ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON, ENGINE CODES DETERMINE A FAULTY MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. *AK
AT 60MPH VEHICLE CRASHED, AND PASSENGER'S SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY. CAUSE UNKNOWN. DEALER NOTIFIED.*AK
DRIVERS SIDE POWER FRONT WINDOW FELL INTO THE DOOR BECAUSE OF FAULTY POWER WINDO REGULATOR. *AK
THE WINDOW FELL IN WHEN I WENT TO ROLL IT DOWN. SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN IN FOR OTHER PROBLEMS TO THE DEALER AND EVERY TIME THERE ARE ATLEAST 4-7 PEOPLE WAITING THAT HAD THEIR WINDOW REGULATORS BREAK ALSO.*AK
LOCAL VW AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER INDICATES THAT THIS PROBLEM IS COMMON ON THE MAKE AND MODEL. THEY INDICATE THAT WE SHOULD EXPECT TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM AGAIN, ON BOTH DOORS. THE REPAIR COST $300 EACH TIME. INTERNET RESEARCH SHOW THAT SOME VW SERVICE CENTERS REPLACE THE PART AT NO COST. OURS DID NOT. *AK
CHECK ENGINE LIGHT (MLI) CAME ON. CHECKED ENGINE OIL AND FOUND TO BE NEARLY TWO QUARTS LOW. REFILLED AND CALLED DEALERSHIP. DELAERSHIP REPLACED O2 SENSOR - INDICATED THAT OIL CONSUMPTION OF THIS AMOUNT WAS UNUSUAL AND SHOULD BE TRACKED. SEVERAL MONTHS LATER, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, CHECKED OIL AND WAS NEARLY TWO QUARTS LOW. TOOK TO DEALERSHIP, TWEAKED ECM SETTINGS AND FIXED THE PROBLEM. NEW SERICE MANAGER CLAIMS THAT HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION IS TYPICAL WITH THIS ENGINE (NOTICE - VERY DIFFERENT RESPONSE FROM FIRST ENCOUNTER). TWO DAYS LATER, WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME BACK ON. I HAVE AN APPPOINMENT WITH DEALER ON FRIDAY. CAR IS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY (2 YEARS) AND HAS ONLY 15K MILES ON IT.*JB
DURING REGULAR SERVICE DEALER ASK FOR REPLACE REAR BRAKE. THEY SAID - REAR ROTOR WARPED AND PADS WORN. THEY CHARGE - BRAKPADSET $55, BRAKE DISC $100 AND LABOR $210. SO TOTAL $370.95. AND THIS IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. I USE CAR IN NOT MOUNTAIN AREA AND AVERAGE SPEED ABOUT 35-50 MILES PER HOUR. *AK

THIS MANUAL TRANSMISSION FROM DAY ONE HAS HAD CLEAR TROUBLES ENGAGING INTO REVERSE WITHOUT ENGAGING REVERSE FIRST, ALSO HAS PROBLEMS SHIFTING BETWEEN 1ST & 2ND GEARS IN HIGHER RPM RANGES 3500 RPM AND ABOVE...ALWAYS GRINDS WHILE SHIFTING. *AK
THERE IS A SPRING UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT OF MY 2000 VW JETTA THAT HAS BECOME DETATCHED AND FALLEN OFF. WHEN YOU ACCELERATE OR BRAKE, THE SEAT SHIFTS BACKWARDS OR FORWARDS. WHEN I TOOK THE CAR TO THE LOCAL VW DEALER FOR SERVICE, THE TECHNICIAN, WITHOUT HESITATION, SAID THAT VW DOES NOT REPLACE THE SPRING, BUT HAS TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE SEAT AT A COST OF $500+ DOLLARS. HIS RAPID RESPONSE LEADS ME TO BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH VWS. I THINK IT IS AN UNSAFE CONDITION. *AK
