APPROXIMATELY 10/25/07 BEGAN TO SMELL STRONG FUEL FUMES EMANATING FROM VOLVO 2001 S-60 ALONG WITH A DIFFICULTY IN STARTING THE VEHICLE. ON-LINE INVESTIGATION AND DISCUSSION WITH VOLVO SPECIALIST REPAIR SHOP INDICATES ISSUE RELATED TO FAULTY FUEL PUMP / FILTER WHICH THE CORPORATION IS CURRENTLY RECALLING ONLY NEVADA AND ARIZONA......VOLVO SPECIALIST INDICATED THAT THEY ARE SEEING NUMEROUS VEHICLES (IN JACKSONVILLE FLORIDA) WITH THE SAME ISSUE. OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY CONCERN WHEN STRONG FUEL FUMES ARE NOTICEABLE AROUND THE VEHICLE.... *TR
MY 2001 VOLVO S60, AT 68K MILES, HAD CRACKS IN THE FUEL PUMP, CAUSING A STRONG GAS SMELL DUE TO THE LEAKS. THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH THE S60 IN PARTICULAR, SINCE NUMEROUS POSTINGS HAVE BEEN SEEN REGARDING THIS SAME PROBLEM. WHEN I CALLED THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP, THEY KNEW IMMEDIATELY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THIS IS A $1000 REPAIR THAT IS NEARLY CERTAIN FROM WHAT I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO TELL. APPARENTLY VOLVO HAS ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM, BUT ONLY IN ARIZONA AND NEVADA. THE IDEA THAT THE CAR DEVELOPS THIS PROBLEM UPON ENTERING THESE STATES SEEMS AMUSING. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT SMELLED A GASEOUS ODOR NEAR THE FUEL FILLER DOOR. A MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILED, BUT NO REPLACEMENT WAS MADE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 72,800 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 71,500. THE CONSUMER STATED THE PUMP HAS NOT FAILED AS OF YET, BUT WILL EVENTUALLY NEED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $550 OR ABOVE. STRONG SMELL OF FUEL WITHIN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. LOCAL VOLVO SERVICE HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP WHICH IS LOCATED DIRECTLY UNDER THE REAR SEAT OF THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. APPEARS TO BE SIMILAR TO THE RECALL OF CARS IN NEVADA AND ARIZONA, BUT ALTHOUGH FLORIDA ALSO EXHIBITS SIMILAR CLIMATE CONDITIONS, DOES NOT PERTAIN TO FL VEHICLES PER VOLVO. GASOLINE FUMES WERE VERY STRONG & COULD HAVE VERY LIKELY RESULTED IN FIRE. THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY VERY SERIOUS DESIGN FLAW. VOLVO CHARGED OVER $900 TO REPAIR. AUTO HAS ONLY 32,000 MILES ON IT. *JB
I BOUGHT MY 2001 VOLVO S60 N/A BRAND NEW AT THE END OF 2001. SINCE UP TO ABOUT SEPTEMBER OF 2007, I HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH THE VEHICLE EXCEPT ROUTINE SERVICE. THEN I NOTICED LOUD "CLANGING" AND "METALLIC THUMPING" WHENEVER I WENT OVER ROUGH ROADS AT ANY SPEED. TURNS OUT THAT MY CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS (BE THEY EVER POORLY MADE) CRACKED INTO PIECES. TOOK MY VEHICLE TO MY INDEPENDENT VOLVO SHOP TO REPAIR THE BUSHINGS. THE TECHNICIAN, AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE DONE, NOTIFIED ME THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK COMING FROM THE REAR FUEL TANK AREA. FUNNY THAT IT WAS THAT EXACT WEEK THAT I STARTED TO NOTICE THE GASOLINE SMELL, BE SO EVER FAINT. AS OF TODAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2008, THE SMELL HAS BECOME VERY STRONG WHERE AS EVEN WITH THE WINDOWS OPEN WHILE DRIVING, I LITERALLY HAVE TO STICK MY NOSE AGAINST THE OPEN WINDOW TO BREATHE IN WHAT SHOULD BE FRESH AIR. *TR
