IN AUGUST OF 2009 I BEGAN NOTICING THAT MY VOLVO XC90 T6 WAS SLOW TO SWITCH GEARS OR WOULD CHUG BEFORE SWITCHING. IT WOULD NOT HAPPEN ALL OF THE TIME AND WHEN I MENTIONED IT TO MY HUSBAND HE SAID HE HAD NOT NOTICED IT. I FIGURED IT WAS NO BIG DEAL OR THAT IT WAS RELATED TO A COLD ENGINE. DURING THE MIDDLE OF OCTOBER 2009, I WAS COMING HOME FROM WORK AND MERGING ONTO A TWO LANE BRIDGE WHEN MY VOLVO REFUSED TO SWITCH GEARS AND WOULD NOT GO OVER 20 MILES PER HOUR. THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT WENT ON. THANKFULLY NO OTHER CARS WERE AROUND AND MY LACK OF SPEED DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. AFTER ABOUT 10 MINUTES I WAS ABLE TO SPEED UP AND MADE IT BACK HOME. THE CAR IS IN NEED OF A NEW TRANSMISSION. IT HAS SAT IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR 5 MONTHS BECAUSE I CAN NOT AFFORD IT. I'VE GOTTEN ONLINE ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT I AM NOW A MEMBER OF A RAPIDLY GROWING CLUB OF FRUSTRATED VOLVO OWNERS. IT FRUSTRATES ME THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS YEAR/MAKE OF VOLVO'S. MY CAR HAS 40,000 MILES ON IT. THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IN THESE CARS NEEDS TO BE FORMALLY ADDRESSED. IT IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD WHEN A CAR ALL OF A SUDDEN JERKS AROUND AND WON'T ACCELERATE TO SAFELY MERGE INTO FAST MOVING TRAFFIC. *TR
MY '04 VOLVO XC90 @75K MILES SUDDENLY DEVELOPED A FUEL LEAK IN THE REGION OF THE FUEL PUMP. FUEL IS LEAKING AT A STEADY RATE (THE ENTIRE TANK IN A FEW DAYS). *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. SHE STATED THAT WHILE STARTING THE VEHICLE IT IDLES EXCESSIVELY AND THEN THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF. AFTER SHE TURNS THE VEHICLE BACK ON AND OPERATES NORMALLY AND THEN BEGINS IDLING ONCE AGAIN. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE COMPUTER INDICATED THAT THE AIR FLOW METER AND THE THROTTLE BODY GASKET NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND THEY STATED THAT THEY WILL UPDATE THE FILES ON THE REPAIR AND THE FAILURE THAT OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE WILL BE REPAIRED AT THE OWNERS EXPENSE. THERE ARE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE FAILURE HAS OCCURRED FOR APPROXIMATELY 3 MONTHS AND HAS BECOME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 72000.
I HAVE A 2004 XC90 THAT HAS A FUEL PUMP DAMAGE. THERE IS SOME SORT OF A LEAK WHERE THE GAS ODOR COMES IN THE CABIN. I BROUGHT IT OUT TO THE DEALER AND IT WOULD COST ME CLOSE TO A $1000 TO FIX IT. I'VE HEARD OF PEOPLE WITH SIMILAR PROBLEM AND I BELIEVE IT TO BE BIGGER PROBLEM THAN WHAT VOLVO SAID TO ME. THEY SAID IT WAS WEAR AND TEAR BUT I HAVE FRIENDS THAT DRIVE DIFFERENT CARS AND I'VE NEVER HEARD OF FUEL PUMP PROBLEM. CAN YOU LET ME KNOW IF THIS IS AN ISOLATED PROBLEM OR A COMPANY-WIDE ISSUE? I WAS WONDERING IF THERE HAS BEEN A RECALL