THE PLASTIC HEADLIGHT LENSES OF MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 HAVE BECOME CLOUDY AND APPEAR TO PREMATURELY AGING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND BOTH THE DEALER -- DON BEYER VOLVO IN FALLS CHURCH, VA -- AND VOLVO REFUSE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROBLEM OR REPAIR IT UNDER THE VEHICLE'S WARRANTY. OTHERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AS WELL: HTTP://WWW.VOLVO-FORUMS.COM/T4575-XC-90-HEADLIGHT-LENS-CRAZING.HTM AND HTTP://WWW.VOLVOFORUMS.COM/M_62330/TM.HTM THE DEALERSHIP IS CALLING IT "WIND DAMAGE," WHICH MAKES NO SENSE. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DRIVEN IN EXTREME WEATHER AND IS ALMOST EXCLUSIVELY DRIVEN IN THE METROPOLITAN DC AREA. EVEN IF IT IS WIND DAMAGE, THEN THE COMPONENT IS DEFECTIVE AS IT IS UNABLE TO WITHSTAND THE MODERATE WINDS OF THE MID-ATLANTIC REGION. *TR
TRANSMISSION FAILURE AT 55,000 MILES. *TR
REAR HUB (BEARINGS) ON PASSENGER SIDE FAILED. THIS IS THE THIRD TIME A REAR HUB FAILED. THE FIRST TIME IN 2005 THE VEHICLE HAD 28,000 MILES. THIS TIME THE REAR WHEEL WAS HELD ON BY THE BRAKE CALIPER ACCORDING TO THE VOLVO DEALER THAT REBUILT IT. THE SECOND WAS THE DRIVER SIDE REAR HUB FAILED IN 2007 WITH 72,000 MILES. THE THIRD WAS THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR HUB THAT FAILED ABOUT A WEEK AGO. THE VEHICLE MILEAGE WAS 84,000. THIS VEHICLE IS MAINTAINED ACCORDING TO THE MANUFACTURER'S SCHEDULE. IT IS QUITE DANGEROUS (REFER TO THE FIRST INCIDENT). THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL WOULD SEEM TO BE THE CORRECT OUTCOME. THOUGH THERE IS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AFTER THE 50,000 MILE PERIOD THERE HAS BEEN A COST TO US. *TR
COMING HOME TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FROM A TRIP IN ARIZONA AND DRIVING AT NIGHT THOUGH THE NEVADA DESERT. WEATHER WAS NICE, DRY CONDITIONS, LIGHT TRAFFIC ( THE SUN HAD SET ABOUT 7:00 IN THE EVENING) - JANUARY 2008 AND WE WERE CRUISING AT ABOUT 65 MPH. AT ABOUT 50 MILES OUTSIDE BANNING THE CAR HAD A POWER SURGE, AND IT FELT AS IF WE WENT OVER A BUMP ON THE ROAD, THERE WAS A QUICK FLICKER IN ALL LIGHTS AND THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM RESET. THE RECOVERY WAS ALMOST IMMEDIATE AND DID NOT THINK MUCH OF IT. ABOUT HALF HOUR LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME STARTED TO WORRY ABOUT THE CAR AS IT WAS DARK, HAD SMALL KIDS IN THE CAR AND WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, DESERT FOR MILES AND MILES. SO, WITH NO OPTIONS WE KEPT DRIVING. ABOUT TEN MINUTES LATER IT HAPPENED AGAIN. THIS TIME THERE WAS NO RECOVERY. ALL LIGHTS, INSTRUMENT PANEL, HEADLIGHTS, EMERGENCY LIGHTS, REAR LIGHT ALL OUT. THE CAR WAS PITCH BLACK. I BELIEVE ONLY THE FOG LIGHTS WERE WORKING BUT WAS WORRIED ABOUT VISIBILITY ON THE ROAD AS WE HAD NO REAR LIGHTS WHAT SO EVER AND THE MAJORITY OF THE TRAFFIC AT NIGHT ON THE I-10 IS TRUCKS. DROVE ON SHOULDER FOR ABOUT 2 MILES AND TOOK THE NEXT EXIT. SMALL GAS STATION ONLY, NO REPAIR SHOP, NO MOTEL NOTHING; ONLY A TRUCK STOP. AFTER A SMALL RESPITE WE STATED UP THE CAR AGAIN AND ENGINE AND ALL LIGHTS WERE AGAIN FUNCTIONAL. I WAS TERRIFIED OF DRIVING THE CAR HOME STILL OVER 100 MILES AWAY AND NO WHERE NEAR CIVILIZATION, BUT SINCE WE HAD NO OTHER CHOICE WE DID. NO FURTHER INCIDENTS UPON GETTING HOME. DEALER HAD NO IDEA WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THAT, THEY UPDATE COMPUTER CODES, AND A CONTROL MODULE. TO THIS DATE THEY STILL DO NOT KNOW WHAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THAT. WE ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE NOT GOTTEN INTO AN ACCIDENT OR WORSE. