WHEN GOING UP A HILL IN 4TH GEAR CAR SHIFTS DOWN TO 3RD GEAR TO MAINTAIN SPEED & THERE IS A LOUD NOISE THAT SHAKES THE CAR (AS IF THE ENGINE'S GOING TO FALL OUT). HAPPENED ABOUT 20 TIMES SO FAR. TOYOTA DEALER MECHANICS GOT CAR TO REPEAT THIS 3 TIMES (ONCE HOOKED UP TO A COMPUTER). THE MECHANICS & THE SERVICE MANAGER ALL FEEL THAT THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I HAVE 100,000 MI. EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE PERSON FROM TOYOTA (NOT FROM THE DEALERSHIP) THAT HAS TO APPROVE PUTTING IN A NEW TRANSMISSION REFUSED SAYING IT IS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM. HE THEN SAID IT WAS THE WAY I USE THE GAS PEDAL. THEN WHY DID IT HAPPEN ON THE 3 ROADTESTS WHEN BROUGHT TO DEALER. THE SHIFT INTO 3RD (ON A HILL) IS SO VIOLENT THAT I'M AFRAID TO KEEP UP SPEED ON THE PARKWAY WHEN GOING UP A HILL. I PULL INTO THE SLOW LANE & PUT ON MY FLASHING LIGHTS & STAY AT 50 MPH OR LESS. I FEEL THAT THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE 90,000 MI. ON IT. I HAVE REPORTED THIS INCIDENT TO TOYOTA CUSTOMER RELATIONS ON THE PHONE (THEY ARE BASED IN CALIFORNIA). THEY SAID THEY WOULD LOOK INTO IT & GET BACK TO ME IN 3 DAYS (TOMORROW). I HAVE BOUGHT 4 TOYOTAS IN A ROW & GOT MY SISTER-IN-LAW & HER SON TO EACH BUY ONE. IF THIS IS HOW TOYOTA TREATS A LOYAL CUSTOMER (ALL CARS ARE SERVICED AT TOYOTA) THEN I GUESS I & MY FAMILY WON'T BE BUYING ONE AGAIN. I PAID A GOOD DEAL OF MONEY FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL BECAME STUCK. EACH TIME THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS APPLIED, THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THE CONTACT DROVE OVER THREE CURBS, A YIELD SIGN, AND A STOP SIGN. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BACK PAIN AND RECEIVED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT WAS TREATED AND RELEASED THE SAME DAY. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED AND TOWED TO AN IMPOUND YARD. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. TL* TAKATA RECALL. THE CONTACT OWNED A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION. THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AND METAL FRAGMENTS PASSED THROUGH THE AIRBAG CUSHION MATERIAL. AS A RESULT, THE METAL FRAGMENTS ENTERED THE CONTACTS EYE AND CAUSED A LONG TERM INJURY. THE CONTACT ALSO SUSTAINED A FRACTURED UPPER JAW AND NOSE INJURY THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE CONTACT MENTIONED HAVING CONTINUAL DOCTOR VISITS FOR HIS EYE INJURY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND TOWED TO JUNK YARD. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V024000 (AIR BAGS). TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, SMOKE STARTED TO EMIT FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND ALL OF THE WARNING LAMPS ILLUMINATED. THE BRAKES ALSO FAILED TO ENGAGE WHEN DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT SHE HAD TO ENGAGE THE EMERGENCY BREAK IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THREE MINUTES LATER, THE VEHICLE HAD BECOME ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CONTACTED AND NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DECIDED TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY AN ENGINEER IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHAT CAUSES THE FIRE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 25,000.
