DT: THE CONSUMER STATES THAT SHE AND HER HUSBAND WERE TRAVELING ON THE INTERSTATE BETWEEN 70-75 MPH AND VEHICLE WAS NOT OPERATING CORRECTLY. THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WAS NOT CORRECT. THE OWNERS CHANGED SEATING ARRANGEMENTS, AND THE WIFE TOOK OVER DRIVING AFTER ONE HOUR AND A HALF. THE OTHER DRIVER NOTICED THAT THE TRUCK WAS PULLING HER INTO AN 18 WHEELER THAT WAS TRAVELING BESIDES HER. THE INTERSTATE WAS FLAT THAT THEY WERE TRAVELING ON. SHE WAS TRYING TO APPLY BRAKE PRESSURE AND GET AWAY FROM THE 18 WHEELER. THE STEERING WAS UNCONTROLLABLE BEFORE THEY CRASHED. THE NEXT THING THAT THE OWNER REMEMBERED WAS THAT THEY WERE GOING OFF THE ROAD, WITH ONE TIRE IN THE DIRT, AND THEN THE VEHICLE STARTS FLIPPING. THE VEHICLE WAS SITTING UP STRAIGHT ACROSS BOTH LANES THAT THEY WERE TRAVELING. THE POLICE AND AMBULANCE ARRIVED AT THE SCENE. . THE OWNER'S HUSBAND WAS KILLED IN THIS ACCIDENT, AND THERE WERE TWO INJURIES WHO WERE TAKEN BY AMBULANCE TO THE HOSPITAL. A POLICE REPORT WAS ISSUED. THE OWNER HAD JUST NOTICED THE PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED, AND AWARE OF THE ACCIDENT. DEALERSHIP REIMBURSED THE OWNER ON THE REST OF HER EXTRA EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE OWNER HAS NOT TALKED TO TOYOTA. ALSO, THE OWNER BECAME AWARE OF NHTSA RECALL. 05V225000. *AK *TT
3 INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES BROKE OFF COMPLETELY STARTING IN 2004 FRONT PASSENGER DOOR, THEN IN 2005 RIGHT REAR PASSENGER, 2006 THE DRIVER HANDLE BROKE. TOYOTA DID NOT WANT TO REPAIR SAID IT WAS NOT A MANUFACTURES DEFECT. EVERYTHING IS PLASTIC AND CHEAPLY MADE, I HAD TO PAY FOR REPAIR, FEARED THAT IN AN EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT I WOULD BE BE ABLE TO EXIT MY VEHICLE UNLESS I ROLLED WINDOW DOWN AND OPENED DOOR FROM OUTSIDE HANDLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. IN 2004 THE CONTACT REPLACED THE OXYGEN SENSORS, AND THE VEHICLE WAS AT THE DEALER FOR THE SAME REPAIR. THE FAILURE OCCURRED LESS THAN 20,000 MILES APART FROM ONE ANOTHER. HE DISCOVERED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN WITH ITEM # 10007090 ( CONCERNING ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:MANIFOLD/HEADER/MUFFLER/TAIL PIPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS HAD THE SAME FAILURE, AND FELT THAT THE MANUFACTURER PLACED A DEFECTIVE COMPONENT ON THE VEHICLES. THE CONTACT AND THE OTHER VEHICLE OWNERS SHOULD NOT BE REQUIRED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 53,000, AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 30,000.*AK
(1) ON 7/30/03 AT 5796 MILES, ONLY 10 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASING A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA (9/27/2002), I EXPERIENCED A VIOLENT VIBRATION DURING LIGHT BRAKING AT SPEEDS OF 45-60 MPH. 2) CONCERNED FOR MY AND OTHER MOTORISTS' SAFETY, I TOOK IT IN TO THE KIRKLAND TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. (3) KIRKLAND TOYOTA COMPLETED THE FRONT BRAKES CAMPAIGN AND REPLACED THE FOLLOWING UNDER OP CODE BR2005: CALIPERS, BRAKE PADS, WHEEL BEARINGS, BACKING PLATE, TURN ROTORS, AND TUBES. THEY