TOYOTA BRAKE SAFETY FOR 2000 TUNDRA, FRONT AND REAR VIBRATION. *BF TOYOTA ISSUED TSB BR 004R-02 AND TSB BR003-02 FOR FRONT AND REAR BRAKE VIBRATIONS, HOWEVER, THEY HAVE NOT RECALLED THESE VEHICLES. THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THE VIBRATION IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY PROBLEM. *TC *NM

VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING AN EXHAUST MANIFOLD LEAK. CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO THE DEALER, WHERE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE CRACKS IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. *AK
NO PARTS WERE AVAILABLE FOR RECALL 01E041000 CONCERNING WIRING HARNESS CONVERTER. BERTALLEN TOYOTA 228-864-6622. *AK
2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA LIMITED: I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE WHEN IT ONLY HAD 34,000 MILES ON IT. I NOW HAVE 98,000 MILES ON MY TRUCK AND I HAVE ALWAYS HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS, SHAKING, PULSATING. I HAVE REPLACED MY ROTORS BEFORE AND SHORTLY AFTER THE SAME PROBLEM WAS BACK IN NO TIME. I AM WONDERING IF THERE IS A RECALL ON THE BRAKES FOR THIS PARTICULAR MODEL. IF NOT THERE SHOULD BE. I HAVE BEEN ON NUMEROUS DISCUSSION BOARDS AND PEOPLE STILL WITH FACTORY WARRANTIES AND ALL OR BARELY OVER HAVE HAD THERE BRAKES OVERHAULED AT NO CHARGE. *TR
BOUGHT TRUCK IN MAY AT 59,000 MILES. SERVICE ON BRAKES AND ROTORS DONE AT 55,000. TRUCK NOW HAS 68,000 MILES ON IT. SEVERE VIBRATION WHEN BRAKING. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP ROTORS SEVERLY WARPED. $534.41 TO REPAIR. 9,000 MILES IS NOT MANY MILES FOR ROTORS TO WARP!*AK
WHILE BRAKING THE VEHICLE VIBRATED. *NM THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A FACTORY DEFECT ON THE FRONT ROTORS AND CALIPERS. *SC *JB
DT: THE CONTACT STATED NHTSA RECALL 02V050000 CONCERNING THE TRAILER HITCH WAS ISSUED. THIS VEHICLE MANIFESTED THE SAME PROBLEM AS INDICATED IN THE RECALL, BUT THE DEALER REFUSED TO MAKE REPAIRS BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY IN A WRECK. THE CONTACT DID NOT UNDERSTAND THIS EXCLUSION BECAUSE THE VEHICLE ONLY SUSTAINED DAMAGE TO THE FRONT END. IT WAS WRECKED BY THE PREVIOUS OWNER AND SOLD TO THE CONTACT BEFORE ANY REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE DEALER WHO REFUSED TO SERVICE THE RECALL WAS THE SAME DEALER WHO SOLD THE VEHICLE TO THE CONTACT AFTER THE ACCIDENT.*AK
I HAVE MAJOR VIBRATION WHEN APPLYING MY BRAKES ON THE 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. I HAVE HAD 2 BRAKE JOBS DONE, RESURFACING ROTORS, NEW PADS. THE PROBLEM REAPEARED AFTER ABOUT 2 WEEKS. WENT BACK TO BRAKE SHOP AND THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO OTHER THAN TO CONTINUE TO RESURFACE OR REPLACE ROTORS, CALIPERS, AND PADS. THEY ALSO INFROMED ME THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETINS BUT, UNLESS YOU ARE WITHIN THE MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY, THE DEALER WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. IF TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGES A DEFECT IN PARTS/DESIGN, HOW COME THEY ARE NOT BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE REPAIRS ON VEHICLES THAT WERE MANUFACTURED PRIOR TO THE BULLETIN RELEASES? THE BRAKE ON MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA SHAKE VIOLENTLY WHEN APPLIED. THE REAR DRUMS WERE REPLACED ALONG WITH NEW SHOES AND THE FRONT ROTORS WERE TURNED WITH NEW PADS AT 26,894 MILES UNDER WARRANTY AND AT 60,000 I HAVE HAD TO HAVE BOTH REWORKED AGAIN. YOUR ORGANIZATION SHOULD DEMAND A RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM.*AK