INVESTIGATION RESULTS OF REPORT#-426903 GIVEN 2/12 OF UNINTENDED ACCELER: WAS INVESTIGATED BY SPX CORP. INVESTIGATOR HIRED FROM TOYOTA. AT MY APT. SETTING, IN MY RESERVED PARKING SPOT BECAUSE CAR COULD NOT BE DRIVEN DUE TO SEVERE FRONT END DAMAGE. I WAS GIVEN A MEMORY STICK WITH EDR DOWNLOAD INFO., TELLING ME TOYOTA WILL RESPOND. 22 PDF PAGES, 19 WERE BIZARRE MATH EQUATIONS, NEVER TO BE UNDERSTOOD. MY EVENT SHOWED WHEN IGNITION TURNED ON ENGINE AT 1600RPM, TO 800RPM, AS I BEGAN TO MOVE, THEN WENT TO 2000RPM, IN LESS THEN 60 SECONDS, WITHIN A SMALL LANE, PLUNGING ME INTO BRICK WALL. LETTER FROM TOYOTA ADMINISTRATOR SAID NO FAULTS WERE FOUND, SORRY CANNOT BE OF ASSISTANCE. IN THE 3RD PARAGRAPH WAS FALSE INFO. RE: EXTENSIVE TEST DRIVE DONE TO TEST BRAKES, ETC. EVERYTHING WORKING WELL. I CALLED HIS DIRECT # LEAVING A MESSAGE IN REGARD TO I HAD SERIOUS QUESTIONS "TEST DRIVE"? LEAVING MY NAME & #. HE CALLED NEXT DAY TO APOLOGIZE, "I MISSTATED THE TEST DRIVE", AT THE SERVICE CENTER IT WAS DRIVEN A SHORT DISTANCE, I SAID SERVICE CENTER? TM- YES!, I SAID STREET OUTSIDE MY APT. DOOR? TM- YES!. THEN SAID PARKING LOT? TM- WITH HESITATION, YES! ASKED IF HE WAS SURE OF THE OUTCOME, YES! NEXT DAY VIA FAX I WROTE TO HIM TELLING HIM THAT HE MADE MANY MISSTATEMENTS! THERE IS NO STREET BY MY APT., CAR NEVER WENT TO A SERVICE CENTER, HAVE LO JACK TELLING ME THE CAR WAS NEVER MOVED SINCE COLLISION.WHICH I KNEW SINCE FRAME IS SEVERELY BENT, BUMPER RESTS ON GROUND, ALL OIL LEAKED OUT. IF THIS IS HOW A ADMINISTRATOR OF TOYOTA CLAIMS RESPONDS WITH OUTRIGHT LIES, HOW MANY TOYOTA OWNERS HAVE BEEN DECEIVED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH ON A MOUNTAINOUS ROAD AND UNEXPECTEDLY FELL ASLEEP. THE VEHICLE ROLLED DOWN A RAVINE AND CRASHED INTO TWO TREES AND BOULDERS. THE CONTACT FRACTURED HIS STERNUM AND SUSTAINED BRUISES FROM THE SEAT BELT. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED OF THE INCIDENT. THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY WITH THE IMPACT AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A COLLISION CENTER TO DETERMINE THE SEVERITY OF THE DAMAGE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000.