FOR 2004 XC-90'S BECAUSE OF THERE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ELECTRICAL FAILURE. THIS PAST WEEKEND AFTER ABOUT 3 HOURS OF HIGHWAY DRIVING THE WHOLE DASHBOARD AND NAVIGATION FLICKERED AND RESTARTED. IT DID THEY 3 OR 4 TIMES UNTIL IT DID A SIMILAR THING WHERE THE ENTIRE DASHBOARD AND NAVIGATION SHUT DOWN. THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND IT TOLD ME THERE WAS BREAK FAILURE AND TO PULL OVER SLOWLY. I HAD NO BLINKERS OR HAZARD LIGHTS AND THE HEADLIGHTS EVEN WENT OFF. THIS IS EXTREMELY HAZARDOUS. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED THE CAR OFF. TURNING IT BACK ON IT DROVE OK FOR A FEW MINUTES UNTIL IT FLICKERED AGAIN. I FINALLY MADE IT TO MY DESTINATION AND TOOK IT TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP WHO COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT. THEY CHARGED $160 TO TRY AND "FIGURE IT OUT" BUT THEY JUST ENDED UP UPGRADING THE SOFTWARE. ON MY TRIP BACK DOWN TO NYC, THE SAME THING BEGAN HAPPENING AFTER ABOUT 3 HOURS OF DRIVING. IT FLICKERED A FEW TIMES AND AGAIN WENT COMPLETELY DARK TELLING ME TO PULL OVER ON THE FREEWAY. AFTER PULLING OVER THE AIRBAG MESSAGE COMES ON. I HAVE READ VARIOUS PLACES ONLINE OF THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE SO THIS IS NOT A RARE CONDITION. THIS SEEMS LIKE A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHICH VOLVO SHOULD REALLY TAKE CARE OF. ASKING CUSTOMERS TO PAY $1200 TO REPLACE A CEM WHEN IT REALLY SHOULD BE A RECALL IS A LITTLE RIDICULOUS. *TR
MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 HAS A FUEL LEAK COMING FROM SOMEWHERE IN THE REGION OF THE FUEL PUMP, HOSE OR GAS TANK. I AM TOLD BY THE VOLVO MECHANIC THAT THEY ARE SEEING ALOT OF FUEL PUMP AND FITTING FAILURES. I AM ALSO SEEING ONLINE REPORTS OF OTHER OWNERS WITH SAME PROBLEM. AND I SEE THAT THE FUEL PUMP AND FITTINGS ARE THE SAME OR SIMILAR THAT HAVE BEEN RECALLED ON OTHER VOLVO MODELS AND OTHER MODEL YEARS. I SEE YOU HAVE AN ACTIVE INVESTIGATION INTO THIS PROBLEM. RADIO TURNS ON AND OFF SPONTANEOUSLY ESPECIALLY WHEN HEATED SEATS ARE TUNED ON. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL OUTSIDE OF THE PARKED VEHICLE AND INSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING. THE FAILURE OCCURRENCE WAS INTERMITTENT AND HAS PROGRESSED. AN AUTHORIZED DEALER STATED THAT THE FAILURE WAS CONTRIBUTED TO A CRACKED FUEL PUMP HOUSING. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT SMELLED FUEL IN THE VEHICLE AND OBSERVED THAT THERE WAS A LEAK IN THE FUEL TANK. THE MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT THE FUEL PUMP GASKET CAUSED THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED HER TO CONTACT THE DEALER AND OFFERED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR MINUS THE SERVICE CHARGE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 78,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 75,000.
