VEHICLE SUFFERED A LOST OF POWER WHEN CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATES.*MR ON MARCH 7 2002 UNIVERSITY VW DISCOVERED A DEFECTIVE AIRFLOW METER. THE WINDSHIELD WAS REPLACED FOR A CRACKED RAIN DRAIN. THE BRAKE SERVO WAS CHANGED FOR A PIN HOLE AIR LEAK. CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THE GLOW PLUG HARNESS MIGHT BE THE CAUSE AS TO WHY THE BRAKE LIGHTS COME ON. THE HAZARD SWITCH SWITCHED ON AND OFF DISTRESSING OTHER DRIVERS BEHIND. REPLACED THE HAZARD RELAY SWITCH (ON THE DASH) BY MYSELF. BACK BRAKE PAD WORE DOWN TO THE RIVETS. VEHICLE OVERHEATED ON 3 OCCASIONS HAD PRESSURE TEST AND THERMOSTAT CHANGED AND PROBLEM STILL EXIST.*TS *JB
THIS JETTA, LIKE MANY OTHER OWNERS REPORT, BURNS AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL. CONTACTED DEALER, MANUFACTURER. BURNS 1 QT PER 1000 MILES. RIDICULOUS. THE MANUFACTER REPORTS THIS IS "NORMAL". THIS IS A COVER-UP FOR A BIGGER DEFECT IN THIS MODEL.*AK
MY FIRST AND SECOND GEARS HAVE BEEN SPORADICALLY GRINDING EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR. THREE TIMES THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T HEARD IT. FOURTH TIME THEY HEARD IT, BUT WOULDN'T FIX IT BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T HEAR IT WHEN I RETURNED FOR THE SERVICE. *MR

MY PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOW FAILED. THE WINDOW COLLAPSED INTO THE DOOR AND WOULDN'T OPERATE CORRECTLY AGAIN. THIS IS A DRIVING HAZARD, PARTICLUARLY WHEN COVERED BY PLASTIC UNTIL REPAIRED. *AK

I HAVE A 2000 VW JETTA GLS AND HAVE HAD SEVERAL SENSOR DEFECTS TIME AFTER TIME FROM 2001 UNTIL THE PRESENT 2005, IN WHICH I HAVE COME OUT OF POCKET ON 4 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. THESE PROBLEMS INCLUDE THE MASS AIR FLOW, OXYGEN SENSOR, AND COOLANT TEMP SENSOR. *JB
THIS CAR HAS LITERALLY COME UNSCREWED SINCE I PURCHASED IT 2.5 YEARS AGO-PARTS INSIDE AND OUT! MOST RECENTLY THE AXLE "CAME UNSCREWED" FOR NO REASON AND THE BOLTS SNAPPED. THE WINDOWS HAVE MALFUNCTIONED AND THE REAR SUSPENSION HAD TO BE SCREWED BACK TOGETHER SHORTLY AFTER I BOUGHT IT. THE PLASTIC COVERING UNDERNEATH ALSO FELL OFF FOR NO REASON-ALSO WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS HAVE COME UNSCREWED TWICE AND CEASED TO FUNCTION ONCE ON THE HIGHWAY AT HIGH SPEED DURING A RAIN STORM. THE GLOVE COMPARTMENT AND CUP HOLDERS HAVE ALL FALLEN OUT. I BOUGHT THIS CAR NEW 2 1/2 YEARS AGO AND I KNOW FEAR FOR MY LIFE EVERY TIME I GET INTO IT. I HAVE REPORTED THIS TO BOTH THE DEALER AND TO VOLKSWAGEN. NEITHER HAVE EXPRESSED ANY CONCERN WHATSOEVER. MY 2000 VW JETTA WITH 2.0 LITER ENGINE IS SUFFERING SAME FATE AS MANY OTHERS, EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I FOLLOWED MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS BY HAVING MY FIRST OIL CHANGE / SERVICING AT APPROX. 5000 MILES. AT 8190, OIL LIGHT FLASHED AND I STOPPED AT A GAS STATION...DIPSTICK WAS DRY. ADDED 2 FULL QUARTS OF OIL TO BRING BACK TO NORMAL. VW HAS BEGUN AN OIL CONSUMPTION TEST ON MY CAR.

