2002 VOLVO S60. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO NHTSA SAFETY RECALL 21V-766. THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WERE NO VOLVO DEALERSHIPS WITHIN A REASONABLE DISTANCE TO PERFORM THE REPAIR. THE CONSUMER REQUESTED TO HAVE THE NECESSARY PARTS SENT TO A LOCAL AUTOMOTIVE SHOP.
The contact owns a 2002 Volvo S60. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V766000 (Air bags) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. AIR BAG THROW SHARDS OF METAL BUT VOLVO SAY I SHOULDN'T DRIVE IT BUT WON'T GIVE LOANER CAR, THEY WON'T HELP US AT ALL WITH THE SITUATION
InJanuary 3, 2021, I received a recall for the front driver airbag but replacement parts were not available. OnApril 19, 2021I received a letter the parts were available were and for me to contact a Volvo dealer to replace the front driver's airbag.free of charge. I called Volvo Cars to let me know the dealers in Nashville. They recommended Volvo of Cool Springs. I finally got an appointment on November 16,, and had my car towed to this dealer. I picked it up on November 9, with a receipt the front driver airbag Module had been installed. Aftera few days I noticed my SRS was showing"airbag Service Urgent".I resetthe SRS but the message is still showing. I called Volvo Cars and they agreed to tow the car to Volvo of Coolsprings to check the airbag. I picked my car up the clerk tried to explain the problem was with a failed DIM control module/display. The charge would be over $2000. so the receipt showed "customer declined recommendations. My SRS was working fine until they supposedly replaced the airbag. My mechanic looked it over and the airbag is not connected. Volvo refused to pay another dealer to check the airbag. However, Volvo offered to tow my car to Volvo of Nashville on Murfreesboro road , not the orignal dealer. I refused unless they took care of the charges. I now have an a front driver airbag that is not connected. I would have to pay a dealer to find out if the airbag had been replaced. i have been driving without the recall airbag. I am filing this complaint in case of accident and to let you know the airbag recall has not been corrected. You can never talk to a mechanic at Volvo of Cool Springs. I called numerous times and left messages for the mechanic or manager to return my call.
BOTH FRONT AIRBAGS DEPLOYED ON ITS OWN IN THE GARAGE
SERVICE LIGHTS SCROLL IN SPORADIC MOTION FLIPPING THROUGH CONSTANT ALERTS, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, AIR BAG LIGHT, CONSTANT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS GOING ON, FUEL DOOR WONT OPEN, BOTH FRONT SEATS HAVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, OBVIOUS BURN THRU ON PASSENGER SIDE INDICATES ITS BEEN OVERHEATED AND DANGEROUS. EVERYTIME I'VE TAKEN IT IN THE SHOP THEY SAY THERE ARE NO RECALLS - YET PLENTY OF COMPLAINTS OVER FIRES WITH SEATS. CAN'T USED HEATED SEATS AT ALL. ENGINE SEEMS TO REMAIN INCONSISTENT IN SPEED, DASHBOARD LIGHTS GO COMPLETELY OUT AND THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES AFFECT BACK BRAKE LIGHTS. THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES BOUNCE IN CYCLES TO WHERE NO ONE CAN DETECT THE PROBLEMS. CHECK ENGINE LINE CONTINUES TO HAVE TO BE RESET AND SERVICE LIGHTS CONTINUALLY SEND SCROLLED WARNING TO PULL OVER. ALREADY HAD VEHICLE TOWED AND CAN'T TRUST VEHICLE WILL START. ALWAYS A WIRING ISSUE INVOLVED. THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW AGAIN. 3/16/18 (SAME ISSUES)

FUEL LEAK FIRE HAZARD WON'T PASS INSPECTION. GAS SMELL. CAR LEAKING WHILE PARKED.
FUEL LEAKING FROM GAS TANK WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING, PASSENGER SIDE ABOVE AND SLIGHTLY AFT OF THE FUEL FILTER.
