THERE WERE FOUR OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE. AS WE WERE DRIVING HOME FROM THE MALL, WE NOTICED A BRIEF INTERRUPTION IN THE LIGHTS AND RADIO. A FEW MILES DOWN THE ROAD, THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE AND THE CAR SHUT OFF IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO GET IT CRANKED BACK UP IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. WE DROVE APPROXIMATELY TWO MORE MILES AND PULLED INTO OUR DRIVEWAY AND SHUT THE CAR OFF. WE HEARD A SOUND LIKE AN ALARM, BUT IT WAS SO FAINT; BEFORE WE HAD TIME TO THINK ABOUT IT FURTHER, THE CAB BEGAN TO FILL WITH BLACKISH GREY SMOKE INTO THE BACKSEAT AREA. WE ALL GOT OUT QUICKLY AND WALKED TO THE BACK OF THE CAR. I NOTICED FLAMES BEHIND THE DRIVER SIDE TAIL LIGHT (WHERE THE BATTERY IS LOCATED) AND TOLD MY HUSBAND. HE OPENED THE TRUNK (BURNING HIS FINGERTIPS), AND FLAMES SHOT UP INTO THE AIR. I IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911 BECAUSE THE FLAMES WERE HIGH AND FAST-MOVING. THE 911 DISPATCHER INSTRUCTED US TO STAY AWAY FROM THE CAR AND NOT TRY TO PUT THE FIRE OUT DUE TO THE OBVIOUS DANGERS OF A FAST-MOVING CAR FIRE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT ARRIVED WITHIN FIVE MINUTES AND BEGAN PUTTING THE FIRE OUT; HOWEVER, THE CAR WAS A TOTAL LOSS UP TO THE ENGINE, WHICH WAS NOT BURNED. AFTER INSPECTION, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT DEEMED IT A LOSS DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL FIRE. I HAVE CONTACTED VOLVO, BUT THEY HAVE NOT RESPONDED TO ME AS OF YET. THERE HAVE BEEN SEVERAL RECALLS ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE, AND WE ARE WORRIED THAT VOLVO MAY HAVE MISSED ONE. FOR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS, I AM REPORTING THIS SAFETY HAZARD. THE CAR REMAINS IN OUR DRIVEWAY AWAITING INSURANCE ADJUSTMENT; HOWEVER, I AM HOPEFUL THAT EITHER VOLVO OR SOMEONE WHO DOES SAFETY INSPECTIONS WOULD CLAIM THE CAR TO INVESTIGATE THE CAUSE OF THE FIRE FURTHER. *TR
BEGAN TO NOTICE STRONG FUEL SMELL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE. ALSO NOTICED THAT STARTING THE VEHICLE WHEN ENGINE IS COLD BECAME MORE DIFFICULT. RESEARCHED VARIOUS FORUMS AND NHTSA AND DISCOVERED THAT VOLVO HAS HAD 2 RECALLS FOR FUEL PUMPS. MY VEHICLE EXHIBITED SAME SYMPTOMS AS DETAILED IN BOTH NHTSA RECALLS. CALLED VOLVO AT 800-458-1552 AS INSTRUCTED IN THE NHTSA RECALL NOTICE. INFORMED THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT VEHICLE EXHIBITED THE SYMPTOMS DETAILED IN THE RECALL NOTICE. I WAS INFORMED THAT MY VEHICLE VIN NUMBER WAS NOT PART OF RECALL. ALSO CONTACTED LOCAL VOLVO DEALER REGARDING RECALL NOTICE. DEALER WOULD DIAGNOSE PROBLEM - IF PART OF THE RECALL, THEY WOULD REPLACE. DEALER CALLED BACK, INFORMED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT PART OF RECALL. I CANCELLED APPOINTMENT FOR DIAGNOSIS. ANOTHER LOCAL REPAIR SHOP SPECIALIZING IN EUROPEAN VEHICLES VERIFIED THAT FUEL PUMP HAS CRACKS AND IS LEAKING FUEL. A FULL RECALL TO INCLUDE ALL VIN'S SHOULD BE ISSUED. THE FACT THAT THERE HAVE BEEN TWO PREVIOUS RECALLS FOR THE SAME ISSUE SHOWS THAT THERE IS A SYSTEMIC FLAW WITH THIS PART. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING 55 MPH WHEN THE SMELL OF FUEL EMITTED INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 86,635.