ALSO BLED THE BRAKES AND TORQUED THE WHEELS. (1) ON 8/13/04, AT 10494 MILES, I NOTICED THAT THE VIOLENT VIBRATION HAD RETURNED. (2) CONCERNED FOR MY AND OTHER MOTORISTS' SAFETY, I TOOK IT IN TO THE KIRKLAND TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AGAIN. (3) KIRKLAND TOYOTA TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THE TSB ON REAR BRAKE VIBRATION, OP CODE 472151 COMBO CODE A. THE SERVICE DEPT. RELACED BOTH REAR DRUMS. (1) THE FOLLOWING DAY, 8/14/04 I TEST DROVE THE VEHICLE AND DISCOVERED THAT THE VIOLENT VIBRATION DURING LIGHT BRAKING HAD INCREASED, NOW OCCURRING ON BOTH GRADES AND FLAT SURFACES. (2) MY NEXT STEP IS TO CONTACT THE DEALERSHIP AGAIN, BUT I AM NOT ENCOURAGED THAT A SOLUTION WILL BE FOUND. *AK
I OWN A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA, WITH A I-FORCE V-8 ENGINE. AT EXACTLY 60,000 MILES, THE ENGINE GELED AND TOYOTA REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I ENDED UP REPLACING THE ENGINE MYSELF AT A COST OF $4800.00.*AK
CONSUMER STATED TIRE PRESSURE STICKER PROVIDED WRONG INFORMATION. IT INDICATED THE FOLLOWING: 26 PSI AT THE FRONT TIRES, AND 29 PSI ON THE REAR TIRES. AT 26 PSI THE TIRE EXPERIENCED TREAD SEPARATION, CONSUMER ALREADY REPLACED TWO FRONT TIRES. *AK
THE TWO FRONT TIRES WORE PREMATURELY. AS A RESULT THERE WERE CRACKS ON THE SIDE WALL OF THE TIRE. THE CONSUMER WAS CONCERNED THAT A BLOWOUT WILL OCCUR. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB
CONSUMER COMPLAINED ABOUT FRONT SUSPENSION PROBLEM. WHEN DRIVING AND HITTING A BUMP VEHICLE SHOOK BADLY, CONSUMER ALMOST LOST CONTROL OF STEERING. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER 3 TIMES, AND EACH TIME THEY TOLD CONSUMER THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH VEHICLE. *AK
MY AXLE IS BEING REPLACED ON MY 2002 TUNDRA. MY LOCAL MECHANIC SAYS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. DEALER WILL NOT ADMIT OR DENY THIS. IT SEEMS THAT THIS COULD BE A REAL SAFEY ISSUE. THIS WAS DISCOVERED DURING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE.
VIBRATION NEAR FRONT OF 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA ACCESS CAB, MOST NOTICEABLE AT 25-40MPH WITHOUT AND WITH BRAKES APPLIED. THE VIBRATION DURATION OSCILLATES IN DIRECT PROPORTION TO THE VEHICLE SPEED. AND LASTS FROM ONCE PER TWO SECONDS TO TWICE PER SECOND. HAVE TAKEN TO DEALER (DON JACOBS, WI) 4 OR 5 TIMES WITHOUT SATISFACTION. DEALER HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE, AND RECOMMENDED NEW TIRES TO CIRCUMVENT THE WISCONSIN LEMON LAW, WHICH ALLOWS CONSUMERS TO RETURN A VEHICLE IF THE PROBLEM CANNOT BE ALLEVIATED AFTER MULTIPLE ATTEMPTS TO BE CORRECTED. PROBLEM LESS NOTICEABLE AFTER REPLACEMENT OF TIRES, BUT HAS SINCE GOTTEN WORSE. NOT AN ENGINE PROBLEM, AS I HAVE SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL TO VARY THE ENGINE SPEED WITH NO CHANGE IN THE SYMPTOMS. I HAVE OWNED 3 OTHER TOYOTAS PRIOR TO THIS ONE, BUT I BELIEVE THIS WILL BE MY LAST UNLESS I RECEIVE SOME SATISFACTION. I SUBMITTED THE VEHICLE PROBLEM TO TOYOTA ON A SURVEY THEY SENT ME AND HAVE NEVER RECEIVED A REPLY. I GUESS THEY DON'T WANT OUR CONTINUED BUSINESS.
