I was driving down the road and I heard a clunk. I lost all power and coasted into a farmers field. The dash board said lost power, nothing else. I had no warning. Oil pressure was where it should be until is quit. Keller Chevrolet contacted us and told us the engine blew. The connecting rod broke and the piston come apart. I had service done on my truck 4 days prior. I always service my vehicle every 3,000 miles or 3 months which ever comes first. I have about 121,000 miles on my 2001 pickup. It has always been serviced at either Bob Schmidt Chevrolet or Keller Chevrolet. We are in the process of getting a new engine from GM and having it installed at Keller Chevrolet. While driving engine cuts off intermittently, usually will restart. This is caused by the Crank position sensor. Once replaced, the issue was resolved. This vehicle was NOT covered by NHTSA recall 07U521000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 8-4865333314. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 138,000.

THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR HAS FAILED THE VEHICLE RUNS ROUGH. THE ENGINE STALLS, MAY RE-START IMMEDIATELY OR AFTER A COOL DOWN PERIOD.
I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS VERY WELL MAINTAINED SILVERADO. AT JUST 100000 MILES I NOTICED MULTIPLE EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS BROKEN, I HAD NOTICED A TICKING SOUND FOR AT LEAST 10000 MILES BUT COULD NOT LOCATE THE SOUND, AS IT TURNS OUT IT WAS THE BROKEN EXHAUST BOLTS. THESE BOLTS BREAK OFF AT VARYING LENGTHS INCLUDING BELOW FLUSH WHICH IS EXTREMELY COSTLY TO HAVE REPLACED. AFTER A BRIEF INTERNET SEARCH I HAVE REALIZED THIS IS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH A MAJORITY OF THESE VEHICLES. THIS IS DEFINITELY AN EPA CONCERN BEING THE RAW GASSES ARE FLOWING OUT OF THE VEHICLE BYPASSING THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER AND BY NOT ALLOWING THESE VEHICLES TO PASS REGULATORY SMOG CERTIFICATIONS. THIS DEFECT COULD ALSO BE CONSIDERED A SAFETY CONCERN WITH THE POTENTIAL FOR THE EXHAUST GASSES TO GET INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. I TRULY HOPE THAT YOU CAN INVESTIGATE THESE DEFECTIVE BOLTS AND AT THE VERY LEAST GET CHEVROLET TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE AND HELP WITH A PORTION OF THE COST TO REPAIR.

DRIVING DOWN I25 IN COLORADO TRUCK SIMPLY QUIT RUNNING WAS ABLE TO RESTART AFTER PULLING OVER TO SIDE OF HWY. HAS HAPPENED MULTIPLE TIMES SINCE, OFTEN TWICE A DAY, ONE OR TWO TIME GOING TO WORK AND THE SAME GOING HOME. VERY OFTEN THE TRUCK RESTARTS RIGHT AWAY, BUT SOMETIMES IT HAS TO SET FOR SEVERAL MINUTES BEFORE IT WILL RESTART. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AAMOCO AND UPON DIAGNOSIS, THE CONSUMER WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A CHEVROLET DEALER, BECAUSE A CODE DISPLAYED, WHICH DIRECTED THEM TO A SAFETY RECALL. THE RECALL WAS IN REFERENCE TO A CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR THAT COULD INTERMITTENTLY, OR FAIL COMPLETELY. THE CONSUMER WENT TO THE DEALER AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION. THE DEALER DID IN FACT AGREE THE PROBLEM WAS A DEFECTIVE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR, BUT CHEVROLET REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS, BECAUSE HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. *JB UPDATED 10/06/10.*JB