I HAD THE VERY VERY STRONG GAS SMELL WITH MY 2001 S60 T5 A MONTH AGO BOTH DURING DRIVING AND PARKING. TURNED OUT TO BE A LEAKING FUEL ON THE TOP OF TANK WHICH CAUSE KIND OF WET AT BOTTOM OF CAR AROUND THE TANK. FLOOR DRIPPING ALSO CAN BE SEEN AFTER SEVERAL HOURS PARKING. RECENTLY, SEVERAL COLD ENGINE STAT BECAME HARDER. VOLVO DIAGNOSED AS FAILURE OF FUEL PUMP WHICH NEEDS TO BE REPLACED(POORLY DESIGNED PLASTIC PUMP HOUSING). I SCARED TO PARK MY VOLVO IN THE GARAGE BECAUSE OF POTENTIAL FIRE. I HEARD THIS PROBLEM HAPPENED IN HUNDREDS VOLVOS IN ARIZONA AND NEVADA WHICH CAUSED SAFETY RECALL. I'M WONDERING WHY THE SAME SAFETY PROBLEM CAN'T RESULT IN RECALL IN OTHER STATES. HUMAN LIFE SHOULD BE THE SAME VALUE AS VOLVO BUILDERS. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V152000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP). AS OF SEPTEMBER 10, 2007, THE DEALER HAD NOT REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 72,000.
THERE IS A RECALL # 07V152000 FOR VOLVO S60 2001 T5 CARS IN ARIZONA AND NEVADA. IT IS REGRADING FALIURE IN THE FEUL PUMP DUE TO GAS ODOR AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS. I AM USING THE BEST KIND OF GAS AVAILABLE HERE AND I BELEIVE THIS SUMMER WE HAD THE SAME CLIMATE CONDITIONS IN NEVADA AND ARIZONA. THEREFORE, I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, WHICH IS LEAKING GAS FROM THE FEUL PUMP. THIS IS KIND OF DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH CAUSE POLLUTION. FOR SAFTEY, I AM REPARING THE CAR NOW. BUT PLEASE CHECK IF THIS CAN BE RECALLED FOR THE CARS IN CALIFORNIA. JUST SO I CAN GET MY MONEY BACK. AROUND 750$ FROM THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP. THANKS
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF A 2001 VOLVO S60; NOTED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR IN THE GARAGE AND AT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE (NOTED DURING EXTREME SUMMER WEATHER IN SOUTH). CAR WAS TAKEN TO VOLVO CERTIFIED REPAIRSHOP AND WAS NOTED TO HAVE A LEAK AT THE FUEL PUMP. THE PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED- TOTAL EXPENSE OF $810.00. THE VEHICLE HAS 92,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED. *TR

WHEN HE RETRIEVED HIS VEHICLE FROM THE DEALER, HE SMELLED GASOLINE FUMES INSIDE THE VEHICLE, WHICH REMAINED FOR A WEEK. THE CONTACT STATED THAT NO FLUIDS WERE LEAKING. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP FAILED. THROUGH ONLINE RESEARCH, HE DISCOVERED NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V152000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP). VOLVO INFORMED HIM THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL, HOWEVER, THE CONTACT FELT OTHERWISE. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER FOR THE ACCELERATOR WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE VIN, ENGINE SIZE, NUMBER OF CYLINDERS, AND SPEED WERE UNKNOWN. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 70,000.

HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC AND HE STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE YEAR, MAKE, AND MODEL OF HIS VEHICLE. HE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THEY WOULD NOT REPAIR IT FOR FREE BECAUSE IT WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V152000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP). THE CONTACT FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000.
