TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD OR IF THE CONTACT INADVERTENTLY HIT THE KEY, THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL. THE LATEST FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. UPDATED 10/30/14*LJ UPDATED 04/27/2015 *JS
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AROUND 50 MPH THE XC90 SKIPPED AND TEMPORARILY TURNED OFF ALL ELECTIONS. THOUGHT IT WAS A GLITCH SO CONTINUED DOWN THE ROAD MORE CAREFULLY. THEN IT HAPPENED AGAIN AND THE ELECTRONICS NEVER CAME BACK ON. I COULDN'T MAKE IT UP A SMALL HILL ON THE ROAD TO GET SAFELY HOME. MY TRANSMISSION WOULDN'T PULL. THE SPEED GAUGE AND RPMS WERE COMPLETELY UNWORKING. WINDOWS WOULD NOT ROLL DOWN AIR HAD WENT OUT. POWER STEERING TEMPORARILY WENT OUT. MADE IT HOME FINALLY AND NOTHING SEEMS WRONG NOW BUT THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM THAT NEEDS TO BE FIXED. I COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN IN A WREAK OR STRANDED ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH MY BABIES. VOLVO NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. *TR
3 HOURS INTO A 3-1/2 HOUR WEEKEND ROAD TRIP THERE WAS A CLUNK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THINKING I HIT A POTHOLE, I CONTINUED ON CAUTIOUSLY. WHILE CONTINUING ON THESE UNFAMILIAR 2 LANE WINDY ROADS GOING 43MPH (THE SPEED LIMIT WAS 55) ABOUT 2 MILES FROM WHERE THE CLUNK HAPPENED MY ENTIRE DASH CLUSTER STOPPED WORKING. ALL MY DOME LIGHTS AND LEG LIGHTS CAME ON. THE CAR CLUNKED HARDER THIS TIME. I LOST POWER TO THE ENGINE, STEERING WAS LIKE TRYING TO TURN A TANK, AND THE BRAKES WERE VERY SPONGY. STILL TRAVELING ON WINDY ROADS WITH LARGE SEMI TRUCKS BEHIND ME AND CARS PASSING BY IN THE OPPOSITE LANE I VEERED TO THE RIGHT TO AVOID BEING REAR ENDED BY A SEMI. NOT BEING ABLE TO STEER OR STOP AS EFFICIENTLY AS BEFORE I COASTED INTO A RESIDENTS 2-3 MAN ROCK LANDSCAPE TRAVELING AT ABOUT 5MPH. I DENTED MY FRONT LICENSE PLATE AND SCRATCHED THE BUMPER. WITH MY HEART POUNDING, I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND GOT OUT TO SEE THE DAMAGE. I WENT TO THE RESIDENTS HOME AND TOLD THEM MY STORY. THEY WERE THANKFUL MY FIANC AND I WERE OKAY. SINCE I HIT ROCK THERE WAS NO DAMAGE DONE TO THEIR LANDSCAPE. AFTER 20 MINUTES I STARTED THE CAR. IT WAS HESITANT TO START. THE BRAKE FAILURE LIGHT WAS ON FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN THE SRS SERVICE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND STAYED ON. FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE WEEKEND TRIP THE CAR WOULD LURCH LIKE THE TRANNY WAS SLIPPING. ESPECIALLY AFTER TAKING OFF FROM A STOP LIGHT. IT STILL CLUNKS ONCE IN AWHILE BUT WE ONLY DRIVE IT AROUND TOWN. IT'S CURRENTLY AT A CERTIFIED VOLVO SPECIALIST BEING SERVICED. THIS MORNING ALL LIGHTS STOPPED WORKING AND I COULDN'T GET IT OUT OF THE GARAGE. THE KEY STUCK IN THE IGNITION. IN CONCLUSION, THIS MISHAP COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS INJURY OR FATALITY. IF EVERY CAR OF THIS MAKE AND MODEL IS DOING THIS, THEY NEED TO BE RECALLED AND REPAIRED! *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 70 MPH, A LOUD ABNORMAL NOISE EMITTED FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE LOST ELECTRICAL POWER BRIEFLY. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS AN ELECTRICAL MODULE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.

ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS, OUR VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AFTER STOPPING FOR GAS. THIS OCCURRED AFTER IT WAS SERVICED AND BATTERY REPLACED A WEEK PRIOR. AAA WAS UNABLE TO JUMP START IT AS WELL, AND VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED BACK TO DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIRS. ACCORDING TO THE TWO SEPARATE DEALERSHIPS, THE CENTRAL ELECTRONICS MODULE IS THE CULPRIT, AND NEEDED REPLACING. ACROSS MULTIPLE ONLINE FORUMS, VOLVO OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THE CEM, OFTEN PLACING DRIVERS AND OCCUPANTS IN DANGER AS THEY EXPERIENCED COMPLETE ELECTRICAL OUTAGE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. WE WERE FORTUNATELY THAT OUR VEHICLE JUST DID NOT RESTART, INSTEAD OF SHUTTING DOWN IN TRAFFIC AT 65 MPH. THIS IS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE, AND VOLVO SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING THE FAULTY UNITS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING, CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING AND URGENT TRANSMISSION REQUIRED LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK IT TO DEALERSHIP TODAY AND WAS TOLD A NEW TRANSMISSION IS NEEDED; TOTAL COST $6800. I KNOW THIS YEAR AND MODEL VEHICLE HAS HAD SEVERAL ISSUES WITH TRANSMISSION. WHEN I CALLED VOLVO, THEY SAID NOTHING COULD BE DONE. *TR
THE IGNITION TURNS TO THE ACCESSORY POSITION IF THE KEY IS BUMPED, WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN GEAR. THE VEHICLE LOSES POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST YEAR. *TR
STRONG GASOLINE ODOR OUTSIDE AND AT TIMES INSIDE THE CAR. RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND FOUND THAT THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL IN 2010 FOR THIS SAME ISSUE RELATED TO THE FUEL PUMP, BUT IT ONLY COVERED CERTAIN STATES. DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN MINNESOTA IT WAS NOT COVERED IN THE RECALL AND I WAS NEVER NOTIFIED OF THE DEFECT. NHTSA INVESTIGATION FAULTED A DESIGN ISSUE WITH THE FUEL PUMP COMBINED WITH TEMPERATURE VARIATIONS. APPARENTLY 90F TO -20F TEMPERATURE SWINGS IN MINNESOTA WAS NOT DEEMED SUFFICIENT TO BE INCLUDED OR NOTIFIED ABOUT THE RECALL. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILED AND THE INSTRUMENTAL PANEL BECAME DARK AS THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE A DIAGNOSTIC WAS PERFORMED. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THAT THE ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE FAILED DUE TO WATER INTRUSION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 115,000.
HIT ANOTHER CAR FROM BEHIND BEFORE A RED TRAFFIC LIGHT. TRIED THE BEST TO STOP MY 2004 XC90, BUT SEEMED I LOST THE BRAKE (FULLY OR PARTIALLY) AND WAS NOT ABLE TO STOP IT TO AVOID THE COLLISION. ALTHOUGH I DID ALL MY BEST TO BRAKE IT, DID NOT FEEL ABS AT ALL. I WAS NOT DRIVING FAST, 10 - 30 MPH, MAYBE. THE WEATHER WAS PRETTY NICE, SUNNY AND DRY. NORTHERN NJ. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 45 MPH, HE SMELLED FUEL INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER AND NOTICED THAT HE HAD A LEAK. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER BUT THE CAUSE OF FAILURE WAS UNKNOWN. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 188,215.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT UPON INSPECTION, FUMES COMING FROM THE FUEL PUMP ENTERED THE VEHICLE WHEN PARKED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH ON I-5 WE HEARD A LOUD THUMP IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND WE SUDDENLY WENT TO ABOUT 25 MPH ALL OF OUR ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS SHUT DOWN, THERE WAS AN EXTREMELY LOUD GRINDING SOUND FOR APPROX. 2-3 SECONDS. NOW I THINK MY TRANSMISSION IS DAMAGED AND THE ELECTRONICS SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN PRETTY FREQUENTLY. I AM TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED TO READ THAT THIS HAS HAPPENED TO NUMEROUS OTHER FAMILIES. THANK GOD NO ONE HAS DIED FROM THIS.....THIS IS VERY IRRESPONSIBLE AND NEGLIGENT FROM A REPUTABLE AUTO COMPANY. IS IT GOING TO TAKE SOMEONE OR FAMILY TO GET SERIOUSLY INJURED OR DIE BEFORE THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THIS VERY SERIOUS ISSUE. ITS TIME FOR SOMEONE TO BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR THIS. *JS
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH, THE VEHICLE MOMENTARILY LOST POWER WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TECHNICIAN COULD NOT DIAGNOSE A FAILURE HOWEVER, THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 105,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 109,000.
