The contact stated that while driving at 35 MPH, the wheels locked up, and the driver lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the tire center, which eventually took possession of the vehicle due to the contact's inability to pay the service fee. The contact walked to the residence. The contact called the FTC and was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.
The end of the tire stem broke off when I was refilling the tires. This prevented the tires from staying filled and I was nervous about driving the vehicle until I could get it to a shop to be repaired. We replaced all the stems, but replacing the sensors was too expensive. If this damage had occurred while driving, a sudden flat tire could have been very dangerous. Never thought to take pictures for a report until after we had already replaced the valves.
ON SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 2019 I WAS DRIVING ON U.S. 36 FROM DANVILLE, IN TO AVON, IN. NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF 550 E MY FRONT PASSENGER TIRE FLEW OFF MY CAR WHILE I WAS GOING 55 M.P.H. LUCKILY I WAS IN THE SLOW LANE AND WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND NO ONE WAS HURT. THE REASON I AM WRITING IS BECAUSE ALL 5 STUDS ARE MISSING FROM THE WHEEL HUB. THERE IS NO METAL REMAINING AND NO SIGNS OF SHEARING. I DONT KNOW IF THIS IS A RECALL OR IF NOT, MAYBE IT SHOULD BE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY EQUIPPED WITH BF GOODRICH ADVANTAGE TA RADIAL TIRES, SIZE: 225/65R16 (NA). WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH, THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE EXPERIENCED A BLOWOUT. THE ALUMINUM VALVE STEM DETACHED FROM THE TIRE AND THE LUG NUTS WERE SEVERELY CORRODED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REMAINING THREE TIRES WERE SUBJECT TO SEVERE CRACKING ON THE SIDEWALLS AND THERE WERE RUBBER FRAGMENTS FROM THE REAR DRIVER'S SIDE TIRE AT THE TIME OF THE BLOWOUT. A HIGHWAY HELPER WAS CONTACTED TO REPLACE THE TIRE WITH THE SPARE LOCATED UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. HASTINGS CHRYSLER CENTER (2980 HIGHWAY 61 SOUTH, HASTINGS, MINNESOTA 55033, (651) 437-5200) WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REPLACED THE TIRE VALVE SENSOR. IT WAS DETERMINED THAT SEVERE LUG NUT CORROSION WAS EVIDENT IN ALL OF THE TIRES. THE CONTACT STATED THAT ALL FOUR TIRES WERE OEM EQUIPMENT PURCHASED ON JANUARY 4, 2011. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES. THE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 30,000. THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 14,000.
LOW TIRE PRESSURE ALARM INITIATED AT INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SPEED, ROUGHLY 70MPH STRAIGHT LINE TRAVEL. PULLED OVER AND DISCOVERED THE METAL VALVE STEM HAD CRACKED JUST BELOW THE PLASTIC CAP AND HAD LEAKED ABOUT 6-8PSI OUT OF 36. CONTACT WITH THE TIP CAUSED IT TO CRACK OFF COMPLETELY CAUSING RAPID DEFLATION OF THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR TIRE. WOULD HAVE CAUSED SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE POSSIBLE ACCIDENT IF VEHICLE HAD STILL BEEN MOVING OR IF RESPONSE TO TIRE PRESSURE WARNING WAS DELAYED. HIGH HAZARD FAILURE. THIS IS THE SECOND VALVE STEM FAILURE FOR THIS VEHICLE, BUT THE FIRST WAS A CORROSION LEAK AROUND THE BASE WHICH WAS MUCH SLOWER.
VALVE STEM WAS CRACKED, AND TIRE WAS SLOWLY LOSING INFLATION. THOUGHT IT WAS A NAIL AND DROVE IT FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE MY APPT. TO GET IT LOOKED AT. WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS A MAJOR MANUFACTURING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. LUCKY I WAS NOT ON THE ROAD WHEN IT TOTALLY BROKE AND DEFLATED THE TIRE ON THE SPOT. FIXED THE ONE AND WAS TOLD I SHOULD REPLACE THEM ALL. VERY COSTLY REPAIR. NOW MY WARNING WILL NOT GO AWAY AND WAS TOLD THIS TOO IS A PROBLEM. SO I WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE WARNING EVEN THOUGH IT IS ALL WORKING OKAY.

THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ALUMINUM VALVE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR ILLUMINATED, THE CONTACT HEARD AN ABNORMAL NOISE AND THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE ALUMINUM STEM VALVE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE VALVES FAILED AND WERE REPLACED. THE FAILURE RECURRED THREE TIMES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURES AND PROVIDED NO SOLUTION. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 80,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT TIRE REPAIR SHOP WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STEMS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND WAS TO RESPOND BACK TO THE CONTACT WITH THEIR RECOMMENDATION OR SOLUTION. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 77,000.
ON TWO SEPARATE DATES THIS SUMMER WHILE TRAVELING AT SPEEDS BETWEEN 50 & 60 MPH I HAD TIRE PRESSURE SENSORS BRAKE CAUSING THE TIRES TO GO FLAT. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO BRING THE CAR TO A SAFE STOP BUT IN BOTH CASES I HAD TO PURCHASE NEW TIRES BECAUSE THE TIRES WHICH WERE RELATIVELY NEW COULD NO LONGER BE USED. I AM MOST CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY ISSUE AS I WAS TOLD BY THE TIRE DEALER THAT TPS FAILURE IS QUITE COMMON. NOT ONLY COULD THE TIRE GOING FLAT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT BUT ON ONE OF THE FAILURES I WAS PUT IN A VERY DANGEROUS POSITION TO CHANGE THE TIRE.
THIS IS THE 2ND TIME I HAVE HAD A TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR BEAK INSIDE TIRE CAUSING THE TIRE TO GO FLAT AS WELL AS HAVING A FIRE ON THE INSIDE DUE TO THE FRICTION. (LAST TIME WAS IN 2014). I DID KEEP THE TIRE WITH BURN SPOTS AS WELL AS THE TIRE SENSOR FROM FIRESTONE. I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS ON AN OFF RAMP WHEN THIS HAPPENS ONE NOT GOING 70 MPH ON THE THRU WAY (I75). LAST TIME MY DEALER (CHRYSLER JEEP DODGE IN BRANDON FL) DID REPLACE A SENSOR AS WELL AS THE TIRE. (OCTOBER, 2014 / A WEEK AFTER PURCHASING THIS CAR). MANY MECHANICS STATE THEY NEVER SEEN THIS PROBLEM; HOWEVER, I HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS TWICE.
I HAVE HAD 2 FLAT TIRES FROM THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR, DUE TO CRACKED AND SPLIT COLLARS THAT HAVE DETERIORATED. THE COLLAR WAS MISSING AND CHRYSLER DENIED ANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE REPLACED ALL 4 SENSORS AND HAVE RETAINED 3 OF THEM.. THE COLLARS COULD NOT BE SAVED AS THEY DETERIORATED UPON REMOVAL. THE REMAINING TWO WERE REPLACED TODAY AS THE COLLARS WERE SPLITTING AND SOON WOULD BREAK OFF AND POSSIBLE CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE TWO FLATS OCCURRED IN MY DRIVEWAY, AND I DROVE TO HAVE THE LAST TWO REPLACED.

THE VEHICLE WAS BEING DRIVEN AT A SLOW SPEED (LESS THAN 20 MPH IN A 35 MPH ZONE) THROUGH A NORMAL WATER PUDDLE (APPROXIMATELY 10 FEET LONG AND 4-6 INCHES DEEP) AND THE SPARE TIRE WHICH IS STORED UNDER THE VEHICLE CAME OFF AND WAS DRAGGING UNDER THE VEHICLE. THIS WAS A CITY STREET WITH NORMAL CURB AND GUTTER FOR RUN OFF. OTHER CARS WERE SLOWING DOWN AND DRIVING THROUGH THE PUDDLE WITHOUT INCIDENT. REPAIR COSTS ARE ESTIMATED AT $400+. THIS WAS REPORTED TO CHRYSLER AS WELL.

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2010 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 50 TO 55 MPH, A WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND A TIRE FLATTENED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE VALVE STEM DISINTEGRATED AND THE SENSOR FELL INSIDE OF THE TIRE. THE VALVE STEM WAS REPLACED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 110,000.
