I HAVE HAD 3 COMPLETE TRANSMISSION FAILURES IN A VOLVO XC90 T6 WITHOUT WARNING REQUIRING REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE FIRST TWO FAILED ON THE HIGHWAY ALMOST CAUSING AN ACCIDENT AS THE TRANSMISSION CUT OUT COMPLETELY. THE LAST ONCE OCCURRED ON A BUSY 2 LANE HIGHWAY WHILE MAKING A TURN ACROSS TRAFFIC. THE FIRST ONE FAILED AT 28,000 MILES, THE SECOND AT 55,000 MILES AND THE THIRD AT 80,000 MILES. THE FIRST ONE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WITHOUT AN ARGUMENT, THE 2ND ONE WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY WITH AN ARGUMENT, AND THE THIRD ONE VOLVO WON'T EVEN TALK ABOUT REPLACING FOR FREE AND WANTS TO CHARGE OVER 5K, WITHOUT GIVING ANY ASSURANCES ANOTHER 25K WON'T GO BY AND IT WON'T FAIL AGAIN. THEY DON'T CARE THAT THE "SAFEST" CAR CAN INSTANTLY BECOME A DEATH TRAP. A TRANSMISSION ISN'T A DISPOSABLE ITEM THAT SHOULD FAIL EVERY 25K, THEY SHOULD LAST AT LEAST 100K AND NOT CUT OUT IN THESE DANGEROUS FASHIONS WITHOUT WARNING. THE THIRD ONE THERE WEREN'T EVEN ANY WARNING LIGHTS. THE COMPANY SHOULD FIX THIS DANGEROUS PROBLEM AT NO COST TO THE OWNERS WITH A SOLUTION THAT GIVES THE TRANSMISSION A LIFE SIMILAR TO OTHER VEHICLES IN IT'S CLASS. THERE ANSWER IS TO PUT ANOTHER ONE IN, KNOWING IT WILL FAIL AND MAYBE KILL YOU. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 VOLVO XC90 T6 AWD SUV THAT I PURCHASED FROM A VOLVO DEALER. WHILE ON A CROSS COUNTRY TRIP THE TRANSMISSION SEIZED AND HAD TO BE REPLACE. THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY (LUCKY), BUT THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT THIS MODEL AND YEAR HAD A ENGINEERING FLAW AND HE HAD SEEN A NUMBER OF THESE WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM. THE FLAW, THE TURBO ENGINE PUTS TOO MUCH TORQUE ON THE 4 SPEED GM TRANNY IN THE CAR. I ASKED IF VOLVO HAD A RECALL ON THIS ISSUE AND HE SAID NO. THIS FIRST TRANNY WENT OUT AT 60,000. AT 66, 000 MILES THE SECOND TRANNY WENT OUT. WHEN I ASKED WHY THIS ONE WENT OUT, HE EXPLAINED THAT THEY DO NOT KNOW B/C WHEN IT IS UNDER WARRANTY, VOLVO TELLS THE DEALERSHIPS TO JUST REPLACE IT AND THEN SEND IT TO THEM AND THEY WILL TRY AND DIAGNOSIS THE PROBLEM. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT SINCE GM DOES NOT MAKE THE TRANSMISSION ANY LONGER THEY HAVE TO PUT A REBUILT INTO IT. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE AND THERE SEEMS TO BE 100'S OF XC 90 OWNERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE CONTACTED VOLVO CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY HAVE BEEN NICE BUT NOT VERY WILLING TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE AND I DON'T HAVE VERY MUCH CONFIDENCE IN THIS RECENT TRANNY. I WAS LUCKY WHEN THE FIRST ONE WENT OUT, B/C I WAS NOT DRIVE AT 70 MPH WHEN IT SEIZED, I WAS JUST GETTING BACK ON THE HWY. THE SECOND ONE WENT OUT ALSO AT A SLOW SPEED. I SEARCHED THROUGH YOUR SITE AND DID NOT FIND ANY MENTION OF THIS ISSUE SO I THOUGHT I WOULD POST WITH YOU AND SEE WHAT HAPPENED. IF YOU NEED FURTHER DETAILS PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANKS *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 20 MPH, THE PASSENGER SIDE TIRE DETACHED FROM THE AXLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE AXLE AND BALL JOINT FAILED. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 67,000.

MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 TRANSMISSION HAD TO REPLACED AND THEY HAD TO TOW THE CAR TWICE BECAUSE THE FIRST TIME THEY TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED . MY LITTLE CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR THAT JUST ABOUT MADE IT HOME. *TR
RECALL 2004 VOLVO XC90 FUEL PUMP *BF THE CONSUMER STATED SHE EXPERIENCED THE PROBLEM BACK IN OCTOBER 2008. THERE WAS A HORRIBLE GAS SMELL COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM THE FIRST TIME. THE CONSUMER IS SEEKING REIMBURSEMENT. *JB
MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 T6 TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE IN JANUARY 2007, WITH NO EXTENDED WARRANTY. I HAVE ABOUT 67K MILES ON IT AND BOUGHT IT WITH 38K. THE DEALERSHIP IS CHARGING ME $4,200 TO REPLACE IT. I HAVE BEEN READING MANY COMPLAINTS FROM PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME COMPLAINT. I FEEL THAT THIS TRANSMISSION IS A LEMON AND SHOULD BE RECALLED. *TR
ON 10/21/2008 I WAS DRIVING MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 ON THE HIGHWAY RT.93. IT WAS RAINING AND THE INTERIOR OF THE CAR WAS FOGGY. I COULD NOT SEE OUTSIDE SO I TURNED ON THE A/C BUT IT WAS NOT FUNCTIONING. ALSO, THE CD PLAYER WAS NOT WORKED. I BOUGHT MY CAR NEW IN 2004 WITH HAS ONLY 32,014 MILES ON THE CAR NOW. THE BOSTON VOLVO VILLAGE DEALER INSPECTED THE CAR AND SAID THE BLOWER MOTOR, RESISTOR AND THE CD PLAYER NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE COST OF PARTS AND LABOR OF THE BLOWER AND RESISTOR WAS $1,650 AND THE CD $700. I CONTACTED THE VOLVO HEAD OFFICE AND THEY WERE WILLING TO PROVIDE THE PARTS FREE BUT THE LABOR COST ON ME. I HAVE NO CHOICE TO DO IT RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE I HAVE TWO CHILDREN. I NEED THE CAR TO CARRY THEM TO SCHOOL EVERYDAY. IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IF THE VENTILATION AND HEAT IS NOT WORKING. I CANNOT DRIVE THE CAR IF THERE IS NO VENTILATION AND THE CAR IS FOGGY DURING RAINY OR SNOWY DAYS. IF I WAS IN THE HIGHWAY, I HAVE TO PARK ON THE SIDE FOR THE POOR VISIBILITY. IT WOULD PUT ME AND MY FAMILY IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. I PAID $1,058 FOR THE LABOR AND $57.50 FOR THE INSPECTION COST. IF THE VOLVO ADMITTED THE PARTS HAS PROBLEM AND WILLING TO REPLACE THEM FREE, THEY SHOULD NOT CHARGE ME LABOR COST. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 VOLVO XC-90, THE TRANSMISSION WENT OUT ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. THERE WAS NOT WARNING, AND WE ALMOST GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT WITH A TRUCK. MY WIFE IS 8 MONTHS PREGNANT, AND WE WERE VERY SCARED. *TR
ON OCTOBER 18 AT APPROXIMATELY 8PM WE WERE TRAVELING WEST BOUND ON I-4 WHEN WE EXPERIENCED A SEVERE "JERK" OF THE VEHICLE AND THE INTERIOR SEATBELTS LIGHTS LIT UP. WE CONTINUED TO DRIVE AND EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING A FEW MILES LATER. WE DECIDED TO EXIT AND THEN THERE WAS ANOTHER "JERK" OF THE VEHICLE AND WE LOST ALL INTERIOR ELECTRICAL, NO DASH LIGHTS, NO A/C, NO WINDOWS, NOTHING! WE LIMPED TO A PARKING LOT AND CALLED ROAD SIDE ASSISTANCE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE TOWED. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND I HAVE FOUND MULTIPLE INSTANCES OF THE SAME ON YOUR WEBSITE! VOLVO NEEDS TO RECALL THE VEHICLE AND MAKE THE REPAIRS BEFORE SOMEONE IS KILLED! VOLVO CAN'T SEEM TO REPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND THE COMPUTER IN THE CAR DID NOT REGISTER AN EVENT! SEEMS LIKE THE COMPUTER IS THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY WON'T "OWN" UP TO THE FACT THAT IT'S A VOLVO PROBLEM! *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT NOTICED TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR FLUID NEAR HER VEHICLE. SHE EXPERIENCED HARD SHIFTING WHEN CHANGING GEARS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, THE TRANSMISSION LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WOULD NO LONGER "PULL" AND WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER. SHE WAS INFORMED THAT A NEW TRANSMISSION AND RADIATOR WERE NEEDED. SHE ALSO FOUND OUT THAT THE RADIATOR COOLANT CONTAMINATED THE TRANSMISSION. THE REPAIR WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $5,900. THE CONTACT WROTE A LETTER TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, BUT DID NOT RECEIVE A RESPONSE. SHE ALSO SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER'S CUSTOMER SERVICE LINE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY COULD NOT ASSIST BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS OUTSIDE OF THE WARRANTY. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 122,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 100,000.
IT APPEARS MY STORY HAS BEEN WRITTEN HERE BY MANY OTHERS. I OWN A 2004 XC90 T6. LAST SATURDAY MY HUSBAND RETURNED HOME IN OUR XC90 AND TOLD ME HE HAD CAR TROUBLE. THE CAR WAS SLUGGISH AND THE TRANSMISSION SERVICE URGENT LIGHT HAD COME ON. I TOOK IT TO OUR VOLVO CERTIFIED MECHANIC TWO DAYS LATER WHO SAID HE HAD 3 OTHER XC90'S IN DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER FOR THE SAME THING. HIS COURSE OF ACTION WAS TO FLUSH THE TRANNY, REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION FLUID (W/VOLVO SYNTHETIC) AND UPDATE THE SOFTWARE. I WAS TOLD IF THAT DIDN'T REMEDY THE SITUATION A NEW TRANSMISSION WOULD BE NEEDED. AFTER HAVING THIS WORK DONE (COST $350) I DROVE IT HOME. THE NEXT MORNING AS I DROVE UP A MILD INCLINE AT ABOUT 25 MPH THE CAR SEEMED TO BE UNABLE TO SHIFT. WHEN IT FINALLY DID ALL OF THE INDICATOR LIGHTS FOR THE TRANSMISSION WERE BACK ON. THE TRANSMISSION IS SLIPPING. I CALLED THE MECHANIC BACK AND WAS TOLD THAT A NEW VOLVO TRANNY WOULD BE NEEDED AT A COST OF BETWEEN $4500-$5200. UNFORTUNATELY, IT WILL BE THE SAME DEFECTIVE/INADEQUATE TRANNY THAT IS ALREADY USED IN THE 03/04 XC90'S. THIS IS NOT MY FIRST VOLVO. WE HAVE BOUGHT FROM THEM BEFORE AND WERE HAPPY. IT SEEMS THIS IS NOT JUST AN INTERMITTENT ISSUE, IT IS CHRONIC AND VOLVO NEEDS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. THIS PROBLEM SUBSTANTIALLY AFFECTS THE USE AND VALUE OF THIS CAR. I CAN'T SELL IT THE WAY IT IS SO I AM ESSENTIALLY TRAPPED INTO SPENDING THIS ADDITIONAL $5K. THESE CARS ARE EXPENSIVE TO BEGIN WITH AND YOU EXPECT QUALITY, LONGEVITY AND DEPENDABILITY FROM VOLVO, NOT TO BE TOLD THAT AT 51,000 MILES THE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM IS DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING EXAMINED, THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT BOTH FRONT TIE RODS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. PRIOR TO THIS INFORMATION, HE NOTICED THAT THE TIRES ON THE VEHICLE WERE WEARING FASTER THAN EXPECTED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 80,000.