BOUGHT A 2000 TUNDRA WITH 49000 MILES ON IT AND INTENDED TO USE IT AS A WORK TRUCK. THE SECOND DAY I HAD THE TRUCK IT STARTED TO VIBRATE WHEN STOPPING AT ABOVE 50 MILES PER HOUR. THE NEXT DAY I HAD ABOUT 900 POUNDS OF PRINTING INK IN THE BACK AND HAD TO MAKE A FAIRLY QUICK STOP ON THE FREEWAY. EVEN THOUGH I HAD GIVEN MYSELF PLENTY OF ROOM, I WAS BARELY ABLE TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT DUE TO THE SEVERE VIBRATION IN THE STEERING WHEEL,IT REALLY SHOOK ME UP.I WENT TO TOYOTA AND THEY REFUSE TO DO A THING CAUSE THE WARRANTY IS UP AND I AM NOT THE ORIGENAL OWNER. MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS DEVELOPED A CRACK IN THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL DEFECT SO I DID SOME RESEARCH. APPARENTLY, THERE IS A TSB FOR THE O2 SENSORS AND THEN SOMETIMES IN CHANGING THESE THE DEALERSHIP ALSO HAS TO REPLACE THE MANIFOLD BECAUSE THE THREADS STRIP. MAYBE TOYOTA IS JUST TRYING TO HIDE THE PROBLEM WITH THE MANIFOLD. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH TUNDRA'S AND I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD ALSO BE A TSB ON THE MANIFOLD. THIS TYPE OF DEFECT IS NOT NORMAL ON VEHICLES OF ANY AGE AND IT IS VERY WIDESPREAD AMONG THE TUNDRAS. *NM
BRAKE ROTORS WARP AND CAUSE SEVERE VIBRATIONS. SEEMS THEY WERE NOT DESIGNED FOR A TRUCK THIS HEAVY.*AK
POWER WINDOW ON DRIVER'S DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES INTERMITTENTLY. DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE CONTACTED, AND NEITHER WAS WILLING TO ASSIST THE CONSUMER UNLESS HE PAID OUT OF POCKET. HOWEVER, WARRANTY EXPIRED. *AK THE POWER WINDOW FAILS TO OPEN. SOMETIMES SLAMMING THE DOOR HELPS TO UNSTICK THE WINDOW. *TS
IT WAS DETERMINED THAT ALL 4 OXYGEN SENSORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONSUMER FOUND THAT THERE WAS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY, BUT WAS TOLD THAT THE PROBLEM WASN'T BAD ENOUGH FOR A TOTAL RECALL. *SC RECALL CAMPAIGN: RECALL NUMBER: 99V347003. THE TOWING PACKET LIGHT KIT HAD BLOWN OUT AND WAS REPLACED. THE CONSUMER STATED THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE PURCHASE OF THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE STALLED WHILE BEING DRIVEN BY THE CONSUMER. WHEN STARTED AGAIN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARED. AFTER HAVING THE VEHICLE CHECKED AGAIN IT REGISTERED A CODE OF P0505/POSSIBLE IDLE CONTROL SYSTEM. *TC
I WAS DRIVING 35 MPH DOWN A SMOOTH STREET IN AUSTIN, TX. IN MY 2000 TUNDRA PICKUP TRUCK. THE ENTIRE RIGHT WHEEL ASSEMBLY FELL OFF CAUSING $3000 DAMAGE TO MY TRUCK. THE DAY PRIOR, I WAS DRIVING IN THE COUNTRY AT 70 MPH, WITHIN THE SPEED LIMIT. I HAD 1000 LBS. OF GRAIN IN MY TRUCK. IF THE WHEEL HAD COME OFF THAT DAY, I WOULD LIKELY HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED. I CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD: "YOU ARE OUT OF WARRANTY AND THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO." THE TRUCK HAD 56 000 MI. ON IT