TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE CONTACT NOTICED A LOUD THUMPING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE FOLWED BY THE ILLUMINATION OF ALL WARNING LIGHTS INCLUDING THE CHECK ENGINE, ABS AND SRS WARNING LIGHTS. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO RUN; HOWEVER, ALL THE ELECTRICAL POWER FAILED. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO BRING THE VEHICLE IN FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT DID NOT INFORM THE MANUFACTURER SINCE HE WAS AWAITING A SERVICE APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE HEADLIGHTS BEGAN TO FLASH AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES AND WINDOWS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE CENTRAL CONTROL MODULE AND THE DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
2ND TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 T6 AAMCO IS QUOTING ME AT $4000 TO REBUILD OR $5500 TO REPLACE, WOULD BE SECOND REPLACEMENT FOR THIS VEHICLE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. THE VEHICLE STOPPED ACCELERATING AND THE SPEED DROPPED TO ZERO. THE CONTACT PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO RESTART THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED BUT WOULD NOT EXCEED BEYOND SECOND GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSIS WHERE THEY INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000.
THIS HAS TO DO WITH FAULTY HEADLIGHT SYSTEM ON THIS CAR. I HAVE HAD REPEATED FAILURES OF THE LOW BEAM ON BOTH SIDES. THE CONNECTOR THAT THE HEADLIGHT PLUGS INTO OVERHEATS TO THE POINT WHERE THE PLASTIC CONNECTOR MELTS AND NO LONGER WORKS. TO FIX IT REQUIRES THAT A NEW CONNECTOR BE PURCHASED AND SPLICED IN TO REPLACE DEFECTIVE PART. IT APPEARS THAT THE WIRE GAUGE IS TOO LOW THUS CREATING BOTH A FIRE HAZARD AS WELL AS A SAFETY HAZARD FROM HAVING HEAD LAMPS FAIL. I HAVE SPOKEN TO BOTH MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND VOLVO CORPORATE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND THEY BOTH SAY THAT THERE IS NO RECALL THUS THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO HELP FIX IT AT THEIR COST. OF COURSE, THEY ARE MORE THAN HAPPY TO HAVE ME PAY THEM A RIDICULOUS PRICE TO REPAIR IT FOR ME. THEY SEEMS TO CARE NOT THAT THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. FROM RESEARCH I HAVE DONE, IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS AND HAS BEEN A KNOWN ISSUE FOR VOLVO AND YET THEY DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. THE SERVICE PERSON I SPOKE TO TODAY AT THE NALLY VOLVO DEALERSHIP IN ATLANTA, GA ADMITTED TO ME THAT THEY HAVE ALL SORTS OF ISSUES WITH HEADLIGHTS SO THIS WAS NOT A SURPRISE TO HIM AT ALL...BUT SAID THEY WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING TO HELP FIX IT. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE NHTSA PLACE SERIOUS PRESSURE ON VOLVO TO ISSUE A RECALL TO FIX THIS SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD.
I WAS DRIVING, AND JUST AS IT STARTED TO GET DARK, I NOTICED THAT MY LIGHTS DID NOT SEEM TO BE WORKING. I STOPPED AT A PARKING LOT TO CHECK, AND THE LIGHTS WERE IN FACT NOT WORKING. IF I HAD NOT BEEN CLOSE TO HOME, IT WOULD HAVE BEEN A PERILOUS DRIVE HOME; AND, IF IT HAPPENED HALF AN HOUR LATER, I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A BUSY HIGHWAY WITH NO LIGHTS.