I OWN A 2004 VOLVO XC90 SUV. IN SEPTEMBER 2009 , DURING AN OUT OF TOWN TRIP, THE TRANSMISSION EMERGENCY INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON READING "URGENT TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED". THE VOLVO WAS TAKEN TO A VOLVO DEALER IN MA. AND THE SOFTWARE WAS REPROGRAMMED AND THE VEHICLE CHECKED. THE LIGHT WENT OUT AND I DROVE HOME TO IN. ON JAN. 11, 2010, THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN AND MY VOLVO WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER CHECKED AND SOFTWARE REPROGRAMMED. IN ADDITION, THE VOLVO WAS SLOW TO EXCELLERATE AND A NOISE WAS EVIDENT IN THE REAR END OF THE VEHICLE, ON JAN. 13, 2010, THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT CAME ON A THIRD TIME AND THE VOLVO IS NOW PARKED AT THE DEALER AWAITING A NEW TRANSMISSION. I THOUGHT A TRANSMISSION IS SUPPOSSED TO LAST FOR TEN YEARS. IS THIS NOT TRUE? THEY WILL GIVE ME A NEW TRANSMISSION WITH ONLY A ONE YEAR GUARANTEE. IS THIS FAIR? OUR 2004 VOLVO XC90 ALWAYS HAD AN ERRATIC ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. LAST YEAR IT SUDDENLY GOT WORSE WHEN THE ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, INCLUDING BRAKE LIGHTS, TURN SIGNALS AND GAUGES STARTED TO FAIL AND WITHIN A FEW DAYS WERE COMPLETELY NON-FUNCTIONING. LAST COUPLE OF DAYS I NOTICED STRONG GAS SMELLS IN THE GARAGE. DROVE THE CAR A SHORT DISTANCE AND PARKED IT BACK IN THE GARAGE. CHECKED A COUPLE MINUTES LATER AND THE GARAGE REEKED OF GASOLINE. WHEN I CHECKED UNDERNEATH I FOUND GAS STAINING THE UNDERSIDE OF THE GAS TANK AND DRIPS ON THE FLOOR. *TR

2004 VOLVO XC 90 FUEL PUMP LEAK. STRONG ODOR EMITS FROM VEHICLE. SPOKE WITH VOLVO NA HQ, HAS NO DOCUMENTS ON THIS. HOWEVER, OTHER GOV AND VEHICLE REPORTING AGENCIES HAVE DOCUMENTS SUPPORTING EVIDENCE OF COMPLAINTS ON SAME VEHICLE. AT THIS TIME NO RECALL ISSUED. OCCASIONAL POWER FAILURE, LIKELY DUE TO HEAT. A PROBLEM WITH THE CEM DUE TO HEAT SOAK ON A LONG DRIVE - 2004 VOLVO XC 90 HAS A SPLIT-SECOND SEVERE "THUMP" IN THE FRONT END DUE TO THE POWER LOSS, WHICH IS THEN FOLLOWED BY A VERY BRIEF (SPLIT SECOND) INTERNAL (MEANING DASHBOARD LIGHTS, HI-FI, DOME LIGHTS, ETC) POWER FAILURE. POWER THEN RETURNS AND THE CAR CONTINUES TO DRIVE - HOWEVER, THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE WHEN DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. I HAVE DISCUSSED AT LENGTH WITH BOTH THE DEALER AND VOLVO NA AND NEITHER WILL ADMIT THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE CEM DESIGN. AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, IT IS SUSCEPTIBLE TO HEAT FAILURE - HOWEVER, EVEN PAYING $1,000+ TO HAVE IT REPLACED DOES NOT SEEM TO GUARANTEE ANY IMPROVEMENT AS THE PART DESIGN HAS NOT CHANGED SINCE 2003. AFTER ALMOST 6 MONTHS OF NOT USING MY VEHICLE AND AFTER TAKING IT TO GET ITS MANDATORY MAINTENANCE, ALL OF A SUDDEN I WAS SMELLING GAS FUMES IN MY GARAGE. NOW I HAVE TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP AND PAY MORE THAN $1100. IT IS HEALTH HAZARDOUS AND DANGER SITUATION AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT VOLVO HASN'T RECALLED THIS PART AFTER SO MANY COMPLAINTS. 2004 VOLVO XC90 2.5L TRANSMISSION. COMPLETE FAILURE AT 65,000 MILES REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. FOUR DAYS AFTER REPAIR, VEHICLE HAS LOUD ENGINE THUMP AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES BACK ON. REPEATS THUMP WITH ENTIRE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM GOING OUT REQUIRING A 3.5 HOUR TOW HOME FROM 1/2 TO OUR VACATION DESTINATION. DEALER REPLACED ALTERNATOR. HAD FOR 2 DAYS AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES BACK ON AND THE THUMP/ELECTRICAL ISSUES START AGAIN. BARELY GOT TO DEALER WHO HAS HAD FOR A WEEK. THEY REPLACED ALTERNATOR AS PUT IN THE WRONG ONE, BUT STILL HAVEN'T FIXED IT YET. *TR