AND WAS TRULY OUT OF WARRANTY. THIS EVENT WAS SO SIGNIFICANT, I FELT THAT SOME ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND REMEDY SHOULD HAVE BEEN OFFERED. IF THERE ARE OTHER TUNDRAS OUT THERE, 1999 ONWARD, THIS REPRESENTS A VERY BIG POTENTIAL HAZARD. I GOT NO RESPONSE FROM THE DEALER EITHER. WHEN I SUGGESTED TO THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER "SERVICE" REPRESENTATIVE THAT I COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED BY THIS, SHE SIMPLY SAID" "IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY". I SUGGESTED THAT TOYOTA DID NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS AND WAS TOLD "IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY". I SUSPECT THAT THERE ARE OTHER TUNDRAS WHOSE WHEELS HAVE FALLEN OFF. APPARENTLY THE PROBLEM IS AN "L BRACKET" THAT WAS MADE OF TWO PIECES OF STEEL, INSTEAD OF PRODUCED AS ONE SINGLE PIECE. *TR
3 PAIRS OF CRACKED EXHAUST MANIFOLDS IN LESS THAN 100K MILES. HAD I BEEN MORE VIGILANT ABOUT REPAIRING THEM AS SOON AS THEY OCCURRED, IT LIKELY WOULD HAVE BEEN ANOTHER COUPLE OF PAIRS. DEALER REPLACED THEM UP TO 100K, AND ALTHOUGH I PRESSED THEM FOR A SOLUTION, THEY WOULD NOT HONOR PROBLEM AFTER 100K MILES. *TR
WHILE WASHING THE VEHICLE PASSENGER DOOR MOLD FELL OFF BECAUSE THE CLIP HOLDING THE MOLD RUSTED. CONSUMER WAS CONCERNED WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF THIS VEHICLE WILL BE IN MOTION AND HIT ANOTHER CAR WHILE DRIVING. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED. *AK
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. IN JUNE OF 2004, HE NOTICED CORROSION BUBBLING UNDER THE PAINT ON THE FRAME; THERE WERE QUARTER INCH LUMPS ON THE PAINT. HIS MECHANIC SPECULATED THAT THE CORROSION WAS PREMATURE FOR THE VEHICLE'S AGE IN 2004. HE THEN RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLE BE OILED. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN OILED SINCE 2005. DURING THE LAST OILING HE WAS ADVISED THAT THE CROSS BRACE THAT HOLDS THE SPARE TIRE HAD CORROSION , AND THE SPARE TIRE WAS MISSING. THE MANUFACTURER NOR THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 154,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000. CONSUMER IS ADDING PICTURES. 10/26/09. *NJ UPDATED 10/26/09 *BF THE CONSUMER SENT IN PICTURES OF THE FRAME. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPAIRED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO. RECENTLY HE NOTICED THE BRAKE LIGHT WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENTAL CONTROL PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER AND THE FRAME ALONG WITH THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED BECAUSE OF CORROSION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74000. FRONT BRAKE ROTORS ARE SEVERELY WARPED AFTER JUST MODERATE USE. THIS CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO VIBRATE VIOLENTLY WHEN STOPPING. WHEN SLOWING FROM HIGH SPEEDS, THIS LEADS TO LOSS OF CONTROL OF VEHICLE. NEW CALIPERS, BRAKE PADS, ROTORS, AND PROBABLY BEARIGS WILL BE REQUIRED TO REPAIR.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE VIBRATED WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. DEALER WAS NOTIFIED, AND FLOOR MANAGER ADMITTED THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE, ALSO, INDICATED THERE WAS A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ON THIS PROBLEM. *AK