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED AND APPLYING THE BRAKES. PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, RESULTING IN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. ALSO, FRONT RIGHT WHEEL SMOKED AND LOCKED UP. *AK AT 8,000 MILES, VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY SCREECHED AND SMOKE CAME OUT FROM RIGHT FRONT. BRAKES STILL OPERATES; HOWEVER, IT HAS EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. ALSO FOUND WHERE LEAK ON THE BRAKING SYSTEM. DEALER STATED THAT VEHICLE FELL UNDER GENERAL MAINTENANCE. *LA
I OWN A 2002 TUNDRA V8 SR5 4WD. I BEGAN EXPERIENCING BRAKE VIBRATIONS AROUND 15,000 MILES. I HAVE HAD THE TRUCK INTO WARRANTY SERVICE AT LEAST FOUR TIMES WITH NO RESOLUTION. TWICE THEY TOLD ME THEY COULD "NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM." I AM VERY FRUSTRATED AND DISAPPOINTED. I AM A DEVOTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER AND I AM CONSIDERING TRADING IN THE VEHICLE FOR ANOTHER MANUFACTURER. *AK
FAILURE OF RIGHT FRONT SUSPENSION RESULTING IN WHEEL ASSEMBLY COMING OFF OF VEHICLE. WHILE PULLING AWAY FROM A TRAFFIC LIGHT THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL ASSEMBLY INCLUDING DRIVESHAFT, BRAKE ROTOR AND ALL ATTACHED WIRES AND HOSES CAME OFF THE TRUCK AND ENDED UP UNDER THE VEHICLE.
WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION. UPON IMPACT, FRONTAL AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING, THE FRONT PASSENGER TIRE COLLAPSED UNDER THE VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE BALL JOINTS BUT BLAMED THE DRIVER HITTING SOMETHING TO CAUSE THEM TO BREAK. *AK PE04040_CAT *SC *JB
RECURRING BRAKE VIBRATION PROBLEMS WITH 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA ACCESS CAB V8. CALIPERS AND ROTORS WERE REPLACED UNDER A SERVICE BULLETIN, BUT PROBLEM COMES BACK.
WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN AT ABOUT 25 MPH THE PASSENGER SIDE LOWER BALL JOINT SEPARATED. THIS CAUSED THE UPPER BALL JOINT TO SEPARATE AND THE WHEEL FOLDED UP UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE C.V. SHAFT AND INNER FENDER WERE ALSO DAMAGED. MY EXTENDED WARRANTY COMPANY INFORMED ME THAT THE SEALED BALL JOINT HAD NO LUBRICANT IN IT. THE TRUCK HAS AN EMPTY LOAD MOST OF THE TIME. PE04040_CAT
TOYOTA TUNDRA TRUCK HAS RECURRENT BRAKE PROBLEMS WITH WARPING OF THE ROTORS. *AK
MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO SERVICE FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM WHILE UNDER WARRANTY - 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA 2/03-I TOOK MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA TO A DEALERSHIP IN SCOTTSDALE, AZ (RIGHT TOYOTA) WITH CONCERN OVER BRAKE PULSATION. THE MILEAGE ON MY VEHICLE WAS 32,000 MILES. THE DEALER INFORMED ME THAT MY TRUCK WAS DUE FOR A 30,000 MILE SERVICE INTERVAL AND CHECKING BRAKES WAS NORMAL PROCEDURE. I RECEIVED AN INVOICE NOTING MY FRONT BRAKES WERE 90% WORN & REAR BRAKES WERE 40% WORN. THE DEALERSHIP OFFERED TO REPLACE THE FRONT PADS FOR $400. I DECLINED AND HAD MY BRAKES SERVICED ELSEWHERE 1/13/04-I TOOK MY TRUCK TO A SECOND DEALERSHIP IN PHOENIX, AZ (CAMELBACK TOYOTA) FOR THE 60,000 MILE SERVICE INTERVAL. THE DEALER PERFORMED THE SERVICE AND IN THE PROCESS OF CHECKING THE BRAKES NOTED THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED DUE TO TWO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS (#BR004-02; #BR003-02) THE CONDITION OF THE ROTORS AND DRUMS WERE WARPED, WITH EXCESSIVE WEAR. THE DEALER WANTED TO