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN RAINY CONDITIONS, THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SHUT DOWN FOR A FEW SECONDS. THE LIGHTS, RADIO, WINDSHIELD WIPERS, AND STEERING ALSO SHUT OFF. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR INTERMITTENTLY WITHIN MINUTES UNTIL THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. HE ONLY NOTICED THE FAILURE WHILE HE WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY. THE DEALER MADE SEVERAL ATTEMPTS TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND WAS UNABLE TO FIND THE CAUSE. IT WAS SUGGESTED THAT HE REPLACE THE COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE SYSTEM. HE REPLACED THE SOFTWARE (UPGRADE) BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT INFORMED OF THE FAILURE. TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON OUR 2004 VOLVO XC-90 T6 AWD AT APPROXIMATELY 56,000K MILES. FORTUNATELY IT WAS A WARRANTY REPAIR; HOWEVER MY RESEARCH ON AUTOMOTIVE DISCUSSION BOARDS LIKE EDUMDS INDICATES A VERY LARGE PATTERN OF FAILURE OF THE TRANSMISSION ON THIS MODEL. *TR
WE PURCHASED OUR XC90 2005 FROM GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT ON DEC 24, 2006. IT IS NOW OCT 11, 2007. SINCE WE'VE HAD THE CAR WE'VE PUT AROUND 8,000 MILES ON IT. IT IS NOT OUR PRIMARY VEHICLE AND SITS PARKED IN OUR GARAGE MOST OF THE TIME. ON 10/10/07, UPON LEAVING WORK AND GETTING INTO MY SUV I SAW A RATHER LARGE PUDDLE OF WATER ON THE FLOOR OF THE DRIVER?S SIDE OF MY XC90. THE CAR OBVIOUSLY HAD BEEN PARKED OUTSIDE AND IT WAS RAINING THAT DAY. SINCE WE WERE BRINGING THE CAR INTO STAMFORD VOLVO ON 10/11/07 TO REPLACE THE FRONT HEADLIGHTS - THE SEAL ON BOTH HEADLIGHT WERE CRACKED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (THESE PARTS WERE UNDER WARRANTY AND I FIGURED IT WAS BEST TO DO THAT), I ALSO REQUESTED STAMFORD CT VOLVO TO LOOK AT THE WATER PROBLEM AS WELL. ON 10/11/07, STAMFORD CT VOLVO INFORMED ME AND MY HUSBAND THAT THE SUNROOF DRAINS WERE CLOGGED AND HAVE BEEN FOR SOMETIME. WE WERE LED TO BELIEVE THAT THE PROBLEM WAS IN FACT A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION. IN FACT HE ELABORATED TO SAY THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS CAR. IT IS PROBABLY THE REASON WHY THE CAR HAS ALWAYS HAD A MUSTY ODOR TO IT. IN FACT, WE NOTICED THIS ODOR AT TIME OF PURCHASE FROM GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT AND THE SALES MAN (MATTHEW MARTIN AT GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT) HAD ALSO NOTICED THE ODOR AS WELL AND AT OUR REQUEST WAS GOING TO LOOKING INTO IT MORE. ON 10/11/07, I CALLED PAUL SMITH THE GENERAL MANAGER AND SUPPOSED OWNER OF GENGRAS VOLVO IN MERIDEN, CT TO NOTIFY HIM OF THE DRAIN PROBLEM AND DAMAGE TO THE INTERIOR AND TO LET HIM KNOW THAT THIS PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE BEEN DEALT WITH AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE SINCE IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS CAR AND THERE WAS AN MUSTY ODOR HIS SALESMAN HAD ACKNOWLEDGED. HE IMMEDIATELY SAID IT WAS MY FAULT THAT THE DRAIN WAS CLOGGED AND HE WAS ABSOLUTELY NOT GOING TO PAY THE $150.00 TO UNCLOG THE DRAIN AND THE $800.00 TO REPAIR MY INTERIOR DAMAGE. *TR