IN THE WINTER OF 2011 WHILE DRIVING MY CAR IN HEAVY RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC IN THE CHICAGO AREA THE TRANSMISSION FAILED SUDDENLY AND LOST ALL POWER WHICH WAS VERY DANGEROUS AND CONCERNING. I WAS BARLEY ABLE TO GET TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITHOUT POWER AND WITHOUT ENDANGERING THE OTHER VEHICLES AROUND ME. THE REPAIRS REQUIRED THAT MY TRANSMISSION BE REBUILT, DRIVE TRAIN GEARS REPLACED, AND MY RADIATOR REPLACED WHICH TOOK FOUR WEEKS AND COST $7,000. THE TRANSMISSION FAILED BECAUSE COOLANT FROM THE RADIATOR LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION FLUID. MY VEHICLE WAS MAINTAINED PER THE MANUFACTURES REQUIREMENT INCLUDING A TRANSMISSION FLUID CHANGE LESS THAN A YEAR EARLIER. IT IS OBVIOUS FROM A SIMPLE GOOGLE SEARCH THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM DUE TO DEFECTIVE PARTS AND MANUFACTURING. EVEN MORE OBVIOUS BECAUSE VOLVO WILL ONLY WARRANTY A REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION IF THE RADIATOR AND OTHER TRANSMISSION PARTS ARE REPLACED. I ALSO HAD TO REPLACE BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS EARLIER (ABOUT $400 EACH) ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THIS ALSO IS A COMMON PROBLEM SUSPECTED TO BE DUE TO OVER TIGHTENING OF STRAPS DURING SHIPMENT. CONTACTED VOLVO ON 10/31/11 AND THEY REFUSED ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH IT IS WELL DOCUMENT THAT THERE ARE MANUFACTURING DEFECTS WITH SEVERAL VEHICLES AND THIS IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. I WAS TOLD SINCE IT IS NOT A RECALL THEY WILL NOT ADDRESS IT. *TR
SIX OCCURRENCES STARTING WHEN VEHICLE (PURCHASED NEW) WAS APPROX "7 YEARS OLD AT MILEAGE 70K": WHILE DRIVING, ENGINE DIES WITHOUT WARNING. HAS BEEN CHECKED BY DEALER 3 TIMES, HAD IGNITION ASSEMBLY AND COLUMN REPLACED AFTER 2ND OR 3RD EPISODE AND PROBLEM STILL OCCURS. DEALER STATES COMPUTER CHECK DID NOT REVEAL ANY CODE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. WHEN THE ENGINE DIES, LOSE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES, HAVE TO GLIDE TO EDGE OF STREET, PUT HAZARD BLINKERS ON, ONCE HAD TO JOLT THE CAR INTO PARK TO STOP IT. CAR RESTARTS VERY SHORTLY AFTER POWER WAS LOST. SO FAR HAPPENS AT "NEIGHBORHOOD" SPEEDS <=35 MPH. *TR
CAR LOST ALL POWER. ALL DASHBOARD WENT OFF AND POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE DRIVING AT OVER 40 MILES AN HOUR ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS HAPPENED ON 4 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. MILEAGE 123,000 2004 VOLVO XC90 T6. *TR
2004 VOLVO XC90 T6 "TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT" ERROR MESSAGE APPEARS. CAR JUMPS WHEN CHANGING GEAR AND SOMETIMES HAS NO POWER WHEN PUSHING THE GAS. CAR HAS 72K+ MILES. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AFTER PULLING ONTO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIANS WERE UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE TECHNICIANS PERFORMED UPDATES TO THE COMPUTER. THE VEHICLE WAS AT THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN SINCE THE UPDATES WERE MADE. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO THE DEALER FOR FURTHER QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.
LIQUID (PROBABLY WATER) INSIDE THE FRAME OF VOLVO XC90 CAUSING ELECTRICAL ISSUES. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HAVE THE TIRES REPLACED. THE FRONT RIGHT TIRE WAS REPLACED AND AIR CAME OUT OF THE TIRE. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THERE WAS A CRACK IN THE RIM WHICH CAUSED THE TIRE TO LOSE AIR. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE RIM WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 48,000.
