WHILE DRIVING I HEARD A SQUEALING NOISE COMING FROM MY A/C. TURNED FAN OFF AND SQUEALING STOPPED. TURNED FAN BACK ON AND SQUEALING STARTED AGAIN THEN SOMETHING FEEL OFF MY CAR AND THE A/C WOULD NOT BLOW COLD AIR. JUST GOT BACK FROM FIRESTONE AND THEY SAID THAT I NEED A NEW A/C CLUTCH AND COMPRESSOR AND IT WOULD COST $864.30. MY CAR IS NOT OLD ENOUGH AND DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH MILES FOR THE CLUTCH TO FAIL AND TO NEED A NEW COMPRESSOR. *AK
HI, IT SEEMS AS IF MANY 2000+ VW JETTAS HAVE DEFECTIVE REAR CENTER SEAT BELTS. WHEN YOU FOLD DOWN THE REAR SEATS, THE CENTER SEAT BELTS WILL RETRACT IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MOVE THE SEAT BACK TO THE UPRIGHT POSITION WITHOUT DISCONNECTING THE SEAT BELT. MANY PEOPLE, MYSELF INCLUDED, JUST PERMANENTLY DISCONNECT THE CENTER SEAT BELT TO AVOID SUCH PROBLEMS. I HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL OTHER RECALLS THAT SEEMED LESS DANGEROUS THAN THIS PROBLEM COULD POTENTIALLY BE WITH 5 PEOPLE IN THE CAR. COULD YOU INVESTIGATE HOW FREQUENT THIS SAFETY ISSUE OCCURS AND POSSIBLY INITIATE A RECALL? I HAD THIS FIXED ONCE BEFORE, BUT APPARENTLY THE FIX DIDN'T LAST. THANKS, NEIL KUMPERS. *NM
WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH VEHICLE STALLED. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER, AND TECHNICIAN DETERMINED ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
I AM EXPERIENCING A LOSS OF POWER ON HILLS AND WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE AN INTERMITANT CHECK ENGINE LIGHT APPEARS. I OWN A VW JETTA TDI 2000. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM 1ST AS A TURBO CONTROL MODULE, $252.00. SOME INCREASE IN POWER BUT NOT VERY MUCH, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OFF. 2ND TRIP TO DEALER AFTER AN 1-1/2 HOUR DISCUSSION ABOUT CHARGING ME ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC FEE AND MY CONSENTING THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS CARBON IN INTAKE AND EGR VALVE REPLACEMENT. I ASKED 4 QUESTIONS :HOW DOES CARBON GET IN AN AIR INTAKE?, HOW DID THE TECHNICIAN DETERMINE THIS WAS PROBLEM? WHY WASN'T IT IDENTIFIED THE 1ST TIME I TOOK CAR IN AND WHAT GUARANTEE WOULD I GET? THE DEALER WOULD NOT OR COULD NOT ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP AT VW AMERICA HAS NOT ANSWERED THEM BUT HAS OFFERED TO PAY 100% PARTS AND LABOR FOR THE REPAIR AFTER TWO DAYS OF CALLING AND TRYING TO GET AN ANSWER FROM BOTH OF THEM. DON, IS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP WHO OFFERED TO PAY FOR REPAIR UPON MY GOING TO ANOTHER DEALER AND PAYING FOR ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC TO VERIFY THE PROBLEM, AS THE FIRST DEALER HAS REFUSED SERVICE TO THE VEHICLE BECAUSE I INSISTED ON ANSWERS TO MY QUESTIONS BEFORE OK'ING REPAIR. THE NUMBER I CALLED FOR VW AMERICA IS 1-800- 822-8987. I HAVE ABOUT 81,000 MILES ON THE CAR AND THIS PROBLEM CREATES A SERIOUS SAFTEY HAZARD ON THE INTERSTATE OR ANY HIGHWAY WHERE A SLOW MOVING VEHICLE MAY BE A HAZARD. *AK
TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE DEALER REPLACED THE PART. HOWEVER, TWO WEEKS LATER THE PART FAILED AGAIN. *AK THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO INTO REVERSE. THE TRANSMISSION SLIPPED AND THE VEHICLE HAD RUN INTO A POLE AT A GAS STATION ON THE RIGHT FRONT SIDE. THIS PROBLEM REMAINED THE SAME. THE ENGINE LIGHT HAD COME ON ALONG WITH THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. OTHER PROBLEMS WERE: THE TIRE PRESSURE HAD TO BE RESET ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS, REAR PADS, A/C WAS NOT COOLING, GLOVE BOX, POWER WINDOWS, CONSOLE, POWER SUNROOF, INTERIOR TRIM, STEERING/SUSPENSION, DRIVEABILITY, TRIM ELECTRICAL, SOUND SYSTEM, AND HEATING/COOLING. *SC THE CONSUMER DID NOT REPORT ANY DAMAGE TO VEHICLE WHEN SHE HIT THE POLE. *JB
OWNER TRIED TO START ENGINE AFTER VEHICLE SITTING UNUSED FOR ONE WEEK. ENGINE WOULD NOT START, SO OWNER JUMP-STARTED IT AND LET IT RUN APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES. OWNER THEN DROVE VEHICLE APPROXIMATELY 8 MINUTES AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE CENTER CONSOLE AND THE RIGHT FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. PULLED OVER AND CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. EXHAUST SYSTEM WAS OVERHEATED AND SHOWED BLUE HEAT DISCOLORATION. PLASTICS AND CARPET ON CENTER FLOOR OF PASSENGER COMPARTMENT WERE BURNED.
I HAVE A 2000 VW JETTA TDI THAT I PURCHASED NEW. THE CLUTCH STARTED SLIPPING AND HAD TO BE REPLACED AT 51,203 MILES. ACCORDING TO TOM SAPELAK, THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE VW DEALER, THERE IS A RUBBER PIECE (MASS DAMPENER?) BETWEEN THE TWO PLATES OF THE FLYWHEEL. ON MY FLYWHEEL, THIS PIECE HAD 2.5" OF MOVEMENT, BUT THE SPECS INDICATED THAT IT SHOULD ONLY MOVE .1 MM. EVEN THOUGH THE OWNERS MANUAL INDICATES THAT THE 100,000 MILE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY FOR THIS VEHICLE WAS SUPPOSED TO COVER THE FLYWHEEL, I WAS TOLD THAT THIS FAILURE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I HAD TO PAY $1381.08 FOR A NEW CLUTCH KIT (CLUTCH, FLYWHEEL, CLUTCH RELEASE BEARING) AND THE LABOR TO REPLACE IT. I DO NOT BELIVE THAT THIS FAILURE COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY DRIVING HABITS. I HAD A 1985 VW GOLF DIESEL THAT HAD OVER 130,000 MILES WHEN I SOLD IT, AND I NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CLUTCH IN THAT VEHICLE. MY HUSBAND HAD A 1996 VW JETTA TURBODIESEL THAT HAD OVER 238,000 MILES ON IT WHEN WE SOLD IT, AND WE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE CLUTCH IN THAT VEHICLE EITHER. MY HUSBAND AND I ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE THAT DRIVE MY CAR AND WE ARE NOT "HARD" ON CLUTCHES.*AK
BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH MALFUNCTIONED, CAUSED CAR TO LOCK IN PARK, AND BRAKE LIGHTS BECAME INOPERATIVE. *AK
OIL BURNS EXCESSIVELY. AS A RESULT, CATALYTIC CONVERTER MALFUNCTIONED, AND WAS REPLACED TWICE WITHIN FOUR MONTHS.*AK
NUMEROUS WINDOW REGULATOR ISSUES, ONE TOTAL REPLACEMENT. SOME ACTIONS MUST BE TAKEN, THIS IS VERY EXPENSIVE AND MOST LIKELY AN EASY REMEDY AT THE FACTORY. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON WINDOW REGULATORS!*AK

WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH A FIRE STARTED UNDER THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE CAUSE OF FIRE WAS UNDETERMINED. ALSO, DEALERSHIP FLOOR MANAGER INDICATED THERE WERE MANY VOLKSWAGEN JETTAS WITH THIS KIND OF PROBLEM. *AK
REAR-ENDED WHILE AT A STOP. AIR BAG DID NOT DEPLOY. *AK
MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING HOME AT APPROXIMATELY 11:15 PM IN SNOWING CONDITIONS WHEN SHE STRUCK A SNOW PLOW TRUCK IN THE REAR. THE FRONT OF THE CAR WAS DEMOLISHED AND THE SPREADER DEVICE CAME THROUGH THE WINDSHIELD, CAUSING SEVERE FACIAL LACERATIONS. THE AIRBAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THERE WAS NO AIRBAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT ON THE DASH PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. THERE IS NO BRUISING ACROSS HER SHOULDER OR CHEST FROM THE SEATBELT (YET), THOUGH SHE WAS WEARING IT. THE AIRBAG CONTROLLER AND ECM HAVE NOT BEEN CHECKED FOR STORED FAULT CODES. *JB
WHEN TURN SIGNAL AND/OR HAZARD WARNING SIGNALS ARE USED AND LEFT IN THE "ON" POSITION, THE RATE AND WHICH THE SIGNAL LIGHTS BLINK GRADUALLY "SLOWS". AFTER THE SIGNALS ARE LEFT ON FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES, THE SIGNAL LIGHTS CEASE TO "BLINK" AND EVENTUALLY "FREEZE" AND ARE CONSTANTLY LIT. IF CAR WERE TO BECOME DISABLED, THE HAZARD WARNING LIGHTS WILL WORK FOR ABOUT 1 OR 2 MINUTES, AND THEREAFTER REMAIN CONSTANTLY LIT, THUS RENDERING THEM USELESS TO WARN APPROACHING MOTORISTS OF A DISABLED VEHICLE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE HAZAED SWITCH TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM.
CONSUMER STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO VIBRATE. HE HAD TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED. THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC THAT THE TRANSMISSION MOUNTS BROKE AND CAUSED THE ENGINE TO DROP DOWN. CONSUMER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS FAIRLY NEW AND HAD ONLY 42,182 MILES ON IT, AND THIS SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. *AK *SC *JB
2000 JETTA GL, CANNOT MOVE THE CAR OUT OF PARK. VEHICLE IS LOCKED. I HEARD THAT THIS IS COMMON WITH THE 2000 JETTA FROM MANY PEOPLE, AND I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR HAS LOCKED WHILE DRIVING. I FEEL THIS IS DANGEROUS.*AK
REAR BRAKES ON VW JETTA -- CALIPERS SEIZED, ROTORS RUINED, PADS METAL-TO-METAL. FRONT BRAKES VIRTUALLY IN FACTORY CONDITION. *AK
PASSENGER'S SIDE SEAT HEATER HAD A CIGARETTE SIZE BURN HOLE IN IT. WHILE DRIVING CONSUMER SMELLED A BURNING ODOR, WHICH BECAME STRONGER AS TIME PROGRESSED. ALSO, SMOKE CAME FROM THE SEAT. WHEN HEATER WAS TURNED OFF THE SMELL AND THE SMOKE CEASED. *AK VEHICLE WAS TAKEN AT THE DEALERSHIP. *LA
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED VEHICLE LOST POWER AND STALLED. DEALER REPLACED THE INTAKE AIR FILTER WHICH WAS CLOGGED AT CONSUMER'S EXPENSES OF $ 1,892.94. *AK THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE INTAKE HAD CARBON BUILD UP. THE INTAKE AND EGR WERE CLEANED AND THE AIR MASS METER WAS REPLACED . THE AIR METER WAS DEFECTIVE. AFTER THE REPAIRS, THE CONSUMER NOTICED THAT THE ENGINE WOULD CONTINUE TO COME ON. *SC