ENGINE PASSENGER SIDE CAUGHT FIRE IN THE AN ELECTRICAL COMPONENT, FLAMES SHOOTING OUT THE WHEEL WELL. OTHER DRIVERS FLAGGED TO PULL OVER, TURNED OFF IGNITION KEY AND REMOVED TO GET OUT OF VEHICLE. ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OFF, CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT TO EXTINGUISH THE FIRE FOR FEAR OF EXPLOSION. FIRE DEPARTMENT USED AN AX TO STOP THE ENGINE. CAR WAS TOTALED. NO ONE WAS INJURED. *TR
FOR ABOUT 2 MONTHS NOW I HAVE BEEN SMELLING LOUD ODORS OF GAS/FUEL INSIDE THE CAR COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF MY 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE SMELL IS BECOMING UNBEARABLE CAUSING HEADACHES. I HAD MY HUSBAND LOOK UNDER MY CAR TO SEE IF THERE WAS AN OBVIOUS LEAK. HE NOTICED THAT THE SIDE OF THE FUEL TANK WAS WET, HE WIPED THE TANK OFF MAKING IT DRY DROVE THE CAR AROUND A COUPLE BLOCKS PARKED IT & CHECKED UNDER THE CAR AGAIN, THE TANK WAS WET ON THE SIDE OF THE FUEL TANK AGAIN WITH FUEL LEAKING FROM SOMEWHERE. AGAIN NO OBVIOUS SPOT OR LOCATION OF THE LEAK WAS SEEN & ITS NOT A BAD LEAK WHEREAS YOU CAN SEE IT DRIPPING, BUT IT IS LEAKING FROM SOMEWHERE. MY CAR IS ALSO EXPERIENCING A SLOW SLUGGISH START IN MY OPINION DUE TO THE FUEL ISSUE. I'VE DONE SOME RESEARCH & FOUND OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH CERTAIN VOLVO'S (01-05 S80, 01-04 V70/S60/XC70, 03-05 XC90) WHEN EXPOSED TO CERTAIN ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION FOR EXAMPLE HOT CLIMATES & TEMPERATURES. WHEN VOLVO VEHICLES ARE EXPOSED TO THESE CONDITIONS IN COMBINATION WITH FUEL QUALITY THERE'S A HIGHER/GREATER CHANCE THAT THE FUEL PUMP CAN DEVELOP/BECOME CRACKED, DAMAGED, OR PINCHED IN THE FUEL PUMP FLANGE OF WHICH CAUSES AN AIR LEAK IN THE FUEL VAPOR SYSTEM. ALSO 2004 XC90 MODELS HAS THE MOST OVERALL COMPLAINTS. I NEED MORE INFO ON HOW & WHERE VOLVO CAN FIX THIS ISSUE BECAUSE AGAIN UPON RESEARCHING THIS VOLVO HAS DONE A MAJOR RECALL FOR A FAULTY FUEL PUMP OF WHICH INCLUDES MY CAR BASED OFF INFO I HAVE FOUND. WAS DRIVING IN NEIGHBORHOOD AT ABOUT 20 MPH, WHEN RADIO SHUT OFF AND THEN ALL ELECTRICAL SHUT OFF, CAR DID NOT RESPOND TO EITHER GAS OR BRAKES, THEN THERE WAS A THUMP FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR, WHICH BROUGHT THE DASH LIGHTS BACK ON. I THEN WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER AND TURN OFF CAR. RESTARTED THE CAR AND THERE WERE A SLEW OF ERROR MESSAGES ON THE DASH, INCLUDING A BRAKE WARNING. ATTEMPTED TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE CAR, ISSUE HAPPENED AGAIN AND AGAIN ON MY DRIVE HOME. VERY UNSAFE TO BE DRIVING AND NOT SURE IF YOUR BRAKES OR STEERING ARE GOING TO CUT OUT. DID SOME RESEARCH WHEN I GOT HOME AND REALIZED THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED ISSUE WITH THE CEM OF VOLVOS. I HOPE NHTSA IS INVESTIGATING. IF THIS HAPPENS TO SOMEONE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IT COULD BE A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