I OWN A TOYOTA TUNDRA, 2000, V8, EXTENDED CAB. ONE RECURRING PROBLEM IS THE POOR PERFORMANCE OF THE FRONT BRAKE SYSTEM. I HAVE 72K MILES ON THE TRUCK AND HAVE REPLACED THE BRAKES, AND HAD THE ROTORS TURNED 3 TIMES, AVERAGE EVERY 20K MILES. DEALER CLAIMS THIS IS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE AND DEALER CLAIMS NO EVIDENCE OF A DESIGN PROBLEM. I HAVE VIEWED HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS. SECOND ISSUE, RECENT EVENT. AFTER A 4 HOUR DRIVE THE TRUCK SHUT DOWN. RESTARTED TRUCK IN PARK AND HAS A ROUGH IDLE. AS SOON AS THE TRUCK IS IN GEAR, TRUCK SHUTS OFF. REQUIRED TOWING. AFTER SITTING FOR 24HOURS, TRUCK OPERATES FINE. SEVERAL MECHANICS CLAIM TORQUE CONVERTER PROBLEM. TOYOTA DEAL WILL NOT FIX ANYTHING SINCE TRUCK HAS RETURNED TO NORMAL OPERATION. IN ADDITION, INTERMITTENT SLIPPAGE OF TRANSMISSION DURING ACCELERATION BETWEEN 30 AND 40MPH. AGAIN, DEALER CLAIMS NOTHING CAN BE DONE SINCE DEALER CANNOT CONFIRM PROBLEMS. THIS AGAIN INDICATES A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. DEALER IS TEAM TOYOTA IN LANGHORNE, PA
BRAKE ROTORS HAVE NEEDED REPLACING SEVERAL TIMES SINCE NEW BECAUSE THEY WARP. POOR DESIGN FLAW. O2 SENSOR REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY AT CLOSE TO 58K MILES, THEN 2 MORE O2 SENSORS WENT OUT @ 103K MILES. VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPLACE... COST ME $435. *AK I HAVE COMPLAINED TO 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS THAT MY FRONT LEFT WHEEL MAY HAVE A BAD WHEEL BEARING, BUT THEY SAY THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. ALL I KNOW IS IT CONSTANTLY SQUEAKS AND IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BRAKES BECAUSE THE NOISE DOES NOT CHANGE WHEN YOU APPLY THE BRAKES OR DRIVE ALONG DOWN THE ROAD AT SLOW OR HIGHWAY SPEEDS.
68800 MI. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON. DEALER SAID EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND GASKET WERE LEAKING. IT AND BOTH O2 SENSORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ONE O2 SENSOR HAD BEEN REPLACED LESS THAN 12 MONTHS BEFORE - NOW BOTH!. TECHNICIAN SAID THEY'D FIXED 5 OR 6 EXACT SAME PROBLEMS WITHIN THE LAST MONTH - AT ONE DEALERSHIP!. ANOTHER WEB SITE INDICATES OTHERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I SMELL MFGR DEFECT THAT SHOULD BE COVERED 100% AS IT'S EMISSIONS ORIENTED AND BECAUSE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE WIDE SPREAD. IT'S POSSIBLE TO DESIGN AND BUILD A MANIFOLD THAT DOESN'T LEAK OR WARP. TOYOTA SHOULD OWN UP AND FIX AT THEIR EXPENSE. UNCONSCIONABLE IF THEY DON'T, AND NEED NHTSA TO MAKE THEM. *JB
GAS TANK ON 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA ACCESS CAB - LIMITED DEVELOPED A RUST SPOT AND WAS LEAKING GASOLINE. THE TANK HAD TO BE REPLACED.*AK
SEVERELY RUSTED FRAME. TOYOTA & NHTSA KNOWS THERE IS A PROBLEM BECAUSE THE FRAMES WERE NOT TREATED CORRECTLY IN THE FACTORIES. I HAVE BEEN CONTACTING TOYOTA ABOUT THIS ISSUE FOR YEARS & HAVE GOTTEN NO WHERE. MY FRAME STARTING RUSTING & FLAKING METAL AROUND 4-5 YEARS OF AGE. FRAMES SHOULD NOT RUST LIKE THIS. I'VE TRIED UNDERCOATING THE FRAME TO PREVENT ANY FURTHER RUST BUT NOTHING HELPS IT JUST GETS WORSE & WORSE. MY BRACKETS HOLDING THE FRONT BUMPER ARE SO ROTTED I'M JUST WAITING FOR THE BUMPER TO FALL OFF. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE FOR THE TUNDRA OWNERS W/ THIS SEVERE PROBLEM. SHAKING WHILE BRAKING THAT DOESN'T GO AWAY AFTER CONTINUOUS BRAKE WORK