I HAVE NOW EXPERIENCED THE FAILURE OF THE SECOND REAR WHEEL BEARING ON MY 2004 VOLVO XC-90 AWD, WITH THE SECOND FAILURE RESULTING IN THE PARTIAL SEPARATION OF THE WHEEL FROM THE VEHICLE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THERE IS A DEFECT IN THE DESIGN OF THE WHEEL BEARING, AND THESE BEARINGS SHOULD BE REPLACED IN THE FIELD BEFORE THER IS A FATALITY OR SERIOUS INJURY. ALTHOUGH VOLVO HAS REPLACED BOTH BEARINGS UNDER WARRANTY, A BRIEF INTERNET SEARCH INDICATES THIS IS A VERY COMMON FAILURE ON THIS MODEL. DAMAGE ON THE SECOND FAILURE RESULTED IN $1800 DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE. *JB
GRINDING NOISE IN DRIVE TRAIN RF WHEEL BEARING SEIZED , REPLACED FOR 257.50 LABOR CHARGE. VEHICLE IS MAKING NOISE AGAIN NOW. *TR
ON JUNE 15, 2007, WHILE ON A HIGHWAY TRAVELING 65 MPH, MY 2004 VOLVO XC90 MADE A JERK, AS IF IT HAD SUDDENLY FALLEN OUT OF GEAR. ABOUT 5 MINUTES LATER, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. IT FELT AS IF SOMETHING LOCKED THE TIRES FOR AN INSTANT, THEN LET GO. ABOUT ANOTHER 5 MINUTES LATER, WE RECEIVED AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAID "BRAKE FAILURE, STOP SAFELY". MOMENTS LATER, WE LOST ALL CONTROL OF THE CAR - TOTAL ELECTRONIC SHUTDOWN. NO LIGHTS, NO HAZARDS, NO POWER STEERING, NO BRAKES. MY HUSBAND WAS ABLE TO GLIDE TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE, AND WE ROLLED UNTIL THE CAR STOPPED. WE HAD OUR TWO YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE CAR, ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, IN THE DARK. IT WAS A TERRIFYING PREDICAMENT, AND WE COULDN'T LEAVE THE CAR DUE TO THE DANGER OF NOT BEING SEEN. WE HAD THE CAR TOWED, AND A FEW DAYS LATER, THE VOLVO DEALER SAID IT WAS A $60 SOFTWARE UPGRADE THAT NEEDED TO BE DONE. AFTER THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO US, WE TOOK IT TO ANOTHER VOLVO DEALER AND HAD THEM PERFORM A 45K CHECK-UP, HAD THEM REEVALUATE THE SITUATION, AND ALSO HAD A VA STATE INSPECTION DONE, AND THEY TOLD US EVERYTHING WAS FINE. JUST BARELY 3 MONTHS LATER, IN EXACTLY THE SAME SCENARIO, THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED. ON 9/21/07, WE WERE ON A HIGHWAY AT NIGHT, AND ONCE AGAIN FELT THE CAR JERKING, FOLLOWED A FEW MINUTES LATER BY TOTAL ELECTRONIC FAILURE. NO LIGHTS, NO HAZARDS, NOTHING. ONCE AGAIN, WE MANAGED TO GET OFF THE HIGHWAY SAFELY, BUT I FEAR THE NEXT TIME THIS HAPPENS, WE MAY NOT GET SO LUCKY. ALL 3 DEALERS THAT HAVE LOOKED AT THIS CAR HAVE NEVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM BEFORE, WHICH IS VERY UNSETTLING, AS I CAN NEVER BE CONVINCED IT IS FIXED. I AM TERRIFIED TO EVER DRIVE MY CAR AGAIN, EVEN IF THEY DO "FIX IT". THE CAR IS CURRENTLY STILL BEING EVALUATED, SO WE DO NOT KNOW THE LATEST PROGNOSIS FOR IT. *TR
