NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
Backup camera no longer works
While driving at normal roadway speeds, the vehicle experienced a sudden and unexpected loss of power during acceleration. The engine remained running, but the vehicle failed to respond appropriately to throttle input, resulting in a significant reduction in forward movement. This created a dangerous situation, particularly in traffic conditions where consistent acceleration is required. The issue appears to be related to the transmission or powertrain system, though the exact component failure is UNKNOWN at this time. This condition poses a serious safety risk, as loss of power while driving can increase the likelihood of rear-end collisions or inability to safely merge or clear intersections. The vehicle has been inspected by an authorized dealership; however, they were unable to reproduce the issue during testing and therefore did not perform a repair. Despite this, video evidence of the incident exists and clearly shows the loss of power event. There were no warning lights or messages prior to or during the incident. The failure occurred unexpectedly during normal operation. The problem has not been resolved and may occur intermittently, making it difficult to reproduce under standard inspection conditions. The vehicle remains in service and available for inspection upon request.
While driving the car keeps Jenkins, and on the dash board it cane up have your power train checked. My vehicle has been in the shop 4 times since February over 30 days twice. My vehicle is still currently in the shop at the dealership. They refuse to check my power train area, and keep telling me 2 of the cylinders are backfiring
I took my vehicle in on 2/03/25 for a back up camera recall and to have my transmission checked due it not shifting correctly. I was called within two hours and told the transmission needed to be replaced. Weeks later they called and told me they had good news and bad news, the transmission was replaced, however it would not work. They replaced the transmission for the second time and had me pick up the vehicle on April 17th. I picked the car up and immediately went back in and told her it was not shifting right. They told me to drive it home and see how it did and they would have the service advisor reach out. On the way home, the car was at 5000RPM at 60mph. It was not shifting. The check engine light came on the next day. The car was taken back and I was told on April 21st the transmission needed to be replaced again. I was called on April 7th and told that there was a wire they needed to check that went from the transmission to the pcm and they were going to check it and see if that would fix it. That is 3 total transmissions that have been in this 2022 vehicle. The vehicle is unsafe to drive and Hyundai corporate is not doing anything to help.
3rd time having the same engine issue where the fuel injector keeps going out. Once in February then again in April now again in Jan. The car shakes violently and unsafe to drive even when at a standstill.
I attempted to sound the horn and it failed to sound. I have experienced this problem 2 times previously. The dealer replaced it the 1st time when the vehicle had about 18000 miles. The 2nd time they did not even note it on a service report but when the vehicle was returned to me after an oil change it was working. I contacted the dealer this time because the vehicle is no longer in warranty and requested they repair the horns for free. I was told they would have to get clearance from Hyundai. I noticed that Hyundai issued a TSB 23-BE-009H for the Hyundai Venue for this same problem. The horns on the Santa Fe are mounted low behind the front bumper which subjects them to water from the road when it rains, as it does often, here in Louisiana. I am forced to drive a vehicle without a horn to warn other drivers.
The auto start system (the gas saving feature that shuts the engine off and on when the car idles) causes the car to shut completely off. This has happened on the freeway at a traffic light and while turning into traffic. When the auto start feature is off I don’t have this problem. It’s a major safety issue and I’ve seen numerous complaints about this on Facebook
Horn has stopped working 3 times in 2 1/2 years. Replaced twice under warranty. Now out of warranty.
When reaching between the seats to get a dropped item hand gets stuck on a sharp edge and cannot be pulled out. This happened to me once while driving and to my diluaghters very small hand while parked. Assistance was needed to dislodge hand.
The horn on this. vehicle has been replaced 4 times in 2.5 years. It has failed and on three occasions I nearly hit a pedestrian and other vehicles. I asked my service representative, John King, of Lia Hyundai in Albany NY if there is a recall on this issue. He said no. I researched this problem and found that this is a widespread problem with Hyundai. I feel strongly that eventually someone will be seriously injured or worse in Hyundai does not recognize this problem.
The integrated thermal monitor is stuck. When I took it to Ken Vance Hyundai today, they said it is a common issue and if left unfixed. It would blow the engine.