WE ARE A FIRST TIME CUSTOMER OF TOYOTA VEHICLE. WE BOUGHT A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX S AWD (VIN: [XXX]) WITH 22K MILES FROM CALDWELL TOYOTA IN JULY 2010. THE CAR NOW HAS 26K MILES AND ALL BRAKES ARE BROKEN. THE CAR IS USED ON A DAILY BASIS BUT FOR VERY CLOSE DISTANCE. THE CAR WAS SUPPOSED TO BE CERTIFIED AND FULLY SERVICED AND REPAIRED BY THE DEALER WHEN WE BOUGHT IT. THERE HAS BEEN LESS THAN 1 YEAR AND 4K MILES ON THE CAR SINCE WE BOUGHT IT FROM THE CALDWELL TOYOTA. WE FEEL STRONGLY THERE IS A QUALITY ISSUE WITH THE CAR AND WOULD LIKE TO HAVE IT EXAMINED AND REPAIRED WITH NO CHARGES TO US. BUT BOTH THE DEALER AND TOYOTA REFUSED TO DO SO. WE WOULD LIKE TO JUST HAVE A WRITTEN RECORD OF THIS ISSUE IN CASE THERE ARE MORE AND MORE FATAL ISSUES WITH THIS CAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING FAILED WITHOUT WARNING IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS STARTED. THE STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS VERY HARD TO TURN TO THE LEFT OR RIGHT. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER; HOWEVER, WHEN HE MADE A LEFT OR RIGHT TURN, IT WAS VERY DIFFICULT. THE CONTACT HAD TO USE THE OUTER LANE TO SAFELY MAKE A TURN. THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THE COMPUTERIZED POWER STEERING UNIT FAILED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 18,040. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED, SHE CAME UPON A LARGE ROAD GRADER. SHE BRAKED TO SLOW DOWN, DISENGAGING THE CRUISE CONTROL. WHEN SHE COULD SAFELY PASS, SHE ACCELERATED QUICKLY TO GET AROUND ANOTHER VEHICLE. AFTER SHE PASSED THE VEHICLE, THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE VERY FAST, AFTER SHE REMOVED HER FOOT FROM THE ACCELERATOR AND APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN, IT ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL. SHE RESPONDED BY CONTINUOUSLY PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL VERY HARD AND SHE ALSO PRESSED THE BUTTON TO TURN OFF THE CRUISE CONTROL. ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE WAS FIGHTING THE BRAKES, SHE MANAGED TO SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN AND PULLED TO THE SIDE, PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL, BUT THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO ROAR. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE MAT AND IT WAS NOT IN ANY POSITION TO HOLD THE ACCELERATOR DOWN. THE FAILURE OCCURRED TWICE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED PER RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 10V023000 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL). THE FAILURE OCCURRED SIX MONTHS AFTER THE RECALL REPAIR. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER NEEDED TO BE NOTIFIED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WOULD PERFORM A TEST DRIVE AND CALL BACK TO SCHEDULE THE DATE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 40,000.
2009 TOYOTA MATRIX S STALLED WHILE STILL DRIVING, SOMETIMES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. BEEN DRIVING FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES THEN SUDDENLY STALLS AND IS UNABLE TO RESTART. DEALER SAYS THEY CAN'T RECREATE OR FIND PROBLEM. MAY BE SAME PROBLEM WITH 2005-2008 MATRIX. *TR