FOR A NEWER CAR THIS VOLKSWAGEN HAS BEEN VERY PROBLEMATIC. ON THREE OCCASIONS AFTER STARTING THE CAR THE ENGINE WOULD MAKE A NOTICEABLE SPUTTERING NOICE AND SHAKING LIKE IT WAS STRUGGLING TO KEEP RUNNING. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON ACCOMPANIED BY A SULFUROUS SMELL AND BLUISH EXHAUST. UPON ATTEMPTING TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE, AFTER IDLING FOR A WHILE, THE CAR WOULD STALL AND NOT RESTART. USUALLY WITHIN AN HOUR TO A DAY LATER IT WOULD START AGAIN ONLY AFTER REVING THE ENGINE TO HIGH RPMS FOR ABOUT 5 MINUTES. I CONTACTED THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME IT OCCURED (TOO BUSY TO SEE MY CAR) THEY THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE MOISTURE IN THE ENGINE. THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO OCCUR AFTER OR AROUND RAINY/SNOWY WEATHER. I HAD A TUNE UP RECENTLY AND THE CAR STILL FEELS LIKE IT MAY STALL WHEN IT IS IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT OR IN THE DRIVEWAY. THIS IS UNACCEPABLE FOR SUCH A NEW CAR. AMONG OTHER PROBLEMS I HAD THE INDASH CD PLAYER REPLACED TWICE BECAUSE OF DEFECT AND THE FUSES THAT ILLUMINATE THE TEMP/RADIO CONTROLS REPLACE TWICE ALL WITHIN THE FIRST MONTH OF OWNERSHIP DUE TO MALFUNCTION.*AK
WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED THE VEHICLE VIBRATES AND SUDDENLY TAKES OFF FASTER THAN NORMAL. THERE IS A SMELL OF SULFUR. TOOK TO DEALER AND THE DEALER STATED THE IGNITION COILS ARE FAULTY. DEALER IS REPLACING WITH THE SAME DESIGN COIL. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY FURTHER INFORMATION. PH

AIR BAG ON REAR PASSENGER DOOR DID NOT DEPLOY UPON IMPACT. VEHICLE WAS HIT BY TWO VEHICLES DRIVING 55-60MPH AND WAS TOTALLED. DEALER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.*AK

TOOK VEHICLE TO AMOSKEAG EUROPEAN AUTO FOR DIAGNOSIS OF AIR BAG LIGHT FOUND TO BE AN INTERNAL FAULT,(EITHER WIRING OR BAG ITSELF CAME UP WITH 10 CODES) BROUGHT TO DEALER AND CONFIRMED AN INTERNAL FAULT WITH BAG ITSELF! HAD TO REPLACE PASS. SIDE FRONTAL AIRBAG OUT OF MY OWN POCKET AT A COST OF OVER $490.00 DUE TO BEING OUT OF WARRANTY BECAUSE OF MILAGE. I DONT FEEL THAT A 1 YR OLD CAR SHOULD HAVE AN AIR BAG PROBLEM!! OBVIOUSLY THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THE AIR BAGS IN THESE VEHICLES AND I THINK THAT CONSUMERS SHOULD BE INFORMED ABOUT THIS, A RECALL ISSUED, AND ALL OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES REIMBERSED TO CONSUMERS THAT HAVE HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET EXPENSES DUE TO A WELL KNOW (DEALER / MANUFACTUER KNOWN) PROBLEM! ALL THEY CAN SAY IS THAT ITS OUT OF WARRANTY IF YOU WANT IT FIXED YOU HAVE TO PAY. I DONT FIND THAT TO BE A FAIR PRACTICE AT ALL! ANY HELP / INFO. WHILE DRIVING, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT FLASHED AND THEN STAYED ON, FOLLOWED BY THE VEHICLE SPUTTERING. THEN IT STOPPED ACCELERATING. THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST, IN WHICH THE FAILURE WA A FAILED IGNITION COIL. THE IGNITION COIL HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE, BUT THE FAILURE HAS RECURRED. THIS FAILURE OCCURS EVERY 20,000 MILES. THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT INDICATE WHAT WAS CAUSING THE FAILURE. *JB

ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON DEC 01. TOOK CAR TO DEALER AND CODE FOR GLOW PLUGS WAS DISCOVERED. WAS INFORMED THAT THIS WAS NOT THE PROBLEM WITH MY VEHICLE, AND REPAIRS WERE NOT MADE. CODE PULLED UP AGAIN BY 2 OTHER VOLKSWAGEN MECHANICS, NOT FIXED UNTIL 7/02 AFTER THE DEALER CONCLUDED THAT THE ENGINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.*AK
REPLACED REAR BRAKE LIGHT 4 TIMES; EMERGENCY FLASHER & TURN SIGNALS FAIL TO WORK RANDOMLY. TWICE HAD REAR BRAKE PADS REPLACED; ROTORS TURNED SECOND TIME -- TOTAL COST $550. REPEATED SENSOR FAILURES -- KNOCK SENSOR, MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR, COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR; INDUCTION COIL FAILURE & VEHICLE IMBOLIZED. DRIVER MIRROR REPAIRED TWICE; PASSENGER P/WINDOW STUCK DOWN; DRIVER WINDOW LOCK TWICE; SEAT BELT CRACKED
VW KNOWS THAT THIS IS A JUNK WINDOW REGULATOR, PLENTY OF FOLKS HAVE THIS PROBLEM. IT'S UNSAFE TO HAVE WINDOW PROBLEMS, ESPECIALLY WITH A NEW CAR.*AK
MY CAR IS NIGHTMARE OF FAILURES. CRUISE CONTROL LIGHT (DEALER CLAIMS THE CAR DOESNT HAVE ONE - BUT YOU CAN SEE IT IF YOU USE A FLASHLIGHT AT AN OBLIQUE ANGLE) FAILURE, ABS MODULE SWITCH FAILURE (ACCORDING TO DEALER) CAUSING CRUISE CONTROL TO UNEXPECTEDLY DISENGAGE. I ALSO LEARNED FROM OTHER MOTORISTS THAT THE SAME SWITCH CONTROLS BRAKE LIGHT ILLUMINATION (ALL BULBS AND OTHER SIGNAL LIGHTS WORK). FUEL INJECTION MODULE OVER INJECTED GAS CAUSING EXCESSIVE PRESSURE. RELIEF VALVE FAILED TO OPEN CAUSING TURBO OVERPRESSURE TO +120PSI. FAILURE CAUSED HOSES TO BLOW SENDING HOSE CLAMPS AS PROJECTILES. THIS WEEK, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW UNEXPECTEDLY DROPPED INTO THE DOOR. DEALER HAS LITERALLY TAPED THE WINDOW UP UNTIL A PART ARRIVES. DEALER ADMITS TO MFG DESIGN DEFECT - NO VOLUNTARY RECALL. NO DEALERS WILL VOLUNTARILY REPLACE CLIPS UNTIL THEY FAIL. VOLKSWAGEN POSITION IS THAT THEY KNOW THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW, BUT WONT REPLACE KNOWN BAD CLIPS UNTIL THERE IS A FAILURE. WINDOW FAILURE COULD CAUSE OBJECTS (STONES KICKED UP BY TIRES OF OTHER CARS) TO HIT PASSENGERS. INFANT / CHILD SAFETY RISK. WINDOW INTEGRITY QUESTIONABLE IN AN ACCIDENT IF IT FAILS WHEN DRIVING 15MPH. HELP!*AK
MODULE CONTROLLING ABS BRAKES- SWITCH FAILED, CAUSING REAR BRAKE LIGHTS AND ABS TO STOP FUNCTIONING. NORMAL LIGHTS (NOT BRAKE LIGHTS) CONTINUED TO FUNCTION. BULBS (INCLUDE BRAKE LIGHTS) WERE FINE. BRAKES WORKED (NO ABS) BUT NO ONE BEHIND ME COULD TELL IF I WAS BRAKING. LEARNED OF ISSUE FROM PASSING MOTORIST.*AK
WINDOW REGULATOR FAILED 35 MILES FROM HOME. FAILURE WAS SUDDEN AND RAPID. IF THIS HAD OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING, THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. *AK