WE PURCHASED A 2004 VOLVO XV 90 IN AUGUST 2006. LAST MONTH, JULY OF 2009, MY SEVEN YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER REACHED FOR HER SEAT BELT IN THIRD ROW OF THE VEHICLE AND ANNOUNCED IT WAS BROKEN. NOTHING UNUSUAL HAPPENED TO THE VEHICLE TO CAUSE THIS. OUR MECHANIC, HABEGGAR AUTO IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN, INFORMED US THIS SEAT BELT WAS A RECALLED ITEM AND ADVISED I CONTACT VOLVO IMMEDIATELY TO HAVE IT FIXED. THE MECHANIC ALSO TOLD ME THE INFORMATION HE GOT FROM ALLDATE ONLINE INDICATED THAT SEAT BELT WAS ALREADY FIXED BUT FAILED AGAIN. WHEN I CALLED VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE AT 1-800-458-1552 I WAS TOLD I NEEDED TO GO TO A CERTIFIED VOLVO DEALER. I THEN TOOK IT TO JENKINS VOLVO IN MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN. THEY VERIFIED THE FACT THAT IT WAS A RECALLED ITEM. BUT WHEN THEY CONTACTED VOLVO THEY WERE TOLD VOLVO WOULD NOT COVER THE REPAIR ($171) OR THE INSPECTION OF THE OTHER SEAT BELTS THAT WERE ALSO RECALLED. I HAVE EMAILED VOLVO CUSTOMER CARE ASKING THEM TO PLEASE RECONSIDER. THIS IS A TERRIBLE SITUATION. CHILDREN ARE AT RISK BECAUSE AN ADULT WOULD RARELY SIT IN THE THIRD ROW. WE PURCHASED A VOLVO FOR ITS SAFETY FEATURES AND THEY WON'T EVEN PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKE? ALTHOUGH THE DOLLAR AMOUNT TO FIX THE ONE SEAT BELT ISN'T HUGE, I DON'T TRUST THE OTHER SEAT BELTS. THE RECALL WAS ON THE SEAT BELTS IN SECOND AND THIRD ROW. I WANT THEM INSPECTED. WE HAVE A SEVEN YEAR-OLD AND FOUR YEAR-OLD AND OFTEN TRANSPORT THEIR FRIENDS. I WILL NOT PUT THEM AT RISK. *TR
1. SINCE DAY 1, THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2004 VOLVO-XC90 HAS ALWAYS GIVEN ME TROUBLE, IT DOESN'T ENGAGE TROUGH GEAR AS QUICKLY AS IT SHOULD. ON MAY 25TH 2009, THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY WENT OUT LEAVING ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION WITH CARS BEHIND ME TRAVELING 35 MILES AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. 2. THE TRANSMISSION HAS NEVER OPERATED PROPERLY SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IN APRIL OF 2009. THE SHOP AND EVERY OTHER ONE I CALLED KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THEY SAID THAT THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS MODEL AND YEAR WAS A FAULTY GM TRANSMISSION AND HAVE SEEN MANY IN FOR THIS TYPE OF SERVICE. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT MANY OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, THE EXACT PROBLEM. I BOUGHT IT FROM AUTOWEST ACURA IN SAN JOSE, I ASK THEM FOR HELP WITH THAT MATTER, (4 TIMES) THEY WERE EVASIVE AND REFUSED TO HELP, OR TO GET TO ANY ARRANGEMENT. THE "TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT" LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID I NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION. THERE SEEMS TO BE A LARGE NUMBER OF THESE SAME COMPLAINTS FOR THIS SAME CAR FROM VOLVO. THERE IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND I'M WRITING YOU FOR CONSUMER PROTECTION. *TR