2009 MATRIX XRS CERTIFIED VEHICLE PURCHASED WITH 33,000 MILES AROUND 2010, CURRENTLY 48,000 MILES AND HAS 5 YR, 100,000 MILE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THIS VEHICLE IS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE WANDERS INTO THE LEFT OR RIGHT LANES AND DRIVER MUST FIGHT TO KEEP THE VEHICLE IN A STRAIGHT LINE. THE LOCAL CHANTILLY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP DENIES THE ISSUE AND ANY TSB. THE STEERING ON THIS VEHICLE IS DANGEROUS AND WARRANTS FURTHER REVIEW BY NTSB IF TOYOTA CONTINUES TO STONEWALL ITS CUSTOMERS REGARDING SAFETY ISSUES. I WILL FOLLOW UP WITH TOYOTA NATIONAL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WAS NOT A PROBLEM WITH THE TIRES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. I HAVE A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX THAT HAS MULTIPLE ISSUES INCLUDING A STEERING ISSUE THAT ALMOST CAUSED MY FAMILY THEIR LIFE, NOW I AM BEING TOLD I NEED NEW BRAKES AT 19,800 MILES. THE REAR BRAKES ARE NOT ADJUSTING AT ALL WHICH MAY BE CAUSING THE STEERING ISSUES. CAR IS HAVING INTERMENT ISSUES GOING INTO 1ST AND REVERSE, REPORTED MULTIPLE TIMES, TOYOTA SAYS THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE. CAR IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. ALSO, ONE TIRE IS WEARING ON ONE SIDE WHICH IS A KNOWN ISSUE. THE STEERING ISSUES HAS BEEN REPORTED ALONG WITH THE ONE TIRE WEARING ISSUE BY OVER 500 PEOPLE BUT TOYOTA WILL NOT RECOGNIZE IT. I AM SCARED TO TAKE MY CAR ON THE INTERSTATE DUE TO THE STEERING ISSUE AND THIS IS A NEW CAR WITH LOW MILES. MY FAMILY IS AT RISK OF BREAK FAILURE, OR WORSE DUE TO THE DEFECTS. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA,M THEY SAID IF I RIDE MY BREAKS A LOT, THAT COULD BE THE CAUSE. I DO NO SUCH THING. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 9000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. WHILE THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, ENTERING A CIRCLE IN THE ROADWAY, THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS ENGAGED WITH NO POWER RESPONSE. THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE WAS TRAPPED IN BETWEEN THE STAIRWAY AND SIDEWALK. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED FOR THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE SUSTAINED EXTENSIVE FRONT END DAMAGES. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER. THE INSURANCE COMPANY HAD NOT INSPECTED OR DECLARED THE DAMAGES TO THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE COMPLAINT. MY CAR IS A TOYOTA MATRIX S 2009, THIS VEHICLE HAS GIVEN ME PROBLEMS SINCE THE EIGHT MONTHS IT WAS PURCHASED WITH A MILEAGE OF 8000 MILES AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, VSC OFF, 4WD AND WARNING SLIP WAS SEIZED WITHOUT REASON, AND THE ENGINE MADE ME A VERY LOUD NOISE, LIKE A BIG TRUCK ENGINE, THIS HAS ALREADY BEEN HAPPENING TO ME FOR 6 CONSECUTIVE TIMES LATELY I HAVE THIS PROBLEM 3 TIMES IN A ROW IN A MONTH, EACH TIME I REPLACED THE CRANK SENSOR AND WATER PUMP, BUT THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, I TRANSPORTED DAILY TO MY CHILD IN THIS CAR AND I AM APPALLED EVERY DAY FEARING AN ACCIDENT, DO NOT WANT THIS CAR BUT NOW I'M IN THE PROCESS OF ARBITRATION RETURN, DO NOT I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE TOYOTA CORPORATION, HAS HAD MANY CONCERNS ABOUT SECURITY IN THEIR PRODUCTS. *TR