MY VOLVO S60 IS BECOMING DIFFICULT TO START AND IS BEGINNING TO SMELL LIKE GASOLINE. I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING ONLINE AND THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO BE THE FUEL FILTER. THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL IN OTHER STATES LIKE ARIZONA AND FLORIDA BUT APPARENTLY VOLVO HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL FOR CARS IN CALIFORNIA. IT IS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION TO DRIVE A CAR THAT IS LEAKING FUEL DUE TO A MANUFACTURES DEFECT REGARDLESS OF WHAT STATE YOU LIVE IN. I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST THAT THE NHTSA INSTRUCT VOLVO TO INCLUDE ALL STATES IN THE RECALL OF THE DEFECTIVE FUEL FILTER. PLEASE SEND ME ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THIS REQUEST. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLVO S60. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE CONTACT SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THERE WAS NO FUEL SEEN LEAKING ON THE GROUND. THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THERE WAS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V152000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP); HOWEVER THE CONTACT'S VIN WAS INELIGIBLE FRO REPAIRS UNDER THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT AND INFORMED THE OWNER THAT HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR EXPENSE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 155,000. THE CAR JUST BEGAN TO EMIT A FUEL SMELL WHILE PARKED. THE SMELL IS NEAR THE GAS TANK AND TENDS TO LINGER IN THE AIR DISSIPATE AND THEN RESURFACE. SOME TIMES ITS STRONG OTHER TIMES IT IS FAINT. IT ALSO TENDS TO COMES INTO THE INTERIOR COMPARTMENT AND CAN AT TIME BECOME OVER WHELMING CAUSING MY CHILDREN AND I TO GET HEADACHES AND NAUSEOUS. I COULD NOT FIND ANY PRESENCE OF A LEAK UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE NEAR THE AREA OF CONCERN. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND IS GARAGED MOST OF THE TIME. *TR
GAS IS LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK ON THE PASSENGER SIDE. STRONG FUEL ODOR INSIDE THE CAR. CAR IS HARD TO START. *TR
I AM A RESIDENT OF TEXAS. I JUST BOUGHT A 2002 VOLVO S60 ABOUT THREE MONTHS AGO, AND I'VE NOTICED A STRONG FUEL SMELL IN AND AROUND CAR. THERE IS A LEAK IN THE FUEL PUMP AND WHEN CAR IS PARKED, FUEL FORMS A PUDDLE UNDER CAR. IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE A CAR IN THIS CONDITION, BOTH FOR MYSELF BUT ALSO FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC. MFR'S REPORT DATE: DEC 17, 2009 NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V483000 NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE09039 COMPONENT: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP RECALL STATES THAT AS REMEDY FOR THIS ISSUE: "DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE FUEL PUMP INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE, AND IF NECESSARY REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP WITH A PART OF A MODIFIED DESIGN. THE CAR CONTINUES TO HAVE SHIFT FLARES AND SLIPPAGE WHEN SHIFTING UP FROM 1 TO 2, 2 TO 3 OR SHIFTING BETWEEN THE SAME GEARS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLVO S60. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THERE WAS AN UNUSUAL ODOR OF FUEL. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED FUEL LEAKING FROM THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL TANK FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V483000 (FUEL SYSTEM,GASOLINE). THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