DURING LONG DURATIONS(>4HRS) OF DRIVING MY 2004 VOLVO XC90, IT SEEMS TO HAVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THAT HAVE CAUSED ME AND THE PASSENGERS TO BE PUT INTO DANGEROUS SITUATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, DRIVING ON A LONG TRIP WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENABLED AND TRYING TO ACCELERATE UP A HILL AND SUDDENLY THE CAR WILL GO INTO AN ENGINE PROTECTION MODE AND REDUCE POWER TO THE EXTENT THAT I CAN'T ACCELERATE AND HAVE TO PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD--(BOOST CONTROL MODULE HAS BEEN REPLACED AND THE ENGINE CONTROL MODULE HAS BEEN REPLACED.) AS LONG AS I DON'T USE THE CRUISE CONTROL THIS WILL NOT OCCUR. ALSO, THERE WAS A SOFTWARE UPDATE IN 2009. NEXT, AFTER TRYING TO ACCELERATE UP A HILL, THERE SEEMS TO BE INTERMITTENT REDUCTION IN ENGINE POWER, NOT ALLOWING THE CAR TO ACCELERATE. AFTER TRYING TO ACCELERATE THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS APPEARED AND WILL NOT GO OFF (WAITING TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM DIAGNOSED)... *TR
2004 VOLVO XC 90 T6 TRANSMISSION. PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW FROM DEALER. @ 35,000 THE TRANSMISSION FAILED. PRIOR TO THE FAILURE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP AND THE VEHICLE WAS NON RESPONSIVE. DUE TO THE DELAY OF THE TRANSMISSION CATCHING AND PROPELLING THE VEHICLE FORWARD WE WERE IN A NEAR COLLISION WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. UNIT WAS REPLACED WITH A REFURBISHED ONE FROM THE DEALER. @ 85,000 THE VEHICLE BEGAN TO SHOW SYMPTOMS OF TRANSMISSION FAILURE AGAIN. THIS TIME IT WAS CORRECTED WITH A SOFTWARE UPDATE. NOW VEHICLE HAS 125,000 MILES AND TRANSMISSION FAILURE AGAIN. VEHICLE SHOWED NO SIGNS OF TRANSMISSION WEAR AND TEAR. JUST ALL OF THE SUDDEN VEHICLE CAME NON RESPONSIVE TO DRIVERS GAS INPUTS. THIS COULD BE A HUGE HAZARD IN HIGH TRAFFIC CONDITIONS AND POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN SERIOUS INJURIES AND EVEN DEATH. VOLVO REFUSES TO RECALL THIS UNITS. THEY ONLY OFFERED TO COVER 50% OF THE COST TO REPAIR. VOLVO KNOWS THAT THESE VEHICLES ARE PRONE TO PREMATURE TRANSMISSION FAILURE AND SHOULD RECALL AND REPLACE THIS UNITS AT NO COST TO THE CONSUMER. MY HUSBAND HAD A 55MPH CRASH IN MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 ON THE FREEWAY. HE REAR ENDED ANOTHER DRIVER AT TOP SPEED, WAS SPUN AROUND SEVERAL TIMES ON THE FREEWAY AND ENDED UP FACING TRAFFIC. THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED, BUT THE DRIVER'S SIDE DID NOT. THE INSPECTOR FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY SAID THERE WAS NOT REASON THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY AT THAT SPEED, OTHER THAN A DEFECT, AS FAR AS HE WAS CONCERNED. I CONTACTED VOLVO AND WAS BASICALLY GIVEN THE RUN AROUND ABOUT HOW THE AIRBAG SHOULD NOT HAVE DEPLOYED AND THAT THIS WAS PERFECTLY OKAY. I WOULD LIKE AN INVESTIGATION ESPECIALLY SINCE MY CEM SYSTEM WAS NOT OPERATING PROPERLY PRIOR TO THE ACCIDENT. I HAD AIRBAG WARNING, BRAKE FAILURE, ETC., AND THE DEALER TOLD ME A YEAR AGO THE CEM SYSTEM WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED AT $1300, WHICH I WAS NOT WILLING TO PAY. *TR