I WAS INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT IN BRONX, NY ON 8/16/2017 THAT CAUSED SEVERE DAMAGE TO MY 2002 VOLVO S60. THANKFULLY, I WAS THE ONLY ONE IN MY CAR. I HAD JUST LEFT MY LAST DESTINATION, MOVING SLOWLY AND DRIVING STRAIGHT FOR A SHORT BLOCK OR SO, WHEN MY 2002 VOLVO S60, WITH AN ODOMETER READING OF 45,000 MILES, BEGAN TO ACCELERATE OUT OF NOWHERE AND RACE - ALL ON ITS OWN. I TRIED BRAKING (FOOT AND HAND) BUT IT WAS TOO SUDDEN AND NEITHER COULD SLOW IT DOWN. THE CAR ACCELERATED OUT OF MY CONTROL, JUMPED THE SIDEWALK AND PLOWED THROUGH A FENCE BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. I'M STILL SHAKEN, THINKING OF WHAT COULD HAVE HAPPENED, BUT THANKFULLY THERE WAS NO ONE ELSE INVOLVED AND NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF ME OR WALKING BY. WHILE THIS IS SHOCKING AND SURPRISING TO ME, I BELIEVE THIS IS A KNOWN SAFETY MALFUNCTION ON CERTAIN MODELS OF VOLVO CARS. I HAVE READ THAT OTHER DRIVER'S HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE COMPANY ABOUT A RACING/SLIPPING TRANSMISSION BEFORE, WHICH SUGGESTS THAT VOLVO HAS BEEN AWARE OF THIS.FOR SOME TIME. THERE ARE SO MANY SITUATIONS IN WHICH THIS TYPE OF MALFUNCTION CAN EASILY BE FATAL SO I AM TREATING IT AS AN IMPENDING DISASTER FOR OTHERS THAT NEEDS TO BE ACTED ON URGENTLY. I AM SEEKING YOUR ASSISTANCE TO INVESTIGATING THIS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE SO THAT YOU MAY HAVE A CHANCE TO PRESERVE THE CAR FOR ADDED TESTING IF NECESSARY. I HAVE A VOLVO S60 2002- WITH VERY LOW MILES AT 114.000. IT HAS BEEN GARAGE KEPT A MAJORITY OF IT'S LIFE AND IS TRULY IN MINT CONDITION. I RECENTLY TOOK THE VEHICLE TO VOLVO FOR MAINTENANCE CHECK UP (UNDERSTANDABLY) AND ALSO BECAUSE AN AIR-BAG LIGHT CAME ON. IT READS SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT. NOW I'M NOT A MECHANIC, BUT BASICALLY THE AIRBAG IS IN TACT BUT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OR DIM HAS FAILED. SINCE IT WASN'T THE AIRBAG ITSELF I WASN'T SURE HOW THEY WERE RELATED AND THEY EXPLAINED THAT THE CLUSTER SIGNALS WERE NOT NECESSARILY REACHING THE AIRBAG. AS A MOTHER AND KNOWING VOLVO HAS A LOT OF AIRBAGS I WAS CURIOUS AS TO WHICH ONES WERE AFFECTED AND THEY SAID THEY CAN NOT GUARANTEE THAT ANY OF THEM WOULD DEPLOY IN A CRASH. NOW THIS IS A COSTLY PROBLEM $2300 AS WELL AS VERY COMMON AS I SEE IN THE FORUMS. LIKE I SAID, MY CAR IS IN QUITE GOOD CONDITION ASIDE FROM NORMAL MAINTENANCE FOR IT'S AGE, BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE THE DIM TO BE NORMAL MAINTENANCE. ADDITIONALLY, BECAUSE OF THE COST AND THE DIFFICULTY OF THIS TYPE OF ISSUE, OWNERS ARE BEING FORCED TO DIY IT THEMSELVES AND SEND THEIR DASHES TO SOME COMPANY IN CANADA. NOW IF IT ONLY AFFECTED MY RADIO OR INTERIOR LIGHTS, ETC. WHICH IT DOESN'T, I WOULD PROBABLY SEND IT OFF TO CANADA TOO. BUT WITH IT HAVING TO DO WITH THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE CAR- THE AIRBAGS AND VOLVO BEING THE TOP RATED FOR SAFETY FEATURES, MY CONFIDENCE IS VERY LOW AND I THINK SOMEONE NEEDS TO STEP IN. THE THING IS, VOLVOS ARE SUPPOSED TO EASILY LAST UP TO 300,000. BUT WITH FAULTY COMPUTERS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THE AIRBAG (EVEN THOUGH THE AIRBAG ITSELF IS FINE), OWNERS ARE BEING FORCED TO RID THEIR CARS, TRADE THEM IN, ETC. BECAUSE OF THIS ISSUE. WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE THE IMPORTANCE OF AIRBAGS TO CONSUMERS WHO ARE IGNORING HAVING THIS FIXED BECAUSE OF THE COST AND PREVENT INJURIES AHEAD OF TIME.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 134,000.
