TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION EQUIPPED WITH GOOD YEAR TRACKER2 TIRES, SIZE: P265-70-R17 (SERIAL NUMBER: 48570555000). THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES WOULD CONSTANTLY LOSE AIR, CAUSING THE TIRES TO BECOMES FLAT WITHOUT WARNING. THE TIRES WERE REPLACEMENT TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TIRE SHOP WHERE TWO TIRES WERE REPLACED, HOWEVER THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURRED WITH THE REPLACEMENT TIRES. THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,000 AND THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 165,713. UPDATED 8/15/13 *CN THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAD TO REPLACE THE TIRES AFTER 1 1.2 YEARS. DURING THAT TIME PERIOD, SHE EXPERIENCED TEN TIRE INCIDENTS.
DRIVE A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION WITH YOKOHAMA GEOLANDER H/T S P265/70R17 AND HAD BLOWOUT OF ONE TIRE ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL. EXTENDED OVER 15 INCHES AND WAS CLOSE TO THE RIM AS EVIDENCED IN MOST BLOWOUTS. THE CAR WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS AFTER A TIRE ROTATION WHEN IT RUPTURED ABRUPTLY. RESULTED IN A TEAR OF ABOUT 12 INCHES AND THEN ENDED IN AN EXTENSION TO THE TREAD. *TR
I WAS DRIVING 65 MPH ON THE FLORIDA TURNPIKE WHEN I HEARD A LOUD BANG FROM THE BACK OF MY 2000 FORD EXPEDITION. I LOOKED IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR TO SEE A TIRES ROLLING AND BEING TOSSED DOWN THE TURNPIKE WITH CARS TRYING TO DODGE THE TIRE. I THOUGHT I HAD JUST ROLLED OVER THE TIRE BUT WHEN I GOT HOME I LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND NOTICED THE TIRE WAS GONE AND THE WINCH CABLE WAS BROKEN. WHILE TRAVELING SOUTH ON I-95 AT APPROX 65 MPH, THE PASSENGER RIGHT REAR TIRE FAILED. IT APPEARS THAT THE FAILURE MODE WAS TREAD SEPARATION/DETACHMENT. THE TREAD ENDED UP WRAPPED AROUND THE REAR AXLE. AT THE MOMENT OF THE FAILURE THE 2000 FORD EXPEDITION TORQUED HARD TO THE RIGHT, BUT CONTROL WAS MAINTAINED. FURTHER INFORMATION ON THIS INCIDENT IS THAT THE FAILED TIRE WAS A REPLACEMENT FOR A RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 02T012000) BY CONTINENTAL TIRE CO. AND REPLACED BY A FORD DEALERSHIP. THE FAILURE OF THE REPLACEMENT TIRE FITS THE EXACT DESCRIPTION AS STATED IN THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION REPORT. *TR

