REAR TAILGATE RELEASE FAILURE. *TR
APPOINTMENT SET WITH VOLVO DEALER ON 07/26/2010 FOR FUEL PUMP RECALL. AFTER THE SERVICE I EXPERIENCED EVEN MORE STRONGER GASOLINE ODOR WHILE DRIVING. FELT NAUSEA I HAD TO HAVE ALL WINDOWS DOWN. CALLED THE DEALER'S SERVICE DEPARTMENT IN THE SAME DAY AFTERNOON, I WAS TOLD THAT THE ODOR SHOULD DISSIPATE WITHIN 2 WEEKS. IS IT NORMAL? HOW CAN I VERIFY? *TR
ON OUR 2004 VOLVO XC90 THE HEADLIGHTS SUDDENLY WENT DARK, NO LOW OR HIGH BEAMS AT ALL. I AM NOW BEING TOLD IT IS A MODULE AND THE REPAIR COST IS IN EXCESS OF $1200. THE CAR HAS HID HEADLIGHTS. THIS OUTAGE CREATED A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE IN THAT WE WERE DRIVING UP HIGHWAY 395 AT NIGHT WHEN THE COMPLETE FAILURE OF THE HEADLIGHTS OCCURRED. IN RESEARCHING THE ISSUE ON THE INTERNET IT APPEARS IT IS A RELATIVELY COMMON FAILURE. *TR
AFTER DRIVING 125 MILES WITHOUT INCIDENT, WE LEFT OUR 2004 VOLVO XC 90 T6 AWD PARKED FOR 4 HOURS BEFORE DRIVING AGAIN. AFTER LESS THAN A HALF MILE AT LOW SPEED, THERE WAS A "THUMP" FROM THE FRONT OF THE CAR, THE WIPERS CYCLED, THE GAUGES ALL WENT BLANK, SOME OF THE WINDOWS STOPPED WORKING, THE A/C WENT OUT (BLOWER STAYED ON). THE CAR STAYED ON, BUT SEEMED "STUCK" IN SECOND GEAR AND THE BRAKES BECAME "SPONGY," BUT OPERABLE. TURN SIGNALS WERE INOPERABLE AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT. THE INDICATOR LIGHT ON THE GEAR SHIFT WENT OUT AND THE CENTRAL LOCKING SYSTEM STOPPED FUNCTIONING. WE GOT OUT OF TRAFFIC AND INTO THE SHADE. I CHECKED ALL FUSES AND TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR. IT WOULD RESTART, BUT WITHIN SECONDS THERE WERE MULTIPLE "CLICKS" COMING FROM THE AREA NEAR THE FUSE BOX IN THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT FOLLOWED BY THE ELECTRICAL FAILURES DESCRIBED ABOVE. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS WE MOVED IT TO A SECURE LOCATION TWO MILES AWAY. DURING THAT DRIVE ALL OF THE ABOVE PROBLEMS HAPPENED AGAIN, INCLUDING THE ENGINE BEING "STUCK" IN SECOND GEAR. AFTER LETTING THE CAR SIT OVERNIGHT, IT STARTED AND RAN WITHOUT INCIDENT. HOWEVER, THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT AND THE "SRS" LIGHT HAVE REMAINED ON. A REPAIR SHOP COULD NOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, THE SAME THINGS HAPPENED TO MY WIFE IN THE SAME CAR. THE SYMPTOMS LASTED A FEW SECONDS AND DISAPPEARED. *TR
2004 VOLVO XC90 TRANSMISSION FAILURE - THE TRANSMISSION FAILED IN MY VOLVO AT 106,000 MILES. THIS IS THE 3RD TRANSMISSION THAT HAS BEEN INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. THE COST TO ME WAS $3000.00. *TR
2004 VOLVO XC90 2.5T AWD. INTERMITTENT "THUMPING" AT HIGH SPEEDS CAUSING THE CAR TO JOLT/LURCH SLIGHTLY. THIS HAS HAPPENED ON AND OFF FOR 2 MONTHS NORMALLY AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. YESTERDAY I WAS ON A 4 HOUR HIGHWAY DRIVE HOME FROM VACATION AND THE THUMPING/JOLTING HAPPENED ABOUT 5 TIMES. ULTIMATELY MY CAR LOST COMPLETE ELECTRICAL POWER AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO COAST OFF THE HIGHWAY UNSCATHED BUT OTHERS MAY NOT BE AS FORTUNATE. INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS ISSUE. *TR