BOTH HEADLIGHTS WENT OUT AT THE SAME TIME. I WAS ON INTERSTATE 77 BOTH LIGHTS WENT OUT DIDN'T KNOW IT UNTIL I WAS BEHIND A CAR THE ONLY LIGHTS WERE ON WERE MY FOG LIGHTS. *TR
ON JUNE 2013, MY INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES BOTH FRONT AND BACK ALL BEGAN TO BREAK. ALL INTERIOR DOOR HANDLES BOTH FRONT AND BACK BEGAN TO BRAKE AROUND A 2 1/2 MONTH PERIOD, AT DIFFERENT TIMES WHILE I WAS EXITING MY CAR. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. ALL HANDLES BREAKING AROUND THE SAME TIME. I HAVE TO NOW LOWER MY WINDOW AND REACH THREW THE OUTSIDE TO OPEN THE DOOR. THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AND RECALLED. WHAT I HAVE READ ONLINE, I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE A NUMEROUS AMOUNT OF VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ISSUE. THIS CAN BE A HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. WHAT IS THE WINDOWS FAIL TO WORK NEXT. HOW WOULD I GET OUT OF MY VEHICLE IF THERE'S A ACCIDENT, AND I AM TRAPPED INSIDE. DOES VOLVO NOT CARE FOR THERE MISTAKES. PLEASE ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND RECALL IT ASAP TO FIX THE PROBLEM. AFTER SEVERAL HOURS OF DRIVING IN THE GEORGIA / NORTH CAROLINA MOUNTAINS WITH THE WIFE AND 2 KIDS IN THE BACK, THE AIR-CONDITIONER AND RADIO ON WITH THE 2004 XC90, THE CAR STARTED EXPERIENCING WEIRD BEHAVIOR. SHORTLY AFTER CROSSING THE GEORGIA BORDER INTO THE MOUNTAINS OF NORTH CAROLINA THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE UNDER THE HOOD OF THE CAR AND THE VEHICLE JERKED VIOLENTLY. THE CAR IMMEDIATELY LOST ALL ELECTRICAL POWER (NO DASHBOARD, HAZARD LIGHTS, BLINKERS, WINDOWS AND DOOR LOCKS, SUNROOF, ETC.). THE DRIVE TRAIN ALSO SEEMED STUCK IN A HIGH GEAR AND WOULD NOT DOWNSHIFT WHICH MADE NORMAL DRIVING CLOSE TO IMPOSSIBLE ESPECIALLY ON MOUNTAIN ROADS. ABOUT 15 MINUTES LATER, THE CAR MADE THE VIOLENT NOISE AGAIN UNDER THE HOOD AGAIN AND JERKED VIOLENTLY AGAIN. LUCKILY THERE WAS AN AUTOZONE IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT AND I HAD THEM READ THE ENGINE CODES WHICH WAS ONLY SHOWING A 'DSTC FAILURE' (DASHBOARD WAS NON-FUNCTIONAL). I DECIDED TO REPLACE THE BATTERY WITH A NEW ONE IN HOPES THAT THE FAILURE WAS BECAUSE OF A WEAK BATTERY TRICKING THE COMPUTER TO GO INTO SURVIVAL MODE. UPON RESTARTING THE CAR, POWER WAS RESTORED TO THE CABIN (AC, RADIO, AND DASH WERE ALL WORKING AGAIN) AND THERE WAS