I'VE BEEN GETTING A ROARING SOUND FROM UNDER MY '04 VOLVO XC90 T6. AFTER SPENDING $3000 REPLACING AN "ANGLE ARM" AT THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP, THERE'S BEEN NO IMPROVEMENT. I'M NOW TOLD I NEED TO REPLACE MY TRANSMISSION. COST ESTIMATE IS $7000. *TR
DISCOLORING OF HOOD NOTICE THE HOOD PAINT IS CRACKING AND PEELING. TAKEN IT TO AND BODY SHOP AND IT WAS A VOLVO SPECIAL STATED THE CAR WAS HOOD WAS REPAINTED BEFORE PURCHASE NOW ITS PEELING AND DISCOLORING WHICH IT WILL SPREAD. *TR
WHEN WORKING ON THE AUDIO/CD/RADIO OF THE CAR, THIS GENERATES AN SRS SERVICE URGENT MESSAGE TO BE DISPLAYED ON THE DASH. THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH VOLVOS IF YOU CHECK THE MESSAGE BOARDS. PEOPLE SHOULD BE ABLE TO WORK/CHANGE OUT THEIR STEREOS WITHOUT THE FEAR OF THE AIRBAGS WORKING AFTER WORDS. *TR
WHILE DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON APRIL 25, 2009, MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 BEGAN JERKING AND THEN THERE WAS A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL SWOOPED TO THE FAR RIGHT AND THEN BACK TO LEFT WITH NO OTHER MOVEMENT, THE RADIO SHUT OFF, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS BEGAN WIPING, AND THE DOOR LOCKS AND WINDOWS WOULD NOT WORK. I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY IN HOPES OF RESETTING THE COMPUTER. ONCE THIS WAS DONE THE CAR STARTED AGAIN. MESSAGES ARE STILL DISPLAYED. WE CONTACTED VOLVO CORPORATE AND HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A LOCAL DEALERSHIP TOMORROW. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND IT IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE SUBMITTED A COMPLAINT FOR THIS SAME TYPE PROBLEM. FAILURE OF TRANSMISSION IN A 2004 VOLVO XC 90 WITH 64,000 MILES WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. ENTIRE TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. *TR
1. THE TRANSMISSION ON MY 2004 VOLVO-XC90 HAS ALWAYS GIVEN ME TROUBLE, IT DOESN'T ENGAGE INTO THIRD GEAR AS QUICKLY AS IT SHOULD. ON APRIL 17TH 2009, THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETELY WENT OUT LEAVING ME IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION WITH CARS BEHIND ME TRAVELING 35 MILES AND ALMOST CAUSED AN ACCIDENT. 2. THE TRANSMISSION HAS NEVER OPERATED PROPERLY SINCE I PURCHASED THE CAR IN JUNE OF 2008. 3. I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND SO THE CAR IS IN THE SHOP NOW FOR REPAIR. THE SHOP AND EVERY OTHER ONE I CALLED KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS. THEY SAID THAT THE TRANSMISSION IN THIS MODEL AND YEAR WAS A FAULTY GM TRANSMISSION AND HAVE SEEN MANY IN FOR THIS TYPE OF SERVICE. I DID SOME RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT MANY OWNER HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM, THE EXACT PROBLEM. MY CAR ONLY HAS 54,000 MILES ON IT AND SOME OF THE COMPLAINTS I FOUND ON THE INTERNET REPORTED WERE AS LOW AS 20,000 MILES. MY VOLVO XC90 2004, DRIVER'S SIDE GETS FLOODED DURING HEAVY RAIN. DURING LIGHT RAIN, THE INTERIOR WILL GET DAMP. WHEN I START THE CAR, I HEAR A WATER SLUSHING SOUND, COMING SOMEWHERE FROM THE CAR. MY MECHANIC SAID THIS IS DUE TO A VOLVO DESIGN FLAW. THE SUNROOF DRAINS ARE NARROW, AND IT GETS CLOGGED AND REDIRECTS THE WATER INSIDE THE PANELS OF THE CAR. ALSO THE WINDSHIELD DRAINS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM. I