I HAVE BEEN HAVING AN ISSUE WITH MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 WHICH THE DEALERSHIP HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO CORRECT FOR MY FOURTH VISIT NOW. THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING AND EACH TIME I TAKE IT IN, THEY ARE UNABLE TO REPLICATE THE ISSUE AND OF COURSE FIND SOMETHING ELSE TO REPAIR. I HAVE BEEN LUCKY AS NOT HAVE BEEN IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WHEN IT HAPPENS, BUT I COULD IMAGINE IT COULD CAUSE A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT. THE LAST TIME THIS HAPPENED WAS ABOUT 7/18. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 70MPH ON THE FREEWAY AND THE CAR MADE A 'THUMP' AND ALL THE LIGHTS AND GAUGES TURNED OFF MOMENTARILY AND STARTED BACK UP AGAIN. I SLOWED DOWN TO ABOUT 60MPH AND MOVED TO THE RIGHT SIDE AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN ABOUT 5 MIN LATER. LUCKILY I WAS CLOSE TO THE EXIT WHERE MY MECHANIC SHOP WAS SO I SLOWED DOWN TO EXIT. ALL OF THE LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL TURNED OFF, AS WELL AS THE AIRCONDITIONING (115 DAY IN PHX) AND A WARNING LIGHT FLASHED SAYING I HAD A BREAK FAILURE. I WAS ABLE TO LIMP TO THE MECHANICS AND LEFT THE CAR RUNNING SO THEY COULD SEE THE ENGINE WAS ON, BUT NOTHING ELSE. THEY DID NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT TO CHECK THE 'CODE' ON A VOLVO. THEY WERE ABLE TO RE-SET IT BY DISCONNECTING THE BATTERY, AND THE LIGHTS WORKED AGAIN. AS I PULLED OUT OF THE MECHANICS, THE CAR THUMPED AGAIN AND I ONCE AGAIN LOST ALL POWER. I LIMPED THE CAR HOME WITH PLANS TO DRIVE IT EARLY IN THE MORNING BEFORE IT GOT TOO HOT, TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP. IN THE MORNING, THE CAR WOULD NOT START AT ALL. I CALLED A TOW TRUCK AND HAD IT BROUGHT OVER. THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP ONCE AGAIN COULD FIND NOTHING WRONG, BUT FOUND SOMETHING TO FIX AND CHARGE ME FOR, THE IMPULSE SENSOR ($250). I FINALLY GOT THE CAR BACK ON JULY 29TH, 10 DAYS LATER. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCED BY MANY 04/05 XC90 OWNERS AS DESCRIBED IN THIS FORUM,HTTP://WWW.VOLVO-FORUMS.COM/T23397-XC90-ELECTRICALENGINE-POWER-FAILURE.HTM. AT ABOUT 60,000 MILES WHILE THE VEHICLE, A 2004 VOLVO XC 90 T6 WAS IN OPERATION AT 55 MPH THE POWER TO THE DASH AND ALL ACCESSORIES WENT DEAD. THE HORN, THE BLINKERS, THE SPEEDOMETER (RADIO, POWER WINDOWS ETC.) ALL FAILED TO WORK EVEN AS THE CAR WAS IN OPERATION AND WAS BEING DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY. LATER UPON RESTART THERE WAS AN ERROR CODE IN THE DASH, IN THE ICM I BELIEVE THEY CALL IT (INFOTAINMENT CONTROL MODULE), SAYING URGENT SRS (SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT SYSTEM- AKA SIDE AIRBAGS) SERVICE URGENT ?OR SOMETHING TO THAT EFFECT. THE DEALER USED THEIR PROPRIETARY READER TO DECIPHER THE ERROR CODES AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THE DIM, OR DRIVER INFORMATION MODULE FOR THE SRS SYSTEM HAD GONE BAD, IT HAD A SHORT. THEY SAID IF WE DID NOT REPLACE IT THEY SAID THAT THE SHORT COULD OVERRIDE COMMUNICATION OF THE OTHER MODULES AND ELECTRONICS ON THAT SAME CIRCUIT AND WE MIGHT LOSE OTHER CONTROLS INCLUDING POSSIBLY AN UNEXPECTED ENGINE SHUTDOWN OR OTHER OPERATIONAL ABILITIES. $ 1532.00 LATER, AND LESS THAN