TRANSMISSION FAILURE REQUIRING COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF TRANSMISSION (NO REBUILD), RADIATOR AND TRANSMISSION COOLER. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 VOLVO XC90. AT APPROXIMATELY 52K MILES, THE XC90 1ST GENERATION TRANSMISSION WENT BAD AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. CARLSEN VOLVO (PALO ALTO, CA) AGREED TO COVER THE COST OF THE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT. I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE SERVICE AND WENT ON MY WAY. IN DECEMBER 2010 AT ~107,000K MILES, THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO HESITATE & FUNCTION ERRATICALLY WHILE DRIVING. WITHIN AFEW DAYS, THE CAR WAS PARKED AT MY HOME, AND WAS UNABLE TO ENGAGE IN FORWARD OR REVERSE. I TOWED THE CAR IN; IT WAS DIAGNOSED W/ INTERNAL TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. THE SERVICE REP SAID THAT SHE WOULD TALK TO THE FACTORY REP REGARDING COMPENSATION. THE DEALER REP CALLED VOLVO N.A. REP, WYATT, WHO OFFERED TO PAY FOR THE PARTS (~$3,500) BUT I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THE LABOR(~$1,500). MY HUSBAND COUNTERED THAT WE WOULD LIKE THE WHOLE THING PAID FOR SINCE IT WAS WELL KNOWN FACTORY DEFECT. WHEN WYATT HEARD OF OUR COUNTER OFFER, HE NOT ONLY DENIED THIS, BUT SIMPLY STATED THAT THE DEAL WAS OFF THE TABLE, PERIOD. THE NEXT DAY, I RECONSIDERED AND ASKED THE SERVICE REP TO CALL WYATT AGAIN WITH OUR ACCEPTANCE OF THE INITIAL DEAL. WYATT REFUSED TO PUT THE DEAL BACK ON THE TABLE AND SAID WE SHOULD PAY FOR THE REPAIRS OURSELVES. THEN CALLED VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE WHO DOCUMENTED THE COMPLETE STORY,CONTACTED WYATT VIA EMAIL TO AGAIN. HOWEVER, WYATT REFUSED. APPARENTLY BECAUSE I HAVE CHOSEN IN THE PAST TO HAVE A PERSONAL MECHANIC SERVICE MY CAR, CHANGE THE OIL AND TIRES, ETC. I AM CONSIDERED TO BE A "DISLOYAL VOLVO CUSTOMER" AND THIS WAS A CONSIDERATION IN WYATT'S DECISION NOT TO PAY FOR MY TRANSMISSION, EVEN THOUGH IT IS A DEFECTIVE PART. AT THIS POINT, I HAD TO HAVE MY CAR BACK, AND TOLD CARLSEN TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION. CARLSEN OFFERED A 10% DISCOUNT OFF THE TOTAL PRICE. A VERY KIND GESTURE, HOWEVER, I HAD TO PAY $4,600 OUT OF POCKET FOR ANOTHER NEW TRANSMISSION FOR THIS CAR. IT'S WELL DOCUMENTED THAT THE 1ST AND 2ND GENERATION TRANSMISSIONS FOR THIS MODEL HAVE BEEN DEFECTIVE. I AM DISGUSTED. *LN
AT 65MPH ON A HIGHWAY, THE VEHICLE REGISTERED A "ANTI-SKID SERVICE REQUIRED" FAULT MESSAGE, THEN AN "ELECTRICAL SERVICE REQUIRED" MESSAGE. THE ENGINE THEN QUIT RUNNING, THE STEERING BECAME UNRESPONSIVE AND THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY STARTED DECELERATING. THE BRAKING WAS VERY MUSHY AND THE CAR WAS DIFFICULT TO PULL OVER AND STOP. THE CAR WOULD NOT START. ALL THE LIGHTS AND THE BATTERY SEEM TO BE WORKING FINE. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE CEM (ENGINE CONTROL MODULE) WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDS REPLACEMENT.