I have a 2022 santa fe xrt within the 1st yr of owing in 2022 the horn stopped working in the winter. Went to dealership told it was known issue they replaced it. A few months later into following year still winter went out again they fixed again stating my car has 2 horns and both failed. So far 2022 and 2023 2 times. Fast forward to earlier in 2024 beginning of year horn failed again took to dealer expressed my concern of this is a safety and inconvenience issue they apologized but no recall yet. Now it's almost 2025 and I will be taking my car back to the dealership this weekend for yet another time due to the horn not working at all. I've found out my horn has not worked due to driving and a vehicle almost colliding into my lane and went to honk horn and nothing. A separate time a person has cut out in front of me almost causing an accident and all I could do is to lock up my breaks and swerve hope they see me and don't get hit could not beep to warn them. I bought the car brand new in 2022 feb and I have had the horn replaced 4 to 5 times and they still are staying no recall this is ridiculous.
I have had to have a problem with my power teain worked on at two different Hundia dealership I am having an issue where the horn just stops blowing and that isvery dangerous. After switching off and restarting the horn will work again.
backup camera intermittently fails to display
My horn has been having problems on and off for the last year. It’s a 22 Hyundai Santa Fe. It is currently not working. Which is a safety hazard?
The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed. The dealer replaced the high pressure fuel injector pipe, the Gasoline Direct Injection(GDI) fuel injector on cylinder 3, the high pressure fuel pipe, the combustion seal ring, the K bolt, and other unknown parts. The vehicle was repaired under warranty. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
My vehicle made 3 ringing sounds and began to decelerate from 67mph to 0 in less than 2 minutes. I had to pull over quickly to avoid getting rear ended. This incident happened twice already. I took it in to the dealer and they were not able to recreate what happened. This occurrence happened 2weeks ago.
My vehicle has been having repeated issues within 2.5 years of my purchase. Initially it was the transmission and Hyundai service center with poor customer service kept the car for almost 20-25 days before replacing the vehicle. Now, I have picked up the vehicle for less than a week and I get another Powertrain DTC code P030100 and check engine light on. Hyundai service centers are worst in the country, very poor customer service. I have to take my caribou 100 miles away to a different service center because the in town service center wouldn’t even look at the car and says has no appointment. I have to drive the car for about 100 miles with engine light on which poses a major risk to the car and myself to even ben able to get the car service done under warranty. The company advertises best warranty in the industry but makes it hard to fix the vehicle under warranty. Please stay away from buying an Hyundai in future. Thank you.
On [XXX] my car started having trouble accelerating at some times- just happened out of the blue while driving normally. I was almost to my destination, so I parked and when I came back out, there was a message on the car screen that there was a problem with the transmission and to have it evaluated at my convenience. I was near the dealership so I drove there and they were unable to look at the vehicle but I asked if they could at least see what was wrong and if it was OK to drive. They said the code was DTC P1C2D03 and I was probably getting a new transmission. This code also showed up in the app. The TSB for this says that when this code is on the transmission will need to be replaced. [XXX] . They didn't have any appointments for diagnostics until 8/27/24, and told me it was safe to drive. My car continued over those 10 days to hesitate while accelerating at different times while driving. I never knew if I pressed the gas if I would get correct acceleration or not, which makes turning into traffic, merging, etc. unsafe. I also had 1 incident where I was at a stop sign and got no response at all from the gas pedal. I had to turn the car off and back on to get it to go. My car has only 12,000 miles. My car has been at the dealership now for 10 days waiting on them to do the diagnostics. On day 9 they called and said all it needed was a software update of the transmission control unit software and that they performed that update, test drove it twice and it was performing as expected. When I went to pick it up, the person who drove it from the lot into the service bay got out and told me the check engine light was on and there was an error about a transmission issue on the screen. The DTC P1C2D03 code is back on per the My Hyundai app. So they kept the car again and still waiting to find out what they are going to do. The car completely shut off in the middle of driving and I was unable to put the car into park or use the emergency brake and hazard lights because all of the controls are electronic. The lack of mechanical safety features is a danger.
When you go from drive to park it doesn't go into park. If you try to go to park to reverse it won't go into reverse. Has happened 3 times. Have take it in to dealership and found nothing.