TWO DAYS AFTER WE HAD THE SUV REPAIRED, WE HAD A REPEAT OF THE COMPLETE DASH POWER FAILURE. THIS TIME WE WERE TOO WORRIED TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND INSTEAD DROVE DIRECTLY TO THE DEALER WITHOUT A SPEEDOMETER, HORN, GAS GAUGE OR TURN SIGNALS. WE CHECKED AND THE WIPERS REMAINED OPERATIONAL. UPON RESTART AT THE DEALERSHIP THE SAME ERROR MESSAGE APPEARS- SRS SERVICE URGENT. BUT THIS TIME THE DEALER READS THE DIAGNOSTIC ERROR CODES AND TELLS US THAT IT IS LIKELY A CEM, OR CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE- (ABOUT $1200.00 + TAX) BUT THEY ADD IT MIGHT BE THE DEM OR DIFFERENTIAL ELECTRONIC MODULE. IT SEEMS LUDICROUS THAT NECESSARY ELECTRONIC CONTROLS WOULD NOT HAVE PROTECTION FROM CROSS FAILURES, AND THAT A BAD DIM OR CEM WOULD PLACE THE OPERATORS AND PASSENGERS AT RISK BY KNOCKING OUT OTHER CONTROLS. OF COURSE I AM WONDERING HOW TO DETERMINE IF THE DEALER IS RIGHT THIS TIME AND EVEN MORE CONCERNED ABOUT EXPERIENCING ANOTHER BLACKOUT. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, EVERY ELECTRICAL COMPONENT MALFUNCTIONED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE STEREO SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED; THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. TWO DAYS AFTER THE REPAIR, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM MALFUNCTIONED AGAIN. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 132,000.
ALL DASHLIGHTS WENT COMPLETELY BLACK, AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT WITH IT WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY (AT NIGHT). THIS HAPPENED ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. VOLVO DEALER CLAIMED THEY "RESET" IT THE FIRST TWO FIXES AND THEN THE THIRD TIME REPLACED THE CEM, WHICH WAS A COUPLE THOUSAND DOLLAR FIX FOR ME. *LN
TRAVELING ON HIGHWAY 231 NORTH JUST SOUTH OF MONTGOMERY. CAME TO A STOP AT TRAFFIC LIGHT, PROCEEDED THROUGH LIGHT BUT CAR WOULD NOT SHIFT. IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, CAR WAS SLUGGISH AND STUCK IN THIRD GEAR. ALMOST RAN INTO BY TRACTOR-TRAILER BECAUSE WE COULD NOT GET OUT OF THE WAY. *TR
WE JUST PURCHASED A 2004 VOLVO XC90 T6 ON JUNE 2, 2010 FROM A PRIVATE SELLER WHO ORIGINALLY PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND HAVE IT MAINTAINED FULLY AT RICKENBAUGH VOLVO IN DENVER. WE ARE FIRST TIME OWNERS OF A VOLVO VEHICLE. THE CAR CURRENTLY HAS 76,783 MILES ON IT. AFTER JUST OWNING THE VEHICLE FOR 4 WEEKS AND ADDING JUST 400 MILES ON THE VEHICLE, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON AND WHILE DRIVING TO THE RICKENBAUGH VOLVO SERVICE STATION, A MESSAGE CAME UP WITH 'URGENT TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED'. WE WERE TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THE CAR NEEDS NEW TRANSMISSION WITH RADIATOR, OIL COOLER AND OIL COOLER LINES IN THE AMOUNT OF $7,800.00. MY WIFE AND I WERE SHOCKED AND DECIDED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE HOME BECAUSE WE CANNOT AFFORD THIS EXPENSE AFTER JUST SAVING MONEY FOR A YEAR TO PURCHASE THE VEHICLE 4 WEEKS AGO. THE VEHICLE WAS FULLY SERVICED AT RICKENBAUGH AND A 75,000 MILE SERVICE WAS DONE ON MAY, 2010. WE WENT AND SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR PROBLEMS WITH 2004 VOLVO XC90 AND FOUND THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF REPORTS OF TRANSMISSION ISSUES/PROBLEMS. PLEASE CALL ME AT [XXX] . WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS (TYPICALLY ON LONG TRIPS OF 4HRS OR MORE) I HEAR A LOUD THUMPING NOISE THAT IS VERY UNNERVING. IT FEELS LIKE THE PISTON HAS LEFT ITS BEARINGS AND IS RAMMING INTO THE CAR. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A SHARP JERK THEN A MOMENTARY LOSS OF ENGINE POWER. AT THIS POINT THE DASHBOARD GOES BLANK, THE HEADLIGHTS FLICKER AND THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS TURN ON. THIS TURN OF EVENTS GETS SO SCARY THAT I PULL OFF THE ROAD AND WAIT FOR A FEW MINUTES. I AM THEN ABLE TO TURN THE CAR ON AND KEEP DRIVING. BUT ONCE THE ISSUE HAS OCCURRED IT KEEPS OCCURRING MORE AND MORE FREQUENTLY IF I KEEP DRIVING, ABOUT EVERY 10 TO 15 MINUTES. HOWEVER IF I LET THE CAR REST FOR A FEW HOURS OR OVERNIGHT I AM ABLE TO DRIVE THE CAR FINE. AS A TREND THIS PROBLEM IS WORSENING. WHEN I FIRST EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM IN THE SUMMER OF 2010 IT ONLY OCCURRED ONCE. I WAS ABLE TO RESUME MY LONG ROAD TRIP WITH NO OTHER INCIDENT. THE NEXT TIME IT OCCURRED WAS ON THE SAW MILL RIVER PARKWAY, A WINDING ROAD FROM NY CITY TO CT. IT OCCURRED AT NIGHT AND WAS FAR MORE SCARY THAN BEFORE. AGAIN I WAS ABLE TO RESUME MY TRIP BUT THIS TIME THE PROBLEM OCCURRED TWICE BEFORE I REACHED HOME. THE THIRD TIME IT HAPPENED WAS ON THE LAST LEG OF A LONG ROAD TRIP FROM CT TO FLORIDA. SAME SYMPTOMS BUT WITH MORE FREQUENCY. ON ALL THE OCCASIONS I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY FAMILY THAT INCLUDED TWO SMALL KIDS AND ON ONE OCCASION TWO ELDERLY PEOPLE TOO. NOT ONLY HAS THIS COST ME A LOT OF MONEY BY WAY OF EMERGENCY CAR RENTALS AND OVERNIGHT STAYS (ON THE 3RD FAILURE) BUT IT HAS ALSO PUT ME AND FAMILY AT RISK OF SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. I HAVE HAD MY CAR EXAMINED BY 3 DIFFERENT VOLVO DEALERSHIPS IN 3 DIFFERENT STATES AND NONE OF THEM COULD FIGURE OUT THE ROOT CAUSE. I NOTICE THAT MANY 2004/2005 VOLVO XC90S HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND AM SURPRISED THAT YOU HAVE NOT ISSUED A SAFETY RECALL. *TR
2004 VOLVO XC90 T6 TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. LOST POWER DIFFICULT TO DRIVE CAR TO SAFE PARKING SPACE. *TR
VEHICLE HAS ALREADY HAD THE TRANSMISSION REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE BY PREVIOUS OWNER. IT WENT OUT AGAIN ON US AT ABOUT 70,000 MILES. HAD TRANSMISSION REPLACED WITH "NEW HIGH CLASS VOLVO PARTS" TRANSMISSION. NOW THE ENGINE IS 3 TIMES LOUDER THAN BEFORE AND WE'RE IN SOME SERIOUS MONEY FOR OUR CAR. WE'RE VERY DISAPPOINTED. *TR
2004 VOLVO XC 90 AND TRANSMISSION IS FAILING, AS WELL AS MOTOR MOUNTS, WHEEL BEARING BOOTS, ETC. DEALER KNOWS ABOUT THESE RECURRING ISSUES WITH OTHERS OF SAME YEAR, BUT CLAIMS IT IS ONLY MY ISSUE. PURCHASE PRICE WAS ~$55K AND WITH ONLY 90K MILES I SHOULD NOT NOW HAVE TO SPEND ~$5K FOR A NEW TRANNY. RIP-OFF *TR
PURCHASED A 2005 VOLVO SC90. ONE OWNER BEEN TO VOLVO DEALER EVERY TIME IT HAS BEEN SERVICED. SEEMED LIKE A GOOD DEAL. THIS IS A WEEKEND VEHICLE. AND WELL THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AT 112000 MILES. ONLY 4500 TO FIX. I REALLY THOUGHT VOLVO WAS A RELIABLE VEHICLE. WHAT A JOKE SOMETHING IS REALLY WRONG WITH THIS. *TR
