MY JEEP HAS THE "DEATH WOBBLE"- I'VE SPENT OVER $1000 TRYING TO FIX IT. WHEN GOING OVER 50 ON A HIGHWAY, A SLOW SHAKE QUICKLY TURNS INTO A VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE JEEP BACK AND FORTH UNTIL I'M ALMOST STOPPED (5PMPH-ISH) ON THE MIDDLE OF A BUSY HIGHWAY. I WAS ALMOST REAR-ENDED THE OTHER DAY, AND AM PETRIFIED TO BRING IT ON THE HIGHWAY NOW.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY GOING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH AND UNCONTROLLABLE OSCILLATION OCCURRED IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION AND WHEELS. THE OSCILLATION OCCURRS WHEN GOING AROUND A TURN AND WHEN DRIVING STRAIGHT. THE SHAKING IS SO BAD THE VEHICLE IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. EACH TIME I HAD TO APPLY THE BREAKS TRY AND AVOID TRAFFIC AND PULL OVER ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

MAYBE IF I MARKED A TRAFFIC ACCIDENT OR DEATH CAUSED BY THIS, JEEP WOULD DO SOMETHING. I HAVE COMPLETED A FIX THAT HAS BEEN GOOD NOW FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. REPLACED BALL JOINTS, ADDED TO STEERING SHOCKS TO KEEP STEERING FORWARD, REPLACE BOTH TIE RODS, FRONT END ALIGNMENT, NEW SHOCKS (ALL 4). HAVE PAID OUT MY PART ON KEEPING MY JEEP SERVICED. BUT, JEEP STILL HAS NOT ANSWERED THIS COMPLAINT NOW FOR YEARS. EXPAND QUESTION: WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN. IT HAS BEEN AN ONGOING PROBLEM SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2007. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY TRAVELING 60MPH WHEN THE CAR STARTED SHAKING VIGOROUSLY. I'VE TAKEN THIS TO THE JEEP DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES AND THEY CANNOT FIX IT. THIS HAPPENS AT LEAST 3 TIMES PER WEEK. JEEP NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THIS IMMEDIATELY. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS.
WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH THE VEHICLE HIT SOMETHING ON THE ROAD (SMALL BUMP) WHICH RESULTED IN A VIOLENT SHAKING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE SINCED LEARNED THAT THIS CONDITION IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE DEATH WOBBLE. THE CONDITION WAS SO VIOLENT I WAS FORCED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THIS HAS NOW HAPPENED TWICE IN THE LAST FOUR WEEKS. THE FIRST INSTANCE I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT, THE SECOND INSTANCE I WAS IN A CURVE. THE CONDITION DOES NOT RESOLVE ITSELF ALTHOUGH THE MAGNITUDE OF THE VIBRATION DOES DECREASE WITH SPEED. THE VEHICLE IS UNDRIVABLE WITH THIS CONDITION AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OF 55-70 MPH. THE CONDITION IS INDUCED BY NORMAL UNDULATIONS AND VARIATIONS IN THE ROAD (I.E.: NOT ONLY A HUGE POTHOLE). AFTER STOPPING ON THE SHOULDER AND INSPECTING THE UNDERCARRIAGE I NOTICED NOTHING UNUSUAL. I RESUMED DRIVING HOWEVER, THE CONDITION DID NOT RESOLVE ITSELF AND I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE BELOW 40 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY (AS I HAD NO OTHER OPTIONS). AFTER THE CAR SAT FOR ~30 MINS I DROVE THE VEHICLE AND THE CONDITION WAS NOT PRESENT. EACH OCCURRENCE WAS RESOLVED THE SAME WAY BY ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO REST. CHRYSLER DID RELEASE A TECHNICAL SERVICE ADVISORY THAT DESCRIBES WHAT TO CHECK. MY ISSUE IS THAT BASED ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ENCOUNTERING PROBLEMS WITH RELATIVELY LOW MILEAGE (MY VEHICLE IS AT 65K) THE MANUFACTURER SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE VICE THE CONSUMER TO COVER THE REPLACEMENT OR PREMATURELY WORN PARTS.