My vehicle transmission failed on July 9,2024. There was no warning. The dashboard lite up with a DTC warning and the car would not accelerate properly. I found there was a Recall for the vehicle but it was never sent to me. I was fortunate to be close to home and not on a highway or in a busy intersection at the time. Had I been there could have been a serious accident. My vehicle needed a new transmission which I did receive. The vehicle was only 2 years old with under 20,000 miles on it. The dealer was unable to provide a courteous car so I had to borrow a car from a friend for the week it took to fix the vehicle. Also when I purchased the vehicle on Sept. 16,2022, I was told by the dealership that I would receive courtesy oil changes for three years. The first two were free now they are telling me it was a mistake and they are not. I was forced to pay $94.00 for the oil change to get my car back from the dealership.
The vehicle shuts off completely when stopped at a stop sign, traffic light, or parking space. This has occurred multiple times. Hyundai can not find the problem after multiple times in the shop. The last time it occurred I was in the middle of a busy intersection and was almost broadsided.
On Monday nite returning Tuesday Morning I was coming home from work and I noticed my engine light is on and car is not running properly. I had to drive slower than normal at 12:30 AM I can usually drive the expressway but I am glad I didn’t .I live in Detroit Mi My employer which is Amazon is located in Romulus Michigan so I took [XXX] to [XXX] that when I notice my automobile was not driving as usual so I pull over and I notice my check engine light was on so I restarted my car several and it still was on so I Prayed and drove slow all the way home Thank God I made safely my auto have 7100 miles on it I had one oil change the next one is due at 10,000 miles. So the next morning I was at dealership when it opened and met with the manager at Lafountain Hyundai on Telegraph in Dearborn Mi He tried to diagnose my car and showed but it didn’t work so he told me to take it to Lafountain Dealership in Livonia I arrived and they told me their were backed for three weeks And couldn’t get a appt and when I do I will have to leave like everyone else and I saw all those cars mine just sitting so I ask the reception and she had no answer after I explain so I tried Hyundai Corporate office no answer so I been read all the trouble shooting information but that wouldn’t help because is slipping so I came home and back on the internet and began reading other comment. I can’t leave my car I need to go to work how am going there buses do run out there and I don’t have any other Transportation so my car will just until someone helps me Thank you for excepting my complaint please help me I am losing money how can I pay for my car with no money. Car odometer 5,952 miles Year 2022 Car started driving slowly and would not accelerate. After stopping at a traffic light it started to move sluggishly before loosing all power. Restarted the vehicle and moved to safety, check engine light was illuminated. I looked it up on the app and it provided a DTC code "P1C2D03" which was attached to previous recall regarding transmission issues loosing power. Upon review the recall did not include my vehicle but it has all the hallmarks of the previous recall. the problem my be a more wide spread then initially lead to believed.
The car’s transmissions seems to give out intermittently while driving, where when you accelerate the car nothing happens and you seem stranded on the road at a set speed. The care DTC code check reveals the following error: "A possible condition with your Transmission Control System has been detected with your 2022 SANTA FE”. This code associated with this error is “P1C2D03”. This code seems to have been associated with previous transmission issues with KIA and Hyundai vehicles for which NHTSA has issued recalls. I believe this is a safety issue with hyundai vehicles placing more lives at risk. Thank you and hoping for a resolution.
See attached document for complaint.
Front radar system continues to not work without having damaged caused. Makes cruise control not work. Forward collision not work, etc.
Vehicle lost partial power while driving, would not accelerate past 30 miles per hour. There were no warning lights and it continued for the 30 minute drive home. It was a dangerous situation as the vehicle would not accelerate and barely made it up some hilly roads. The engine would not rev past 3000 rpm's with the accelerated pedal pushed all the way to the floor. Vehicle is at the dealer to determine if they can identify the cause of the problem. It only happened one time as of now.