WHILE DRIVING CAR ON 06/08/02, DRIVER SIDE POWER WINDOW REGULATOR BROKE AND WINDOW FILL INTO DOORFRAME. I TOOK CAR TO WINDOW REPAIR SHOP. TECH AT SHOP SAID THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH VW'S AND SUGGESTED I CHECK WITH DEALER ON REPLACEMENT. CAR IS PAST WARRANTY PERIOD. THE CAR HAS 4 POWER WINDOWS. I CAN'T AFFORD NOR SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY FOR A NEW REGULATOR FOR EACH WINDOW. THIS IS A SERIOUS HAZARD ESPECIALLY IF IT HAPPENS WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING.*AK
CRUISE CONTROL FAILURE. LINKED TO ABS BRAKE MODULE - SWITCH FAILURE WHICH ALSO CAUSED REAR BRAKE LIGHTS TO STOP FUNCTIONING.

APROX. DATES. SEVERE HESITATION @ 2000 MILES ON MAY 23 2001. PURCHASED NEW ON APRIL 8 2001. REPAIRED THREE MORE TIMES AFTER FIRST "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT" APPEARED. LIGHT IS ON AT CURRENT TIME AND NOT UNDER WARRANTY ANY MORE. THIS CAR HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF VW SHOP TO MANY TIMES FOR HOW NEW IT IS.
POWER STEERING BEGAN MAKING A WHEEZING, STRAINED NOISE AFTER THE 20000 MILE SERVICE. PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW REGULATOR BROKE AND WINDOW FELL INTO THE DOOR; REGULATOR WAS REPLACED BY WARRANTY.*AK
THIS IS THE FIFTH TIME THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN IN FOR AN AIRBAG FAULT PROBLEM WITH THE TENSION SET TO HIGH IN THE AIRBAG. VWOA HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO APPROPRIATELY FIX THE PROBLEM AND IS PUTTING ME AT RISK DUE TO AIRBAG NOT WORKING CORRECTLY. THE AIRBAG UNIT NOW NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, BUT VWOA DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WHICH IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN FOR THOSE WITH THE PROBLEM. ROYAL MOTORS IS THE DEALER THAT THE VECHICLE IS CURRENTLY BEING WORKED ON. THE VEHICLE HAS ALSO BEEN TO DUBLIN MOTORS IN DUBLIN, CA AND LOEBER MOTORS IN CHICAGO, IL.*AK

A WAX MELTED OUT OF THE DOORS OF THE CAR, THEN A FEW DAYS LATER THE RIGHT PASSENGER WINDOW MADE A SCREACHING NOISE THEN DROPPED DOWN INTO THE DOOR WHILE ELECTRICALLY ROLLING IT UP. ALL OTHER WINDOWS ARE MAKING THE SAME NOISE SO I CAN'T USE THEM IN FEAR I THEY TOO WILL FALL DOWN INTO THE DOOR. SUN ROOF COVER CAME OFF THE TRACK WHILE SHUTTING IT. THE LEVER THAT YOU PUSH TO OPEN THE ARM REST POPPED OFF WHILE OPENING IT. THE DRINK HOLDER FIRST KEPT STICKING INSIDE THE CONSUL, THEN IT SLOWLY BROKE APART. THE DEALERSHIP IS GOING TO CHARGE ME HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO FIX THESE THINGS THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE BROKE IN THE FIRST PLACE. MY WARRANTY EXPIRED AFTER ONLY 24000 MILES. MY COOLANT (WATER) PUMP JUST BROKE LAST WEEK, BUT THEY FIXED IT BECAUSE IT WAS COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. THAT SHOULDN'T HAVE NEEDED REPAIR EITHER. I'M IN NEED OF HELP AND I DON'T LIKE THE WAY THIS DEALERSHIP IS TREATING ME. THIS CAR IS AN EXPENSIVE PIECE OF JUNK. I'M WAITING FOR THE NEXT PROBLEM TO HAPPEN. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