NOW A 'SRS AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT' MESSAGE WHICH I COULDN'T CLEAR FROM THE DASH, NOR COULD THE TOOL FROM AUTOZONE DETECT OR CLEAR VIA THE PLUG TO THE COMPUTER PORT. THERE WERE NO ENGINE CODES IN THE AUTOZONE COMPUTER AFTER THE BATTERY CHANGE BUT WE STILL HAD THE SRS WARNING LIGHT / MESSAGE ON THE DASH. THE NEXT DAY, WE HAD THE SAME ISSUE ABOVE DRIVING HOME FROM OUR DESTINATION. WE WERE HOPING THAT NEW BATTERY WOULD SOLVE THE ISSUE, BUT I NOW BELIEVE IT'S THE CEM. CAR IS GOING TO THE DEALER TOMORROW TO INVESTIGATE SINCE OF COURSE IT HAPPENED ON MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND NOTHING WAS OPEN OTHER THAN SOME STORES. *TR

I WAS DRIVING MY XC90 2004 AND SUDDENLY THE UNIT JUST TURNED OFF COMPLETELY. I HAD TO CONTINUE DRIVING WITH THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ANY KIND OF POWER. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT 60 MILES AN HOUR AND THE CAR COMPLETELY SHUT OFF. NO LIGHTS, NO ENGINE, NO POWER STEERING, NO DASH LIGHTS. THE CAR WENT COMPLETELY DEAD. I PULLED OVER AND LET THE CAR REST AND THEN IT STARTED UP AGAIN. I NOTICED THE SECOND TIME IT HAPPENED WHEN I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR. TODAY, WE LEARNED OUR VOLVO XC90'S YAW RATE SENSOR HAS FAILED. THE ROOT CAUSE WAS WATER LEAKING INTO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE CAR DUE TO BLOCKED MOONROOF (I.E. SUNROOF) DRAINS, WHICH SHORTED THE YAW RATE SENSOR. THIS IMPAIRED THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL AND BRAKES OF OUR VOLVO, PUTTING US AT RISK OF ACCIDENT. RESEARCH SHOWS THIS IS A FREQUENT AND RECURRING PROBLEM KNOWN SINCE AT LEAST 2004. IT HAS CAUSED THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS IN DAMAGE TO NUMEROUS XC90S. VOLVO IS AWARE OF THIS ISSUE UP TO AND INCLUDING THE PRESIDENT OF VOLVO USA. EVEN THOUGH EASY AND INEXPENSIVE REGULAR MAINTENANCE WOULD PREVENT EXPENSIVE DAMAGE, NEITHER THE VOLVO USER MANUAL NOR MAINTENANCE SERVICE OPERATIONS GUIDES MENTION THE NEED. THE DAMAGE WE AND OTHERS HAVE SUFFERED WAS COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE. THE ROOT CAUSE IS A DESIGN DEFECT, WHICH VOLVO SERVICE PROVIDERS REGULARLY CORRECT BY CUTTING THE BOTTOM END OF THE HOSES. The contact owns a 2004 Volvo XC90. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle, his wife noticed an abnormally strong gasoline odor. The contact's wife was able to continue driving the vehicle; however, the failure would return after refueling or on rainy days. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V483000 (Fuel System, Gasoline) however, the VIN was not included. The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.