WHILE THE CAR WAS PARKED IN THE GARAGE THERE WAS AN OVERWHELMING SMELL OF GASOLINE. I TOOK THE CAR TO MY MECHANIC. THEY OBSERVED A FUEL LEAK COMING FROM FUEL PUMP HOUSING. A NEW FUEL PUMP WAS INSTALLED. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 XC90. I HAVE BEEN HAVING ELECTRICAL FAILURE PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR WHERE THE CAR JUST STALLS WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 50MPH RANDOMLY FOR THE PAST THREE YEARS AND HAVE BROUGHT THE CAR INTO THE CALABASAS DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES AND ALSO TO AN INDEPENDENT AUTO MECHANIC AND NO ONE IS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE STALL OF THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM AND THEREFORE NOONE IS ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE SOLUTION TO THE HAZARD THAT OCCURS WHEN THE CAR STALLS AND THEREFORE NO ONE IS ABLE TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE DEALER ASSURES ME THAT IT IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, JUST A NUISANCE. I RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT THERE ARE 100S OF COMPLAINTS OF SIMILAR ISSUES FOR THIS CAR. TODAY THIS SAME ISSUE HAPPENED AT MUCH LOWER SPEEDS TWO TIMES WITHIN FIVE MINUTES. I REQUEST THAT THIS ISSUE BE RESEARCHED AND THE MANUFACTURER FIX THE PROBLEM. *TR
TRANSMISSION FAILURE TWICE AND FUEL PUMP REPLACED AND STILL LEAKING IN OUR VOLVO XC90 2004 T6 TRUCK. VOLVO REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION TWICE, BUT WE STILL HAD REPAIR COSTS BOTH TIMES. FUEL PUMP REPLACED AND STILL LEAKING CAUSING LARGE AMOUNTS OF GAS FUMES IN VEHICLE. TAKING INTO VOLVO TO FIX FUEL PUMP AGAIN TODAY THAT IS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL BUT JUST GOT IT BACK FROM 2ND TRANSMISSION REPAIR WHERE I HAD TO PAY FOR THE INTERNAL ENGINE LEAKS THAT COULD NOT BE DETECTED THAT IN TURN CONTAMINATED THE 2ND TRANSMISSION. I DO NOT BELIEVE I SHOULD HAVE PAID $1600 IN REPAIRS WHEN IT HAS BEEN SERVICED AND CANNOT DETECT THESE INTERNAL OIL LEAKS FROM THE ENGINE. THIS MAKE AND MODEL YEAR HAS BEEN COSTLY AND DANGEROUS. TRUCK HAS STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF LEFT TURN, ALMOST RESULTING IN HEAD ON COLLISION. THIS TRUCK SEEMS TO FALL UNDER LEMON LAW. WE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS TRUCK SINCE 2007.IT HAS HAD 2 TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENTS AND NOW 2 FUEL PUMPS,BOTH VOLVO PUMPS. I SHOULD INCUR ZERO COSTS OTHER THAN OIL CHANGES AND GENERAL MAINTENANCE. THESE ARE MAJOR EQUIPMENT FAILURES IN THIS VOLVO XC90 T6 2004 AND THE ENTIRE VEHICLE SHOULD BE RECALLED. I WILL BE SUBMITTING MY REPAIR COSTS TO VOLVO NORTH AMERICA. NOV. 23, 2004 - PURCHASED A VOLVO XC90 T6 FROM LEHMAN VOLVO IN YORK, PA - THE VEHICLE HAD 10.042 MILES ON IT AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE JUNE 26, 2007 - AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED - VOLVO OF CARY IN NC PAID FOR THE TRANSMISSION AND WE PAID FOR THE LABOR - $1425 - MILEAGE 68,306 FEB. 2008 - THE TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED LIGHTS/MESSAGE CAME ON PERIODICALLY WHILE WE WERE TRAVELING IN THE NE- WE CALLED VOLVO OF CARY AND THEY SAID THAT IF WE CONTINUED TO SEE THE LIGHT TO BRING IT TO A DEALER WHERE WE WERE MARCH 2008-JULY 2009 - A VARIETY OF MESSAGES WOULD APPEAR PERIODICALLY SAYING THAT TRANSMISSION SERVICE WAS REQUIRED OR URGENT JULY 7, 2009 - I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO VOLVO OF CARY WHILE THE LIGHT WAS ON STATING THAT TRANSMISSION SERVICE WAS NEEDED AS THEY INSTALLED AN UPDATED VERSION OF TRANSMISSION SOFTWARE - $123.38 MID-JULY 2009 - THE TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SLIP NOTICEABLY JULY 22, 2009 - COTTMAN TRANSMISSION REBUILT THE EXISTING TRANSMISSION - $3643.04 - MILEAGE 116,030. