WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. BEFORE IT COULD BE PULLED OFF THE ROAD TO SAFETY, THE ENGINE DIED COMPLETELY. THE PASSENGERS HAD TO GET OUT OF THE CAR AND PUSH IT ACROSS THE ROAD AND INTO A PARKING LOT. THE CAUSE OF THE INCIDENT WAS A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP. PROPER MAINTENANCE AND FUELING OF THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN RIGOROUSLY FOLLOWED ON THIS VEHICLE. THE OWNER IS A MECHANICAL ENGINEER AND DIESEL ENGINE ENTHUSIAST. *TR
ON APRIL 19, 2013, TIRE PRESSURE WAS LOW ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. UPON CHECKING THE TIRE A LARGE CRACK WAS NOTICE ON THE INSIDE WALL OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE WAS REPLACED AT OWNER'S EXPENSE OF $177.01 WITH AN ODOMETER READING OF 27293 ON A 2011 VW JETTA TDI. ON JANUARY 4, 2014, THE OWNER NOTICED A LARGE CRACK ON THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT TIRE'S SIDEWALL. THE OWNER CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND NO RECALLS WERE CURRENTLY IN PLACE. THE OWNER SUBMITTED A REQUEST FOR HANKOOK TO PAY FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF ALL TIRE REPLACEMENTS AS THE OWNER FEELS THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE WITH A POTENTIAL TIRE BLOWOUT AND LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. *TR
THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM FAILED IN OUR CAR WHEN WE WERE ON A BUSY CITY STREET. 'ENGINE CONTROL MALFUNCTION' LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND SUDDENLY OUR CAR WAS STALLED. WHEN WE LOOKED IN THE MANUAL IT SAID TO GET THE CAR TO A VW DEALERSHIP ASAP. WE HAD TO HOLD UP TRAFFIC UNTIL THE CAR WAS FINALLY TOWED. NOT ONLY THAT, THIS HAPPENED DURING LATE NIGHT AROUND 10 PM AND ALL THE SERVICE CENTERS WERE CLOSED. AFTER A PAINFUL 2 DAYS WE JUST FOUND OUT THAT OUT HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS A BIG STRUCTURAL DAMAGE WITH THE CAR AND I NO LONGER FEEL SAFE OWNING OR DRIVING IT. *TR
ON A TRIP TO ST. CHARLES, MO ON 28 MAR 2013, AFTER WE PARKED, MY SON NOTICED SEVERE SIDEWALL BREAKS ON THE LEFT FRONT TIRE. HE SAID IT LOOKED LIKE THE TIRE WAS ABOUT TO BLOW. I THOUGHT THAT HE WAS JOKING, BUT LOOKED ANY WAY. WOW. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH SEVERE CONDITION ON ANY TIRE, NOR HAD I EVER EVEN HEARD OF SUCH A CONDITION . THERE WERE NUMEROUS SHORT BREAKS AND LONG BREAKS INCHES LONG ALL AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE SIDEWALL. THE BREAKS WENT ALL THE WAY IN WITH METAL BELTS SHOWING. WE HAD JUST FINISHED DRIVING 200 MILES ON THE INTERSTATE TO GET TO ST CHARLES. I HONESTLY DON'T KNOW HOW WE MADE IT WITHOUT A BLOWOUT AND CRASH. I WENT IMMEDIATELY, AND SLOWLY, TO THE NEAREST TIRE DEALER AND PURCHASED TWO NEW TIRES. I ASKED THEM TO SAVE THE OTHER TIRE SO I MIGHT USE AS A POSSIBLE SPARE SINCE THE TIRES HAD PLENTY OF TREAD LEFT. THEY PUT THE "GOOD" TIRE IN THE TRUNK FOR ME. I LATER LOOKED AT THE "GOOD" TIRE AND FOUND THAT THE INSIDE SIDEWALL WAS EVEN WORSE THAN THE "BAD" TIRE! I FEEL VERY FORTUNATE THAT THESE OE TIRES DIDN'T CAUSE A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT. THE OTHER OE TIRES LOOK OK BUT I WILL BE REPLACING QUICKLY. THESE TIRES ARE HANKOOK OPTIMO H725A TIRES. *TR
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 70 MPH THE ENGINE LOST POWER AND COASTED TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH SEVERAL LIGHTS ON THE DASH FLASHING AND IT APPEARS FROM RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT THE HPFP QUITS AND THE CAR WILL NOT ACCELERATE. THE MOTOR IS A DIESEL TDI. *TR