THE DEALER REPLACED THE DISC AND PADS AND 22,000 MILES. AT 32,000 MILES THE ROTORS, DISC AND PADS WERE REPLACED BY THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN. THE CONSUMER WILL SEND A LETTER PROVIDING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS MATTER. *JB THE PROBLEM RECURRED AT 70000, THE DEALER ADMITTED THAT THE BRAKES WERE NOT DESIGNED PROPERLY. *NM
THE REAR QUARTER PANEL LATCHES CRACK VERY EASILY. I HAVE PERSONALLY TALKED TO OVER 6 PEOPLE WHO HAVE DIFFERENT YEAR TUNDRAS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. TOYOTA KNOWS ABOUT THIS. THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN ON IT. WITH SO MANY YEARS INVOLVED, IT SHOULD BE RECALLED!!! AT LEAST OFFER FREE NEW LATCHES!*AK
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA SR5 ACCESS CAB 4X4 WITH 34,700 MILES ON IT. AT APPROXIMATELY 30,000 MILES, I BEGAN NOTICING MODERATE PULSATION/VIBRATION WHEN APPLYING BRAKES, ESPECIALLY FROM SPEEDS OVER 50 MPH. AT 34,000 MILES, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MIDAS SHOP IN PHOENIX, AZ, WHO TOLD ME I HAD 60%+ WEAR LEFT ON MY BRAKES BEFORE THEY NEEDED REPLACING, BUT SUGGESTED THAT MACHINING THE BRAKE ROTORS WOULD ELIMINATE SAID VIBRATION. THIS WAS DONE, BUT TWO WEEKS LATER THE VIBRATION RETURNED. AS THIS SEEMED VERY UNUSUAL TO ME, I BEGAN INVESTIGATING AND FOUND THAT THERE SEEM TO BE THOUSANDS OF COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER TUNDRA OWNERS DESCRIBING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM I AM EXPERIENCING. ALSO DISCOVERED WAS THE FACT THAT TOYOTA HAS ISSUED NUMEROUS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS ON THIS PROBLEM WHICH INDIRECTLY INDICATE THAT IT PRODUCED THE VEHICLE WITH BRAKES THAT WERE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO HOLD UP TO THE HEAT GENERATED ON THIS VEHICLE. SOME CUSTOMERS ARE HAVING THEIR BRAKE COMPONENTS REPLACED WITH BETTER ONES AT NO CHARGE. COMPARATIVELY, TOYOTA SERVICE DEPARTMENTS IN MY AREA HAVE BEEN VERY UNCOOPERATIVE. AT BEST, THEY ARE REPLACING SOME PARTS, BUT REQUIRE THAT I PAY THE LABOR. I BELIEVE THIS IS A FUNDAMENTAL DESIGN FLAW AS OPPOSED TO A MINOR INCONVENIENCE, AS BRAKES THAT DO NOT HOLD UP UNDER NORMAL WEAR POSE A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN. ALSO, CONSUMERS SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE MANUFACTURERS' HAZARDOUS DESIGN DEFECTS FIXED, REGARDLESS OF WARRANTY PERIOD. *JB
THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE SHIMMIED WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. NO GRINDING NOISE WAS HEARD. THE MANUFACTURER HAS A TSB FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY REFUSE TO FIX THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE BECAUSE IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY. *MR *NM
2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA BRAKES SHAKE VIOLENTLY. DEALER ADMITS THERE IS A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM, BUT WILL DO NOTHING TO FIX IT. FIX FOR ME TO TAKE CARE OF IT IS AROUND 2000.00 AFTER LOOKING ONLINE, I HAVE FOUND SEVERAL HUNDRED IDENTICAL ISSUES.
