This page combines three types of NHTSA data: recall campaigns (official manufacturer or government actions), owner complaints (unverified consumer reports), and crash test ratings (where available). A vehicle with many complaints is not necessarily less reliable — complaint volume correlates with sales volume and vehicle age. Recalls indicate identified defects, not overall quality. To compare this model year with others, use the year navigation in the sidebar or return to the model overview page.
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Corolla Cross vehicles. The instrument panel may have been produced without the required perforation, which could result in the front-passenger air bag not deploying properly. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safey Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
Remedy Status
Dealers will inspect and replace the instrument panel, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 10, 2023. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 23TB04/23TA04.

Hello, I was involved in a accident o March 11 2025 in [XXX] on [XXX] and [XXX] It happened around 2pm cst. There was substantial damage to my vehicle, and my Air Bags did Not Deploy. There are no recalls for this on the vehicle, but Toyota has sent recalls out on other 2022 and 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross's, but not ours. The vehicle was towed by Anderson Towing and Collision. I reported this to my insurance company Progressive. The vehicle is being stored there for now at Anderson's [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
VEHICLE: 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross L FWD MILEAGE: 40,000 miles DATE OF FAILURE: [Insert date] DEFECT DESCRIPTION: My vehicle's coolant bypass valve (part #16671-F2010) has failed, causing coolant leaks and triggering error codes. An independent shop diagnosed the issue as a defective coolant bypass valve before I took it to the Toyota dealership for confirmation. SAFETY CONCERN: This is a known defect affecting multiple Toyota models from 2019-2023. Coolant bypass valve failures can lead to engine overheating, potential engine damage, and loss of vehicle control if the engine fails while driving. This creates a serious safety hazard. MANUFACTURER RESPONSE: Toyota issued Customer Support Program 24TE04 covering this exact defect for 2020-2021 Corollas and certain RAV4 models. However, they arbitrarily excluded 2022-2023 Corolla Cross vehicles despite using THE IDENTICAL DEFECTIVE PART (F0010 coolant bypass valve) in all gas models through early 2024. Toyota dealership charged me $99 for a diagnostic to confirm what was already known. The repair quote was nearly $1,000. Toyota Corporate denied goodwill assistance, stating they only provide it to "loyal customers" who have spent significant money on servicing or own multiple Toyotas. CONSUMER IMPACT: This is the same defect that led to the class action lawsuit Barrientos v. Toyota. Toyota settled privately and created CSP 24TE04, but deliberately excluded newer model years with the same defective part. Consumers with 2022-2023 vehicles are forced to pay $900-1,300 out-of-pocket for a manufacturing defect that Toyota has already acknowledged in other model years. REQUESTED ACTION: I am requesting NHTSA investigate why Toyota's Customer Support Program excludes 2022-2023 model years when they contain the identical defective coolant bypass valve. Toyota should be required to extend CSP 24TE04 to cover ALL vehicles with part #16671-F2010 or F0010, regardless of model year.

Have Toyota Premier vsa Protection plan-Toyota states not part of protection??This could have killed us on the highway if the whole rear wheel fell off and we flipped over.
The contact owns a 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed in winter weather, the windshield wipers became stuck to the windshield. The contact stated that the heater vents located near the windshield failed to provide adequate heat to defrost the windshield, even while set to maximum. The contact had to manually clear the windshield, creating a hazardous driving condition. The contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive due to the design of the defroster system. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 31,000.
I was involved in a frontal collision in which I rear-ended another vehicle. The impact was significant enough to cause a fractured sternum due to the seat belt restraint. However, the front airbags did not deploy. I had a passenger in the vehicle, and we were both wearing our seatbelts at the time of the crash. I am concerned that the airbags failed to deploy despite the severity of the impact and the resulting injury. I believe this may indicate a defect in the airbag system or the airbag control unit (ACU). I am submitting this report to ensure the issue is investigated and to help prevent potential harm to other drivers. After the collision the car was not drivable due to an airbag error message on the dash of the vehicle. It had to be towed away from the scene and will not be repaired. Injury: Yes — fractured sternum Medical Attention Received: Yes — X-Ray and CT Scan indicate a fracture to the upper sternum Police Report Filed: No Crash Photos or Documentation Available: Yes - insurance company has them
The vehicle is sensing passengers in the back seat when there isn't any and starts to beep excessively until all the seat belts in the back are secured (even without a person in the seat.
under normal driving conditions on a state highway the Engine Malfunction error displayed on my Multi-Information Display. The error indicated that I find a dealership and have the car inspected. The error would go off then come back during acceleration. after two days at the local Toyota Dealership I was told the Coolant Bypass Valve was stuck in the closed position and it would have caused stalling during acceleration and engine overheating at normal speeds. the dealership replaced the valve and flushed the 100K coolant at my expense of over $800. The issue reappeared moments after I took delivery of the repaired vehicle as I was accelerating onto the highway from their parking lot. this is a well known issue that affects 2019-2023 Camry and RAv4 models and I believe the 2022 Corolla Cross has the same defective part in its engine (all engines come from Japan) no matter where the vehicle is assembled.