WHILE DRIVING 45 TO 50 MPH AND WITH NO PRIOR WARNING VEHICLE LOST SPEED TO AROUND 20 MPH. CONTACTED DEALER. *AK THE DEALER REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION TWICE BUT THE CONSUMER THINKS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM WAS NOT THE TRANSMISSION. *YH
ON MARCH 19, 2001, I PARKED THE ABOVE MENTIONED JETTA IN A PARKING SPACE IN FRONT OF A RETAIL STORE WHERE THERE WAS A CONCRETE BLOCK TO PREVENT CARS FROM PULLING TOO FAR UP. AS I WAS LEAVING, THE BUMPER WHICH WAS OVERHANGING THE BLOCK WAS PULLED OFF. GOSSETT INITIALLY DIDN'T WANT TO FIX AT N/C SINCE THINGS LIKE THIS WERE NOT COVERED UNDER THEIR NORMAL WARRANTY. THEY SAID THE BUMPER WAS DESIGNED SO IF THERE WAS ANY IMPACT FROM COLLIDING IT WOULD COLLAPSE FOR SAFETY REASONS. THE VOLKSWAGEN OFFICE AGREED TO FIX IT AT N/C. ON 4/109/01, A MR. BRANNON, A GOSSETT REP. CALLED TO SEE IF I WAS SATISFIED. I TOLD HIM THAT I WASN'T BECAUSE IT HAD COME OFF A 2ND TIME. BUT I NEVER HEARD FROM THEM AGAIN ABOUT THIS MATTER.ON 4/09/01, THE BUMPER HAD PULLED OFF A 2ND TIME WHEN PARKED IN A NORMAL PARKING SPACE IN FRONT OF MY MOTHER'S ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY. THIS TIME A NORMAL CURVE WAS THE CULPRIT. ON 4/10, I HAD AN INDEPENDENT BODY SHOP FIX IT. IT HAS COME OFF SLIGHTLY THREE TIMES SINCE WHEN COMING OUT OF 2 DIFFERENT DRIVEWAYS, AND TURNING LEFT ON MY STREET. SINCE THE DAMAGE WAS NOT TO THE EXTEND OF THE FIRST 2, I WAS ABLE TO PUSH THE BUMPER UP AND REATTACH THE FEW SCREWS HOLDING IT TOGETHER. THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN COUNTLESS OTHER INCIDENTS IF NOT FOR THE FACT THAT I HAVE DRIVEN IT GINGERLY. I WAS TOLD BY AN INDEPENDENT BODY SHOP IN MEMPHIS AND AN AUTHORIZED HONDA/VW BODY SHOP IN COLLEGE PARK, MD THAT THE LOW DESIGN OF THE JETTA, AS WELL AS MANY OTHER CARS, IS SUCH THAT THE BUMPERS ARE EASILY PULLED OFF. THEY SAID THAT THEY SEE THESE BUMPER PROBLEMS. THE BUMPERS ARE POORLY ENGINEERED. AT THE TIME OF THE ORGINAL PROBLEM, I FOUND ON THE NHTSA BOARD THE FOLLWING INCIDENTS OF THE SAME THING 10/09/00 ODI ID#735047, 01/28/01 ODI ID#741248, 09/22/00 ODI ID#733361 ALL HAD THE SAME PROBLEM I REPORTED TO YOUR AGENCY. AND THERE WERE MANY MORE REPORTED ON YOUR SITE THEN. THE JETTA GETS WONDERFUL SAFETY SCORES, BUT A BUMPER THAT COMES OFF SO EASILY IS A DANGER TO ME. IT IS LUDICROUS.*AK
I HAD A CAR ACCIDENT. A CAR HIT ME ON MY LEFT SIDE AND THE AIRBAG DIDNT POP OUT THEN I HIT TO OTHER CARS BECAUSE I LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IN NON OF THE HITS ANY AIR BAGS IN THE FRONT POP OUT EITHER.*AK
THE FIRST DEFECT WAS AT NIGHT, BUT WHEN THE DRIVERS WINDOW BROKE, IT WAS POURING DOWN RAIN. VERY HARD TO SEE AND DRIVE WHEN THE RAIN IS SOAKING YOU.