2009 TOYOTA MATRIX STALLS RANDOMLY 3 TO 7 TIMES A DAY. STALLS OCCURRING RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING, INCLUDING SOME ON HIGHWAYS AND SOME IN INTERSECTIONS. CAR MUST BE TURNED OFF AN PUT INTO PARK OR NEUTRAL IN ORDER TO START CAR BACK UP. *TR
WHILE DRIVING WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED AND TRAVELING IN THE RIGHT LANE ON AN INTERSTATE, I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN FROM 65 TO 55 AS I APPROACHED A TRUCK IN FRONT OF ME. THIS WAS DONE TO ALLOW A CAR IN THE PASSING LANE TO PASS ME. WHEN THAT CAR HAD PASSED, I RELEASED THE BREAK TO PASS THE TRUCK AHEAD OF ME AFTER HAVING HAD THE BREAK APPLIED FOR 5 OR 6 SECONDS (FAR LONGER THAN NECESSARY FOR THE CRUISE CONTROL TO HAVE SHUT OFF.). WHEN I RELEASED THE BREAK, THE CRUISE CONTROL RE-INITIATED ITSELF AND THE VEHICLE RETURNED TO 65 MPH WITHOUT MY TOUCHING ANY FURTHER PEDALS. MY FEET WERE ON THE FLOOR AND THERE WERE NO FLOOR MATS NEAR THE PEDALS. THE CRUISE CONTROL ALONE WAS ACCELERATING THE CAR. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED WHILE BRAKING AND SLOWING THE VEHICLE TO 5 MPH FOR A TRAFFIC STOP, THE VEHICLE ABNORMALLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF A TRUCK. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE ON INTERSTATE 495 OF THE WASHINGTON BELTWAY SITTING IN A 3 MILE BACKUP WHERE 5 LANES WERE MERGING INTO ONE. MY FOOT WAS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE LEAVING PLENTY OF ROOM FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. ALL OF A SUDDEN I REALIZED THAT THE CAR WAS INCHING FORWARD AND THE BRAKE WOULD NOT STOP THE ACCELERATION. MY HUSBAND REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING AND LOOKED DOWN AND KNEW THAT MY FOOT WAS FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE. ALL OF A SUDDEN, IT JUST STOPPED AS FAST AS IT STARTED. WHILE THERE, I WAS INFORMED OF ANOTHER RECALL ON THE CAR, ON ITS BRAKES. BOTH OF THESE ISSUES WERE ADDRESS AND I PICKED THE CAR UP ON FEBRUARY 13TH. ON FEBRUARY 24 AT 7:45AM, I WAS DRIVING WESTBOUND ON I-90 IN WESTLAKE, OHIO; IT WAS SNOWING AND THE ROADS WERE WET, UNSALTED. AS I WAS ROUNDING A CORNER NEAR THE CROCKER BASSETT EXIT, MY CAR BEGAN TO SKID. I IMMEDIATELY BEGAN TO PUMP THE BRAKES AND ATTEMPT TO STRAIGHTEN MY CAR OUT, BUT THE BRAKES DID NOT ENGAGE. I FIRMLY PRESSED DOWN ON THE BRAKES AND NOTHING HAPPENED; I THEN TRIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND THE CAR STILL DID NOT SLOW DOWN. I WAS UNABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT BEGAN TO SPIN OUT AND TO THE LEFT. I PUMPED THE BRAKES AS HARD AND FAST AS I COULD, BUT THE BRAKES NEVER ENGAGED AND MY CAR HIT THE CEMENT MEDIAN AT 55MPH. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. HE STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 25 MPH THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED WITHOUT A WARNING WHEN HE APPLIED THE BRAKES AND HIT A TELEPHONE POLE. THE VEHICLE HAS FRONT END DAMAGE AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES. THERE IS NO POLICE REPORT AVAILABLE. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TOWED TO AN AUTO BODY SHOP WHERE THEY ARE INVESTIGATING THE CAUSE OF THE ACCELERATION. THERE HAVE BEEN NO REPAIRS. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 42000.