REPLACE THE BRAKE SYSTEM. THEY SAID THAT THE REQUIRED SERVICE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PERFORMED UNDER WARRANTY WITH THE TSBS. THE MILEAGE LIMIT ON THOSE TSBS WAS 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES. SINCE I WAS OVER THE MILEAGE REQUIREMENT, YET HAD ORIGINALLY BROUGHT MY TRUCK IN FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM PRIOR TO 36,000 MILES TOYOTA OFFERED TO COVER THE PARTS IF I PAID THE $1,100.00 IN LABOR. I REFUSED BECAUSE THIS PROBLEM WAS ALERTED TO TOYOTA PRIOR TO 36,000 AND WAS MIS DIAGNOSED AS WORN PADS I CALLED TOYOTAS CORPORATE SERVICES NUMBER AT 800-331-4331 WITH ALL THE DETAILS OF THIS CASE. THEY HAVE REFUSED ASSISTANCE. TOYOTAS INTERNAL REFERENCE NUMBER FOR THIS IS 200401090758. I HAVE DOCUMENTATION (THE 30KMILE SERVICE INVOICE) THAT NOTES I HAD BRAKE ISSUES PRIOR TO THE EXPIRATION OF THE TSB WARRANTY COVERING THE BRAKES. IT HAS BEEN PROVIDED TO CAMELBACK TOYOTA, AND THE FACTORY IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE, YET THEY STILL REFUSE TO HONOR THEIR OWN POLICY FOR REPLACING A BRAKE SYSTEM THAT IS UNSAFE. *CB
WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH DRIVER APPLIED BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THIS CAUSED THE DRIVER TO SKID INTO A MERIDIAN STRIP BARRIER. DRIVER MAINTAINED CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND WAS ABLE TO DRIVE TO THE DEALER FOR ANALYSIS. THE MECHANIC COULD NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
BRAKES HAVE BEEN SQUEAKING AND VIBRATING. CALLED DEALER. DEALER IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND WILLING TO FIX UNDER WARRANTY.*AK
VEHICLE VIBRATES WHEN BRAKES ARE APPLIED AT FREEWAY SPEEDS. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO TWO DEALERSHIPS, SIX DIFFERENT TIMES AND PROBLEM IS STILL THERE. THE FOLLOWING HAS BEEN REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES. ROTORS, CALIPERS, BEARINGS, REAR DRUMS AND BRAKE PADS. THE ROTORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED TWICE BECAUSE THEY WARPED IN TWO WEEKS TIME. LAST DEALER TOLD ME THAT THEIR TECH. COULD NOT FIND WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS AND THAT SOMEONE FROM TOYOTA WOULD HAVE TO COME TEST DRIVE WITH ME. I AM CONCERNED THAT THE VIBRATION WILL BECOME A SAFETY ISSUE. *JB
2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA 43,000 MILES HAS A SEVERE VIBRATION WHEN BRAKING AT ANY SPEED, STEERING WHEEL SHAKES SIDE TO SIDE AND I FEEL LIKE I'M GOING TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. DEALER (ROCKLAND TOYOTA) ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEMS AND WILL NOT PAY FOR REPAIR SINCE I'M PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD OF 36,000 MILES. *JB

BRAKES BEGAN SHAKING ABOUT TWO MONTHS AFTER I FIRST BOUGHT THE TRUCK. I WENT ON AN EXTENDED ROAD TRIP AND AT ONE POINT, WHEN GOING DOWN A GRADE, MY BRAKES BEGAN TO SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY THAT I THOUGHT I MIGHT LOSE CONTROL. I HAD TO PULL OF THE ROAD AND INSPECT MY BRAKES! WHEN I RETURNED FROM MY TRIP, I REPLACED THE PADS AND TURNED THE ROTORS. THIS WAS ABOUT 2 MONTHS AGO, AND I AM BEGINNING TO EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM. *LA
TOYOTA TUNDRA 2001 AND 2002 MODEL YEARS. BRAKES: FRONT DISC ROTORS AND REAR DRUMS WARP AND ARE OUT OF ROUND. CAUSES MODERATE TO SEVERE VIBRATIONS WHEN BRAKING. BRAKING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS VERY DANGEROUS DUE TO SEVERE VIBRATIONS AND NEAR LOSS OF CONTROL.