ENGINE CHECK LIGHT AND EMISSIONS WORK SHOP WARNING KEEPS COMING ON. EACH TIME I TAKE THE CAR IN THE DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THAT ITS A DIFFERENT REASON THE LIGHT IS COMING ON. TO DATE THEY HAVE MADE THREE DIFFERENT REPAIRS TO THE CAR AND NONE OF THEM HAVE WORKED. I RECEIVED THE LAST CHECK ENGINE/EMISSIONS WORKSHOP ON 4/10/01 AND CAR IS IN THE SHOP BEING FIXED.*AKY
THERE HAVE BEEN THREE INSTANCES WHERE THE SAME RIGHT REAR BRAKE PAD HAVE WORN DOWN BEFORE ANY OF THE OTHER BRAKE PAD ON OUR VEHICLE. AT THE TIME WE HAD AN EXTENDED WARRENTY AND CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND THE VEHICLE WARRENTY OWNER THROUGH THE DEALERSHIP. THE WARRENTY OWNER INDICATED THAT IT WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR THEREFORE THEY WOULD NOT COVER IT. WE FOUGHT WITH THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE ISSUE BUT THEY ALSO INDICATED THE SAME THING ALTHOUGH THEY COMMENTED THAT IT WAS VERY UNUSUAL THAT ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM. WE MET ANOTHER CUSTOMER AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP THAT WAS HAVING THE SAME EXACT ISSUE WITH HER VEHICLE AND HAD BROUGHT IT IN FOR REPAIR. WE MENTIONED THIS TO THE SERVICE AGENT BUT IT WAS AGAIN NOT REGARDED AS SOMETHING SIGNIFICANT. THE FOLLOWING YEAR WE HAD THE SAME ISSUE WITH THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AGAIN. WE WENT TO THE SAME DEALERSHIP WITH OUR COMPLIANT AND SHOWED THEM OUR REPAIR ORDER THE YEAR BEFORE AND THEY DID NOT REGARD IT AT ALL. WE HAD THE PROBLEM REPAIR AT PEP BOYS BECAUSE IT WAS GOING TO BE TOO MUCH AT THE DEALERSHIP. WE AGAIN HAD THE PROBLEM A THIRD TIME AND BY THIS TIME OUR EXTENDED WARRENTY WAS OVER AND WE KNEW THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT LISTEN SO WE WENT AHEAD AND REPAIRED THE PROBLEM YET AGAIN. AFTER READING THE OWNERS MANUAL AND SPEAKING WITH A FEW FRIENDS WE DECIDED TO FINALLY REPORT THE ISSUE TO NHTSA AFTER HEARING ABOUT THE TIRE ISSUES WITH SUV'S. THANKS.*AK
VEHICLE WAS HIT ON PASSENGER'S SIDE WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 20 MPH, AND NEITHER AIRBAG DEPLOYED. VEHICLE HAD SIDE AIR BAGS AS WELL. VEHICLE WAS TOTALLED. *AK
I LOST CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AND STRUCK A TREE ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DOOR. DOOR DEFORMATION WAS SEVERE AND NONE OF THE FOUR AIRBAGS WENT OFF. BECAUSE OF THE BLUNT TRAUMA TO MY CHEST AND LOWER BODY, I SUFFERED A COLLAPSED LEFT LUNG, A RUPTURED SPLEEN, A BROKEN SCAPULA, FOUR FRACTURED RIBS AND A SHATTERED PELVIS. MY WIFE WHO WAS IN THE PASSENGER RECIEVED A FRACTURED COLLARBONE BECAUSE OF THE FORCE OF ME COLLIDING INTO HER. I WAS IN INTENSIVE CARE FOR A WEEK AND IN CRITICAL CONDITON FOR FOUR DAYS, MY LEFT LUNG WAS 70% FILLED WITH BLOOD AND I RECIEVED TWO CHEST TUBES AS WELL AS MY RUPTURED SPLEEN WAS REMOVED. I HAVE NOT RECIEVED ALL OF MY BILLS YET AND ALLREADY ALL OF THESE PROCEDURES ARE GOING TO COST OVER $100K.