(1)LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE AT FRONT LEFT. BALL JOINT ANALYSIS INDICATES METALLURGICAL INCOMPATABILITY OF BALL AND CUP. NO WARNING PRIOR TO FAILURE RESULTING TO ON ROAD ACCIDENT. I OWN A 2000 TUNDRA WITH SEVERE BRAKE PROBLEMS. I BOUGHT MY TUNDRA USED WITH 38,000 MILES FROM THE DEALER. SINCE I'VE HAD IT I PUT 67,000 MILES ON IT, AND 2 SET OF ROTARS, AND HAVE TO RESUREFACE THEM EVER 5,000 TO 10,000 MILES. I BELIEVE TOYOTA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE COST OF THE UPGRADE WHICH IS $1,700.00, ALSO REIMBURSEMENT OF ALL COST ASSOCIATED WITH BRAKE PROBLEMS. THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM I DON'T KNOW WHY THERE IS NO RECALL. IT IS PATHETIC TO THINK THAT SOMEONE WILL HAVE TO DIE BEFORE THE GOVERMENT OR TOYOTA RECALLS ALL TUNDRA'S WITH BAD BRAKES. *AK
THE HEADERS NEAR THE ENGINE HAVE LITTLE HOLES IN THEM ALLOWING THERE TO BE AN EXHAUST LEAK AND A LOUD NOISE. *NM
WHILE DRIVING CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES AND A LOUD KNOCKING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL. CONSUMER DROVE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT CALIPERS AND ABS BRAKES WERE NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THIS VEHICLE. MECHANIC REPLACED THE CALIPERS AND ABS BRAKES. *AK
I HAVE BEEN INFORMED BY MY TOYOTA REPAIR FACILITY THAT MY 2000 TUNDRA IS IN NEED OF NEW EXHAUST MANIFOLDS. THE TRUCK CURRENTLY HAS 54,000 MILES ON IT. THE REPAIR WILL COST $1900.00 IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE MANIFOLDS ON THESE TRUCKS ARE FAILING AT A GREATER RATE THAN TOYOTA WILL ADMIT TO. A VEHICLE WITH 54,000 MILES SHOULD NOT NEED THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS REPLACED. TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM, AND CORRECT THE FAULTY PARTS, WITHOUT CHARGE TO THE CUSTOMER.*AK
PURCHASED 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA IN 2004 WITH ABS LIGHT ON AND REAR END NOISE. TRUCK VIBRATES SIGNIFICANTLY WHEN BREAK IS USED DOWN HILL. TOYOTA AGREED TO INSPECT AND REPAIR IF ANY PROBLEM EXISTED. TOYOTA STATES THAT THE NOISE WAS A PARKING BRAKE CABLE AND THE BREAKS SHOULD BE USED "SMOOTHLY", TAKING CARE NOT TO HIT IT TOO HARD. THE DAY AFTER PICK UP FROM SERVICE DEPARTMENT A MAJOR ACCIDENT OCCURED WHEN AT 45 MPH THE BRAKES LOCKED UP CAUSING VEHICLE TO SLIDE 75 FEET IMPACTING TWO OTHER VEHICLES THAT WERE TOTALED OUT. THE TUNDRA REAR-ENDED A SMALL CAR. DAMMAGE WAS TO THE UPPER LEFT SIDE OF THE TUNDRA AND ALL THE WAY TO THE MIDDLE OF THE ENGINE AREA, AS THE TOP OF THE TUNDRA WAS FORCED INTO A DOWNWARD POSITION BY THE LEFT FRONT TIRE LOCKING UP. NO AIR BAG DEPLOYED. NOT THE DRIVER OR PASSENGER SIDE. 3 MINOR INJURIES TO 3 PEOPLE INSIDE TUNDRA. NECK INJURY TO DRIVER OF FIRST VEHICLE IMPACTED. TOYOTA VERBALLY STATED TO FAMILY MEMBER THAT THEY KNEW IT WAS A PROBLEM. BODY WORK FINNISHED AND INSURANCE PAID BILL. BREAKS STILL LOCK UP EVEN AT LOW SPEEDS. USING BREAKS ON A HILL CAUSE TRUCK TO SHAKE. BREAK PADS REPLACED AND BREAKS STILL DO NOT FUNCTION AS REQUIRED. TOYOTA DENIES ANY PROBLEM WITH BREAKS.