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD JERK ABNORMALLY WITH THE ILLUMINATION OF THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LAMP. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT THE MASS FLOW AIR SENSOR FAILED. THE CONTACT HAD RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A VOLUNTARY MANUFACTURERS RECALL IN REGARDS TO PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER THE RECALL. LESS THAN FOUR YEARS LATER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS THEN CONTACTED YET THEY OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 42,000. UPDATED 07/20/11*LJ THE SENSOR LIGHT FOR THE MASS AIR FLOW REPLACED TWICE IN DECEMBER 2007 AND AGAIN IN JUNE 2011. UPDATED 07/25/11
2000 JETTA (VW) 2 WEEKS AGO MY PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW BROKE AND BOUGHT NEW REGULATOR AND HAD FIXED. TODAY MY DRIVERS SIDE WINDOW BROKE. 60K ON VEHICLE AND I THINK THIS IS ABSURD. VW SHOULD RECALL ALL UNITS MANUFACTURED WITH THIS REGULATOR. I WILL BE GOING TO DEALERSHIP TOMMOROW TO SEE WHAT THEY SAY.*AK

MY JETTA HAS BEEN BACK AT THE DEALER 5 TIMES IN THE PAST TWO MONTHS TO REPAIR THE SAME PROBLEM. THE CAR HESITATES UPON ACCELERATION AS IF IT WILL STALL. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON. SOMETIMES IT STAYS ON UNTIL THEY RESET IT AND SOMETIMES IT GOES OFF. THE DEALER HAS REPLACED THE MASS AIR SENSOR AND CLEANED PARTS OF THE ENGINE. THEN THE INTAKE MANIFOLD HAD TO BE REPLACED. NOW THEY TOLD ME THE PROBLEM IS THE IGNITION COIL AND WIRES FOR AN ADDITIONAL $700.00. THIS CAR IS JUST THREE YEARS OLD AND I HAVE SPENT CLOSE TO $2000 IN REPAIRS IN TWO MONTHS. I DIDN'T EVEN MADE IT OUT OF THE DEALER'S PARKING LOT BEFORE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. VW NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE BUT THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVES WON'T HELP. *LA
MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR AND COOLANT TEMPERATURE SWITCH FAILURE AT 47000 MILES. VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA STATED CAR OUTSIDE OF 36 MONTH EMISSIONS WARRANTY.*AK
STARTING ON MAY 23,2003 I STARTED TAKING MY JETTA VR6 INTO THE DEALERSHIP DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE CHECK ENGINE (MIL) LIGHT WAS ON AND OCCASIONALLY WHILE DRIVING THE CAR WOULD DIE. I WOULD DRIVE AT 40 MPH OR BE AT A STOP SIGN AND EITHER WAY THE CAR WOULD JUST DROP ALL POWER. I LOST CONTROL OF STEERING AND EVERYTHING ELSE AND WOULD HAVE TO RESTART THE CAR WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD. THE 1ST TIME I WAS TOLD THAT A 40,000-MILE TUNE UP WOULD FIX THE SITUATION. IT OCCURRED AGAIN AFTER THE TUNE ABOUT TWO WEEKS LATER, AND I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS AN O2 SENSOR AND THE MASS FLOW SENSOR THAT HAS PROBLEMS. THEY PAID FOR THE MASS FLOW SENSOR AND IT'S LABOR AND I PAID FOR THE O2 SENSOR AND IT'S LABOR. AFTER THE REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT IT OCCURRED (WITH IN THE SAME WEEK); THEY