I FELL THAT I HAVE HAD A LOT OF PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, THE PROBLEMS ARE ON GOING. I HAVE VOICED MY COMPLAINT TO VOLKSWAGEN CUSTOMER SERVICE, THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE MANAGER AND SALES MANAGER. I HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THAT I FEEL THAT MY CAR IS A "LEMON" AS I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS PROBLEMS THAT ARE ONGOING. I DO NOT GET CALLED BACK WHEN THEY SAY THEY ARE GOING TO CALL, THEY POINT FINGERS AT EACH OTHER AND NO RESULTS. THE SALES PERSON/VW DEALERSHIP CONSULTANT OFFERED ME A TRADE IN VALUE OF $15,500 AND A SMALL DISCOUNT ON ANOTHER CAR. I WISH TO SEEK ASSISTANCE IN MAKING MY "LEMON" CAR SITUATION RIGHT. I ALSO HAVE A WRITTEN DOCUMENTAION OF MY EXPERIENCE AND SERVICE HISTORY. I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT MYSELF, AS A CONSUMER, SHOULD BE TREATED IN A MANNER, THAT DISGARDS THE INTEGRETY TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT. WHILE DRIVING COULD HEAR NOISE COMING FROM BOTTOM OF VEHICLE. TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER WHERE THEY REPLACED TRANSMISSION. THEN AGAIN THE, REVERSE WAS NOT WORKING AT THIS TIME, AND TWO TRANSMISSIONS HAD BEEN REPLACED.*AK
WINDOW REGULATOR: FAILED CHECK ENGINE LIGHT: ON
WHEN COMING TO A STOP LIGHT APPLIED BRAKES VEHICLE ACCELERATED FORWARD. PROBLEM OCCURRED DUE TO CLOSE PROXIMITY OF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND THE GAS PEDAL. IT IS POSSIBLE TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AND GAS PEDAL SIMULTANEOUSLY AND ACCELERATE WHILE TRY TO STOP. *AK
ENGINE CHECK LIGHT CAME ON. CAR WAS 14 MONTHS OLD, BUT OUT OF WARRANTY BY MILEAGE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE COOLANT SENSOR FOR $175.00!! NOW TWO MONTHS LATER THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT IS ON AGAIN. THERE APPEARS TO BE WATER/COOLANT IN THE OIL! NOW THE CAR IS ABOUT 16 MONTHS OLD. VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE PRIOR REPAIR, AND DID NOT PAY FOR THE FAILED INTERIOR LIGHTS, EITHER.*AK
WHILE DRIVING ABOUT 70 MPH TRANSMISSION SHIFTED DOWN TO 20 MPH. THEN, CONSUMER HAD TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF ROAD, AND TURN OFF ENGINE. THEN, IT RESTARTED AND WORKED AGAIN . THIS CAUSED ROAD RAGE DUE TO DECELERATION OF TRANSMISSION. *AK

OIL LIGHT CAME ON APPROXIMATELY 3000 MILES AFTER CONSUMER HAD OIL CHANGED IN VEHICLE. PRIVATE MECHANIC INFORMED CONSUMER THAT ENGINE WAS BURNING OIL, AND WAS ABOUT READY TO BLOW UP. THERE WAS A GAP IN BETWEEN PISTONS THAT WERE CAUSING THIS DEFECT. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/ATTACHMENTS. *AK

NUMEROUS ELECTRICAL COMPNENTS HAVE FAILED AND BEEN REPLACED. THE MISFIRING ON ACCELERATION CAUSES CAR TO THRUST FORWARD AFTER APPLYING THE THROTTLE. I CONSIDER THIS TO BE A SAFETY HAZARD, AS I WAS ALMOST STRUCK BY ON-COMING TRAFIC IN AN INTERSECTION.
SEAT BELT EQUIPMENT DID NOT WORK PROPERLY DURING AN ACCIDENT.*MR THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY WHEN THE CONSUMERS VEHICLE WAS HIT ON THE RIGHT PASSENGER SIDE. *PH *JB
WHILE VEHICLE STILL UNDER WARRANTY, BRAKE MALFUNCTION OCURRED. BRAKE PEDAL WOULD BECOME SOFT WHEN PRESSED DOWN ON, SINKING TO FLOORVERY FAST, EMITTING AN AIR RELEASE TYPE SOUND, SIMULAR TO ANTI LOCK BRAKE RELEASE SOUND, BUT WITHOUT THE CONTROLED SPURTS, THE PRESURE RELEASE HAPPENS ALL AT ONCE, CAUSING LOCK UP OF BRAKES. DEALERSHIP WAS NEVER ABLE TO FIX PROBLEM, IT RETURNED AFTER VEHICLE WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND NOW HAPPENS ON MOST WARM DAYS, MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY.*AK
AIR BAG WAS REPAIRED 5 TIMES AND SPIRAL SPRING REPLACED - LIGHT STILL INDICATES MALFUNCTIONING SYSTEM. *AK CONSUMER STATES THAT BRAKE LIGHT WAS INOPERATIVE AND THE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS WERE REPLACED, INSTALLED FRONT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR, INSTALL 6 DISC CD CHANGER, BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND WIRING HARNESS WAR REPLACED. OWNER IS NO LONGER IN POSSESSION OF THE VEHICLE *YD
