER." *NM
WAS DRIVING ON I-10 IN TEXAS IN OUR 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA TRUCK ON 7/9/2005. THE RAIN WAS ON AND OFF. I WAS DRIVING UNDER THE SPEED LIMIT DUE TO THE VISIBILITY. THE TRUCK SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND WENT OFF THE ROAD, OVERTURNED. MY WIFE WAS SITTING IN THE BACK. SHE WAS EJECTED AND KILLED. IT WAS SO SUDDEN AND I DID NOT KNOW WHAT TO THINK. I THOUGHT IT COULD BE THE SLIPPERY CONDITION OF THE ROAD CAUSING THE TRUCK TO GO FASTER. IS THERE ANY SIMILAR REPORT REGARDING THE 2000 TUNDRA? AFTER NOTICING MANY COMPLAINTS OF OTHER TUNDRA OWNERS ON THE INTERNET AND FINDING OUT THAT TOYOTA HAS RELEASED A TSB TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM (BUT WILL ONLY FIX AT THEIR COST IF THE TRUCK IS UNDER 36,000 MILE WARRANTY), I DECIDED TO SEND IN THIS COMPLAINT. MY TRUCK LIKE MANY OTHER PEOPLE WILL EXPERIENCE SEVERE SHAKING WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. AFTER THEY FIX THE BRAKES FOR ABOUT $450 A SHOT THE PROBLEM IS TEMPORARILY CORRECTED UNTIL A FEW THOUSAND MILES AND THE PULSATING RETURNS. THE DEALERSHIP REALIZES IT'S A PROBLEM, BUT TO APPLY THE CORRECT FIX, IT'S ANOTHER $2000. FOR $450 YOU CAN FIX THE PROBLEM AGAIN, TEMPORARILY. THEY SAY THE PROBLEM IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT IT'S COMMON SENSE THAT IF YOUR BRAKES ARE NOT GRIPPING PROPERLY, IT WILL BE A SAFETY CONCERN. WHY DOES SOMEONE HAVE TO BE KILLED OR INJURED TO GET SOMEONE TO TAKE ACTION FOR TOYOTA TO STAND BEHIND THIS PROBLEM? MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA SR5 WAS PURCHASED IN AUG 2000. IN JUNE 2005, THE DEALER NOTICED EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME AND OTHER PARTS OF THE UNDERBODY. MY CAR IS ONLY USED A FEW TIMES PER MONTH ON THE WEEKEND AND ONLY HAS 16,000 MILES. THE BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED IN 2006, THE DEALER NOTED EXCESSIVE RUST AGAIN ON THE CALIPERS. *TR THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THE RUST CONDITION WAS DUE TO IMPROPER METAL PREPARATION DURING FACTORY BUILD. THE SHIFT LEVER BROKE OFF, DISCONNECTED FROM THE STEERING COLUMN AT ABOUT 21000 MILES. AFTER I PARKED THE TRUCK, I WAS NOT ABLE TO SHIFT IT TO REVERSE OR ANY OTHER GEAR. I HAD THE VEHICULE TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE SHIFT LEVER, TUBE STEERING, SUPPORT TILT MECHANISM, AND SHAFT CONTROL. (COVERED UNDER WARRANTY) AT 44, 000 MILES. THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED. I TALKED TO THE DEALER AND TO A TOYOTA CORPORATE REPRESENTATIVE, THEY STATED SINCE MY VEHICULE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME. I FEEL TOYOTA SHOULD COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIR SINCE THIS IS A RECCURING PROBLEM THAT IS PART OF THE DRIVE TRAIN. THE SHIFT LEVER IS A PART THAT SHOULD LAST THE LIVE CYCLE OF THE VEHICULE. THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE DEFFECT ; THEY SHOULD BEAR THE COST. *AK
"TICKING" SOUND FROM LEFT REAR OF ENGINE BLOCK. I KNOW IT WAS AN EXHAUST LEAK. WENT TO TOYOTA DEALER AND THEY SAID MY EXHAUST HEADER WAS CRACKED AND RUSTED. THE TRUCK WAS BOUGHT NEW IN TEXAS. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE MANAGER NAMED GABE AT CAMELBACK TOYOTA IN PHOENIX, AZ, "THE HUMIDITY IN DALLAS MUST HAVE CAUSED THE RUSTING." THE TRUCK HAS 79,000 MILES ON IT WITH NO RUST ANYWHERE ELSE ON THE VEHICLE. WHEN I INQUIRED TO THE PRICE OF REPAIRS, HE SAID $1800. HOWEVER, HE ADDED, I COULD GET THE "IMPROVED" MANIFOLD, "WHICH HAS THICKER WELDS, FOR ONLY TEN DOLLARS MORE." THIS SEEMED EVERY ODD TO ME THAT TOYOTA ALREADY HAS AN IMPROVED DESIGN FOR THE HEADER THAT RUSTS FROM THE "HIGH HUMIDITY" OF TEXAS. *JB