2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA SR5 4WD REPEATED FAILURES OF O2 SENSORS, HAVE TWO SENSORS FAIL WITHIN 30,000 MILES TOTAL ON THE TRUCK. EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. ON JAN 13 2004, TOYOTA REPAIR STATED IT COULD COST $800 TO REPAIR O2 SENSOR IN EXHAUST MANIFOLD BECAUSE "AROUND HALF" OF THEM WON'T COME OUT AND THE ENTIRE MANIFOLD MUST BE REPLACED. I KNOW TWO PEOPLE PERSONALLY WITH THE SAME EXACT FAILURES ON THIS YEAR TRUCK.
TRUCK LURCHES AT TIMES WHEN STOPPING, DOWNSHIFTS ARE SOMETIMES HARD. I'VE HAD SEVERAL DEALERS LOOK AT IT, AND THEY HAVE SAID IT'S "FINE". THERE IS NO TRANSMITTION FILTER (STANDARD) SO I PAYED TO HAVE IT FLUSHED. IT WORKED GREAT FOR A COUPLE DAYS. I THINK THIS HAS TO DO WITH THE DRIVE SHAFT, AND THE REQUIREMENT FOR RE-TORQUING THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE DONE TO IT ACCORDING TO THE USER MANUAL. I HAVE KEPT UP THE MAINTENANCE ON IT, BUT I THINK ITS SOME FLAW IN THE LINKAGE OR A CONTROL PROBLEM. TIRES ARE NOW NEW, BUT HAS HAD NO EFFECT. BASICALLY, IT SOMETIMES SHIFTS/JERKS LIKE IT HAS A BELT DRIVE, NOT A GEARED ONE.*AK
IN SEPT OF 2003, I HAD TO HAVE ONE OF MY 02 SENSORS REPLACED ON MY 2000 TUNDRA WITH 42,000 MILES ON IT. LESS THEN FOUR MONTHS LATER I AM HAVING ANOTHER 02 SENSOR REPLACED AT 48,000 MILES. ONE OF MY CO-WORKERS HAS A 2000 TUNDRA ALSO AND HAS TWO 02 SENSORS REPLACED. I FEEL THAT IT IS MORE THAN APPARENT THAT THERE IS A QUALITY ISSUE WITH THESE SENSORS AND TOYOTA SHOULD RE-CALL AND REPLACE THE LOT OF THEM. *AK

ON AN EXTREMELY COLD MORNING (-22DEG F) I STARTED MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA ACCESS CAB V8 AND WENT TO TURN ON HEAT. THE TEMPERATURE NOB WOULD NOT TURN EASILY, BUT DID TURN, AND MADE A SNAPPING SOUND. THE HEAT NEVER CAME, THOUGH THE FAN DID WORK AND BLEW COLD AIR. I HAVE BEEN WORKING OVERSEAS AND NOT REQUIRING THE USE OF THE VEHICLE SINCE THIS INCIDENT, AND JUST FOUND THE CAUSE OF THE ERROR. THE CABLES FOR THE HEAT SELECTOR SEIZED AND THE DASH MECHANISM BROKE. AFTER READING MANY OTHER POSTS ON THIS MODEL, AND OTHER TOYOTA MODELS, THEY NEED TO REDESIGN THE CABLE, THE HEAT VALVE, THE METHOD THE CABLE IS SECURED AND ENSURE THAT WATER IS NOT PENETRATING THE CABLE. THE RESULTING PROBLEM IS OFTEN NOT CORRECTED PROPERLY BY THE DEALERS. I EXPECT THAT THIS PROBLEM WILL COST AT A MINIMUM OF $300 FOR THE DASH MECHANISM, $20 FOR EACH CABLE THAT MAY NEED TO BE REPLACED PLUS LABOR COSTS, MORE IF IT IS NOT CORRECTED PROPERLY THE FIRST TIME.