WHILE DRIVING NORTHBOUND ON INTERSTATE 405, MY WIFE HEARD A LOUD "THUMP" FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS NOISE, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN, AND ALL THE DASH LIGHTS AND ASSOCIATED ELECTRONICS SHUT DOWN. *T
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 65 MPH, THERE WAS AN UNUSUALLY LOUD NOISE FOLLOWED BY AN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF ALL PANEL LIGHTS. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MOVE THE VEHICLE FROM THE ROADWAY AND SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. UPON RESTARTING, THE SRS AIR BAG AND CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHTS REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TWICE BUT THE FAILURE WAS UNABLE TO BE DUPLICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 89,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 99,000. A RAIN STORM CAUSED FLOODING INTO MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 DESTROYING THE INTERIOR. THE WATER DAMAGE CAME INTO THE CAR FROM THE SUN ROOF I WAS TOLD BY A VOLVO SERVICE ADVISOR THAT THE DRAIN IN THE SUN ROOF WAS CLOGGED WHICH CAUSED THE INTERIOR FLOOD. THE PROBLEM IS THAT DURING ROUTINE VOLVO MAINTENANCE THIS SO CALLED DRAINED WAS NOT CLEANED. I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT THERE WAS A DRAIN IN THE SUN ROOF . THIS PROBLEM COST $1900.00 AND LOST OF MY CAR FOR FOUR DAYS . I DID NOTHING WRONG AND FEEL THIS IS MANUFACTURE DEFECT I WOULD LIKE TO BE REIMBURSED TO AVOID THE ADDITIONAL COST OF SMALL CLAIMS COST YOUR PROMPT ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *TR
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE OUTER TIE ROD BALL JOINT CAN DEFORM AT HIGH LOADS CAUSING A LOSS OF CLAMPING AND THE NUT MAY LOOSEN, WHICH MAY EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A FRACTURE OF THE OUTER ROD BALL JOINT. THE DRIVER MAY NOTICE THE VEHICLE IS DIFFCULT TO MANEUVER INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. WHEELS: ON CERTAIN SUV'S, THE FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSORS MAY BE DEFECTIVE, CAUSING AN ERRONEOUS SPEED SIGNAL THIS CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT A NUMBER OF VEHICLE FUNCTIONS, INCLUDING BRAKE, ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, AND TORQUE DISTRIBUTION CONTROL WHICH RELY ON THIS SIGNAL FOR PROPER OPERATION. SEAT BELTS: REAR ON CERTAIN SUV'S, THE SEAT BELT ATTACHMENT FOR THE SECOND AND THIRD ROW MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FITTED PROPERLY. IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE SEAT OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: DEALER WILL INSPECT AND REPAIR FREE OF CHARGE. IN MY CASE, THE MANUFACTURER HAS REFUSED TO REPAIR FREE OF CHARGE, THEREFORE, THE VOLVO DEALER WILL NOT REPAIR DEFECTS ON MY SUV.