WHEN THE CAR IS PARKED THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS COME ON UNTIL YOU GO CRANK THE CAR. THE DEALER COMPLETED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND HE SAID EVERYTHING CHECKED OUT OK....THIS IS NOT NORMAL AND MY CONCERN WOULD BE WILL IT EVENTUALLY AFFECT THE BATTERY. *TR
2011 VW JETTA DIESEL AT 70 MPH GOING UP A HILL AND WITHOUT WARNING THE CAR LOST POWER AND SPEED DROPPED MAKING IT UNSAFE TO HAVE TIME TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. THE CARS BEHIND ME HAD TO ALL SLOW WAY DOWN TO LET ME GET OFF THE ROAD. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART. MY MECHANIC COULD NOT START IT AND SAID IT WAS A FUEL PROBLEM BUT COULD NOT FIX IT. VW REPORTED THE CAR STARTED FOR THEM AND THEY RAN OFF AND FOUND FAULT FOR LOW FUEL PRESSURE BUT NO REASON FOR THE PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LAMP ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP EXPLODED DUE TO FUEL CONTAMINATION AND AS A RESULT, THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,000. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH AND APPLYING THE BRAKES IN AN ATTEMPT TO AVOID ANOTHER MOTORIST, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FUEL INJECTOR LINE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 33,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 5 MPH, ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE CONTACT. UPON IMPACT, THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS STRUCK ON THE FRONT END AND WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED A LACERATION TO THE FOREHEAD. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED FOR A CAUSE OF FAILURE. THIS HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE FIRST RECORDED INCIDENT WAS IN MARCH OF 2013. WENT TO THE CAR AND IT WOULD NOT START. IT ACTED LIKE THE ENGINE WAS SEIZED OR A BAD BATTERY. LET IT SIT STARTED RAN LIKE CRAP. FOUND OUT LATER THAT THE CAR WHEN DRIVEN IN COLD TEMPERATURES ACCUMULATES WATER IN THE SYSTEM. FROM READING ONLINE THIS HAS / CAN START A FIRE BECAUSE THE STARTER OVERHEATS. SINCE THE WATER GETS INTO THE CYLINDERS IT CAN CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE. VW DID NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT IN BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT REPEAT THE PROBLEM. SAID I MUST HAVE KILLED THE BATTERY BY LEAVING SOMETHING ON. SINCE THAN IT HAS HAPPENED 4 MORE TIMES I CAN RELATE TO THE CONDITION. IT IS IN THE DEALERSHIP NOW BECAUSE OF IT. THEY COULD NOT GET IT TO REPEAT AND MAY NOT PROVIDE A FIX (ALTHOUGH THE GIVEN FIX DOES NOT 100% FIX IT I WAS TOLD BY A TECH.) *TR
DANGEROUS AND HARROWING CLUTCH/FLYWHEEL FAILURE (NEAR-NEW 2011 JETTA WITH 39,000 MILES) WITHOUT WARNING AT 55 MPH WHEN I DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH PEDAL TO DOWNSHIFT FROM 5TH GEAR WHILE BRAKING, STALLING MY CAR IN TRAFFIC AT SPEED. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. CAR WAS TOWED TO VW DEALERSHIP THAT TODAY TELLS ME THE FLYWHEEL AND CLUTCH WERE DAMAGED WITH REPAIRS ESTIMATED AT $2,500. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE NTSB SITE SHOWS THIS PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED WITH OTHER 2011 JETTA OWNERS. A SEARCH OF THE INTERNET GENERALLY TURNED UP HUNDREDS OF IDENTICAL OR NEAR-IDENTICAL REPORTS OF CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL FAILURES FOR 2006 TO 2013 JETTAS. MANUFACTURER'S RESPONSES HAVE BEEN, ACCORDING TO JETTA OWNERS, VARIED, WITH SOME PEOPLE REPORTING FREE REPAIRS AND OTHER REPORTING LARGE OUT-OF-POCKET COSTS. INTERESTINGLY, CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL FAILURES ARE, ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH (AVAILABLE TO ANYONE WHO CARES TO LOOK FOR IT ONLINE) BEING COVERED BY TECHNICAL BULLETINS IN THE EUROPEAN UNION BUT NOT IN THE UNITED STATES. MY CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN AND MAINTAINED PER MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS, WITH DEALERSHIP WHERE I HAD THE CAR TOWED FOR REPAIRS ACKNOWLEDGING VERBALLY THAT THESE COMPONENTS SHOULD LAST MUCH LONGER. A TECHNICAL BULLETIN ISSUED BY VW IS PAYING FOR SOME FLYWHEEL PARTS UNDER SOME CIRCUMSTANCES BUT NOT FOR ADDITIONAL DAMAGE TO THE CLUTCH THAT OFTEN OCCURS, PER THE DEALERSHIP, WHEN THE FLYWHEEL FAILS. LABOR COSTS ARE NOT COVERED, AND THEY ARE ESTIMABLE. *TR