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO XC90. THE CONTACT HEARD A NOISE WHILE DRIVING 25-30 MPH. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS. THE REAR BEARING AXLE WAS REPLACED. THE TUMBLER IGNITION LOCK FAILED AND THE KEY COULD NOT BE REMOVED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED AND THE IGNITION LOCK WAS REPLACED. THE VIN, PURCHASE DATE, AND ENGINE SIZE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 74,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000. UPDATED 02-01-08 *BF UPDATED 02/01/08 *TR
I HAVE MY 2004 XC90 T6. AT ABOUT 34K MILES A NOTICEABLE 'THRUM' BEGAN SOMEWHERE IN THE DRIVETRAIN. ORIGINAL DIAGNOSIS WAS WORN TIRES. AFTER REPLACING TIRES, THE NOISE HAS BECOME WORSE. NOW AT 35K MILES IS VERY LOUD. NEW DIAGNOSIS IS FAILING WHEEL BEARING. A BIT OF RESEARCH INDICATES I AM NOT THE ONLY XC90 OWNER WITH A WHEEL BEARING FAILURE. WHEEL BEARING FAILURES AT 35K MILES THIS SHOULD BE DECLARES A DEFECT AND RECALLED. PLEASE RESEARCH THIS PROBLEM. *TR
WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE BEEN REPLACED TWICE UNDER WARRANTY. THE PROBLEM HAS RECURRED. THIS PART NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN HE PULLED THE REAR SEAT CUSHION TO FLIP THE SEAT BACK UP, THE SEAT PULLED RIGHT OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A DEALER WHO DETERMINED THREE METAL CLIPS (SLIDES) ON THE SEAT WERE FRACTURED IN HALF AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. ADDITIONALLY, WHILE DRIVING 20 MPH, THERE WAS A THUMPING NOISE COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. IT WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP WHO DETERMINED THE RIGHT REAR WHEEL WAS FRACTURED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED. UPDATED 12/5/2006 - *NM

THERE APPEARS TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE XC90 VOLVO TRANSMISSION IN ALL YEARS. THE MESSAGE ERROR CODE GIVEN IS "TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED". THE DEALERS CLAIMS IT JUST HAS TO UPDATE THE CAR SOFTWARE TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, IF YOU CHECK THE INTERNET FOR PROBLEMS REPORTED ON THIS SAME ISSUE, YOU WILL FIND IT IS NOT JUST AN ISOLATED PROBLEM WHICH NEED TO BE INVESTIGATED. *TR
I HAVE A 2004 VOLVO XC90 WITH ROUGHLY 40,000 MILES. I JUST HAD THE REAR WHEEL BEARING REPLACED FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE FIRST TIME WAS AT ROUGHLY 10,000 MILES. I AM VERY CONCERNED THAT THEY HAVE FAILED TWICE. I UNDERSTAND THAT IF THE CONDITION OF THE BEARINGS IS BAD ENOUGH, THE WHEEL CAN FALL OFF. I FEEL VOLVO SHOULD EXTEND THE WARRANTY ON THIS BEYOND 4 YEARS OR 50,000 MILES. *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PLACED IN PARK WITH THE IGNITION TURNED ON, THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO TURN OFF THE IGNITION WHILE STANDING OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE AND THE VEHICLE ROLLED FORWARD AND CRASHED INTO THE GARAGE. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THERE WAS MODERATE DAMAGE TO THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AND THE GARAGE. THE POLICE WERE NOT ALERTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED.