STEERING-LINKAGES: TIE ROD ASSEMBLY ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE OUTER TIE ROD BALL JOINT CAN DEFORM AT HIGH LOADS CAUSING A LOSS OF THE CLAMPING FORCE AND THE NUT MAY LOOSEN, WHICH MAY EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A FATIGUE FRACTURE OF THE OUTER TIE ROD BALL JOINT. CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: THE DRIVER MAY NOTICE THAT HTE VEHICLE IS DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH. WHEELS: ON CERTAIN SUV'S THE FRONT WHEEL SPEED SENSORS MAY BE DEFECTIVE. CAUSING AN ERRONEOUS WHILL SPEED SIGNAL. CONSEQUENCES OF THE DEFECT: THIS CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT A NUMBER OF VEHICLE FUNCTIONS, INCLUDING BRAKE, ENGINE, TRANSMISSION, AND TORQUE DISTRIBUTION CONTROL WHICH RELY ON THIS SIGNAL FOR PROPER OPERATION. VISIBILTY: WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, IF THE WIPER ARM IS ACTIVATED IN EXTREME WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS AND WITHOUT LIFTING THE WIPER ARMS AND CLEANING THE WINDSHIELD PRIOR TO MOVING, THE WIPER ARM MIGHT SLIP ON ITS DRIVERSHAFT, RESULTING IN AN INABILITY TO MOVE THE WIPER FROM THE PARK POSIIOT FROM THE PARK POSITION. CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: INOPERATIVE WIPERS UNDER INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS COULD CAUSE A CRASH DUE TO IMPAIRED VISIBILITY. SEATS BELTS: REAR ON CERTAIN SUV'S, THE SEAT BELT ATTACHMENT FOR THE SECOND AND THIRD ROW SEATS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN FITTED PROPERLY. CONSEQUENCES OF DEFECT: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THE SEAT OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY RESTRAINED, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY. CORRECTIVE ACTION: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPAIR THE DEFECTS FREE OF CHARGED. IN MY CASE, THE MANUFACTURER HAS DECLINED TO REPAIR THE DEFECTS EVEN WHEN THE DEALER HAS DIAGNOSED MY SUV WITH THE POWER STEERING PROBLEM, PLUS THE DEFECTS ALREADY MENTIONED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING LESS THAN 60 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD DRILLING NOISE WHENEVER SHE RELEASED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $3,400. THE RADIATOR ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE COST OF $2,100. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE LESS THAN 74,000.
OUR COMPANY OWNS 3 - 2004 VOLVO XC90 VEHICLES. ALL THREE HAVE REQUIRED TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENTS AT LOW MILEAGES (77,000, 90,000 AND 106,000 MILES). WE BELIEVE THIS IS AN EXTRAORDINARILY LOW MILEAGE FOR A VEHICLE TO HAVE TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHEN IT IS A $50,000 VEHICLE NEW. AFTER DOING MUCH RESEARCH, THIS SEEMS TO BE A CHRONIC PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AS EVIDENCED BY THE FACT THAT THEY CANNOT GET A TRANSMISSION FOR THIS IN THE US AT THIS TIME AND THE MANY CONSUMER COMPLAINTS ABOUT THESE VEHICLES. WE BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE REVIEWED BY THE GOVERNMENT DUE TO THE HIGH RATE OF FAILURE AT MILEAGES LOWER THAN ACCEPTABLE FOR TRANSMISSION FAILURES. ALL THREE OF OUR VEHICLES ARE DRIVEN FOR WORK PURPOSES