SAID IT WAS ANOTHER O2 SENSOR AND THEY PAID FOR THE LABOR WHERE I PAID FOR THE PART. ON THE FOURTH VISIT, THEY SAID THAT IT WAS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND ONE OF THE 2 O2 SENSORS THAT HAD ALREADY BEEN REPLACED HAD GONE BAD AGAIN. THEY PAID FOR BOTH OF THESE ISSUES AND ASSURED ME THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED. IT WASN'T THE NEXT TIME THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE ALTERNATOR. AFTER MUCH DISCUSSION I ASKED THEM TO DRIVE IT AND MAKE SURE AS THE ALTERNATOR THEY WANTED ME TO BUY WAS $700. THEY CALLED BACK A WEEK LATER AND SAID THEY WERE WRONG IT WAS THE BATTERY INSTEAD AND THAT I OWED THEM $125. I PAID BECAUSE I WAS TOO TIRED TO ARGUE ANYMORE. THAT WAS ON 8/9/03. ON 10/6/03 THE CAR DIED AGAIN. THEY ARE NOW SAYING IT IS THE IGNITION SWITCH AND THAT IT WAS CAUSING THE BATTERY TO DRAIN (MEANING TO ME, I MAY NOT HAVE NEEDED TO PURCHASE A NEW BATTERY 2 MONTHS AGO). THEY WANTED ME TO PAY FOR THE PART AND HALF THE LABOR BECAUSE THE CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY (ONLY CAME WITH 2/24K). STARTING TO WONDER WHAT WILL THEY BLAME IT ON (AND CHARGE ME FOR) NEXT MONTH. CAR IS CURRENTLY AT 48500. *LA
TOOK CAR FOR ROUTINE OIL CHANGE. WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE ENGINE BLOCK AND THAT THE ENTIRE ENGINE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY A VW DEALER, HOWEVER, NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHY THE ENGINE BLOCK WOULD GET A CRACK. IN FACT, THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THEY HAD ONLY EVER SEEN THIS INCIDENT ONCE BEFORE. MY CAR HAD NEVER OVERHEATED OR ANYTHING PRIOR TO THIS. THE CAR IS NOW SITTING IN MY GARAGE BECAUSE I CANNOT DO ANYTHING WITH IT. IT CANNOT BE SOLD AND I CAN'T AFFORD $7100 FOR A NEW ENGINE. IN FACT THE CAR IS NOT EVEN WORTH THAT MUCH. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST PROBLEM THAT I HAVE HAD WITH THE CAR...THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS OTHER THINGS (SUCH AS THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT/MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, FUEL TANK HAD TO BE REPLACE TWICE, THE TRUNK LATCH BROKE ONE DAY, THE REAR BREAKS HAD PREMATURE WEAR, GLOVE BOX LATCH BROKE). THESE ARE POORLY CONSTRUCTED VEHICLES. I WISH I COULD GET RID OF IT.*AK
THE ENGINE COVER FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR HAS FALLEN OFF TWICE, IT FALLS ON ONE SIDE AND THEN HANGS ONTO THE GROUND. *LA
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY AND THE CAR BEGAN TO IDLE POORLY AND STALL, BECOMING DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. THE CAR WAS CHECKED FOR ERROR CODES AND IT WAS DETERMINED THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE CAR IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE SERVICE DEPT QUOTED OVER $400 TO REPAIR. SPOKE WITH AN INDEPENDENT PARTS STORE, THEY SAID THE SAME PART IS USED IN 4 CYL AND 6 CYL 2000 JETTA'S, AND VW IS CHARGING AROUND $60 FOR THE 4 CYL AND WELL OVER $150 FOR THE 6 CYL, FOR THE SAME PART. I HAVE THE 2000 6 CYL JETTA AND THEY WOULD NOT SELL ME THE PART.