I HAVE A 2010 CHRYSLER TOWN & COUNTRY WHICH IS IN THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT TAYLOR CHRYSLER DEALER. MY VAN WAS MAKING A VERY LOUD ROARING NOISE. I WAS TOLD TO BRING THE VAN TO THE DEALER BECAUSE THE WHEEL BEARINGS ARE UNDER EXTENDED WARRANTY DUE TO A DEFECT. WHEN THE MECHANIC CALLED HE PROCEEDED TO TELL ME T THAT THE FRONT BEARINGS ARE BAD WHICH WOULD BE COVERED. HE ALSO STATED THAT THE RIGHT REAR BEARING WAS BAD AS WELL BUT WOULD NOT BE COVERED. HE ALSO STATED THAT THERE IS NO WAY THAT WHEEL BEARINGS AT THIS MILEAGE SHOULD GO BAD THIS IS NOT A NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR PART OF A VEHICLE. I WOULD HOPE THAT YOU CAN DO AN INVESTIGATION TO SHOW HOW BAD THE REAR BEARING ARE AS WELL. THIS IS OBVIOUSLY A DEFECT AS WELL BUT, I AM GOING TO BE OUT $500.00 TO MAKE THE REPAIR. I HAVE DONE SOME RESEARCH AND I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT IS/HAS DEALT WITH THIS PROBLEM. *TR
ALL OF THE METAL VALVE STEMS ARE CORRODED AND CRACKED, AND ONE OF OUR TIRES IS SLOWLY LEAKING AIR AS A RESULT. WE'VE BEEN TOLD THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE THE VALVE STEM CAN CONTINUE TO CRACK AND EVENTUALLY BREAK, CAUSING RAPID TIRE PRESSURE DEFLATION. THE RESULT CAN BE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE WHEN THE TIRE BLOWS OUT AND POSSIBLE CATASTROPHIC RESULTS. I HAVE NOTICED SEVERAL OTHER CHRYSLER AND DODGE MINIVANS IN MY AREA WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I LIVE IN SYRACUSE, NY AND TO COMBAT 115 INCHES OF SNOW EACH YEAR, THEY USE ROAD SALT. THE METAL VALVE STEMS USED BY CHRYSLER DO NOT RESIST CORROSION. I REPLACED ONE AT THE DEALER AND COST ABOUT $250 BETWEEN THE PART AND REPROGRAMMING THE TPS. THIS IS A POTENTIAL DEADLY ISSUE AND CHRYSLER SHOULD BE FORCED TO RECALL THE FAULTY VALVE STEMS THAT CORRODE AND CRACK. *TR
2010 CHRYSLER TOWN AND COUNTRY. AT 75,000 MILES RIGHT REAR TIRE MONITOR ALARMED AND WITHIN 5 MINUTES ALL AIR HAD LEAKED OUT. ACCIDENT ALMOST OCCURRED BUT WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF ROAD. REMOVED TIRE AND TOOK TO REPAIR SHOP. THEY SHOWED ME THE FAULT WAS A CORRODED TPMS DEVICE. THEY REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH NON TPMS STEM. VERY CONCERNED THE OTHER 3 WILL LET GO IN SIMILAR FASHION. WAY TOO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS NOTED ON VARIOUS INTERNET SITES. REPLACEMENT COST IS ALSO VERY HIGH BUT IS FORCED ON PEOPLE IF THEY WANT TO BE SAFE. *TR
DRIVING ON HIGHWAY, LEFT REAR TIRE PRESSURE ALARMED AND WENT IMMEDIATELY FLAT, PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE, TOOK TO A SERVICE STATION WHO SAID THAT THE METAL/ALUMINUM COMPONENT TO THE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR VALVE STEM HAD CORRODED,WHEN THAT CAME OFF THE PRESSURE SENSOR WAS SUCKED INTO THE TIRE AND THAT WAS WHAT CAUSED THE IMPLOSION. THEY SAID THEY SEE THIS COMMONLY WITH THESE TIRE PRESSURE SENSOR GAUGES THAT CHRYSLER USES. I WILL NOW HAVE TO PAY TO REPLACE ALL 4. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALER TWICE NOW, EACH TIME I LEFT A MESSAGE BUT THEY SAID PARTS DEPARTMENT WAS NOT IN, AND WOULD HAVE TO CALL ME BACK. THIS COULD HAVE CAUSED A VERY SERIOUS CRASH AS THERE WAS VERY LITTLE TIME FOR US TO GET OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, BUT WE WERE LUCKILY IN THE RIGHT HAND LAND AND NOT GOING FULL SPEED. WE DID NOT REPORT TO POLICE AS THE STATE TROOPER ARRIVED ON SCENE. *TR