ONLY, MOSTLY HIGHWAY MILES AND DO NOT PULL TRAILERS OR ARE ABUSED IN ANY OTHER WAY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2004 VOLVO XC-90 AT NIGHT I EXPERIENCED A MOMENTARY LOSS OF CONTROL, FOLLOWED BY THE HEADLIGHTS PAUSING AND THEN GOING FROM HIGH BEAMS TO LOW. THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER LOST SOME OF IT'S DISPLAYS AND THE DOOR LOCKS BECAME INOPERATIVE. THE DATA DISPLAY WARNED ME OF AN "URGENT SRS FAILURE". I WAS AT LOW SPEED A BLOCK FROM HOME SO I CREPT HOME AND THE NEXT DAY SENT THE CAR TO TRIAD VOLVO BY ROLL-BACK WRECKER. PROBLEM WAS FAILURE OF CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE. (ONE OF FEW "BRAINS" OF THE VEHICLE FAILED) NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND OF COURSE WE DID. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT C.E.M FAILURES ARE AN COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE. TWO DEALERSHIPS HAVE TOLD ME THAT THEY HAVE DEALT WITH THIS ISSUE RECENTLY. THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE. OUR LIVES WERE AT RISK GIVEN OUR CIRCUMSTANCE. I CANNOT IMAGINE WHAT OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED. I HAVE A 2004 VOLVO XC90 WITH 65,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. WE RECENTLY NOTICED NOISE WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE. WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND THEY SAID THAT BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS ARE GOING BAD FOR ONE TO GO BAD IS ONE THING, FOR BOTH HIGHLY UNLIKELY. FORTUNATELY, WE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIR. IF THE REAR WHEELS WOULD HAVE LOCKUP UP, IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT. I SPOKE TO OTHER MECHANICS AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT IT IS HIGHLY UNLIKELY THAT BOTH WOULD GO BAD AND THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE PARTS. MY 2004 VOLVO T6 AWD TRANSMISSION HAD BEEN SLIPPING SLIGHTLY SHIFTING FROM 2ND TO 3RD GEAR, BUT THERE WAS NO WARNING OR SERVICE LIGHT. I WAS DRIVING UP A HILL IN VICTOR N.Y. I FOUND THIS ISSUE SURPRISING SINCE, ALTHOUGH THIS VEHICLE HAS SIGNIFICANT MILEAGE FOR ITS AGE, >90% OF THAT MILEAGE CAN BE ATTRIBUTED TO HIGHWAY DRIVING (COMMUTE >80 MILES PER DAY). AFTER RESEARCHING, I FOUND THIS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS PARTICULAR MODEL CAR, AS WELL AS THE 2003 AND PART OF THE 2005 YEAR. I HAD THE TRANSMISSION REBUILT BY AN INDEPENDENT TRANSMISSION REPAIR SHOP, THEY WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE ME ATRA MANUALS, WHICH I HAVE COPIES OF, THAT SHOWS THE PARTICULAR DEFECT WITH THE TRANSMISSION WHICH DEMONSTRATES AS THE DIRECT CAUSE OF WHAT SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM. THAT PROBLEM IS THAT THE 2ND AND 4TH CLUTCHES ARE BURNING AND EVENTUALLY SPEWING BITS OF METAL SHAVINGS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION, DESTROYING IT. THE PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED IN THE 2005 ATRA MANUAL AS SOMETHING TO LOOK OUT FOR AND INSPECT, IN 2006, THE CAUSE WAS IDENTIFIED AS IMPROPER MACHINING OF THE ACCUMULATOR HOUSING, THE ANGLE AND DEPTH HAVE NOW BEEN MODIFIED TO AVOID DAMAGE LIKE MY CAR AND MANY OTHERS OWNERS LIKE ME HAVE