I OWN A 2001 VOLVO S60. I SMELLED GASOLINE WHEN I STARTED THE VEHICLE, BUT THE MANUFACTURER HAS NOT INDICATED A PROBLEM. WHEN I REVIEWED THE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE ON WWW.NHTSA.GOV, I NOTED THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM UNDER REVIEW: PE06-053 2001 VOLVO S60 FUEL PUMP LEAKAGE 15-NOV-2006 I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM I AM EXPERIENCING IS RELATED TO THIS ITEM. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT SMELLED GAS FUMES INSIDE THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. HE CHECKED THE VEHICLE AND DID NOT FIND ANY LEAKS UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC AND THEY STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP, LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE BACK SEAT, CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH VOLVO AND THEY ACKNOWLEDGED THE FAILURE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S60. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE THE ODOR OF FUEL WAS PRESENT IN HER 2 STORY HOME. THE ODOR WAS STRONGER WHEN THE FUEL TANK WAS FILLED TO THE CAPACITY. THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND ELBOW ASSEMBLY WERE CRACKED. THE MECHANIC REMOVED THE SEATS, DRAINED THE FUEL PUMP, REPLACED THE SEATS AND TESTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND IT TO BE OPERATING NORMALLY. THE FAILURE CONTINUED AFTER THE REPAIR WAS MADE. THE MECHANIC REPLACED THE O RING AND SENSOR. THE ODOR WAS NOT SMELLED AFTER THE REPAIR. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 66,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 66,800. THE CONSUMER STATED THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO NORTH CAROLINA AND OTHER STATES. UPDATED 09/25/07. *JB
ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF ARIZONA AND NEVADA, DUE TO THE COMBINATION OF FUEL QUALITY AND CLIMATE CONDITIONS, THE FUEL PUMP MAY, IN CERTAIN CASES, EXPERIENCE A REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY. THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS WOULD BE FUEL ODOR. I LIVE IN TENNESSEE AND MY CAR DOES THE SAME THING. WE HAVE HAD OVER 3 WEEKS OF 100 PLUS DEGREE TEMPS HERE. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED TRIED REPLACING THE FUEL FILTER, UNFORTUNATELY THAT DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. MY CAR GIVES OFF A STRONG GAS/FUEL SMELL, WHICH IS NOT COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD, BUT CAN BE SMELLED BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE CAR. IT HAS ABOUT 74,000 MILES ON IT, AND IS LESS THAN 8 YEARS OLD. I NOTICED THE SMELL NOW FOR MANY MONTHS, WHICH CONTINUES TO GET STRONGER. I SAW THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE CARS IN ARIZONA AND NEVADA, BUT I LIVE IN FLORIDA, WHERE IT CAN GET PRETTY HOT AS WELL. I BELIEVE THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE FUEL PUMP. THIS PROBLEM MUST BE HAPPENING QUITE OFTEN WITH OTHER VOLVO S60S. THE PROBLEM MAY STEM FROM A POORLY DESIGNED PLASTIC PUMP HOUSING. I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR THE VOLVO ETM WARRANTY PROGRAM ON 08/15/07 THINKING THAT THE FUEL SMELL WOULD BE CORRECTED WHEN THEY FIXED THE EMISSION SYSTEM PROBLEM. THE DEALER'S RECEIPT INDICATES THEY PERFORMED A FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE BECAUSE OF THROTLE BODY DIRT, BUT THE FUEL SMELL HAS ONLY GOTTEN WORSE. I DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO SPEND $$$ TO HAVE IT REPAIRED, WHEN IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. WHAT CAN I DO?*CN
I OWN A VOLVO S60 AND HAVE EXPERIENCED AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILURE. AS THE VOLVO DEALER HAS TOLD ME. "OH YEAH, WE KEEP THOSE IN STOCK. MANUFACTURING FLAW. THEY ARE BURNING OUT LIKE CRAZY." THE REPAIR IS GOING TO COST ME $900 USD AND I AM ABSOLUTELY LIVID. SOME RESEARCH HAS YIELDED THAT AN EXCESS OF 200,000 VEHICLES COULD BE AFFECTED AND SO FAR TENS OF THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN DIAGNOSED AND CLEANED, OR REPLACED. MY VEHICLE HAS RECEIVED THE "SOFTWARE UPGRADE 'RECALL'", BUT CLEARLY TO NO AVAIL. MY CAR HAS ONLY 60,000 MILES ON IT AND HAS TO HAVE A FAULTY MANUFACTURED PART REPLACED. I BOUGHT VOLVO FOR THE RELIABILITY AND SERVICE AND THUS FAR, HAVE RECEIVED NEITHER. THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT RESULTS IN EXCESSIVE AND SUDDEN STALLING IN TRAFFIC, OPEN ROAD, AND PARKED CONDITIONS. AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THIS DEFECT, I WAS ALMOST SANDWICHED AND NO DOUBT WOULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY INJURED, IF NOT KILLED, BY TWO TRACTOR TRAILERS ON A MERGE ON ROUTE 295. I'M AFRAID THAT VOLVO AND THE US GOVERNMENT IS AWAITING FATALITIES OR FORD'S SALE TO A FOREIGN COMPETITOR (BMW) BEFORE ISSUING THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 104,000.