PURCHASED USED S60 IN NOVEMBER 2011 WITH 137,000 MILES. A FEW WEEKS LATER VARIOUS PROBLEMS MANIFESTED: SCRAMBLED LETTERS IN DASHBOARD MESSAGE, DRIVER DOOR LOCKS INTERMITTENTLY WORKED, RADIO SELF TUNED TO DIFFERENT STATION, SPEEDOMETER GIVING FALSE READINGS OR STUCK AT CURRENT SPEED OR READING ZERO, FUEL GAUGE MALFUNCTION, ALL INSTRUMENTS ON PANEL FLICKERED, ALL INSTRUMENTS WENT "DARK" WHILE DRIVING. AT FIRST RESTARTING CAR WOULD CLEAR PROBLEM. THEN FREQUENCY BETWEEN FAILURES INCREASED. JUST BEFORE COMPLETE FAILURE - CAR NEEDED TO BE "COLD" FOR INSTRUMENTS TO WORK - WITH INSTRUMENTS FAILING ONCE ENGINE WARMED. FINALLY IN FEBRUARY 2012 AT ABOUT 147,021 MILES THE PANEL COMPLETELY FAILED WHILE DRIVING - GIVING DRIVER NO READINGS (SPEED, FUEL, TEMP, MILEAGE, OR WARNING INDICATORS) AND WOULD NOT RESET. INTERNET FORUMS OF VOLVO OWNERS SUGGESTED IT WAS A DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE FAILURE. OWNERS FORUMS PINPOINTED 3 PROBABLE CAUSES OF A DIM FAILURE - 1. LOOSE CONNECTION OF THE MOTOROLA MICROCHIP, 2. LOOSE CAPACITOR/RESISTOR 3. LACK OF PROTECTION FROM HEAT/HEAT TRANSFER TO INDIVIDUAL PRONGS IN MICROCHIP OR BETWEEN CAPACITOR/RESISTOR AND THE CIRCUIT BOARD. SOME ELECTRICALLY SAVVY OWNERS FIXED BY REFLOWING/RESOLDERING/HEAT PROTECTING SAID COMPONENTS. OUR LOCAL VOLVO DEALER CONFIRMED DIM FAILURE AND QUOTED APROX. $1500 FOR A NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND 3 HRS. LABOR. WE CHOSE TO SEND DIM/INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OUT FOR A REFURBISHMENT TO BAA REMANUFACTURING INC. ON REINSTALLATION WARNING MESSAGE READ "SRA/AIRBAG-SERVICE URGENT". ASKED DEALER TO CLEAR DIM CODE FIRST, THEN FROM SRS MODULE PER BAA-REMAN INSTRUCTIONS. DEALER JOB DESCRIPTION/RECEIPT STATED THEY CLEARED CODES DIM 0001, 0003, 0005, 0006, E003, SRS 00D4, E003. NO PROBLEMS WITH LOCKS/RADIO/INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SINCE REMANUFACTURE IN THE LAST 10,000 MILES/5 MONTHS. VOLVO'S ORIGINAL DIM CIRCUIT BOARD POORLY DESIGNED/ASSEMBLED. *TR

THE FUEL PUMP WAS REPLACED, BUT THE PADDING FOR THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT. THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT THEN BEGAN TO NOTICE A PUDDLE OF FUEL WOULD FORM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE WHEN IT WAS PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN BACK TO A DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. A WEEK AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS AGAIN TAKEN TO A DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO THE GAS CAP. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BEGAN TO ILLUMINATE AGAIN A FEW DAYS LATER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN BACK FOR ADDITIONAL REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND OFFERED NO ASSITANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 187,045.

INSTRUMENT CLUSTER (KNOWN AS DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE) COMPLETELY DIED WHILE DRIVING. CHECKED VOLVO FORUMS ONLINE AND SEE THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. REPLACEMENT IS THE ONLY OPTION. $1500. MANY PEOPLE ARE DRIVING WITHOUT KNOWING THEIR SPEED OR FUEL LEVEL. ME INCLUDED. CAN'T AFFORD $1500 REPAIR BILL. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ITEM. *TR
FROM AROUND OCT. OF 2011 I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING TROUBLE WITH MY THROTTLE BODY OR AS VOLVO CALLS IT 'ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE'. THESE PROBLEMS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, STALLING AT FREEWAY SPEEDS, ROUGH STARTING/ NOT STARTING AT ALL, REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE NOT ALLOWING FOR SAFE SPEED TO BE MAINTAINED, COSTLY REPAIR WORK WITH NO IMPROVEMENT, AND BOUTS OF SELF ACCELERATING AT STOPS WITH PARKING BRAKE AND FOOT BRAKE ENGAGED. I HAVE RESEARCH A VOLVO RECALL/ WARRANTY EXTENSION FOR A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY, CONTACTED VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE ONLY TO GET THE RUN-AROUND. VARIOUS WEB FORUMS ENCOURAGE OWNER EXPERIENCING THESE PROBLEMS TO FILE COMPLAINT WITH NHTSA TO HELP COME TO A RESOLUTION. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 152,000.