EXHAUST FUMES IN 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. LEAKAGE IS ESPECIALLY APPARENT AFTER WIDE-OPEN-THROTTLE (WOT) ACCELERATION. THE NOX EMISSIONS FORMED DURING WOT CAN BE SMELLED IN THE CAR. UNDER OTHER OPERATING MODS, THE FUMES ARE LESS NOTICEABLE OR NOT NOTICEABLE. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM; SO "INCIDENT DATE" BELOW IS TODAY'S DATE. *TR
ABOUT 4 WEEKS AGO (AND AGAIN, THIS MORNING, TWICE!), I EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WHEN BRAKING: THE PEDAL WOULD GO MORE THEN USUAL, BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN AT THE SAME TIME AS IT WAS PRODUCING TERRIBLE GRINDING/SCRATCHING NOISES AS IF PARTS WERE COMING OFF. IT IS NOT DOING THIS CONSISTENTLY, BUT SINCE IT HAPPENED TWICE THIS MORNING, I AM CONCERNED. I DID FIND A RECALL NOTICE DATED AUGUST 2009 ON THE BRAKE SYSTEM FOR 12 MORE NORTHERN STATES THAT EXPERIENCED BRAKE PROBLEMS ON 09 AND 10 MATRIX AND COROLLA VEHICLES WITH 1.8 ENGINES DUE TO EXTREME COLD. I LIVE IN THE MOUNTAINS IF NW N-CAROLINA, AND OUR WEATHER IS VERY MUCH LIKE THAT IN MORE NORTHERN STATES. PRESENT, WE HAVE 4-5 INCHES OF SNOW ON THE GROUND, AND TEMPS WERE ABOUT 35-36 THIS MORNING (AWAITING ANOTHER WINTER STORM). WHEN IT HAPPENED LAST MONTH, IT WAS MUCH COLDER, BUT THERE ALSO WAS LOTS OF SNOW ON THE GROUND. *TR
AT 12:30 P.M. I WAS HEADING NORTH ON OH-25 IN BOWLING GREEN, OHIO. MY CAR BEGAN SHAKING, BUT I WAS NOT OVERLY CONCERNED AS WE OFTEN HAVE WINDY DAYS. I TURNED RIGHT ONTO OH-582 AND BECAME SLIGHTLY MORE CONCERNED WHEN THE SHAKING IN THE CABIN DID NOT CEASE. I NOTICED THAT THE CAR DID NOT SHAKE BELOW ABOUT 45 MPH BUT AGAIN ATTRIBUTED THE SHAKING I EXPERIENCED TO MY CAR FIGHTING AGAINST WINDS. I TURNED LEFT ONTO I-75 N AND ACCELERATED TO MERGE WITH TRAFFIC. AFTER MERGING SAFELY INTO THE RIGHT-HAND LANE, I CONTINUED ACCELERATING UNTIL I REACHED 55-60 MPH AND MERGED INTO THE LEFT HAND LANE. SHORTLY, I REACHED 65 MPH. WHEN THE SHAKING, WHICH I HAD SUPPOSED TO BE DUE TO STRONG WINDS, DID NOT CEASE, I ATTEMPTED TO DECELERATE. I PRESSED LIGHTLY ON THE BRAKES TO BEGIN A SLOW DECELERATION, WITH THE INTENTION OF MERGING INTO THE RIGHT HAND LANE AND PUTTING ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS UNTIL I COULD COME TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER. INSTEAD, WHEN I BEGAN TO PUT LIGHT PRESSURE ON THE BRAKES, THE CAR VEERED UNEXPECTEDLY TO THE LEFT. SURPRISED, BUT NOT OVERLY ALARMED, I LET OFF THE BRAKES AND ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THE TRAJECTORY OF THE VEHICLE, WHICH I DID NOT JUDGE TO BE A DIFFICULT MANEUVER. INSTEAD OF COMING BACK INTO THE MIDDLE OF THE LANE AS EXPECTED, THE CAR OVERCORRECTED AND SPUN PERPENDICULAR TO THE FOLLOWING TRAFFIC AND THE SEMI BESIDE ME IN THE RIGHT HAND LANE. THE CAR THEN SLID TOWARD THE SEMI, PARTIALLY UNDER THE BED OF THE TRUCK AND AS MY CAR SLOWED, THE FRONT RIGHT END OF THE CAR MADE CONTACT WITH THE BACK LEFT WHEELS OF THE TRUCK. ON IMPACT, THE FORCE OF IMPACT PUSHED MY CAR BACK OUT THROUGH THE LEFT-HAND LANE AND INTO THE GRASSY MEDIAN WHERE IT CAME TO A HALT. *TR
IN PARKING GARAGE AT PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT - AS I BEGAN TO PULL INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE CAR SUDDENLY ACCELERATED. I IMMEDIATELY HIT THE BRAKES WITH NO EFFECT. THE CAR CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE UNTIL IT HIT THE WALL OF THE GARAGE. TOYOTA DEALERSHIP REFUSED TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE UNTIL BODY DAMAGE IS REPAIRED. CURRENTLY WAITING FOR A TOYOTA INSPECTOR TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT TO INSPEC THE VEHICLE. *TR