Middle of May 2024 car begins to feel like it's shifting when accelerating and stopping. Nothing found by Hyundai Service Dept. Lakeland. On apx. [XXX] while driving stepped on gas pedal and felt no power. Kept pumping the pedal & car started jerking. Managed to get to light and get in left lane to turn into plaza honking horn. Car slid to a stop at entrance. On apx. [XXX] my husband was driving home and same thing happened. Managed to slide car into our driveway. Both times the car had to be towed to dealership. Two fuel injectors have been changed and when I asked them to change other two they said warranty would not allow. Worst case scenario is if this happens on the interstate traveling at 75 miles per hour. Not only could we be killed but others. Both times there was no warning lights or any other warning. The car just started jerking and lost power. It can very well cause a car to rear end us and a multiple car chain reaction hurting or worse killing others. I am filled with anxiety every time I take the car out for errands. I also saw a similar incident reported in the Better Business Bureau here in Tampa by another person. I reported my incident to Hyundai Corporation by phone and email and asked the rep to reported it to her superiors to see if they could just please let the dealership replace my other two fuel injectors & I was told they could do nothing. The dealership has told me several times the injectors must fail before they can replace. Apparently, the cost of the injectors is more than someone's life. The Vehicle Trim is "Calligraphy" which comes with an 8 Speed Dual Clutch Transmission. This Transmission is Faulty and i already swapped 4 Transmissions under warranty under 55k Miles. (3 refurbished last one Brand new all having same issue) The Manufacturer *does not* want to admit that this is a Manufacturing Defect. (i opened a ticket #[XXX] with Hyundai Corporate office) The Vehicle surges forward when in "Park" which should not happen and I'm afraid it might result in a bigger risk. There are no fault codes or errors. It is a documented issue with multiple owners and discussed on Forums. This issue is unique to this manufacturer as no other DCT's (some of witch i owned in the past) experience such an issue (as far as i know). I filled up my gas tank and the digital guage was on 266 miles. After I filled up, it was the exact same mileage on the dashboard. It did not move after putting in about 4-5 gallons of gas.
I was driving in the freeway and all of a sudden my engine power became week. I try to step accelerator but it did not cooperate.
Was driving on the highway while it was in cruise control and on several occasions when trying to accelerate the vehicle would jerk aggressively and struggle to accelerate. It did this about 3 times on my way to my destination. Took it in and they said they couldn’t find anything wrong with it nor could they replicate the issue. No work was on done on it.
Someone ran a red light at low speeds and t-boned my and I flipped over. The damage to the back passenger was minimal that should not have caused my car to flipped which in turn made me sustain multiple injuries including a broken rib for such a minor incident. The safely of this vehicle flipping so easily for such an accident has me very concerned. I have also retained a lawyer for this accident as well.
Engine light comes on and car starts jerking or when I start the car it does it and jerks and drives 5 mph. Cruise control jerks when using it and the sensors go off for no reason.
Three fuel injectors out of four have failed in a year’s time frame. Car shakes, stalls, hesitates, and is dangerous to drive. Waiting for fourth injector to fail.
3 different times in last 3 weeks the car seems to lose power while I’m driving. It will not go above 35-40mph even though I’m trying to accelerate. No warning messages. I had to go slow with my hazards on until it eventually slowly returns to speed. Very scary on the highway.
The car has been taken to the dealer multiple times for not accelerating out of 1st gear when starting up, and also for shuddering at high speeds. We have been stranded, hundreds of miles from home on 2 occasions, first with less than 30,000 miles because the spark plugs needed to be replaced. And the second occasion, also hundreds of miles from home, because the car failed on the highway and limped into a dealership, where one of the fuel injectors was replaced at approx 50,000 miles. The mechanic at this dealership voiced his concerns that these were the original fuel injectors, He said he was aware of the problem, but was only permitted to replace one of the fuel injectors. The car continues to shudder at occasionally, and refuses to shift out of 1st gear at odd times. We have tried to get Hyundai to replace the fuel injectors, but they refuse. I would like this to be serve as a record of our problems so that others can be aware of a problem that exists with these cars. This is a safety issue, as if the car will not accelerate on a highway or crossing a road, it is possible to have an accident. Also, having the car fail on a remote highway is also a safety issue.

The contact owns a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost power steering functionality and the vehicle was difficult to steer. The brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle failed to stop as intended. In addition, several unknown warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle was almost involved in three crashes due to the failure. The contact had to drive the vehicle onto a curb to avoid a crash on one occasion. The contact stated that during the failure, the rear hatch switch became inoperable. The vehicle was taken to the dealer on several occasions; however, the failure could not be duplicated. The dealer replaced several unknown sensors; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact stated that the failure had occurred six times. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to the dealer after the first failure due to the steering failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact stated that the vehicle was at the dealer and scheduled for an inspection by the manufacturer’s engineer. The failure mileage was approximately 17,500.