VOLVOS-60 24T TOOK CAR TO DEALER BILL GRAY VOLVO FOR ELECTRICAL PROBLEM AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH AIR BAG PASSIVE RESTRAINT SYSTEM INOPERABLE AND DEALER REFUSES TO CORRECT PROBLEM OR TO EVEN ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAME. *TR

THE CONTACT ALSO STATED THAT HE LOOKED UNDERNEATH THE REAR PASSENGER SEAT AND NOTICED THAT THE SURFACE WAS WET WITH FUEL. THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY INSPECTED BY AN AUTHORIZED DEALER UNDER THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V483000 (COMPONENT: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP), BUT THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS NOT ONE OF THE DEFECTIVE PARTS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN BACK TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 128,000.
THE VEHICLE JUST STOPS WHILE DRIVING, ALL OF THE PANEL LIGHTS COME ON CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS. HAD TO REPLACE THE OCM SENSOR AND THE ECM SENSOR MCKIVITT VOLVO IN SAN LEANDRO ([XXX]) SERVICE MGR. HAS NEVER MENTION ANY TYPE OF RECALLS TO THE CAR. THEY ALSO REPLACED THE FUEL INJECTION AT MY COST. HAD TO GET A SMOG IN AUG 2013, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME BACK ON NOT ALLOWING ME TO SMOG WITH OUT REPAIRS TO OXYGEN SENSORS, DURING THIS VISIT MY CONTROL ARMS WERE NOTICEABLY BROKEN, THEY SAID NOTHING. I FOUND OUT WHEN I GOT THE CAR BACK AFTER THEM CHANGING THE OXYGEN SENSORS TO PASS SMOG AND I GOT THE SMOG AND A OIL CHANGE THEY NOTIFIED ME, I HAD THEM REPLACED BY A CHEAPER MECH IN APRIL 2014 @ 75,000 MILES. NOW IT'S AUGUST 2014 AND I WAS DRIVING DOWN VERY STEEP HILL@ 45MPH AND THE CAR JUST SHUT OFF CAUSING LIMP MODE AND ME HITTING A CURB TO STOP. TOWED BACK TO DEALERSHIP@ 84,601 MILES AND BEING TOLD IT'S NORMAL, CLEAN OR REPLACE THE ETM SENSOR NOW CHARGING ME $2,000. I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED RECALL. I'M LOST NOW WITHOUT A VEHICLE. ISN'T VOLVO SUPPOSED TO FIX THIS ISSUE OR DO WE HAVE TO DIE AND THEN YEARS LATER YOU GUYS AT VOLVO CORPORATION FIGURE THERE WAS A MALFUNCTION.. PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHAT TO DO??? ALL THIS SERVICE MANAGER WANTS IS MONEY AND DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYONE'S SAFETY. I WAS LAUGHED AT TODAY BEING TOLD THAT OH YOU'VE ONLY TRAVEL 25,000 MI AND I'VE SEEN YOU 4 TIMES SINCE THEN, IT'S NOT A HONDA AND YOU REALLY HAVE TO PUT SOME MUSCLE INTO IT WHEN IT DOES THIS LIMP MODE. I WAS SCARED TO DEATH ALONG WITH MY FAMILY AND WAS LAUGHED AT IN MY FACE WITH A SMILE TELLING ME HE'LL CALL AND TELL ME HOW MUCH$$$. IT LOOSENS IT SO MUCH THAT THE CHILD RESTRAINT MOVES MORE THAN 1" FROM SIDE-TO-SIDE AND FRONT/BACK. HE DID THIS WHILE WE WERE DRIVING. WHEN I HAD INITIALLY PLACED HIM IN HIS CHILD RESTRAINT, THERE WAS A TIGHT INSTALLATION (I ALWAYS CHECK), BUT WHEN WE ARRIVED AT OUR DESTINATION, IT WAS VERY LOOSE WHEN I TOOK HIM OUT. THAT'S WHEN I NOTICED