I OWN A 2002 SR5 TOYOTA TUNDRA THAT HAS A REAL BAD VIBRATION AT THE FRONT SINCE I HAD ABOUT 32,000 MILES I HAVE NOW 72000 MILES AND I DON'T KNOW IF ANYBODY HAS A COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS PROBLEM THEY CHANGE THE BRAKES AT 30,000 MILES , I'M CONCERNED ABOUT ANY ACCIDENTS. *JB
HEATER/AC FAN MAKES LOUD CLICKING NOISE AT ALL SPEEDS. *TR
MY STAKE-BED TRUCK'S AXLE BROKE. THE TRUCK HAD UNDER 12,000. IT WAS REPAIRED IN ODESSA, TX AND THE SERVICE MANAGER TELLS ME THE CONVERSIONS ON THE TRUCK ARE TOO MUCH FOR THE TRUCK. THAT IS WHY THE AXLE BROKE. HE STATED THAT MY HUSBAND AND I ARE IN SERIOUS DANGER OF BODILY INJURY AND OR DEATH. NOW THE BRAKES HAD TO BE REPAIRED AND I WAS AGAIN TOLD BY AN EMPLOYEE OF I-10 TOYOTA THAT THE TRUCK IS TOO HEAVY FOR THE WEIGHT IT'S CARRYING. OF COURSE HE SAID THAT WAS ONLY HIS OPINION.
IMPROPER FRONT BRAKE CALIPER SIZE, WHICH CAUSES WARPING OF THE FRONT BRAKE DISC ,AND SUBSEQUENT SERIOUS STEERING WHEEL VIBRATION OF MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. TOYOTA IS DECLINING TO ISSUE AN OFFICIAL RECALL OF THE DEFECTIVE BRAKE COMPONENTS, AND DEALERS HAVE BEEN UNCOOPERATIVE IN FIXING THIS PROBLEM. I HOPE NO ONE HAS TO BE INJURED FOR TOYOTA TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.*AK
SEVERE VIBRATION IN BRAKING AT LOW AND HIGH SPEEDS. *AK
EXPERIENCING A NOTICABLE SHAKE IN THE FRONT END WHEN BRAKING FROM 50-40 MPH. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON SINCE I PURCHASED THE TRUCK IN OCT 2002. I HAVE BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES. THEY HAVE REPLACED THE FRONT AND REAR ROTORS AND DRUMS WITHOUT ANY LUCK.
AT 20,000 MILES, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SHIFT VERY HARD AND THE CEL CAME ON. DEALER SAID THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE TO THE TRANSMISSION AND THE ERROR CODE FROM THE OBD II STATED "MIS SHIFT". IT TOOK 7 WEEKS TO GET THE PART.*AK
POOR BRAKING AND SHIMMY FROM TOYOTA TUNDRA. *TR
40 MPH. DRIVING DOWN LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN. RIDING THE BRAKES. SHAKING SO BAD, I THOUGHT I MIGHT WRECK. SCARED ME AND MY FAMILY VERY MUCH. DEALER WILL NOT FIX UNDER WARRANTY. DEALER "FIXED BRAKES" 12,000 MILES AGO. TRUCK HAS 24,000 MILES ON ODOMETER. HEARD FROM OTHER TUNDRA OWNERS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT NOTICED FLUID NEAR THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE WHEEL. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE SEALS ON THE REAR AXLE ASSEMBLY. SEVERAL YEARS LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE SEALS WERE REPLACED AGAIN. SEVERAL MONTHS AFTER THE SECOND REPAIR, THE COMPONENT FAILED AGAIN. THE CONTACT IS IN THE PROCESS OF TAKING THE VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALER. HE FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 4,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000.