FAILURE OF VEHICLE'S AIR MASS SENSORS.*MR THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR FAILED. A NEW THROTTLE BODY WAS ALSO INSTALLED. THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THESE PARTS WERE POORLY DESIGNED. *NLM
PURCHASED NEW JETTA 1.8T FROM DEALER IN 8/00. HAVE TAKEN IT BACK SEVERAL TIMES DUE TO CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND BACK FIRING W/SLIGHT HESITATION ON ACCELERATION. THEY REPLACED AIR FILTER 8/01, 10/3/01 REPLACED DEFECTIVE SENSOR & VALVE, 2/02 COULDN'T FIND REASON FOR CONTINUED BACKFIRING, HAD OIL CHANGE AND RESET LIGHT. NEXT COUPLE OF TIMES THE LIGHT CAME ON THEY SAID TO WAIT A COUPLE OF DAYS --IT DID GO OFF. 5/03 THEY PERFORMED DIAG TEST AND RESET LIGHT. SAID IF CAME ON AGAIN I'D NEED CATALYTIC CONVERTER. 8/13 IN SHOP AGAIN FOR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT THIS TIME DIAG TEST SAID THEY SHOULD REPLACE THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR & WIRING. TOLD ME NOT UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN A CONSISTENT ONGOING PROBLEM. WILL BE CALLING VW CUSTOMER CARE. *JB

HEADLIGHT SOCKETS HAVE MELTED 3 TIMES. TWICE ON THE RIGHT HEADLIGHT AND ONCE ON THE LEFT. WAS TOLD BY DEALER THAT IT WAS BECAUSE I USED NAPA AFTERMARKET HEADLIGHTS. ABOUT A YEAR AGO I REPLACED THE RIGHT SOCKET AND HEADLIGHT WITH PARTS PROVIDED BY VW DEALER. IT STILL MELTED. IT LOOKS LIKE THE CONNECTORS IN THE SOCKET ARE NOT SIZED TO HANDLE THE CURRENT AND HEAT UP UNTIL THE PLASTIC AROUND THEM MELTS.
I'VE HAD MY CAR FOR FOUR YEARS NOW AND THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME THAT THE DRIVER'S/PASSENGER'S WINDOWS HAVE COME OUT OF ALIGNMENT I'VE ALREADY HAD EACH SIDE REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING AGAIN. EACH TIME, IT COSTS ME AT LEAST $300 TO HAVE THIS FIXED AND FRANKLY, IT'S GETTING OLD. THERE MUST BE SOME DEFECT WITH THE PARTS OR OTHERWISE, I WOULDN'T HAVE TO REPLACE THE MOTOR EVERY OTHER DAY OF MY LIFE.*AK

THE FUEL LINE ON MY 2000 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA RECENTY BURST, MAKING A SOUND LIKE A BALLOON POPPING AND LEAKING SEVERAL GALLONS GASOLINE IN THE TEN MINUTES IT TOOK ME TO GET TO A SERVICE STATION FOR AN EMERGENCY REPAIR. THE MECHANIC WHO REMOVED THE FUEL LINE (WHICH I KEPT) SHOWED ME TWO SMALL SPLITS, BUT HE WAS UNCERTAIN ABOUT WHAT CAUSED THE DAMAGE. THE JETTA'S FUEL LINE RUNS IN A SHALLOW CHANNEL UNDER THE CAR, BUT I WAS ON A SMOOTH, PAVED STREET AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE AND DON'T RECALL HITTING A POTHOLE OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT MIGHT EXPLAIN THE DAMAGE. TWO THOUGHTS: DESPITE BEING IN A CHANNEL, CLEARANCE ON THE JETTA IS LOW AND THE FUEL LINE IS RATHER EXPOSED, SO IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN SCRAPED OR DAMAGED AT SOME OTHER TIME...PERHAPS BY ROAD DEBRIS OR DRIVING OVER A SPEED BUMP OR POTHOLE. THE