WE WERE TRAVELING AT 65 MPH ON INTERSTATE 93 APPROX 5 MILES SOUTH OF EXIT 11 IN HOOKSETT, NH NORTHBOUND. THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE LIKE A GUNSHOT. I SWERVED INTO THE LEFT LANE AND BY THE TIME I GOT THE VEHICLE UNDER CONTROL MY WIFE AND I WERE COVERED IN GLASS AND OUR EARS WERE RINGING. WE LOOKED UP AND THE SUN ROOF HAD EXPLODED OUT/UPWARDS FROM THE BEST WE COULD TELL. AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT THE CAR WAS DRY AND IT WAS CLEAR OUT. THERE WAS NO ICE OR SNOW ON THE ROOF. THE WINDOWS WERE ALL CLOSED AND THE SUN SHADE WAS OPEN. THE HEAT WAS NOT ON IN THE VEHICLE AND IT WAS ROUGHLY 40 DEGREES F OUTSIDE. WE IMMEDIATELY GOT OFF THE HIGHWAY AT THE NEXT EXIT (11) AND PULLED INTO A PARK AND RIDE LOT TO INSPECT DAMAGE. AS EXPECTED THE WINDOW BROKE OUTWARDS, WITH APPROX 33% OF THE GLASS MISSING IN A HOLE IN THE MIDDLE, THE REST SHATTERED AND FALLING OFF IF YOU TOUCHED IT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING TO AN EARLY MORNING APPOINTMENT, I NOTICE A BURNING SMELL WITHIN 5 MINUTES OF STARTING THE CAR. I SOON SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER OF THE DASHBOARD. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE CAR. AT THAT POINT I SAW A FLAME APPEARING AT THE FRONT END OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE ROCKER PANEL. PLASTIC AT THE BASE OF THE ROCKER PANEL HAD MELTED AND I COULD SEE ELECTRICAL WIRES. I TRIED TO STAMP OUT THE FIRE, BUT IT WAS GROWING RAPIDLY AND I WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. I GOT OUT OF THE CAR. WITHIN SECONDS, THE FLAMES WERE SEVERAL FEET HIGH. I CLOSED THE DOOR AND CALLED 911. THE FLAMES EVENTUALLY EXTINGUISHED THEMSELVES IN THE CLOSED CABIN. THE FIREFIGHTERS ARRIVED AND OPENED THE DRIVERS DOOR. MOST OF THE DASHBOARD ON THE DRIVERS SIDE, AND THE HEADLINER WERE MELTED. THERE WAS A LOT OF EXPOSED BARE WIRE VISIBLE. THE TEMPERATURE AT THE TIME WAS 34 DEGREES F, AND THIS WAS THE FIRST TRIP OF THE DAY. THE DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT HEATER WAS TURNED ON HIGH, THE HEADLIGHTS WERE ON, AND THE RADIO WAS ON. NO OTHER OPERATOR CONTROLLED ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS WERE ON. THERE HAD BEEN NO PREVIOUS ELECTRICAL INCIDENTS WITH THIS CAR, NOR WERE THERE ANY AFTERMARKET ELECTRICAL ITEMS INSTALLED ON THE CAR. THE WEATHER WAS DRY. THIS JETTA IS A TDI MODEL (DIESEL). *TR
THIS CAR HAS HAD MULTIPLE IGNITION COIL PROBLEMS CAUSING A MISFIRE AND A ROUGH RUMBLING ENGINE. THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE IS GREATLY REDUCE LEAVING YOU VULNERABLE TO CAR ACCIDENTS IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS LIKE PULLING OUT AT AN INTERSECTION. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT WITHIN A YEAR OF IGNITION COILS FAILING. NOW AT 42,000 MILES IT IS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS EXTREMELY TROUBLING NOT BEING ABLE TO MAINTAIN A CONSTANT SPEED WITH A LINE OF TRAFFIC BEHIND ME AND NO WHERE TO PULL OVER. THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY ISSUE AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY VW. *TR
THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, VEHICLE DRIVEN BY 22 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER FOR COLLEGE. 02/05/13, 9332 MILES, AIRBAG SYSTEM WARNING LAMP CAME ON, DEALER REPLACED PASSENGER "SIDE" AIRBAG, CONNECTORS AND WIRES REPAIRED. 06/03/14, 17,960 MILES, AIRBAG SYSTEM WARNING LAMP CAME ON, DEALER CLEARED FAILURE CODE. 06/24/14, 18,520 MILES, AIRBAG SYSTEM WARNING LAMP CAME ON, DEALER REPLACED PASSENGER "FRONT" AIRBAG. 08/12/14, 19,785 MILES, AIRBAG SYSTEM WARNING LAMP CAME ON, DEALER REPLACED PASSENGER "FRONT" AIRBAG AND REPAIRED/MODIFIED WIRING HARNESS. 09/03/14, 20,750 MILES, AIRBAG SYSTEM WARNING LAMP CAME ON, DEALER RAN NEW WIRES FOR T5 CONNECTOR. 09/26/14, 21,870 MILES, AIRBAG SYSTEM WARNING LAMP CAME ON, PROBLEM HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED NET. CONSIDERING REPLACING THIS VEHICLE AS I DON'T BELIEVE IT IS SAFE FOR MY DAUGHTER TO DRIVE DUE TO FAULTY ENGINEERING OF THE AIRBAG CONTROL SYSTEM. *TR
38,875 MILES - TOTAL COLLAPSE OF THE FUEL LINE DUE TO AN INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE TANK FUEL PUMP (HPFP). VW DEALER INSPECTED AND FOUND METAL IN THE FUEL SYSTEM. VW DEALER TESTED THE FUEL IN MY TANK AND IT SHOWED CLEAN DIESEL FUEL WITH NO CONTAMINANTS. VW PAID DEALER TO REPLACED FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS & CLEANED TANK, UNIT IN TANK & HARD LINES. ADAPTED INJECTORS,BLEED FUEL BY STEM AND TESTED. I'VE RETAINED RECORDS, COMMUNICATION, AND SAMPLE OF GAS IN TANK AT TIME OF COLLAPSE. ONE PROBLEM AFTER ANOTHER WITH VEHICLE.
NOTICED LARGE CRACKS IN SIDEWALL OF HANKOOK OPTIMO H725A DOT 1GPR DY H 0711 205/55 R16 91H - 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA 45,000 MILES. HAD TIRE REPLACED AT OWN EXPENSE. 9-12-2013 53,000 NOTICED 2 OTHER TIRES NOW WITH THE SAME LARGE CRACKS IN SIDEWALL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA EQUIPPED WITH HANKOOK OPTIMO H725A TIRES, LINE SIZE 205/55R/16H. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HAVING A TIRE ROTATION PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE AT A LOCAL TIRE SHOP, THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED HIM THAT ALL FOUR TIRES WERE CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND DID NOT PROVIDE FURTHER ASSISTANCE SINCE THE TIRES WERE NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
I HAD JUST EXITED THE HIGHWAY, WHEN THE ENGINE DIED AT 35 MPH. THE CAR WOULD NOT RESTART AFTERWARDS. THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM WAS CONTAMINATED WITH METAL SHAVINGS. THIS APPEARS TO BE ANOTHER CASE OF FAILURE OF THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WITH THE 2.0 TDI ENGINE. ONLY DIESEL FUEL HAS *EVER* BEEN USED IN THE VEHICLE. AS PER VW'S TSB, THE DEALER TESTED THE FUEL AND INDICATED THAT IT WAS OK. VW COVERED THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM UNDER WARRANTY. OTHERWISE, THIS WOULD HAVE COST APPROXIMATELY $10K. *TR
TDI DIESEL JETTA WITH 30,000 MILES BY ORIGINAL OWNER WAS BEING DRIVEN 35 MPH CITY SECONDARY STREETS, VEHICLE ABRUPTLY LOST POWER. COASTED TO SIDE OF ROAD. POLICE WERE CALLED, THEY ASCERTAINED THAT LOCATION WAS SAFE ENOUGH UNTIL TOW. TOWED TO DEALER. DEALER SAID FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED. VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO DEALER A FEW DAYS BEFORE FOR 30,000 MILE SERVICE. DIESEL FUEL ALMOST ALWAYS PURCHASED AT SAME 3 YR OLD BUSY STATION, AND CAR WAS RUNNING ON SAME TANK OF FUEL AS WHEN IT WAS SERVICED. THERE WAS NO WARNING OF PROBLEMS, NO HESITATION, NO LOSS OF POWER, NO WARNING LIGHTS BEFORE TOTAL SHUTDOWN OF ENGINE. ON A FREEWAY, THIS COULD HAVE BEEN VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