1) VEHICLE COMFORT MODULE SPONTANEOUSLY FAILED. THIS HAPPENED WHILE DRIVING THE CAR! 2) A MAJORITY OF THE FUNCTIONS CONTROLLED BY THIS MODULE FAILED, INCLUDING ALARM GOING OFF WHILE DRIVING, FUEL CAP RELEASE NOT WORKING, DOOR LOCKS, TRUNK RELEASE, ETC. ALL FAILED. IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY, THE ALARM WENT OFF AND THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO TO TURN IT OFF. CALLED EMERGENCY ROADSIDE SERVICE AND THEY SHOWED ME HOW TO DISABLE THE ALARM (TURN THE KEY IN THE DOOR LOCK ON AND OFF SEVERAL DOZEN TIMES). HOWEVER NONE OF THE OTHER FUNCTIONS WORKED, MOST SERIOUS WAS THAT THE FUEL CAP COULD NOT BE OPENED. I HAD TO GET THIS FIXED BEFORE I RAN OUT OF FUEL! 3) TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER. THEY REPLACED THE COMFORM MODULE AND MOST OF THE SYSTEM OPERATIONAL AGAIN. 4) HOWEVER OVER TIME, ONE BY ONE VARIOUS SYSTEMS STARTING MALFUNCTIONING AGAIN. WITHIN WEEKS, ONE OF THE REAR DOOR LOCKS WOULDN'T CLOSE AUTOMATICALLY. LATER THE TRUNK RELEASE DIDN'T WORK WITH THE REMOTE. THEN THE INTERIOR LIGHTS WOULDN'T GO OFF AUTOMATICALLY. OTHER DOOR LOCKS STOPPED FUNCTIONING, ETC. 5) SINCE THE CAR WAS OUT OF WARRANTY AND THESE WERE NOT CRUCIAL FUNCTIONS, I LIVED WITH THESE FAILURES. BUT NOW I'M UNCOMFORTABLE DRIVING THE CAR, NOT KNOWING WHERE AGAIN IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, EVERYTHING STOPS WORKING AGAIN. 6) I CALLED VOLKSWAGEN AND DESCRIBED THIS. THEY SAID I WOULD HAVE TO GO TO A DEALER TO HAVE THE PROBLEM DIAGNOSED AND FIXED AT MY OWN COST. THEY SAID THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, THEY COULD NOT HELP FIX THIS. I ARGUED THAT THIS WAS A CORE COMPONENT THAT FAILED - NOT DUE TO WEAR AND TEAR OR MISUSE, BUT THEY STILL SAID SORRY!*AK
BOTH WINDOW REGULATORS HAVE FAILED AND I THINK ITS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT BECAUSE I KNOW ANOTHER VW OWNER WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THIS SAME FAILURE. I TRIED TO GET IT FIXED AT A VW DEALERSHIP BUT THEY REFERRED ME TO A GLASS SHOP/INDEPENDENT SHOP BECAUSE OF THE WAIT-TIME TO GET IT FIXED. IN ADDITION THE A/C FAILED BEFORE I BOUGHT IT FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER AND AGAIN FAILED 6 MONTHS AFTER I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE OF DIFFERENT OWNERSHIP I COULD'T CLAIM THE WARRANTY COVERAGE ON THE PARTS.*AK
PIECE THAT IS LOCATED UNDERNEATH VEHICLE FALLS DOWN AND DRAGS ON GROUND, AND EVENTUALLY BREAKS. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS.*AK
PLASTIC HANDLE THAT WAS USED TO CHANGE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SIDEVIEW MIRRORS BROKE FREQUENTLY. DEALER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. PLEASE PROVIDE FURTHER DETAILS.*AK
VEHICLE PULLED TO THE SIDE WHEN HITTING BUMPS AND SEEMED TO HIT BUMPS HARDER, CONSUMER TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHO TIGHTENED THE FRONT END, HOWEVER THE PROBLEMS STILL EXIST. *SLC
TIRE INITIALLY PUNCTURED MID TREAD. RAPID LOSS OF AIR OCCURRED FOLLOWED BY THE IMMEDIATE SEPARATION OF THE SIDE WALLS (BOTH SIDES) FROM BOTH THE BEAD AND TREAD (TIRE IN 3 PIECES). FAILURE CAUSED LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL ON HIGHWAY. CAUSED DAMAGE TO STRUT, ANTILOCK BREAK CABLE AND VARIOUS AREAS BODY PARTS.*AK (DOT NUMBER: M3TACXYX46 TIRESIZE: 195/65R15)