I OWN A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA 4X4 TRUCK. THERE IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE WITH THE FRAME ON THIS VEHICLE. THE FRAME HAS RUSTED TO THE POINT OF HAVING HOLES. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, AS FRAME FAILURE MAY OCCUR AND CAUSE INJURY OR LOSS OF LIFE. A LOUD NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE, AND THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER. THE TRUCK COLLAPSED TO THE GROUND. THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF THE TRUCK, AND OBSERVED THAT DRIVER'S FRONT WHEEL SHEARED OFF. AT 34,000 MILES PRIOR TO WARRANTY EXPIRING THEY SUGGESTED SAME - TURNED ROTORS, AND THEY INDICATED THIS WAS A NORMAL PROBLEM. YOU JUST HAVE TO TURN THE ROTORS. NOW, THEY ADMIT THERE WAS A PROBLEM, AND A SERVICE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED. BUT SINCE THE TRUCK IS OUT OF WARRANTY THEY COULD NOT HELP, AND WILL NOT WORK OUT A CONCESSION WITH TOYOTA.*AK

I PURCHASED MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA LIMITED 4WD IN SEPT. OF 2000 WITH 5,500 MILES ON IT. AT APPROX. 10,000 MI. I EXPERIENCED SEVERE VIBRATION OF THE FRONT END WHEN BRAKING. THE DEALER TURNED THE FRONT ROTORS AND REPLACED THE PADS. THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN AT 15,000 MI. THIS TIME THE DEALER REPAIRED THE FRONT AND REAR BRAKES ACCORDING TO A TSB THAT HAD BEEN ISSUED. I THOUGHT MY PROBLEMS WERE OVER BUT IN JAN.'05 I NEARLY HAD AN ACCIDENT ON THE FREEWAY THAT HAD IT OCCURRED WOULD SURELY HAVE RESULTED IN LOSS OF LIFE OR LIVES. I WAS TRAVELING AT 70 MPH, ALLOWING PROPER STOPPING DISTANCE WHEN ANOTHER VEHICLE CUT IN FRONT OF ME AND THEN SLAMMED ON THEIR BRAKES. IN TURN I WAS FORCED TO BRAKE WITH FULL FORCE. UPON DOING SO, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKES TOOK OVER AND IT TOOK ALL THE STRENGTH I HAD JUST TO MAINTAIN CONTROL BECAUSE OF THE VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE ENTIRE TRUCK. AFTER THIS NEAR ACCIDENT MY TRUCK HAS THE VIBRATION PROBLEM DURING BRAKING AGAIN. I NOW HAVE 43,000 MI. ON MY TRUCK AND BEING OUT OF WARRANTY THE DEALER SAYS IT WILL COST ME $1700+ TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. WHAT A POOR ENGINEERING DESIGN TOYOTA HAS IN THE TUNDRA WHEN A $30,000 TRUCK HAS REPEATED BRAKE PROBLEM WHILE IN WARRANTY AND NOW, AFTER THE WARRANTY HAS EXPIRED, APPLYING THE BRAKES HARD 1 TIME RESULTS IN MY HAVING TO SPEND NEARLY 1/15TH OF THE TOTAL COST OF THE VEHICLE TO REPAIR A PROBLEM TOYOTA HAS KNOWN EXIST IN THE TUNDRA. I FEEL VERY STRONGLY THAT TOYOTA SHOULD BE FORCED THROUGH A RECALL TO REMEDY THIS DESIGN FLAW. *JB
CHRONIC REAR AXLE SEAL LEAKAGE (LEAKS GEAR LUBE). DEALER HAS ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR MY PROBLEM 3 TIMES SINCE 2005. DEALER CANNOT REPAIR PROBLEM. THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH TOYOTA TRUCKS AND SUVS USING A SIMILAR REAR AXLE DESIGN. IT IS A FIRE HAZARD SINCE GEAR LUBE LEAKS ONTO HOT EXHAUST PIPING. IT IS A BRAKING HAZARD SINCE GEAR LUBE CONTAMINATES REAR BRAKES AND REDUCES BRAKING POWER. SEALS BEGIN TO LEAK EARLY IN LIFE OF VEHICLE BUT ARE NOT DEALT WITH UNTIL LEAK IS NOTED (AFTER SEALS HAVE BEEN LEAKING FOR SOME TIME) AND PROBLEM IS SEVERE. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE ENTIRE FRAME WAS CORRODED. THE MANUFACTURER TOOK REPORT NUMBER 0910139204. THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT CONFIRMED IF THEY WILL ASSIST WITH THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 40,000.

I PULLED OUT OF MY DRIVEWAY AND HEARD A THUMP, STOPPED, GOT OUT OF MY TRUCK,AND CHECKED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED. I FOUND THE TOP PORTION OF MY FRONT SWAY BAR (LINKAGE) IN THE ROAD. IT HAD RUSTED AWAY BETWEEN THE TWO RUBBER BUSHINGS, (ON THE PASSENGER SIDE). IF I HAD BEEN DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD, I WOULD NEVER HAVE NOTICED THIS HAD HAPPENED...