I PURCHASED A USED 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA IN JULY 2012 WITH APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES. 6 MONTHS LATER I NOTICED THAT ONE OF THE FRONT HEADLIGHTS WAS OUT. I LOOKED UP THE REPLACEMENT BULB AND PURCHASED A H7 HALOGEN BULB FOR APPROXIMATELY $25. A FEW MORE MONTHS DOWN THE ROAD THE OTHER HEADLIGHT WENT OUT, AGAIN, I PURCHASED THE REPLACEMENT BULB AT PRICE POINT OF $25. SINCE THEN I HAVE REPLACED EACH HEADLIGHT AT LEAST TWO MORE TIMES. WITH THAT SAID, I AM NOW COMING TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THERE HAS TO BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THE JETTAS HEADLIGHTS. I'VE NOTICED OTHER JETTA'S ON THE ROAD WITH HEADLIGHTS OUT AS WELL. IN MOST CARS LIGHTS LAST AT LEAST YEAR OR MORE. I RECALL IN A PREVIOUS VEHICLE I REPLACEMENT THE LIGHTS ONCE AND THAT WAS AFTER 3 MAYBE 4 YEARS, AND THESE WERE ALL DAY RUNNING LIGHTS. THE COST TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP WOULD BE $149 AND THAT IS JUST TO LOOK AT THE CAR. THAT WOULD BE UNFAIR FOR ME TO PAY $149 EVERY TIME THE LIGHT GOES OUT BECAUSE OF AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE I HAVE NO CONTROL OVER. *TR
ON MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26TH I WAS DRIVING MY WIFE IN OUR 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI DIESEL FROM OUR VACATION PROPERTY IN SALYER, CALIFORNIA (TRINITY COUNTY) TO OUR HOME IN ARCATA, CALIFORNIA (HUMBOLDT COUNTY), A DISTANCE OF 45 MILES ALONG ROUTE 299. 299 IS A TWO LANE HIGHWAY THAT HAS OCCASIONAL PASSING LANES AND HAS A POSTED SPEED OF 55 MPH. APPROXIMATELY 15 MILES INTO THE TRIP, I ATTEMPTED TO PASS A SLOW MOVING VEHICLE BY MEANS ONE OF THESE PASSING LANES. AS I PULLED INTO THE PASSING LANE, THE JETTA ACCELERATED SMOOTHLY FROM 45 MPH TO APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH, WHEN IT SUDDENLY LOST POWER AND BEGAN TO DECELERATE RAPIDLY, EVENTUALLY DOWN TO APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE WAS ROARING AT A VERY HIGH LEVEL OF RPM?S AS THIS DECELERATION OCCURRED. THIS EVENT CREATED AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION: THE PASSING LANE IS OF LIMITED LENGTH AND THE PASSING MANEUVER NEEDED TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE IT ENDED BECAUSE THERE WAS ONCOMING TRAFFIC. IMMEDIATELY BEHIND THE JETTA WAS A PICKUP TRUCK THAT HAD ALSO PULLED INTO THE PASSING LANE. AS THE DECELERATION OCCURRED, THE PICKUP TRUCK CAME WITHIN INCHES OF COLLIDING WITH THE REAR OF THE JETTA. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO SAFETY AT THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THEREAFTER THE CAR COULD ONLY BE DRIVEN IN 1ST GEAR AND AT ONLY AT A VERY SLOW SPEED. I CALLED VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICAN AND THEY MADE ARRANGEMENTS TO TOW THE JETTA TO THE NEAREST DEALER, REDDING VOLKSWAGEN, LOCATED IN REDDING CALIFORNIA. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME AN EVENT LIKE THIS HAS OCCURRED SINCE I PURCHASED THE JETTA ON JULY 10, 2011. IN APRIL 2012, AS I PULLED ONTO THE MAIN STREET IN SUSANVILLE CALIFORNIA AND BEGAN ACCELERATING FROM A STOP TO APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE JETTA SUDDENLY AND RAPIDLY DECELERATED. ON BOTH OCCASIONS THE RAPID DECELERATION OCCURRED WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS. *TR

THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC; THE FAILURE WAS LOCATED AT THE FUEL PUMP FILTER. THE DEALER ADVISED THAT THE FUEL USED CONTAMINATED THE FUEL PUMP FILTER WITH DIBRIS. THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED, HOWEVER THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED; THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE MADE A LOUD NOISE WHILE DRIVING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 20,200.