MY DAUGHTER WAS STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND SURROUNDED BY CARS ON A FOUR LANE ROAD. ALL OF SUDDEN THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED CAUSING MY DAUGHTER TO PANIC THINKING SHE WAS ON FIRE DUE TO THE SMOKE AND EXPLOSION. SHE EXITED THE CAR IN TRAFFIC AND CALLED ME AND THE POLICE. NOBODY ELSE WAS IN THE CAR AT ANY TIME AND NO EVENT INSIDE OR OUTSIDE TOOK PLACE THAT CAUSED THE DEPLOYMENT. POLICE AND VOLVO DEALER INSPECTED THE CAR AND FOUND NO EVIDENCE THAT WOULD CAUSE A DEPLOYMENT. VOLVO PAID TO REPLACE ALL PARTS AND SENT SENSORS TO GET TESTED. TEST CAME BACK INDICATING THERE WAS A DEFINITE EVENT THAT CAUSED DEPLOYMENT. THIS IS WHY I AM REPORTING THIS INCIDENT , THE TESTING THEY PERFORMED INDICATING AN EVENT TOOK PLACE THAT CAUSED DEPLOYMENT IS CONTRARY TO PHYSICAL EVIDENCE COLLECTED BY POLICE AND VOLVO DEALER AND EYE WITNESS ACCOUNTS. EITHER VOLVO'S TESTING IS FAULTY OR SOMETHING WORSE HAS HAPPENED. *NM
2001VOLVO S60 TURBO - TRANSMISSION SLIPPING; HAVING PROBLEMS CHANGING GEARS; EITHER IT IS STRAINING TO CHANGE GEARS OR I HEAR AND FEEL A LOUD (CLUNCK). PROBLEM HAPPENS A LOT IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC. DEALER SAYS I NEED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AT A COST OF $4000. READ OTHER FORUMS AND OTHER VOLVO OWNERS ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS. *JB
ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS: FIRST, THE LIGHT BULBS, INCLUDING HEADLIGHTS, BRAKE LIGHTS, AND TURN SIGNALS, ON MY 2001 VOLVO S60 HAD TO BE REPLACED AT LEAST EVERY TWO MONTHS. THIS IS CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH VISIBILITY AND ALSO WITH THE LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT -- THEY DON'T LIKE IT WHEN I'M DRIVING THROUGH TOWN WITH NO LIGHTS ON. SECOND, THE INTERIOR LAMPS ABOVE MY DASHBOARD AND THE SUNROOF STOPPED WORKING ON AN INTERMITTENT BASIS. FOR NO SEEN REASON, I WON'T BE ABLE TO OPEN OR CLOSE THE SUNROOF (NOT GREAT WHEN IT'S RAINING AND I CAN'T GET IT CLOSED) AND THE LIGHTS WON'T WORK EITHER. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER NHTSA RECALL #06V441000 CONCERNING THE VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE, IT STALLED WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING. IT WAS MANEUVERED OFF THE ROAD AND RESTARTED. HOWEVER, IT WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO SUGGESTED THE VEHICLE BE TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. *AK