EXPERIENCED. THE PARTICULAR MODEL IS THE GM 4T65E TRANSMISSION. FORTUNATELY I WAS IN THE RIGHT LANE SO I GOT OFF AT THE NEXT EXIT AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT HOME, BUT IT CONTINUED TO HAVE INTERMITTENT POWER LOSS THE WHOLE TIME. I'M IN NIGHTTIME TRAFFIC PUTTING ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS TRYING TO GET HOME. I HAVE TO WAIT TILL MONDAY TO GO BACK TO THE DEALER, THE TRANSMISSION SERVICE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE SATURDAY. THE DEALERSHIP GETS THE VEHICLE MONDAY, AND KEEPS IT UNTIL FRIDAY SAYING THE CEM MODULE HAD TO BE REPLACED. I WASN'T CONFIDENT OF THE FIX SO THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE REP KEPT THE CAR TO DRIVE OVER THE WEEKEND. I PICKED IT UP MONDAY, MAY 5TH. THE INVOICE SAYS 'CODE TCM 002B INCORRECT GEAR RATIO' WAS THE ERROR MESSAGE FOUND. THE SOFTWARE FOR THE TCM WAS UPGRADED, BUT APPARENTLY DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THE CEM WAS REPLACED. THIS VEHICLE HAD 53,897 MILES ON IT WHEN HIS OCCURRED. I HAVE NOT OWNED THE CAR 4 YEARS YET AND WISH I HAD GOTTEN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY BECAUSE THIS RECENT WORK WAS NOT COVERED AND COST $1297. FROM WHAT I'VE LEARNED ON THE INTERNET IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS THIS T6 XC90 HAS TRANSMISSION FAILURE AS ITS THEME. I FIND IT INCREDULOUS THAT VOLVO MAY BE PUTTING ME AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC AT RISK FOR A PROBLEM THAT COULD RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT. *TR
I WAS DRIVING BACK FROM THE STORE AND THE TRANSMISSION STARTED TO SLIP. I TURNED AROUND TO MOVE THE CAR FROM MY PARKING GARAGE TO THE STREET AND THE TRANSMISSION WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AS MY CAR STOPPED ACCELERATING AS I PARKED. THE CAR HAD BEEN SERVICED BY THE DEALER 2 DAYS PRIOR INCLUDING A SERVICE AND TRANSMISSION FLUID FLUSH. THE VEHICLE HAD 45,000 MILES ON IT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION (UNDER OUR EXTENDED WARRANTY) AND SAID THE COOLANT HAD LEAKED INTO THE TRANSMISSION. *TR

2004 XC90T6 HAS FAILED TRANSMISSION AT 82,500 MILES. I FIRST NOTICED PROBLEM WHEN FIRST STARTING FROM STOP. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND THEN IT FELT LIKE I HAD BEEN REAR ENDED. PROBLEM PERSISTED AND NOW PROBLEM OCCURS AT FIRST ACCELERATION AND AT FURTHER ATTEMPTS TO INCREASE SPEED THE TRANSMISSION FALLS OUT OF GEAR AND CATCH. THE FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION POSES A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY RISK AND APPEARS TO BE A WIDE SPREAD PROBLEM PARTICULARLY WITH THE 2004 XC90 T6. THE LAST TIME IT FAILED I WAS STUCK IN THE MIDDLE OF AN INTERSECTION AND WAS ALMOST STRUCK BROAD SIDE BY AN APPROACHING VEHICLE. THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP ADVISES ME THAT THE ORIGINAL TRANSMISSION IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE T6 ENGINE. REPORTED FAILURES HAVE OCCURRED AS EARLY AS 1,500 MILES AND VOLVO'S CORRECTIVE MEASURES OF REPLACING THE TRANSMISSIONS WITH REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSIONS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CORRECTING THE PROBLEM AS THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF REPEAT FAILURES. VOLVO HAS AGREED TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSIONS WITH A REMANUFACTURED TRANSMISSION BUT HAS REFUSED TO PAY FOR LABOR. THE DEALER HAS AGREED TO PAY FOR HALF OF THE LABOR. I HAVE REQUESTED THE DEALER TO RETAIN THE TRANSMISSION AND THE ASSOCIATED PARTS. I HAVE ALSO ASKED VOLVO IF THEY HAVE NOTIFIED NHTSA OF THE WIDESPREAD FAILURES AND THEY HAVE REFUSED TO PROVIDE ME WITH THIS INFORMATION. THE DRAIN LINES FROM THE SUNROOF HAD TO BE REPLACED. IN MARCH OF 2008 I NOTICED A STRONG ODOR OF GASOLINE IN THE GARAGE WERE THE VEHICLE WAS STORED. THIS ODOR HAD ALSO PERMEATED THROUGH OUT THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. CHECKED VEHICLE FOR FUEL LEAKS AND COULD NOT DETERMINE SOURCE DUE TO QUICK EVAPORATION OF FUEL. ON MARCH 17, 08 LOCAL DEALER FOUND LEAK AT TOP OF FUEL TANK UNDER 2ND ROW SEATS. REPLACED FUEL PUMP AND "FAULTY" LEVEL SENSOR. ON MARCH 27, 08 I RETURNED VEHICLE TO DEALER WITH SAME PROBLEM. THEY TRIED TO PACIFY ME BY SAYING IT WAS RESIDUAL ODOR AND WOULD GO AWAY WITH TIME. AFTER INSPECTION BY DEALER, IT WAS STILL LEAKING. SOLUTION PER DOCUMENTATION WAS TO REPLACE LEVEL SENSOR O-RING ON LEFT SIDE. HOWEVER THE TECH INFORMED ME THE FUEL TANK WITH PUMP AND SENDING UNIT WERE ALL REPLACED. ON SEPTEMBER 16, 08 I AM HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM AGAIN. IT IS BACK TO DEALER, STAY TUNED...... *TR
APPROXIMATELY 10 MONTHS AGO MY 2004 VOLVO XC-90 AWD HAD A COMPLETE FAILURE OF MY RIGHT REAR WHEEL BEARING AT 68,000 MILES. THE DEALER RECOMMENDED REPAIRING BOTH WHEEL BEARINGS SINCE "IT IS A COMMON FAILURE ON VOLVO VEHICLES" WITH THAT IN MIND, I HAD THEM BOTH REPLACED AT A SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL COST TO ME. NOW, I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE ANGLE GEAR (WHICH DRIVES AWD AND IS DIRECTLY TIED TO THE REAR WHEELS) HAS "BURNT OUT" AND IS (ACCORDING TO MY SERVICE ADVISOR) "TIED TO THE PREVIOUS WHEEL BEARING ISSUE" I HAD JUST 19, 000 MILES AGO. THE COST FOR THIS REPAIR IS $2900 ($1875 JUST FOR THE PART) ALL AT ANOTHER HUGE COST TO ME. ALL IN ALL, I'VE SPENT OVER $4100 DOLLARS ON THE REAR WHEEL/ANGLE GEARS - NOTHING YOU SHOULD EVER HAVE TO DO BEFORE THE VEHICLE IS EVEN 4 YEARS OLD! UPON DOING RESEARCH AND TALKING TO OTHER VOLVO OWNERS, IT IS VERY WELL DOCUMENTED THAT THERE IS A DEFECT IN VOLVO'S DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF THEIR WHEEL BEARINGS AND AWD SYSTEM, YET NO ONE IS DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT. VOLVO JUST PROVIDES LIP SERVICE AND DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO ADMIT THERE IS A PROBLEM , REGARDLESS OF THE REPETITIVE COMPLAINTS THEY HAVE RECEIVED ON THESE VERY CONCERNS. I HAVE RIGOROUSLY MAINTAINED THIS VEHICLE ACCORDING TO VOLVO'S RECOMMENDATIONS AND KNOW THESE ISSUES AREN'T CAUSED BY ANY NEGLECT ON MY BEHALF. VOLVO IS PLAYING WITH PEOPLES LIVES AND MONEY BY NOT TAKING PRESCRIPTIVE STEPS TO CORRECT THESE ISSUES - ALL AT A TREMENDOUS FINANCIAL COST TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL BEFORE ANY SERIOUS INJURIES OR DEATHS OCCUR FROM FAILURE OF THESE CRITICAL VEHICLE PARTS, IF NOT, IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS. *TR