MY VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR A FUEL PUMP ISSUE BY THE NHTSA. IN A LETTER DATED 9/13/2010, VOLVO CARS OF NORTH AMERICA OUTLINED THE REASON FOR THE RECALL AND SPECIFICALLY ADVISED: PLEASE SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT AT YOUR LOCAL AUTHORIZED VOLVO RETAILER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO HAVE THIS IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL PERFORMED AT NO CHARGE. I CONTACTED MY VOLVO RETAILER AND WAS SPECIFICALLY ADVISED TO BRING MY CAR IN WITH AS LITTLE FUEL AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE THE TECHNICIANS WOULD HAVE TO DRAIN THE TANKS TO CONDUCT THE REPAIR. I FOLLOWED THIS ORDER TO THE LETTER AND DROPPED MY VEHICLE OFF FOR THE "NO CHARGE" RECALL REPAIR. AT DROP OFF, I HAD ALSO SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CONTACT ME WITH AN ESTIMATE FOR A REPAIR TO THE THIRD ROW SEAT AND RIGHT TURN SIGNAL BEFORE CORRECTING. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT DID CALL WITH THE ESTIMATE FOR THE SEAT REPAIR AND I AGREED TO THE $100 CHARGE. IN THE AFTERNOON WHEN MY HUSBAND PICKED UP MY VOLVO, I HAD BEEN CHARGED $53.72 FOR FUEL THAT I NEVER AUTHORIZED. WHEN I CALLED TO COMPLAIN, I WAS TOLD THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE FUELED IN ORDER TO CHECK THE REPAIR. IF THAT WAS THE CASE, THEN WHY WAS I TOLD TO BRING IT IN EMPTY AND NEVER TOLD THAT VOLVO WOULD TAKE THE LIBERTY TO FILL IT UP WITHOUT MY APPROVAL? $54 DOLLARS IS NOT THE ISSUE--THE ISSUE IS THAT VOLVO WANTED TO MAKE AN EASY REPAIR WITH A CAR THEY DID NOT HAVE TO DRAIN GAS FROM THE TANK AND STORE. I COULD HAVE BROUGHT MY CAR IN WITH A FULL TANK AND IT WAS VOLVO'S RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR MY CAR "AT NO CHARGE". INSTEAD, VOLVO SHIFTED THEIR BURDEN TO ME AND THEN MADE ME PAY TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR THEIR REPAIR TECHNICIANS. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE OWNER'S MANUAL PROVIDED INACCURATE INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THE TOWING CAPACITY; HOWEVER, THE 2005 AND 2006 OWNER'S MANUAL SPECIFIED THE ACCURATE WEIGHT REDUCTION WITH THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS. IN ADDITION, THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM BECAME INOPERATIVE INTERMITTENTLY. THE RELAY SWITCH, INTERNAL REM AND YAW MODULES WERE REPLACED AT DIFFERENT TIMES. WHILE DRIVING THE ENGINE WOULD COMPLETELY SHUT OFF WHEN THE CONTACTS KNEE WAS CLOSE TO THE IGNITION KEY. THE FAILURE CONTINUED AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. CURRENTLY, DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WAS BEING PERFORMED BY THE DEALER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 10,000.