I HAVE APPROXIMATELY 80,000 MILES ON MY VEHICLE AND ON INTERMITTENT OCCASIONS I HAD EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH IDLE FLUCTUATION AND SLIGHT ERRATIC ACCELERATION AND POWER BEHAVIOR. ON ANOTHER OCCASION I WAS ENTERING THE FREEWAY AND AS I ACCELERATED INTO POSITION ON THE FREEWAY THE CAR FELT SLOW TO RESPOND AND SLUGGISH, THEN I RECEIVED AN URGENT ENGINE SERVICE REQUIRED MESSAGE ON MY DASH DISPLAY. AS SOON I HAD THE CHANCE I PULLED OVER TO CHECK ENGINE VITALS, OIL, COOLANT ETC, EVERYTHING WAS GOOD AND I HADN'T NOTICED ANY SERIOUS DRIVABILITY ISSUES BUT RELUCTANT TO TRAVEL AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON THE FREEWAY. I INQUIRED WITH THE VOLVO DEALER AT MY NEXT SERVICE WHICH COINCIDED WITH THIS MOST RECENT ISSUE. IT WAS EXPLAINED TO ME THAT THE FAULT CODE INDICATED PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE/SYSTEM (ETM/ETS), AND THAT I COULD EITHER HAVE IT CLEANED WHICH WOULD BE A TEMPORARY FIX, OR REPLACED WHICH WOULD COST OVER $1000.00. I THOUGHT ALL VOLVO'S INEVITABLY COME FROM THE SAME PLACE. WHAT SETS MY VEHICLE APART FROM ANY OTHER, ITS STILL U.S. SPEC AND ITS STILL A VOLVO AND WE ARE ALL EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS IT APPEARS. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET, I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM EFFECTING SEVERAL MODEL VEHICLES RANGING FROM YEARS 1999-2002 AND IS A POTENTIALLY LIFE-THREATENING PROBLEM UNDER CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES AND WHICH VOLVO HAS REFUSED TO RECOGNIZE AND REFUSES TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THE PROBLEM PART THAT IS NOT MECHANICAL AND IN MY OPINION DOES NOT QUALIFY AS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. *JB

I OWN A 2001 VOLVO S60 2.4T. I HAVE LATELY NOTICED A STRONG GASOLINE ODOR ON THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY TELL ME THE GASOLINE PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THERE IS A PLASTIC CAP THE JOINS THE PUMP TO THE GAS TANK THAT IS CRACKED AND THAT IS CAUSING GASOLINE TO LEAK. I HAVE RESEARCHED WITH SEVERAL SERVICE SHOPS, AND THEY TELL ME THEY HAVE SEEN MANY OCCURRENCES WITH THESE MODEL FOR THAT PROBLEM, WHICH FOR A 5 YEAR OLD CAR SEEMS UNACCEPTABLE. IT IS A VERY EXPENSIVE PART AND LABOR AND IT SEEMS IT ALL CAUSED BECAUSE OF A DEFECTIVE PLASTIC "CAP" THAT JOINS THE PUMP TO THE TANK. I HAD THE DEALER REPLACE THE PART, BUT SEEMS TO ME THIS IS A MAJOR PROBLEM THAT SHOULD BE COVERED BY A MANUFACTURER'S RECALL. ALSO, THE CAR HAS PLASTIC OR FIBERGLASS MOLDING THAT RUN ON TOP BETWEEN THE DOORS AND CEILING THAT HAVE BUILT UP A LOT OF RUST, WHICH AGAIN THE DEALER STATES ARE NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY, BUT AGAIN, FOR A 5 YEAR OLD CAR SEEMS UNACCEPTABLE. *JB

THE DEALERSHIP AND AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP INFORMED THE CONTACT THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THE VOLVO FUEL PUMPS. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT A PART ON THE TOP OF FUEL PUMP FRACTURED WHICH CAUSED THE FUEL PUMP TO LEAK FUEL.