Car is 76000 miles , I just purchased the vehicle however coolant bypass valve decide to make car say Engine maintenance require even after having it serviced for an oil change. After I replaced the valve , now the pop up Engine maintenance light did not pop up after that. That was the problem .
Bypass coolant valve for the engine needed replacement, multiple other Toyotas within the year range needed the same fix right after warranty ended at a specific mileage. Was told my engine would fail if not addressed or fixed.
Twice in 2 years the fuel gauge didn't go past 3/4 mark after it was filled all the way. After 2 days and refilled, the gauge went back to the full mark.
It was around 7pm. It was raining & wipers were on. Auto stop/start setting is on. I was at a stop light waiting to turn left. The light turns green and I try to go, but the engine stalled. I was unable to move forward into the lane, and turn the wheel. A sign on the dashboard showed up saying "engine stopped, steering power low". I try to the turn the wheel and was unable to, I tried to turn off the engine and the car shuts off. I turn the key again to start the car but it wasn't starting. It was about 3 min until the car engine throttles on and I pull over to the left into the parking lot. It was really scary. I managed to get home, which was less than a mile away. Grateful I got home. My safety was at risk at a busy and rainy intersection. Many cars went around me.
The driver seat goes down after a few days of driving my Corolla Cross LE 2022. I have to manually lift it up every time.
I was driving on [XXX] in Miami, FL. As I stopped at a red light, the STOP/START process powered the car down. Then, all systems turned off. I put the car in park and turned the key, the engine would not turn over. I was stranded in the middle of traffic. To no avail, I tried to start the engine at least five times. Strangers helped me to push the car to the side of the road. After about 15 minutes, the car turned on weakly. I drove immediately to the Toyota dealership. I was driving in the rain using the windshield wipers came to a stop and the engine start stop. The engine stopped and a warning sign came on saying the engine is stopped. \ power fluid low/ The steering wheel also would not turn. I had to put my hazard lights on, put the car in park and then restart the car.. this could be dangerous if I had been on the freeway.
Approx. 1/4 mile after merging onto the interstate; and accelerating to highway speeds, the tire wire in the middle of the tread seemingly exploded. No objects in the road. 215/65R17
On [XXX] at [XXX], my 2022 Corolla Cross popped up with the message “Engine Maintence Required Visit Your Dealer.” I sat on the phone with Toyota for an hour and a half scheduling and asking for help. I got my car in July of 2024, I only had driven my car for a MONTH when this happened. It was a certified GOLD used toyota vehicle. I went to Lia Toyota of Northampton at 9:00am for my appointment and they could not get me a diagnosis until Monday morning. I drove 100 miles across the state to Ira Toyota of Danvers to get my car looked at. I was in the waiting room for six hours waiting to hear updates— I didn’t get one until two and a half hours of waiting. They said it was a COOLANT BIPASS VALVE issue. And it was a serious one. This was a SERIOUS danger to me and my car. I had to drive 100 MILES to get it fixed. HOWEVER: to get this fixed I missed 6 HOURS of Work, totalling to 195.96 dollars in MISSED payroll. I also had to take TWO HOURS (another 65.32) to get my car fixed. I also spent half a tank of gas to get there (20 dollars). I also missed CLASS on Friday to go to and from my appointment (1.5 hours of missed classes/work). I had a LOT of emotional strain during this. I was ping ponged across the state and told very scary stuff. I am absolutely appalled by this and I want to make sure my voice is heard. Hello. The moonroof appears to malfunction as it doesnt improperly close and doesnt know have proper sensor to shut or stop sliding. I got soaked during carwash but thankfully not soaking the interior electronics. Please consider for possible recall.
The car engine shuts off while in the drive position randomly while at a stop.
The phone charger stopped working. During driving, the dashboard lights up and then break failed and steering became out of control. As a result, car crushed to another car and went to different lane and hit another car. All airbags deployed. Car is total loss. Police was at the scene. All drivers have minor injuries. Reported the issue to the insurance.
When driving in the rain and my start/stop function is turned on, my car will turn off and make a loud beep with a message stating “engine stopped steering power low”. The check engine light and the power steering light pop up on the dashboard and I have to restart the car. This happens in the middle of traffic and is scary to think that it can happen any time while I’m driving. My car has less than 15,000 miles on it. This has happened numerous times, but more and more frequently lately.