SO AFTER DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH I FIND OUT THAT THIS IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THE VOLVO XC 90 AND THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION ON THIS SAME ISSUE IN NOVEMBER 2010 IN WHICH VOLVO IS FULLY AWARE OF AND "ACKNOWLEDGES A PROBLEM AFFECTING SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES INVOLVING WATER SEEPAGE INTO THE PLENUM BOX AREA IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. WHEN THIS OCCURS WATER MAY ENTER INTO THE INTERIOR PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND TRACK ALONG THE WIRING HARNESS FOR THE CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE, THE DEVICE THAT CONTROLS MANY OF THE VEHICLES ELECTRICAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDING WIPER OPERATION, LIGHTING, AND TRANSMISSION OPERATION. BACK IN SEPTEMBER OF 2012 MY CAR STARTED STALLING OFF AND ON. IT CAN HAPPEN SEVERAL TIMES A DAY OR ONCE A WEEK OR ONCE A MONTH. I HAVE PUT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS INTO TRYING TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM WITH NO SUCCESS. I FINALLY TOOK MY CAR TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED MY CAR IN 2003. ON A MORE RECENT VISIT DEALER SAYS CAR NEEDS A INSTRUMENT PANEL MODULE REPLACEMENT AT A COST OF $1,500. ACCORDING TO MY ONLINE RESEARCH, THIS COMPLAINT IS BY FAR THE MOST PREVALENT PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR AND MODEL BY MAYBE A 20 TO 1 MARGIN. *TR
FRONT LIGHTS GO OFF GOT A TICKET FOR THAT REASON AND ONLY THRU THAT TICKET DID I KNOW THAT THE LIGHTS GO OFF IT HAPPENS ONCE IN A WHILE AND WHEN SO I HAVE TO GO TO SIDE OF THE ROAD AND TURN CAR OFF AND TURN ON AGAIN, WONT HAPPEN FOR A PERIOD AND THEN SURPRISE IT HAPPENS AGAIN.WE BOUGHT THE CAR USED AND WE DONT KNOW IF THERE IS ANY RECALLS IT MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN TAKEN CARE OF. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON A 40MPH BUSY ROAD, MY CD PLAYER DISPLAY BEGAN TO FLASH, THEN A FEW SECONDS LATER, MY SRS AIR BAG SERVICE URGENT MESSAGE CAME ON. EVERYTHING CONTINUED TO FLASH AND THEN ALL MY INSTRUMENTS (SPEEDOMETER, REV COUNTER, TURN SIGNALS) ALL DIED. LUCKY I WAS PASSING MY DEALER WHO I JUST BOUGHT THE CAR FROM AND ABLE TO TURN INTO IT. AFTER BRAKING, I COULD NOT ACCELERATE THE CAR AND HAD TO LET THE MOMENTUM CARRY ME INTO TO THE LOT. I HAVE HAD THE CAR FOR 5 DAYS NOW. I NOTICED ON THE FIRST DAY THAT SIMPLE THINGS WERE NOT QUITE RIGHT, INCLUDING MY MIRROR BUTTON ONLY WORKING HALF THE TIME AS WELL AS MY WINDOW CONTROL. ALSO MY WIPERS WOULD TURN ON RANDOMLY. THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR AND MODEL CAR IF YOU READ ANY VOLVO FORUMS. IT SEEMS IT HAS HAPPENED TO ENOUGH PEOPLE THAT THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE ELECTRONICS OF THIS CAR. PEOPLE'S SAFETY ARE GREAT RISK WITH THE FAILURE OF THESE SAID ITEM IN THE CAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, ALL OF THE WARNING LAMPS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ILLUMINATED AND THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE AND ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE WERE FAULTY AND BOTH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE DEALER. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 91,000.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY MY VEHICLE HICCUPED INTERMITTENTLY THREE TIMES AND THEN THE ELECTRONIC PANEL, WINDOWS, LOCKS, RADIO, A/C, SIGNALS, HAZARDS ALL SHUT DOWN AND A MESSAGE ABOUT THE BRAKES CAME ON. I WAS NEAR THE DEALERSHIP SO I STOPPED IN AND DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM. WITH A SMIRK ON HIS FACE THE SERVICE CONSULTANT SAID IT WOULD COST $85.00 FOR DIAGNOSTICS AND THEN HE WOULD GIVE ME A COST ESTIMATE OF THE REPAIR. THEY WERE BUSY AND HE SAID THAT HE DIDN'T THINK THAT THEY COULD GET TO IT THAT DAY SO I DECIDED TO TAKE MY CHANCES AND DRIVE TO MY OWN MECHANIC. TO MY SURPRISE WHEN I STARTED MY CAR ALL POWER CAME BACK ON AND A MESSAGE TO GET MY AIR BAG CHECKED. WHEN I ARRIVED AT MY SERVICE STATION THE MECHANIC PUT IT ON DIAGNOSTICS (FREE) AND COULDN'T FIND ANY ERROR CODES SO HE RESET THE CAR COMPUTER. EVERYTHING WAS FINE UNTIL JULY 12 WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME I WAS DRIVING AT NIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY ABOUT 65MPH, MY WIFE WITH ME, WHEN WE GOT QUITE A SCARE WHEN THE CAR HICCUPED. WE LOST ALL POWER AGAIN BUT FORTUNATELY OUR HEADLIGHTS AND REAR LIGHTS STAYED ON. WE DROVE SLOWLY AND ARRIVED SAFELY HOME. WHAT A SCARE! OUR MECHANIC PUT IT ON DIAGNOSTICS AGAIN, FOUND NOTHING AND RESET THE CAR COMPUTER AGAIN. HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT'S CAUSING THE PROBLEM (PROBABLY A COMPUTER ISSUE) AND TOLD ME I SHOULD TAKE IT TO A DEALER. CHECKING SIMILAR COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET THIS SEEMS TO BE QUITE A PROBLEM WITH NO FIX. WE FEAR FOR OUR SAFETY DRIVING THE CAR AND GOING ANY LONG DISTANCE. HELP! *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO HAVE A DIAGNOSTIC PERFORMED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 101,000.