DEFECT: 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA RUSTING FRAME. VEHICLE PURCHASED NEW IN 2000 AND PURCHASED RUST PROOFING PACKAGE. FRAME RUST WAS NOTICED IN 2004 AND RETURNED TO RUST PROOFING VENDOR FOR WARRANTY. WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE FRAME AND TO GO BACK TO TOYOTA. TOYOTA AT THE TIME WAS RECALLING TACOMA'S FOR A RUSTING FRAME PROBLEM. TOYOTA TUNDRA'S HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED, BUT TOYOTA WILL ARRANGE INSPECTION AND WILL FIX WITH A GEL APPLICATION (WHEN AVAILABLE) IF RUSTING IS PRESENT. WE FEEL THEY SHOULD HANDLE THIS PROBLEM WITH A RECALL AND OFFER THE CUSTOMER THE SAME OPTIONS AS FOR THE TACOMA RECALL: IF THERE IS NO RUST, AUTOMATICALLY EXTEND WARRANTY TO 15 YEARS, IF THERE IS RUST, THE FRAMES ARE REPLACED AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER OR TOYOTA WOULD BUY BACK THE TRUCK AT 150 PERCENT OF THE HIGH KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE. MY TRUCK HAS UNDER 80,000 MILES ON IT AND I DON'T FEEL THIS PROBLEM WILL GO AWAY ANYTIME SOON. RUST IS FALLING OFF THE TRUCK FRAME STAINING THE GARAGE FLOOR AND NO MATTER HOW MUCH GEL THEY PUT ON, IT WILL NOT LAST. BECAUSE I WAS PRO-ACTIVE IN SCRAPING OFF THE RUST AND APPLYING RUST RESISTOR MYSELF (BECAUSE TOYOTA REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING FOR ME IN 2004), I HAVE DETERRED THE FRAME FROM RUSTING THROUGH AT THIS TIME. HOWEVER, FROM A SAFETY STANDPOINT AND DUE TO THE FACT THAT TOYOTA HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE TACOMA, I FEEL THEY SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THE DEFECT IN THE FRAME MATERIAL FOR THE TUNDRA. *TR
BRAKE PROBLEMS ON 2000 TUNDRA ; THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW, BY MYSELF, IN APRIL, 2000. ON 5-31-01, AT 21,506 MILES, I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR WARRANTY WORK ON THE BRAKES. I HAD COMPLAINED OF VIBRATIONS WHILE BRAKING. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THEY HAD MANY SUCH COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS VEHICLE. THEY INSTALLED A KIT WHICH TRANSFERRED SOME OF THE BRAKING LOAD FROM THE FRONT WHEELS TO THE REAR, THUS REDUCING THE TENDENCY OF THE ROTORS TO OVERHEAT AND WARP, IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME. THEY ALSO REPLACED THE PADS AND SHOES, AND TURNED THE ROTORS. THE BRAKES WERE SATISFACTORY UNTIL I HAD A NORMAL BRAKE-JOB ON 7-14-03, AT 62,040 MILES, WHICH I HAD PERFORMED AT A GOODYEAR SHOP IN LAKE HAVASU CITY, AZ. THE ROTORS WERE TURNED, (FOR THE SECOND TIME, COUNTING THE WARENTEE WORK) AND NEW PADS WERE INSTALLED. BY MID-NOVEMBER, AT AROUND 65,500 MILES, I NOTICED A PULSATING, "GRINDING" SOUND EMINATING FROM THE FRONT END AT LOW SPEED, WHICH WOULD GO AWAY WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. BY THE END OF DECEMBER, AT 67,000 MILES, A MAJOR VIBRATION HAS DEVELOPED IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. IT IS SO PRONOUNCED THAT I AM HESITENT TO OPERATE THE VEHICLE OUT OF TOWN. FROM PERUSING THE INTERNET, IT IS APPARENT THAT MANY TUNDRA DRIVERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM; IT WOULD SEEM THAT A DESIGN FLAW EXISTS IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM OF THIS OTHERWISE FINE AUTOMOBILE.