STARTING THE END OF OCTOBER, 2012 MY HORN STARTED WORKING ONLY INTERMITTENTLY. ON A COUPLE OF OCCASIONS I HAVE HAD PEOPLE PULLING INTO MY LANE WITHOUT LOOKING, AND I TRIED TO HONK TO LET THEM KNOW I WAS THERE, YET THE HORN WOULD NOT WORK. I HAD TO BRAKE HARD, OR SWERVE ABRUPTLY TO AVOID BEING HIT. IT WORKS INTERMITTENTLY WHEN I AM LOCKING THE CAR WITH THE ALARM ALSO. THIS IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH THE FUSE PROBLEM THE CARS WERE RECALLED FOR EARLIER. THE HORN WOULD QUIT WORKING ALL TOGETHER IF THE FUSE WENT BAD. SOMETIMES THE HORN WORKS, AND SOMETIMES IT DOESN'T. I HAVE LOGGED ONTO SEVERAL ON-LINE FORUMS FOR VOLKSWAGEN OWNERS, SUCH AS WWW.TDI.CLUB AND NOTICED THAT OTHERS WITH THE SAME CAR ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I TOOK IT TO VOLKSWAGEN TO HAVE IT FIXED, AND THEY SAID THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. THE HORN HAPPENED TO BE WORKING THAT MORNING. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECTIVE PART(S) PROBLEM IF MANY ARE EXPERIENCING THE ISSUE. SERVICE PERSON CALLED TO SAY THERE WAS METAL IN MY FUEL SYSTEM/TANK, BUT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WRONG. HE ALSO ACCUSED ME OF PUTTING THE WRONG GAS IN MY CAR. I INFORMED SERVICE PERSON THAT IT TOOK 5 SECONDS ON THE INTERNET TO LEARN ABOUT THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION INTO THE MANY HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM FAILURES THAT CAUSE ENGINE TO STOP RUNNING. INTERESTINGLY, HE CALLED BACK 2 HOURS LATER AND ACKNOWLEDGED THAT FUEL SYSTEM AND POWERTRAIN AND OTHER STUFF NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS AN UNSAFE CAR. I COULD HAVE BEEN GOING 65 ON THE FREEWAY WITH A SMALL CHILD OR OTHER PEOPLE IN THE CAR, ALL OF WHOM COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED WHEN CAR SUDDENLY LOOSES ALL POWER AND MOMENTUM. MORNING RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN NEW ORLEANS (CENTER LANE) WHEN GLOW PLUG LIGHT STARTED FLASHING AND NO POWER TO CHANGE LANES. AT THIS TIME, TRYING NOT TO GET RUN OVER, I MANAGED TO GET OVER AND COAST TO AN OFF RAMP INTO THE LOWER 9TH WARD(SCARY). CAR WAS DEAD AND WOULD NOT START. BROUGHT TO A DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE 1 WEEK BEFORE IT COULD BE LOOKED AT IT. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THAT THIS CAR HAS BEEN TOWED DUE TO A DEFECTIVE DESIGN WHICH RESULTS IN THE HIGH PRESSURE PUMP FAILING SENDING DEBRIS THROUGHOUT THE SYSTEM. NHTSA SAYS IN CONCLUDING STATEMENTS DATED 12/21/12 THAT (NHTSA RECALL NO. 11V-490) 'THE ACTION TAKEN BY VOLKSWAGEN IS SUFFICIENT TO RESOLVE THE ISSUES RAISED BY THIS INVESTIGATION. LAST PURCHASE FROM SHEETZ HAGERSTOWN I NOTIFIED THEM WHAT DEALERSHIP WAS PROPOSING THE CORPORATE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP 'SHARRETTS' AND REQUESTED PROOF OF THEIR BLAME. ONCE I HAVE MADE CONTACT TO SHEETZ AND SHELL THEY INTURN CALL DEALERSHIP THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS METAL SHAVINGS NOTED IN ADDITION TO THE FUELRAIL SYSTEM FAILURE. ON THIRD CALL TODAY THEY WERE NOT SURE IT WAS COVERED AND A FUEL TEST WAS BEING SENT OUT FOR OFFICIAL TESTING TO DETERMINE THE PRESENCE OF GASOLINE CONTAMINATION. AFTER I THREATENED A LAWYER THEY STATE WILL CALL CORPORATE FOR DIRECTION AND HAVE REP REVIEW. I HAD THE CAR TOWED RIGHT TO A VW DEALERSHIP KNOWING THAT THERE IS A MAJOR ISSUE, AND ONGOING INVESTIGATION WITH THE NHTSA ON HPFP FAILURES. VW AGREED THAT THEY SAW METAL IN THE FUEL AND ON THE FILTER, AND PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THIS WAS "NOT ABNORMAL". THAT EVERY TDI CAR THEY SERVICE HAS METAL BITS IN THE FILTER. I AM A ASE MASTER TECH IN A HIGH VOLUME LOCAL REPAIR SHOP THAT DEALS IN A VERY HIGH VOLUME OF DIESEL REPAIR SERVICE. METAL IN FUEL IS NOT NORMAL. THERE IS ONLY ONE PLACE FOR THE METAL TO COME FROM, AND THAT IS THE HPFP. VW PUT A NEW FILTER IN THE CAR AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. I GUESS I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CAR TO STOP DEAD IN TRAFFIC AND NOT RESTART TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. *TR

NO LEAKS ON THE GROUND AS THE LEAK WAS CONTAINED IN THE VACUUM CHAMBER - I WAS SLOWLY RUNNING OUT OF BRAKE FLUID. THE DEALER FOUND THE SEALING SURFACE OF THE MASTER CYLINDER WAS NOT SMOOTH - THEY FIGURED IT WAS LEAKING FROM NEW. SHOP REPLACED MASTER CYLINDER AND VACUUM CHAMBER UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
A WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE ENGINE BEGAN PERFORMING POORLY AT 75MPH ON A BUSY HIGHWAY. SLOWING TO EXIT ABOUT A MILE FURTHER, THE ENGINE ABRUPTLY STALLED AND QUIT ON THE OFF RAMP. THE REPAIR REPORT INDICATED THAT IT WAS AN INTERNAL HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. IT CAUSED METAL PIECES TO SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM. THE TOTAL FOR PARTS ONLY WAS $4445. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AGAIN. AAA TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP VIA FLATBED. THE DEALERSHIP INITIALLY THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS WATER IN THE FUEL, BUT AFTER FLUSHING THE FUEL SYSTEM, THE VEHICLE STILL WOULD NOT START. AT THAT POINT, THEY TOOK APART THE FUEL PUMP, AND DISCOVERED THAT THE PUMP HAD FAILED INTERNALLY, AND PUT METAL SHAVINGS INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM. REPAIR QUOTE WAS APPROXIMATELY $10,000. *TR
AS I WAS DRIVING MY 2011 JETTA TDI SPORTSWAGON, I NOTICED A STEAM COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, AND DIESEL SMELL INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. WHEN I OPENED THE HOOD THERE WAS DIESEL ALL OVER THE ENGINE AND BELTS, AND LARGE AMOUNT OF STEAM WAS COMING OUT. WHEN I TOOK OF THE ENGINE COVER AND STARTED THE CAR I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE 2ND CYLINDER INJECTOR PIPE. I DO NOT HAVE WARRANTY ON THE VEHICLE, BUT THIS ISSUE SHOULD BE FIXED AND PAID BY VW. THERE IS SMELL IN THE VEHICLE, FOAM IS SOAKED WITH DIESEL, AND BELTS MIGHT HAVE LESS LIFE IN THEM. WHILE DRIVING AT 75 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE LOST POWER. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN FLASHING, AS DID THE DPF LIGHT AND THE PRE-HEAT COIL LIGHT. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY AND INTO A DRIVEWAY BEFORE IT QUIT. WOULD NOT START AGAIN. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO DEALERSHIP THE NEXT DAY. WAS INFORMED THAT THE HPFP FAILED, AND THAT THE PUMP AND FUEL DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM HAD TO BE REPLACED. SERVICE DIRECTOR INDICATED THAT THE REPAIR BILL WOULD BE $10-11,000. VW IS COVERING THE COST OF THE REPAIR. AM GRATEFUL THAT I HAD DROPPED MY WIFE AND YOUNG DAUGHTER OFF AT HOME, AND THAT I WAS NOT IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN THIS OCCURRED. *TR
THE FACTORY INSTALLED LIP SPOILERS THAT COME WITH 2011 JETTA OR LATER ARE ONLY ATTACHED USING GLUE. IT IS NOT SECURED WITH ANY HOOKS OR SCREWS. SO THE LIP SPOILER AT THE BACK OF MY JETTA HAS STARTED TO COME OFF. IN MY OPINION THIS IS A BIG SAFETY ISSUE SINCE THE LIP SPOILER CAN COME APART AT ANY TIME. SO IF I AM ON THE ROAD OR ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE LIP SPOILER COMES APART, IT MAY CAUSE DAMAGE OR INJURIES TO CARS BEHIND ME. I TOOK THIS ISSUE TO THE VW DEALERSHIP AT DULLES, VA. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DENIED WARRANTY SERVICE TO REPAIR THE LIP SPOILER. THEY EVEN TRIED TO CLAIM THAT I HAD SOMEHOW BEEN INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHICH IS NOT TRUE AT ALL. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT WHILE AT A TIRE SHOP FOR UNRELATED REPAIRS, THE TECHNICIAN NOTICED THAT THE INTERIOR SIDE WALLS OF THREE OF THE TIRES STARTED TO RUPTURE IN AND AROUND THE CIRCUMFERENCE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ONE OF THE TIRES WAS THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE BUT WAS UNAWARE OF THE LOCATION OF THE OTHER TWO TIRES AFFECTED. THE TIRES WERE REPLACED. THE DEALER WAS MADE AWARE OF FAILURE. I WAS DRIVING ON I91 NORTH IN SPRINGFIELD MASS THE ENGINE RUNAWAY ON ME, CAR REACHED 100 MPH FOR SOME TIME PUT CAR IN NEUTRAL, THE ENGINE RUN AT FULL SPEED UNTIL BLOWING UP THROWING A CONNECTING ROD THROUGH THE BLOCK, FINALLY I MANAGED TO PULL THE CAR ON THE BRAKE DOWN LANE. I HAVE JUST PICKED THE CAR FROM A 30000 MILE SERVICE OIL CHANGE FROM FATHERS & SONS VW IN WEST SPRINGFIELD MASS. TOWED THE CAR BACK TO DEALER, ENGINE IS COMPLETE LOSS NEEDS TO BE REPLACE. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH AND APPROACHED A TRAFFIC STOP TO MAKE A TURN. THE CONTACT APPLIED THE BRAKES TO A COMPLETE STOP AND WHEN THE BRAKE WAS RELEASED, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATES TO 70 MPH. THE BRAKE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY WITH A LOUD CHIME SOUNDING INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AND THE VEHICLE REDUCED SPEED BEFORE RESUMING NORMALLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO WAS UNABLE TO LOCATE THE MALFUNCTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,000.