DRIVING ON STREET AND ENGINE JUST DIED, NO REASON CAN THINK OF, NO ENGINE LIGHT OR MESSAGE IN TEXT. HAPPENED AGAIN 2-3 WEEKS (YESTERDAY) WHILE SLOWING DOWN FOR STREET ACCIDENT, LOST ALL POWER, HAD TO STOP CAR WITHOUT POWER STEERING OR BRAKES, PUT IN PARK AND STARTED AGAIN. NO PROBLEM AFTERWARDS AND DROVE HOME. TOOK TO VOLVO DEALER TODAY WHERE I REGULARLY GO AND OF COURSE NO REASON FOUND FOR TWO TIME FAILURE. LUCKILY NOT DRIVING ON FREEWAY OR MAY HAVE BEEN REAR-ENDED DUE TO ENGINE FAILURE. QUITE SCARED NOW TO DRIVE - WHEN IS IT GONNA HAPPEN AGAIN? 111,500 MILES - HAS HAD NEW TRANSMISSION 2 YEARS AGO AND MAJOR SERVICE SEVERAL MONTHS AGO. SERVICE MANAGER HAS NO IDEA, RECOMMENDED THROTTLE CLEANING FOR $400+ DOLLARS AND NOT EVEN SURE THAT IS CLOSE TO PROBLEM. *TR
THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING. ENGINE REVS AND THE TRANSMISSION WON'T UPSHIFT...EVENTUAL GEAR CHANGE CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO LURCH FORWARD A BIT, WITH A LOUD THUD HEARD. THE VEHICLE ALSO FAILS TO MOVE OFF FROM A STOP ON OCCASION...WITH THE ENGINE REVVING FOR A WHILE BEFORE MOVING FORWARD. DISPLAY MESSAGE IN THE CLUSTER: "TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT"...GOES OFF AND ON FOR DAYS AT A TIME. *TR
DROVE TO THE GROCERY STORE ON SATURDAY MORNING, CAR WAS FINE. WHEN I CAME OUT, I COULDN'T UNLOCK THE VEHICLE WITH THE FOB, I HAD TO USE THE KEY TO OPEN THE DRIVERS DOOR. THEN I TRIED TO OPEN THE LOCKS AND WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. THE CAR DID START, BUT HAD NO DASH INFO (NOTHING WORKED), AC, RADIO DID NOT WORK EITHER, FRONT WINDOWS ONLY WORKED, REAR DID NOT. I LIMPED HOME BECAUSE THE CAR DID NOT HAVE ANY POWER. HAD IT FLATBEDDED TO VOLVO DEALER ON MONDAY, 6/4/12 AND THEY STILL HAVEN'T DETERMINED WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. HAD THIS SAME ISSUE (ONLY WORSE) IN 2008 AND THEY FINALLY REPLACED (SO THEY SAID) THE COMPUTER. AT THE TIME OF THE 2008 INCIDENT, THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD APPROX. 33K MILES. NOW IN 2012, IT HAS 53K! 20K ADDITIONAL MILES AND STILL ISSUE STILL EXISTS EVEN WITH REPLACED COMPUTER! *JS