2004 XC90 HAS HAD THREE COMPUTER/ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, PERHAPS RELATED. URGENT MESSAGE APPEARS ON PANEL, "SRS NEEDS ATTENTION - URGENT". MY 2004 XC90 AWD BEGAN EXPERIENCING ODD ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THIS SPRING AT ABOUT 45000 MILES. WHILE DRIVING AT CRUISING SPEED, THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING EXPERIENCE A HARD JERK FOLLOWED BY ACTIVATION OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS AND LOSS OF POWER TO THE RADIO. FIRST TIME, THE DEALER COULD NOT REPLICATE THE PROBLEM BUT DOWNLOADED ELECTRICAL SOFTWARE UPDATES. SAME THING SECOND TIME AND BACK TO DEALER, AGAIN COULD NOT REPLICATE, AND THEY DOWNLOADED TRANSMISSION UPDATES FOCUSING MORE ON THE JERKING ISSUE. I AM EXPERIENCING CONTINUING SAFETY PROBLEMS WITH MY VOLVO XC90. THIS VEHICLES ALL WHEEL DRIVE (AWD) SYSTEM IS MALFUNCTIONING WITHOUT WARNING AND AT RANDOM TIMES. THIS RESULTS IN UNPREDICTABLE AND ERRATIC VEHICLE HANDLING WHICH CREATES SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUES TO THE VEHICLES DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS. THIS HAS BEEN OCCURRING FOR AT LEAST ONE YEAR AND WAS CONFIRMED AND DOCUMENTED BY A VOLVO DEALER DURING THE SUMMER OF 2005. I MUST POINT OUT THIS SAFETY PROBLEM INVOLVES AN ACTIVE SYSTEM THAT CANNOT BE CONTROLLED, ADJUSTED OR DISABLED BY THE VEHICLES DRIVER. THIS SAFETY PROBLEM CAUSED AN ACCIDENT DURING THE WINTER OF 2005. AT THAT TIME, THE ALL WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM FAILED SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING ON A SNOW COVERED ROAD. THIS CAUSED SUDDEN AND UNCONTROLLED FRONT WHEEL SPIN WHICH LED TO A LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL AND WITH THE VEHICLE SLIDING OFF A ROAD. A TOW TRUCK WAS REQUIRED TO MOVE THE VEHICLE BACK ON THE ROAD. THE VOLVO DEALER THAT CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM HAS MADE SEVERAL FAILED ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR IT. THEY HAVE DOCUMENTED COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS WITHIN THE VEHICLES HIGH SPEED NETWORK AND RELOADED VEHICLE SOFTWARE. THEY HAVE ALSO REPLACED: 1) THE VEHICLES FRONT WHEEL SENSORS, 2) THE MFI MODULE USED FOR VEHICLE DIAGNOSTICS, 3) THE BCM MODULE USED BY THE AWD SYSTEM, AND 4) THE AWD AOC UNIT WITH CLUTCH AND TRANSMISSION. NONE OF THIS HAS RESOLVED THE SAFETY PROBLEMS I AM EXPERIENCING FROM THIS VEHICLE. THIS VOLVO DEALER HAS TOLD ME THE PROBLEM CANNOT BE REPAIRED BECAUSE: 1) THE VEHICLES DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM DOES NOT REPORT ANY DIAGNOSTIC CODES, 2) THEIR OWN TECHNICIANS CANNOT DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, AND 3) VOLVO TECHNICIANS CANNOT DETERMINE THE PROBLEM. I PARKED MY VEHICLE IN MY DRIVEWAY ON THE EVENING OF FRIDAY, AUGUST 12, 2005. I LEFT ON VACATION THE FOLLOWING MORNING LEAVING MY VEHICLE IN THE DRIVEWAY. I RETURNED FROM VACATION LATE ON THE EVENING OF AUGUST 21, 2005. THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHEN I WENT OUT TO LEAVE FOR WORK, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START. I CALLED AAA IN ORDER TO HAVE THE CAR JUMPED. IT WOULD NOT JUMP. I THEN CALLED THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOLD ME TO CALL THE VOLVO HOT LINE FOR A TOW. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE GENGRAS VOLVO DEALERSHIP IN EAST HARTFORD, CT ON THE MORNING OF AUGUST 22, 2005 AND IT REMAINS THERE AT THIS TIME. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT REPORTS THAT ALL OF THE COMPUTERS ARE MALFUNCTIONING. THEY REPORT THIS TO BE "AN ACT OF GOD" AS IN THE CAR WAS STRUCK BY LIGHTENING. I WAS ADVISED TO REPORT THIS TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY WHICH I DID. AN APPRAISER WAS DISPATCHED TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND THEN SPECIAL ENGINEERS FROM NORTH EASTERN TECHNICAL SERVICES. INC IN FALL RIVER, MA WENT TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP TO VIEW THE VEHICLE. THEY REMOVED TWO COMPUTER MODULES WITH PERMISSION OF THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND MICROSCOPICALLY EXAMINED THEM TO DETERMINE IF ANY CONNECTORS, CIRCUIT BOARD OR COMPONENT DAMAGE WAS PRESENT. NEITHER MODULE SHOWED ANY INDICATORS OF DAMAGE. AT THIS POINT THE CLAIM HAS BEEN DENIED BY MY INSURANCE COMPANY SAYING THAT THE PROBLEM IS A WARRANTY PROBLEM. VOLVO DISPUTES THIS SAYING IT IS "AN ACT OF GOD". THE VEHICLE IS LESS THAN TWO YEARS OLD AND HAS LESS THAN 24,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE SINCE AUGUST 12, 2005. I ONLY USE PREMIUM GASOLINE IN CAR. 3) RECEIVED ''ANTI-SKID SERVICE REQUIRED'' MESSAGE WITH YELLOW INDICATOR LIGHT REMAINING ON. THIS HAPPENED ON TUESDAY AND LATER DISAPPEARED AFTER DRIVING THE CAR AGAIN. 4) THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE GEARSHIFT INDICATOR. WHEN I CHANGE GEARS FROM PARK TO ANYTHING ELSE, THE DISPLAY PANEL IS EITHER BLANK OR IT SHOWS AN INCORRECT GEAR '' IT WILL SHOW NEUTRAL WHEN I AM IN DRIVE OR REVERSE. ALSO IN ALL CASES, THE GEARSHIFT ON THE FLOOR WILL NOT LIGHT UP SO IT DOESN''T SHOW AT ALL WHAT GEAR I AM IN. THIS HAPPENED ONCE LAST WEEK AND HAS BEEN HAPPENING ON AND OFF SINCE THEN. 5) I THINK BECAUSE OF NUMBER 4 ON MY LIST, THE CAR SEEMS TO HESITATE AND EVEN BUCK A LITTLE BIT UPON ACCELERATION. THESE SYMPTOMS RESULTED IN VOLVO HAVING TO REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION ON MY CAR. THE CAR WAS JUST REACHING ITS ONE YEAR MARK AND HAD LESS THAN 7,000 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THANKFULLY THE CAR IS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT I FIND IT COMPLETELY UNACCAPTABLE AND UNSAFE THAT SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD HAPPEN TO MY CAR. ALSO, THE DAY THE CAR WAS TO BE PICKED UP FOR SERVICE I RECEIVED TWO BRAKE FAILURE PULL OVER SAFELY MESSAGES. THIS ALSO HAD TO DO WITH THE TRANSMISSION NEEDING REPLACING. AGAIN, COMPLETELY UNACCAPTABLE.