PURCHASED AN '04 VOLVO XC90 T6 ON MAY 1ST FROM A PRIVATE SELLER. DID RESEARCH ON THE VEHICLE THROUGH MSN RELIABILITY, VOLVO, ETC. ONLY ISSUE HIGHLIGHTED WAS ENGINE CONCERNS, NOT TRANSMISSION. IT WASN'T UNTIL THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT ON JUNE 6TH THAT I FOUND NUMEROUS CONSUMER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION GOING OUT AT AROUND 60K MILES. MINE WENT OUT AT APPROX. 57K MILES. I'VE CONTACTED VOLVO AND ASKED ABOUT RECALLS, ETC. AND WAS TOLD I SHOULD'VE DRIVEN MY CAR, OR HAD IT TOWED 40+ MILES TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE IT DIAGNOSED TO THEN HAVE IT REPAIRED AT THE DEALERSHIP SO THAT I MIGHT GET A REIMBURSED. ABOUT TWO WEEKS PRIOR TO THE "TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT" MESSAGE ON THE DASH I RECEIVED A "COOLANT LOW STOP ENGINE." I'VE TAKEN MY VOLVO TO A CERTIFIED VOLVO REPAIR SERVICE WHERE THE COST IS GOING TO BE $5,335. THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT AFTER GETTING OFF THE INTERSTATE AND COMING TO A STOP AT A RED LIGHT. WHEN I TRIED TO ACCELERATE THE CAR JUST WOUND. *TR
IN MARCH 2010, 04 XC90 LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65MPH. DASHBOARD LIGHTS, RADIO ALL CUT OFF, CAR LUNGED FORWARD, AND IN 1-2 SECONDS DASHBOARD LIGHTS AND RADIO POWER ON AGAIN. TOOK TO VOLVO DEALERSHIP, THEY COULDN'T DUPLICATE THE ISSUE BUT DIAGNOSTICS SAID THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE THE STEERING COLUMN MODULE WHICH SHOULD FIX PROBLEM. THIS DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE CAR DID THE SAME THING (LOSE POWER, LUNGE FORWARD) AROUND SAME SPEED 2 MONTHS LATER. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE, RETURNED CAR TO ME. A WEEK LATER, JUNE 3, CAR WON'T START AT ALL, TOWED TO VOLVO DEALERSHIP. THIS TIME THEY SAY THE CEM (CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE) NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AND THAT SHOULD SOLVE IT. THEY REPLACED CEM, SO FAR CAR RUNS FINE. THERE HAVE BEEN TOO MANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND VOLVO IS NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS PROBLEM. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE VEHICLE BECAME UNRESPONSIVE TO THE CONTACTS ATTEMPTS TO ACCELERATE. ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ALSO FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS PULLED OVER AND SHUT OFF FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 HOURS. UPON RESTART, THE VEHICLE WOULD DRIVE AS NORMAL BUT ALL OF THE WARNING INDICATOR LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD WERE ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DIAGNOSED AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE RECURRED TWICE AND THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN BACK TO THE INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE MECHANIC WAS STILL UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 97,000.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN DRIVING THE VEHICLE FOR MORE THAN ONE HOUR, THE VEHICLE WOULD EXHIBIT ELECTRICAL FAILURES.