A QUICK SEARCH OF THE INTERNET INDICATE THAT THIS ISSUE IS BECOMING MORE COMMON. WE NOW LEAVE THE VEHICLE OUTSIDE OF THE GARAGE FOR FEAR OF AN EXPLOSION IGNITED BY THE HOMES' HOT WATER HEATER. I BOUGHT THIS USED 2001 VOLVO S60 WITH 54K ON IT. FOUND OUT THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM OF COMPUTER SHUTTING DOWN WITH NO WARNINGS AND THERE'S ONLY POWER TO RADIO AND THE A/C FAN...NO SIGNALS NO INSTRUMENT PANEL AND NOTHING WORKED. THERE WAS ALL THESE MESSAGES SAYING BRAKE FAILURE, EMISSION CONTROL FAILURE AND SRS FAILURE MESSAGE. ENGINE RAN AS LONG AS IT WAS ON, ONCE TURNED OFF WOULD NOT START AGAIN. THE CAR COMPUTER RESETS BY ITSELF IN ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES. TOOK IT TO VOLVO DEALER TWO TIMES EXPLAINING THE DETAILS. THEY DID A SOFTWARE UPGRADE, CLEARED THE CODES AND RESET THE COMPUTER. BOTH TIMES, THE CAR WORKED FOR A WHILE BUT HAPPENED AGAIN. TWO DAYS AGO HAPPENED IN THE FREEWAY AND I ALMOST HAD A CRASH (NO SIGNALS AND ALSO COULDN'T OPEN WINDOWS TO HAND SIGNAL). NOTICED A GAS SMELL OUTSIDE CAR, COMING FROM REAR OF CAR. CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY, SO WE RETURNED IT TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER TOOK SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM. FINALLY, THE DEALER DISCOVERED AND INFORMED US THAT THE GAS TANK HAD A CRACK AND THE GASOLINE WAS LEAKING FROM THE CRACK. AFTER PART WAS REPLACED, THE GAS SMELL WENT AWAY. PROBLEM WAS FIXED FOR A FEW MONTHS, AND NOW GAS SMELL HAS RETURNED. CAR IS CURRENTLY AT DEALER AWAITING ANOTHER REPAIR. WHILE THERE HAS BEEN NO FIRE ASSOCIATED WITH THIS PROBLEM, WE ARE, OF COURSE, VERY AFRAID THAT THERE WILL BE A FIRE. THE GAS TANK IS ABOVE THE EXHAUST, SO WE ARE CONCERNED THAT GAS MIGHT DRIP OR SPLASH ON HOT COMPONENTS. DEALER INFORMED US THAT HE HAS SEEN SEVERAL OTHER CARS WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM. MY 2001 VOLVO S60 LOST POWER LAST NIGHT, WHILE I WAS IN THE FAST LANE DRIVING 70 MPH ON INTERSTATE 5! I RAPIDLY LOST SPEED AND BY SOME MIRACLE WAS ABLE TO WEAVE THROUGH TRAFFIC TO THE ROADSIDE. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN BUT IT WAS AS IF THE GAS PEDAL WAS NOT CONNECTED TO THE ENGINE. I MANAGED TO PROCEED AT FAST IDLE SPEED TO AN OFF RAMP AND FOUND A PARKING LOT, WHERE I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. I CONTACTED THE COMPANY I BOUGHT THE CAR FROM AND THEY SUGGESTED THAT I TRY TO RE-START THE ENGINE, WHICH I DID AND THE PROBLEM HAD CORRECTED ITSELF. I HAVE SCHEDULED MY VOLVO FOR SERVICE. THE IRONY IS THAT MY WIFE HAS A 2001 VOLVO XC STATION WAGON AND THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED WITH HER VEHICLE LAST SEPTEMBER. THE VOLVO DEALER CORRECTED THE PROBLEM BY REPLACING AN ECM AND RE-PROGRAMMING IT. THE PROBLEM WITH HER VOLVO XC HASN'T RE-OCCURRED. THE REAL CONCERN IS THAT IN BOTH INSTANCES, WE WERE TRAVELING ON AN INTERSTATE FREEWAY AT HIGH SPEED WHEN THE PROBLEM OCCURRED AND ONLY BY PURE LUCK DIDN'T CAUSE AN ACCIDENT!!*JB