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION YET NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. THE DEALER WAS NOTIFIED. *NLM *NLM

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH OR GREATER, THE VEHICLE AND STEERING WHEEL VIBRATED EXCESSIVELY WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. SUDDENLY, THE FRONT END BEGAN TO SHIMMY WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE TRAVELING AT ANY SPEED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND THEY ADJUSTED THE ROTORS. THE FAILURE OCCURRED SEVEN MORE TIMES WITHOUT ANY RESOLUTION. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
BRAKE PEDAL FADES TO FLOOR WHEN SITTING IN STOP POSITION
I OWN A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA THAT HAS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM. THIS DEFECT CAUSES THE FRONT ROTORS TO WARP, WHICH IN TURN CAUSES MY TRUCK TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY DURING BREAKING AND ALSO HINDERS OVERALL BRAKING ABILITY. AFTER HAVING MY BRAKES SERVICED SEVERAL TIMES, I LEARNED THAT TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN ADDRESSING THE DEFECT IN THE BRAKING SYSTEM OF MY MODEL TRUCK AND DETAILING HOW TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE COST OF SAID REPAIRS EXCEEDS $2000. I FIND IT ABSURD THAT TOYOTA RECOGNIZES THE DEFECT BUT REFUSES TO EXECUTE A RECALL FOR THE BRAKING SYSTEM. BASICALLY, THE CONSUMER IS LEFT WITH THREE OPTIONS: 1) PAY $2000+ TO REPAIR A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT; 2) PAY FOR BRAKE SERVICE ABOUT EVERY 2 OR 3 MONTHS; OR 3) DRIVE A VEHICLE WITH POORLY FUNCTIONING BRAKES. I, ALONG WITH MANY OTHERS WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AS I, AM CURRENTLY DRIVING A VEHICLE WITH POORLY FUNCTIONING BRAKES, BECAUSE I CANNOT AND WILL NOT AFFORD THE COST OF EITHER OF THE FIRST TWO OPTIONS. IT REMAINS BEYOND MY UNDERSTANDING HOW TOYOTA CAN GET AWAY WITH RECOGNIZING THE PROBLEM WITH THEIR VEHICLES BUT NOT ATONE FOR THEIR POOR CRAFTSMANSHIP. ADDITIONALLY, MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE REPORTED THAT, WHILE THEIR VEHICLES WERE UNDER WARRANTY, THEIR TOYOTA SERVICE FACILITY BLAMED THE BRAKE PROBLEM ON INDIVIDUAL BRAKING HABITS. HOWEVER, AFTER THEIR WARRANTY EXPIRED, THEY INFORMED THEM OF THE DEFECT AND OFFERED TO FIX IT AT FULL COST. RIDICULOUS. *JB
I DID NOT GET ANY EXTENDED WARRANTED NOTICE FROM TOYOTA TO FIX THE FRAME. I WAS LIVING IN MISSISSIPPI IN 2002 AND MOVED TO TENNESSEE IN 2004 WHERE THE SALT AND RUSTED THE FRAME. I ONLY GOT ONE RECALL ON THE RUST PROBLEMS, BUT I DID NOT GET THE EXTENDED WARRANTIES!!! I LIVE AND BOUGHT THE 2002 TUNDRA IN JOHNSON CITY, TN.... ACCORDING TO A LETTER SENT OUT TO TOYOTA DEALERS, TOYOTA HAS EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON 2000-2003 TUNDRA FRAMES, WHICH ALLOWS DEALERS TO REPLACE RUSTED FRAMES ON 2000-20003 TOYOTA TUNDRAS AT NO CHARGE TO THE CONSUMER. THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS FOR ANY TOYOTA TUNDRA OWNERS DEALING WITH FRAME RUST ISSUES AS WELL AS A STRONG SYMBOL OF TOYOTA'S COMMITMENT TO QUALITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. WHILE THIS MOVE DIDN'T HAPPEN AS QUICKLY AS WE WOULD HAVE LIKED, WE STRONGLY APPLAUD THIS ACTION. *TR
