Tire size LT245/75R16 While driving on highway at speeds between 55 and 65 mph, front driver's side tire started to vibrate. Cause of vibration was not known at the time. Within 50 miles of driving, the entire tread on the front left tire separated from the tire while traveling at 55 mph. The tire has less than 12,000 miles of wear on it at the time of failure, and the tires were bought new. Control of the vehicle was maintained during tread separation and fortunately the projectile tread did not hit other cars or people. Tire remnants are available for inspection.

THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 182,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 EQUIPPED WITH GENERAL AMERI 660 AS TIRES (NA), SIZE: P255/70R16 (NA). WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 MPH, THERE WAS A LOUD THUMP SOUND NEAR THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE AND THE CONTACT LOST CONTROL OF THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND OBSERVED THAT THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TREAD SEPARATED. THE TIRE WAS NOT REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 93,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000.

UPON INSPECTION OF THE TIRES, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT FOUR OUT OF THE SIX HAD CRACKS ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE SIDEWALL. HE IS IN THE PROCESS OF NOTIFYING THE MANUFACTURER. THREE TIRES HAVE BEEN DEFLATED WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED TO HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THE VALVE STEMS, HAVING CUTS IN THEM AT THE RIM. I WAS DRIVING INTO THE DRIVEWAY AT HOME AND NOTICED A NOISE BEHIND CHEVROLET 2000G HIGH TOP CONVERSION VAN. I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING INITIALLY FROM THE REAR VIEW MIRRORS. I LATER DISCOVERED THE SPARE TIRE WAS LYING IN THE STREET. THE STEEL CABLE THAT HELD IT UP AT THE BOTTOM OF THE VAN BROKE COMPLETELY. I WAS LUCKY IT HAPPENED IN OUR DRIVEWAY. IF WE WERE GOING DOWN AN INTERSTATE IT COULD CAUSE A SERIOUS ACCIDENT IF SOMEONE WERE FOLLOWING ME VERY CLOSE. I WONDER IF ANYONE ELSE HAVE REPORTED THIS INCIDENT. AFTER TRAVELING ABOUT 350 MILES ON I-95 & I-26 WE EXPERIENCED A BLOWOUT ON THE REAR TIRE. IT DID 1300.00 IN BODY DAMAGE TO OUR 2000 SILVERADO 1500 P/U'S REAR FENDER. AFTER REPLACING THE TIRE WITH THE SPARE WE CONTINUED TO OUR DESTINATION WHERE WE REPLACED ALL 4 TIRES WITH NEW ONES. THERE WAS STILL APPROX 8000 MILES LEFT ON THE WARRANTY, BUT WE PURCHASED A DIFFERENT BRAND. WE SAVED THE DEFECTIVE TIRE AND SENT IT TO THE MANUFACTURER WHO CLAIMED IT WAS ROAD HAZARD DAMAGE. WE DID NOT ENCOUNTER ANY ROAD HAZARD AND MAINTAINED THE CORRECT AIR PRESSURE AND TIRE ROTATION SCHEDULE. *NM
WE HAD PURCHASED UNIROYAL TIRES IN OCTOBER 2002 FROM FARM AND FLEET IN LA CROSSE. AS OF AUGUST 4, 2005, ALL THE TIRES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED DUE TO THE TIRES CRACKING AND PEELING. WE TOOK THE CAR TO SEARS WHERE THEY TOLD US THEY WOULD NOT LET US DRIVE THE CAR DUE THE SEVERITY OF THE PEELING OF THE TIRES. DRIVING OUR CAR WITH THE TIRES IN THE POOR CONDITION COULD CAUSE AND ACCIDENT AND INJURY. I STARTED HAVING A PANIC ATTACK AFTER HEARING THIS NEWS. WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT NORMAL FOR TIRES TO SHRED, CRACK, AND PEEL AT ONLY 40,000 MILES. I CALLED FARM AND FLEET WHERE WE BOUGHT THE TIRES AND HE TOLD ME "TOO BAD" AND HUNG UP ON ME. I CALLED UNIROYAL AND SHE SAID IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM IF OUR TIRES CRACKED, THAT'S WHAT TIRES DO. THESE TIRES THAT CRACKED, PEELED, AND SHREDDED HAVE A 75,000 MILES WARRANTY, NOONE WILL HONOR THIS WARRANTY AND WE HAD TO SPEND OVER $400 BUYING NEW TIRES. *NM