AT 53,000 MILES (FEBRUARY 2006) MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT AND URGENT SERVICE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME. HOWEVER, I WAS I NOT EXPERIENCING ANY NOTICEABLE DRIVABILITY ISSUES. (WITH THE EXCEPTION OF SOME SLIGHTLY ROUGH GEAR SHIFTING - BUT I DIDN'T THINK MUCH OF IT). THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE FAULT CODE WAS RELATED TO MY TRANSMISSION AND THAT I NEED A SOFTWARE UPGRADE TO MY TCM (TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE). IF THE FAULT CODE RETURNED AFTER THE UPGRADE, MY TRANSMISSION WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. AND THAT MOST LIKELY (99.9%) THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE WOULD CORRECT THE PROBLEM. IN ADDITION, I HAD TO PAY $340 FOR THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE BECAUSE I WAS 6 MONTHS / 3,000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY AND SOFTWARE ISSUES WHERE NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY (3RD PARTY - EASYCARE -[VIA FORD]). A FEW WEEKS LATER (3/5/06), THE CHECK ENGINE COMES ON AGAIN AND THE DRIVABILITY DETERIORATES RAPIDLY ON MY TRIP HOME FROM WORK. HIGH RPM'S - LITTLE POWER - ABRUPT SHIFTING. FORTUNATELY, I WAS CLOSE TO HOME (WITHIN 1 MILE). IT FELT LIKE THE TRANSMISSION FELL APART. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALER (3/8/06), AFTER TWO DAYS OF 'TESTING', I'M TOLD THE ETM WAS REPLACED AT NO CHARGE AND TO COME PICK UP THE CAR. I PICKED IT UP AND COULD NOT LEAVE THE DEALER DRIVEWAY. THEY APOLOGIZED PROFUSELY AND SAID THE ETM WAS REPLACED BUT NOTICED THAT THERE IS STILL A PROBLEM. AFTER A FEW DAYS OF TROUBLESHOOTING BY THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED THAT THE CAR NEEDED A NEW TRANSMISSION (AND I HAD TO PAY AN ADDITIONAL $200 FOR EXTENDED WARRANTY CO-PAY). *NM

ADDITIONALLY, THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NOT INTERMITTENTLY SHIFT OUT OF PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND REPAIR.
2001 VOLVO S60 2.4T WITH 88,000 MILES AND RECORD OF REGULAR MAINTENANCE BEGAN SPUTTER AND SHOW A PERFORMANCE REDUCED MESSAGE, CAUSING THE ENGINE TO STOP ACCELERATING AND SLOW DOWN TO A CRAWL. THIS HAPPENED ONCE ON A MAJOR STREET, AND THEN AGAIN ON THE INTERSTATE. BOTH TIMES I WAS ABLE TO GET OUT OF TRAFFIC QUICKLY, THANKFULLY PREVENTING ANY POTENTIAL INCIDENTS. THE MECHANIC, WHO HAS IT NOW, INDICATED THE COMPUTER RECOGNIZED A THROTTLE PROBLEM, BUT NOTHING FROM THERE. VARIOUS OUTLETS MENTIONED A PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MECHANISM, THAT WAS NOT BEING PUBLICLY REPORTED BY VOLVO.*AK
SEVERAL EPISODES OF SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WHILE DRIVING. EPISODE 1/28/06 NEARLY RESULTED IN COLLISION AT INTERSECTION WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE THROUGH TURN. ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON, INDICATING: "REDUCED POWER" MAX SPEED 18 MPH, UPHILL 5 MPH. ENGINE ROUGH, ETM FAILURE.*AK