FUEL ODOR NOTED ON PASSENGER SIDE OF CAR, TOWARD THE BACK OF VEHICLE NEAR TANK, CAR HAS 137,000 MILES ON IT, PURCHASED NEW, LIVE IN KANSAS AND GARAGE KEPT. NO LEAKS NOTED UNDER CAR, VEHICLE IS STILL STARTING.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 171,000.
POSIBLE TASKATA RECALL AIR BAG LIGHT ON/ENGINE MISSING BAD/TRANMISSION SHIFT FAST AND HARD-SUN ROOF DON'T WORKS HAD TUNE-UP DONE CHANGE TURBO CHARGER REPLACED/REPLACED TROLLDER BODY-REPLACE THE RADIATOR BETWEEN AND A/C EVAPORATOR THAT CONNECT FROM TURBO AND TROLLER BODY ROUGH IDLEING WHILD STARTING AND DRIVING ON THE CITY STREETS. I WOULD ASK THE POWER TRAIN AND THE SPEED CONTROL TO INCLUDE THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BE REVIEWED FOR SERVICE AND ANY UNKNOWN OR OTHER.
TIRES BEGAN "CHUNKING". THROWING VISIBLE PEICES OF RUBBER WHILE DRIVING.
MICHELIN PILOT SPORT AS PLUS TIRES ARE CHUNKING ON SIDEWALLS AND TREAD COMING OFF IN LARGE PIECES. STARTED AS CRACKS THEN BEGAN FLYING OFF THE TIRES ON THE ROAD WHILE DRIVING. TIRES HAVE BEEN ROTATED AND INFLATION CHECKED REGULARLY. THE CAR HAS AN ALARM FOR TIRE INFLATION.

VEHICLE GAUGES TEND TO ALL GO OFF AND ALL DIALS GO DOWN AS IF VEHICLE ISN'T ON. THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONG VOLVOS AND THIS HASN'T BEEN RECALLED. I WAS DRIVING AT LEAST 70 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND THIS HAPPENED TO ME. *JS

THE DRIVER'S CONTROL DOOR MODULE (DDM) HAS FAILED (VERY COMMON ON THE S60). THIS MODULE CONTROLS THE WINDOWS, DOOR LOCKS, REAR-VIEW MIRRORS, AND CHILD-SAFETY LOCKS ON THE REAR DOORS. NOW, BOTH REAR DOORS ARE PERMANENTLY LOCKED, AND CAN ONLY BE OPENED WITH THE OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLES. I FEEL THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. A NEW REPLACEMENT UNIT FROM VOLVO WILL SOLVE THIS ISSUE, BUT VOLVO DEALERS CHARGE ABOUT $800. A USED DDM WILL NOT WORK, DUE TO THE SOFTWARE ADDRESSING SCHEME USED BY VOLVO.

HANDBOOK SAYS TRANSMISSION NEVER HAS TO BE SERVICED BUT IT IS NOT. TRANSMISSION SLIPS GOING IN AND OUT OF THIRD GEAR CAUSING HIGH REVS AND TIRE SPIN. I AM A MECHANIC AND THE ISSUES ARE THAT THIS TRANSMISSION HAS NO ACCESSIBLE FILTER WITHOUT REMOVING THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION AND NUMBER 4 SERVO CAP IS FAULTY DUE TO THE CAP BEING MADE OF ALUMINUM AND WASHER MADE OF STEEL.

THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 THE CONSUMER SMELLED FUEL ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH WOULD CEASE ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS STOPPED AND PLACED IN PARK. IT OCCURRED WHEN THE ACCELERATOR WAS PRESSED, WHICH IN TURN PUT PRESSURE ON THE FUEL LINE AND FUEL PUMP. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO FIND A PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER RECENTLY FOUND THE FUEL SMELL WORSENING AND A LOSS OF FUEL. A MECHANIC CHECKED OUT THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THE FUEL PUMP FLANGE WAS CRACKED. TOOK VEHICLE IN QUESTION TO MY MECHANIC DUE TO STARTING ISSUE AND FUEL SMELL. HE DIAGNOSED A SIGNIFICANT FUEL LEAK DUE TO A CRACKED FLANGE ON THE FUEL PUMP. HE FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM FOR THIS EXACT MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR OF VOLVO. CALLED VOLVO AND THEY REJECTED REQUEST FOR RECALL REPAIR DUE TO VIN NUMBER NOT BEING INCLUDED IN RECALL. I BELIEVE THIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO THE RECALL REGARDLESS OF THE VIN NUMBER BECAUSE IT HAS THE EXACT SAME DIAGNOSIS AS IS DESCRIBED BY THE RECALL. THE NOTION THAT A MAKER CAN EXCLUDE A VEHICLE WHICH EXHIBITS THE PROBLEMS TO BE FIXED BY A RECALL BASED ON EXTRANEOUS CRITERIA IS FUNDAMENTALLY FLAWED. NOTICED A BURNING SMELL WHILE DRIVING, AND SMOKE EMANATING FROM LEFT SIDE OF DRIVER'S SEAT. FELT AROUND AND MY HAND WAS BURNED. PULLED OVER TO FIND THAT THE HEATING ELEMENT INSIDE THE SEAT HAD BURNED THROUGH THE CUSHION AND LEATHER LEAVING A HOLE ON THE SIDE OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT. WHILE DRIVING IN THE DARK, POWER TO THE ELECTRONICS LISTED BELOW WERE LOST INEVITABLY AND MANY WARNING LIGHTS/MESSAGES APPEARED ON THE DASH (ALSO LISTED BELOW UNDER SYMPTOMS). THERE WERE NO WARNING SIGNS THAT THIS WAS ABOUT TO HAPPEN NOR IS THERE ANY EXPLANATION FOR WHY IT HAPPENED. I WAS DRIVING ON A DARK ROAD AND I LOST COMPLETE VISION OF THE ROAD DUE TO HEADLIGHT FAILURE (BOTH LOW AND HIGH BEAMS). THIS SCENARIO IS A COMMON SAFETY ISSUE ASSOCIATED WITH MANY OTHER SIMILAR VOLVO YEARS AND MODELS. I HAD TO STOP THE CAR IMMEDIATELY TO AVOID CRASHING AND CALL SOMEONE TO PICK ME UP. ALL SYMPTOMS FROM THIS "BLACKOUT" DID NOT AND HAVE NOT DISAPPEARED SINCE IT HAPPENED, MAKING THE CAR UNDRIVABLE. THESE SYMPTOMS ARE SUSPECT TO BE THE RESULT OF A CEM FAILURE, WHICH ALSO CONTROLS EMISSIONS. AS STATED PREVIOUSLY, THIS EXACT SCENARIO HAS CAUSED THOUSANDS OF SIMILAR VOLVO YEARS AND MODELS TO BE RECALLED/REPAIRED ON VOLVO'S BEHALF. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE MADE AND CAR SAT OVERNIGHT.THE VOLVO S60 RESTARTED IN THE MORNING. THE CAR RAN FINE FOR A DAY AND WOULD NOT START AGAIN. DEALERSHIP STATED THAT THE ANTENNA RING OR KEY CHIP MIGHT BE BAD. THE ANTENNA RING WAS CHANGED AND THE CAR WOULD NOT START A WEEK LATER AGAIN. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO DEALER SHIP AND PLACED ON SCANNER. THE CAR FUNCTION NORMALLY FOR TWO WEEKS AND DID NOT START AGAIN. SEVERAL BLOGS CONCERNING THIS MATTER HAVE BEEN SET UP WITHOUT ANY ANSWERS FOR THE CONSUMER. THE DEALERSHIPS SCANNED THE VEHICLE AND CHANGED PARTS AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. IN MY CASE THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT IT DID SHOW A PROBLEM. YET THE PROBLEM IS NOT FIXED.