I FOUND IT WAS FUSE 24 AND REPLACED IT. THIS FUSE BLEW 4 MORE TIMES OVER THE NEXT 3 DAYS - ONCE IT BLEW WHEN REPLACING IT. THE DEALERSHIP SAID THIS WAS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE AND SCHEDULED REPAIR FOR 2 WEEKS LATER. (THE ABS SYSTEM STILL REPORTED WARNINGS ON THE MESSAGE DISPLAY). ONCE THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY WORKED ON IT, THEY REPLACED THE CENTRAL ELECTRICAL BOX AND ORDERED A NEW TRANSMISSION WHICH STILL NEEDS TO BE INSTALLED. I STILL HAVE THE ABOVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS ALONG WITH THE OTHER PROBLEMS WHICH THE DEALERSHIP CLAIMS ARE ALL RELATED. THERE IS 10,000 MILES ON THIS CAR. PREVIOUSLY, I OWNED A 1999 XC. I CONTINUED TO HAVE ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS WITH THIS CAR UNTIL I STARTED IT AT A DAYCARE TO HAVE THE BATTERY EXPLODE. SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM WAS TO UPGRADE ME TO THE 2004 WITH THE ASSURANCE THE PROBLEMS I HAD ON THE 1999 WERE "HIGHLY UNUSUAL AND UNHEARD OF". THE ENGINE WAS STILL ON, BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT ACCELERATE WHEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS ENGAGED. THE SERVICE TRANSMISSION LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN INSPECTED WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 120,000.
MY CAR MAKES A THROBBING HUMMING NOISE CAUSING THE GAS PEDDLE TO VIBRATE WHILE ACCELERATING AT A SLOW SPEED. THE CAR WAS BROUGHT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REVIEW AND THEY SAID IT WAS NORMAL. I BROUGHT IT TO ANOTHER DEALERSHIP FOR A SECOND OPINION. THE SHOP FOREMAN REVIEWED IT AND CONCLUDED THAT IT WAS NOT A NORMAL FEATURE OF THE CAR. THEY HAD A FIELD TECHNICIAN FROM THE MANUFACTURE TO LOOK AT THE CAR AND THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT'S CAUSING THE NOISE. COINCIDENTLY, THEY HAD ANOTHER CAR OWNED BY VOLVO JUST LIKE MIND THAT MADE THE SAME NOISE AND VIBRATION. THEY CHANGED SEVERAL COMPONENTS IN THE DRIVE TRAIN FOR THAT VEHICLE BUT THE PROBLEM WAS STILL THERE. THE DEALERSHIP HAVE NO OTHER SPECULATIONS OR SUGGESTIONS OF WHAT TO DO NEXT. I FEEL UNSAFE WITH MY CAR SINCE VOLVO DOESN'T EVEN KNOW THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. I CONTACTED CUSTOMER CARE CENTER AT THE VERY BEGINNING AND THEY DID NOT HELP MUCH. I CONTACTED THE PRESIDENT & CEO OF VOLVO NORTH AMERICA A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. I HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THEM. *AK
THE VEHICLE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH SEVERE ROLLBACK ON A SLIGHT INCLINE OR A STEEP HILL. THE VEHICLE IS AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, BUT RESPONDS LIKE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE WHEN ON ANY TYPE OF INCLINE. THE DEALER AND THE MANUFACTURER CLAIMS THAT THE VEHICLE IS DESIGNED TO DO THAT. *LA