ON SEPT 14, 2001, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING THROUGH DRIVE IN AT MCDONALD'S. SHE PRESSED THE DRIVER WINDOW POWER BUTTON AND THE WINDOW MALFUNCTIONED. THE WINDOW WENT DOWN BUT WOULD NOT GO UP. THE DEALER REPLACE LEFT FRONT WINDOW REGULATOR AT NO CHARGE TO ME. ON JUNE 7, 2002, MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON FORT BENNING THROUGH THE SECURITY GATE. THE WINDOW MALFUNCTION. IT WENT DOWN AND WOULD GO UP. I TOOK THE JETTA TO THE DEALER. I SPOKE WITH VW'S CUSTOMER RELATIONS OFFICE, 1.800.822.8987, REF # 20166271. SINCE MY CAR WAS 971 MILES OVER THE 12 MONTH WARRANTY, VW WOULD ONLY PAY 50% AND I HAD TO PAY 50%. IT IS MY OPINION THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. THERE WAS A LADY AT THE DEALERSHIP WITH THE SAME PROBLEM.*AK
DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S SIDE POWER WINDOWS REGULATOR BROKE. WINDOW FELL INTO THE DOOR. UNABLE TO WIND THE WINDOWS UP.*AK THE FIRST OCCURRENCE WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE SECOND OCCURENCE WAS 75 PERCENT COVERAGE. DEALER REPLACED WINDOW REGULATOR. *TT
AFTER A 60 MILE HIGHWAY TRIP, THE CLUTCH WENT TO THE FLOOR AND HAD TO BE MANUALLY RETURNED TO HOME POSITION. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR OUT OF GEAR, BUT UNABLE TO PUT IT IN GEAR. I NOTICED THE CLUTCH PEDAL HEIGHT WAS LOWER THAN THE BRAKE SO I PULLED THE CLUTCH PEDAL BACK OUT WITH MY FOOT. AFTER THAT, THE CLUTCH BEHAVED RELATIVELY NORMALLY THOUGH A LITTLE SOFT. THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN ON MY RETURN TRIP 9/3/01. THE CLUTCH PERFORMS ACCEPTABLY DURING NORMAL CITY DRIVING.*AK

DATE OF FIRST KNOWN PROBLEM PROVIDED. HAVE ALREADY BEEN THROUGH BBB AUTOLINE REGARDING MOST OF THE DEFECTS LISTED AND THOUGHT MANUFACTURER HAD FIXED THEM. NOW VEHICLE HAS THE SAME PROBLEMS PLUS MORE. ALL WORK BEING DONE AT DEALERSHIP IS AT MANUFACTURER'S EXPENSE, HOWEVER, THIS CAR IS A MAJOR INCONVENIENCE DUE TO UNRELIABILITY. ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS AREN'T SOLVED WITH REPLACED WIRING HARNESSES, UNSAFE DOOR HINGES AND WINDOW REGULATORS MAKE FOR HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS, AIRBAG SENSOR PROBLEMS, AND QUICK TO WEAR OUT REAR BRAKES ARE ALL VERY DANGEROUS DEFECTS FOR A NEW CAR OWNER TO SUFFER WITH. WINDOW REGULATOR BROKE 3 TIMES AND I HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS A "BAD PART"- AND VW IS NOT DOING ANYTHING TO FIX IT.
THE FRONT PASSENGER DOOR WAS OPENED WHILE THE DRIVER WAS LOWERING THE PASSENGER WINDOW, WITH A 'POP' THE WINDOW FELL INTO THE DOOR. THE DEALER WOULD NOT COVER THE $300 COST BECAUSE IT WAS OUT OF WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. *AK
MY FRUSTRATION AND FEAR AT THE FACT THAT MY BRAKE SWITCH HAS FAILED TWICE, MY BATTERY HAS DIED 3 TIMES WHILE WITH THE DEALER, AND MY BRAKES SEIZED WHILE DRIVING ON A MAJOR ROAD AND MY ALARM GOES OFF CONSTANTLY, IS ONLY COMPOUNDED BY THE FACT THAT VW HAS NOT ONE EXPLAINATION FOR WHY ANY OF THIS IS HAPPENING. TO TELL ME EVERYTHING IS "TESTING" FINE CERTAINLY ADDS TO THIS FRUSTRATION BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN FIX WHEN NOTHING IS "WRONG." TO THAT I SAY, O.K. THEN, GIVE THIS CAR TO YOUR LOVED ONE TO DRIVE AND WE'LL SEE HOW SAFE YOU FEEL. ABSURD -- WILL IS TAKE DEATHS FOR SOMEONE TO DO SOMETHING?