I WAS ROTATING THE TIRES AND TIGHTENING THE LUG NUTS WHEN SIX BROKE. MY TORQUE WRENCH WAS SET AT 80 POUNDS, BELOW THE 82 RECOMMENDATION. TWO LUG NUTS ON THE RIGHT REAR ON ONE ON THE RIGHT FRONT WOULD NOT TIGHTEN AND JUST KEPT TURNING. EVENTUALLY EACH OF THE LUG NUTS FELL OFF, BREAKING THE STUD. THE STUDS DID NOT "SNAP" LIKE A CLEAN BREAK. THE LUGS THAT BROKE WERE POSSIBLY NOT HARDENED OR WERE MADE FROM SOME VERY SOFT METAL. THE LEFT SIDE PRODUCED SIMILAR RESULTS ON THE LEFT REAR. THE LEFT FRONT SECURED ALL SIX LUG NUTS PROPERLY WITH THE 80 # TORQUE SETTING. ON THE LEFT REAR, THREE OF THE STUDS, ALL ADJACENT TO ONE ANOTHER BROKE JUST LIKE THE THREE DID ON THE RIGHT SIDE. I HAVE BEEN CHANGING TIRES FOR 35 YEARS AND HAVE ONLY BROKEN ONE STUD PREVIOUSLY. EIGHTY FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE IS NOT VERY MUCH TO BREAK OFF A STUD. CHEVROLET CURRENTLY SETS LUG NUTS AT 145 FOOT POUNDS OF TORQUE. I FEEL SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE LUG STUDS ON THIS VEHICLE, OR AT LEAST THE SIX THAT MERELY BROKE. THIRTY OF THE LUG STUDS HELD AND TIGHTENED ACCORDING TO PROCEDURES. HOWEVER, THE SIX THAT BROKE DID SO BEFORE EVER CAUSING THE TORQUE WRENCH TO REACH A MERE 80 FOOT POUNDS, WHICH WAS ACTUALLY TWO POUNDS UNDER THE RECOMMENDED SETTING. IN LOOKING AT THE STEEL STUD WHERE IT TWISTED APART, THE METAL HAS THE APPEARANCE OF CAST POT METAL, NOT COLD HARD STEEL. SO FAR, I HAVE RECEIVED NO HELP FROM THE TOYOTA DEALER. THEY SAY, "YOU CAUSED THEM TO BREAK, IT IS NOT OUR FAULT. WE CHANGE TIRES ALL DAY WITH OUR AIR IMPACT WRENCHES AND WE ARE NOT BREAKING THEM." A "DIGITORQUE" TORQUE WRENCH IS MUCH MORE ACCURATE THAN AN IMPACT WRENCH. THAT IS WHY I OWN ONE BECAUSE I REALIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF SETTING NUTS AND LUGS AT THE RIGHT SETTING. FOR THESE REASONS, I FEEL THAT SOME LUG NUT STUDS THAT MAY HAVE NOT BEEN HARDENED, ETC., WERE INSTALLED ON MY VEHICLE SINCE THEY BROKE OFF UNDER VERY LITTLE PRESSURE.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT TOYOTA IS NOT PROPERLY REPAIRING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE OPERATES NORMALLY EVERY TWO TO THREE MONTHS, BUT THE FAILURE ALWAYS RECURS. HE IS CONSTANTLY HAVING TO ROTATE THE TIRES AND ALIGN THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURES HAVE BEEN OCCURRING SINCE THE YEAR THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THE VIN AND ENGINE SIZE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 84,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.