ONLY OTHER LOGICAL EXPLANATION WOULD BE A DEFECTIVE FUEL LINE. IF THE FORMER, THEN VW SHOULD CONSIDER A RECALL TO RELOCATE THE FUEL LINE IN THIS MODEL OR INSTALL SOME TYPE OF SHIELDING. IF THE LATTER, THEN VW SHOULD REPLACE AND UPGRADE THE FUEL LINE IN THIS MODEL. (MY CAR HAS ONLY 25,674 MILES ON THE CLOCK AND I KEEP IT WELL MAINTAINED, SO IT WOULD HARD TO PUT THE FAILURE DOWN TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR.) GIVEN THE POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC RESULTS OF FUEL-LINE FAILURES, I FELT IT WAS IMPORTANT TO BRING THIS INCIDENT TO THE NHTSA'S ATTENTION. MANY THANKS. *AK
IN REFERENCE TO THE FOLLOWING RECALL: NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER : 04V096000 ONE ADDITIONAL PROBLEM SHOULD BE NOTED. I HAVE A 2000 VW JETTA WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION AND WHEN THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FAILS, AS IT DID ON MY CAR AT THE END OF LAST YEAR, THE SHIFTER CANNOT BE MOVED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION. THIS EFFECTIVELY LEAVES THE VEHICLE IMMOBILIZED AND THE OWNER NEEDING A TOW. MY AIR CONDITIONER WENT OUT ON MY 2000 VW JETTA. I FIGURED IT WAS SOMETHING SIMPLE. I TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THAT THE COMPRESSOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THEY SAID IT WAS GOING TO COST $1,400.00+ TO FIX IT! I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW SOMETHING THIS MAJOR COULD HAPPEN ON A CAR THAT IS ONLY 3 YEARS OLD!
THE ENTIRE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY IN MY 2000 JETTA 2.0L NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AFTER 2 YEARS OF OWNING THE NEW VEHICLE AT 17,000 MILES. IT WAS REPLACED BUT I HAD TO PAY THE DEALER $1,700.00 WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BECAUSE DEALER SAID IT WAS ABUSE AND IT WAS AWARE ITEM. TODAY AT 24,000 MILES THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY BLEW OUT AGAIN AND I STILL HAVE NOT HERD FROM THE DEALER.*AK
PROBLEM WITH ENGINE CONTROL MODULE WHICH CAUSED ELECTRICAL FAILURE THROUGHOUT VEHICLE, IN PARTICULAR, DISABLED ALL DOOR LOCKING SYSTEMS, TRUNK AND GAS DOOR BUTTONS, OVERHEAD LIGHTS AND HEATING/COOLING PANNEL LIGHTS. THIS CAUSED SERIOUS ISSUE AS OWNER WAS UNABLE TO MANUALLY OPEN GAS DOOR TO FILL VEHICLE DUE TO BUTTON ON THE DOOR BEING DIABLED AND WAS UNABLE TO SET VEHICLE ALARM SYSTEM DUE TO LOCKING SYSTEM BEING DISABLED. ISSUE WAS TRACED TO COMFORT COVENIENCE MODULE, AND TRACED TO MAIN WIRING HARNESS THAT WAS CAUSING A SHORT AND BLOWN FUSES. TO MERELY FIND AND DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM TOOK DEALER OVER 11 HOURS TO REPLACE $2.88 WORTH OF PARTS---AN EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF TIME. VOLKSWAGON USA STANDS BY DEALER AND REFUSED ASSISTANCE EVEN THOUGH CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT REPAIR TIME SEEMED EXTREMELY EXCESSIVE IN NATURE. HAVE SEEN SIMILAR COMPLAINTS REGARDING VW ELECTRICAL SYSTEM ISSUES AND WILL BE FILING COMPLAINTS WITH OAG'S IN MA AND NH.*AK
