THE VEHICLE WAS SERVICED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V400000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) BUT THE REMEDY FAILED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
I FIRST NOTICED THAT WHEN TURNING THERE WAS A GRINDING NOISE. I TOOK IT TO A SHOP AND WAS TOLD THE FRONT PASSENGER CONTROL ARM NEEDED REPLACED. I RECENTLY TOOK MY CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE IGNITION SWITCH RECALL AND FOUND OUT THAT THE SPEED HARNESS NEEDS REPLACED AND THAT IS WHAT'S CAUSING THE LIGHT FOR ABS/TC TO BE SERVICED. I HAVE RESEARCHED BOTH OF THESE ISSUES WITH THIS SPECIFIC VEHICLE AND IT APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD ISSUE. WHAT CONSTITUTES A RECALL?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2004 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE CAUGHT FIRE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V701000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
THE CAR RECENTLY HAD AN ENGINE FIRE ABOUT 15 MINUTES AFTER TURNING IT OFF. THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY TOTALED. IT WAS STATIONARY AND IN A PARKING LOT WHEN THE ISSUE OCCURRED, AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT RUNNING.
REGARDS TO GM RECALL 14574. THE MENTIONED OIL LEAK THAT SUPPOSEDLY IS COMING FROM THE ENGINES LEFT FRONT VALVE COVER AND GASKET IS IN FACT COMING FROM THE INTAKE PLENUM GASKET. I HAVE RECENTLY REPLACED IT IN AUGUST OF 2015 BECAUSE THERE WAS ALSO ANTIFREEZE POOLING IN THE ENGINE LEFT SIDE INTAKE PLENUM ALONG WITH OIL. SINCE REPLACEMENT THERE IS NO MORE OIL LEAKAGE. I BELIEVE GM IS TRYING TO FIX A CHEAPER ALTERNATIVE TO THE INITIAL OIL LEAK PROBLEM IN THE INTAKE PLENUM GASKET. I AM AN ORIGINAL OWNER, AND ASE CERTIFIED TECHNICIANAND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN METICULOUSLY MAINTAINED.
MY TRAC CONTROL, AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON RANDOMLY, THE CAR WON'T GO OVER 65, IT BARLEY STOPS AT TIMES, THE BRAKE PEDAL GOES TO THE FLOOR AT TIMES, MY WHEELS ALWAYS SPIN IN THE RAIN, AND MOST EMPORIA TOY IT'S MY EVERY DAY DRIVER I HAVE MY 3 YEAR OLD IN, SO PLEASE GET BACK TO ME ASAP, ALL THE WHEEL HUBS WHERE REPLACED AND THE CODES STILL DIDN'T CLEAR SO I KNOW IT'S A COMP ISSUE SO HELP ME THE BEST YOU CAN. -[XXX]. ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE SHORTLY AFTER SHUTDOWN, OWNER WAS IN STORE SHOPPING. INCIDENT # 2015-00004694
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHEN THE IGNITION WAS TURNED TO THE ON POSITION, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START AND THE AUTO THEFT SYSTEM WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS UNABLE TO BE SERVICED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V400000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) BECAUSE THE IGNITION KEY WAS INCORRECT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 211,415.
WITHIN 10 MINUTES OF ARRIVING TO MY PLACE OF WORK, THE PONTIAC CAUGHT FIRE AND THE FIRE COMPLETELY BURNED THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT RESULTING IN A TOTAL LOSS. 10 DAYS AFTER THE FIRE, I RECEIVED GM SAFETY RECALL 14574 INDICATING THE POSSIBILITY OF AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE. WHEN CONTACTING GM, I AM TOLD THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME SINCE THE CAR IS NO LONGER IN MY POSSESSION. THIS IS EXTREMELY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND SUPPORT FOR A PROBLEM THEY ARE AWARE OF.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER, WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE, BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL SEIZED, THE TRACTION WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED, AND ALL OF THE GAUGES ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FAILED. STEERING BEGAN TO RIDE DIFFERENT AND MADE SOME TYPE OF CONSTANT NOISE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION/BRAKE AREA. CONTROL ARMS, WHEEL HUB BEARINGS AND FRONT BRAKES WERE REPLACED. NOW I'M TOLD THE REAR TIE ROD ENDS NEED TO REPLACED IN ORDER TO ALIGN THE CARE. *TR