CANNOT BELIEVE A LUXURY CAR CAN HAVE SUCH A MAJOR FLAW. I NEED THE FLAW FIXED, SINCE IT IS THE MANUFACTURER'S FAULT. ON MARCH 22, 2009 I WAS TRAVELING WITH MY TWO DAUGHTERS EAST ON I-75 FROM NAPLES TO MIAMI WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY JERKED AND THE DASHBOARD AND INSTRUMENTS FLICKERED AND LIT UP, AND THEN THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DISPLAYED THE MESSAGE "SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT". WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING TO LOOK FOR A REST AREA AS THAT STRETCH OF I-75 IS IN THE EVERGLADES. AFTER A FEW MILES THE CAR JERKED AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME ALL THE DASHBOARD LIGHTS, INSTRUMENTS (SPEEDOMETER, RPM), RADIO AND INTERIOR LIGHTS DID NOT WORK. WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING TO A REST AREA ABOUT 7 MILES DOWN THE HIGHWAY. I STOPPED, TURNED OFF THE CAR FOR 15 MINUTES THEN IT STARTED UP AGAIN WITH ALL THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS WORKING, BUT STILL DISPLAYING THE MESSAGE "SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT". NOT WANTING TO B STUCK IN THE EVERGLADES I CONTINUED DRIVING, AND THE JERKING MOTION AND ISSUE WITH ELECTRICAL OCCURRED AGAIN TWO MORE TIMES. THE LAST TIME WAS WHEN I WAS PULLING OFF THE HIGHWAY ONTO MY EXIT FOR HOME IT DISPLAYED THE MESSAGE "BRAKE FAILURE! STOP SAFELY". I WAS ABLE TO STOP, TURNED OFF CAR, STARTED IT AGAIN WITH EVERYTHING WORKING, BUT STILL DISPLAYING THE MESSAGE "SRS - AIRBAG SERVICE URGENT". THIS SAME ISSUE HAPPENED LAST SUMMER WHEN MY WIFE WAS DRIVING WITH OUR KIDS FROM MIAMI TO JACKSONVILLE. SHE TOOK IT TO A VOLVO DEALER IN DAYTONA BEACH AND ONE IN JACKSONVILLE. BOTH DEALERS WERE NOT ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE ISSUE. WHEN BACK IN MIAMI, I TOOK IT TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO IS VOLVO-CERTIFIED AND HE WAS NOT ABLE TO FIX THE ISSUE EITHER. BASED ON WHAT I'VE RESEARCHED IT SEEMS TO BE AN ISSUE WITH THE ONBOARD COMPUTER. WITH EACH SERVICE AT POINT WEST VOLVO NOW PARK PLACE VOLVO SINCE PURCHASING THE CAR, DALLAS TX, I REPORTED A PROBLEM WITH MY 2004 XC90 T6 THAT MY ENGINE SURGES ON TAKEOFF. WITH EACH SERVICE, THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND DID NOT LIST THIS ON THE INVOICE. WELL, SINCE THEY DID NOT FIND A PROBLEM, I DID NOT QUESTION WHY IT WAS NOT LISTED. TWO DAYS AGO THE 'TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT" LIGHT CAME ON, SO I CALLED THE DEALER TO SEE IF THE CAR IS SAFE TO DRIVE IN FOR SERVICE. ASSURED THAT IT MAY JUST BE A COMMUTER PROBLEM, I DELIVER THE CAR. I AM NOW AT 72000 MILES AND DID NOT PURCHASE EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE DEALER HAS COMPLETED A SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD ($600.00) AND THINKS THIS MAY FIX THE PROBLEM. IF NOT, I WILL NEED A NEW TRANSMISSION TO THE TUNE OF $6,000.00. I HAVE NOT MISSED A SERVICE, EVEN SCHEDULED SERVICE EARLY BECAUSE OF THE CONTINUED PROBLEM WITH THE SURGES. I EVEN HAVE A NEIGHBOR WHO HAD TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ON HIS 2004 XC90. HAVE ALWAYS HAD VOLVOS, BUT THIS IS THE LAST ONE. VOLVO NO LONGER STANDS BEHIND ITS VEHICLES. SHOP INDICATED THERE IS NO ADJUSTABLE PART. TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT WOULD LIKELY BE NEEDED, WHEN CONTACTED VOLVO INDICATED THE WARRANTY WAS OFF AT 55K MILES. UPON RESEARCHING THROUGH THE