THAT HOW HE PUTS HIS FOOT ON THE TILT LOCK MECHANISM. SHE SAID THAT THE NEW RADIANS MADE AFTER FEBRUARY 2011 ARE EQUIPPED WITH THE NEW UPDATED SUPERLATCH. THEY HAVE ADDED A RETAINER CLIP TO ALL TILT LOCK MECHANISMS ON THE SUPERLATCH WHICH CHANGES THE RELEASE ANGLE AND PREVENTS ANY LOOSENING. THEY ALSO OFFER THE UPDATED TILT LOCK MECHANISM TO ANY CUSTOMER WHO HAS A CONCERN ABOUT THEIR SUPERLATCH. I FEEL THAT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL, BECAUSE THERE MAY BE MANY CUSTOMERS WHO ARE UNAWARE OF THIS DEFECT. WHEN THE CCM FIRST STARTED DOING THIS VOLVO THOUGHT IT WAS MY A/C COMPRESSOR AND I SPENT $1,200 ON A NEW A/C COMPRESSOR HOPING THAT WOULD FIX MY PROBLEM. IT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM AND THE RESULT IS I GET VERY HOT IN MY CAR WHEN IT TURNS OFF WHILE IM DRIVING AND I HAVE TO KEEP FIDDLING WITH IT WHILE DRIVING TO MAKE IT STAY ON. *TT
I HAD 5 INCIDENTS WHILE I WAS DRIVING THAT MY VEHICLE GOT OUT THE CONTROL AFTER NOTICED THE ANTI-SKID LIGHT MESSAGE CAME ON. I HEAR THE SAME SITUATION TO OTHER PEOPLE AS WELL. I WENT TO VOLVO ABOUT THE ANTI-SKID SITUATION AND THEY FOUND AND A FACTORY FAULT IN THE BRAKE CONTROL MODULE THAT CAUSE FAILURE TO THE STEERING ANGLE SENSOR. I KNOW THIS IS A FACTORY FAILURE AND MALFUNCTION ISSUE FROM VOLVO. THE PART IS AVAILABLE BUT THEY DECLINED TO BE RESPONSIBLE ABOUT THIS MATTER. *TR
I PRESENTLY OWN A 2002 VOLVO S60 SEDAN. ON OCTOBER 14TH, 2009, AT APPROX. 5:30 AM, THE FRONT DRIVERS SIDE BALL JOINT SEPARATED FROM MY VEHICLE, CAUSING FAILURE OF MY UPPER BALL JOINT, THEN SEPARATING MY CV JOINT AND SHAFT FROM MY TRANSMISSION. THIS IN TURN, CAUSED EXTENSIVE BODY DAMAGE TO MY VEHICLE. I THANK GOD, THAT I WAS ONLY TRAVELING 20 MILES PER HOUR. IF I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY, I WOULD NOT BE WRITING THIS TODAY. I NOTIFIED DALZELL VOLVO IN DEDHAM, MASS. AND ALSO FILED A CLAIM WITH VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA, CLAIM NUMBER 376672. MY CLAIM FOR REIMBURSEMENT OF REPAIRS WAS DENIED BY MR. JOHN WILLETS OF VOLVO. I AM VERY CONCERNED FOR ALL THE OTHER OWNERS OF THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE. WHEELS SHOULD NOT BREAK OFF WHILE DRIVING. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ACTIVATED WHEN IT SUDDENLY FAILED WITHOUT WARNING AND WOULD ONLY BLOW OUTSIDE AIR INTO THE VEHICLE CABIN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE COMPRESSOR AND RECEIVER DRYER WOULD NEED REPLACING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. STRONG FUEL SMELL, ESPECIALLY WHEN STANDING BESIDE THE CAR. DEALERSHIP IS UNSURE WHAT THE PROBLEM IS, BUT MECHANIC NOTICED GAS LEAKING ABOVE THE TANK. THERE ARE MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME OR SIMILAR PROBLEMS (SEE ONLINE VOLVO FORUMS), AND A NATIONWIDE RECALL MIGHT BE APPROPRIATE. I URGE THE AGENCY, AND PUT IT ON NOTICE, THAT FAILURE TO ACT MIGHT RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT THAT COULD BE FATAL. *TR