I BOUGHT A USED 2007 JEEP WRANGLER 2 DR, 4X4 SOFT TOP, IN OCT 20014. IT HAD 82,000 MILES. I HAD NO PREVIOUS BUYING ON THIS MODEL. I DRIVE MOSTLY HIGHWAY MILES IN NORTH EAST OHIO. I DRIVE ALMOST 90 MILES, ROUND TRIP, PER WORK WEEK. I NOTICED A SLIGHT BOUNCE IN THE FRONT END, SUSPENSION DURING HIGHWAY POSTED SPEEDS OF 65 MILES PER HOUR. I CHANGED THE THE SHOCKS 4 EA.AFTER MY FRONT STRAIGHT AXIAL BEGAN TO BOUNCE UP AND DOWN, WELL THE BOUNCE WAS WORSE, AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TRYING TO HANDLE ROAD CONDITION, EVEN CHANGING ROUTE, TO AVOID THE BOUNCE, AT HIGHWAY SPEED 60 MILES AND UNDER, IT WAS COLD OUT 40 DEGREES, HEAVY TRAFFIC CHRISTMAS TIME, RUSH HOUR, MY JEEP WENT INTO A RADICAL BOUNCE CALLED " DEATH WOBBLE " AS NOTED IN THE JEEP WORLD, NOT NOTED BY JEEP, I HAD THREE, IN THE ROW, ONE WORSE, THAN THE ONE BEFORE. THE BOUNCING CAUSED A TRANSMISSION COOLING LINE TO DIS-LARGE, FROM A SITED COUPLING, TO THE ENGINE RADIATER. THE LOSE OF 4 QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID TO SPILL ON THE 5 LANE HIGHWAY. I NOTICED A LOSE IN SPEED, SMOKE AND RPM ADVANCE, FROM 1800 TO 4000 RPMS IN LESS THAN A MINUTE. NOW I HAD TO NAVIGATE MY WAY THROUGH 4 LANES OF HEAVY 60 MILES TO 75 MILE AN HOUR TRAFFIC, WITH OUT GETTING HIT. WITHIN TWO MILES I MANAGED TO PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER. I HAD A FLASHLIGHT, I LEFT THE ENGINE RUNNING, BECAUSE IT WAS GETTING DARK OUT, I WENT UP FRONT AND LOOKED AT THE FRONT END AND SAW TRANSMISSION FLUID. I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, AND CALLED FOR A TOW. 2 HOURS LATER, PLUS 77.00 DOLLARS, I WENT HOME. I LIVE ON A BUDGET. I WROTE JEEP, BUT WITHOUT A WORD, FROM THEM. SO I LOOKED AT MY OWNERS MANUAL, AND SAW NOTHING ABOUT CHANGING SHOCKS, COIL SPRINGS AT MILES MAINTENANCE SERVICE INTERVALS. I NOTICED YOUR NAME, SO I CONTACTED YOU FOR HELP. I HAVE HAD THE "DEATH WOBBLE" SINCE I PURCHASED MY JEEP. THIS HAPPENED ON BOTH STOCK SUSPENSION AND MODIFIED SUSPENSION AND SO FAR, IT HAS HAPPENED EASILY WELL OVER 160 TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF THIS LAST YEAR (I LOST COUNT AS IT HAPPENS FEQUENTLY). I'VE DISHED OUT WELL OVER $1,000 TO FIX (SO FAR), HAVE HAD TWO ACCIDENTS (NOV. 2, 2014 AND APR. 14, 2015, BOTH MINOR WITH NO POLICE REPORTS MADE EITHER TIME) AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THIS, COUNTLESS NEAR MISSES, MANY A DRINK SPILLED ON THE FLOOR BOARD OR MYSELF THEN THE FLOOR THANKS TO EITHER THE GUT-WRENCHING WOBBLE ITSELF, OR HAVING TO SLAM ON THE BREAKS. EVEN MORE UNSAFE, IS THAT EVERYTIME IT HAPPENS, THE ONLY WAY TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE IS TO STOP IMMEDIATELY OR RISK FURTHER DAMAGE AND/OR LOSING CONTROL. THIS MEANS HAVING TO SLAM ON THE BREAKS MANY TIMES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND HOPE THAT 1.) I'M ACTUALLY DRIVING AS MY FIANC WOULDN'T HAVE THE STRENGTH TO KEEP CONTROL 2.) I MAINTAIN ENOUGH CONTROL TO GUIDE THE JEEP TO AN EMERGENCY LANE SO I CAN STOP SAFELY. 3.) HOPE THAT OTHER DRIVERS ARE PAYING ATTENTION AND DON'T HIT ME. WHEN DRIVING AT ABOUT 50 MPH RIGHT FRONT TIRE HIT A POTHOLE REPAIR/BUMP. THIS THREW MY FRONT END INTO MAJOR OSSCILLATION/WOBBLE. I HAD TO SLOW DOWN TO 35 BEFORE IT WOULD STOP. STEERING STABILIZER IS WAS TO SMALL TO HANDLE EVERYDAY DRIVING AND THE BALL JOINTS ARE JUNK. 600 BUCKS LATER I FIGURED IT OUT SINCE THE DEALERSHIP DIDN'T WANT TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUE AND TALKING TO MECHANIC FRIENDS IT'S A COMMON REPLACEMENT SINCE THE COMPANY USES CHEAP PARTS. ALSO HAVE LOTS OF ISSUES WITH THE ESP, EGR VALVE, FALSE CODES FROM EGR AND O2 SENSORS. AND TODAY MY AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS GONE OFF. AND EVERY SINGLE TIME I GET GAS IT'S SPILLS OUT ALL OVER THE PLACE AND THE THROW OUT BEARING WHINES WHICH I WAS TOLD IS ALSO JUNK AND CAN FAIL RIGHT FROM PURCHASE TO OVER 100,000 MILES. I ENGAGED MY ELECTRONIC SWAYBAR DISCONNECT WHEN I WENT OFF-ROADING. WHEN I RETURNED TO PAVEMENT, I TRIED TO RECONNECT BY PRESSING THE BUTTON ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL, BUT THE LIGHT CONTINUED FLASHING ON THE DASH. I TOOK MY 2007 JEEP WRANGLER RUBICON IN TO THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE, I FOUND THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON ISSUE AMONG RUBICON OWNERS. WHILE DRIVING ROUGHLY 60-65MPH ON HIGHWAY 5 FROM SAN DIEGO TO LA THE FRONT END AND STEERING WHEEL OF MY VEHICLE STARTED TO SHAKE VIOLENTLY AFTER DRIVING OVER ROUGH PAVEMENT. I DECREASED SPEED FROM 60-65MPH TO ROUGHLY 30-40 MPH PAYING ATTENTION TO TRAFFIC AS I VEERED FROM THE 2ND FAST LANE TO THE SHOULDER. THE VIOLENT SHAKING CONTINUED AS I PULLED THE VEHICLE TO SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY UNTIL I REACHED A SPEED OF ABOUT 15-20MPH. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO 2 DIFFERENT JEEP DEALERSHIPS; ONE IN SAN DIEGO AND ONE IN LA. THEY STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I REPLACED THE SHOCKS, TIRES, AND DAMPER ALONG WITH MULTIPLE ALIGNMENTS AND THE PROBLEM STILL PERSISTS. I'M SO AFRAID TO DRIVE IT THAT I RENTED A CAR.