Ref NHTSA TRACKING # 11557625 Vehicle broke down again within 5K miles and 45 days of prior repair referenced in above case. Similar conditions, highway speed, bucking and vibrating, loss of speed control, no warning. Subsequent repair confirmed same issue (fuel injector) as original breakdown/repair and my initial notification to NHTSA.
On November 28 2023, I was pulling onto a small highway when an alarm went off, car stopped (engine off) as other cars were coming towards me. The message displayed was "autostop is off. Shift to P or N and start engine manually". Because the alarm was so loud and I was concerned, I snapped a picture which will be attached. I immediately pushed start button and was able to get out of the way. I had not turned the Idle Start Stop (ISS) button to off - so supposedly it was on. (You have to push this button to turn ISS off. This happened twice until I was able to get to service department. After much time (and using a loaner car) Hyundai agreed to provide a new battery because of its health. This happened again. I took the car back and the manager showed me a technical service bulletin - regarding my car - "Rough Shift and Hesitation Improved Logic". This didn't sound like Idle Start Stop bulletin but I was assured it was (attached). Though the stall has not occurred since, the ISS icon at times just isn't there. My dealer is communicating with Hyundai to try to keep my car again and provide a loaner. I am reporting this because many others on Hyundai Forums are describing the same incidents. Yet I haven't seen anyone mention the Technical Service Bulletin, even though many have taken this problem to their dealer. To me this needs to be considered for a recall. I had a daughter and grand daughter in my car and had no idea what to do with cars approaching. Fortunately, just pushing start worked. I have read the manual and know what is required for ISS to work. All requirements were net. It is possible the TSB has fixed stall issue so I am mainly reporting for other drivers.
on 11/20/23, Car refusing to accelerate past 30 and not shifting thru the normal gear sequence Engine revving up to 3000 rpms and hesitating to go past 35 or 40 mph Auto start light is lit the entire time in bright amber on the dash of the car Pressed the auto start button and it would not disengage
automatic parking brake does not engage. Brake is totally not functional
Phantom emergency braking occurred on two separate occasions a few months apart while traveling at 50-60 MPH for no reason. Almost rear ended. Flashing red zigzag alert stating “Emergency Braking”. Vehicle towed to dealership for inspection and diagnostics. Afraid to drive on freeway or highway. Dealership unable to reproduce or solve issue first time. Now at another dealership for inspection.
The horn is not working. I looked on google and it says that the manufacturer does not know about the problem and other cars are not working.
On 10/31 I loss power while on the freeway for the 2nd time since August. The car was assessed and fixed according to the dealership. My car threw a 2nd code which was cleared and not fixed due to not showing issues according to the dealership. I got my car back in mid November. I immediately complained that I still had a rough idle and was told my car was fine by the manager via service rep. On 11/28 my car loss power on the freeway again for the 3rd time since August. According to the codes, all my cylinders are failing one by one. This is a huge safety concern. The dealership could care less.
While driving on the freeway yesterday, my sunroof exploded above me. There was no rock or any evidence of anything hitting my car roof to make it explode it just happened out of no where.
The issue with Hyundai 2.5 L turbocharged engines is getting a lot of exposure on-line. My story begins about a year ago with me complaining to the Hyundai service department about my 2022 Santa Fe Limited hesitating, lurching, and stalling (once) following acceleration from a complete stop, all without the Check Engine Light (CEL) illuminating (which the dealership said is needed to initiate troubleshooting). In addition, there is a common thread where dealerships are telling owners that it is "... probably bad gas." On 2 October 2023 the SUV started and was idling very rough, and as I drove off, the CEL illuminated (finally). After turning off the SUV for five minutes, it started fine with no CEL. My OBD-II code reader pulled three codes from the SUV that afternoon: P0300, P0301, and P0302 (Misfire - General, Misfire - Cylinder 1, and Misfire - Cylinder 2). The trouble codes should be sufficient for the service department to locate a problem, and to their credit I was placed in a loaner vehicle when I dropped the SUV off on 7 October 2023. So far (24 October), they have not identified a problem, even though there is a fuel injector Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) for multiple Hyundai vehicles (including my Make/Model/Year) that may or may not apply to my specific vehicle. Bottom line: The vehicle is unsafe to drive (as I told the service manager), has had this problem for approximately one year, and if the vehicle stalls when I am entering traffic it is not going to end well - not for me in a stalled vehicle and not for Hyundai after they had an opportunity to address the problem.