INTERNET THERE ARE AN EXTREMELY LARGE NUMBER OF TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENTS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND YET NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. I CONTACTED VOLVO OF NORTH AMERICA AND IT APPEARS THEY ARE DEALING WITH THIS ON A SQUEAKY WHEEL CASE BY CASE BASIS AND SOME INDIVIDUALS ARE PAYING FULL REPLACEMENT COST WHILE OTHERS ARE BEING COVERED BY VOLVO. THIS DOES NOT SEEM EQUITABLE TO THE INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE UNABLE TO DO THE RESEARCH OR HAVE TIME AND RESOURCES TO CONVINCE VOLVO TO REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSIONS GRATIS. *TR

ON JANUARY 6, 2009, MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER WERE DRIVING ON I-20 WHEN THEY HEARD A "THUMP" AND THEN EXPERIENCED A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER WITH THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS. I HAVE 2004 VOLVO XC90 2.5T. AT APPROXIMATELY 60,000 MILES, TWO OF THE WHEEL BEARINGS (1 FRONT, 1 REAR) MALFUNCTIONED. THE FRONT WAS SO LOOSE, THE WHEEL ALMOST FELL OFF AT HIGH SPEED. I HAD TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A MECHANIC. AT APPROXIMATELY 100,000 MILES, THE OTHER FRONT WHEEL BEARING MALFUNCTIONED. ONCE AGAIN, THE WHEEL ALMOST FELL OFF AT HIGH SPEED. NOW AT 123,000 MILES, THE OTHER REAR WHEEL BEARING HAS MALFUNCTIONED. I AM A SAFE DRIVING MOTHER OF TWO. THE VEHICLE IS NEVER DRIVEN OFF ROAD. FUEL PUMP LEAKING CAUSING INTERNAL GAS FUMES WITH PASSENGER HAZARD AND VISIBLE LEAKING OF GASOLINE ONTO ROAD FROM THE PUMP-GAS TANK ASSEMBLY. THE FUEL PUMP WAS ON A WARRANTY FROM STATE OF CALIFORNIA. HOWEVER WHEN DEALER REPLACED FUEL PUMP KIT THE PUMP-ASSEMBLY CONTINUES TO LEAK. CAR IS A 2004 XC-90 VOLVO WITH 60K MILES. *TR

TRANSMISSION REPLACED TWO TIMES, AT APPROX. 38,000 AND AT ABOUT 48,000 MILES. UNITS START SLIPPING WHEN SHIFTING TO SECOND GEAR AND LEAVE YOU RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE UNTIL THEY DECIDE TO RENGAGE. BALL JOINTS AND ALL FOUR HUBS REPLACED BY 50,000 MILES. AXLES (FRONT) NEED REPLACING NOW AT 70,000 MILES. SWAY BAR ENDS REPLACED AT 55,000 MILES. THIS IS THE NEEDIEST VEHICLE I HAVE EVER OWNED. FRONT BEARINGS ON DRIVE SHAFT REPLACED LAST MONTH, WORN SINCE ABUT FIFTEEN THOUSAND MILES, FINALLY GOT SO LOUD THAT WE COULD SHAKE THE DRIVE SHAFT AND GET A QUARTER OF PLAY AT THE BEARING SET. *TR
I HAVE A FIVE YEAR OLD 2004 VOLVO XC90 T6 THAT HAS HAD TWO TRANSMISSION FAILURES. IT IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER AWAITING A THIRD TRANSMISSION. THE FIRST TRANSMISSION FAILURE WAS IN AUGUST 2007, THE SECOND WAS IN DECEMBER 2008. I WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE FIRST TRANSMISSION FAILED DUE TO "EXCESS METAL" AND THAT THE METAL SOMEHOW TRAVELED TO THE COOLING SYSTEM AND THEN TO THE SECOND TRANSMISSION, WHICH CAUSED IT TO FAIL. THIS IS A DANGEROUS ISSUE AND I FEAR THAT THE CAR IS NEITHER SAFE NOR RELIABLE AT THIS POINT. I PAID $1900 FOR THE FIRST TRANSMISSION TO BE REPLACED. ONE WEEK LATER, I RETURNED TO THE DEALER AND COMPLAINED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS HESITATING AND WAS NOT SHIFTING SMOOTHLY. THEY COULD FIND NOTHING. I RETURNED FOUR ADDITIONAL TIMES OVER THE NEXT YEAR WITH THE SAME COMPLAINTS AND THE DEALERSHIP COULD NEVER FIND ANYTHING WRONG. NOW I AM WAITING TO FIND OUT IF VOLVO WILL EVEN OFFER TO PAY FOR THIS THIRD TRANSMISSION. *TR