WHILE DRIVING OUR VOLVO XC-90, THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN (DASHBOARD DISPLAY, LIGHTING, AC, POWER WINDOWS, POWER DOOR LOCKS, EVERYTHING ELECTRICAL ETC.). ADDITIONALLY, FOR A SPLIT SECOND THE ENGINE/TRANSMISSION JERKS AND/OR STALLS BEFORE RESUMING. THE FIRST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS IN 2010 AND NEVER OCCURRED AGAIN FOR SEVERAL YEARS. THEN SUDDENLY ON A RECENT TRIP IN AUGUST 2014 THIS HAPPENED REPEATEDLY AND THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM NEVER RETURNED TO OPERATION DURING THAT TRIP. IN THAT AUGUST 2014 OCCURRENCE WE WERE TRAVELING DOWN NARROW STATE HIGHWAY 1 IN BIG SUR, CALIFORNIA. HAD WE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE DURING THE JERKING EPISODES WE COULD HAVE GONE OFF THE NARROW ROAD AND DOWN THE STEEP CLIFF SIDE TO OUR DEATHS. THIS PUT OUR FAMILY IN A VERY PERILOUS SITUATION. ADDITIONALLY, SINCE THE ABOVE INCIDENT IN LATE AUGUST 2014 THE VEHICLE HAS EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS OTHER FLASHES/JERKING INCIDENTS WHILE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THIS OCCURRENCE SEEMS TO BE INCREASING. BRAKES ON THE VEHICLE FAIL INTERMITTENTLY, ESPECIALLY AT LOW SPEEDS (LIKE BACKING OUT OF A PARKING SPOT. WHEN THE PEDAL IS PUSHED IT FEELS LIKE A ROCK, WITH LITTLE DEPRESSION, AND VEHICLE DOES NOT SLOW. IF PRESSURE IS RELEASED AND PEDAL IS PUSHED A SECOND TIME, USUALLY THE BRAKING WILL FINALLY WORK. A REPAIR SHOP REPLICATED THIS WHEN PULLING THE VEHICLE OUT OF A BAY TO TEST DRIVE AND THEY LOST BRAKING AND NEARLY HIT A WALL. BREAKING AT HIGH SPEEDS (60MPH+) OFTEN RESULTS IN A STRONG PULL TO THE LEFT, AS IF THE LEFT BRAKE IS BRAKING MORE THAN THE RIGHT SIDE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT NIGHT, ALL ELECTRICAL INDICATORS ON DASHBOARD INCLUDING THE TURN SIGNALS STOP WORKING THEN THE VEHICLE STARTED SLOWING DOWN. AFTER STOPPING I WAS UNABLE TO OPEN GAS TANK AND TAILGATE WHERE THE BATTERY IS LOCATED. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE VOLVO DEALER AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE INCIDENT. NOW THIS HAS HAPPEN 7 MORE TIMES. I AM A SINGLE PARENT WITH MINOR CHILDREN IN MY VEHICLE. PLEASE ASSIST. SOMEONE INFORM ME THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE WITH THE CENTRAL ELECTRICAL MODULE. PURCHASE PRICE WAS ~$55K AND WITH ONLY 106K MILES I SHOULD NOT NOW HAVE TO SPEND ~$5K FOR A NEW TRANNY. *TR
SWIVEL AND SPRING ON REMOTE CONTROL STOP WORKING. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM FOR US, BEGINNING LESS THAN 1 YEAR AFTER WE PURCHASED CAR NEW. A RUBBING NOISE BEGAN IN LATE SEPTEMBER. I HAD AN INSPECTION AND DIAGNOSTIC AT THE DEALERSHIP ON SEPTEMBER 23RD. THEY TOLD ME THE FRONT BEARINGS AND THE LOWER ENGINE MOUNT PAD SHOULD BE REPLACED. THE NEXT DAY, WHILE I WAS DRIVING, THE TRANSMISSION SEIZED. THE CAR WAS TOWED AND THE DEALERSHIP SAID THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION AND ENTIRE COOLANT SYSTEM. THEIR DIAGNOSTIC SPECIALIST WAS UNABLE TO DETECT SUCH A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE THE DAY BEFORE IT HAPPENED. WHO KNOWS WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY. VOLVO ACKNOWLEDGED THE PROBLEM BUT ONLY PAID FOR HALF OF THE PARTS AND LABOR. I STILL HAD TO COME OUT OF POCKET $3000+.