THE DOT NUMBER WAS 4BCUC6WR0306. THEY WERE REPLACEMENT TIRES WITH APPROXIMATELY 35000 MILES ON THEM. THE TIRE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 95000.
WITH NO WARNING SPARE TIRE CABLE SNAPPED WHILE DRIVING DOWN ROAD CAUSING SPARE TIRE TO FALL OUT AND STRIKE REAR WHEEL OF VEHICLE, THEN FLEW OFF SIDE OF ROAD. DISCUSSION WITH FORD INDICATED THIS IS UNHEARD OF AND THEY WANTED $300+ TO REPAIR. DISCUSSIONS WITH MULTIPLE OTHER SHOPS (NOT FORD) INDICATE THIS DOES HAPPEN WITH THIS TYPE OF SPARE MOUNT. DISCOUNT TIRE ADVISED BY ME TO NOTIFY DUNLOP, DUNLOP CALLED ONCE MONDAY BASICALLY ASKING FOR THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT (DISCOUNT TIRE COULD NOT REACH ANYONE OVER WEEKEND AT DUNLOP). I HAVE THE TIRE THAT BLEW OUT AT MY HOME. I BELIEVE THESE TIRES SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED BY NHTSA IMMEDIATELY. TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION, THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 137000. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE HUB CAPS WERE PLASTIC, AND HAD PLASTIC PRONGS THAT PROTRUDED THROUGH A CIRCULAR MEDAL BRACKET. THE BRACKET BENDED,THE PRONG BROKE , AND THAT THE MEDAL BRACKET EXPANDED DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER, AND THIS CAUSED THE BRACKET TO BREAK. I PURCHASED 4 GOODYEAR WRANGLER RT/S TIRES FROM DISCOUNT TIRE CO. ON 1/17/2005 THE TRUCK BEGAN TO SHAKE AND VIBRATE WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED. I RETURNED THE TRUCK TO DISCOUNT THEY REBALANCED AND ROTATED THE TIRES AND INFORMED ME IF THE TRUCK CONTINUED TO VIBRATE TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT MUST BE MECHANICAL. I RETURNED IT TO THE DEALERSHIP, THEY ALIGNED, AND ROADFORCE BALANCED THE TIRES. THEY FOUND THAT THEIR WAS A DEFECT IN THE TIRES BECAUSE TOO MUCH WEIGHT WAS NEEDED TO BALANCE THE TIRES. THEY RECOMMENDED THAT THE TIRES BE REPLACED. I RETURNED THE TRUCK TO DISCOUNT TIRE CO. THEY AGAIN DID NOT FIND A DEFECT IN THE TIRE. I THEN TOOK IT TO A THIRD PARTY BIG O TIRE CO. THEY INSPECTED THE TIRES AND FOUND A "HOP" IN THE REAR TIRES. IT WAS AGAIN RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE DEFECTED TIRES. *NM
OWN A 2000 FORD EXPEDITION (ORIGINAL OWNER) AND HAD TIRES REPLACED AS PART OF RECALL OF 2002. TIRES WERE REPLACED AT LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP WITH GENERAL GRABBER AW P275/60/R17. RECENTLY I NOTICED "STEERING" AND "BUMPY" RIDE, SO I TOOK VEHICLE TO GET IT CHECKED OUT. MECHANIC SHOWED HOW ONE TIRE HAD "BOWED OUT" FEATURE AND EXPLAINED THAT THIS WAS A "TREAD SEPARATION" AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. REMEMBERING PRIOR RECALL FOR SAME REASON, WAS CONCERNED THIS WAS A POSSIBLE MANUFACTURER DEFECT. RESEARCHED ON INTERNET AND FOUND # TO CALL AT CONTINENTAL TO REPORT. CALLED AND SPOKE WITH "BILL" WHO RECORDED MY CONCERNS AND CREATED A FILE #22239. TOLD ME A COULD GO TO NATIONAL TIRE AND BATTERY AND HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. WENT TO NTB AND THE TECHNICIAN EXAMINED THE TIRE AND SAID HE COULD NOT PRORATE THE WARRANTY. I EXPLAINED THAT I JUST WANTED TO INFORM THE MANUFACTURER OF THE POSSIBILITY OF A MANUFACTURER DEFECT IN CASE THERE WERE OTHER COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME TYPE OF TIRE. HE SAID THAT WITH THE APPARENT AGE OF THE TIRE IT COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY A BUMP THAT HAD CAUSED THE WEAKNESS. MY EXPECTATIONS FOR A TIRE IS FOR THE TREAD TO WEAR OUT BEFORE ANY OTHER BREAKDOWN. *NM

THIS 2000 FORD EXPEDITION IS USED AS AN EMERGENCY RESPONSE VEHICLE OPERATED BY PARAMEDICS RESPONDING TO 911 CALLS FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. DURING ROUTINE DRIVING, A PARAMEDIC REPORTED A SUDDEN GRINDING NOISE IN THE FRONT END. HE WAS RETURNING TO THE STATION WHEN THE FRONT RIGHT WHEEL (TIRE AND RIM) CAME OFF. ALL FIVE POSTS WERE SHEERED OFF. VEHICLE UNDERGOES RIGOROUS MAINTENANCE, AND NO PREVIOUS ISSUES WERE REPORTED.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO HAVE AN ALIGNMENT WHEN HE WAS INFORMED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE TREAD HAD SEPARATED AND THAT A SECOND TIRE WAS HAVING A SIMILAR PROBLEM. THE CONSUMER REPLACED THE TIRES AND LATER FOUND OUT THAT THEY WERE RECALLED. THE CONSUMER REQUEST REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE FAULTY TIRES. *NM

I HAD PULLED UP IN MY DRIVEWAY AND THE SPARE TIRE JUST DROPPED OUT ON THE DRIVEWAY.