RECALL HAS BEEN OPEN SINCE APRIL 2ND 2015 IT IS JANUARY 27TH 2016, GM RECALL # 14574 AND STILL NO RESOLVED ISSUE. I AM ADVISED TO KEEP MY CAR OUTSIDE IN THE MIDDLE OF WINTER SO THERE IS NO ACCIDENTAL FIRE STARTED. I WOULD LIKE THIS ISSUE RESOLVED. I DRIVE MY CAR EVERYDAY AND EVERYDAY I'M THINKING, IS TODAY THE DAY I "BRAKE HARD" "CAUSING OIL" "TO LEAK ONTO THE MANIFOLD" AND MY ENGINE BAY CATCHES FIRE. THIS IS NOT RIGHT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. I AM NOT HAPPY WITH THE LACK OF STEPS THAT GM IS TAKING TO ADDRESS THE RECALL ON MY MINOR SON'S CAR. THE RECALL ISSUED APRIL 2015, BUT I DIDN'T GET A LETTER UNTIL TODAY, DECEMBER 18, 2015. THEIR LETTER STATES THEY DON'T HAVE PARTS AND WHEN I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO ASK WHEN THEY WOULD, THEY SAID "AT LEAST NOT FOR A FEW MONTHS". THIS RECALL STATES THAT HARD BRAKING CAN CAUSE OIL TO LEAK....ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE. WE CAN'T AVOID HARD BRAKING IF TRYING TO AVOID A CAR ACCIDENT AND NOW WE HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE ENGINE CATCHING ON FIRE! THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. YOU NEED TO FORCE GM TO FIX THESE CARS NOW, NOT IN "AT LEAST A FEW MONTHS".
I WAS DRIVING AT A RATE OF 45 MPH AND MY STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP ON ME WHICH CAUSED ME TO GO TOWARDS IN COMING TRAFFIC LUCKILY THE CAR I WAS HEADED TOWARDS STOPPED. I TRIED TO TURN MY STEERING WHEEL BACK TO THE RIGHT BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. I HAD TO STOP MY CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD TO TURN MY STEERING WHEEL BECAUSE IT WAS SO HARD TO TURN. THE GENTLEMAN IN THE OTHER CAR GOT OUT TO HELP ME MOVE MY CAR OUT OF THE ROAD, AND HE WAS ABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. HE TOLD ME TO TURN IT OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON AND THEN I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE IT WITHOUT IT LOCKING BACK UP ON ME THAT DAY. SINCE THEN I HAVE HAD IT LOCK UP ON ME WHILE BACKING OUT OR TURNING INTO THE PARKING GARAGE AT WORK ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. *TR
PROBLEM: THE ABS GETS ACTIVATED WITHOUT CAUSE. DESCRIPTION: I FIRST NOTICED PROBLEM AROUND MARCH, 2015 AND, AT APPROXIMATELY 158,000 MILES. IT WAS BARELY NOTICEABLE AT FIRST, WITH FAINT METAL SCRAPPING-LIKE NOISES BEING EMITTED, THAT COINCIDED WITH SLIGHT PULSATING VIBRATIONS BEING FELT ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AS I APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT ALSO CAME ON, BUT A FEW DAYS LATER, IT WENT AWAY. I TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC, AND THEIR COMPUTER DID NOT SHOW ANYTHING. AS I CONTINUED TO DRIVE IT, THE PROBLEM BECAME MORE OBVIOUS, AS IT BECAME MORE FREQUENT, THE NOISES MORE AUDIBLE, AND THE PULSATIONS MORE PRONOUNCED, WITH THE ABS LIGHT ALSO COMING ON. IT'S AT THE POINT, WHERE, QUITE OFTEN, IF I HAVE TO APPLY THE BRAKES HARDER, THERE TENDS TO BE A SLIP, AND I'M NOT ABLE TO BRAKE AND STOP, WHERE I OTHERWISE WOULD/SHOULD HAVE. SO NOW, I'M NOT ABLE TO USE THE CAR, EXCEPT WHEN I DON'T HAVE ANY OTHER ALTERNATIVE. I CALLED THE LOCAL PONTIAC/GMC DEALER, TO ASK ABOUT ANY RECALLS FOR THIS PROBLEM. THEY SAID NO AND SUGGESTED I TAKE THE CAR IN TO REPAIR IT. SINCE I AM ON A VERY TIGHT BUDGET, I INSTEAD DECIDED TO TAKE IT TO THE LOCAL MECHANIC AGAIN. HE AGAIN HOOKED IT UP TO THEIR COMPUTER, AND COULD NOT FIND ANY CODES RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM. THEY SUGGESTED I HAVE THE ABS SYSTEM REPLACED, BUT THE COST FOR JUST THE PART WAS OVER $200.00. I PULLED UP TO A FRIENDS HOUSE, GO INSIDE, AND 5-10 MINUTES LATER WE HEAR A LOUD BOOM! SO WE LOOK AT EACH OTHER WONDERING WHAT CAUSED IT. WE LOOK OUTSIDE AND THE CAR WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT RULED IT AS AND ELECTRICAL FIRE. I HAD THE CAR ONLY 34 DAYS AND IT IS NOW TOTALED! AFTER ALL THE EXCITEMENT I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE VEHICLE AND CAME ACROSS SIMILAR STORIES, THE GM CRISIS DEALING WITH A LARGE NUMBER OF RECALLS. I ALSO FOUND THAT MY VEHICLE IS ON THE RECALLED LIST! A LOCAL DEALERSHIP SOLD ME THE CAR AND IT IS UNDER RECALL WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THIS? *TR
WHILE SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT, SMOKE WAS COMING SEEN FROM UNDER THE HOOD. DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO MOVE VEHICLE TO PARKING LOT. WHILE MOVING TO PARKING LOT, BLACK SMOKE STARTED COMING INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT VIA THE AIR VENTS. DRIVER CALLED 911, AND FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ABLE TO CONTAIN THE FIRE. THE ENTIRE ENGINE COMPARTMENT WAS INVOLVED IN THE FLAMES, AND THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. THERE HAD BEEN NO PRIOR PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR. *TR

WAS FORCED TO LEAVE MY INFORMATION ON VOICE MAIL. NO RETURNED CALL RECEIVED. MADE SECOND ATTEMPT WITH ANOTHER MESSAGE. NO RESULT. WROTE LETTER TO OWNER OF DEALERSHIP WITH AN EXPLANATION OF EXPERIENCE. NO RESPONSE OR CALL FROM HIM. CONTACTED PONTIAC NATIONAL CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER. ON THANKSGIVING DAY 2014 MY CAR COUGH ON FIRE 10 MINUTES AFTER MY DAUGHTER AND I GOT OUT OF THE CAR. I WALKED INTO A FAMILY MEMBERS HOUSE AND HEARD WHAT SOUNDED LIKE A SHOTGUN GO OFF WITHIN ABOUT 5 TO 10 SECONDS LATER ANOTHER. I WENT OUTSIDE TO SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON TO FIND MY CAR ENGULFED IN FLAMES. WE IMMEDIATELY CALLED 911. THE CAR WAS PARKED NEAR A BUILDING STRUCTURE WITH 4 OR MORE VEHICLES PARKED INSIDE. I QUICKLY TRIED TO REMOVE MY IMPORTANT PROPERTY, POCKETBOOK, AND GRABBED A WATER HOSE TO TRY TO KEEP THE FLAMES AWAY FROM THE STRUCTURE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. THE ENTIRE FRONT COMPARTMENT, MOTOR MOUNT AND ENGINE MELTED, WAS BURNED TO THE GROUND. THE INSIDE DASH AND FLOORBOARD WAS MELTED WITH LARGE HOLES BURNED IN THEM, AND BOTH FRONT TIRED EXPLODED AND ENTIRELY MELTED AS WELL. I HAD JUST LEFT MY HOUSE WHERE THE CAR COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN PARKED IN MY GARAGE AND SET THE ENTIRE HOUSE ON FIRE. I HAVE TRIED TO STAY IN CONTACT WITH GM FOR ALMOST A YEAR. THEY REFUSED TO RETURN MY PHONE CALLS AFTER THE INITIAL TWO, TELLING ME IT WOULD TAKE A FEW WEEKS, FOR 6 MONTHS. THEY NOW REFUSE TO HELP ME IN ANY WAY. I WILL NEVER PARK A CAR IN AN ATTACHED GARAGE TO MY HOUSE EVER AGAIN IN FEAR OF MY FAMILY'S SAFETY. I RESEARCHED THIS CAR FOR RECALLS TO FIND THAT THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF RECALLS FOR THIS EXACT PROBLEM UP UNTIL 2003 MODELS, ALSO TO FIND THAT THIS ISSUE HAD CONTINUED IN THE 2004 MODELS WITH NO RECALLS AND FEAR THE SAFETY OF OTHERS WITH THESE CARS. GM NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEIR MISHAPS AND TAKE SAFETY SERIOUSLY.

THE FIREMEN HAD TO USE A CROWBAR TO OPEN THE HOOD TO GET TO THE FIRE. I THINK THAT THE CAR SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE RECALL OF THE 2003 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX AS THE FIRE HAPPENED EXACTLY AS OTHERS DESCRIBE - NO PROBLEMS RUNNING, NO INDICATION OF TROUBLE BY WAY OF WARNING LIGHTS.