WHILE DRIVING IN RAIN ABOUT TWO OURS LEFT HEADLIGHT WENT OUT TWICE BUT CAME BACK ON, ALMOST FLICKERING MOTION. NOTICED THAT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM INSIDE CAR FLICKERED AS WELL. HEAD LIGHT WENT OUT AGAIN FOR THIRD TIME AND SO I PULLED OVER AND TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON AND WAS FINE. CONTINUED DRIVING FOR ANOTHER 30 MINS WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM WENT OUT DURING DRIVING. TOTAL BLACKNESS. THE ONLY THING I COULD DO WAS STEER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND STOP. TURNED THE CAR OFF AGAIN AND BACK ON AND WORKED FINE BUT HAD "SRS" AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY, MY WIPERS CAME ON FOR ONE CYCLE. A FEW MINUTES LATER THE SAME THING. THEN A FEW MINUTES AFTER THAT THE WIPERS CAME ON, STAYED ON, AND MY ENTIRE ELECTRIC PANEL SHUT DOWN. IN 2010 RIGHT-SIDE HEADLIGHT STOPPED WORKING. CUSTOMER REPLACED BULB PER DASH WARNING LIGHT BUT DID NOT CORRECT PROBLEM. CUSTOMER INSPECTION OF BULB CONTACTS AND BULB HOLDER SHOWED EVIDENCE OF HIGH HEAT DUE TO MELTING OF METAL AND PLASTIC. ON 07/16/10 VOLVO DEALER REPLACED HEADLIGHT BALLAST, CONTROL MODULE, CONTACT UNIT AND BULB. RIGHT HEADLIGHT PROBLEM CORRECTED AT COST OF $435.09 - BALLAST & CONTROL MODULE; $108.90 - CONTACT UNIT; AND $162.00 - BULB, PLUS LABOR. CURRENT PROBLEM IS LEFT-SIDE HEADLIGHT NOT WORKING AND APPEARS TO BE A REPEAT OF PREVIOUS RIGHT-SIDE PROBLEM. *TR
THE VEHICLE IS INTERMITTENTLY SHUTTING OFF WHILE DRIVING ON THE PRIVATE ROADS OR FREEWAY, ALL ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT (DASHBOARD, GAUGES, STEREO, SOME WINDOWS, DRIVING TRANNY CHANGER - CAN'T SHIFT), AND ALL OTHER ITEMS ARE GOING OUT. THE POWER OF THE VEHICLE WILL STALL FOR 1/2 SECOND IN AS MANY AS 3-5 TIMES DURING AN EPISODE. ULTIMATELY RESULTING IN ALL ELECTRICAL POWER FAILING. THIS APPEARS TO ALSO BE CAUSING THE BATTER TO NOT BE CHARGED. THE BATTERY IS NEW, PURCHASED A FEW DAYS AGO TO SEE IF THIS WOULD RESOLVE THE ISSUE, WHICH IT DIDN'T. WINDSHIELD WIPERS HAD POWER AND WERE MOVING WHILE ON THE AUTOMATIC SETTING, WITHOUT ANY RAIN TO AUTOMATE THEM. AN ABS ERROR LIGHT CAME ON BUT WE WERE ABLE TO USE THE BRAKE AND GAS PEDAL. WE WERE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH ON A HIGHWAY AND WERE LUCKILY ABLE TO EXIT WITHOUT HAVING THE USE OF BLINKERS OR BRAKE LIGHTS. WHEN WE TURNED THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON, WE RESUMED POWER, BUT HAD AN SRS WARNING LIGHT APPEAR. AFTER DOING RESEARCH ON VOLVO-FORUMS.COM AND ABOUTAUTOMOBILE.COM, WE HAVE DISCOVERED THIS TO BE AN ISSUE MANY (50+) 2004 XC90 DRIVERS HAVE EXPERIENCED. WE FEEL VERY LUCKY THAT THIS HAPPENED DURING THE DAY, BECAUSE THE SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH MORE DANGEROUS ON A 4-LANE HIGHWAY IN THE DARK. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE WITHIN FIVE MINUTES AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING THE RESULTS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 115,000.

MY WIFE WAS DRIVING OUR 2004 VOLVO XC90 BACK FROM VACATION WITH OUR TWO CHILDREN IN THE VEHICLE AND ALL THE DASH INSTRUMENTATION LOST POWER AND THE STEERING BECAME HEAVY. THIS WAS DURING THE DAY SO I DO NOT KNOW IF THE HEAD LIGHTS WENT OUT AS WELL. THE CAR DID NOT STOP AND THE POWER CAME BACK ON. THIS OCCUR A SECOND TIME DURING THIS TRIP WHICH WAS ABOUT 3 & 1/2 HOURS IN DURATION. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING AT 35 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN DRAGGING AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THE DEALER PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC AND FOUND THAT THE TRANSMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE DEALER ADVISED THERE WAS A SMALL LEAK FROM THE POWER STEERING PUMP. THERE WERE NO REPAIRS. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 39,000.