THE FIRST THING I NOTICED WAS THAT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WOULD NOT ACCELERATE WHEN I STEPPED ON IT GOING ONTO THE ON-RAMP, ABOUT A MONTH AGO. ON TUESDAY, I WENT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THEY DIDN'T HAVE THE PARTS YET, THAT THEY WOULD CALL ME, AND THAT THEY DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH THE PARTS WHEN THEY GOT HERE. THEY SAID THEY HAD ONE OF THOSE COURSES TWO WEEKS AGO, BUT WHAT THEY LEARNED THERE DOES NOT REALLY APPLY TO THE PROBLEMS THAT ARE COMING ON NOW. SO EVEN WHEN THEY GOT THE PARTS, THEY WOULD HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT TO DO WITH THEM. I TRIED TO ASK FOR A REPLACEMENT OR SOMETHING OF THE SORT, AND THEY SAID THAT THEY DIDN'T EVEN HAVE ANY CARS TO PROVIDE ME BECAUSE ALL THE MODELS ON THE LOT WERE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE NEXT DAY (YESTERDAY), I TRIED TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN AND IT DIMINISHED THE SPEED BUT IT DID NOT STOP COMPLETELY. IT DIDN'T STOP UNTIL THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION AND I GOT A TICKET. *TR

HERRIN-GEAR TOYOTA, JACKSON MS SAYS THIS IS A DIFFERENT ISSUE FROM THE STICKING GAS PEDAL, THIS WAS APPROX ONE MONTH AGO. THEY HAVE FINISHED RECALL WORK FOR STICKING PEDAL BUT HAVE NOT ADDRESSED THE SURGING PROBLEM. *TR
LTR FWD FM (NE) RE UNINTENDED SUDDEN ACCELERATION FROM OWNER OF A 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX INVOLVED IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT ON 1/13/2010, REPLY TO OMAHA, NE OFC. *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED HE REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE ATTEMPTING TO BRAKE, BUT INSTEAD THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE POLICE DID NOT WRITE UP POLICE REPORT. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. UPON INSPECTION, IT WAS DETERMINED THE AIR BAG SENSORS WERE FRIED, PROBABLY WELL BEFORE THE ACCIDENT.
IN VERY COLD WEATHER, WHICH WE HAVE HAD PLENTY OF RECENTLY, AND I MAKE A GRADUAL STOP FROM A SPEED OF 45+ MPH, THERE IS A SPLIT-SECOND SURGE FORWARD FOLLOWED BY A HARD STOP "BUMP" WHEN THE CAR COMES TO A FINAL STOP THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO DESCRIBE IT, THE ROAD SURFACE IS NOT SLICK, NOR AM I MAKING A SUDDEN STOP. THE PROBLEM DOES NOT HAPPEN IN TEMPS ABOVE FREEZING, NOR DOES BRAKING SEEM IMPAIRED. I AM SOMEWHAT UNNERVED BY THE MOMENTARY SURGE FORWARD FOLLOWED BY THE SUDDEN BUMP THAT FEELS LIKE I HIT A CURB. *TR
WHILE DRIVING TO AND FROM WORK I HAVE EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING OF MY 2009 TOYOTA MATRIX. THIS GENERALLY HAPPENS WHEN I AM DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY GOING OVER 40 MPH. THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY VEER AND I HAVE TO COMPENSATE BY STEERING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TO BRING IT BACK ONTO THE ROAD. AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT WAS THE WIND BLOWING MY CAR TO THE SIDE BUT EVEN ON CALM DAYS IT HAS HAPPENED. I HAVE HAD OTHER PEOPLE DRIVE MY CAR WHO HAVE HAD IT HAPPEN TO THEM. IT DOES NOT HAPPEN EVER DAY BUT AT LEAST ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK I EXPERIENCE THE PROBLEM. *TR