FRONT WINDOW ON DRIVER'S SIDE FELL INTO DOOR... POWER WINDOW SWITCH FAILED TO BRING IT BACK UP... MADE HORRIFIC GRINDING SOUND... ONLY 46,000 MILES ON CAR. *AK
BRAKE SENSOR FAILED. EPC LIGHT ACTIVATED AND CAR FAILED TO SHIFT FROM PARK. MECHANICAL BRAKE ON TRANSMISSION FAILED TO RECOGNIZE BRAKE WAS DEPRESSED. FAULTY SENSOR REQURED TO BE REPLACED. *AK
ALL MY TRANSMISSION MOUNT BOLTS HAVE FAILED. THE RIGHT MOUNT BOLTS FAILURE WAS NOTED WHEN HAVING MY TIMING BELT REPLACED AT 60K. THE FRONT MOUNT BOLTS WERE NOTED JUST PRIOR TO THAT WHEN I HEARD NOSES THAT SOUNDED LIKE MY CLUTCH WAS FAILING. IN THIS CASE THE FRONT BOLT HAD BEEN BROKEN. THE LEFT SIDE FAILURE JUST OCCURED, LEADING TO MY ENGINE TO DROP OUT AS I WAS MOVING. THE RESULT OF ONE BROKEN BOLT AND ONE DETHREADED BOLT, I'M NOT SURE WHAT ORDER THIS HAPPENED. I AM LUCKY THAT I WAS NOT KILLED AS I WAS GOING SLOW WHEN IT HAPPENED. *AK

MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR FAILED AT LEAST 6 TIMES IN THE PAST 60,000 MILES, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL. CONSUMER DISCUSSED THIS WITH VOLKSWAGEN, AND ASKED MANUFACTURER FOR AN EXTENDED WARRANTY. HOWEVER, VOLKSWAGEN WAS NOT LISTENING. *AK THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT UP/DOWN LEVER SPRING BROKE. THE MICRO SWITCH FAILED AND AS A RESULT THE TRUNK LIGHT AND GAS LIGHT ON THE DASH WERE INOPERATIVE. 2000 VW JETTA TDI- TURBO DOES NOT APPEAR TO WORK FOR PAST 6-8 MONTHS. THIS CAUSES THE CAR TO SLOW DOWN SIGNIFICANTLY ON ANY HILLS, INCLUDING ON ENTRANCE RAMPS, WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE ON MERGE WITH TRAFFIC. DEALERSHIP UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE, BUT HAS OFFERED EXPENSIVE REPAIRS INCLUDING REPLACING MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, SOME TYPE OF VALVE IN THE TURBO, FOR EXAMPLE. ALSO NOTED IS THE VEHICLE CAN INTERMITTENTLY PROVIDE SOME DIESEL BOOST- SEEMS ONLY WHEN THE GAS TANK IS FULL. AND THE FUEL FILLER NECK INTERIOR DOOR HAS BROKEN OFF SOMETIME IN THE PAST YEAR. VW JETTA TDI- THE TURBO HASN'T BEEN WORKING. APPARENTLY, THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH A CCV (CRANKCASE VENT) SYSTEM AND AN EGR (EXHAUST GAS RECIRCULATION) SYSTEM. OILY FUMES FROM THE CCV SYSTEM COMBINE WITH CARBON PARTICLES FROM THE EGR SYSTEM TO FORM A BLACK STICKY TAR IN THE INTAKE SYSTEM. THIS EVENTUALLY STARTS RESTRICTING THE AMOUNT OF AIRFLOW INTO THE ENGINE, RESULTING IN GRADUAL POWER LOSS AS THE VEHICLE AGES AND THE INTAKE CLOGGING BECOMES WORSE. THIS IS APPARENTLY PREVENTABLE BY ADJUSTING THE INTAKE AIR VOLUME OF 370 MG/STROKE USING A COMPUTER TO REPROGRAM THE EGR. REPLACING THE MANIFOLD & EGR IS AN EXPENSIVE PROPOSITION THAT IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY.*AK