I HAD AN ACCIDENT WETE CARE VERIED HARD LEFT AND HAD ACCIDENT. INSURANCE AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES BLAMED ME FOR INCIDENT. CAR FRONT END WAD COMPLETELY REBUILT AND WITHIN ONE YEAR I HAVE A LOWER CONTROL ARM THAT HAS BROKEN DUE TO MANUFACTURE DEFECT. MOLD OF STEEL TO BALL JOINT- RUBBER. IT HAS BROKEN AGAIN AND VW WILL NOT STAND BEHIND STATING WARRANTY ON CHASSIS COMPONENTS ARE ONE YEAR. HOW DOES A MOJOR CHASSIS COMPONENT FAIL AND AND A HIGH SAFETY ISSUE, NOT STANT BEHIND THIS TYPE ITEM. IT HAS NOW TORN UP A NEW FRONT STRUT AND TOP STRUT TOWER. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS AS I JUST HAD RECALL COMPLETED FOR FAILURE OF REAR TRAILING ARMS AND VW INSERTED PLATES TO STRENGTHEN. WHAT AREY OPTIONS AS THIS IS A GRAVE SAFETY ISSUE AND IM BEING ASKED TO SPEND 3K TO REPLACE AFTER WE JUST SPENT 14K TO REBUILD FRONT SUSPENSION AFTER ACCIDENT.
2011 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI - TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE ON 07/05/2012 AND THE DEALER STATES THAT I HAVE A MALFUNCTIONING CLUTCH (COULD BE A THROW OUT BEARING, PRESSURE PLATE OR MULTIPLE CLUTCH COMPONENTS) NONE OF WHICH HAS BEEN 100% DIAGNOSED UNTIL THEY PULL THE TRANSMISSION OUT AND INSPECT IT, TO DO THIS THE DEALER WANTS $1000.00 + PARTS. I WAS ALSO INFORMED THAT MY RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING NEEDS REPLACING ($435.00) FOR THE BEARING ALONE + LABOR. AT THIS POINT IT SEEMS MORE OF A MANUFACTURER OR WORKMANSHIP DEFECT, I CURRENTLY HAVE 44,500 MILES ON THE CAR AND USE IT 90% ON THE HIGHWAY AT 65-75 MPH. DEALER STATES THAT THEY MAY OPEN AN INVESTIGATION WITH VOLKSWAGEN BUT I STILL HAVE TO PAY TO GET MY CAR OUT. *TR
TRAVELING IN THE LEFT LANE ON 95 N OUTSIDE BALTIMORE MD AT 65 MPH MY VEHICLE'S GAS PEDAL STOPPED RESPONDING AND THE CAR BEGAN TO LOSE POWER AND LURCH FORWARD AND EVENTUALLY DIE AS THE YELLOW DIESEL ENGINE INDICATOR ALONG WITH THE YELLOW ENGINE INDICATOR BEGAN BLINKING. I WAS ABLE TO AVOID TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC AND COAST OVER TWO LANES TO AN OFF RAMP BEFORE THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED. AFTER CONTACTING VW ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO HERITAGE VW LOCATED AT 9215 HARFORD ROAD #2 PARKVILLE, MD 21234 (877) 398-1963. IT WAS AFTER 9:00 P.M SO THE VEHICLE WAS LEFT IN THE LOT AND ALL THE PAPERWORK WAS DROPPED IN THE BOX. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CITED A FUEL PUMP MALFUNCTION ALONG WITH A FAULTY FUEL GAUGE AS THE ISSUE.
